Feliza and Or Zohar Friday, April 5 & Saturday, April 6 Feliza & Rabbi Or Zohar are composers and performers of sacred music. Rabbi Zohar has served the Atlanta Sister City region of Yochneam-Meggido as spiritual leader for the growing reform movement in Israel. Feliza and Rabbi Zohar tour internationally, sharing their music, teachings and life experiences. Feliza & Or have released two albums, Lev Tahor (2007) and Mikolot Mayim (2016), and a songbook of their original melodies, Feliza & Or Zohar Sacred Music (2018, Vol. 1). In the past 2 years they have visited more than 30 congregations in North America as musicians and scholars in residence. They featured their music at the 2017 URJ Biennial, and will feature their music in 2019 both at the CCAR and Hava Nashira conventions.

Jenny Korsen announces Retirement! ''Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth'' (Num 12:3) Of the many personality traits attributed to the Biblical hero Moses, he is most beloved for the a havah humility that he displayed over the course of his lifetime. As he led the Israelite people through the wilderness lo those 40 years, we are taught of how he protected the people, guided them with his good counsel, advocated on behalf of their causes and assisted every soul in securing their place within Kenesst Yisrael, the holy community of Israel. After serving the people for many years, at the tender age of 120 years, the time arrived for him to rest and to pass on the baton to the next one who would take his place. And the people cried, and the honored him for all that he had done for them.

Since January of 1996 Jenny Korsen has served as the bookkeeper of our Temple Beth Tikvah community. Caring for the varied souls that have sojourned over the years with this sacred congregation.

A few weeks ago Jenny shared with me and Temple president Rhonda Povlot her decision to retire. Although we knew this day would one day arrive, actually hearing those words, makes us all reflect on how much of what TBT is, is actually due to this quiet unassuming woman who has celebrated our joys, held our sorrows and quietly advocated for us through the tough times, always striving to make sure that TBT remained a safe haven against the storms that batter.

Already, beautiful messages are flooding in sharing many of the same sentiments “we are not sure what we’ll all do without her beautiful presence and calming voice on the other end of the telephone.”

Fortunately for us all, Jenny won’t be leaving TBT. She and her beloved spouse Dave will finally have the luxury of joining their children in the pews at Shabbat and holiday services, as well as celebrating all the future simchas awaiting their grandchildren as they thrive and grow here as a family at TBT. Out of gratitude for all the years of her service to Temple Beth Tikvah we invite the community to join us at 6:30 on Friday evening May 3 for our Ruach Shabbat service, and a very special TBT Oneg Shabbat in Jenny’s honor. Please come and share your good wishes for her happy retirement.

Again, we are most grateful for Jenny’s time with us as part of the TBT staff and we now look forward to many years ahead celebrating all of life’s blessings with Jenny, Dave and the entire Korsen family.

For more than 23 years, I have so enjoyed working and connecting with our Temple Beth Tikvah families, but it is time for me to move on to a new chapter in my life. I have recently shared with the Rabbi and Rhonda Povlot my decision to retire.

Officially, I will be leaving my position at the end of April, but I will be available to assist the new person in order to make the transition a smooth one.

My years at TBT have given me so many great memories to treasure, and it has been the wonderful clergy, my coworkers and the congregation that have made the years here so memorable. I cannot express jut how much I will miss everyone. Dave and I will remain members and stay a part of this special community.

CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING—SUSAN COSDEN “When Adar enters, joy increases.” - Babylonian Talmud, Ta’anit 29a On Thursday, March 7 and Friday, March 8 we celebrate Rosh Chodesh Adar 2, the month of Purim, in which joy increases.

For the entire month of Adar 2 we are invited or commanded, depending on your belief system, to be silly and joyous. It is a time when we are to have parties and tell jokes. It is a time when, not just on Purim but throughout the month, we do silly things and wear costumes. That is why Munchkin Shabbat on March 8 is Backwards Shabbat and religious school on March 10 is Pajama Day. Purim itself is a time when we do things the opposite of what we normally do - make noise in the sanctuary, be silly with prayers, dress up like other people, and for some, celebrate more than usual. Adar and Purim is the Jewish time to cut loose, similar to Mardi Gras and Halloween. Most religions offer a time in the year to officially do this because joy is important in our lives. Not only does religion bring an official time to rejoice but the new analysis from the Pew Research Center found that “regular participation in a religious community” was linked to greater happiness for people in the US and in many other countries.

Yes, a recent Pew study says that dues paying members of congregations who engage with their religious community at least once a month are happier than those who are inactive or unaffiliated. To be specific it says that “more than one-third of actively religious U.S. adults (36%) describe themselves as very happy compared with just a quarter of both inactive and unaffiliated Americans.” There were no examples where actively religious people were significantly less happy than inactive or unaffiliated people.

There may be many reasons for the impact of religion, in our case Judaism, on happiness. According to various happiness researchers, long term happiness can be achieved through four different steps: a sense of belonging; having meaning and purpose in your life; the stories we tell ourselves; and awe, wonder, and radical amazement. Judaism provides us with the tools for all of these.

Judaism and specifically being a member of Temple Beth Tikvah can provide us with a sense of belonging. As the old joke goes, “Saba, why do you go to services? Well, Irving goes to services to talk to God. I go to services to talk to Irving.” When we attend services regularly we make friends with those who are in attendance, supporting each other as we share names for the Mi Sheberach (healing) list and the Kaddish (mourners) list and celebrating with each other when we share “for these things I am grateful.” When we join an affinity group, the softball team, or an adult education class we have the opportunity to connect with people who have a similar interest or hobby.

Volunteering at TBT may be one of the ways you find meaning and purpose in your life. For some of you, the Jewish value of tikkun olam, repairing the world, may be your mission and purpose in life. For others of you, helping people make connections to one another in Sisterhood, Men’s Club, HOTTY, or our membership committee may bring meaning and purpose in your life. If teaching others adds meaning and purpose in your life, please reach out to me!

The stories we tell ourselves are how we frame our experiences. The month of Adar helps frame our view of the world and the story of Esther.

Saying the prayer Elohai Neshamah reminds us each morning that we are fortunate to have this day and that we start it with a clean soul and a clean sheet, that what we did in the past is behind us. Knowing the Jewish phrase, “this too shall pass” helps us get through harder moments in our lives and still recognize all the gifts we still have during those challenging moments.

Temple Beth Tikvah regularly celebrates awe, wonder, and radical amazement in the world. We are here to guide and support you in your journey of finding awe, wonder, and radical amazement and searching for meaningful ways to show that appreciation.

In the end, that is what Adar is all about, we celebrate and rejoice because life is a gift. We give mishloach manot, gifts to our family and friends, because community adds joy in our life.

We give metanot l’evyonim, gifts for those in need, because we are grateful for what we have and it adds meaning and purpose and therefore joy to the holiday to help others. We hear the Megillah of Esther being read because it helps us frame that experience.

In the spirit of adding meaning to the month and celebrating community, and to prepare for Adar 2, Sisterhood and Adult Education will be sponsoring our Rosh Chodesh Adar 2 Women’s Circle on Tuesday, March 5 at 7:30 pm.

May the month of Adar 2 bring you joy and happiness, meaning and community, wow and awe.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It’s Ok to Take off the Mask!

With the festival of Purim just around the corner, it reminds us of joy and fun as well as laughter and even a few drinks if we choose. It is also not ironic that I have been thinking more and more about “Masks”. We all wear them and not just at Purim. We change them so much and so habitually we don’t even notice. We have done it for so long. I seem to wear them more often when I want to avoid being vulnerable, or out of fear, or out of shame or when facing painful truths, but mostly out of fear.

Close your eyes and picture a world where no one cared what type car you drove, your job title, your clothing label, your GPA, your income status but rather what difference you made in the world. Can you feel the difference in your ability to breathe? But unfortunately, this isn’t our reality because many of us do care. We all try to “fit in.” Even Esther, who eventually stood up to Haman, changed her name because she too, wanted to be like everyone else. If God wanted us all to fit in and conform, then we would all be exactly the same. We would all look the same, have the same talents and skills, and share the same beliefs and thoughts. Honestly, the world would be so boring! There would be very little beauty. Does all nature look the same? Does every butterfly? We are each different in our own unique way. We are made in Gods image– B’Tzelem Elohim. We have all become so accustomed to seeing the world through such a small and yes, arrogant lens that we forget that God’s vision and view is far more vast. Perhaps we too should broaden our view. We have also learned through Torah to care about making a difference in the world which allows us to create a balance between the secular world and the spiritual world and balance our “masks”.

How do you feel about the different masks you wear? Do you feel authentic? Do you feel like you can truly be yourself? No matter the social situation? Did Queen Esther feel the same? Wearing a mask is such a drain on our bodies, minds and souls.

Becoming and being the authentic self who the Divine created us to be when breathing our soul into us would be so freeing.

What if we gathered everyone we knew from family, friends, co workers and acquaintances and said “It’s ok. I accept you as you are even with your faults.” Would the masks fall away?

Often, we all fear taking away the masks and showing vulnerability makes us weak, however the reality is, it only makes us stronger. At least it did for Queen Esther. Let us all be like Queen Esther and bravely remove our masks to be our true authentic selves.

YOUTH GROUP Our last few HOTTY events haven’t been anything extraordinary – in December we went out to dinner and then to a comedy show at the Basement Theater. Our February event was broomball – picture hockey on ice but in your sneakers and with brooms instead of hockey sticks. The HOTTYites had fun, played around, laughed and mostly just hung out with one another. Here is what I did find meaningful about those events – the HOTTYites laughing and smiling. Look at the pictures BELOW, you can see their faces! But why is that such a big deal? Teens’ lives today are tough – tougher than when I (or their parents) were growing up.

They take AP classes as freshmen; it’s not uncommon for them to be up until 1 or 2am finishing homework on any given night; to get into UGA they need to demonstrate that they are more impressive than their friends; the places that they used to find safe don’t feel that way anymore. Our teens are overworked, stressed, anxious, and scared. So, going back to the comedy show and broomball…at one point during each of these events I sat back and watched our teens – for a night they were able to forget about all of that, leave their worries and anxieties somewhere else, and just have fun, sing, cheer, be goofy, and laugh with their friends. That is the true power of youth group. Yes, I hope that I am helping to teach our teens to be responsible and accountable, compassionate and caring people, and the future leaders. But, providing them a space and a place where they can feel safe, a time to enjoy living in the moment and being with their friends -that’s what makes youth group such a unique and incredible experience!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SISTERHOOD PRESIDENT Hello all! Hard to believe we are approaching March and already we are experiencing gorgeous Atlanta spring days!

Sunday February 24th was one such day, and thanks to Leslie Swichkow, Robin Bledsoe and Barbara Feinberg we were able to “clean up” a portion of Coleman Road. We sported yellow reflector vests, large orange garbage bags and off we went!!! It was as much fun as one would expect picking up trash, but we got to yenta along the way while getting our steps in.

TBT Adult Education and Sisterhood Present: Rosh Chodesh—A Woman’s Circle

Rosh Chodesh is the celebration of the new moon and the new month, according to the Jewish calendar. Rosh Chodesh has long been recognized as a women’s holiday. In midrash Pirke DeRabbi Elezer, Chapter 45, we are told that in the incident of the Golden Calf, the women refused to relinquish their earnings to the men who were building the calf. As a reward, God gave them an extra holy day each month, free from work.

Each Month the women of TBT will gather to explore the issues women care about most, such as body image, friendship, relationships, family and more. Our themes will be based on each Jewish month and will be explored through discussions, arts & crafts, creative ritual, games, drama, cooking and more. The program will be held on the Tuesdays, closest to Rosh Chodesh from 7:30—9:00 PM at TBT. March 5, April 9, May 7, June 4.

B’NAI MITZVAH Karley Brielle Gotlin will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on March 9, 2019. Karley is the daughter of Greg and Melissa Gotlin and sister to Zoe, the granddaughter of Ronald and Susan Gotlin and Bernard and Gayle Kranz, and great granddaughter to Rita Brody. Karley is in 7th grade at Autrey Mill Middle School in Johns Creek. Since Karley was seven, she has been playing club soccer with Concorde Fire and is excited to be selected to play in the Atlanta JCC Maccabi Games this summer.

Karley is a member of the National Charity League, a mother-daughter organization that lasts from 7th—12th grade. Through this organization, Karley and her mom commit their time to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. During the past year, they have volunteered with numerous organizations including Meals by Grace, Ronald McDonald House, Special Pops Tennis, FurKids and the Drake House. As part of Karley’s mitzvah project, she has raised money for one child to go to Camp Braveheart for a week through the camp scholarship and 25 backpacks are being filled with all the supplies the counselors need. Camp Braveheart is a Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta summer camp program specifically for children who have a have had a heart transplant or congenital heart defect like Karley. In her free time, Karley loves to spend lots of time with friends and family and is so thankful for everyone that will be coming from near and far for supporting and celebrating this very important milestone. In addition, Karley would like to extend a special thank you to Rabbi Shuval-Weiner and Cantor Kassel for preparing her for her Bat Mitzvah.

We work our way through the New Testament beginning with Jesus and then move into the early church of the first and second centuries. We will also look at some key Christian doctrine and how those beliefs are played out in Christian worship and, ideally, in Christian living.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN Our Annual Campaign is well underway. TBT’s Annual Giving Campaign remains the backbone of a strong financial base for our congregation. While dues and tuition help pay for the much of the cost to run the synagogue, we also rely on philanthropic annual gifts from TBT congregants.
