Religious Pluralism is a Necessity – The Value of Interfaith Dialogue One of the most meaningful encounters I have had is to learn and engage in conversations with people of faith who aren’t Jewish. Learning about others, their ideals and their challenges, along with sharing the gifts of our own Jewish community with others is an enriching experience. I love finding common ground and appreciate where we differ. That is a true encounter with pluralism. When I do have these conversations, they bring me closer to my own faith in Judaism and my place in our Covenant. Living in Roswell, I have developed a far stronger appreciation for pluralism. From a self-serving point of view, which I don’t apologize for in any way, I think it is of great value for others in our local community to have encounters with Jews and get to know our community a little bit better. And of course, learning about others brings down barriers to trust and builds roads to shared hopes and mutual understanding. Dialogue and help advance a theology of pluralism that will put us side by side – shoulder to shoulder – to confront bigotry, intolerance, and hatred. Rabbi James Rudin wrote that “…dialogue is not a luxury, but rather a necessity that provides a spiritual mooring on the planet, so billions of people who believe differently can reside together in peace…. Developing a theology of pluralism…is a clear recognition and firm belief that there is and will continue to be extraordinary plurality of spiritual expressions, beliefs and actions all operating under a universal God.” (From Rudin’s Christians & Jews—Faith to Faith) My friends, Dr. Lane Alderman, the Senior Pastor of Roswell Presbyterian Church, and Bassem Fakhoury, a lay leader at the Roswell Community Masjid (“masjid is the Arabic word for “mosque”) and speaker for the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta, will each take a turn to teach and respond to a three session class that will address fundamental truths within Judaism, Islam and Christianity. Both have become good friends of mine and both are invested in strengthening our local community by advancing pluralism. There is still much prejudice and misunderstanding out there in each of our houses to go around. So the three of us hope that we can bring Jewish, Christians and Muslims together in a safe place to learn, ask our questions (respectfully), and celebrate the common ground we all share. EveryONE of Us Can Make A Difference You have heard me say before that of all the activities I am involved in as President, Fund Raising is my least favorite. Having said that, it is still a critical activity that drives our ability to manage our synagogue’s budget. This year is no exception. But, I do have some exciting news to share. We kicked off our 2013-2014 Annual Campaign that we dubbed “EveryONE Matters” just after the High Holy Days. Our goal, as you probably have seen from articles written by Ruben Braiter, our fundraising chair, was $100,000 and 100% participation from all our families. The gift amount didn’t matter; what was important was that everyone have some “skin in the game.”

If you have participated in the annual campaign this year already, then I thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you haven’t yet made a contribution or commitment then I would ask that you consider participating in some meaningful fashion. EveryONE truly does matter, and every pledge will move us forward and closer to getting our spiritual home back in shape. L’Shalom
Our annual campaign is used to fund a portion of our operating budget which includes capital improvements and major repairs. Our Nadiv Lev commitment program doesn’t totally cover all our operating expenses. Due to a couple of generous one-time donations so far this year, our campaign to date has raised over $159,000. This is of course larger than our dollar goal but sadly, is sorely lacking in terms of our participation goal which stands at 26%.

Friends, we are in a position to do something very special this year given this strong start. If our entire membership will jump on the bandwagon and make meaningful contributions to our campaign from now until the end of June, we may be able to exceed our dream goal of $200,000. Our House committee is working with a long list of projects sorely needing completion sooner rather than later. Our facility continues to show signs of its age both inside and out. Reaching our dream goal would allow us to make these projects happen. For example, we could refurbish our sanctuary, social hall and lobby with new carpet, paint and fabrics, a project that was put on hold last year after we discovered our river birch trees that surround our building were choking off plumbing lines and infiltrating our building’s foundation and had to be removed. We would also be able to redo our outside landscaping and correct significant drainage problems that are causing water leakage into our building. Other major projects on the horizon include replacing many windows in the school wing, stucco cleaning and repair on the back side of the building and school wing, and drainage repair and 4

Campaign TBT: EveryONE Matters Update We are six months into our annual campaign and are making great progress towards our goals. Our financial goal for this year’s campaign is to raise $100,000. I am pleased to announce that with the help of our generous donors, including a few large contributions, we have exceeded that goal. Exceeding our financial goal will not only help balance our budget and support the exciting programming offered at TBT, it will enable us to accelerate improvements to our facility. Participation In addition to our goal of raising $100,000, we have a goal of 100% participation. Unfortunately we are still a long way from meeting that goal. Remember that there is no minimum pledge amount. A donation of as little as $18 from each family that has not participated would have a significant impact on Temple Beth Tikvah. Educator’s Message SOJOURN presented a workshop to our 7th grade class. The workshop focused on stereotypes, self worth, self esteem and tolerance. They also focused on anti-bullying to stand up to bully type situations. This all tied into the current unit about the Holocaust and anti-Semitism. The class will be going on a field trip to the Bremen Museum to continue their unit on the Holocaust. It was so wonderful to see so many parents participating with their children. It was truly a great experience. Testing for our 4th and 5th grade students is continuing. We started the first round of Hebrew testing for our 6th grade students this month. We have a very busy March planned. Our 6 th grade students are busy practicing for a Purim play they will be presenting to the entire school on March 16 th. March 21st our 4th grade students will be hosting the Shabbat, oneg starts at 6:00, services begin at 6:30. The Georgia Ensemble Theatre will be performing And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank on Sunday, March 23rd. Our school is hosting this performance for 6th and 7th grade classes for several synagogues. We are expecting 250 – 300 students to attend this performance. Beginning the end of March we will have a long break. The last day of classes will be Tuesday, March 25th. We will resume classes on Sunday, April 27 th. A lot of wonderful things are going on at the school as well as a lot of learning.

Early Childhood Education Center Part of what we strive to achieve in the Early Childhood Education Center is teaching Jewish values. We spend a lot of time teaching the children how to live Jewishly and how to be good people. The words Mitzvot, Tzedakah, Tikkun Olam, and Derekh Eretz are commonly heard in our classrooms on a daily basis. But at the end of January, we brought the words Gemilut Hasadim (righteous deeds) to a whole new level. On January 28, the city was paralyzed by weather conditions. Most people had stories to tell about their adventures in trying to get home. The ECEC also has a story…. Looking out of my window that Tuesday morning, as a Native Atlantan, I thought “yea snow!” “It is so beautiful! “ But I wasn’t panicked or worried. I sent an email out to our parents letting them know that we would release the children at 1:30, our normal dismissal time. Then, I received an alert from Roswell City stating the roads were getting bad. We immediately sprang into action telling parents to come get their child(ren) as soon as possible. But the damage was done, it was too late. Coleman and Pine Grove roads were already at a stand still. Patient parents were arriving slowly, as I became more concerned about road conditions. Then the wonderful happened. A father who had already come to pickup his daughter and safely got her home, ventured back out into the nightmare to return to pick up more children whose parents were unable to get here. When we praised him for his good deed, his answer was simply, “I’m from Michigan, this is just a normal day!” That same father offered many more times to come back to the school to pick up children and safely deliver them home. Worried about the teachers that work here, I asked them to go home. But one teacher, Ms. Linda, stayed, as she said she didn’t want to leave me alone. She stayed, not considering her safety, her family, or herself in anyway. She entertained the few children we had left and kept them happy and unafraid. At 4:30, we had one child left, and her mother could not get to her. Ms. Linda packed the three year old up, put her in her car and headed home. They, of course, became stranded, but were luckily rescued by Ms. Linda’s husband, and the three year old was able to have an awesome sleep over at Ms. Linda’s house! That day, the ECEC parents demonstrated to their children the importance of Gemilut Hasadim. They came together as a community, emailing, texting and checking on each other. Parents were calling and texting me to see if I arrived home safely. Teachers were checking on each other and talking to us to keep our minds sane as we tried to venture home. We came together like I have never seen before. Thank you to all of the ECEC parents and teachers for coming together and helping each other through a very stressful time. Times like Snowpocalyse 2014 remind us of the importance of being part of community. And I for one, feel fortunate a grateful to be a part of the ECEC and TBT communities.

B’nai Mitzvah Meredith Berger will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on March 22, 2014. Meredith is the daughter of Patty and Gordon Berger and sister to Bryan. She is the granddaughter of Leonard Berger of Roswell, Georgia and Louise Singletary of Valdosta, Georgia. Meredith attends Hightower Trail Middle School where she is an Honor student and plays the violin. Meredith loves to dance and has been doing it since she was two years old. She is currently in a performing company at Rhythm Dance Center. Meredith also enjoys cheering in the Pope Junior Program. For Meredith’s mitzvah project, she has chosen to work with Mostly Mutts, a non-profit animal rescue and adoption center. Meredith is looking forward to celebrating her Bat Mitzvah with her family and friends. Jacob Lev Alayoff will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on March 22, 2014. Jacob is the son of Bruce Alayof and Belinda Alayof, stepson to Kristen Alayof, and brother to Gabe Alayof. He is in the seventh grade at The Epstein School. His hobbies include basketball, tennis, and computers. Jonathan Aaron Getty will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on March 29, 2014. Jon is the son of Cindy and Ed Getty and the younger brother of Ben, 22, Sam, 20, Zach, 17, and Josh, 15. He is in the 7th grade and is an Honor Roll student at Dickerson Middle School. Jon is an avid sports fan. Jon plays basketball and is a year round swimmer. In his free time, he enjoys playing outside and watching sports with his brothers and friends.
Youth Group HOTTY (9-12th Grade) WHAT DID WE DO THIS PAST MONTH? We had an awesome time at NFTY-SAR Winter Kallah (held at Temple Kol Emeth in Marietta, GA) in January. It was a great weekend filled with learning, singing, praying, bowling, and dancing! Congratulations to our two HOTTYites who were elected to the NFTY-SAR Regional Board for the 2014-2015 year: Sam Marks (Religious & Cultural Vice-President) and Brian Lenhard (Membership Vice President).

WHAT DID WE DO THIS PAST MONTH? JYG had a record number of participants attend NFTY-SAR Hatikvah Kallah at The Temple! We had 22 JYG’ers and 5 HOTTYites (who went as Hatikvah Helpers & Songleaders) there for the weekend. We were so excited to have such a great group. Everyone had an awesome time and is looking forward to their next Kallah! UP NEXT: Join JYG on March 9 for our annual Social Action event. Each year, we spend one Sunday out in the community doing something to help others –volunteering at a soup kitchen, a retirement home, etc. It’s a great way for JYG to give back. Temple Beth Tikvah and JF&CS Synagogue Engagement
Moas Chitim – Passover Food Drive Moas Chitim (“wheat money”) is an ancient custom in which Jews provide funds to Jews in need for the purchase of Passover food. JF&CS supports a group of dedicated volunteers who have taken on the responsibility of Moas Chitim in Atlanta. JF&CS coordinates the distribution of food and financial assistance for these Jewish families. Last year we gave out over 240 bags of Passover food to Jewish Atlantans in need. You can help by collecting specific Passover items (all marked Kosher for Passover) and place them in the barrel marked JF&CS Kosher Food Pantry. JF&CS - Trauma Related Stress Disorders We are now busy preparing to welcome Family Promise guests for March 30 through April 6. It's time once again to get ready to host homeless families that desperately need our help. So far, close to 150 TBT members and member children have volunteered since the start of the TBT Family Promise program (March 2013). Lots of people doing really good work. Breast Cancer Survivor Group for the Jewish Community Come join our support group! The monthly support group meetings are for all interested people who have had cancer, who are going through treatment or surgeries, and / or who have been recently diagnosed, as well as for those who might have questions pertinent to breast cancer.
Experiencing something traumatic like an assault, accident or disaster can have a significant impact on one’s day-to-day life and overall sense of personal security. It can cause emotional symptoms like fear, anxiety and sadness as well as physical symptoms like insomnia, racing heartbeats and becoming easily startled. Many people will experience forms of trauma in their lifetime, and most of them will be able to process it and get back to their normal level of functioning within a few days. But about 10 percent will develop either Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The symptoms of a trauma related stress disorder often are intense. Individuals may experience intrusive memories, flashbacks and nightmares that cause them to relive the experience and anxiety that is so intense their lives are disrupted.. They will try to avoid anything that reminds them of what has happened. Both ASD and PTSD are treatable conditions. With proper counseling and treatment, it is possible to make a full recovery. Someone who suspects he or she is experiencing a trauma-related disorder should seek help immediately. The sooner that happens, the shorter the recovery period could be. It's Not Too Late to Become a Reading Tutor Consider volunteering for the National Council of Jewish Women's Atlanta Jewish Coalition for Literacy. The Coalition's goal is to give children, who face challenges with their reading, an opportunity to become more reading proficient with the help of a volunteer tutor. Even though many of the reading tutors have been working with children since the beginning of the school year, there are still five months of school left for someone who is able to tutor one or two children. HUNGER WALK 2014 In Deuteronomy we are commanded, "Tzedek tzedek tirdof - Justice justice shall you pursue." There is no justice in knowing that in Georgia, the number of households receiving food stamps has increased by over 62%. Nor is their justice in knowing that 1 in every 4 Georgia children live in a food insecure household. And so our House of Hope must join together to pursue an end to hunger in our community.
