Bechol Dor V’Dor In every generation you must see yourself as if you were personally redeemed from the narrowness. The Seder, our annual living drama, invites us to psychically, spiritually and existentially, feel life’s movement from the narrow Min Ha-meitzar karati Yah into the wide expanse of liberation Annai Merchav Yah. (psalm 118) This Passover of 5781 marks 13 months that we have been struggling with the COVID-19 plague, we have been living in the narrow space. As we gather this year, in physical presence or digital presence with our friends and loved ones, and walk through the Haggadah we will experience Seder like no other time. Last year was unique, our Zoom Seders were novel, some might even say somewhat exhilarating. We discovered and marveled in what we were able to accomplish and how very flexible and creative we could be. But this year is strikingly different, because we are different for having lived in this state of pandemic for more than a year. Mah Nishtana HaShana HaZeh? Over the past year, few of us have escaped some injury from this disease; the passing of a loved one, and there have been so many deaths. For others, loss of employment or savings. There have been lost opportunities, so many simchas, life’s celebrations cancelled or negatively impacted. This my friends is Mitzrayim- this is the constriction of life, the

narrowness, the darkness, the fear. How many have cried out, asking when it will all end? But as our tradition teaches Tikvah, hope, is the most precious gift that there is in life. The ability to hold fast to the ideal that no matter how dark it may seem today, the dawn will come. Yet, it is also extremely fragile, it can wither in the face of hardship and disappointment. The Seder-the Exodus experience, is our story of triumph over hopelessness. So this year, as we open our Haggadot, on our awesome night of questions, let us reflect on this year and the lessons that we hold. Let us each ask ourselves, what have I lost, what have I found? What does redemption look like for me, for us all? How will I feel when it finally comes? How will I be different after the redemption? Every journey has moments of hardship, discovery and thankfulness. This year, let us raise those stories up at our Seders and in so doing find great meaning. Kol HaNishama t’Hallel Yah Zissen Pesach to all.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR

President

What’s Happening? We are coming up on a year of COVID and have all experienced life like never before. So many questions but no answers. How to manage day to day much less making plans for the future? It is a hard situation to juggle as an individual, so imagine having to make decisions for a large group! That is what we, the Board of Trustees (BOT) of TBT, have been facing since last spring. Back then, we had no idea that the pandemic would be so open ended and therefore made plans for the short term and assumed that the longer term “normal” would return after a few months. You know what they say about “assumptions”! While I have no concrete answers to what will happen in the future, I’d like you to know what has happened since the decision to limit in-person activity at the TBT facility was made last March. While that was a difficult decision, It is important to note that although in-person activity has been scaled back to our most essential needs (i.e., ECEC, B’nai Mitzvahs, Shabbat services) our online and outdoor programming has been the most prolific in the community. The BOT has met every month to address questions that have arisen and to make sure that we still serve you, our congregants. Let us start with the facility. Early on, we formed a COVID Committee comprised of TBT BOT members, doctors, educators, clergy, facility people, a security consultant, and a CDC employee. This group has formed our policy about use of the building. After the State of Georgia mandate to close was partially lifted, the Committee came up with our limited attendance policy for services. As the school year began, decisions were made about how to continue the ECEC and religious school. This committee has met on an ad hoc basis as questions have arisen. It will continue to monitor any improvement in the epidemic that will allow for us to begin using our facility. Financially, the BOT and the Budget & Finance Committee (B&F) have been on top of the monetary impact that COVID has had. Our current year budget approved at the Annual Meeting in May was a deficit of approximately $50,000. If there is any silver lining in the COVID situation, it is that our current year financial status reflects the savings of not operating the facility. Also, we availed ourselves of the PPP program that was offered by the Federal government. Lastly, our congregants have been overwhelmingly supportive of TBT and have given gifts of the heart in excess of what we had budgeted. That’s the good news. The longer-term concern is that once we return to “normal” and the building reopens, will we return to a deficit operation? Prior to this year, our surplus reserves from prior years had eroded to the point that we could not continue at a deficit for much longer. COVID has likely bought us a year or two reprieve, but this issue is a long

term existential question. The B&F group is currently in the process of creating a budget for next year. That will be tricky and may require budgets for different scenarios. We’ll see how that turns out. Our Long-Term Strategy committee has been keeping an eye open for any developing ideas for how Temple life will emerge after COVID. Most synagogues, as well as churches, have experienced a diminution in membership over the past few years, but COVID has accelerated that trend. How big an impact this trend will have on our future and how we plan for it will be a key. Input from you, the congregation is certainly welcome. We know that the virtual world will be part of our future. In that vein, the BOT has worked with the House Committee in making sure we have the equipment to make that happen. Our High Holiday services are a testament to how hard people have worked to provide a meaningful virtual experience. The Nominating Committee has been meeting since last November. I’m happy to say that we have experienced a new phenomenon. We had more people interested in serving as part of TBT leadership than we had spots coming open! I think you’ll be excited to see the proposed slate when it is presented in April. The slate will be presented to the BOT for approval in the February meeting. The BOT approved TBT’s participation with Be’Chol Lashon, a national organization, to begin offering diversity training for our congregation. Cantor Kassel will be leading that initiative. The BOT has also approved our participation in the Legacy Heritage Foundation’s OnBoard Program. This program is an honor and was a competitive grant application process. There will be a grant for hiring a consultant to analyze improving our BOT function. The second, and bigger, grant will be a two-year program matching grant for up to $100,000 (in total, not per year) for improving the operating capacity of our Temple. More on that in future months. These are but two of several grant initiatives our clergy, staff and leadership are engaged in to better improve the life and function of our TBT community. I hope that you can see that while it seems that TBT has been dormant, there has actually been a lot of work by our BOT, clergy and office staff to keep the wheels turning. PASSOVER SYMBOLS Passover is coming and we have grabbed the most important symbols for a quick refresher for what you’ll need. Haggadah: The guidebook for the journey. Spoiler: key concept is that each person see him or herself as having personally come forth out of Mitzrayim. During the seder, we don’t just tell the story of the Exodus, we see, smell, feel, and taste liberation. To help us do so we use the Seder plate (ka’arah). You will find five or six items, each of which symbolizes a part of the Passover story.

Matzah - One is obligated to avoid hametz throughout Passover, but the obligation to eat matzah is limited to fulfilling the rituals of the first/second night seder alone. Therefore, communities should ensure that each home has at least enough matzah for each person to fulfill the obligation of ‫אכילת‬ ‫ מצה‬eating matzah, for [each] seder. Think, basically, about one piece of matzah per person, per seder.

Karpas - the spring greens. This can be any vegetable. [In Israel, boiled potato is a common food for karpas]

•

Maror - If horseradish is not available, people are encouraged to find other vegetables or fruits that can bring a tear to the eye if consumed raw: hot peppers, fresh ginger, mustard greens, raw lemon. In Israel, romaine lettuce is commonly used as maror.

•

Egg and Roasted Shankbone on Seder Plate -- A roasted beet and rice (if consuming kitniyot) may take the place of the shankbone and egg.(Pesahim 114b)

Kitneyot: Due to the unprecedented disruptions in the food supply, the CJLS encourages everyone to consider putting aside the Ashkenazic custom of Kitneyot, eschewing legumes (beans, lentils, corn and rice), if only for Passover 5781 (2021). TBT RELIGIOUS SCHOOL How is it already Spring?! Last year at this time, TBT religious school responded to the growing pandemic with a quick pivot to primarily virtual classes. Our teachers did an incredible job mastering the ins and outs of Zoom and its breakout rooms, screen sharing, chat function and more. As a school and a synagogue kehillah this past year, we have not only survived, but we have thrived. Attendance and participation amongst our students remains strong and we’ve seen incredible projects and activities come out of each of our classes. The school year will be coming to an end in just a few months, but not before we engage in more learning and several unique in-person opportunities.

Just as we did for Tu B’shevat and Purim, you are invited to TBT to get ready for Passover (3.21), celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut (4.18) and give back to our community at our Mitzvah Day (5.2). All three of our remaining Sababa programs will take place outside, with precautions in place to keep us all safe and healthy. I sincerely hope you will join us! Of course, classes on zoom will continue as usual, with tefillah (prayer) and shira (song) to start our Sunday morning together. ECEC UPDATE Passover is coming up and the Preschool children are getting excited. They are learning about the Haggadah and specifically the four questions. Well, what is different this year than in all other years. In the years past, we have family members visit, enjoy a performance from our children and then we have a model seder. This year, due to COVID-19, we will have a model Seder in our classrooms with the students only and no family visitors. The children will learn the customs of Passover and the various traditions in a fun and meaningful way. We will learn and answer the four questions and have a chance to make matzah, which is always a child favorite! On a warmer note….Summer is quickly approaching, and we are excited to being registration for camp. There will be outside activities, water play, art projects and so much more. You can sign up weekly and choose how many days you would like to attend. Please spread the word and let friends and family know about our incredible camp. TBT YOUTH GROUP The Southern Jewish Resource Network for Gender & Sexual Diversity (SOJOURN) mission is to affirm and empower LGBTQ+ people across the South. Every year at their annual fundraiser, Purim Off Ponce, they honor members of our community with the Michael Jay Kinsler Rainmaker Award. At this year's 15th anniversary of POP, they will honor 20 young people for their demonstration of generosity, creativity, and inspiration. While 2020 has been a challenging year, these youth have pivoted like never before. This year’s Purim Off

Ponce will recognize LBGTQ+ youth and allies, 20 under 21, many of whom—as we will learn—have dug deep and emerged as remarkable creators and doers. We are so incredibly proud that two of these remarkable youth, Sloan Salinas and Ethan Asher, come from our very own community.

Sloan Salinas is a senior at Milton High School. She has maintained all A’s while taking 5 AP classes. She's Chief of Staff in her school's Model UN, Secretary in the National English Honor Society and a member of the National Honor Society. She's also the president of the Jewish Student Union at her high school. She is a talented artist. Her art work has won national acclaim in several prestigious art shows, and she even sold her first piece of original art. While Sloan has yet to select which university she'll attend, she's interested in studying electrical engineering, with the intention of working in the field of holography. She is part of Temple Beth Tikvah’s high school Kivunim class and a member of our high school youth group, HOTTY.

Ethan Asher is a freshman at Stanford University. While attending virtual classes this year Ethan has been busy. He organized a coalition of youth led organizations to turn out the youth vote for the Georgia Senate Run Off election and is now working to secure funding for youth led initiatives around the country. He is serving on the White House Office of Public Engagement Youth Committee. He was also an organizer for the three-day Earth Day Live virtual livestream.

To all of the 8th Graders Welcome to HOTTY!!

SIMCHAS! Chava Natanya Limor (Eve) will be called to the Torah on March 13, 2021. She is the daughter of Judy & Josef Limor and the sister of older siblings, Jordan and Abby. Eve is a 7th grader at The GLOBE Academy. She is a competitive gymnast, so spends much of her free time at practice, but when the opportunity presents itself, Eve also enjoys knitting and crocheting, hiking with the family, and hanging out with her friends. Eve attends Camp Barney Medintz during the summer. For her mitzvah project, Eve collected winter jackets and donated them to the community at F.L. Stanton Elementary School in Atlanta Public School System.

Ezra Nathaniel Garris will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on April 10, 2021. He is the son of Robert and Lisa Garris and brother to Emma.

Ezra is a 7th grader at Dickerson Middle School in Marietta. He currently plays viola in the Orchestra and enjoys playing soccer, basketball and skateboarding. Ezra loves spending time with his family at home with his dog, Boomer and cat, Lucky. Ezra is learning a lot about Judaism and his ancestry while preparing for his Bar Mitzvah and looks forward to his big day.

Jay Janawitz will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on March 20, 2021. He is the son of Michelle & Jamie Janawitz and brother to Jonathan and Justin. He is the grandson of Ina Goldenthal, Genevieve Janawitz, and the late Barry Goldenthal and the late William Janawitz, of blessed memory. Jay is an honors student in the 7th grade at Northwestern Middle School. Jay loves playing soccer and spending time outside with friends. Jay plays soccer for Rush Union Soccer Club and also for the Georgia Olympic Development Team. For his Mitzvah project, Jay chose an organization that has been close to his heart. He Organized a 5k walk to raise money for Emory University Lewy Body Dementia Association Research Center. With this effort and the generosity of our community Jay raised over $4,000. Jay would like to thank Rabbi Shuval-Weiner, Cantor Kassel and Amy Peskin for helping him prepare for his Bar Mitzvah as well as all of his teachers at TBT for helping him reach this milestone.

Leo Ziskind, son of Mark Ziskind and Shana Ziskind, will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on April 17, 2021. Leo is the Grandson of Sam Abraham, of Phoenix, Arizona, Steve and Reva Ziskind, Dr. John Morris Stallings, and the late Nancy Stallings, of Memphis, Tennessee. Leo has 2 siblings, Eli (age 3) and Molly (age 15). Leo attends Beth Tikvah Hebrew School as a member of Mrs. Rhonda Povlot’s class. He is a 7th grader at Mabry Middle School, in Marietta, GA. Leo plays the trombone in the advanced band at Mabry Middle, enjoys watching movies, participating in scouting activities with his Boy Scouts of America Troop, and spending time with family and friends. For 3 summers, Leo has attended Camp Barney Medintz, and he hopes to attend camp this year as well. As part of his Bat Mitzvah study and requirements, Leo is leading several Mitzvah projects for good causes and charitable organizations, including the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the Baddour Center, a home for adults with special needs in Senatobia, MS, and also where Leo’s Uncle Brian Ziskind lives.

SIMCHAS! Nathan Hayes Krapf will be called to the Torah on April 24, 2021. He is the son of Veronica & Glen Krapf and younger brother to Ethan. Natan Ari is blessed to have loving grandparents in Paulette & Michael Faber (Savannah. GA), Billie Harp (Gadsden, AL), and Ron & Jeannine Benefield (Dothan, AL). He is adored by 8 aunts (Heidi, Gail, Rikki, Valerie, Stephanie, Elizabeth, April, & Olivia), 6 uncles (Jack, Ritchie, Joshua, Jeffrey, Scott & Kyle), 17 cousins (David, Elise, Allison, Joseph, Erin, Lana, Lucy, Hudson, Hunter, Megan, JuliAnn, Ella, Elijah, Emma Graham, Grady & Reagan). Nathan is a 7th grader at Elkins Pointe, where he may be shadowing a friend with diabetes to make sure he is safe, or anchoring and working behind the scenes to produce "Titan News Network"! The past two years he has competed and placed in the school's Spelling Bee. In addition, he has participated in band and in drama. During the summer, Nathan likes to swim for his neighborhood's swim team, attending various Roswell City camps along with MJCCA camps. Natan Ari loves to spend time with his family, animate, draw, act, but most of all, loves animals! He is happiest playing with animals at "PetLand", so it is only appropriate that his Mitzvah Project is raising money for BANNING PUPPY MILLS. He has raised $500 for this effort. Nathan is sunshine to all he comes in contact with, gives the best hugs, enjoys Nerf gun fights and making people laugh. He especially enjoys spending time with his best friend, William.
