“The days are long, but the years are brief.” This saying is often attributed to the rearing of children. They come into the world and before one realizes, in the blink of an eye, the years have flown by.

I have come to realize that this saying is true for all aspects of life. This time of pandemic has certainly intensified our understanding of the fleeing nature of time. As I sit here writing this article, I find in almost impossible to believe that the last time that we as a congregation gathered, in person for the congregational celebration of Purim was in 2020, literally two days before the world as we would know it changed and our congregation “went dark.”

Well, two years later, each day, more and more people “pop by” the shul, coming through our doors with the biggest smiles and exclamations of “It’s so good to be back! It’s good to be home!”

With the springtime rapidly approaching, we have two of our most beloved holiday celebrations of Purim (March 16) and Passover (April 15-22) on the horizon, as well as several outstanding social events taking place in TBT’s Tam-Blank Social Hall: An evening with the Joe Alterman Trio (March 12), Camp Jenny Bingo Night (March 19), Shabbat Across TBT (April 29).

Much time has passed since 2020. Sadly, we can’t get those lost days back, but we can step boldly and joyfully into all the days that are ahead. Let us come together this spring to make new memories, reconnect with old friends and meet the many wonderful people who have chosen TBT as their spiritual home since the beginning of 2020.

And now, for a little bit about the upcoming holiday of Purim and Passover!

Both Purim and Passover occurred outside the land of Israel, in Persia and Egypt. Both involved the near extermination of the people of Israel. Esther and Moses both risked their lives when they appeared before their rulers to rescue their people. Haman, his family and Pharaoh's army all perished because of their rigidness,

egos and intense hatred.

Purim, or the Feast of Lots, is a joyous holiday that recounts the saving of the Jewish people from a threatened massacre during the Persian period (539-330 BCE). The story of Purim is recounted in the Book of Esther (Ketuvim), and it is read this year on the 14th and 15th of Adar II (March 16-17). The holiday is celebrated in a spirited festival-like atmosphere that includes costumes, masks and the eating of Hamantashen.

Passover begins Friday evening April 15th, and ends Friday, April 22nd (or the 23rd for those who keep the 8th day.) Yizkor will be recited Friday morning, April 22nd at 10 a.m.

The primary mitzvot of Passover are 1) eating Matzah for the 7-day period of the holiday; 2) discussing Pesach, Matzah & Marror; and 3) the retelling of the narrative of our redemption “B’khol dor va-dor hayav adam lirot et atzmo k’ilu hu yatzah mi-Mitzrayim” — “All people, in every generation, must see themselves as having experienced the Exodus from Egypt.”

The seder is much more than a history lesson; it is our yearly re-enactment of the liberation and continuity of the Jewish people. A Haggadah should be read, and its contents discussed. (There are many wonderful Haggadot available for every age and stage of life.)

Both Purim and Passover are story-based holidays, with lessons to be learned and discoveries to be made. We are encouraged to put ourselves into the narrative. How would we have acted in the same situation? With which characters do we most align and why? What are the takeaways for us in this moment of our lives today?

Don’t skip over the stories—ask good questions— reconnect with our heritage, our tradition. L’Chayim!

A Few Words About Passover “Ilu hotzi, hotzi-anu, hotzi-anu mi-Mitzrayim. Dayeinu!”

If God had only taken us out of Egypt – That would have been enough!

The Hebrew word for Egypt is Mitzrayim, and inside that word are the root letters having to do with “narrowness.” When we were freed from Egypt, we were freed from a narrow place and space – physically, mentally and spiritually. It’s fairly easy to draw a connection from this ancient history to the past two years of COVID-era existence. We have felt so very constricted and have yearned for certain freedoms we previously took for granted.

How well we’ve experienced that in an instant our lives can change, sometimes drastically, sometimes not – sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. My hope for all of us is that we take to heart the words in the Haggadah that call us to really experience (not just talk about) what it feels to be delivered from that which constricts us. This kind of personal experience is the only thing that will motivate us to make personal and societal changes in the spirit of Tikun Olam.

Will Hope Spring Eternal This Spring?

It is mid-February as I write this. Yesterday, it was 66 degrees outside, and I saw flowers beginning to bloom. It was such an inspiring day; one that makes you feel glad to be alive. I felt something that I hadn’t felt in a while -- hope, that we can soon escape the malaise that COVID has cursed us with. Sure, winter will still be with us for a while, but I look forward to the warmer days and brighter horizons.

It was March of 2020 when COVID began to change our lives dramatically. We went into a bunker mentality not knowing what the future would bring. People’s hope at that time centered on safety and avoidance of the pandemic. Little thought was given to the point in time where we would begin to think about re-emerging from our cocoons and reentry into “normal” life again. Over the past two years, we have learned a number of lessons about life and normalcy that we had taken for granted. People are now tired of quarantines, virtual school, Zoom, the lack of interpersonal contact, uncertainty of planning vacations and family events, and the like. With the Omicron surge now waning, there is a feeling of hope that we may soon learn to live with COVID until a preventative/cure can be found.

Quoting Adam Sutcliffe in the Princeton University Press https://press.princeton.edu/ideas/what-is-jewish-hope, “How, in a global pandemic, can we look forward to the future with hope? The economic and political landscape that COVID-19 will leave in its wake is alarmingly uncertain. We may have to adjust to unwelcome and awkward changes in how we

experience some of our most cherished pleasures, such as travel, teaching and learning, and the forging of intimacy. Nurturing hopes for the future, beyond the most basic horizons of survival and damage limitation, might well in these times seem a naïve indulgence.

Without hope, though, we also lose the frameworks of meaning and purpose that give structure to our lives. In the Western tradition, keeping faith in a better future lies at the heart of the Bible, in God’s covenant with the children of Israel. The Jewish people are destined for great things, God repeatedly tells them, as long as they sustain their commitment to this mysteriously inescapable bond.”

At the beginning of my Presidency, I spoke of liminality – facing unknown change in what we are used to and comfortable with – and I believe we are starting to see a preview of the future, a future of hope. As we enter the spring, I wish many things for TBT. Most of them involve reengaging as a congregation, rediscovering our love and passion for Judaism and TBT, attracting and retaining members, growing our religious schools, seeing congregants in person at services, having volunteers step forward, and additional financial support when you are able.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Once again, two of my favorite holidays are just around the corner.

Purim falls during the month of Adar, and when the month begins, we say “Be happy, it’s Adar,” because PURIM IS THAT MUCH FUN! Purim allows us to be silly while we celebrate the Jewish people’s survival, despite Haman’s murderous plot. It is a celebration of our resilience and of the victory of good over evil.

We are to perform four mitzvot on Purim. The first mitzvah is to hear the story of Purim, while the second is to give Mishloach Manot (Purim gifts.) The third Purim mitzvah is to celebrate with a festive meal, and giving tzedakah is the fourth.

TBT religious school will help you take part in all four mitzvot!

On Wednesday, March 16th we will celebrate with a Purim spiel relaying the story of Purim, a festive dinner, carnival and costume parade. You do not want to miss this! As well, all are invited and encouraged to take part in our Mishloach Manot program, and of course, we collect tzedakah each week in religious school. So, sign up for our Purim celebration, get

your costumes ready, order Mishloach Manot for others, and fully embrace the fun and wackiness of Purim with us!

A month later, we will be dusting off our hagaddot and chopping up apples to make charoset. I love Passover for its meaningful connection to our past, for its traditions and opportunities to create new ones, and yes, for the food! The first seder will be on April 15th. To help you prepare, parents and families of all religious school students are invited to our Passover Sababa program on April 10th. We will be learning all about this holiday through food, song, art, and more. We promise a meaningful morning together at TBT. It’s almost registration time for the 2022-23 school year.

PRESCHOOL Purim is such a fun holiday for the children. Our preschoolers get to dress up in costumes and march around the sanctuary.

They will shake their groggers and shout, “Boo, hiss!” whenever they hear Haman’s name. Everyone is excited to make hamantaschen. It’s so hard for our young friends to decide whether to fill them with delicious chocolate or yummy strawberry, grape or raspberry filling. Our Purim carnival is always so much fun!

Passover is also coming up, so we started planting parsley to use at our seder. The children are making wonderful Passover crafts. If you are anything like me, I always decorate my seder table with crafts made from years gone by.

Summer is quickly upon us, and we are excited to let everyone know that we are currently accepting registration

We will have lots of outdoor play for camp along with our awesome water slide. TBT Preschool is a learn through play school with intentionally small classes. Our school is growing, and we are so happy to have so many wonderful families attending camp and preschool.

YOUTH GROUP March 19 is HOTTY’s annual Camp Jenny Bingo Fundraiser! You might be wondering what that is, or why you should join us.

So, let me tell you a little bit about Camp Jenny: Camp Jenny is a summer camp hosted at Camp Coleman over Memorial Day weekend. The campers who attend Camp Jenny are from F.L. Stanton Elementary, a school in an impoverished area of Atlanta. The campers must meet certain character standards, such as participation in school and kindness towards others, in order to go to camp, where they enjoy the activities and atmosphere of camp, as well as the love and attention of their counselors, all of whom are teens from synagogues around the Southeast. It costs approximately $500 to send one camper to Camp Jenny.

With the support of our congregation, we have been able to raise enough money at our Bingo Fundraiser to send around five kids to Camp Jenny each year!

This year we’re hoping to raise enough money to send six campers.

So, mark your calendars to join us on Saturday night, March 19 at HOTTY’s Annual Camp Jenny Bingo Fundraiser! It’s a fun night for all ages, with dinner, bingo, lots of great prizes, and a live auction. Hope to see you there!

NEW MEMBERS Welcome: The Isenberg Family Please join us in welcoming Dave & Judy Isenberg of Roswell to TBT. Dave had separate careers in National Sales Management and Retail Banking Administration. He enjoys golf, poker and other card games, fitness and grandchildren.

He was a Navy/Marine Field Corpsman in Vietnam.

Judy is a retired Registered Nurse with a career in Healthcare Management and Administration. She enjoys golf, fitness, reading, card games and mahjong.

They have adult children: Jason and Rachel, along with several grandchildren. Some of the Isenbergs are connected to local Jewish life via the Weber School and Camp Barney.

REMEMBRANCE Seventh Grade Takes a Meaning-Filled Field Trip The bus ride was 24 minutes. Then 20. Then 15. Then 10. Then 5. Then we arrived. There was security and a fence around the building, you can guess why, with all the drama in the world right now. Ms. Rhonda, the 7th grade teacher, was the tour guide. The first thing we saw was a book full of one word: Jew. It was printed six million times, showing that one word represented one living person who suffered and died during the Holocaust. Then we walked into a room about how far antisemitism goes back, to the 1400’s. The next room we saw was about Jews and their families, and how everyone had their own lives; they were similar to our everyday lives. There were also real found artifacts from hiding places from where Jews tried to hide from the Nazis. It also showed how over time, Hitler and the Nazis rose to power, and took over Germany. It was very sad. So many young, innocent children, scared, not knowing what to do.

Jewish families had to rely on other families whose last names looked from Jewish ancestry to save them and hide them. And then Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass. Synagogues, exactly like ours, were destroyed and burnt down. Jewish owned stores and shops were broken into. And guess who had to clean it all up? Us. The Jews. And then came the ghettos. They would hide from Nazis, but of course they wanted to continue to have a life - and hope. In the ghettos, Jews could only

have 180 calories a day - that's not even one granola bar. Then came the cattle cars that transported Jews to internment camps. They all got killed from electric fences, gas chambers, gunshots, and getting hung. They tried to fight back. But failed. Soon after the suffering finally started to end and die down, people started to get saved and taken to the US. Where everything was better.

Where everything was safer. I think we all know what happened after that. Think about how good it felt for those Jews that survived and got taken to a new, happy, safe place. No more hiding. No more trying to be quiet so no one could hear you. In the present world, it is better.

No more suffering. The museum was a good thing to see. It was very sad, but I appreciate this museum. I really enjoyed it. Thank you!

SIMCHAS Jakob and Jaysen Metersky will be called to the Torah as a B’nai Mitzvah on March 5, 2022. They are in the 7th grade at Hightower Middle School, where Jakob plays the saxophone in band and Jaysen plays the cello in orchestra. They have both been avid soccer players since they started running, and play with the Roswell Santos Select Team.

For their Mitzvah project they chose to collect new or gently used soccer equipment, for kids in need, supporting “Leveling the Playing Field.”

The Metersky’s would like to thank Rabbi Shuval-Weiner, Cantor Kassel, Amy Peskin, Jay Weiner and all the TBT teachers that have helped them prepare for this day.

They are looking forward to celebrating this joyous day with friends and family!

Lily Mitman will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on March 26, 2022. Lily is in 7th grade at Crabapple Middle School. Lily's hobbies include cheerleading and tennis. She loves hanging out with her friends and playing with her dog, Brody. Lily can't wait to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah with her friends and family.

Alyssa “Aly” Berman will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on March 12, 2022.

Aly is the daughter of Neil and Gigi Berman and little sister to Ben and Blake. She is an 8th grader at Simpson Middle School. She plays the violin in the school orchestra and cheers for the Lassiter Junior Trojans.

Aly loves spending time with her friends, going to Lassiter HS football and basketball games, binge -watching Grey’s Anatomy and going to the beach. Some of Aly’s hobbies are making Tik Tok videos, decorating and interior designing on Roblox.

Aly’s favorite mitzvah project was planting daffodils for the Daffodil Project. She enjoyed getting to meet several Holocaust survivors, and especially enjoyed her conversation with Hershel Greenblat.

Aly and her family would like to thank Rabbi Shuval-Weiner, Cantor Kassel and Rachel Wilson for all their guidance and support. Aly is excited to share this special day with her family and friends.

Ben Kalmin will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on April 9, 2022. Ben is the son of Hydi and Bruce Kalmin, as well as the grandson of Jenny and Norman Kalmin and Jerry and Marilyn (of blessed memory) Dickstein.

He is a 7th grader at Fulton Science Academy in Alpharetta. Ben rows with St. Andrew's Rowing Club and is an accomplished pianist. In his free time, he enjoys reading, cooking, hiking, and playing video games. For his mitzvah project, Ben is combining his love for music and dogs by raising money and collecting items for Bosley's Place, as well as playing calming music to the puppies.

He would like to thank Cantor Kassel, Rabbi Shuval-Weiner, his tutor Rebecca Cheskes, and all the teachers and family who have helped him get to this important day!

SIMCHAS Jacob Addison Malever will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on April 30, 2022. He is the son of Jerred and Debbie Malever and younger brother to Julia. He is the grandson of Barbara Oxenhandler, Ronald and Ginger Oxenhandler, and Brent and Frances Malever.

Jake is in the 7th grade at Hopewell Middle School where he plays on the school tennis and soccer teams and is a member of Junior Beta Club and French Club.

Jake loves playing competitive tennis, watching college football (Roll Tide!), riding his bike and playing with our Golden Retriever. Jake is also excited to be a part of Sandwich Project Atlanta, where he makes and delivers homemade sandwiches for those who are homeless or food insecure. Jake and his family would like to thank his amazing team: Rabbi ShuvalWeiner, Cantor Kassel, his tutors: Jay Weiner and Amy Peskin, and his TBT teachers for preparing him for his Bar Mitzvah.

Lynda and Jon Bennett have much nachas as they announce the birth of another grandchild, Brayden Bobby Bennett, on January 24th. He was 8 pounds 3 ounces and 20 inches long.

Seth Kinoshita is Roswell High School’s Salutatorian. Seth is the son of Kenji and Deidre Kinoshita. His twin brother Josh is also a senior at Roswell High School. He has been dual enrolled at Georgia Tech, where he has taken math courses.

While at Roswell High School, Seth has been in the Chamber Orchestra, on the quiz bowl and cross country teams and in Chemistry Club. Outside of school activities, Kinoshita has been practicing aikido for 14 years, and in May he will test for his first-degree black belt.

He also volunteers with the Sunrise Association of Atlanta, which supports families affected by childhood cancer. He has also held officer positions in HOTTY at TBT. His favorite Roswell High School tradition, he says, are the football games. "I have vivid memories of my freshman, sophomore and senior flour toss."

Seth will likely attend Georgia Tech, Tulane University, Washington University in St. Louis or Johns Hopkins University. He plans to dual major in chemistry and applied mathematics on a pre-med track, and later become a radiation oncologist.

Zoe Rosenberg, daughter of Tony Rosenberg, earned both of scouting’s highest honors. In the Girl Scouts, the highest achievement is the Gold Award. For the Boy Scouts of America, it’s the rank of Eagle. Rosenberg is one of very few to earn both.

Rosenberg had been a Girl Scout since the age of 5 and earned the Gold Award before finishing high school. She became part of BSA in 2019 when girls were first invited to join. She made it to Eagle Scout in less than two years.

Rosenberg is proud to be in what is a pretty exclusive club. She says the achievements were equally tough to attain.

But when you’re driven, nothing can stand in the way.

“I say a lot that I feel like a trailblazer. I got the Eagle Scout because I wanted to do it. But another reason is to show other people that they could do it,” Rosenberg said.

Rosenberg is now a freshman at Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina, studying international relations.

PASSOVER Join Us! Second Night Seder This year, the lens of our Second Night Seder will be Shmita; and our responsibility to and engagement with the earth.

Our sages took some pains to ensure a Jewish calendar in which Pesach would always fall in the spring.

In the northern hemisphere, Pesach is inextricably connected with spring.

As the earth shakes off the constrictions of winter, her frozen places thawing, so we remember our shakingoff the yoke of slavery to Pharaoh. As plant life and trees are “reborn” into the warming air, we tell the story of our renewal and rebirth out of the constriction of slavery and into freedom.

On the Jewish calendar this is a shmita year, a year of Shabbat for the earth. Just as we were freed from slavery and can now embrace holy time every seventh day, so we are called to free the earth from her labors every seventh year. But most of us don’t farm. How might we reinterpret this call?

earth from space, we ushered in an era when we could be newly-aware of our interconnections. Regardless of nationality or creed, we’re all on the same planet.

Ultimately the divisions between “us” and “them” are illusory.

And that’s true not only spiritually, but practically.

If we pollute a river “there,” its impact will eventually be felt “here.”

Maybe this shmita year’s Pesach is an opportunity to rethink how we treat the earth we share. A time to redouble our efforts to clean the air and to avoid sullying the seas.

In the Pesach story, we leave the Narrow Place of slavery — emerge through the waters of the Sea of Reeds — and are born into a new paradigm of relationship with our Source. Can we take Pesach as our inspiration to forge a new paradigm of relationship with our planet, so that the earth too can experience rest and rebirth?

SUPPORT Families Anonymous: For the Family Disease In 2011, after my son went into treatment for an addiction to opiates and being told for a few weeks that I, too, needed help, I walked into the equivalent of a “parents recovery” meeting. I didn’t believe I was sick. I didn’t believe in the concept of a “family disease.” I didn’t believe there was anything wrong with me (unless you count pain, fear, paranoia, headaches and trauma, which I didn’t). But I went because desperation can be a great motivator and I certainly was desperate for answers about what went wrong.

I didn’t find answers, but I eventually found acceptance and comfort, and it began in that first meeting with the realization that I was not alone. A woman told a story about how her son had battled addiction issues for years and she had just found out that her daughter, the “perfect” child, was now also struggling. She sighed and said she was emotionally drained, and then punctuated her remarks with, “I just want a nap.”

And I thought – “That’s it! That’s me!”

That moment seems like such a small thing now. But it was my first connection to a parallel recovery group.

It set me on a journey when I learned

how to work my own program and take care of myself, not my son. It’s completely counterintuitive thinking for a parent because we’re naturally tied to our children emotionally, even when we believe we’re “doing the right thing” for them. My wife and I began to regularly attend Families Anonymous (FA) meetings at Temple Beth Tikvah. I listened to other parents, who shared their experience, strength and hope. I also listened to siblings of those in longterm recovery to learn about their emotions and resentments because I also had a non-addicted child. I learned about previously foreign -- or outright rejected -- concepts like detaching with love, powerlessness and turning things over to a Higher Power. I learned one of the most difficult things of all: Go through daily life with a mindset of gratitude over expectations.

The more I focused on myself and educated myself about the disease of addiction, the better my relationship became with my son because we found a new way to communicate. Strangely, everything in my life improved, from personal relationships to struggles at work to how I processed the struggles of everyday life. I truly believe that despite all of the pain I went through, despite going to sleep many nights not knowing if my son was going to be alive the next morning, his addiction became both the worst and best thing that ever happened to me. It put me on a life-changing

When I wrote about the family’s journey for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2015, we were overwhelmed by the response from tens of thousands of people across the country, many of whom shared a similar story. You can read it here. Families Anonymous is open to all family members and friends of those with drug, alcohol or related behavioral issues. It is based on the 12 Step recovery model of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and was founded in the belief that addiction is a family disease. Just as our loved ones have their “drug of choice,” so do we. Our addiction is centered on codependency, enabling and helping. Once we accept and acknowledge those issues, we begin to accept that “our lives have become unmanageable,” and need to treat ourselves.

SUSTAINABILITY TBT Is Turning Green This year, TBT is taking what will be the first of many deliberate steps towards a greener, cleaner, and more responsible future! This is about our place (reducing the carbon footprint of our temple), and also about our people (all of us, and hopefully all of you too).

To that end, TBT has partnered with Georgia Interfaith Power & Light (GIPL). In their own words, GIPL “engages communities of faith in stewardship of Creation.” The concept of being stewards and caretakers of our land, our community, and of each other is something deeply rooted in our heritage, and we are excited about learning from GIPL’s experts and implementing tangible changes that help honor that responsibility.

Some of the steps we have already taken include replacing all of the lightbulbs in the temple with long lasting, lower power LEDs. We are also beginning our pilot recycling program, and expect to dramatically cut the waste we produce in the coming months.

We have other plans and ideas we can’t wait to show you - like

a raised bed garden to grow our own delicious produce, or perhaps hosting a farmer’s market of local growers right at TBT for all of you! Wouldn’t that be the best way to bring home 27-too-many-eggs for Passover?

If you’re reading all of this and thinking, “That all sounds great, but I don’t know anything about this, and I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do to help,” then trust us, we all are with you. One of the great parts of working with a group like GIPL, is that we have experts (and more importantly, experts who want to teach) helping us expand our knowledge. They have online workshops and classes, recorded how-to’s, and plenty of research and ways to help.

There will be ample opportunity to learn, grow, and teach each other on the way.

Most of all though, as we plan our path forward, with GIPL’s trove of knowledge to help point us in the right direction, we want you all to be a part of it. We want your input, your ideas, your help, and your partnership. When we move as a community, we can shape our future together.

Green Team: March Challenge Georgia Interfaith Power and Light (GIPL) invites TBT to participate in their eco-challenge! This monthly challenge focuses on various environmental topics and encourages individuals to take action. March’s eco-challenge theme is Plant-Forward Diet. Did you know that, on average, Georgians consume about 105 lbs of meat (beef, pork, poultry & fish) each year? More than half of this comes from beef and pork. One way to reduce our carbon footprint is to adopt a plant-forward diet, at least a few meals a week. You can find the eco-challenge here.
