A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SHUVAL-WEINER Truly one of the most exciting parts of the Confirmation curriculum here at Temple Beth Tikvah is our trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the L’Taken Seminar. This year’s class spent the weekend of February 21-24 with Bobbee Griff and me in our nation’s capital singing, learning, praying, debating and touring along with some 450 teens from Reform synagogues from all across the United States. Bus #5, our bus, brought together Confirmation students from Florida, California, Minnesota and Georgia. L’Taken (which means “to repair,” and makes reference to the concept of tikkun olam, “repairing the world” in the Aleiynu prayer) is a program that explores Judaism’s prophetic teachings about social responsibility through the lens of chesed, avahva, busha and kavod. L’Taken provides the opportunity to introduce our students to a compelling model for incorporating their Jewish values into their daily lives.
During the L’Taken Shabbaton, students learn from experts about various issues— ranging from security for Israel, to women’s rights, from campaign finance reform to environmental and economic justice - and all topics for study are based upon Congress’ current legislative agenda. Our students visit the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, take a stroll past many of the institutions that serve as bedrock to our nation’s Democracy on their way to visit the White House and conclude Shabbat with a beautiful candlelight Havdallah service on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial. The weekend culminates on Capitol Hill where students lobby their representatives on the issues that matter to them, putting into practice all they’ve learned. Always a powerful opportunity learning that each one of their voices matter. It is immersive experiences such as these that bring Judaism alive for so many of our students. It is my hope to expand what we are able to make available to the TBT students in the years to come.

ECEC UPDATE—SHERI BAKER & LINDA SIEGEL What can Temple Beth Tikvah’s Early Childhood Education Center offer your family? Our Early Childhood Education center offers our children a priceless opportunity at a Jewish “head start” in school and life. Our curriculum integrates all the values, holidays, traditions, symbols, and mitzvot, along with a solid academic curriculum. The synagogue itself becomes more than a place of worship, and it becomes their second home. Our teachers incorporate secular lessons of colors, numbers, and letters into Jewish themes. We use a multi-sensory approach to learning, where children learn best by using all of their senses. Our teachers offer a caring, loving, and stimulating environment where your child learns at their developmental rate and level. Most importantly, learning at Temple Beth Tikvah’s Early Childhood Education Center goes above and beyond academics. It involves developing character, building relationships with others and with God, and building a positive self-image. For our families, we offer a place where families can worship, learn, pray, and play together. We welcome our families to attend our synagogue’s programming. Whether it is our Sukkot services, Simchat Torah celebrations, Tot Shabbat services, or adult and parent education, we encourage our families in our Early Childhood Education Center to become involved at a level of their comfort. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL UPDATE—SUZANNE HURWITZ I am so excited for the month of March at TBT. Because of the way the dates fall, we have five Sundays of religious school, and most Mondays and Tuesdays to boot. In that time, we will be learning about and celebrating two of my very favorite holidays, Purim and Passover. Purim falls during the month of Adar. When the month begins, we say “Be happy, it’s Adar”, because PURIM IS THAT MUCH FUN! Purim allows us to be silly while we celebrate the Jewish people’s victory over Haman’s murderous plot. We are to perform four mitzvot on Purim, and TBT’s religious school is here to help! One mitzvah is to hear the Book of Esther, which recounts the story of Purim. Our marvelous madrichim have been preparing their Purim play and I cannot wait to see it. It will take place on Sunday, March 8th at 11:30am. Our teens will get to enjoy the Purim Service and Shpiel on Monday, March 9th at 7:00pm. The second mitzvah of Purim is the giving of mishloach manot, or Purim gifts. TBT makes that easy and you should have received an email about it. You don’t want to miss out on letting your friends and co-congregants you are thinking about them! The third mitzvah - that of celebrating with a festive meal - can be accomplished by attending the always-fantastic Purim carnival at noon on March 8th. Finally, giving to the poor is the fourth mitzvah. We collect tzedakah each week to help those less fortunate and the week of Purim is no exception. So, get your costumes ready and fully celebrate Purim with us! I love Passover for its beautiful connection to our past, for its traditions and opportunities to create new ones, and yes, for the food! Passover doesn’t begin until the first week in April, with the first seder being on April 8 th, but we will be prepping for it in advance since we do not have school at that time. We will be learning all about this holiday through food, song, text study, and more. Our ‘mock’ Passover sederim with our classes will give our students the chance to prepare for the sederim that I hope you will enjoy with your families and friends next month. Until then, it’s a great time to be a student in TBT’s religious school with Purim and Passover this month!

RHONDA POVLOT, PRESIDENT: POSITIVE CHANGES IN TBT COMMUNCATION Dear Temple Beth Tikvah Friends and Family, The Staff and Board of Trustees are excited to announce our move to ShulCloud. ShulCloud is a cloud-based software that provides us with a membership and financial management system with an integrated secure website, email distribution and online calendar. Our staff migrated from Chaverware, which was acquired by ShulCloud, at the end of 2019. You may have already noticed some changes such as the reformatted billing statements early this year, our announcement slides on the lobby TV displays or some of the changes to our website. Our next major step with ShulCloud will have even more impact on you, our congregants. Soon we will be sending each of you a personal login to the website. From our website, you will be able to manage your member information, customize your email notices, register for Religious School & Preschool, RSVP and Sign Up for Synagogue Events as well as pay your statements all from your desktop or our mobile app. You can also make donations to specific temple funds as you wish. In addition, you will have access to a member directory so we can join together as a closer Jewish community. Email will be the primary way we will be communicating with our members. If you don't have an email address, please don't worry. We will still send postal mail for those that wish. We hope these new features will help the staff provide you a better, more personalized experience as a member of Temple Beth Tikvah. Also, you will be able to take charge and manage your own information in a secure manner. Soon, you will receive an email in your inbox with a special link to login to the bethtikvah.com website. This link will allow you to access the website and set a password. An email will be sent to each adult member of your family. If you have questions, our staff and volunteers will be available to assist you. For our next communication change, beginning in April our monthly newsletter will be changing. We will be publishing our newsletter in a magazine format every two months. With our new electronic abilities, we can get information to you more quickly. Our newsletter will be for special information. We hope you enjoy the new look. I would like to take this time to express my sincere gratitude to Scott Povlot, Project Manager and Coordinator for the transition to ShulCloud as well as the Communications Committee chaired by Marlene Cohn. I would also like to thank Eric Chanin who spent countless hours reviewing ShulCloud videos and information for the financial transition. Also a big Thank you to Becky Sullivan, Kim Weindorf and Perri Kunofsky for their work with the administrative, website and school transition. This has been a huge project. YOUTH GROUP I have a very vivid memory from high school when one night, being so overwhelmed and stressed out with my homework, I had to stay up until midnight to finish everything. If I told that story to the teens now, they’d laugh…”ONE night? That’s me EVERY night!” The amount of school work and level of expectations that our teens are dealing with is unprecedented and frankly, not healthy. If you have a teen living in your house, you know what I’m talking about. I imagine that, as parents, it’s tough to figure out how to challenge and push your teens, but also encourage them to participate in activities that they enjoy, go out with their friends, to have a life! I came across a great article recently, where the author (a mom of teens) said: “It’s tough to find the balance in teaching our kids to push themselves to reach their potential without burning out or breaking down. We need to start putting our kids’ mental health first, and then teach them how to decide what they can handle. Because if your kid can’t sleep because of stress or starts hurting themselves to cope with anxiety or something worse yet, that “challenging” course they felt they should take or team we pushed them to join or added responsibility they weren't ready for may not be worth it. I absolutely want my kids to challenge themselves, but I hope they learn to care about their well-being more than anything else.” I encourage you to read the full article, which I shared on our HOTTY Facebook page, it’s so well said and such a great message for all of us. If you’re interested in learning more, please come to one of our “Helping to Navigate the Teen Years” sessions on March 2nd and April 27th. I’m encouraged that at our synagogue, we’re listening to our teens and parents and doing what we can to help our teens grow up healthy and happy.

Rosh Chodesh is the celebration of the new moon and the new month, according to the Jewish calendar. Rosh Chodesh has long been recognized as a women’s holiday. In midrash Pirke DeRabbi Elezer, Chapter 45, we are told that in the incident of the Golden Calf, the women refused to relinquish their earnings to the men who were building the idol. As a reward, God gave them an extra holy day each month, free from work.

Friday April 10th : Looking for 4 volunteers to cook and 4 volunteers to serve at The Zaban Shelter (first come, first serve-slots generally fill up quickly) Coming soon : another Drake House shopping event and dinner to follow. Our themes will be based on each Hebrew month and will be explored through discussions, meditations, journaling, connection to nature, arts & crafts and creative ritual.

Garrett Flink will be called to the Torah on March 7, 2020. He is the son of Sheri and Andy Flink. He has 4 brothers, Ryan, Bradley, Jake and Reid, and is the grandson of Janet and Mickey Abrams and the late Paula and Henry Flink.

Garrett is at 7th grader at Crabapple Middle School. He enjoys everything football, video games and his friends and family. He loves all animals, especially his dog Atlas, cats Timmie and Shadow, as well as his nine fish in the two fish tanks in his room. For one of Garrett’s mitzvah projects he collected items from people all over the country to be donated to the Atlanta Humane Society. These generous donations have been used to create the centerpieces for the Kiddush lunch. Garrett’s grandparents will be presenting him with his late uncle Gary Abrams’ tallit. Garrett was named after Gary and will go forth as an adult in the Jewish community honoring his memory with his own beautiful light.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN We are grateful for the generous donations received thus far for the 2019-20 Annual Campaign. THANK YOU !! These funds will be used to continue offering rich programming to all our members and sustain our operations. Our committee members are working hard to connect with our members via phone, e-mail, or in person time permitting. Please help us achieve our $133,000 goal by donating at whatever level is comfortable. Through mid-February, we are at 25% of our membership participating in the campaign, with a goal of 50% and we have raised nearly $85,000 to date. The campaign runs through April, so plenty of time. Our giving opportunities offer something for everyone. In keeping with our mission, our fundraising initiatives focus on several broad categories that support the work we do. Your gift(s) to one or more of these funds is greatly appreciated. General Fund– This goes to where the need is greatest and allows the Temple the most flexibility in directing your contribution dollars.
Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund – Donations are used for charitable giving at the Rabbis’ discretion.
Building Fund- Donations are used to pay down the building debt.
Cantors’ Fund – Donations are used for charitable giving at the Cantor’s discretion.
Annual Giving Campaign – The Annual Fund is a critical source of income to the Kehillat Chesed Fund– These funds are used to support individuals during Temple, helping us make up the difference between revenues from member- times of need such as providing meals of consolation, and other acts of kindship dues and other fees, and our actual operating costs. ness. Temple Beth Tikvah Endowment Fund – The endowment helps to pay down the mortgage, and when completed will help to secure our congregation’s significant program needs and ensure our future financial stability.
Tikkun Olam Fund – The purpose of this fund is to promote and support social justice and community service efforts, particularly those that encourage giving and volunteering in partnership with our synagogue.
Preschool Enrichment Fund – This fund provides for staff development workshops, parent education, enrichment specialists, and special equipment for the preschool.
Campership/Israel Fund– These monies are used to provide scholarships for children to attend summer camp, retreats, study programs or Israel experiences.
Michael Zalkin Memorial Library Fund- Donations are used to purchase books and other library improvements.
Prayer Book Fund– Used to purchase books used for the purpose of conducting a service (Siddurim, Chumashim, Shiva minyan books, etc)
Torah Fund- Donations provide for the maintenance and upkeep of our Torah scrolls and dressings.
Education Scholarship Fund- helps to provide need-based scholarship assistance to families attending Religious education classes at TBT.
