Purim The holiday of Purim is around the corner, and with it comes carnivals, hamantashen and much merriment.

While dressed in colorful costumes we read the megillah, the story of Haman, Ahashverosh, Mordechai, and Esther replete with graggers and other noisemakers.

When we sit in the synagogue and hear the megillah, we see our redemption become a reality and we celebrate the outcome with shouts of joy and a loud celebration.

L’yehudim haytah orah v’simcha v’sasoon vi’ikar (8:16) And still the narrative is calling out to us to go deeper than just experiencing a story. It is summoning us to a challenge- to see ourselves wearing the masks of each one of these biblical characters, asking probing questions, revealing what might be hidden deep inside our own hearts: When am I so wrapped up in my own ego and vanity that I am unable to see what is taking place all around me?

(Ahashverosh) Do I ever generalize feelings about an individual to an entire people? (Haman) Am I ever too afraid to reveal my true self? Is my own comfort the primary purpose of my existence? What is holding me back from giving voice to what I know is important? (Esther) When must I help another reach their potential by discomforting them? (Mordechai) How is God revealing God’s self to me in my life through the choices that I make?

Because of the nature of the celebration, we often turn this holiday over to the children, when in reality it deals with very adult psychological themes, such as prejudice, courage, human destiny, hiddenness and revelation.

Asking us to consider the masks we wear, who we are underneath the masks, and under what conditions will we reveal our true selves and for what will we stand?

In considering the narrative, we are asked to read deeply.

Hidden in the word megillah is the root g-l-h that means “to reveal”. The rabbis’ suggest that Megillat Esther could be called the book of Revealing of the Hidden. From the very beginning of the story things are veiled: Vashti is a wonderful example of one for whom popularity and position were less important than her dignity as a human being, so she refuses to reveal her beauty “to the peoples and the officials.” (1:11- 12)

Purim brings with it the profound opportunity to let down our defenses and reveal what is hidden within us, giving us the ability to strip away that which is so easy to ignore, and free ourselves to grow and become better human beings. So this year, on this Purim holiday, let us embrace the gift and make the Story of Esther our own personal story of revelation and salvation, a story that can help to enrich our souls in ways we never thought possible. Hag Purim Sameach!

Queen Esther had two names, Hadassah- her Jewish name and Esther her Persian one. Esther’s name comes from the Hebrew root s-t-r meaning hidden. Of course, we all know that a key element of the plot is that “Esther did not reveal her [true name], her people or her kindred, for Mordechai had told her not to reveal it.” (2:10)

There are four Mitzvot associated with the holiday, to help us increase our joy:

King Ahashverosh does not know that Haman so hates Mordechai that he plans the destruction of all of the Jewish people. (3:10)

Giving tzedakah to those in need (Matanot L’Evyonim) Giving food gifts to friends! (Mishloah Manot).

After a close reading one might notice that God seems to be absent in this narrative? In fact, Megillat Esther is the only biblical story where the name of God does not inherently appear. In our prayer book Mishkan Tefilah we read Pray

as if everything depends upon God. Act as if everything depends upon you. Yet one is left to wonder if perhaps God is indeed acting behind the scenes—hidden.

Mordecai asks Esther a question we should all ask ourselves: “Who knows if you have not come to your position for just such a time as this?” (4:14). And of course, the King loves Esther so deeply that he pledges to grant any request, but she postpones revealing to him her secret until the time is right. (5:3-4 & 7:4) When Esther finally gathers the courage and/or confidence to risk everything and reveal who she truly is--Hadassah-- the Jewish woman- and that Haman has plotted to destroy her people, and by extension Ahashverosh’s queen. It is only then that salvation is at hand, and in that moment of audacious chutzpah, God’s power seems to be revealed.

A MEL BROOKS PURIM! Saturday, March 11th, 7:30 PM

ADULTS ONLY EVENING Honestly – I can’t believe that Mel Brooks HASN’T created his own Purim Shpiel, so WE’VE done it for you (thanks to our own JON MARKS)!

Here is just some of what you’ll be hearing: “Mesopotamia Mania” (Young Frankenstein) depicts the state of Shushan!

Vashti sings: “I’m Tired” (Blazing Saddles) after the King makes more demands.

Esther and Mordecai sing: “You’ve Got It; Flaunt It” (The Producers) “Blazing Kippot” (a song about Mordecai - from “Blazing Saddles”) “Puttin’ On The Ritz” becomes the King’s solo: “I Am Such A Ditz” Esther channels Mel Brooks “High Anxiety” with her own “My Anxiety” Haman’s going to produce a show: “I’m Gonna Be A Producer” And the show it aptly named “Springtime for Haman”

This is a not-to-be missed evening.

We’re told that Mel Brooks might even show up!

Director of Congregational Learning Search Committee Update The Director of Congregational Learning will be something new and exciting for our community. We will have an overarching focus of education and learning from our youngest of newborns to our wisest of 125. Our Director of Congregational Learning will prepare Educational programming and direction for our ECEC, Religious School, Post B'nai Mitzvah, Adult Ed, and so on.

After the two town hall meetings last summer, Mary Block, Board of Ed Chair, Rhonda Povlot, Search Committee Chair, and Rabbi Shuval-Weiner took all of your valuable and thoughtful feedback and submitted an application to the ARJE, Association of Reform Jewish Educators. We also submitted an application to the Reconstructionist movement as well as the Conservative movement.

We have received many applications, held phone, Skype, and in person interviews and visits to our community. We have narrowed down the field.

We have a thoughtful and experienced committee working diligently to make the best choice for our congregation. Thank you to Lori Shapiro, Deidra Kinoshita, Mark Hirsch, Susan Shields, Kathy Levin, Meredith Hegarty, Rob Rickles, Brian Rubenstein, and Rhonda Povlot.

We look forward to announcing our new Director of Congregational Learning very soon.

Religious School Religious school has had a wonderful month. We have been very busy with numerous exciting activities.

January 20th was a wonderful Shabbat as our 5th and 6th grade students participated in the service.

On February 3rd our 3rd and 4th grade students hosted their graded Shabbat. Each class was tasked with presenting their version of what the prayer/topic meant to them. The students were very creative in their interpretations.

I have listened to our 4th and 5th grade students read their Hebrew prayers on several occasions. It was a great success. It looks like everyone will be able to participate in the ice cream party on March 19th. I am so impressed with our students and their accomplishments.

On Tu B’Shevat we celebrate the new year for the trees. As the month of Shevat begins in Israel, the rainy season is on its way out, the land warms up and it is the time to plant. It is so important that we acknowledge this meaningful day, rejoicing in the beauty of nature and the growth of the tree.

Every year at Temple Beth Tikvah we celebrate by eating many fruits and nuts. This year our Tu B’Shevat program was lead by Reut Noyman of Jewish Peoplehood Education Center in Israel. Some of the activities our students participated in were: art projects, story telling, planting seeds, playing games and having a Tu B’Shevat Seder. It was a wonderful day of celebration for all our students.

Tu B’Shevat is a less acknowledged holiday outside of Israel so to bring it to our students is very important and rewarding for us all.

For over a decade 7th graders at TBT have explored the similarities between anti-Semitism and homophobia through interactive activities, multi-media, and discussion. Unfortunately, middle schoolers still use derogatory words to insult others. On average, they hear these insulting words up to 25 times per day. SOJOURN executive director, Rebecca Stapel-Wax, spoke about how standing up for oneself and others is grounded in Torah and how to "up your allyship" by teaching skills to speak out against anti-Semitism, homophobia, bullying, transphobia, and all forms of oppression. It was a very engaging class with a lot of discussion.

Confirmation letters for 2019 Bat/Bat Mitzvah dates have been mailed. If your child is eligible for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah in 2019 and you have not received the date selection information from the school office, please call as soon as possible so we can be sure your child has a date set aside for him/her.

Youth Group HOTTY (9-12th Grade) Do you feel like your kids aren’t close with their Sunday School classmates? Not as involved in TBT as you want them to be? Read on for what Anna Wynne, a freshman, has to say about it…

‘Hi! My name is Anna Wynne and I am a freshmen in HOTTY. Last spring when I got "kidnapped" into HOTTY, I wasn't really sure what to expect considering I hadn’t really bonded with kids at Sunday School. But as soon as I got there, I realized that didn't matter. Everyone, and I mean every single person, in HOTTY is so welcoming. I've gotten to know some of the older kids and even gotten close with other freshmen that I didn't really know through my years of religious school. Throughout this year, I've gone to multiple events, including regional NFTY events, and I’ve never felt more at home. I was very hesitant to join HOTTY, as I had never been very active at the temple, but the decision to join the youth group was definitely the right one.”

TBT Younger Youth Groups We had a great turnout for our first Bonim event ever at X-drenaline! We spent the afternoon jumping on trampolines, rock climbing, and of course mastering the Ninja Course! It was a blast!

This month is also NFTY-SAR’s Hatikvah Kallah. The weekend convention just for 6-8th graders. The theme is the movie “Inside Out.” We can’t wait for the weekend to finally be here. Stay tuned for pictures on the TBT Youth Facebook Page and in next month’s newsletter.

On March 18th the temple youth group, HOTTY, is hosting a bingo night in order to raise money for Camp Jenny. Camp Jenny is a camp run by Reform Jewish teens that sends children from inner city Atlanta, who normally would not be able to go to camp, to camp. The children who go to Camp Jenny work all year to make improvements in their effort at school and their attitude in order to spend their Memorial Day weekend at camp. The overall goal is to raise $75,000 in order to pay for each camper to be able to have everything they need over the weekend and to have program supplies.

HOTTY wants to help raise money by having a Bingo Night open to the whole temple! If Gesher Chocolate Party you want to win prizes,- and have fun, then this bingo night is perfect for you!

The local police accused the Mossad and released security-camera footage showing supposed Israeli agents caught on tape in the preparation and execution of the murder, immediately making headlines all over the world. But no one was as shocked as the Mossad itself."

April 1st - Arranged- This is about two young friends who are teachers in Brooklyn. Rochel (an Orthodox Jew) and Nasira (a Syrian-

descent Muslim) are each going through the arranged marriage process. Each character must find her own path in her respective religion and in her quest to get married. The movie has some hilarious moments.

Hebrew Prayer & Torah Chanting Boot Camp – Cantor Kassel Sundays 11:00; 3/5, 3/26

Eight part course: We will brush up on some of the basic prayers in our service as well as discuss and practice some of the different melodies used. You will also gain a better understanding of the structure of our Shabbat services and the meaning of our prayers. In addition , the Cantor will teach the basics of Torah Cantillation.

A Partnership for Developing Strong Jewish Values “outsourced” to TBT. Parents need to reinforce the importance they say they place on Jewish identity/values through the dozens of everyday decisions they make about how they spend their time, energy and money. With every such decision you send a message to your child about what really matters to you.

To some degree I feel that I’m speaking to the choir. For example, I know that many of you not only have a Friday night family Shabbat ritual at home but you also use it as a time to talk about things each person is grateful for or lessons learned during the week (and why that’s a Jewish thing to do). Many of you regularly read PJ Library books to your children or play Jewish songs in the car. Others involve their children in family tzedakah decisions to both Jewish and non-Jewish institutions, and connect those decisions to what Torah says are our obligations. Acts of kindness are applauded and instances of ‘missing the mark’ are used as teachable moments through a Jewish lens.

Even the upcoming holiday of Purim can be used to discuss Jewish survival and why that’s important to you.

When presented with the question “How will you measure your life?” many of us tend to give an answer that, at least in part, has something to do with raising confident and selfsufficient kids with strong values. We all have our own strategies around how to accomplish that. But even before we plot our ‘how-to’ strategies, we must first grapple with the question of what are the values that we want our kids to use as their touchstones? This requires some intentionality on our part.

We may quickly gravitate to desired values such as kindness, helping the needy, and self-improvement. Why pick those? “Well, they’re pretty universal” you might say.

What makes them universal? I would argue that our sacred texts and Jewish heritage made them universal since these were instrumental to the development of Christianity and Islam. So if we want to transmit values that have strong Jewish roots, why not go further and be explicit about their Jewish origins and their applicability to our lives today? By doing so we can potentially get a 2-for-1 deal: developing a son or daughter who is a real mensch while also developing their strong and proud Jewish identity.

We are always looking for new ways to help the partnership of TBT and our parents/grandparents be even more impactful in growing and strengthening Jewish values in our children. If there is a tool or a class or an experience that you think TBT should offer to help you or your child, don’t hesitate to let me know.

Accomplishing these two objectives requires a partnership between parents and TBT. Both need to work collaboratively to design experiences which cause the child to absorb the desired values while developing relationships, being challenged, and learning from both success and failure. TBT will do its part through Religious School, Youth Group, camps, etc. However, the job of instilling and strengthening Jewish values cannot simply be

Greetings from Sisterhood!

Greetings from Sisterhood! As we look toward Spring the calendar shows a variety of events this month.

Hamentaschen baking will be held Wednesday, March 8th, 7p.m. – 9 p.m. and Thursday, March 9th, 10 a.m.

– 12 p.m. We will be donating our goodies to the Purim carnival so please come and bake with us.

Knit and Nosh will be meeting Sunday, March 19th at 9:45 a.m. Please remember to bring yarn, a crotchet hook or knitting needles and we will teach you how to craft a lovely scarf, blanket square, or “Mommy Love Squares.” Our committee meeting will follow @ 11 a.m. so please stay and participate!

Pinot and Painting will be hosted by Sisterhood Thursday, March 23rd at 7 p.m. All painting supplies will be supplied; we just need your creative talents! Please join us for a fun and unique evening with our TBT sponsored artist in residence, Mordechai Rosenstein. This will surely be an evening to remember!

Our next Mah Jongg morning will be Sunday, March 26th, at 9:45 a.m. at TBT. Beginners, medium and advanced players welcome.

We teach so join the fun and comradery on these mornings.

Sisterhood’s Women’s Passover Seder is Thursday, March 30th at 7 p.m. in the Social Hall. Please join us as we delight in tasty treat recipes from our very own Passover cookbook and read from a wonderful haggadah for this very significant holiday. Our Rabbi and Cantor will be leading this participatory evening. Our original Passover cookbook will be available for purchase that night…. Yumm!

Many thanks go to Alicia Sher for presenting a great financial planning educational seminar on February 5th. The information was imparted so clearly and creatively which really held our interest in this most important topic. Thank you to Terry Carasick for continuing to lead Knit and Nosh while inspiring us to create blankets, scarves and infant squares. Once again thank you to Kara Segal for teaching at our Mah Jongg sessions.
