We are counseled by voices that guide us even when we are too embittered to hear. We are supported by hands that uplift us even in the midst of a fall. We are urged on by eyes that meet us even when we are too weak for meeting. We are loved by an unending love. This is what we do for each other, and our kehillat chesed committee is behind caring for the varied souls in our congregational family. The goal of this holy work is that no one should ever feel alone, and everyone should know that they matter in our congregational family. Thus when someone is in need, volunteers rush to lend a hand. Some deliver homecooked meals to congregants who are ill or who’ve had a new baby; others arrange for a meal of consolation after a death or guard the home during a funeral. If staying in a hospital is required, a friendly face will appear delivering a bag of goodies.
Jewish tradition challenges us to the mitzvah of chesed, acts of loving kindness. It is how we both emulate the Divine presence, and support each other. We the people of Temple Beth Tikvah are a Kehillah Kedosha - a sacred community and it is through our relationships with one another that we demonstrate our love and concern for one another. Our kehillat chesed committee works tirelessly behind the scenes bringing comfort, assistance and celebration to the membership of our sacred community.
From cards to cooking, many hands are there to hold us up, all bringing a message of love and kindness. We are so grateful for every one of these open-hearted volunteers. For information about joining this incredible group of mitzvah doers, please contact Rabbi Shuval-Weiner or Leslie Swichkow.

Featuring a Purim Shpiel created by our very own Jon Marks! Presented by many talented TBT participants. NEED I SAY MORE?
NEED I SAY MORE? Religious School On February 7th, the sixth grade class and their parents examined why one becomes B’nai Mitzvah- and how it is more than as Tevya would say “ tradition!” According to the Talmud parents are required to teach their children Torah, a trade, and to swim. We discussed how "Torah" is so much more than a series of biblical books; it refers to the whole of moral and ethical learning available to us. Each student created an individualized Torah yad, to “guide” them on their path. We concluded the day with every adult explaining to their child what Torah, and Judaism, means to them, as they physically placed into their arms the Torah scroll that s/he will read from on the day they become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. PreK, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade families enjoyed a delicious potluck dinner prior to their graded Shabbat. It was so great to see so many families participate. A very special thanks to the room parents: Lindsay Levin, Paulabeth Weinberger, Traci Hartog, Jill Leitman, Jodi Craine, Marlene Cohn and Lisa Garris for organizing such a great night.
one of us is capable of building our world with chesed, with love. The group ended the morning by making winter hats to be distributed to the homeless in downtown Atlanta. It has been such a pleasure testing our 4th and 5th grade students. I had a line out the door of students wanting to be tested. There were a lot of happy faces after the kids read to me. It is so wonderful that the kids all tested so well. Kudos to the teachers and aides. The 7th grade students went on a field trip to the William Breman Jewish Heritage & Holocaust Museum. As always it was a very moving day for the group. Here is a quote from Wendy Klein, one of the parent chaperones: “Incredibly moving morning chaperoning the Temple Beth Tikvah 7th graders as they heard from wonderfully knowledgeable docents. They also got to hear from a survivor who recounted incredible stories from her childhood in occupied France. She told of the heroic and brave actions of a number of French villagers who, in conjunction with a few well timed miracles, were instrumental in assuring the survival of a family of 5. Such a meaningful experience!” Our 10th grade students are getting ready for their Confirmation trip to Washington, DC. The trip is sponsored by the Religious Action Center (RAC) of Reform Judaism. The students will spend 4 days in DC attending a conference. The RAC educates and mobilizes teens, clergy, and everyone in between. In all, they advocate for public policy that reflects the Jewish commitment to social justice. The students will have an amazing time in DC.
The Mussar master Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe z”l taught that it is through each act of chesed that we create and build the world. On Sunday January 24th, the students in 4th and 5th grade and their families learned Shalom, about this Jewish value of Chesed (loving kindness). Through song, Hassia Levin prayer, discussion and story we engaged with this idea of how each 3

B’nai Mitzvah Daphne Anne Sausmer will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on March 5, 2016. Daphne is the daughter of Jay Sausmer and Ginger Szekes, and big sister to Jacob and Adam Sausmer. Daphne is the granddaughter of Margie Stern, and Donna and Richard King. She is in the 7th grade at Crabapple Middle School, where she plays violin in the orchestra. Daphne also enjoys dancing, soccer and tumbling. Daphne looks forward to celebrating with her family and friends. Noah Frank will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on March 5, 2016. Noah is the son of Gail and Stephan Frank and younger brother to Liam Frank. He is the grandson of the late Margaret Ann and Stanford Shulman and Barbara and Gary Frank. Noah is in the 7 th grade at Elkins Point Middle School where he enjoys playing the viola in the school’s Chamber Orchestra and is an honor roll student. His hobbies include travelling, hiking, collecting National Park stamps, and spending time with family. Noah chose Mitzvah projects incorporating what was important to him such as helping to clean a National Park in our own backyard, the Chattahoochee River. Noah especially enjoyed those Mitzvah projects where he was able to participate together with family including visiting Jewish patients in the hospital and studying Torah with his Zayde as well as building a Sukkah with his Uncle Michael. Adam Klein will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on March 12, 2016. Adam Klein is a 7th grader at Northwestern Middle School. He has a great appreciation for music, having played piano since he was three years old. Currently, his favorite songs to play are Fly Me to the Moon and Georgia. Adam has an avid interest in Parkour and has been taking classes at Southern Elite Gymnastics for several years. He loves to practice flips on the trampoline. Adam has a knack for solving puzzles, has a great sense of humor and is a wonderful conversationalist. He also likes to challenge family and friends to pitch, progressive rummy and other card games. With Adam’s sister Chana having celebrated her Bat Mitzvah in 2007 and his sister Remi having celebrated her Bat Mitzvah in 2012, Adam has had plenty of coaching and encouragement. His entire family is very proud of him. Aubrey Belle Steinberg will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on March 26, 2016. Aubrey is the daughter of Brian and Jennifer Steinberg and sister to Ethan and Owen. She is in the 7th grade at Hightower Trail Middle School, and participates in Family Promise, National Charity League, Pope Jr. Lacrosse and Stingray AllStars Competitive Cheer. She loves to be silly with her friends, wakeboard, dance, and Snapchat.
Jake Brendan Hegarty will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on March 26, 2016. Jake is the son of Meredith Hegarty and Paul Hegarty and brother to Aidan Hegarty. He is the grandson of Roni Adelman, Patricia Hegarty, Peter Hegarty and the late Michael Adelman. Jake is in 7 th grade at Holcomb Bridge Middle school. He enjoys mountain biking both in his free time and with the NITRO High School team. Jake plays ALTA Tennis and participates in his summer neighborhood swim team. Jake looks forward to each summer when he attends Camp Barney Medintz - his summer place. As part of Jake’s 13 mitzvot project, he is conducting a backpack drive to support Camp Jenny. Camp Jenny is a URJ project held at Camp Coleman each year as an opportunity for underprivileged kids to enjoy the benefits of the camp experience. Jake is excited and proud to share this special day with his family and friends.

Reflections on My 1st Year in HOTTY (Parker Salinas):

So wow, first year in HOTTY and I almost have no words that could exactly depict my experience so far. From the 8th grade rush to my now 3rd NFTY Kallah, every person I have met and every event I have attended continues to amaze me and grow my friendships with the members of HOTTY and me personally. I don’t think that I have ever experienced as close a relationship as I have with everyone at temple. Every time I walk through those doors, I am enveloped in a hug from someone and it makes me feel such an amazing sense of family. I have no way to determine which of the events has been my favorite because each of them has been so special. Whether I talked to someone I had never talked to before or if I tried something I had never thought I’d do, each event and person adds a new piece to who I am growing to be. The one thing I would love to express to all the 8th graders is to not be afraid! Don’t be afraid to try something out of your comfort zone and certainly don’t be afraid to talk to the upperclassmen. We were all in your shoes at one point, looking up at these 10th and 11th graders who seemed so intimidating, but we are all students, jokesters, and normal people, no different than you. I remember looking at the now 10th graders, who are only a year older than me, and being like “they are so scary! How am I ever going to talk to them?” But I promise you that once you give them a chance, you will find some of your best friends, ones that support you and accept you for all your craziness! HOTTY is my closest band of friends and I wouldn’t trade my experiences with them for anything!
5th & 6th Grade: Our Club 56’ers will participate in a Mad Scientist event on Saturday night, March 19th, from 5-7pm. We’ll eat dinner and then cook up some crazy experiments, led by our very own Mad Scientist! NFTY-SAR WINTER KALLAH
Junior Youth Group (7-8th Grade) Thanks to all the JYG’ers who came out on February 7th to give back to our community! We packed toiletry bags for North Fulton Community Charities to help families who are on the brink of homelessness. We celebrated by having a sweet treat at Sweet! Roswell on Canton St. This month our JYG’ers (and 6th graders!) are headed to Temple Kol Emeth for NFTY-SAR’s Hatikvah Kallah! “Wait, was that even English?” Let’s translate! NFTY – The North American Federation of Temple Youth (the youth arm of the Union for Reform Judaism) SAR – The Southern Area Region (which we belong to) - Georgia, South Carolina, Montgomery, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Charlotte, and Chattanooga Kallah – A Kallah is a convention, a gathering of youth from around our region for a weekend of teen-created educational, spiritual, and of course social activities. At a Kallah teens worship together, learn from interesting and exciting programs, participate in a social action project, and of course have tons of fun. Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are It’s been a long winter for all of us. I think many of us are starting to get a bit of spring fever and all that it brings - head colds and that lovely green pollen that will soon be everywhere. Our community is ready to burst with tons of events and celebrations. On March 6 th, we will hold our second annual Sy Davis Memorial Blood Drive. Under the guidance of Renee Davis and Terry Stein, we hope to exceed last year’s donation of 89 pints. Could there be a better way to celebrate the world around us springing back to life than by giving the gift of life to someone? March 12th brings a fabulous Art Auction and Social to TBT, chaired by my wife, Leslie. It promises to be a fun way to spend an evening with your friends and maybe even raise some much needed funds for the TBT Annual Campaign. There will be food and wine, music and schmoozing, along with art from our members and a fun auction of some well-known works and cool sports and rock ‘n roll memorabilia.

And if that’s not enough for you, we will have our creative and meaningful Megillah reading and Purim Shpiel on Wednesday, March 23rd. There will be a lot of surprises in store for all. You should have received a letter from the synagogue last month inviting you to participate in the mitzvah of Mishloch Manot. What a great way to acknowledge the friends you have at TBT and help the synagogue financially at the same time. Hurry, as the deadline is fast approaching. All of these happenings are in addition to our regular worship, education, and social events which are too numerous to mention. There is definitely something for everyone.
Just one week later, on March 19, our Men’s club, chaired by Peter Hartog and Mark Greenspan will host the 2nd annual Bourbon & BBQ. The event is open to men and women and trust me when I say you will have a great time, as I did last year. This BBQ is the best ever and our own chef Mark Mosbacher makes the yummy side dishes. Did I mention March was busy? As soon as the bourbon has been drunk and the grill has cooled off, we will begin setup for our legendary Purim Carnival that will be held Sunday March 20 th after Sunday School. Beth Janes and her band of merry volunteers have been hard at work. We are batting 0 for 2 the last couple of years with the weather so we hope to take this carnival (literally) to new heights
I would be remiss if I did not mention that while the congregation is out enjoying themselves with all these events and celebrations, your Board of Trustees are locked in a room working hard on our 20162017 budget under the guidance of the group that is usually the life of any party, the accountants and financial minds of the budget and finance committee. Seriously, one of our biggest challenges has been our budget. I know I sound like a broken record (do you remember those?). In a perfect world, we would not have to place so much reliance on our Annual Campaign but the facts are what they are. If you haven’t had a chance to make your annual campaign pledge yet, please consider doing so as soon as possible. There are so many things your Board and clergy wants to do for TBT, we just need to be able to financially support these programming initiatives and upgrades to our aging facilities. I look forward to seeing many of you at these events. Let’s all put winter behind us and enjoy the weather while we spend time with each other and all of our TBT community.

We hosted our monthly Knit and Nosh and played Mah Jongg as well. A heartfelt thank you shouts out to Terry Carasick for spearheading Knit and Nosh, our ongoing tikkun olam project, and to Kara Segal for bringing great nosh! Mah Jongg has been so successful and a big thank you is in order for Elisa Siegel, a great teacher indeed! Our Sisterhood members also volunteered at the William Breman Jewish Home Bingo Night and were hosts to the residents enjoying one of their favorite games. Thanks abound to Ilene Monat and Kara Segal for spearheading this great evening. Finally, one of our very own, Alicia Sher, presented a very educational program entitled “Financial Planning Know How.” Alicia did a great job explaining the ins and outs of financial planning and increased our knowledge base on this very important matter. Thank you Alicia! For March, Sisterhood looks forward to hosting Knit and Nosh (3/13/16), Hamentashen Baking (3/16/16), the Rabbi’s Book Review (3/17/16), helping at the Purim Carnival (3/20/16), and Mah Jongg (3/27/16). Adult Ed Introduction to Islam

In a time when misinformation about and misunderstandings of Islam and of the American Muslim community are widespread, The Roswell Community Masjid's goal for this class is to provide TBT with accurate answers to understandable questions. The goal is to share and reflect widely-shared views among American Muslims on important topics such as women's' rights, sharia, jihad, the role of mosques and more. In providing this dialogue, they seek to uphold our shared commitment to religious freedom and contribute to a climate of understanding and mutual respect among Americans of all faiths and none. We will be having a 3 part course on how to research your family's genealogy. The first session, Sunday, March 27th, will be in the form of advising how to go about researching. The two subsequent sessions (April 3rd and 10th) will be hands-on sessions to help you do your research with the help of knowledgeable experts. More detailed information will be found on the TBT website.
TBT Programming - In our efforts to attract your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, we ask that you please advise them that we want to have some programs they would enjoy. These could include lectures, book reviews, sporting events, movies, plays, concerts, etc. We are aiming for the college graduate age, young adults through the 30-somethings (approximately 22-40 year olds), to have programs at TBT or elsewhere (bowling? Painting? Laser Tag? etc.). Please ask the to send ideas to iviegraiser@yahoo.com (or 678-644-1311) so that we may start planning for and having some programs that they specifically would be interested in attending. This will be “driven” by them and may include all or parts of this age group, depending on what they want and who wants to participate.

Shalom TBT!! I'm excited to report that our Annual Campaign has continued to inch towards our planned goals but we still have a ways to go. Thanks to the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation match ($25,000) and our Anonymous donor match ($8500 of $10,000) our totals have grown to over 98,000. While the list of contributors from our congregation continues to grow (see the list below), it falls far short of having even 50% of our family participate. Our goal since day one is to have as many TBT families participate. Financial support comes in many sizes but the significance of having ALL TBT families participate in the Annual Campaign is that these donations benefit all of us and help TBT build for the future. If you are reading my note, that means you care. Please, join the rest of us who have already pledged and give with your heart.
