Guns, Faith and Houses of Worship individuals, whether they have a permit to carry a firearm or not, to bring a firearm into a house of worship. The law will now permit congregations to OPT IN and permit people to bring weapons onto their property, if they choose to. Our synagogue’s Board responded to a thoughtful plea by our own Mark Mosbacher and resolved to make TBT a weapons-free zone in our building and on our grounds. Why did we (along with Temple Sinai and The Temple, the Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta and the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta) pass resolutions when the law hasn’t changed in terms of bringing weapons into houses of worship? One reason is to affirm our truth – bringing weapons into our sacred space, whether it is the sanctuary, the school or the social hall, diminishes that very same sacredness as illustrated in the beginning of this article. A second reason is to have an opportunity to educate how the interfaith religious leadership in Atlanta is predominantly opposed to bringing weapons into houses of worship and we are opposed to legal changes that will uproot reasonable gun ownership and carry regulations. I have joined over 280 other members of the clergy in the Interfaith Coalition against Gun Violence to do what we can to provide a faithful response to these issues. And a third reason: Leviticus 19:16 teaches that we must not stand idly by the blood of our neighbor. This is a pro-active position that communicates to our faith community, the larger Atlanta faith community, and our government leaders that gun violence is a serious issue that needs serious solutions. We fully expect that the issue will reappear in next year’s legislative session to advance that congregations will need to OPT OUT rather than opt in if they want to be weaponsfree. (We also expect them to return to raising legalization of carrying weapons on college campuses). This isn’t about the right to own or carry a weapon. This is about having our synagogue remain a sanctuary from the plowshares and the storms outside. For me, it is also about my concern about the easy access and prevalence of guns that will raise new challenges to issues of public safety. And it is a statement that we see every life as precious. Kol Hakavod to our Board of Trustees for passing this resolution: WHEREAS, in keeping with the spirit of Isaiah 2:4 " And he shall judge between the nations and reprove many peoples, and they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift the sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.”; AND WHEREAS, reflecting that Temple Beth Tikvah is a house of God and a house of hope, THEREFORE, with the exception of active military and law enforcement personnel, Temple Beth Tikvah shall be declared a weapons-free zone; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this be actively communicated to the congregation and to law enforcement. --Resolved April 17, 2014
Commandment 184 is that [God] commanded us to remove obstacles and danger from all dwellings.... – Maimonides’ Sefer HaMitzvot, Positive Commandment #184 (12th century) King David is a central figure in our Jewish Tradition. Held in highest esteem by God, David (whose name means “beloved”) is a warrior who, at times, functions in ruthless ways. And yet, he is devoted to the Covenant between God and the Jewish People and is rewarded for doing so. I have always found it inspiring that such a leader like David, who is held in such high regard, could not build the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. It was his leadership that united the kingdom when he conquered Jerusalem to make it the capital of the Jewish People, and still he could not build the Holy Temple because as a warrior, he had blood on his hands. Not only that, our Holy Temple could not be built with iron. Jewish tradition teaches that the people used other methods to carve out the massive stones. Iron couldn’t be used because that material was often used to shorten another person’s life; thus inconsistent with the sanctity of the Holy Temple. (See Deut. 27:5, M. Middot 3:4). There is even a custom in Jewish families to cover up the knives when we say our Shabbat blessings around the dinner table. Since our table is considered a mikdash m’at—a miniature altar (referring to the ancient Temple) – it is a sacred place and a place of peace. So we cover the knives that represent weapons and bloodshed – imagery that has no appropriate place in the midst of our Sabbath blessings. And so it is… this is why I have been earnest in speaking out against what I consider to be the idolatry of guns in our society. We can debate the intentions of our founding fathers with regard to the Second Amendment. That is for a different time. As a people of faith, we are commanded “to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” (Exodus 19.6) As I reflect on these words, it teaches me that we are to not simply go an extra mile. We are asked by God to choose a path that will model holiness. So we must balance our necessary requirements of security with holiness. From my point of view, it is a holy act to provide hospitality, and thus security, for those who come into your house. That is an important reason why we have our friends from the Roswell Police Department with us regularly and routinely. The chair of our Security Committee is a Police Detective. We take safety and security seriously. And it is with these two values combined – security and holiness – to guide us, that I can say I am proud of our leadership to make Temple Beth Tikvah a weapons-free zone, with the exception of those who are law enforcement professionals or on active duty in the military. The recent law that the Georgia Legislature passed and which Governor Deal signed into law, says that houses of worship are to be considered private property. The law does not permit 2

Notes from Cantor Kassel The past few months have flown by and I look forward to catching my breath during the summer months. I am excited to be attending the American Conference of Cantor’s convention held this year in Israel! It is a full itinerary and I look forward to sharing my experiences with you upon my return. Not a day goes by when I do not think of all the recent activities at our synagogue and the changing path ahead. Please know that I am sincere in my optimism for our future. Recently, a few folks have referred to me as “the rock” of the synagogue. I think it is meant to be flattering and suggestive of the number of years I’ve been at TBT and the transitions I’ve experienced here. To be sure – there are many ‘rocks’ of Temple Beth Tikvah, among whom I am happy to be counted! Like you (I assume) I am always on the lookout for inspiring people, places and events. In the past twenty-four hours I have found two. Yesterday I ran into TBT’s most senior member (age 100) who was at the JCC to hear a lecture. This person is always pleasant, always conversational, and always interested in what’s going on. Then, this morning, I read a heart-felt paper from a soon-to-be convert to Judaism about the process of choosing Judaism. I wish a collection of these papers could be published or somehow shared with you. So many things we take for granted in our religion, are cherished by those who are choosing to become Jewish. May we all be receptive to the sources of inspiration that exist all around us especially as we enter into these slower summer months. Shalom,
Cantor Nancy Kassel

News & Happenings from Temple Beth Tikvah
Summer is Here, Do You Know What Your Children Will be Doing? Our long-awaited summer is finally here and all parents reading this message have undoubtedly deliberated how to best keep their children engaged and entertained while school is out. There may be travel, swim team, and summer play dates on your kids’ calendars. There are many great options available, but I urge you to consider a Jewish summer camp experience for your child. Research shows that Jewish camping has a strong positive effect on our kids’ connection to Judaism. Here are some amazing statistics shared by the URJ: Jewish camps build Jewish identity. As adults, campers are: 10% more likely to marry a Jewish partner. 21% more likely to feel that being Jewish is very important. 37% more likely to light candles regularly for Shabbat. 55% more likely to feel very emotionally attached to Israel.
-BIMA at Brandeis University (www.brandeis.edu/highschool/bima): Waltham, MA for High School Students. -Camp Ramah Darom (www.ramahdarom.org) Clayton, GA for rising 3rd to 11th graders. -Passport NYC 92 Y (www.92y.org): New York City for rising 9th to 12th graders -URJ 6 Points Sports Academy (www.sports.urjcamps.org): Greensboro, NC for rising 4th to 11th graders -URJ 6 Points Sci-Tech Academy (www.scitech.urjcamps.org): Byfield, MA for rising 5th to 9th graders. Many of our TBT family have representation at these camps and we can put you in touch with them if you would like to hear a personal experience.
Jewish camps build Jewish community. As adults, campers are: 25% more likely to donate to a Jewish charity. 26% more likely to be members of a synagogue. 45% more likely to attend a synagogue at least once per month.
If your kids are too young or you prefer to keep them at home, consider some great day experiences right here in Atlanta. There’s a great day camp at the MJCCA (www.atlantajcc.org), with options from Pre-K through 10th grade. If you just want to test the waters, try Camp Sunday for Pre-K to 2nd grade. Another local option is In the City Camp at Emory University (www.inthecitycamp.com) for ages 5 – 14.
And, Jewish camps build Jewish leadership. One out of three Jewish professionals started out as counselors at Jewish camps. One out of 5 Jewish educators cited Jewish camp as a key experience that cause them to enter the field. There are so many options for Jewish Summer camps now, with varied lengths and programming for all interest areas. Consider these camps or go to www.jewishcamp.org to see other Jewish camps throughout the country.
The time may have passed to register your kids for overnight camps this summer, but you can start now to plan for next year. Feel free to chat with the Rabbi or utilize on-line resources at The Foundation for Jewish Camp (www.jewishcamp.org). You can apply for a $1000 scholarship for first time campers on the site as well. Additionally, there are scholarship opportunities from TBT. We have our own Camp Scholarship Fund, supported by the generous donations from our own congregants. This is a great way to honor or remember a loved one while helping one of our kids enjoy a Jewish camp experience.
-URJ Camp Coleman (www.coleman.urjcamps.org): Cleveland, GA for rising 3rd to 11th graders TBT won an award last year for having greater than 10% of our Religious School enrolled in one of their summer sessions. -Camp Barney Medintz (www.campbarney.org): Cleveland, GA for rising 3rd to 11 graders -Adamah Adventures (www.adamahadventures.org): Based in Atlanta, for rising 5th to 12th graders. Adamah Adventures was founded by our own youth group advisors, Adam and Bobbee Griff
I wish you all a safe and happy summer. If you have chosen a Jewish camp experience, I am confident that while your campers have a great time, you can be assured that they are safe, engaged and that they are gaining experiences toward a stronger Jewish identity as well as a love for Israel and that we are increasing the odds that their future will most likely include stronger leadership and engagement in their own Jewish communities. L’Shalom

Senior Rabbinic Transition Update Over the last several weeks many Beth Tikvah members made their voices heard through participation in focus groups or through emails to our focus group coordinator, Seth Zimmer. Thank you to everyone who made their voices heard. Your thoughts, concerns and wishes regarding our next Senior Rabbi will now be pulled together and added to the congregation's application to the Central Conference of American Rabbis. We invite you to visit the blog on bethtikvah.com, (Rabbinic Transition Update) to review the feedback summary, as well as blog posts regarding details of the ongoing search progress. TIKKUN LEYL SHAVUOT – I WAS THERE AT SINAI, TOO! THIS IS WHAT I HEARD… Throughout history, Jews have stayed up late at night studying Torah and sacred texts to commemorate the Giving of the Torah by God on Mt. Sinai on Shavuot. We are doing the same (but not so late). Let’s look at different sources relating to how God “revealed” the Torah to our people…and then add your own commentary! Following positive feedback from members of the Caring Committee, Social Action Committee and Administrative Staff Affinity Groups, JF&CS staff felt there was great and needed opportunity to bring together the Presidents and Vice Presidents to discuss concerns they were experiencing, like member retention and engagement. “For the past two years, representatives of synagogues in Atlanta have been meeting as a way to engage one another and talk about various topics affecting their synagogues,” said Brenda Fiske, Chief Marketing Officer at JF&CS. “We are thankful for the opportunity to convene these individuals,” said Gary Miller, CEO of JF&CS, who facilitates the meetings. “It allows us to offer examples and share research that provides clues to achieving success.” Cheryl Miller, President of Congregation Etz Chaim, has found the Affinity Group to be very helpful. “The meetings are a wonderful opportunity for the leaders of the area synagogues to come together to discuss challenges, successes and new ideas. It is very reassuring to know we’re all dealing with many of the same issues and they allow us to share strategies for moving our congregations forward.” Philip Siegel, President at Ahavath Achim Synagogue, told us "The Affinity Group has provided me with the opportunity to learn from others having similar experiences with their synagogues. I have found great value in the engaging dialogue, and it has been refreshing to know that I'm not in this alone. There are many similarities between our communities." The Presidents/VP Affinity Group meets three times a year at JF&CS in Dunwoody. For more information, contact engagement@jfcs-atlanta.org

Campaign TBT: EveryONE Matters Update At the beginning of our 2013-2014 campaign the Fundraising Committee established a financial and a participation goal. Participation Goal Our 2013-2014 goal was 100% participation. When we established this goal at the beginning of the campaign we knew it was going to be very difficult to reach. Our aim was to increase the participation rate among our 500 Temple Beth Tikvah families. In this year’s campaign about 1 in every 3 families contributed to the campaign. Financial Goal Our 2013-2014 financial goal was to raise $100,000. I am pleased to announce that with the help of our generous donors, including a few large contributions, we exceeded that goal. Funds were raised through: -Contributions made to the annual campaign -Casino Night (the Casino night in October was a sell-out with over 200 people attending) -Raffle ticket sales at the annual TBT meeting Exceeding our financial goal helped to balance the 2013-2014 TBT budget, supported the exciting programming offered at TBT, and enabled us to accelerate improvements to our facility. Thank You I would personally like to thank the members of the TBT Fundraising Committee for their work on this year’s campaign. I would also like to thank those that helped organize the Casino Night (especially Lindsay Levin who chaired the event and spent countless hours making the event a success). In addition, the Fundraising Committee would like to thank the families that participated in this year’s campaign (list below as of 5/1/2014). Thank you very much for your support. Sincerely,
Ruben Braiter, Fundraising Committee Chair
