Summer Tikkun Olam Projects - Repairing the World Temple Beth Tikvah and NW Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity Need Your Help—Please Volunteer!

The House that Faith Built Sunday, July 15 and 22, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Temple Beth Tikvah is partnering with other faith communities in the area and NW Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity to help build a home for a needy family. People from all walks of life are welcome to join us as we build a simple, decent, affordable house in partnership with God and a family in need. No construction experience or building skills are needed. You will be trained. Volunteers are involved in most phases of construction.

By working side-by-side with the family who will live in the house, our volunteers experience first hand for themselves the joy created when a family is able to realize their dream of home ownership.

Age Requirements and Restrictions A person must be 18 years of age or older to operate a power tool on a Habitat “The House That Faith Built” work site and do all other types of construction activity.

If you cannot volunteer, please consider making a donation to build the house. It takes $62,000 to build the home. Any amount will be appreciated.

Reform Judaism in Israel We spend a lot of time talking about Israel’s security. For good reason. However, how can we take care of the body properly if we don’t commit ourselves just as seriously to its soul? We often hear from generals and security experts about the existential threats facing Israel.

Iran is among the greatest threats Israel has ever faced, to be sure. But what about some of the internal struggles that Israel is facing?

influencing Israeli society for the better. They want a Jewish voice that will give them a community of inspiration, hope, and a view at Jewish sources that is modern and relevant.

Every one of us at Temple Beth Tikvah can be a part of supporting this effort to strengthen Israel as a democratic, inclusive Jewish community by belonging to ARZA, the Reform Fund for Israel. ARZA strengthens the Reform Zionist movement in the U.S., helps to fund Reform congregations in Israel, and supports the Israel Religious Action Center (www.irac.org).

Within Israel, we see an increasingly radicalized ultraOrthodox (Haredi) community engaging in acts of religious coercion. This segment of Israeli society has challenged women’s presence in the public domain. The Chief Rabbinate’s Office is emerging more and more fundamentalist, challenging other Orthodox rabbis and their conversions (never mind their exclusion of Reform and Conservative rabbis and our important work).

Hostility and even physical attacks are brewed in these anti-Zionist fringe communities. Yet, despite their minority status in Israel, their political power is great due to Israel’s challenging parliamentary system.

As our Nadiv Lev materials go out to you, you will notice an optional (but encouraged) item for you to join ARZA. ARZA will use these funds to continue to educate America’s Jews about Israel, Zionism and Reform Judaism in Israel. It will fund emerging congregations in Israel and IRAC. Your $36 membership fee will go a long way if our community stands together and does its part.

ARZA has committed itself to congregations like ours as it re-invests in our synagogue $2 out of the $36 to support Israel programming!

This fraction of Israeli society has held a monopoly of state -sponsored Jewish religious expression for decades. In more recent years, the High Court of Israel has mandated that the Government support Reform and Conservative institutions and programs. Those programs and opportunities presented to Israel’s Jewish citizens have been positively received with overwhelming success. But the playing field is still not level.

Your membership will enable ARZA to join with the Conservative Movement and the Jewish Federations of North America to continue the fight against religious exclusivity and coercion in Israel.

Zionism was always a big enough tent to include a spectrum of ideas, from Zeev Jabotinsky to Ahad Ha’Am, from David Ben-Gurion to Menachem Begin. While we join the common ground of supporting and showing our love for Israel, we are helping those share a voice reflecting our own, showing that there is more than one way to be Jewish.

Israel needs us. Not just our support in Congress for things like the Iron Dome Missile System, but to be a partner with Israelis to make sure that Israel’s democracy and Jewish pluralism is sound and strong. Because of what many consider to be a fundamentalist stranglehold over Judaism, many Israelis feel pushed away from developing their own faith and seeing a Jewish tradition that is spiritually compelling and meaningful.

So when you see your Nadiv Lev application this summer, I hope you check off the line to join ARZA and help Temple Beth Tikvah do its part as one community.

So here is my unabashed plea for support for the Reform movement in Israel. This Reform Jewish community is expanding in new communities to respond to a real need amongst Israelis. In the past ten years our congregations have doubled, our nursery schools have tripled and are full. Today the Israeli Reform movement, led by native born and Hebrew-speaking lay and rabbinic leaders, touches the lives of 250,000 Israelis. It is through the continued growth of our Movement that we are

Notes from Cantor Kassel Choir as “Spiritual Therapy” TBT choir, in the words of one of our members below, is “Spiritual Therapy”. By the time 7:30 p.m. rolls around on a Tuesday night of a choir rehearsal, we have all had long and possibly draining days. But when we walk out of the synagogue doors at the end of a rehearsal, we are relaxed and uplifted. Lately, I’ve been working with our choir to get out of our ‘heads’ and into our ‘hearts’ when we sing. This is how a choir can best reach the hearts and souls of others, enabling us to better connect to Judaism’s prayers and sacred texts. The words you will read below came unsolicited from me, but it does my soul good to know how positive an experience being in the choir is for our members. Maybe YOU will be inspired by these words and considering being a part of our “Spiritual Therapy”.

Words from one of our Adult Choir members To my fellow music lovers: So... do you sing along in the car, at all the Seders and with the choir when they sing?

Well, so do we! We wanted to clue you in on how much fun it really is to be part of the choir. A few fun facts: 85% of us do not read music, 90% of us do not read Hebrew. Shocked and surprised? Don’t be… Our Cantor makes our music accessible. When I first joined, I had not belonged to a formal music group before… I did not read music and in all honesty, was not exactly sure which voice part I sang. So, I joined the choir and while the first couple months were new and different, it all came together sooner than I had expected.

You just have to be honest and say… “I can’t read music, I can’t read Hebrew and I am not 100% sure what voice part I am. Will you let me sit in on a few rehearsals to see if I can do this?” Cantor Kassel will place you in the right section, seat you next to some friendly, fun folks who will help, hand you an organized notebook, and a practice CD to take home with you (and practice in the car) and you will do exactly what the rest of America does, we sing a song a few dozen times and voila…consider it memorized! We rehearse once a week and a little more for the High holidays.

It's not only a lot of fun, it's like a shot of spiritual therapy every week. We'd love for you to join us. High Holiday rehearsals begin August 7th at 7:00 p.m. Come one, come all! After High Holidays, rehearsals begin at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday night is “Choir” night.

Shalom Chaverim - ‫שלום חברים‬ “receiving” the Torah, always in the process of deepening our understanding of ourselves, our community, and G-d as we deepen our understanding of G-d’s mitzvot, or commandments.

We’ve just finished one of the busiest, and most meaningful times of year, both as Jews, as parents and grandparents, and as community members. The past few weeks have brought us not only Confirmation and a slew of graduations, but also the holiday of Shavuot, one of the most critical and foundational festivals in our Jewish lives.

Shavuot, which literally translates as ‘weeks,’ marks the seven weeks between the second day of Passover and the anniversary of the day in which G-d gave us the Torah on Mt. Sinai. Shavuot is about beginnings: If Passover marks the end of our years of slavery, Shavuot marks the beginning of our spiritual, intellectual maturity.

So as we celebrate so many of the new opportunities and beginnings for the children and youth of our community, let’s not forget the other chances for learning and new starts that are here for us all in our synagogue—right here at Temple Beth Tikvah. It may be learning something new about your spiritual self while sitting in Shabbat Services, or learning Hebrew with Cantor Kassel to possibly reach the day of being called to the Torah, or maybe it’s analyzing a parsha of Torah in our Saturday morning BLT led by Rabbi Greene. Come find your new beginning in the many opportunities for you here at TBT.

Likewise, Confirmation and graduations from high school and college (and even elementary school!) should not be seen as endings, but as the beginnings of times of even greater learning and opportunity. Both the holiday and the time of graduations are keen reminders that learning always contains the possibility of ‘more,’ ‘deeper, and ‘new.’ After all, we say that G-d gave us the Torah on Shavuot, not that we received the Torah. Our rabbis and sages have long pointed out that we are always

Religious School — A Year in Review

Youth Group News For Girl Scouts, there are: Lehavah Award (Grades 2-3) Bat Or Award (Grades 4-6) Menorah Award (Grades 7-9) Or Emunah Award (Grades 10-12)

Calling all Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cubs and Brownies‌ We are starting to form the courses for scouts (both girls and boys) in our community to provide them an opportunity to earn their religious emblems based on the various ranks.

Classes will be on Sunday afternoons, beginning in November.

For Boy Scouts, there are: Maccabee (Tigers) Aleph (Wolf/Bear/Webelos) Ner Tamid (Boy Scouts/Venturers ages 11-14) Etz Chaim (Boy Scouts/Venturers ages 14-18) Shofar (Adults)

We anticipate these emblems will be completed in time for Scout Shabbat, tentatively scheduled for Friday, February 8, 2013.

Early Childhood Education Center It is summer time, and the children of the Early Childhood Education Center are doing what they do best…having fun!

Summer is a time for relaxing in the sun, playing in the dirt and splashing in the pool! While all of those fun things are taking place here over the summer months, we are also gearing up for the upcoming school year!

The ECEC is so excited to begin another busy school year and are spending the quiet summer months planning and getting ready for all of our children! We are looking forward to the second successful year of Madrigot, our Kindergarten readiness program. This class provides the perfect opportunity for children that need the gift of time and an extra year to develop, socially, emotionally and cognitively before stepping foot into that public or private school classroom.

B’nai Mitzvah Jacob Janes will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June 2, 2012. He is the son of Beth and David Janes and brother to Nathan. Jacob is the grandson of Phyllis and Ira Madans, of Marietta and Mary Janes of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He is in the 7th grade a High Meadows School where he plays clarinet in the band. Jacob is an avid bowler having participated in a bowling league for the last 5 years. Jacob participated in Operation Paperback as part of his Bar Mitzvah project. He collect over 600 books throughout his neighborhood and he is looking forward to his Bar Mitzvah day.

Noah Chanavi Pollack will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June 2, 2012. He is the son of Audrey and Matthew Pollack and brother to Erin and Zachary. Noah just completed 7th grade at Holcomb Bridge Middle School where he is on the Honor Roll. Noah participates in Roswell Santos Soccer, Junior Knights Wrestling, and in his school band, playing both trumpet and euphonium.

Noah enjoys listening to music and spending time with his friends.

Jade Hava Tate will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on June 9, 2012. She is the daughter of Gail and Lloyd Tate and sister to Brandon, Aaron and Jessica. Jade is a 7th grade honor student at Dodgen Middle School, where she participates in several clubs, including Art, Environment, Beta and Builder's Club. Jade enjoys dance and plays cello in the Dodgen orchestra. She loves animals and was recognized by Mutt Madd-ness Dog Rescue raising money last summer for them. She recently adopted a Sea Turtle and is helping to pay for her care. Jade is a cherished daughter, friend, and always has fun with her two dogs, Petey and newly adopted rescue, Chester.

Jacob Lack will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June 16, 2012. He is the son of Nathaniel Lack and Melissa Lybarger and step-son to Ron Lybarger. Jacob is brother to Reuben and Aaron, and step-brother to Forrest and Summer. He is the grandson of the late Sanford and Ruth Lack of Houston, Texas and Ann Williamson and the late Larry Williamson of Dallas, Texas. Jacob is a 7th grader at Hopewell Middle School. He is on the Principal’s Honor Roll, a member of his school’s Junior Beta Club and plays trumpet in the school’s Symphonic Band. Jacob is an avid soccer player in the Alpharetta Ambush League. Jacob has also raised money for his school’s band program for the past two years.

TBT’s 25th Anniversary Tribute Book—Be a Part of our History and Anniversary As we gear up for TBT’s 25th Anniversary celebration weekend October 12th—14th, we want to give each member of our community an opportunity to contribute to this momentous occasion. TBT’s 25th Anniversary Tribute Book will be your chance to publicly acknowledge, honor, thank and remember people and/or moments at TBT that have touched you and your family. Every TBT family will receive a copy of the Tribute Book.

TBT’s Early Childhood Center wants your aluminum cans!

Please save your aluminum cans and put them in our recycling bin located outside in the back parking lot. It is mighty big, so send in all that you have! By doing this simple deed, you will be helping the ECEC as we will get money back from what we collect, but most importantly you will be helping our world and creating a better place for our children!

Why should I do it? It’s a great lesson in Tikkun Olam, repairing the world! When should I send in my cans? Send in one or send in a bunch– it doesn’t matter how many or when! Can I bring other recyclables? Anything aluminum — pie pans, cat food cans, etc.

In the Community Is it Dementia? Find out with a Simple Memory Screening May was Older Americans Month, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t continue to focus on our elderly parents, spouses and selves all year long!

We all joke about how as we get older, memory is the “first to go.” But it’s no joke. A lot of people don’t realize that memory and cognitive decline can stem from a variety of causes, and what might seem obvious isn’t always the case.

While many might assume it’s related to Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of dementia, the loss of memory can be due to thyroid imbalance, nutritional or metabolic disorders, depression, stroke, Parkinson’s disease or a host of other conditions. The right diagnosis is extremely important to ensure proper treatment.

A non-invasive, pencil - and paper-type test can provide information about an individual’s memory and cognitive functioning to determine if problems are consistent with normal age-related cognitive decline or some other cause.

Because many causes of cognitive decline in older adults are treatable or partially treatable, it is important not to assume that a person who is showing any symptoms of dementia is suffering from an incurable disease.

JF&CS’ Aviv Older Adult Services – Tools for Aging division is hosting a Memory Screening Clinic on June 7, 2012.

These free, confidential screenings will be open to the public and include follow-up resources and educational materials for older adults who are concerned about memory loss. The 30-minute screenings are not comprehensive diagnostic evaluations but can help promote awareness and action toward getting help for cognitive impairment or dementia if needed. Screenings will be offered by appointment only at JF&CS’ main office at 4549 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30338. Appointments can be scheduled from 10 am to 4:30 pm.

It has been a joy getting to know all of you and sharing in your life cycle events.

I have taken on a new position with another synagogue in the area. You will see a new face in the office. Please be sure to come in and welcome the “new kid on the block” the next time you are here!

On October 11, the Anti-Defamation League and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus will present Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezin, a multi-media concert that tells the story of the courageous Jewish prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp during World War II who learned Verdi’s Requiem Mass by rote and then performed this compelling work 16 times.

The concert/drama features a full performance of the Requiem, video testimony with surviving members of the choir, original Nazi propaganda film footage, and actors telling the remarkable story of the Jewish prisoners who sang as a symbol of secret defiance against their Nazi captors. The performance is powerful, dramatic and inspirational, with a contemporary message of hope.
