These are just but a few of the ways many of us find joy and purpose on our Jewish journeys. And YOU? Where do you find your heart being lead?
We know that as we each travel through our different phases of life, we are constantly seeking new ways to find meaningful sacred experiences. To connect more deeply with others, to be valued and to know that we matter. To encounter the sacred Divine, opening us to explore our inner lives, that we might better understand our purpose in life.
All Beth Tikvah members are invited to explore individually where they see themselves in their Jewish life and in the Life of Temple Beth Tikvah. Through conversations with Rabbi Shuval-Weiner members are encouraged to explore and craft their own MasaTripTik for their own Jewish growth and development.
Because Jewish engagement manifests itself differently from person to person, at Temple Beth Tikvah we strive to provide a diverse menu of inspired, down-to-earth Jewish programs and opportunities to touch the soul. The path one selects is an individual choice.

For one it may be the way of Tikkun Olam; pursuing justice, marching on behalf of human rights or serving food to our Family Promise guests or knitting scarves for the homeless. For another it may be through Talmud Torah; a passion for learning. Sitting each week at the Rabbi’s table studying the weekly Torah portion or working with the Cantor to learn to chant a Haftarah, or debating a point of Talmud with Rabbi Tam. Others might yearn for Chevrah; Social Connections. Participating in Sisterhood or Men’s Club. Playing on the TBT baseball 2

Coffee Confessionals In today's world it's not uncommon to hear that while people are looking for ways to be spiritually engaged they shy away from institutional religion because they think they feel frustrated, lost, confused, guilty, bored or uninspired by synagogue life. Luckily, I also hear amazing stories of joy, happiness, fun, friendship and spiritual fulfillment. Some are angry at G-d. Some question G-d’s existence. The good news is, they are all correct. Most importantly, all of these congregants are welcome. People feel what they feel and that is ok. What worries me most as President? Indifference. It is difficult to hear when you work hard as a lay leader and committee chair to hear that people are unhappy, however, these “outsiders”, or those frustrated, or angry with Judaism or feeling left out are simply demonstrating that they care. They want to be heard. The want to be on the inside. They want to make connections. They want to find their way home. There is always a home at Temple Beth Tikvah. There is always a place to belong, a place to call your own. It’s ok if you don’t know or remember Hebrew. It’s ok if you aren’t into sports. It’s ok if you can’t sing. It’s ok if you don’t knit or play Mahjong. Really, it is. Judaism comes from a long line of outsiders: Abraham & Sarah, Jacob leaving home, Joseph disappearing into Egypt, Moses who didn’t even know he was Jewish. Reach out. Reach in. Give us a chance to know you where you are. Let’s meet for coffee. Let’s spend some time together. Reach out to me or another board member for ways to get involved in YOUR synagogue. As this is the season for day camps, overnight camps, and family trips, I am reminded of one of my favorite songs from my camper days at Camp Coleman, The Circle Game. I am also reminded of these lyrics at this time as a significant part of my job during the summer is reflecting back on the past year to plan and create curriculum for the upcoming year. This past year has brought some great moments and some changes to our programs. We had a Saturday night kindergarten - second grade havdallah family education night. Our third graders and their parents made portraits with Israeli artist, Hanoch Piven, and our sixth grade families together made a quilt that included each of the sixth grader’s torah portions that will be used when they each receive a blessing before becoming a bar/bat mitzvah. We had schoolwide events including getting to visit with a young camel for Yom Ha’atzmaut and having a field day on the last day of school. Many of our teachers changed up their classrooms to experiment with different types of seating, including bean bags and balance balls. Even our school lobby was redesigned to make it a warmer place to gather and in which to pray. The biggest change for our third - sixth graders was the flexibility in our Hebrew classes. This upcoming year we will continue to experiment with our programs. We are in the process of creating a written curriculum for our kindergarten - sixth grade and revising parts of our seventh twelfth grade curriculum. This curriculum will include daily class building/relationship building activities. New teachers are being hired for several of our classes. Starting this fall, we will be blessed with having one of the shinshinim (Israeli teens who have just finished high school and have deferred their military service to serve their country first by being a representative of Israel to Jews in the United States, in our case in Metro Atlanta) be with us each Monday night and Tuesday afternoon of our educational programs. We will be announcing more experiments and experiences as we get closer to the start of our academic year. In the meantime, we hope everyone has a fantastic summer. All of these are skills which we hope that they will practice and use throughout their high school years and beyond. Leadership is a learned skill. As parents, you can encourage your teens to seek out opportunities where they can learn how to be a leader and to practice these skills. These are the leaders of our youth group. The ones who will set the tone, plan the programs, and ensure the future of HOTTY. How do they do this? They start the year off in August with a weekend board retreat. This weekend is about fun, bonding and learning how to work together (what you might call the “soft skills.”) However, most of the weekend is spent learning the “hard skills.” The talk about the qualities that make a great leader: things like, delegation, communication, enthusiasm, and honesty. They learn how to manage their time and what it means to be accountable (Doing what you said you would do, as you said you would do it, when you said you would do it – PERIOD). They also spend time during this weekend setting goals for themselves for the coming year. They make action plans for the steps needed to make their goals happen and how they will measure their results. It’s a packed weekend, that hopefully our teens walk away from with the knowledge and skills necessary to lead HOTTY for the upcoming year. For all of our teens looking to expand on their leadership skills, they are invited to attend NFTYSAR’s Leadership Training Institute, August 2426, 2018 at Camp Coleman. There they have the opportunity to learn general leadership skills, as well as choose various electives based on their

B’nai Mitzvah Emma Stacey Hurwitz (Meira Sivan) will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on June 2, 2018. Emma is the daughter of Suzanne and Phil and younger sister of Katie. She is the granddaughter of Nancy and Irving Lipton, Marilyn Nadel, and Neil and Cris Hurwitz. Emma is a rising 8th grader at Autrey Mill Middle School, where her favorite subject are math and art, and she is involved in the Interact Club. She enjoys doing gymnastics and art, reading, and spending time with her sister and her friends. She is looking forward to her sixth summer at Camp Barney Medintz. Emma’s favorite mitzvah projects include volunteering with Safehouse Outreach and Rainbow Village. We all look forward to celebrating this special day with her! Aaron Parker will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June 30, 2018. Aaron will be in the 8th grade at Simpson Middle School this Fall. It will be his 3rd year playing the Double French Horn in the band and he's looking forward to going on the annual band trip to Disney World in the Spring. Aaron loves being outside and especially loves camping with his family whether it's in the North GA mountains or in Pigeon Forge, TN. Aaron also loves playing video games and doing science experiments. For Aaron's Mitzvah Project, he's raising money to send to JNF for trees to be planted in Israel. Aaron thanks his parents and his brother Brett for all of their support as well as Rabbi ShuvalWeiner and Cantor Nancy Kassel.
Did you know TBT has 2 softball teams and they are good! TBT has been represented by two teams in the Synagogue Softball League for more than 15 years. This past season, the “A” Team lost in the championship game in its division, while the “B” Team won the championship in its division. With two teams, we’re always looking for the next Hank Greenberg or Sandy Koufax, so let us know if you’d like to play next season. Hello Sisterhood and welcome to all new and returning members! We have had a great year and now look forward to new beginnings! Ilana Zalkin will be the new Sisterhood Chair starting July 1st. Hats off to her for taking the lead for Sisterhood! Ilana comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and expertise, and I am delighted that she is our next chair. Welcome Ilana! Key folks on our committee need super recognition this year. A great thank you shouts out to Kara Segal, our treasurer, Alicia Sher, our communications coordinator, and Jenni Trebon, our secretary. All 3 have been so dedicated to getting the job done and have been so supportive of Sisterhood. A special thank you is in order for Jamie Burak, organizer extraordinaire of our end of the year event, Cork and Canvas Painting Party, held in mid May. We all had a great time creating unique art, schmoozing and noshing. Thank you Jamie!

Bridge Lessons for Beginners starting in July at her home in Peachtree corners. Classes will be held once a week for two hours for a total of 14 sessions. A donation to Temple Beth Tikvah Sisterhood is suggested as follows: $54 per couple or $30 per individual. Since bridge is not everyone’s game, checks will not be collected by Fran until after the 3rd session.

Mark and I first became part of the Temple Beth Tikvah family when our son Matthew started in the preschool 13 years ago when he was 2 years old. We quickly decided that we wanted to make TBT our spiritual home and have been members ever since. My parents, Pat and Fred, joined TBT around the same time and we have remained active members ever since. I have served on the Board of Trustees and many years on the Board of Education. I have been teaching in the Religious School and preschool for the last 6 years. Currently, my mom and I co-teach the 2nd grade. Mark served on the search committee for the Director of Congregational Learning as well as being active in the Men’s Club. Our boys both have attended the preschool and religious school, participated in youth group activities, and Matthew had his Bar Mitzvah in 2016. My parents are active in their Chavurah and Pat also is a member of the Tai-Chi group that meets weekly. We have all found our place in the TBT community and find it a special place that has been there for us during our simchas and life cycle events.
