An Obituary for Someone Else I know that all of you were saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our synagogue’s most valuable members – Someone Else.
So I ask you to continue to share your presence. Bring the best of you and your search for meaning, your journey, your struggle, your time, your gifts, your head, your heart, your hands and this will continue to strengthen our covenanted community. If you don't know how to pray, how to study sacred texts, how to mend the world, we'll teach you. No one is excluded. But neither is anyone excused. Everyone has something of which they can fashion as an offering. That's what a sacred community demands.
Someone's passing created a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us for many years, and for every one of those years, Someone did far more than the normal person's share of the work. Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results. Someone Else can work with that group. Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone's lips, "Let Someone Else do it." It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the largest givers in the synagogue. Whenever there was a financial need, everyone just assumed that Someone Else would make up the difference.

Tisha B’av - Rabbi Donald Tam Observance of Tisha B’av, the evening of July 28 2012 at 8:00 PM Tisha B’av, the 9th of the Hebrew month of AV, commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples and Jerusalem, in the first instance by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E., and in the second instance by the Romans in the year 70.
Someone Else was a wonderful person, sometimes appearing super-human, but a person can only do so much. Were the truth known, everyone expected too much of Someone Else. Now Someone Else is gone. We wonder what we are going to do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to do the things Someone Else did? Remember, we can't depend on Someone Else anymore.
The same date is associated with other catastrophes in Jewish history, among them the expulsion order for the Jews of Spain by the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492. Temple Beth Tikvah will take note of this date with a short ma-ariv service at the Synagogue beginning at 8:00 PM, which will include a reading from the Book of Aycha, (Lamentations), that custom associates with the prophet Jeremiah, who witnessed the First Destruction. We will also look at a couple of rabbinic texts, which attempt to give explanation and cause for the destruction of the First Temple and Jerusalem in 79 C.E. These efforts to give reason to what was the greatest tragedy affecting the Jewish People until the Shoah of our own era have a message that is as current as today’s news.
-- Author Unknown When I first arrived at Temple Beth Tikvah, after the grand vote on whether or not to bring me to serve as the next rabbi in March of 2006, I shared with our community that Judaism is not a spectator sport. We all need to do our part. So today, as I did then, I am going to call on you to be a partner. We are entering into a new program year. We have many new people to our leadership team and I am optimistic about…well, so much! It is going to be an exciting, stimulating, and busy year. We are launching an ambitious social justice project with Family Promise of North Fulton; we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary with prayer, Torah and song; we are investing in our youth program to make our young people an integrated part of our community, expanding our social media work to make sure we connect to our diverse community, and so much more.
The evening should end by 9:30 PM or so. No refreshments will be served as this date is marked by a full fast, according to our Tradition, although Reform Jews may choose to fast only part of the day, the whole day, or not at all. Still, the day is remembered and marked, not forgotten, symbolizing a time that was filled with upheaval and convulsion for our people in days gone by, may we be spared from such days in the future.

Shalom Chaverim - שלום חברים In some reading recently, I ran across the following from Rabbi John Moscowitz. “No other place, no other culture, bolsters Jews, builds character and betters religious community as does the synagogue. No other institution provides deep and broad learning about the world as does the synagogue. No other institution brings Jews together in prayer, in a longing of hope and humility, as does the synagogue. No place can so persuade Jews that service to G-d and to others is the best nourishment for a hungry soul as does the synagogue.” And I was inspired. I think of our Early Childhood Education Center nourishing our youngest, from 20 children several years ago to 40 little ones a couple of years ago to 60+ children this past year, And I am inspired. I stand in shul on a Saturday morning, and feel Cantor Kassel lift our souls with the Kedushah, as together we rise on our toes three times toward G-d, And I am inspired. I watch our congregation lead in the first ever Sunday American Cancer Society Relay for Life in the world with Relay for Life-Ruach Atlanta set for October 14, 2012 -- to say to the world . . . we want to be part of this healing, and we want to do so in a way that is in keeping with our Jewish tradition, And I am inspired. I see the group of our fellow congregants work so hard to plan our 25th Anniversary celebration weekend that speaks so clearly to who we are as a synagogue, And I am inspired. I experience Rabbi Greene as he teaches from the heart with his D’vrei Torah, And I am inspired. Knowing that just a couple of weeks ago in a working Board of Trustees session, the Board reaffirmed the importance of our congregation’s founding traditional orientation within a Reform context, as was done in the congregational strategic planning focus groups last year, and as was done in our congregational Endowment effort focus groups a couple of years before that, And I am inspired. So now friends, a challenge to you: what Jewishly inspires you? Take a few quiet moments. Think about it. What lifts your soul? What causes you to think about the “Big” questions that at some point we must all face? What inspires you? Because . . .we want to keep doing that which lifts you, or we want to start doing that which will inspire you, in meaningful prayer, in creating community, in stimulating study and in tikkun--repairing the world. Religious School I hope everyone is having a wonderfully relaxing summer! The religious school is busy preparing for an exciting new school year. We are fortunate to have most of our dedicated teachers returning for the 2012-2013 school year and we are looking forward to welcoming new teachers to the Temple Beth Tikvah teaching faculty as well. We are all working together diligently to make this upcoming school year a wonderful experience. I am thrilled that we have received so many registration forms. If you have not mailed your registration form to the office yet, please do so as soon as possible. B’nai Mitzvah Samuel Isaac Berman will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on August 4, 2012. Sammy is the son of Andrea and Josh Berman and brother to Spencer and Austin. He is the grandson of Evelyn and Fredley Berman and Harriette and Mark Becker, all of Aventura, Florida. He attends Dickerson Middle School and will be entering the 8th grade this fall. Sammy is an avid baseball player and plays on a year round travel team. He loves spending time with his friends and just being a kid. Sammy is looking forward to this special day as he has learned quite a bit about family, faith and community through the many mitzvah projects he has done in preparing to become a Bar Mitzvah.

Calling all Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cubs and Brownies‌ We are starting to form the courses for scouts (both girls and boys) in our community to provide them an opportunity to earn their religious emblems based on the various ranks.
Classes will be on Sunday afternoons, beginning in November.

Social Action in Action Temple Beth Tikvah and NW Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity Need Your Help—Please Volunteer!
The House that Faith Built Sunday, July 15 and 22, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Temple Beth Tikvah is partnering with other faith communities in the area and NW Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity to help build a home for a needy family. People from all walks of life are welcome to join us as we build a simple, decent, affordable house in partnership with God and a family in need. No construction experience or building skills are needed. You will be trained. Volunteers are involved in most phases of construction. By working side-by-side with the family who will live in the house, our volunteers experience first hand for themselves the joy created when a family is able to realize their dream of home ownership. Age Requirements and Restrictions A person must be 18 years of age or older to operate a power tool on a Habitat “The House That Faith Built” work site and do all other types of construction activity. If you cannot volunteer, please consider making a donation to build the house. It takes $62,000 to build the home. Any amount will be appreciated. Knitters Needed! Knit for good causes. Knitters have three choices for knitting during the summer: First, are Mommy Love Squares. Second, you can knit 7 X 9 squares...any patterns you want. These will be put together (9 at a time) for the children at The Drake House. As you know this is the crisis house for Mothers and their children in Roswell. The third project is called Project of Love Caps. A woman named Betty Golden knits and coordinates the knitting of these hats for children with cancer at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Scottish Rite Cancer Center. Calling All Artists! Exciting Tzedakah Box Project! Our Jewish Federation is launching a Community Tzedakah Box Project to energize and excite Jews in Atlanta and Temple Beth Tikvah is going to be part of it! What is the Community Tzedakah Box Project? Have you ever walked through cities and noticed fiberglass statues of animals such as FISH or COWS or TURTLES that have been decorated by local artists or groups? The Tzedakah Box Project is our Jewish community’s version of this concept. It’s intended to be a fun, creative way to show your support for our community. This project is a great way to bring our community together and promote one of our core Jewish values: tzedakah. It’s through philanthropy that we can all care for one another and ensure that no Jew feels alone. As a participant in this project, a 4-foot tall tzedakah box will be delivered to us for display in our lobby or other indoor public area during September and October. The fun part is that individuals connected with Temple Beth Tikvah will decorate the tzedakah box to create a unique piece of art. We will have a month to decorate our box – it’s a great team-building opportunity, something fun for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah class, youth group, committee activity, and of course our outstanding artists – and then the project will really get started. We will have our own panel of judges to pick the design for our box. Since there are 4 sides, there is a possibility of 4 selections or one "team" may design the entire box. Since this unique project coincides with our 25th Anniversary, we would like for that to be the theme of the designs. It could be a tree of life, something in our sanctuary, etc. BE CREATIVE! The Federation will then send a panel of 3 judges to see each organization’s tzedakah box and the winning design will receive a $1,500 grant AND the Community Grand Prize Winner (which also includes community organization submissions) will be recreated on “normal” size tzedakah boxes for community members to take home. A different tzedakah box each week will be listed in our Federation's e-newsletter, along with a profile of the organization to which it belongs and they hope to have the boxes on display at the Federation’s Community Event in January 2013.

We wish you the best of luck as you move forward to the next phase of your life, be it college or career. Mazal tov! On October 11, the Anti-Defamation League and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus will present Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezin, a multi-media concert that tells the story of the courageous Jewish prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp during World War II who learned Verdi’s Requiem Mass by rote and then performed this compelling work 16 times. The concert/drama features a full performance of the Requiem, video testimony with surviving members of the choir, original Nazi propaganda film footage, and actors telling the remarkable story of the Jewish prisoners who sang as a symbol of secret defiance against their Nazi captors.
