HAPPY NEW YEAR! Happy 2019 Temple Beth Tikvah! Well, it’s that time of the year again, when we make those personal improvement plans; resolutions for individual betterment with the turning of the calendar. Maybe you purchase a treadmill or sign up with a walking coach or even decide to start a new diet. This year, why not incorporate some Judaism into your New Year's resolutions? Here are six ideas you might want to consider to deepen your practice of Judaism and relationship to Temple Beth Tikavh in 2019!

Become a more Shabbat observant Reform Jew. “Rabbi, I always feel so good at the end of Shabbat services, I really need to come more often!” Have you been meaning to attend Shabbat services but just didn't make it a priority last year? Now's the perfect time! TBT has numerous styles of Shabbat services, Musical & high energy, mellow & meditative, liturgically traditional, and of course early and later (6:30 or 8:00 pm)—find the service style and time that’s right for you! And for those Friday nights when you just can't make it to shul, try logging on to the TBT website, we stream all of our services!

Consider learning to bake Challah or just kindle Shabbat lights before heading out for a night with friends. Want to have a conversation about how to bring a little more Shabbas into your life? Let’s talk, we’ll get creative and find that special spice to add to your life!

Commit to engaging with Torah more this year. Find ways to bring more Torah learning into your life! Torah study can offer a different lens on how to best live one’s life. Here at TBT, we study Torah every Shabbat afternoon beginning at 12:30 pm.

Join us to pray or just for study-whatever works for you. There’s always a seat at the table saved just for you! Maybe you’ve become rusty with chanting Torah or Haftarah, Cantor Kassel will be delighted to help you shake out the cobwebs and revive those skills. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of being called to Torah but not sure how to go about learning. We have folks ready to help you make this wish come true! Give us a call. We will get you going and even set a date for you to chant during a service this year.

Commit to strengthen your relationship with Israel. The State of Israel is at the very core of Jewish identity and Jewish peoplehood. In 2019 TBT will again travel to Israel. This year’s journey will take place over Hanukkah and New Year’s, giving time to save those shekels for what will be a truly unforgettable pilgrimage with old and new friends. Nourish Body, Mind & Soul. Put a fresh focus this year on health and wellness. Our tradition teaches that each one of us is unique, created by the Divine Source. As such there are mitzvoth associated with respect for our bodies & souls. Join us for a Sacred Living, Sacred Aging or Sacred Parenting group in 2019. Consider learning Tai Chai or participate in our monthly Meditation Circle. In partnership with area agencies, Temple Beth Tikvah offers support and resources in the areas of mental illness, Jewish genetic diseases, substance abuse, bereavement, chronic illness, infertility, and more, through support groups, learning sessions and referrals. No one should ever feel alone here at TBT. And many have skills to share. If you or a loved one needs assistance, we are here to support YOU!

Engage more deeply in Tikkun Olam. “Social justice has always been an essential component of Reform Judaism. To be a Reform Jew is to hear the voice of the prophets in our head; to be engaged in the ongoing work of tikkun olam (repair of the world); to strive to improve the world in which we live; to be God’s partners in standing up for the voiceless and fixing what is broken in our society.” URJ Here at TBT, there are many ways to fulfill the prophetic vision. Consider participating in a project of the Tzedek Committee in 2019 (Dalia Faupel & Lori Goldstrom co-chairs) Doing things as simple as making PB&J sandwiches for Roswell’s food insecure children, knitting hats and blankets for folks at the Zaban Shelter, volunteering with your TBT friends at a local area helping agency or cleaning the street along TBT’s designated Roswell Clean area. We have in-house and outside projects available year-round.

Perhaps you want something focused on advocacy; marching and praying with your feet. Consider representing TBT at the RAC’s (Religious Action Center) Consultation on Conscience, the 2019 URJ Biennial Convention, or the 2019 AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington D.C.

Make a new friend in 2019. Here at TBT, we offer so many ways for people to connect. Whether playing softball in one of our two league teams, making friendly visits to members in hospital, playing Bridge, taking an Adult Ed class, or hiking and biking with an affinity group; there really is something for everyone, all you need to do is to say, “This year I will find my passion at TBT!”

ABOUT CANTOR LEVSON: Cantor Martin Levson graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor’s degree in Music and History and received his Master of Sacred Music and Ordination from Hebrew Union College, (a classmate of Cantor Kassel).

He has served as Cantor for congregations in Tulsa, OK (where he met Rabbi Shuval-Weiner) New York and Massachusetts. Cantor Levson released a CD of Music of Jewish Meditation “Kolot D’mamah”, performed the world premiere of “Yizkor: Music of Memory and Mourning”, has served on the faculty of the URJ Eisner Camp and Crane Lake Camp, and is a former Executive Board member of the American Conference of Cantors. He has sung with symphonies, had leading roles in community musical theater productions and performed with the best of Jewish composers and performers in this country. All this - is only the tip of the iceberg of his accomplishments.

CANTOR KASSEL’S PERSONAL ADDENDUM TO CANTOR LEVSON’S BIO Martin Levson is one of the brightest, funniest, talented most creative cantors, with an amazing memory and gift for story-telling - who can play and sing just about anything on the guitar as well as sing all types of sacred and secular music. CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING—SUSAN COSDEN “Family is the first school for children, and parents are powerful models.” - Alice Sterling Honig We at Temple Beth Tikvah are so honored to partner with the parents in our congregation to help raise menschen. Research tells us that when children see their parents actively engaged in their Jewish education they take their Jewish education more seriously and that it has a much bigger impact. Family education is a great way to show your child how much Judaism and their Jewish education means to you. Studying together as a family also allows your family to take time to explore Jewish values, concepts, rituals, and holidays; and together, choose what rituals and customs of Judaism you want to try as a family. Many of our family educational programs give parents the opportunity to both study as adults, continuing your own Jewish education, and study as a family. The adult study sessions also empower parents to have more resources and knowledge at their fingertips to help raise Jewish children.

This month at TBT, we have family education days, a synagogue wide education day, and a special family Shabbat experience. We have three family education days this month. On Sunday, January 6 we hope our sixth - twelfth graders will join us at the AntiSemitism Summit we are co-sponsoring, which will take place at Temple Sinai. Sunday, January 13 will be our first and second grade family education day. Building upon what the students have been learning all year we will explore, Na’aseh V’nishmah (We will do and we will hear) and then we will make our own Shema pillow cases and mezuzot. Families are encouraged to wear pajamas since we will be doing bedtime rituals. Monday, January 28 will be our second parent night for Kesher. At the end of each unit of study our parents join our eighth and ninth graders to study together. Sunday, February 3 will be our next family education day for our third grade.

Friday, January 11 will be our next Munchkin Shabbat with services at 5:30 followed by a pot-luck dinner. We are trying something new by having a theme for the evening: Princes, Princesses, Prinzes, and Superheroes. This Shabbat is geared to families with young children and is intergenerational. We would love to have parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, cousins, join their little ones at this service. I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s costumes. (Please no full face masks) Saturday, January 26 our entire congregation is invited to join us 5:00-7:00 pm to learn about and celebrate Tu B’Shevat, the birthday of the trees. On this night we will have the opportunity to both celebrate as an ENTIRE congregation and to study and celebrate with our peers. Yes, we want all of our members who are already empty nesters or grandparents to join us. Yes, we want you to join us if you are single or married and have not had children. This event is for ECEC families through adult education attendees. Together we will say goodbye to Shabbat with havdallah and enjoy a Tu B’Shevat Seder. Separately, the preschoolers, kindergarten - second grade, third - fifth grade, sixth - eighth grade, and adults will get to further explore the meaning and traditions of Tu B’Shevat, our Earth/Arbor Day. This night is in lieu of religious school the next morning.

It would be remiss of me to talk about family education and not mention that once again we will be hosting a family retreat at URJ Camp Coleman on March 15-17. We hope you will be able to spend the weekend with us in Cleveland, GA. Happy secular New Year. May this year be full of family time learning and growing together.

YOUTH GROUP Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great New Year’s and Winter Break. This month is HOTTY’s 8th Grade Rush. HOTTYites go to the houses of the 8th graders, surprise them, and bring them back to TBT for a fun and social night. The evening is designed to welcome in all of the new 8th graders, show them how much fun youth group is, and get them excited to join HOTTY! I thought I’d share some of my favorite 8th Grade Rush memories with y’all! Some of you may remember Aaron Schwartz – when he was in HOTTY we sent him to the house of his best friend’s little brother. This 8th grader’s parents weren’t going to be home, so we figured he’d open the door for Aaron, a familiar face. Well, he didn’t answer the door, so Aaron, who knew the garage code, let himself in and scared the living daylights out of this 8th grader! (No worries - he recovered, had a good laugh, and ended up loving the event and HOTTY!). The year we went to the Main Event, after playing arcade games and winning hundreds of tickets, all of the HOTTYites & 8th graders decided to pool their tickets and buy one big thing for the youth lounge. If you think your 10-year-old has trouble deciding on a prize from the ticket counter – try 40 8th-10th graders agreeing on one thing! (We ended up with a lava lamp.) A few years ago, we went to Skyzone and one of the 8th graders fell and had to go to the hospital for X-rays of his ankle. Of course, I don’t love that he got hurt and had to be picked up, but what really makes that story memorable is that he didn’t want to miss any of the event and in fact, made it back to temple in time for Havdallah with everyone! (In case you’re wondering, he went on to be one of our HOTTY board members). And three years ago, for our biggest group ever, we took over a Waffle House – we packed every seat in the restaurant. Apparently, we really bonded with the cooks and servers who wanted to be in our group picture outside of the restaurant! (Check out the picture below )

So, for all of the 8th grade parents – I can’t promise that the night will go exactly as planned, but I can promise that your 8 th grader will be surprised (in a good way), meet some new friends, and have a fun (and memorable!) evening. Hope to see them all there!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Todah Rabah! Thank you!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your heartfelt support during the last 7 months as President of our community. So much happens at Temple Beth Tikvah on a 24/7 basis. We all have much to be grateful for from our clergy, to our staff, to our lay leaders, to our volunteers and especially you, our many members of our community that make us whole.

We have shared joys and sorrows TOGETHER, always together these last few months. From High Holy Days, to Simchas, to Festivals, to Programs, to Natural Disasters to Human catastrophes, antisemitism and hate. We have stood together as a synagogue family. We pray together. We learn together. We build, maintain and sustain our community together.

Just like lighting candles at Shabbat, telling the story of Passover, and lighting candles at Chanukah to remember the Rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem, the act of giving is a Jewish value. Thank you ALL for your annual commitment to Temple Beth Tikvah whether you pay annually, quarterly or monthly AND to the best of your ability.

Thank you to those of you who support our many programs financially. Thank you to those of you who donated extra financial gifts to assist with additional security for Shabbat and school following the tragedy in Pittsburgh. Thank you to those who prepared food for families in need or donated monies for grocery gift cards. Thank you for the donations at the Mitzvah Fair. Your acts of Tzedakah have made a difference.

Thank you to those that have given a gift to Temple Beth Tikvah that endows your annual commitment, so you can be a member in perpetuity. What would it mean to you if you could join these members and know that in the future TBT will still be here in Roswell and a thriving congregation for your children and grandchildren? How can you join me and our Board of Trustees in having an impact on our Jewish community and ourselves? I envision a strong Jewish community in the northern arch suburbs of Atlanta not only surviving but thriving in 10 years, in 20 years and beyond. I envision a congregation that is whole, solid, and fiscally sound with dynamic programming, a school full of happy and engaged students and a sanctuary full of spiritual and holy God seeking Jewish souls of every age. I see movement and life rich with history. Please join me and our board in building Temple Beth Tikvah’s future, a place where Jews of diverse backgrounds come together to worship and find solace, peace and community.

Please consider increasing your annual commitment, participating in our annual campaign, sponsoring a program that you have interest in further developing, and assisting with our continued need of heightened security in light of increasing anti-Semitic threats and violence.

SISTERHOOD Shalom Sisterhood!!

I hope you had a fabulous holiday season. We closed 2018 with two wonderful events with David Moss, our fascinating artist- in -residence at TBT for the first week in December. Our mother-daughter teams made beautiful artwork, got a glimpse into David’s magnificent Haggadah and asked the most compelling questions. What a joy to see this generation of beautiful and smart young ladies, the future of TBT! Sisterhood also had the opportunity to have an intimate session with David exploring The Moss Haggadah, hearing anecdotes and stories relating to each page and getting up close and personal with both the artist and his beautiful work of art! What a treat.

Looking forward to 2019, our first event of the new year is Mah Jongg, Margaritas and Munchies set to happen on Wednesday January 30th at 7PM. PLEASE SAVE THE DATE!! In store are prizes, teachers available to assist our beginners, tables for mavens and of course margarita mixers to satisfy all palates (don’t whine, there will be wine!).

Although not a tournament, it is a great opportunity to play and learn, and of course to schmooze with our awesome Sisterhood women. If per chance Wednesday is your usual Maj Jongg night bring your gang to play with us! No need to be a member-we welcome all who want to join us for this event.

To date, all of our Sisterhood events have been well attended and a lot of fun. What would make it even more so would be participation by all of you! So, don’t be shy and make a resolution to join at least one Sisterhood event. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

MAZAL TOV B’NAI MITZVAH Jonathan Cutler will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on January 26, 2019. Jonathan is the son of Joshua and Natasha Cutler. He is in the 7th grade at New Life Academy of Excellence where he participates in the Debate Club.

Outside of school, Jonathan plays piano, lacrosse and sings in TBT’s Jr. Choir. In his free time, he also loves to travel, read, hike and spend time playing with his two dogs, Rex and Lola.

For his Bar Mitzvah project, he supported Tutu Project of Carey Foundation, a charity which supports Breast Cancer patients in covering expenses not paid by insurance. Jonathan ran two 5Ks each month for a year wearing a pink tutu (alongside his mother and often his two dogs-all wearing tutus as well) to raise awareness and money for this non-profit organization. He was inspired by and dedicated this endeavor to his Aunt Liya Khenkin, who sadly lost her fight in 2017. In his way, Jonathan wanted to thank them for helping her and countless others who are fighting or have fought this disease in all its forms including his late grandfather, Gena Baranovsky. Not only did Jonathan’s ATL Tutu Run help increase awareness in Atlanta, but in so doing raised over $3,700 for his effort.

Jonathan would like to thank all his family and friends for attending, supporting and celebrating this very special milestone. In addition, he would like to extend a special thank you to Rabbi Shuval-Weiner and Cantor Kassel for their support and guidance in the past year.

Cemetery Plot For Sale A former member has relocated out of state and owns the interment rights to plot 27C #2 in the Temple Beth Tikvah section of Arlington Memorial Park.
