RHONDA POVLOT, PRESIDENT As I am wri ng this ar cle there have been daily a acks on our Jewish people both here in the US and abroad. An semi sm was on a decline un l 2014 then took a drama c shi . Hate crimes against Jews have risen more than 60% since then. In NY alone the figure is 51% with 8 incidents occurring in the first 7 days of Chanukah 2019. In France, it has risen more than 70% and is increasing in London and other European countries. Holocaust denial has increased. Jews are becoming afraid to wear anything that signifies they are Jewish. They are going "underground". Now is the me to speak up, stand firm, speak out and act against An semi sm of any kind. Sadly, many Jewish people are becoming more and more concerned for their families, friends, community and themselves. I wear my Star of David, my Hamsa and let people know I am Jewish. We have not taken down our mezuzah. The threat is becoming increasingly real and coming closer to home. Please don't be a bystander. Ignorance and hatred have no place in our lives. Due to the rise in An ‐Semi sm here and abroad, Monday, January 6 has been designated by AJC ‐ American Jewish Commi ee as #JewishandProud Day. Wear your Judaism with pride that day. As 2020 begins, most of us will take a moment to reflect on 2019 and look forward to 2020. We will make plans or commitments to make the most of this coming new year. As we look back as a community, we can see changes. We look back fondly at all the special mes we had at various community programs, events, and services. We also remember our loved ones that are no longer with us. Looking towards this new year and new decade, some of us will make commitments to be er our health, our lives, and the lives of those around us. Let us also make a commitment this year to improve our religious and communal health here at TBT. Our congrega on seriously needs your help! We need people to a end services. We need to stand together with one another at all our services including our Shiva Minyanim. Let’s make the commitment to a end and give our community the support it deserves. The second area that greatly needs a dedicated commitment is to the financial health of our synagogue. I know you have heard this before, however, we are now at a place as I have said in my previous ar cles that truly demand your a en on and support. Your lay leadership is working hard to think “outside of the box” for raising needed funds. We have created a bare bones budget. Going into the budget process for 2020‐2021 has created great concern for us all. I will be frank, as I have many sleepless nights. We need your support. It goes without saying that without some strong fundraising and dona ons, we will not be able to con nue like this. Please help us with our annual campaign this year. The Board of Trustees has made a 100% commitment and is giving 40% over last year’s commitment. Without you, we have no community, we have no congrega on, and we have no future. Let us ensure that future genera ons have a home at TBT.

ECEC UPDATE—SHERI BAKER The Early Childhood Educa on Center would like to wish all of our families a very happy, healthy 2020! It is the start of a new year, and in the ECEC, we are already planning for the 2020‐2021 school year! Our school offers a diverse program that engages children in many different ways. From sensory explora on to large and small group ac vi es, it is here that our li le ones discover who they are. On February 14th at 10:00 am, we are hos ng a Pre‐K Open House for children who are 4 years of age by September 1st. Our Pre‐K curriculum paves the way for success in school and ensures a comfortable transi on to Kindergarten. We invite you and anyone you know that may be interested in our extraordinary Pre‐K program to check us out! We are proud to offer the ALE Fund scholarship for eligible Pre‐K families. The ALEF fund allows qualifying families to receive a free or significant tui on reduc on. I also want to take this me to welcome Linda Siegel as the permanent Early Childhood Educa on Center director beginning in June 2020. Linda has been around TBT for years, if not decades. She has been teaching preschool for more than 20 years and sent her youngest child to our Pre‐K even though she worked at a different local synagogue school. We were fortunate enough to welcome her as a teacher a year later. She is a beloved member of our staff and immensely loved by the students and parents. Linda is known for her treasured storytelling skills, and I can’t think of a day that I haven’t heard a child ask, “Ms. Linda, will you tell us a story?”. Not only is Linda treasured by the children, but every single parent adores her. As my year as the interim ECEC director comes to an end in May, and I am thrilled and confident that Linda Siegel is the right person to lead our school in 2020 and the future. Fondly,
RELIGIOUS SCHOOL UPDATE—SUZANNE HURWITZ A new year, a new chance for change and be erment. How fortunate that we, as Jews, have not one but two opportuni es each year to look back, look ahead, and strive to make our coming year be er? I’m excited for all we have coming up at TBT’s religious school this month, even with the limited number of days that school is in session. Just a few highlights: Our 3rd through 5th graders have been invited to The Cohen Home on January 12th to sing with Cantor Kassel at 2:00 PM. Our Tuesday Hebrew students will begin par cipa ng in tefillah as part of their midweek Hebrew experience. Our Monday night KiCKs students will con nue to be engaged and will con nue with their mitzvah project to benefit Camp Aurora. Our 6th and 7th grade students will take part in a program with Sojourn on the 26th. In addi on, we are star ng a paren ng book club that day in collabora on with JumpSpark. Please call me for more informa on if you are interested! I want to extend a huge thank you to our fabulous team of teachers who work hard to teach and connect with each one of our students. I am so grateful for their compassion, talents and willingness to go above and beyond. Welcome to the year 2020. They say that hindsight is 20/20, and that may be true. But we must also keep in mind another popular expression regarding 2020: The future is bright! Happy (secular) New Year.

YOUTH GROUP Save‐the‐date: Next month is HOTTY’s Camp Jenny Bingo Fundraiser! Before RSVP’ing to join us for the night, you might want to know what Camp Jenny is…Camp Jenny is a summer camp hosted by NFTY‐SAR over Memorial Day weekend at Camp Coleman in Cleveland, Georgia. The campers who a end Camp Jenny are from F.L. Stanton Elementary, a school in an impoverished are of Atlanta. The campers must meet certain character standards such as par cipa on in school and kindness towards others in order to go to Camp Jenny, where they enjoy the ac vi es and atmosphere of camp, as well as the love and a en on of their counselors, all of whom are NFTY‐ SAR teens. It costs $500 to send one camper to Camp Jenny. Last year we raised $2622 and sent five kids to Camp Jenny! This year we’re hoping to raise enough money to send six campers. So, mark your calendars to join us on February 29th at HOTTY’s Annual Camp Jenny Bingo Fundraiser! It’s a fun night for all ages, with dinner, bingo, lots of great prizes, and a live auc on. SOCIAL ACTION@TBT It Takes a Village: Support the Backpack Buddies at TBT We’re thrilled to announce that Temple Beth Tikvah is joining the Backpack Buddies program, to provide meals over the weekend for local children who face food insecurity. TBT will be partnering with Sawyer Road Elementary School in Marie a star ng in January and we’d love your gi s of food, me or funds. Donate Food Each backpack is designed to nourish one school‐aged child for a weekend: 6 meals plus snacks. You and your family can help by picking up an extra item or two whenever you’re at the grocery store. All items should be SINGLE SERVE (except proteins/rice) and NON‐PERISHABLE. Please be mindful of expira on dates! Shelf‐stable Milk ‐ 8 Ounce Boxes, unflavored preferred

SISTERHOOD Rosh Chodesh:
Shalom sisterhood and welcome to 2020!! Not much news to report as things tend to slow down during the holiday me, but the TBT members who ventured to Israel did not slow down, not by a long shot. With so many sights to see, so many interes ng folks to visit with, and with a wedding thrown in, it was truly a trip of a life me!!! Moving forward, we have a few programs on the books for the next few months....our joint program with Etz Chaim is sure to become a Sisterhood favorite and one we will repeat annually going forward! Please try to join us for this momentous event in February. There are s ll opportuni es to cook and/or serve the folks at the Zaban Shelter in April!! Ask me about this rewarding experience!! Sisterhood will join Men’s Club going forward in this very important mitzvah and we’ll make this an annual thing. So if you missed out this year, there is ALWAYS next year!
A Women’s Spirituality Group Led by Dr. Terry Segal Wednesday, January 8 7:00 PM Rosh Chodesh is the celebra on of the new moon and the new month, according to the Jewish calendar. Rosh Chodesh has long been recognized as a women’s holiday. In midrash Pirke DeRabbi Elezer, Chapter 45, we are told that in the incident of the Golden Calf, the women refused to relinquish their earnings to the men who were building the idol. As a reward, God gave them an extra holy day each month, free from work.
Details about our very enriching and successful Women’s Seder will be coming soon. Mark your calendars for Thursday April 2nd! That’s it for now!!

Noah is a seventh grader at The Davis Academy. He enjoys camping, cooking, hiking, basketball, video games, and hanging out with his friends. He is a Scout with Troop 1818 where he has hiked and camped along the Appalachian Trail, mountain biked through Hard Labor Creek Park and canoed around Lake Lanier. Noah is a regular volunteer for the TBT Family Promise program, staying overnight to play with the children of the families. Many of Noah’s Bar Mitzvah projects were community service projects including helping build a Sukkah for residents of the Cohen Home, a Gaga pit for preschoolers, and benches for a historic cemetery.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN The 2019‐2010 Annual Campaign is underway ! Our giving opportuni es offer something for everyone. In keeping with our mission, our fundraising ini a ves focus on several broad categories that support the work we do. Your gi (s) to one or more of these funds is greatly appreciated. General Fund– This goes to where the need is greatest and allows the Temple the most flexibility in direc ng your contribu on dollars.
Rabbi’s Discre onary Fund – Dona ons are used for charitable giving at the Rabbis’ discre on.
Building Fund‐ Dona ons are used to pay down the building debt.
Cantors’ Fund – Dona ons are used for charitable giving at the Cantor’s dis‐ cre on.
Annual Giving Campaign – The Annual Fund is a cri cal source of income to the Kehillat Chesed Fund– These funds are used to support individuals during Temple, helping us make up the difference between revenues from member‐ mes of need such as providing meals of consola on, and other acts of kind‐ ship dues and other fees, and our actual opera ng costs. ness. Temple Beth Tikvah Endowment Fund – The endowment helps to pay down the mortgage, and when completed will help to secure our congrega on’s significant program needs and ensure our future financial stability.
Tikkun Olam Fund – The purpose of this fund is to promote and support social jus ce and community service efforts, par cularly those that encourage giving and volunteering in partnership with our synagogue.
Preschool Enrichment Fund – This fund provides for staff development work‐ shops, parent educa on, enrichment specialists, and special equipment for the preschool.
Campership/Israel Fund– These monies are used to provide scholarships for children to a end summer camp, retreats, study programs or Israel experienc‐ es.
Michael Zalkin Memorial Library Fund‐ Dona ons are used to purchase books and other library improvements.
Prayer Book Fund– Used to purchase books used for the purpose of con‐ duc ng a service (Siddurim, Chumashim, Shiva minyan books, etc)
Torah Fund‐ Dona ons provide for the maintenance and upkeep of our Torah scrolls and dressings.
