A Reform Congregation Embracing Our Jewish Tradition

Breaking the Stigma of Mental Illness - An Update My husband and I have a running joke every December 22, one day after the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Every year, for the past 25 years, he wakes up and says, “it doesn’t seem as dark as it was yesterday, it’s definitely brighter out today!”

Bringing forth light to banish the darkness is certainly a major trope in our Jewish tradition, and one that is appropriate for this month’s Kol Tikvah article.

On Kol Nidrei I talked about just this- illuminating that which has lurked in the dark for far too long in our Jewish community, the stigma associated with Mental Illness. I challenged us to consider the ways we might break through that darkness, and light up the paths to better understanding of each others’ struggles, in order that we might make our community a true House of Hope for all. At that time I invited anyone interested in exploring how we can better understand and support those who struggle with mental illness to reach out to speak with me.

The past months have been filled with many cups of tea and one-on-one discussions.

Tear filled conversations with congregants who either struggle themselves or have family members who live with mental health struggles- with professional mental health experts, and kind-hearted people passionately invested in bringing more love and openness to our community.

With these stories in my head and heart, I convened a meeting of interested OTP (outside the Perimeter) rabbis to discuss ways that we might share resources and provide a stronger network of support for our collective communities.

From these discussions, we have determined that first steps include the following actions: 1) An open sharing of resources, support groups and programs presently taking place in our various congregations, in order to make it easier for all our members to find meetings.

2) The creation of a collaborative event to better understand Mental Health and Addiction Issues. TBT will host this inaugural program February 5-6, 2018, in partnership with Congregation Etz Chaim, Temple Kehillat Chaim, Dor Tamid and Gesher L’Torah.

BaMidbar, the first Jewish Wilderness Therapy Program in the country, will facilitate the program. (Event details to follow).

3) We then hope to deepen the conversation in 2018 with programs by experts from Atlanta area organizations such as Berman Center, JF&CS, Baken and other like groups.

This is only a start, but I believe that it’s a good start.

Living with a Broken Heart A Bereavement and Loss Support Group

If you have a loved one struggling with drugs, alcohol or associated mental health issues, it's difficult to know where to turn. Families Anonymous, a national organization, is a parallel recovery group similar to Al Anon specifically for family members of those struggling. The Roswell group of F.A. meets every Monday night from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. at Temple Beth Tikvah (usually in the oneg room). It's a welcoming group that has helped hundreds of members over the past seven years. Notes from Cantor Kassel “SHABBAT TZEDEK / SABBATH OF JUSTICE” in commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Friday night, January 12th at 8:00 PM

“There is nothing new under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9) “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” (Jean-Baptiste Alphse Karr) There is truth in these sentiments, but it is not the whole truth. We can effect change in the world and are indebted to those with the gift of inspiration through word and deed such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” (Martin Luther King, Jr.) Please join us on January 12th for our Erev Shabbat service in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr with special music and readings to inspire us to actions in the pursuit of justice.

“SHABBAT SHIRAH / SABBATH OF SONG” Friday night, January 26th at 8:00 PM

with special guest speaker, Cantor Josee Wolff, D. Min. Aside from being a cantorial classmate and dear friend, Cantor Wolff is an adjunct faculty member at the School of Sacred Music, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York and a faculty member of the Cantorial School at the Abraham Geiger Kolleg in Berlin Germany. Previously she was the Director of the Department of Synagogue Music of the URJ and has served as Cantor and Spiritual Leader for various congregations. A native of The Netherlands, Cantor Wolff is a former Board Member of the ACC (American Conference of Cantors), co-author of The Art of Torah Cantillation (volumes 1 & 2), and has contributed to numerous other publications including the WRJ Women’s Torah Commentary. Cantor Wolff received her Doctorate of Ministry degree from Hebrew Union College and volunteers with Disaster Chaplaincy Services of New York.

What better way to celebrate Shabbat Shirah than with the music of our choir and Cantor Wolff in addition to hearing about her reflections on Reform Jewish music.

B’nai Mitzvah Lindsey Mollie Gergans will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on January 27, 2017. Lindsey is the daughter of Michele and Steve Gergans and sister to Matthew. She is a 7 th grade honor student at Elkins Pointe Middle School where she enjoys learning Japanese. Lindsey is an active softball player on the 04’ Alpharetta Fire and she enjoys playing Milton feeder basketball. She loves spending time with her friends and her dogs Coco and Rocky. She is excited to celebrate this milestone with friends and family.

A Little Perspective all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and aggressive mind. All things are mortal, but the Jew. All other forces pass, but he remains. What is the secret of his immortality?*

Part of the job description of a synagogue President ends up being that of Chief Worrier. It might involve “small” things like member counts, budgets, and contracts. Or, it might involve worrying about big things like the state of anti-Semitism, the polarization of views about Israel, and the pressures of assimilation. One could easily lapse into feeling that both Judaism and the Jewish people are under severe threat, and that we might be one of the last links in a 3,000+ year-old chain. Of course, many others beside synagogue Presidents worry about such things.

Leo Tolstoy, author of War and Peace and a deeply religious Russian Orthodox Christian, wrote this in 1908:

It’s helpful, then, to pick up a book about Jewish history to re-ground ourselves, to get a little perspective. This feeling about impending disaster is not new. Between expulsions, persecution, being conquered, and the pull of ‘modernity’, we’ve had this feeling that Judaism might be on its last legs for a good part of that 3,000+ year history. And yet here we are. The very fact that Jews exist as a nation today is nothing short of miraculous. Can you think of any other civilization or group who has survived intact through this length of recorded time? By any historical measure the Jewish people should have disappeared long ago. But we haven’t. As one who is still wrestling with the concept of God, I have to admit that this sounds like pretty strong evidence pointing to the existence of a God who, at least to some degree, acts in history.

The Jew is the emblem of eternity. He whom neither slaughter nor torture of thousands of years could destroy, he whom neither fire, nor sword, nor Inquisition was able to wipe off the face of the earth. He who was the first to produce the oracles of God. He who has been for so long the guardian of prophecy and has transmitted it to the rest of the world. Such a nation cannot be destroyed. The Jew is as everlasting as eternity itself.* My takeaway is that we should feel comfortable dialing down our sense of worry just a bit, and trust that there is an “invisible hand” (God) helping us to ensure the continuity of the Jewish people.

That’s not to say that we don’t have work to do. After all, there are two sides to this covenant thing. As Jews we should work with our synagogue to hold up our end of the bargain, that is, to learn and cling to our beliefs so as to bring more Jewish values and Jewish living into our families, community, and larger world, and thus be a ‘light unto the nations’.

Others before us have commented on this phenomenon. Mark Twain, a.k.a. Samuel Clemens and an avowed agnostic, wrote this in 1899 in Harper’s Magazine: The Egyptian, the Babylonian, and the Persian rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, then faded to dream-stuff and passed away. The Greek and Roman followed, made a vast noise, and they are gone. Other peoples have sprung up and held their torch high for a time, but it burned out and they sit in twilight now or have vanished. The Jew saw them all, beat them

How can we at Temple Beth Tikvah, specifically in our educational programs, help celebrate each person as being created B’tzelem Elohim? One way is to celebrate what makes each of us unique and to help each person in the exploration of what makes one unique. There is a story of a coin maker who proudly crafts each coin the same, a dime is a dime is a dime. God, however, is even more talented than the coin maker because God crafts each of us differently. Yes, we are all human and yes, we are all created in God’s image, and yet each of us has something new to bring to the world to make it a better place.

Another way we do this is to teach using a variety of different modalities as we learn in different ways. An example of how we teach using different modalities will be seen on Sunday, January 28, when we have our next kindergarten – seventh grade experiential day. On this date we will be celebrating and learning about Tu B’Shevat, the

May this new year bring us closer to the wonder in nature, the wonder in each other, and the wonder in ourselves.

The Fourth Annual Marty Soniker Bourbon & BBQ event is happening on Cinco de Mayo, and the Men's Club is looking for silent auction donations to help raise money for the TBT Camp Scholarship Fund. Happy New Year to you! Sisterhood has been very busy planning our winter and spring happenings. Knit and Nosh has added a new project this year. A beautiful and lovely blanket will be made by our very own Sisterhood knitters, with individual blocks uniquely created and pieced together so artistically. We will also continue to make our scarves to give to the homeless women at Rebecca’s Tent, a shelter program sponsored by Congregation Shearith Israel. Please join us Sunday, January 7th, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. to learn the crafts of knitting and crocheting as our “inhouse” teachers are eager to share their talents.

Winter Doldrums can be an issue during our colder months. Shaina Gordon, psychotherapist, will be presenting a dynamic and informative discussion on how to beat the symptoms of depression and anxiety in order to pursue your daily and future goals. I hope to see you for a great discussion, Thursday, January 25th, at 7:30 p.m. in the conference room.

I am grateful to the congregation for providing me the opportunity to attend what I hope will be a helpful and meaningful national conference.

1. Food items may be vegetarian, dairy, or fish (including tuna fish and egg dishes) but may not contain meat or seafood (shellfish, un-kosher fish, etc.) ingredients of any kind or in any amount.

2. Prepare sufficient amounts of entrée, salads, or side dishes to feed ten adults.

3. Food items must be served in disposal containers so nothing is left at TBT. 4. Please take your leftovers, utensils, and containers home with you.

The Madans/Janes Family Dave and I joined TBT before the birth of our first son and have had the honor of having my sibling, parents and several cousins become members of TBT with us. All four of my parents' grandchildren became a bar mitzvah at Temple Beth Tikvah.

My definition of religion is synonymous with family and I am proud to say we have had three generations of active community members. Growing up, my parents were active members of their synagogue and after joining us at TBT, my dad continued his commitment to the Jewish community and volunteered for the Sunshine committee. Our children, Jacob and Nathan, were enthusiastic members of the junior choir. I was on the BOE and assisted in planning a multitude of activities including the High Holiday Experience, 5th & 6th grade retreats, Purim Carnivals and even teaching Sunday School, while Dave was an active volunteer for all the programs I was involved with.

We have been so blessed to be a part of such an open and welcoming community under such dedicated leadership. We are honored to stand with so many multi-generational families of TBT. 11
