Moving into 2017 It’s January and that’s the time for secular New Year’s resolutions; cleaning out the shmutz, getting reorganized, and starting on the right foot.

My New Year’s resolution is to assure you that YOU matter, and that I promise you that I will respond to you when you contact me, but I need your help as well. Please, if you send an email to ME, and you do not hear back from me, PLEASE call the office at 770-642-0434 and leave a message with Michelle Leder, clergy assistant, so that I know that you are reaching out.

Here at Temple Beth Tikvah, we pride ourselves on being a place of warmth and matterness. As your rabbi, I strive to be here for you…to practice the Jewish value of Hachnasat Orchim- being a welcoming presence. My door is (almost) always open, there is ample chocolate in the living room and I pour tea (or something stronger) if you need it.

As we move into 2017, let’s not let the black holes of the internet deter us all from continuing to build a strong and sacred relationship---together.

In the 18 months since becoming your rabbi, I have had the great privilege to sit and talk with so many wonderful people, and 2017 offers more opportunity for continued relationship building. I look forward to joining those who responded to my challenge to host a Torah in a Prius event in your home in 2017 as well as deepening the connection with all who have signed up to participate in the Passover congregational retreat in April and those who will travel to Israel with me this coming June.

If we haven’t had the chance yet to sit and get to know one another, please give me a call, I so would like to deepen our relationship!

In this vein, I must share a recent discovery. It has come to my attention that there have been emails sent to the synagogue, and through our web site, that have not reached me. This is deeply troubling to me, and our synagogue staff and volunteers are diligently working on remedying the situation.

Camp Shabbat last month was great! From roasting s'mores outside at the preneg to the song session it really got us in the camp spirit!

During the service we heard from some of our teens who attend Camp Coleman, Camp Barney, and URJ Six Points. Thanks to Abby Limor, Katie Hurwitz, Leah Faupel, Parker Salinas, and Drew Baker for sharing a little about their camps and what makes them keep going back summer after summer. We wanted to share Drew's words with you: People can feel G-d in different ways. Some say that whether it be in a certain situation, when you are around certain people, or when you are in a certain location, they feel a heightened sense of an upper being. Camp is a place where I feel that sense. The cause of this feeling is unexplainable like much of camp and G-d itself; but part of me thinks that it's simply because there, I am surrounded by people with a commonality, we’re all Jewish. At camp I make bonds with people like myself and for me that leads to the feeling of something higher or more powerful. That feeling of community can do so much for all of us.

Hebrew Naming Service Naming Service to take place on Shabbat Shemot Friday, January 20 at 6:30 p.m.

What’s in a name? Hebrew names are not only a reflection of who we are, but also a statement of who we would like to be. However, there are many in our community who either were not given a Hebrew name or have forgotten theirs. On Saturday, January 21, we will begin reading the book of Exodus. The Hebrew name for this Torah portion is Shemot, which translated means “names.” During the Friday evening service, which begins at 6:30 p.m., we will be having a special naming service for any Jewish member of our congregation who would like a Hebrew name - no matter what your age. A certificate will be given to each person and the name will be recorded for posterity in our Temple records.

Notes from Cantor Kassel “SHABBAT TZEDEK / SABBATH OF JUSTICE” in commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Friday night, January 13th at 8:00 PM One of the primary strengths of Judaism is that it acknowledges the continual need to be reminded of what is truly important, thus the many rituals that are associated with ethical teachings and commandments. In that same vein, it is important that we continue to remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his impactful leadership of the African-American Civil Rights Movement and its espousal of non-violence in the pursuit of civil liberties. There is always more to learn.

B’not Mitzvah Madison Nathan will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on January 7, 2017. Madison is the daughter of Ted and Melanie Nathan and sister to Morgan. She is in 7th grade at Hightower Trail Middle School where she enjoys playing flute in the band. For Madison's Mitzvah project, she collected school supplies for students in need.

Marlee Greenspan will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on January 7, 2017. Marlee is the daughter of Mark and Karen Greenspan and sister to Lacie. Marlee is currently a 7th grader at Crabapple Middle School in Roswell. Marlee loves school, music and dance. She has a wonderful network of friends both in middle school and her dance studio. She is a competitive dancer with Studio and Company 23 where she finds her passion in ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary and hip hop styles.

Marlee chose to dedicate her time and services to help Dream Weavers Inc. This is a charity that assists children entering the foster care program in Georgia.

Arden King will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on January 21, 2017. Arden is the daughter of Rachael and Jared King of Alpharetta, and sister of Hudson. Arden is a 7th grader at Haynes Bridge Middle School where she is an honor roll student and in Jr. Beta. Arden also enjoys acrobatics, swimming and playing lacrosse at URJ Six Points Sports Academy. Arden has been volunteering with Furkids by working with the dogs at Sadie’s Place. She also held a Bake Sale/Cake Sale to raise money for this cause. She is pictured with her favorite Furkid, Bella Blues. Arden is excited to share this milestone with her friends and family.

Enhanced Security Installed at Building Entryways As we all know too well, synagogues around the world have had to increase security in the wake of troubling incidents over the years. While we are not aware of any specific threats against our congregation, we continually seek ways to improve the safety of TBT congregants, staff and guests.

Earlier this year, at the recommendation of the TBT House and Security Committees – which includes law enforcement professionals and independent security experts, the Board of Trustees approved installation of state-of-the-art clear security film on all entrance doors and side-light windows. Installation, which was funded through our annual capital budget (and by extension our Annual Campaign) was completed in November.

Benefits of this New Security Measure. The security film offers several benefits, including providing: Additional time for those inside the building to seek safety in the event of an intrusion attempt.

Supplemental defense against break-ins.

Protection against flying glass and debris during severe weather or a bomb blast.

Religious School Research has shown repeatedly that the experiences children have within their families provide the solid cornerstone on which all of their subsequent Jewish learning and informal experience rely. For this reason, family education is an integral component of your children’s experience in Religious School. Our 6 th grade families created the yads the students will be using for their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs for their family education day. A yad, literally, "hand," is a Jewish ritual pointer, popularly known as a Torah pointer, used by the reader to follow the text during the Torah reading from the parchment Torah scrolls. Beyond its practical usage, the yad ensures that the parchment is not touched during the reading. There are several reasons for this: handling the parchment renders one ritually impure and the often-fragile parchment is easily damaged. Moreover, the vellum parchment does not absorb ink so touching the scroll with fingers will damage the lettering. A yad can be made of any number of materials, though silver is common, especially used in crowning the yad. The yad is often shaped like a long rod, capped by a small hand with its index finger pointing from it.

Over the next several months, we will be hosting a series of family education opportunities so that you and your children can learn together and begin building those crucial Jewish family connections and memories. On Sunday, January 15th, we invite our 3rd graders and their families to participate in their family education program. The day will begin with Tefilah in the sanctuary at 9:35AM. It is so wonderful to hear a sanctuary full of young voices singing and praying each Sunday morning. After Tefilah we will meet in the social hall and spend the morning learning with the Rabbi as well as doing a special project.

After the break I will be listening to all the 4 th and 5th grade students as they read to me from their textbooks. Please make sure your children continue to study during their breaks so their Hebrew is fresh in their minds for the New Year.

Youth Group HOTTY (9-12th Grade) From Rebecca Torino, HOTTY’s Communications Vice-President: HOTTY got into the fall spirit this past November. We got our cowboy (and cowgirl) on with our first ever HOTTY Hoedown and with caramel apples, dancing, rockin’ music and, of course, cornhole, it was an event to remember. Also in November was NFTY’s Fall Kallah hosted by SCRUFY of Temple Sinai. During the weekend, participants from HOTTY and youth groups from all over the SAR region were able to learn about different social action and justice issues, not to mention participate in a “Lack of Talent” talent show on Saturday night and hang out with their friends for an amazing weekend. Lastly, HOTTY had their monthly lounge night and with the Thanksgiving theme, it sure was a gobbling good night! This month we’re headed to Wylie, SC for NFTY-SAR Winter Kallah. Good luck to Hannah Restler and Daniel Marks who are both running for Regional Board. We’re so proud of both of you. TBT Younger Youth Groups We’ve had a great turnout so far for our younger youth group events! Many families joined us for our Bonim Chanukah Party in December. We ate latkes, played Bingo, and made Chanukah crafts. It was a great way to start the celebrating! Our 6 th & 7th Graders came with their families to our social action event day. We made cookies and packed lunches for the women at the Shearith Israel Night Shelter. And, our Gesher kids met up with other 3-5th Graders at East Cobb Park for a Temple vs.

Temple Quidditch tournament! It was a blast! Hidden Blessings in Moments of Sadness Third, you never know how your presence with a mourner will actually be appreciated.

Sometimes you don’t have to say a thing – holding a hand or giving a hug says it all and is exactly what’s needed. Sometimes you’re just there to listen as the mourner talks to relieve him/herself of some of the burden.

Sometimes your presence simply helps the mourner feel that they’re not alone. In any event, rest assured that your visit to the mourner is greatly appreciated.

One of the unwritten traditions of being TBT’s president is attending as many shiva minyanim at our members’ homes as possible. While I happen to know a good number of the members with whom I’ve visited, there have also been times when I didn’t know the family at all. I used to approach these visits with a degree of trepidation, anticipating some awkward discomfort on either their part or my part or both. What I have since come to learn is that the value of the visit vastly outweighs any momentary apprehension. Indeed, I feel we would be doing a tremendous act of chesed (kindness) to our fellow congregants if more of us would consider attending a shiva minyan. Here’s what those visits have taught me:

One of my favorite authors, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, writes the following:

First, people truly appreciate the caring concern expressed by their TBT community via the simple act of participating in a shiva minyan, especially when the visitor is not someone with whom they have a close relationship. The fact that an otherwise unknown person would take the time to ‘be there’ for them and to help ensure that a minyan (at least 10 Jewish adults) is present for Kaddish becomes a great source of comfort for the mourner. It’s one of the best things we can do to put into practice TBT’s values around being a warm and caring community.

The obligation of nichum aveilim, comforting mourners, falls on all adult Jews… It is particularly important to visit mourners who are receiving few visitors, perhaps because…they have a small circle of friends, or the deceased was not well known.1 Attending a shiva minyan gives you the opportunity to fulfill an important Jewish obligation while providing care and comfort to those feeling loneliness and pain. That’s a wonderful gift. As you think about your membership in this sacred community we call Temple Beth Tikvah, I urge you to consider participating in a few more shiva minyanim over the coming year.

Second, a number of our members don’t have a large circle of friends or family that are in the Atlanta area. On more than one occasion I have found myself being the only TBT member (other than the rabbi or cantor) who participated in the shiva minyan. This has caused me to take special notice of condolence emails for people who I don’t know – I’d like to ensure that there is at least some representation at the minyan by the mourner’s TBT community.

Join Men's Club in the oneg room on January 29th at 10 AM for “The Book of Numbers - A Super Bowl Stats Perspective” with TBT's very own Dr. Rick Winer You might be familiar with Rick Winer chanting Torah from the Book of Numbers for most of Temple Beth Tikvah’s 30 years. Rick has also been compiling numbers as a statistician at football games for over 45 years and has been involved in over 20 Super Bowls. Just one week before Super Bowl LI, Rick will discuss what goes into preparing to do the stats and then providing the stats and records in the broadcast booth to the announcers. In addition, Rick will review some Jewish Super Bowl facts in advance of the big game.

And while you're noshing on bagels and coffee, pick some Super Bowl Squares in anticipation of the Big Game with partial proceeds to benefit the TBT Camp Scholarship Fund.

Happy New Year from Sisterhood! We have been busy planning winter and spring events for you to enjoy with this change of season. The Rabbi will be leading a most interesting book review Thursday, 1/12/17 at 7 p.m. in the oneg room. Please read quickly (!) and come to discuss The Last Woman Standing, by Thelma Adams. You are sure to enjoy this evening.

Friday, 1/13/17 at 7 p.m. will be most congenial as we have wine, cheese and mingling before Shabbat services.

Please come and meet fellow TBT members as we start Shabbat with fellowship. What a great way to start your Shabbat experience. I look forward to seeing you there.

Many thanks are in order to all of our knitters and crotcheters who donated hand crafted scarves to Shearith Israel Night Shelter (Rebecca’s Tent), The Open Door shelter, and Community Advanced Practice Nurses, Inc. homeless program for women and children. Gift bags included a beautiful scarf, toiletries, fleece blanket, and coffee mug. A special thank you to Terry Carasick, coordinator. Please join us as we continue to knit and crotchet scarves, blankets, and other needed items this winter and spring. Our next meeting will be Sunday, 1/22/17 at 9:45 a.m. in the conference room. In early February Alicia Sher will be leading a most informative session on financial planning. This is specifically focused on teaching the basics about 401K, 403B, stock market investments, etc., and is generally geared to learn the “lingo” associated with these retirement funds. Please plan to attend Sunday, 2/5/17 at 9:45 a.m. in the oneg room and experience a fun and entertaining way to become confident in managing your financial affairs. This program is partnering with Adult Education to broaden our scope of attendees and enlighten us all!

Six part program. All texts and commentaries will be in English. We will start with the First Tractate of the Talmud: Berachot - 'Blessings,' specifically the rationale and specifics of the Sh'ma and its blessings.

If you are interested in the logic of the arguments of the rabbis in Talmud, and how they crafted their opinions on a variety of subjects, then this class is for you. NO Hebrew/Aramaic or previous knowledge is necessary.

Do you love to hike? The Hiking Group is for people who want to share in an afternoon hike as part of a Shabbat experience. The hikes will take place once or twice a month at one of the many beautiful National Recreation Areas along the Chattahoochee River and will last for one to two hours. Each hike will bring the group together around a theme or reading to inspire our walk. The group is intended for people who want to extend or broaden the restful aspects of Shabbat through an informal activity outside of traditional services.
