A Reform Congregation Embracing Our Jewish Tradition

A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SHUVAL-WEINER: On the Road with TBT In late December over the festival of Hanukkah, 36 souls from Temple Beth Tikvah made pilgrimage to Israel. For many this was their first opportunity to fulfill the mitzvah of “Walking the Land”. (B.T. Ketubbot 111a).

Our traveling group consisted of teens and retirees, families and empty nesters. We began the trip with two singles, who during the course of the trip tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony in the Galilee.

With Eli, our incredible driver, and Yoni, the world’s greatest guide, our band of travelers sojourned through the ancient and modern country, meeting peoples of every culture and religion who call Israel home. The group experienced the incredible spirit of the early Jewish pioneers and visionaries, Theodore Herzl, David Ben Gurion, and Yitzhak Rabin. Following the emotionally challenging afternoon spent at Yad Vashem, rebirth could be found in the moving recreations of historic events at the Palmach museum, Rabin Center and the astounding secret under ground Ammunitions Factory that helped to win the War of Independence in 1948.

Hands-on experiences included learning about Bedouin culture in a desert encampment and dining at the table of a Druze activist working for women’s rights in her patriarchal community on the Syrian border. We drank cinnamon tea in the home of an Arab peace worker and talked with Reform rabbis working to ignite a religious renewal within the secular Israeli segments of society. We spent the morning at the famous Bialik-Rogozin School and learned of the plight of Sudanese asylum seekers who live in extreme poverty in the shadows of Tel-Aviv’s skyscrapers.

Following a military briefing at Mt. Bental on Israel’s Northern Border with Lt. Col. (Ret.) Sarit Zehavi the group was invited to tour the Israeli-Syrian border in ATVs. A stop was made to pay tribute to hero Eli Cohen z”l. After snapping pictures of the beautiful snow-capped Mt. Hermon, elevation 7,336 ft., we traveled back to the Galilee to walk the streets of the mystical city of Tzefat, the home of Jewish mysticism and Kabbalah. While in the southern region we climbed Masada and took a winter-time float in the Dead Sea, 1,412 ft below sea level, the lowest point on the earth.

For many in our group one of the most priceless experiences was the ability to kindle the Hanukkah Menorah in Israel. Not one night, but every evening of the festival one could see Hanukiyot in most every apartment window, shop, museum, on the tops of buildings and even on street corners; everywhere one went, you knew it was Hanukkah! Driving out of Jerusalem and through the area called Modiin, one could imagine the Maccabees running through the hills, on their mission to secure the freedom for the Israelite people to live in dignity and freedom…this is our morasha, our heritage we received from them to this today, to proudly live out our Judaism wherever we choose to make our home.

This trip provided us many opportunities for growth and wonderment. From the varied programmatic options, and hearing from so many differing cultural voices, one came away with a better understanding of the bold spirit and great resilience of the Israeli people. At the same time, seeing first hand the struggles that continually emerge when attempting to maintain both a Jewish majority and Democratic nation. All of this helped us to better appreciate that nothing is as simple as it seems from the outside and that every aspect of Israeli life is “very complicated”.

It is hard to describe all of the emotions and feelings, without actually being with us, but here are a few quotes from some of the group: “it was the trip of a lifetime”, “I feel closer to my people and to my TBT community after this amazing trip”, “we came away with the understanding that things aren’t as simple as they seem on the news-everything about Israel is very complicated” ,“I felt immediately at home here”, “the Israeli breakfasts are unbelievable!!”, “ I can’t wait to return.”

New Temple Beth Tikvah travel is already in the works. I hope that you will be able to join in on a future trip to Israel or elsewhere in the world with your TBT family.

RHONDA POVLOT, PRESIDENT There is always so much going on at Temple Beth Tikvah! It would seem redundant for me to rename each and everything in the President's article each month that you can find throughout the newsletter, on our website, in our emails, in our Next 10 Days, Upcoming Events and in our flyers. There is so much to do to and join.

I just wanted to say how very fortunate I feel to have "grown up" in such an engaging community. I have raised my children in a loving community. They consider this building home. It is safe to them. I picture growing older here. We have beautiful friends who have been on this journey with us. We have friends who are no longer with us, but have left us with precious memories and we share their stories, some with laughter and some through tears.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to find these things at TBT, please reach out to me, or someone in the office to let them know you want to get connected. I don't mean as a volunteer necessarily, but just as a friend for coffee. We will try and connect you with someone ASAP. It's ok if you are a little shy, truthfully, I am too. We are a community. WE are here. .

ECEC UPDATE—SHERI BAKER & LINDA SIEGEL Although it is just the beginning of the new calendar year, we are already planning for the 2020-2021 school year! Our school offers a diverse program that engages children in many different ways from 18 months of age through Pre-K. On Friday, February 14th, we are hosting a Pre-K Open House for our rising 4 and 5-yearolds. We take pride knowing our Pre-K curriculum paves the way for success and ensures a confident start in Kindergarten. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL UPDATE—SUZANNE HURWITZ It’s hard to believe it’s already February! Where has half the school year gone?

This month we will finish out the Hebrew month of Shevat and begin the month of Adar. Adar brings both the silliness and important lessons of Purim, but Shevat has something wonderful to offer as well: The 15 th day of Shevat, Tu B’Shevat! This “new year of the trees” is often described as the Israeli arbor day. While its biblical roots served practical purposes, it is now set aside to remind us of the importance of taking care of our environment. This year, Tu B’Shevat falls on February 10th.

There are many tree idioms that, in my mind, relate to Jewish learning. With the weeks of school going by so quickly and each one being so busy, it is so important to see the forest for the trees. Our teachers are focused on their students and making sure their lessons have clear-cut goals and objectives. They plan their days include time to discuss and process and time to connect with one another and their teaching modalities are varied and engaging. Concurrently, we keep in mind the larger goals of instilling Jewish pride, Jewish knowledge, and Jewish community into our students.

They say that the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, but the second best time is now. Our students will be planting parsley (that will be ready for use at your Passover seder in April) in observance of Tu B’Shevat We will be learning about our connection to Israel through tasting many wonderful fruits that grow on trees in our homeland.

Another common idiom, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, applies to what goes on in our community as well. Get involved at TBT and your children will follow suit! I am so excited that TBT’s parenting book club has taken off, Backpack Buddies is going strong with student involvement, and our third grade parents will be joining us for a family education program – all during religious school. So much goes on at TBT, and we want you to be involved. Furthermore, it affects generations to come, for our families and for our greater community.

Finally, we are so glad you decided – whether it was thirty years or three months ago – to put down your roots at TBT. Chag Sameach Tu B’Shevat!

YOUTH GROUP Several years ago, HOTTY had a Super Sloppy event. This event is pretty much how it sounds – think, shaving cream, slip n’ slides, water balloons, Crisco! The teens had a blast, so many smiles and laughing. My favorite part of the event? The fact that not a single teen was on their cell phone.

They didn’t want to get them dirty, so they left them all inside the building. It’s rare these days to have an event where everyone is included and participating, looking at and interacting solely with the other people there, in other words, being truly present in the moment (FYI adults, this doesn’t just apply to teens!) Turns out, I’m not the only one who appreciates that. At our mid-year HOTTY Board retreat, one of the HOTTY Board members made it his goal this semester to get teens off of their cell phone, to “unplug” and be present.

We have come up with an idea we want to try, but we need a little help. Here’s the plan: Every Monday night at TBT Kicks, we will ask the teens to turn in their cell phones during dinner and class. I am looking for donors who would donate $1 for every cell phone that gets turned in that night. The money raised that night would go towards a charity of the donor’s or teens’ choice.

We estimate the amount to be between $30-$50 each evening. If you are willing to be a donor for one of the Monday nights, please email Bobbee at youth@bethtikvah.com.

YOUTH GROUP

ATLANTA KESHER TEEN ENGAGEMENT FELLOWSHIP The Atlanta Kesher Teen Engagement Fellowship, an exciting new peer- to- peer engagement opportunity for Jewish teens in grades 1012 offered by the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ). The 15 fellows participating in 2019-20 represent 12 high schools, 6 synagogues, and 11 zip codes across the metro Atlanta area.

Temple Beth Tikvah’s teen participants are Lola Bessoff, Adam Boehm, Katie Hurwitz and Sophie Wilson.

Funded in part by a JumpSpark grant through the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta, it is created for the busy teen and allows them the to create their own schedules and strengthen time management skills. Teens will develop a variety of practical business, social, and leadership skills throughout the fellowship and receive expert mentoring and support to create meaningful Jewish engagement for their peers. At the end they receive a $200 stipend for all their hard work!

I got involved with the Kesher fellowship because I believe that it will help bring more Jewish teens into the post-Bar/Bat mitzvah Jewish community that so many people are missing out on. I really liked that the fellowship would be more personal, and less like a youth group because people are much more likely to seek out more Jewish experiences if they have made a personal connection with another Jewish teen their age. I have really enjoyed being involved with multiple Jewish teen organizations, and I didn't want other people to miss that opportunity.

The fellows are tasked with planning three small events (3-10 people) throughout the school year. These events include things, like a Shabbat dinner, Havdalah hike, or a philanthropic father and son basketball game. The idea is to create small events relating to -Sophie Wilson Judaism that have large impacts on the teens who aren’t as engaged in Jewish life in Atlanta.

SOCIAL ACTION@TBT It Takes a Village: Support the Backpack Buddies at TBT We’re thrilled to announce that Temple Beth Tikvah is joining the Backpack Buddies program, to provide meals over the weekend for local children who face food insecurity. TBT began partnering with Sawyer Road Elementary School in Marietta and we’d love your gifts of food, time or funds.

Donate Food Each backpack is designed to nourish one school-aged child for a weekend: 6 meals plus snacks. You and your family can help by picking up an extra item or two whenever you’re at the grocery store. All items should be SINGLE SERVE (except proteins/rice) and NON-PERISHABLE. Please be mindful of expiration dates!

Rosh Chodesh has long been recognized as a women’s holiday. In midrash Pirke DeRabbi Elezer, Chapter 45, we are told that in the incident of the Golden Calf, the women refused to relinquish their earnings to the men who were building the idol. As a reward, God gave them an extra holy day each month, free from work.

TU B’SHEVAT Tu B’Shevat, the "New Year of the Trees," is observed on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat.

Tu B’Shevat is not mentioned in the Torah. Scholars believe the holiday was originally an agricultural festival, corresponding to the beginning of spring in Israel. But a critical historical event helped Tu B’Shevat evolve from a simple celebration of spring to a commemoration of our connection to the land of Israel. After the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. and the exile that followed, many of the exiled Jews felt a need to bind themselves symbolically to their former homeland. Tu B’Shevat served in part to fill that spiritual need. Jews used this time each year to eat a variety of fruits and nuts that could be obtained from Israel. The practice, a sort of physical association with the land, continued for many centuries.

The 16th- and 17th-century kabbalists (mystics) of Israel elaborated on those customs, creating a ritual for Tu B’Shevat somewhat similar to the Passover seder. On erev Tu B’Shevat, they would gather in their homes for a 15-course meal, each course being one of the foods associated with the land. Between courses, they would read from an anthology called P'ri Eitz Hadar (The Fruit of the Goodly Tree), a compilation of passages on trees drawn from the Bible, the Talmud, and the mystical Zohar.

Today, Tu B’Shevat has become more of an environmental holiday: a day to remind us of the Jewish duty to care for the natural world, and a tree-planting festival for both Israelis and Jews throughout the world. Much of the credit for the great joy and spirit of the holiday is a direct result of the important work of the Jewish National Fund, or JNF (sometimes also known by its Hebrew name, Keren Kayemet L’Yisrael, or KKL).

Historically, JNF emphasized the importance of planting trees in Israel as part of working the land, and the organization revived the holiday of Tu B’Shevat to be about tree-

Are you interested in expanding your TBT Community? You should consider joining a Chavurah group. We have new groups forming now as well as existing groups looking for a few new people.

We’re seeking to create new Chavurah groups for all ages and family situations. Young families. Teenage families. No kids. Empty nesters. Singles. Retirees.

Allow me to answer a few Chavurah questions for you.

What is a TBT Chavurah group?

It’s a group of TBT members who gather on a regular basis (typically monthly or every other month) to socialize and build friendships with fellow members. We have found they work best my bringing people together who are at a similar stage of life.

What do TBT Chavurah groups do?

That is entirely up to the group. You can choose to socialize at dinners or fun events, come together to celebrate holidays or life’s momentous events, have a discussion about a timely Jewish topic, and more. There are no rules. All we suggest is that you get together at least once every other month.

Is their a cost for Chavurah groups?

Not even a shekel. We see Chavurah groups as a great way to help build your Temple Beth Tikvah community.

How do I sign up?

It’s so easy. Send me an email at brianrubenstein@yahoo.com and just let me know the stage of life you and/or your family are in. From there, we’ll help put a group together for you.

Can two or more families/couples/people sign up together to be in the same Chavurah group?

Absolutely! If you already know a few people who want to get together to form the foundation for a Chavurah group, that is great. We’ll help support your group and assist you in finding some additional members if that’s what you’re seeking.

Our giving opportunities offer something for everyone. In keeping with our mission, our fundraising initiatives focus on several broad categories that support the work we do. Your gift(s) to one or more of these funds is greatly appreciated.

General Fund– This goes to where the need is greatest and allows the Temple the most flexibility in directing your contribution dollars.

Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund – Donations are used for charitable giving at the Rabbis’ discretion.

Building Fund- Donations are used to pay down the building debt.

Cantors’ Fund – Donations are used for charitable giving at the Cantor’s discretion.

Annual Giving Campaign – The Annual Fund is a critical source of income to the Kehillat Chesed Fund– These funds are used to support individuals during Temple, helping us make up the difference between revenues from member- times of need such as providing meals of consolation, and other acts of kindship dues and other fees, and our actual operating costs. ness.

Temple Beth Tikvah Endowment Fund – The endowment helps to pay down the mortgage, and when completed will help to secure our congregation’s significant program needs and ensure our future financial stability.

Tikkun Olam Fund – The purpose of this fund is to promote and support social justice and community service efforts, particularly those that encourage giving and volunteering in partnership with our synagogue.

Preschool Enrichment Fund – This fund provides for staff development workshops, parent education, enrichment specialists, and special equipment for the preschool.

Campership/Israel Fund– These monies are used to provide scholarships for children to attend summer camp, retreats, study programs or Israel experiences.

Michael Zalkin Memorial Library Fund- Donations are used to purchase books and other library improvements.

Prayer Book Fund– Used to purchase books used for the purpose of conducting a service (Siddurim, Chumashim, Shiva minyan books, etc)

Torah Fund- Donations provide for the maintenance and upkeep of our Torah scrolls and dressings.

Education Scholarship Fund- helps to provide need-based scholarship assistance to families attending Religious education classes at TBT.
