Rabbi Greene Goes to Washington Whenever I go to our nation’s Capitol, I get chills. The grandeur of the city, the seat of government, the idealism and commitment of people striving to do good. Yes, I am still among those who believe that most of the people who serve our nation in positions of leadership are good people trying to make a difference.

The year is about learning Jewish sources that relate to God, Torah and Israel to help them Confirm who they are as young Jewish adults. So to stand at the site where King spoke, to witness their compassion and outrage in the Hall of Remembrance at the U.S. Holocaust Museum, to see their inspiration in their eyes at the new MLK Monument, is to see the next Jewish generation’s future.

These 15 year olds joined another 250 students at the L’taken Seminar of the Religious Action Center (RAC) of Reform Judaism. The term, “L’taken,” is the first word of L’taken et ha’olam b’malchut Shadai – “To repair the world under the Kingdom of God.” Through the RAC, these Jewish teens from all across the country travel with their rabbis, educators and youth workers to learn about public policy issues from a Jewish perspective and then lobby our Members of

“SHABBAT EXPERIENCE” for families with children ages 2-5
Saturday, Feb. 16, 10:00 – 11:30 AM and Friday, Feb. 22, 7:00 – 8:15 PM Now parents of young children (ages 2-5) can attend a “grown-up” service in the sanctuary while their children have their own “Shabbat Experience” elsewhere in the synagogue. You can be free from worrying about all the energy and loud voices your kids might have in the sanctuary – as they will be happily occupied with Jewish music, story-telling, art and movement!

Religious School We just finished our Tu B’Shevat celebration in religious school. Tu B’Shevat is the fifteenth day of the Jewish month of Shevat. It is known as the New Year for Trees. Tu B’Shevat has to do with the rainy season in Israel, which starts on the festival of Sukkot. This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. It takes four months for the rains to saturate the soil, nurture the trees and coax them into producing their fruit. During this time many trees are planted in Israel. On Tu B’Shevat we eat 3 types of fruits and all nuts. The first type are those that have an outer covering; they are things like oranges, bananas, almonds and pineapples. We eat dates, peaches and plums; these fruits all have pits which are inedible. We eat fruits like raisins, berries and figs; these are fruits in which we eat everything. On Tu B’Shevat we thank G-D for creating our wonderful land and remember that we need to keep it beautiful. The Torah says “Man is a tree of the field.” We are nurtured by deep roots, as far back as Abraham and Sarah. We celebrated Tu B’Shevat in Sunday School by attending an assembly program that the 6th graders put on for us. We also ate a variety of fruits and nuts in our classrooms. The excitement over B’nai Mitzvah date choices had people rushing in with their forms. I am pleased to report that all of our students received one of their date choices. Our next Shabbat and Family Service is taking place on Friday, February 8th. On this day our 3rd grade students will accompany Rabbi Greene and Cantor Kassel. They will be joined by their teachers, Esti Blue, Anna Gutkin and Aviva Margolies. Please join our students for this very meaningful service. Our Family Education Days in February are scheduled for Sunday, February 3rd for the PreK and Kindergarten classes and Sunday February 10th for our 7th grade class. We are looking forward to our next holiday of Purim. The 3rd and 4th grade classes are busy preparing a wonderful celebration for the school. Shalom

Early Childhood Education Center The Jewish Value for February is Tikkun Olam- repair of the world. This value is particularly poignant following a busy month of preparing for Tu B’Shevat. Tu B’Shevat is also called "Rosh HaShanah La'Ilanot" ראש השנה לאילנותliterally "New Year of the Trees". In Israel the day is celebrated as an ecological awareness day and trees are planted in celebration. In the ECEC the day is celebrated by discussing trees, acting like trees, painting trees, drawing trees, molding trees from clay, and the list goes on. The children love getting dirty while planting seeds and eagerly waiting and watching as the seeds begin to grow. Of course the favorite activity is singing “Happy Birthday” to the trees! The children love celebrating and discussing ways trees help us, and discovering ways they can help the trees. Trees are a magnificent display of beauty that we literally cannot live without. B’nai Mitzvah Ryan Aaron Rosenthal will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on February 2, 2013. Ryan is the son of Mike and Kimberly Rosenthal and brother to Noah. He is in the 7th grade at Hopewell Middle School where he participates in the Spanish Club. His hobbies include competitive tennis year round and swim team. Ryan is the grandson of Linda Miller of Atlanta and the late Donald Miller and Judy Rosenthal of New York and the late Robert Rosenthal.
Jared Lentin will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on February 2, 2013. Jared is the son of Steven and Felice Lentin and brother to Haylee Lentin. Jared is the grandson of Alan and Patti Miller of Boynton Beach, Florida, Dennis Lentin of Boynton Beach, Florida and Carole Lentin of Plantation, Florida. He is in the 7 th grade at Mabry Middle School where he is on the football team. Jared loves the Gators and intends to go to University of Florida. He enjoys participating in fantasy football and playing Xbox and football with his friends. Courtney Berman will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on February 9, 2013. Courtney is the daughter of Cathy and Mark Berman and sister to Caroline and Emily. She is in the 7th grade at Simpson middle school. Her hobbies are competition and sideline cheer and wake boarding.
Ellie Rose Coe will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on March 2, 2013. She is the daughter of Robin and David Coe and sister to Logan and Maya. Ellie is a 7th grade honor student at Hightower Trail Middle School. She is a talented pianist and plays violin in her school's chamber orchestra as well as the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra. Ellie also enjoys reading, learning new languages, and spending time with her dog, Phoebe. Eli Harris Rickles will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on March 2, 2013. Eli is the son of Ellen and Rob Rickles, the brother of Noah Rickles, and the grandson of Mary Lynn and Charles Alltmont, and Betty Rickles and the late Irwin Rickles, z”l. Eli is in the seventh grade at Haynes Bridge Middle School, where he is a member of the Beta Club and plays trumpet in the concert and jazz bands. Eli was selected to participate in the 2013 Georgia Music Educators Association District 5 Honor Band. Eli is also an accomplished piano player and enjoys writing music.

January was a month for the record books in the youth department. We had over 30 6th-8th graders attend the Whirly Ball event, our largest event yet. Later in the month, 17 high schoolers attended Winter Regional Kallah, the most we’ve ever brought to a regional event! For 7th and 8th graders, registration is now open for Hatikvah Kallah, which is a special regional event just for junior youth group. We STRONGLY encourage everyone to attend – it’s a great experience to meet other Jewish teens from around the Southeast and to engage in a variety of fun programming. Hatikvah Kallah is March 8th-10th in Charlotte, NC. The cost is $100 for the weekend if you register by February 7 th. There will be a bus to and from the event for an additional fee. Check your email for registration details.

Shalom Chaverim - שלום חברים Synagogues all across America, and it is certainly true for our Temple Beth Tikvah in Roswell, Georgia, day-in and day-out wrestle with “how do we engage people?” “How do we help them feel connected to Jewish life, to the synagogue, to that one small piece of knowledge that we share a history of a people with a very special set of hopes and dreams rooted in Torah?”
What message . . .what legacy . . . what lesson shall we leave our children? When a child wants to skip Religious School because of other social pulls, or when a child wants to go late to Religious School because of having been out late the night before, and our answer is “no,” is it really “do as I say, not as I do?”
What a tall order!
Do we say to our children, “connection to all things Jewish – that’s for you”? All the while they watch our actions express “Me . . .I don’t have time . . .I don’t have interest. You . . .you make time to be Jewish, to learn Jewish. Me . . .I will have you watch me not do those things.”
Every time you receive communication from your synagogue you see four “Gateways.”
The Sages of the Mishna have helped us with our modern day challenge. With a single short and sweet phrase in the tractate of “Pirke Avot” it is said, “Acquire a teacher for yourself.” Rabbi Yehoshua ben Perachia goes on to say “Obtain a teacher for yourself, acquire a friend for yourself, and judge everyone favorably.”
So friends, reflect for a moment. Through which Gateway have you walked? Which Gateway “speaks” to you? To which Gateway have you opened your heart?
So friends, find a Gateway . . . there are four of them each with possibilities for you, each with a message as old as our people. As you walk through the Gateway you have chosen, there will be those on the other side of that arbor with welcoming arms, to teach with you, to learn with you to study and pray with you and to be a friend with you.
I know the realities, and believe me, I know . . .they are real! Our lives are so busy; traffic is so congested; there are so many places to get to, from which to get back; work is demanding; life is demanding. But . . . through which Gateway have you walked? With which Gateway have you engaged? And as is so often said, “We just don’t have time. There are so many other things that are important and pull on our time.”
Together we will build community. May we go from strength to strength together.
Try one Gateway. . .just one . . .

Our people survive IF, and truly only if, some how, some way, we learn of those hopes and dreams revealed in Torah, so that as we pray, as we build our synagogue community, as we help bring the broken chards of glass in the world back together as one, we are present, and present as Jews.

The Hunger Walk team for the local Jewish Community is convened by the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta. Through the Federation’s Hunger Walk/Run campaign, the Jewish community supported 23 organizations last year. These organizations ranged from Kosher food programs and shelters to food distribution programs, and touched the lives of people in Atlanta, nationally, and even in Israel. Members of the Jewish community make it a priority to care for people in need, and this is also an integral part of the mission of the Jewish Federation. The family-friendly, festival atmosphere includes food vendors, games, educational activities, live entertainment and more! A Reform Jewish Advocacy Group The Southern District Social Action Committee of the Union for Reform Judaism is enlisting congregants from its 18 congregations in Georgia to lobby the state legislature on social justice issues consistent with the Jewish mandate of Tikun Olam – “repairing the world.” The goal is for participating members from all of our congregations to meet with their Georgia State Legislators at the Capitol. Each winter, our Larry Bregman, M.D., Educational Conference offers adults with developmental disabilities, their families and their caregivers the opportunity to learn about topics that might not be addressed in other venues. It also allows participants to socialize with others who share their interests and needs in a unique conference atmosphere. This year’s gathering – the 20th – will take place March 2-3 at the Selig Center in midtown Atlanta. Finally, the Jewish Special Needs Consortium, co-led by JF&CS, the Marcus Jewish Community Center and The Amit Program, is coordinating a third communitywide calendar of events. The consortium will provide awareness education and speakers for interested parties. ADULT ED College Care Packages Being Sent Soon The college outreach committee will be sending our college students a care package to coincide with Purim. If you have already notified us of your student’s college address, nothing more needs to be done. We strive to create care packages that are useful and have a variety of items. If you have suggestions for items to include in the care packages please let us know. Our committee is looking for volunteers to either donate items for the packages or to solicit businesses for the items. If you can help in this effort please contact us.

Pamela Jay Gottfried is a rabbi, parent, teacher and the author of Found in Translation: Common Words of Uncommon Wisdom. Since her rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1993, Gottfried has taught students of all ages in synagogues, churches, JCCs, day schools & colleges. She prefers to teach Melton courses at The Brill Institute and ceramics at Camp Ramah Darom. Gottfried is an alumna of Clal’s Rabbis Without Borders and a volunteer at North Fulton Community Charities. Course Description: Looking at familiar biblical stories, we will examine how the early sages communicated their ethical concerns through storytelling. Each session will include the careful reading of a biblical text and a sampling of rabbinic literature related to that passage. Our discussions will center on essential questions related to the human condition.
Nominating Committee - Call for Petitions It’s not too early to begin thinking about our new slate of volunteers for our May congregational meeting. The Temple Beth Tikvah Nominating Committee is requesting nominations by petition for the 2013-2014 Board of Trustees, Officers, and Board of Education. If you would like to nominate a congregant or submit a nomination for yourself, these are the criteria, according to our by-laws: 1) All nominations by petition must be separate for each position. 2) Each petition must be signed by twenty-five (25) *voting members of the congregation and must also be signed by the voting member who has petitioned. 3) No more than one (1) petition shall be submitted for any one member. 4) All petitions must be submitted by March 1, 2013.
