Open Doors, Open Minds Returns for Year Two Last year, our congregation jumpstarted a wonderful, inspiring experience that brought together several Roswell congregations: Temple Beth Tikvah, Roswell Presbyterian Church, Roswell United Methodist Church and St. David’s Episcopal Church and Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

others not from their own church/synagogue. After some time together, the hosting clergy member will facilitate a conversation that will touch upon how they worship at that church/synagogue, how the denomination started, what makes their house of worship distinctive. There will always be time for questions and comments from the participants.

In our first experience in this venture, our goal was simply to open the doors to each of our houses of worship to welcome our neighbors in an act of discovery of who we are and what we think as religious communities. While it does not advance real dialogue (we are working on that in other areas), it does strengthen our concern for each other and for each other’s communities. The participants last year found this program to be compelling, meaningful, and eye-opening. At the same time, there is a tremendous benefit for our own community to educate our neighbors about Judaism and concerns of the Jewish community.

The clergy that I am working with have agreed on enduring principles for these conversations that will be communicated and affirmed by all the participants.

Some of those principles include: ● To enter into dialogue so that you can learn and grow; not to change the other. ● Be honest and sincere, even if that means revealing discomforts with your own tradition or that of the other. Assume that everyone else is being equally honest and sincere. ● Everyone must be permitted to define their own religious experience and identity, and this must be respected by others. ● Proselytizing or seeking to "convert" the conversation partner is not permitted in an interreligious dialogue setting. Participants should feel free to express their own faith traditions and beliefs, but not try to persuade others to assent to them.

We are looking for our second cohort of people to move into the second year of this program. I was glad to start it here in Roswell, reaching out to my colleagues at these neighboring churches, and I hope we will find another twelve representatives from Temple Beth Tikvah to nurture these relationships.

Each house of worship will invite up to twelve people to participate in this program for this year. About once a month, the group will visit a different church or synagogue for a worship service. After the service, the host church/ synagogue will host a lunch for the participants of this program.

We are looking for twelve individuals from TBT who would like to participate in this monthly program running from December 2011 to April 2012. It you are interested, please write to rsvp@bethtikvah.com.

She has also been seen in shows at Actors Express (Love Jerry, Suzi Award Nomination - Best Actress in a musical), Atlanta Lyric Theatre (Jerry's Girls and Evita playing Evita), The Alliance Theatre (The Fourth Wall and Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris… nominated Best Play of 2007 by AJC! and most recently in Into The Woods.

She has also appeared in the Atlanta Children’s Christmas Parade. Courtenay has recorded 4 CDs – Nightingale, One for My Baby, A Merry Little Christmas, and Live at the Club. Together with partner Nina Jones, Courtenay founded a summer performing arts camp called Show Camp USA!

Move over “GLEE,” HIGH SCHOOL REUNION “CABARET” COMES TO TBT

January 7, 2012 Back in our day, the music department at Riverwood High School was the place to be. The Chorale, Mixed Chorus, Chamber Chorale, Girl’s Ensemble, Barbershop and Beautyshop Quartets, orchestra and bands - brought together all the cliques: jocks, cheerleaders, National Honor Society, Student Council, Prom Queens, and music lovers of every variety!

Now, thanks to a recent High School Reunion, and to “Facebook” – three Riverwood High School songstresses are back together again. We are all thrilled to reunite for what is sure to be an enjoyable evening of music, humor, nostalgia, drinks and dessert. One look at Courtenay and Laura’s bios – and I know you’ll make your reservation right away! Proceeds from this event will be designated for both the TBT Bucket Campaign and for future musical programming.

Laura Patinkin has been living in New York for the past 27 years, after earning her B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University in Music Theatre. She has appeared on Broadway (Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof with Topol), Off Broadway (Beau Jest, The Education of Hyman Kaplan, Godspell, Esther by Liz Swados, The Pajama Game), on National Tour (South Pacific with Robert Goulet), and in regional theatres around the country. Other roles include Sonia in They’re Playing our Song, Morales in A Chorus Line and Isabelle in Crossing Delancey. She is especially proud of her work with the Department of Defense/U.S.O., performing for our troops all over the world. Most recently she appeared at the White Plains Performing Arts Center in the world premiere of the musical, Wallenberg and continues to do commercial and voice-over work.

Courtenay Collins is a professional actress, singer, and vocal coach living in the Atlanta area. A graduate of Juilliard, she toured the US, Europe, and Canada as Christine in Phantom of the Opera. Other New York roles include Babette in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast as well as leading roles in Grease, Showboat, Love’s Labors’ Lost, Eating Raoul, Brigadoon, and many others!

In Atlanta, Courtenay has been seen around town in many of Atlanta's theatres, Gala Events, and Cabaret clubs (Libby’s Cabaret). The Future of Israel Education in the Diaspora We have all been to professional conferences that sometimes leave us expecting and wishing for more; but once in a while we will attend a conference that is pivotal in fostering a new understanding and inspires us to move in a new direction. Hedva Wiener and I were privileged to attend just such a conference, of the second type, about the future of Israel Education in the Diaspora. The iCamp conference was held in Chicago and the participants, both attendees and presenters, were some of the giants in the world of general and Jewish education. The problem posed to us at the beginning of the conference was - "How do we deal with the ever increasing distancing of young Jews from Israel characteristic of the past decade?" For three intensive days we listened, brainstormed, and interacted with other lay and professional community leaders, and with Jewish teens of all backgrounds. Our objective was to attempt to find the best path to reach, teach and deal with this problem sixty three years after the creation of the State of Israel.

The consensus among all the participants was that we must create a paradigm shift in our approach to Israel education.

Rather than throw out the traditional narrative, the general conclusion was to add to and expand on our teaching of Israel as an integral part of Jewish life. The teenagers attending felt that we must bring into the classroom, starting at an early age, a connection to modern Israel through current language trends (i.e. slang), culture, art and current events. As our youth gets older we must deal with the complexity of Israel education by remaining authentic to our historical narrative. In addition, we need to make the classroom a safe environment for the students to share and explore the other positions regarding Israel that they are exposed to in the outside world.

We have already asked the teachers to incorporate some of these ideas in their classroom beginning with the first grade through high school, in an age appropriate manner. By making a conscious effort to incorporate Israel education into all parts of our curriculum, the students will begin to understand that Israel with its vibrant, contemporary culture is an integral part of their Jewish identity.

Religious School Education Director Last month, we had our 5th & 6th Grade Retreat here in our building. With the leadership of Rachel Wilson and Beth Janes it was a huge success. We had over 30 kids attend. Beth and Rachel put in countless hours of preparation to really create something special for our students. Friendships were strengthened and new bonds were formed. It is our hope that these friendships will last for many, many years.

The children participated in social, religious, and mitzvah activities. They actively participated and helped to lead Shabbat services, worked as a team to complete group tasks and initiatives through ropes course activities. They did a tzedakah project putting together toiletry packages for a women’s shelter. Teamwork, Judaism, and fun were all interwoven throughout the weekend. The excitement and commitment felt by the students was contagious.

All of our chaperones and volunteers were amazing. Your dedication and enthusiasm throughout the retreat helped make it such a wonderful event. We couldn't have done it without you!

Mark your calendars for the Scholastic book. This will take place December 4th – December 13th at TBT in the religious school lobby. There will be lots of great books, games and toys for the whole family. This year we will also have a table selling Hanukkah merchandise. All proceeds from this table will benefit the religious school (the items from this table need to be paid for separately by cash or check).

Thanks to the generosity of Arthur Blank, excitement and anticipation of our Falcons Fundraiser was everywhere!

We announced the winners at the end of school and it was a great day! I am pleased to let you know that we raised $2,560.00. Ron Swichkow was the lucky winner of the Falcons game package. Beth Shiffman was the winner of the signed Jersey.

As a reminder, school will be closed December 20th through January 9th for Winter Break. Our first day back in session will be Tuesday, January 10th. Please mark your calendars and enjoy the break!

Early Childhood Education Director After much anticipation and waiting, I am so excited to announce that the children of the Early Childhood Center have new playground equipment. Thanks to our Rock the House fundraiser in April, the school was able to raise $11,000, which we chose to put toward making our already fabulous play structure safer and up to date.

On Sunday October 16, a group of wonderful people gathered to help put the playground together. I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of all of the children of the ECEC: Fred Steine, Steven Freeman, Bryna Freeman, Neil Goldstein, Ernie Mattace, Eric Smolian, Hoc Kho, Will Shields, Larry Haber, Rachel Palazzo, Rory Friedman, Olivia Goldstein, Sophia Goldstein, Blake Freeman, Shane Freeman, and Daniel Marks for their time and hard work! It is because of this group of giving and caring individuals that our children were able to play on the new playground immediately and with lots of smiles!

The new structure looks great, is safe, and the children have all given it a “thumbs up!”

B’nai Mitzvah Sam Wenig will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on December 3, 2011. He is the son of Martha and Steven Wenig and brother to Jansy. Sam is the grandson to Arthur and Florence Wenig.

He is in 7th grade at Dodgen Middle School where he participates in Orchestra. Sam’s hobbies include baseball, fencing, guitar, music and dancing.

Josh Getty will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on December 10, 2011. He is the son of Cindy and Ed Getty and the brother to Ben, Sam, Zach and Jon. He is a 7th grader at Dickerson Middle School. Josh is a year-round competitive gymnast and a summer swimmer. Josh’s mitzvah projects have included collecting coats for North Fulton Community Charities, donating candy and writing letters for Operation Stars and Stripes and helping reduce hunger in our communities by participating in the Hunger Walk, Operation Isaiah and TBT Turkey Drive. In his free time, Josh enjoys computer gaming and being with his friends and family.

Jason Weiner will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on December 11, 2011. He is the son of Ellen and Robert Weiner and brother to Reece. Jason is in the 7th grade at Hopewell Middle School where he participates in Junior Beta and Spanish Club. Hobbies include tennis, tennis and more tennis. He also enjoys playing video games, all types of sports and hanging out with friends. In the process of becoming Bar Mitzvah, Jason participated in various volunteer organizations including assisting at a foster care and teaching tennis at the Special Olympics.

College Connection News We'd like to thank all of our volunteers for their assistance in preparing care packages for our college students! We couldn't have done it without you! Our volunteers were: Roslyn Dodell, Donna Kallman, Beth Kess, Ellen Levitz, Emily Lewit and Vicki Steine.

Donating to TBT's Bucket Projects Campaign: A wonderful gift that benefits all in our community The second year of TBT's Bucket Projects Campaign is in full swing. At this point, money raised in the campaign's first year is being put to good use with both maintenance and improvement projects throughout the building. Over $10,000 has been raised in the second year of the Bucket Campaign. Adding that amount to the $113,000 raised in the Campaign's first year, we are well on our way to reach our overall $250,000 goal and carry out much needed additional repairs and improvements. We thank ALL our donors - both first time donors and repeat donors as well!

As we celebrate Chanukah with our families and friends, let's all take this opportunity to give an especially meaningful gift this season that directly benefits the whole TBT community. A donation to TBT's Bucket Projects Bucket Campaign help keep the lights aglow in our community gathering place. And those who make a donation before the end of 2011 will also enjoy the tax benefits this year as well. Its a win-win for all!

Putting Bucket Project Campaign Donations to Work In addition to tackling our most pressing need to replace the roof, other important items have been taken care of, including:      

Professional cleaning of the carpet in the sanctuary and social hall The repair of important security lights in the parking lot The installation of a new 20-ton air conditioning unit in the Religious School section of the building Replacement of hot water heater The repair and restoration of the beautiful outdoor Alterman Chapel Ark (which was greatly enjoyed at this year's Sukkot celebration).

Installing Wi-Fi - bringing TBT into the 21st century. The result of this upgrade has been immediate and wonderful! It is noticeable how many more people choose to stay at TBT on Sundays while their children are in Religious School and gather at the Cafe' tikVAH to take part in coffee and conversation while taking advantage of this new Wi-Fi access.

Donations From Within and Outside of the TBT Community One-third of TBT's members have stepped up to give to the Bucket Projects Campaign. How easy it would be to reach our $250,000 goal if everyone contributed! And contributions are not limited to TBT members. For example, TBT Board member, Jonathan Bennett, was touched when his parents chose to give to the Bucket Projects Campaign after spending time at the synagogue during a recent visit to Atlanta. Jonathan's parents have been to TBT many times over the years but they were especially moved by the beautiful community spirit at a Sukkot gathering and wanted to give back. Such acts of generosity help make TBT the special place it is. We hope you will join or re-join the effort this year and help make a difference.

Making the High Holy Days Sing!

The choir receives many compliments each year for our contribution to the High Holy Days. People often express how much the choir adds to the service and their holiday.

Music has been known to have a profound impact on our experiences. (Just think of your High School years).

The choir thought we would help you understand the many steps involved in accomplishing this. We have to practice and practice. The key to our success is Cantor Kassel. You might be surprised at the time and effort that goes into the High Holy Days every year. So, here is a summary of what it requires:

· An important key to remember, she is working with a wide variety of volunteers. Some of us read music, some of us read Hebrew, and some of us read neither. So getting a clear, clean song out of this team takes a lot of explanation and review.

∙ Cantor Kassel reviews the service each year with the Rabbi, noting the message in the liturgy, then selecting the appropriate music to accompany it.

It must have the right tone while, at the same time, create interest. She researches what new music is available to allow for some subtle changes.

· Cantor helps us understand the meaning of what we are saying so that we can sing it with meaning. · She and the Choir arrive one hour early for each service to rehearse and thankfully many of us stay for both services. · And this does not include her own personal singing contribution to the service.

· She then sets up the rehearsal schedule and selects our director.

The choir would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Cantor Kassel and to Paige Dobbins for an amazing spiritual experience.

· Rehearsals typically last two or 2.5 hours and began in early August this year. At each rehearsal, Cantor is there to rehearse each song to achieve the right rhythm, syncopation, pronunciation and tonal quality.

Some songs have a bold declaration while others are a soft plea.

The Israel Committee has formed a discussion group on Israeli Affairs. Participants are provided with timely articles from the Israeli and other press on which to base our discussions. In the Community B’nai B’rith Pinch Hitter Program Volunteers are needed from the Atlanta Jewish Community to fill-in for non-medical personnel in 14 hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities on Christmas Day. (No experience is necessary.) This allows many of our Christian brethren to spend time with their families on their holiday. You can choose one of 3 shifts to work which are: 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. OR 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. OR 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
