As we embark on the 37th year of Temple Beth Tikvah's vibrant journey, I reflect on the progress and connections we've cultivated. One of my primary goals, as shared during our annual meeting in May, has been to amplify our synagogue's visibility within the Roswell community, and the broader Atlanta Jewish landscape.
Over the past few weeks, both Cantor Kassel and I have participated in a number of interfaith panels, and while some of the discussions have been challenging, they have been important. It continues to be vital for TBT to be at the table for these events, for the simple reason that interfaith dialogue is a tool for peacebuilding and paving the way for a more just and compassionate community.
My recent induction into the Roswell Rotary Club exemplifies this same effort. Rotary's emphasis on service above self aligns well with our imperative for tikkun olam. By collaborating on service projects, we address communal issues together, demonstrating the power of interfaith cooperation in making a tangible difference in our Roswell community.
Beyond Rotary, I have taken on leadership roles that extend our influence and strengthen our ties within the Atlanta Jewish community. My upcoming three-year term on the board of the American Jewish Committee underscores our congregation's commitment to battling antisemitism and promoting Jewish advocacy. Additionally, I chair the clergy advisory group for MACOM (Metro Atlanta Community Mikveh), further emphasizing TBT's dedication to fostering Jewish life and understanding of Jewish rituals.
Congregationally, we continue to amplify our presence here in Roswell. Our monthly participation at Alive In Roswell has been great: being in spaces like this gives TBT the opportunity to stand out. To be seen on Canton Street and to meet wonderful people some who may be Jewish, and looking for their Jewish home but so many more who need to know us, because that's where allyships are made. TBT's upcoming Mitzvah Day, "Laura's Love,*" named in memory of Laura DeRiemer z"l, highlights our commitment to community service in our Roswell community. Laura was a beautiful woman whose unwavering dedication to the welfare of
vulnerable souls in our community inspires us to make a tangible difference through engaging in acts of lovingkindness.
Aswecontinuetoprayforthesafereturnofthe hostages taken during the horrific attack on Israel on October 7, we channel our energy into spreading love and hope, striving to do all that each one of us is able to bring peace back to the land of Israel and into our world. AmYisrael Chai.
With another contentious presidential election approaching, in the spirit of peace, let us remember to respect, care for, and love one another, because no matter the outcome of the election, we will remain a holy community: a House of Hope, for all. In this tent of peace of ours, we hold fast to the teachings of our tradition that call on us to counteract a world where hatred attempts to thrive by responding to violence with ahava, tzedek, chen, chesed, and rachamim justice, righteousness, decency, inclusion and love, for the simple reason that to be a light unto the nations we must do as we are taught in Tehillim (Psalm 89:3) "Olam chesed yibanei - I will build this world with love.”
So let us, in the weeks and months ahead, as a Kehillah Kedosha, roll up our sleeves and dive into the task of healing this beautiful, yet sometimes cruel world. Let us all show Roswell and the surrounding communities how Temple Beth Tikvah brings to fruition our Jewish values through our engagement in and out of TBT's walls.
Hodesh Tov!
Rabbi Alexandria Shuval-Weiner

Inaninemonth period of time...
I have been to Poland and Prague and the nearby concentration camps of Terezin, AuschwitzandBirkenau.
I have stood with TBT’s Czech Torah in Westminster Synagogue in London to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the WestminsterScrollsTrust.
I have been to Israel with it’s post-October 7 matzav situation.
Standing on the ground where history has happened does not compare to reading books and articlesorwatchingmoviesand documentaries.
Standing on the ground...where acts of inhumanitywouldbringanybodytotears.
Standing on the ground...where acts of kindnessandcompassion havealsooccurred.
At times I have been close to losing hope and then: I see the flourishing activities of the Krakow Jewish Community Center. I see dozens of people holding their Czech Torah scrolls, giving them new life. I see thousands of Israelis protesting for the return of the hostages and changes in Israeli government.Iseeand haveseen HOPE tikvah. So whoamItogivein todespair?
I am a much humbled human being who feels called upon to make some sort of difference forthebetter.

TBT Preschool Summer Camp was amazing! The children had such a great time playing outside in the water, and on our incredible water slide. The teen aides were so helpful: I am already looking forwardtohavingthembacknextsummer!
Our temple has been fortunate enough to enjoy state-of-the art security in the building. We are very thankful for all the love and support shown to the Preschool by the entire TBT congregation. Additionally, I want to let everyone know that we are the lucky recipients of a $10,000 grant from the Jewish Federation to underwrite a portion of Preschool security needs not already covered by the congregational budget. TBT Preschool Meet and Greet is on Friday, August 9 at 4:00 PM, followed by the ever-popular Splish Splash Shabbat at 5:00. Preschool families can spend time with their childrens’ teachers, and then socialize and meet newcomers. We’llprovide dinner, drinks and lotsof
fun water play. Our Preschool continues to grow, and we even have some brand new teachers starting this year. I am excited to welcome them in, along with our more seasoned teachers. This is sure to be another fun and exciting year at TBT Preschool.

In August, we will have a special program to make ceramic anemones (like the ones in Israel) to put in a commem-orative garden that Rabbi ShuvalWeiner will create. These ceramic flowers will serve as a memorial to the tragedy of October 7. This project will be facilitated by Robin Singer, a wonderful artist in the Jewish community; the ceramic flowers will be created by many of our Preschool parents. We are honored for Robin to work with us here at TBT, and we look forward to seeing what she and our community will createtogether. As the new school year
begins, I want to thank Rabbi Alex Shuval-Weiner and Cantor Nancy Kassel for all they do for us. Their endless love and support is so special: it

This past Memorial Day, I spent the weekend with many of our TBT teens, as well as a few alum and parents at Camp Jenny (see the pic of all of us there!) You may have heard about Camp Jenny through HOTTY’s Camp Jenny Bingo Fundraiser each spring.
Camp Jenny is the NFTY (National Federation of Temple Youth) Southern Area and Southern Tropical Region’s year-round Mitzvah Corps project, which gives children from an urban school in Atlanta the opportunity to receive tutoring and support throughout the year. This culminates in a four day-long camp experience at URJ’s Camp Coleman over the Memorial Day Weekend. The students receive the love of big "brothers and sisters," three nutritious meals a day, and encouragement for the future. They also enjoy activities such as hiking in the mountains, water play, ziplining, arts and crafts, and a variety of sports and teambuilding activities.
It’s an amazing and awesome experience; one that
stories about my fictional cousin, Batman. Each kid was unique, interesting, and challenging; each was a oneman show with his own story. Being responsible for these children and helping them grow in a new environment brought out something in me that I had never felt before. I transitioned from the spotlight to backstage, helping the kids get all they could out of their experience. I felt the energy of these kids as they flew from one activity to the next, pushing me to do my best for them. I felt important not for who I was, but for what I was doing with them.

We were first asked 12 years ago to volunteer as doctors at Camp Jenny over Memorial Day weekend. Camp was an important part of both of our childhoods, so we jumped at the opportunity. Seeing the joy on the campers

This summer has really flown by, hasn’t it?! It feels like just last week we were burning the mortgage and eating the last of our matzah. But alas, it’s been a busy summer, and we’ve managed to beat the heat here at TBT! Between successful ‘big’ events, including Bourbon & BBQ and our 3rd Annual Golf Tournament, and smaller gatherings such asMah Jonggand Yoga,we’veplaced in trivia, sipped & mingled at wine events, baked pecan muffins with Anne, observed Havdalah in our PJ’s with ouryoungerfamilies, andsomuch more.
In addition to connecting with one another, we’ve shared ourselves with the greater community as well. At the monthly Alive in Roswell street festival, we have given away swag and chatted with everyone who stopped at our booth. One woman approached us sharing, “I’m not Jewish, but I live in Roswell and I’m really glad you are here.” It was a heartwarming message to receive in these – let’sface it – troubling times. We recently hosted a large-scale Puzzle Fest, for the jigsaw puzzling aficionados, likemyself.Thediverse group of people who attended loved seeing our buildingandlearningabit aboutJudaism.
Coming up, please join us for game days, book club, hiking, and anything else that interests you. Don’t see something you like? Call me and we willworktomakesomethinghappen.
Please join us for two special Erev Shabbatot in August: On 8/2, our “Welcome Back” Shabbat, during which we will celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, will begin with drinks and noshes at 5:45 PM. Please invite anyone who is shulshoppingtojoinusaswell.On8/16ourservicewill take place at Roswell Town Square and will feature a very talented friend of mine, singer-songwriter Amber(Adina)Ikeman.Come joinus!

TBT is proud to be a part of the Backpack Buddies program, supporting Esther Jackson Elementary school students with weekend meals and snacks for kids who rely on school lunches during the week.
Each backpack is designed to nourish one school‐aged child for a weekend.
Here’s what’s best to donate:
• Shelf stable white milk (individual size)
• Canned vegetables - either individual or full size cans
• Canned fruits - either individual or full size cans
• Snacks (individual size) - granola bars, crackers, chips, animal cookies, etc.
• Breakfast items - oatmeal packets, breakfast bars, cereal (individual size)
• Proteins - tuna, canned chicken, beans, ravioli, stews Please leave items on the silver cart in the School Lobby. If interested in volunteering, please reach out to: Jeannine Bernstein or Renee Weiskopf We will be having a kickoff/information event in mid August. Stay tuned!
As our 2023-24 Annual Campaign and Torah Project comes to a close, I’m delighted to report that both of these efforts raised over $393,000 with 190 families participating – or 50% of our membership – the highest participation rate in many years! Thank you allfor your generosity toTBT! In so doing,we qualified for the Arthur Blank Family Foundation match of $250,000 which matched all donations up to $250,000: above and beyond our normal Annual Campaign efforts. We pushed ourselves this year and accomplished great things. The Torah Writing Project was executed flawlessly, and was the perfect initiative to engage our TBT
community and “gift ourselves” a brand new Torah to honor TBT’s Double Chai (36th) anniversary! Oh yes, and we raised over $6,000 from our 3rd Annual TBT Golf Tournament at Brookfield Country Club. That money was directed toward our TBT Teen Programs. Stay tuned for our 4th Annual Tournament, to be held on June 9, 2025 at Brookfield CountryClub.
Thanks to all our members for what you contribute to TBT – and a huge thank you to all of our Donors in 2023-24. We have again shown “it takesavillage!”
