PRESCHOOL

Our preschool year ended in May, and we are still thinking fondly of all our recently graduated Pre-K children and families! Although they have ‘moved up,’ we are excited to have these kids’ painted handprints on our Pre-K Hall of Fame Wall. In the years to come, they can visit TBT, and show siblings and friends the handprints left behind. We had a lovely year-end celebration, and are looking forward to hearing from everyone, all about moving up to Kindergarten.

We had an amazing summer at TBT Preschool Camp! The children enjoyed all the outside play time, especially on our new awesome water slide! It has a bucket on top that dumps water on the kids. Our fantastic teachers and wonderful teen helpers made camp memorable. Everyone loved the daily ice pops/ice cream. It was so cute watching the littlest ones figure out how to eat an ice pop by squeezing the plastic tube, and pushing the cold treat up slowly. By the end of the summer, they were experts!

Splish Splash Shabbat is a big hit with Preschool Camp families. Cantor Kassel and Ms. Suzanne did a great job

bringing in Shabbat, with songs and prayers. The kids cooled off in the water pools and on the water slide. There was plenty of food and yummy dessert. It was so nice to see our existing preschool families play together, and to meet some new, soon-to-be preschool students that will join us when school starts.

Preschool begins August 14; our teachers are busy now, getting ready to welcome all of their students. There are still a few openings in the 3-year old class. We will host an Open House for everyone on Friday, August 11, from 10:00 to 11:30 AM Children and parents can meet teachers and visit classrooms. Following the Open House, later that day, we will have another Splish Splash Shabbat in the early evening, from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM. Hope to see you there!

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Towards the end of last year, we got a letter from the school saying that my older son was being recommended for the higher-level math class. We had to check yes or no, sign it, and send it back in. I automatically checked yes and went to put it back in his folder, but then I paused. I’ve worked with teens for over 20 years, and the pressure upon them have become incredibly intense. The expectation that they take all possible honors and AP courses, they should be working a grade level ahead of what they’re in, they should enter college with a year of AP credits already…it’s not impossible, but I do find it detrimental to their health and happiness. I routinely hear teens (and their parents) tell me that they can’t attend a Saturday night youth group program because they have too much homework, or they don’t feel like they can go on the Washington D.C. lobbying trip because they can’t afford to miss two days of school. What’s wrong with our system if teens are turning down an opportunity to go to our nation’s capital, learn about important political issues, and lobby their congresspeople about issues that are meaningful and significant to their lives?

I had a teen recently tell me that even with good time management there weren’t enough hours in the day for them to get all their work completed. After that comment, I called a counselor

at Roswell High School to help me understand what’s going on, and what they tell their students. He said that teens who take all on-level courses have a manageable amount of work; it’s the teens who take 5-6 AP courses each semester who are up all night trying to finish their work for school. Maybe it’s just me, but that’s too much. This counselor suggests that his students pick the subject(s) that they are passionate about, and take the AP course in that; for the other subjects, there is nothing wrong with taking on-level courses. (I wish someone had given me that advice before I took AP Calc in high school!)

So, back to this form I had to sign for my son. He struggled a bit in school this past year, and even though his final test scores showed that he “belonged” in the higher math class, we talked it over with him, and ultimately checked “no.” We decided that just because the school was pushing, didn’t mean that it was the right decision for him. You know your kids best, but I want to encourage all of you, as this new school year kicks off, to take a few minutes and pause before you automatically check that “yes” box.

Do you know a high school senior who is heading off to college in the fall? We at Hillel International want to celebrate and welcome them to the Class of 2027 with a FREE Welcome Gift

Take 30 seconds to let us know where they're going to school next year, and we’ll mail a Welcome Gift straight to their door! Plus, they’ll be entered into a drawing to receive one of five $250 gift cards.

CLAIM YOUR GIFT

We're so excited for what’s to come for our next class of first-year students, and we can't wait to welcome them with open arms to Hillel’s network of nearly 150,000 Jewish college students!
