Back-To-Shul Shabbat and Picnic in the Parking Lot: August 18th at 6:30pm

As I write this article it is the Hebrew month of Tammuz, the heart of summer in the northern hemisphere. Our days are long, steamy, and full of sunshine. Many have been enjoying time outdoors, travelling to see new and exciting destinations or to spend time with family and friends. Many of our children have been or are just finishing up a session at summer camp. For most of us, these days of summer have brought with them time to unwind and unburden, offering a great exhalation—releasing us from the stressors of day-to-day living.

Join us for a wonderfully spirited musical Shabbat, reunite with your family and friends and stay for a barbeque picnic dinner prepared by our very own Men’s Club. Lots of fun for everyone!

As the Joni Mitchell song goes, we are all on a carousel of time.

So, we begin again…another rotation in the cycle of time, another turn of the wheel—Rosh Hashanah isn’t far off, school is beginning, and we at Temple Beth Tikvah are preparing to launch a new year of congregational engagement opportunities.

The TBT Religious School and Lifelong Learning activities have long been great strengths of our community. With Susan on the senior staff team, we know that she will help us develop and grow the educational offerings for Temple Beth Tikvah members of all ages. Although Susan has been with us since April, transiting into this newly created position, it is now time, with the new school year ready to launch, that we properly welcome her into the TBT community. Cantor Kassel and I hope that you will join us as we say Barucha HaBa’ah to Susan and her family.

And we are excited!

We have so many interactive, impactful events scheduled for the coming year, and our TBT team-lay and professional- is looking forward to sharing this New year with you!

From the Tikkun Olam/World Repair Fair taking place in September to welcoming back musical guests Nefesh Mountain for Chanukah.

We are hosting Hatikvah Kallah for the teens and launching Mitzvah Mondays for the adults—new classes, new affinity groups, lobby days and more…there is so much happening at TBT in 5778 you won’t want to miss a minute.

TBT Israel Adventure 2017 Thirty-three wonderful souls explored Israel together this past June for what turned out to be an amazing adventure! From Jerusalem to the Golan Heights, the Jordan River to the Western Wall and down to the Dead Sea, we truly felt the magic of Israel. With our amazing educator-guide Doron, who just happened to hold a PhD in biblical history, we had the great pleasure of walking and exploring the land through both a modern and ancient lens. We explored the streets of Sefat, the mountain top city where the mystical words of Lecha Dodi were penned, and we walked through the ancient streets that lead to the Holy Temple, and placed our hands on 3,000 year old stones. A very special experience included Kaitlin Otto becoming Bat Mitzvah at the Egalitarian section of the Western Wall (yes, the same area that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet recently barred from use).

We spent time packaging food to be distributed throughout the country helping to battle hunger. We also explored Kibbutz Lotem and learned about their program bringing the wonders of nature to Israelis with special needs.

Tell your friends- TBT is the place to be for Jewish life and living.

Do you plan to be away for Rosh Hashanah and/or Yom Kippur and would like to worship at another synagogue? Temple Beth Tikvah enjoys “reciprocity” with hundreds of temples nationwide. Please contact Michelle Leder in the synagogue office as soon as possible and she will be happy to help you secure seats. There are some temples that “close out” their reciprocity tickets early! Additionally, if you have someone visiting you for the holiday, who is a member in good standing at another temple, please tell Michelle, as well, so we may accommodate you.

Everyone came home with incredible memories and a desire to return to Israel as soon as possible! So, good news! We are already planning another TBT trip in 2019 - if you think you might be interested send me a note, let’s talk - Israel 2019!

Notes from Cantor Kassel What to keep? What to discard?

I’ve read several articles lately about how these days people are not interested in having the furniture, china, artwork, etc. that belonged to their parents and grandparents. There just isn’t the same sentimental attachment to these things that previous generations held. The good news is these are just “things”. What is most important is the time spent with loved ones and the memories we create with them.

Lately I have become the unofficial genealogist and archivist in the family and to say that it is an overwhelming task is an understatement, especially as temporary custodian of over a hundred years’ worth of letters, articles, photos, programs and more.

What to keep? What to discard?

Such simple questions but far more difficult to act on. Not everything can be saved and we have to make our best judgment calls on what to preserve and hope that some long gone ancestor will be forgiving.

As I go through my own accumulated and assorted papers and emails, I have decided to let go of anything with (pardon the new-age terminology) negative energy around it. It serves no purpose now although there might have been some valuable lessons learned at the time.

So as we say farewell to summer and greet a new “school year” here in GA (the rest of the country has another month of summer)…..here’s what I’ll keep and discard:

I’ll keep…….. the inspiration from: -the glorious celebration of TBT’s 30th anniversary -seeing long-time members work side-by-side with newer members in leadership roles -the enthusiasm of our students on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays and HOTTY! -our joyous Ruach Shabbat musicians, Adult and Jr. choirs -seeing our community come together to support those affected by illness and loss -Rabbi Shuval-Weiner and the breath of fresh air she brings to everything and everyone -getting to know and work with our new Dir. of Congregational Learning, Susan Cosden -the dedication and hard work of our office staff and police officers I’ll discard of: any ‘things’ or ‘thoughts’ or ‘attitudes” that get in the way of my inspiration!

I’ll welcome in: -new members to our Adult and Jr. Choirs and musical forces -new Torah and Haftarah chanters -helpers with musical programming

Congregational Learning - Susan Cosden “Happy are they who dwell in Your house; they will ever praise You. Happy is the people like this. Happy is the people whose God is Adonai.” – The first two lines of the Ashrei from the weekday and Shabbat morning and afternoon liturgy.

thirtieth anniversary year and reflected upon our history.

Now we begin to look ahead for our next thirty years. In terms of the education department, with my arrival as Beth Tikvah’s first Director of Congregational Learning we begin to examine education at the temple in its totality.

We wanted a theme that would connect with all of us, whether we are three or 93. We wanted a theme that would allow us to explore what it means to be a synagogue and where we are going as a community. After considering several prayers and Jewish sayings, the Ashrei, and specifically these two opening verses, called out to us as the best theme for this year.

The education department is so happy and excited that our school year is about to begin. On Sunday, August 6 our entire religious school faculty – teachers and madrichim will spend many hours together studying and preparing for our school year. Monday, August 7 – Friday, August 11 our ECEC faculty will have the opportunity to come together and learn from one another. On Sunday, August 13 our religious school teachers will join religious school teachers from all over Atlanta to continue our learning so that we may best teach our students. Our ECEC school year begins Monday, August 14. Our religious school year begins on Sunday, August 27 with a family education day for grades kindergarten through seventh grade. This year, one thing that unites our ECEC, religious school, and adult education programs is our educational theme for the year, the Ashrei.

In English there is a difference between a house and a home. A house is a structure. To build a house requires technical knowledge, materials and financing. A house serves as a place to keep our belongings and protect us from the elements. A home is different. You can live in a house that does not feel like a home. To be a home, it needs to feel like a place you belong, a place you feel at peace, a place you feel safe. In Hebrew there is only one word for both. This year we hope to address how Temple Beth Tikvah can be a home for each of us. Further, we will interpret what it means to specifically be a House of God and a House of Hope. What does that mean for us as a The Ashrei is a prayer that is found in our siddur community and individually as we enter and look around (prayerbook) first in the P’sukei D’zimrah (Morning our home and what does it mean as we look outside at Psalms), then after the morning Amidah and as the the world from our House of Hope? What does it mean to opening for Minchah (afternoon) service. It begins with be happy and how does Judaism, Reform Judaism, and Psalm 84:5 (the first sentence quoted above), then Psalm Temple Beth Tikvah help us in our pursuit of happiness 144:15 (the rest of the quote above), and then contains all and meaning/purpose? What does it mean that we all of Psalm 145. Not only is this prayer recited three times dwell in this home together, i.e. what does it mean to be each day but according to the Talmud it is said that a temple family?

“Anyone who recites these opening verses together with Psalm 145 three times each day is to be assured a place in On behalf of the education team, we look forward to the world-to-come.” (Ber. 4b) The Talmud also states that exploring these questions together, to learning from one if time does not allow the entire P’sukei D’zimrah to be another, and together helping each other grow as read that saying the Ashrei alone can account as if you individuals, as Jews, and as a sacred community. May we had recited the entire section of the service. go from strength to strength.

Some of you may be thinking, thanks for this Talmudic lesson, but what does this have to do with me or my children as we don’t worship three times a day and why did you choose this as the educational theme for the year? I thank you for asking this. This year is a liminal year in our congregation’s history, especially when we think of our educational department. Relationships, Meaning and Impact A favorite question posed by interviewers of corporate CEO’s is, “What keeps you up at night?” It’s another way of asking, “What is the core issue(s) that you feel you have to get right in order for [firm name] to enjoy long term success?” If I were to apply this question to our synagogue context, I would say that what keeps me up at night is wondering whether we are doing everything we can to help our members develop deep relationships, find meaning and purpose through living Jewishly, and to make an impact in the lives of the people and the community around them. Fundamentally, these are the things that members tell us they want from their affiliation with Temple Beth Tikvah.

Many members believe in the value of ‘giving back’ to their community, with some seeking ways to also teach that value to their children.

TBT’s robust Tzedek Committee activities is just one area in which we connect Jewish obligations (mitzvot) to the notion of making an impact.

Often organized in collaboration with our Religious School, many of our social action and social justice projects involve parents, grandparents, students, and teachers alike stepping away from their individual concerns and making a difference in the lives of others.

How can you develop strong relationships with people who will be there for you in times of joy and times of challenge? TBT offers a multitude of options including participating in our burgeoning affinity and chavurah groups, joining our sisterhood or men’s club, becoming one of the ‘regulars’ at Shabbat services, etc. In addition, our Religious School will be expanding the ways in which both parents and children can meet and interact with their peers.

We have a lot to be proud of in terms of how we allow members to develop and grow their sense of relationships, meaning, and impact through their connections to Judaism in general and to TBT in particular. Is this all we can do? I suspect not. But this is where I call upon you to help us get even better. Beyond simply becoming a more active participant in one or more of the activities mentioned above (which I certainly encourage everyone to consider doing), we need your ideas and dreams to carry us forward into the next chapter of TBT’s story. What can we be doing differently? How can we help you achieve what you are seeking in the areas of relationships, meaning, and impact? Any and all ideas are welcome.

A key reason that Temple Beth Tikvah exists is to help members address their own questions about life’s meaning and purpose through the lens of Jewish history, culture, and practices. This might take the form of a 1-on-1 meeting with the Rabbi in association with a life cycle event or simply at your request. Alternatively, it might involve dipping your toe in one of the many lifelong learning options that we offer, e.g., weekly Torah study classes following Saturday morning services, or one of the multi-synagogue learning events that TBT has begun to host.

First Day of Religious School for Kindergarten – Seventh Grade Sunday, August 27th is our first day of religious school for all kindergarten – seventh graders. All parents are expected to join their children for the entire morning, 9:30 – noon. Our morning will include an opening day assembly, time for the children to meet their teachers and classmates, time for the parents to meet their children’s teachers and fellow parents, time for the parents and children separately to meet with Rabbi Shuval-Weiner and Susan Cosden, and time to pray together. Of course, what would a Jewish gathering be without a nosh so we will have that as well.

B’nai Mitzvah Kaela Paulin will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on August 5, 2017. Kaela is the daughter of Meredith and Chad Paulin and older sister to Emalie and Brooklyn. Her mitzvah project included two areas of focus, hunger and wellness. She participated in Hunger Doesn’t Take a Break, which is a food program to provide meals to children and families who are part of the free lunch program. Her second philanthropy project was to bring resources to patients with cancer. She delivered healthy snacks and brought some cheer and well wishes to patient who were receiving chemotherapy at Northside Cancer Center. She also collected funds to assist efforts of Feel Beautiful Today, which is a non profit organization that brings art projects for patients undergoing treatments in attempt to help them focus on beauty and creation instead of their disease. Hobbies and interests include playing piano and trumpet, reading, art, and playing with her bullmastiff dog, Lailah. Kaela is also a member of the East Cobb National Charity League.

Stephanie Bergman will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on August 5, 2017. Stephanie is the daughter of Harris and Suellen Bergman and sister to Zachary Bergman. She is an 8 th grade honors student at Dickerson Middle School, where she plays oboe in the school band. She is also a member of the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Her hobbies include playing bridge and piano, reading, hip-hop dance, activities with her Girl Scouts troop, and attending URJ Camp Coleman. Stephanie is excited to share this milestone with her friends and family.

Hailey Lober will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on August 12, 2017. Hailey is the daughter of Michael and Heather Lober and sister to Hannah Lober. Hailey is in the 8th grade at Mill Springs Academy, where she has received three President’s Educational Gold Awards for Outstanding Academic Excellence. She plays fast pitch softball for the City of Roswell, is on the swim team at Mill Springs, and is an equestrienne at Alpha Equestrian. Hailey also enjoys biking, hiking, surfing, skateboarding, and kayaking. Hailey is an active member of National Charity League (NCL), a mother/ daughter philanthropic organization and she is also involved in a leadership program at school. Through both programs, Hailey volunteers at a number of philanthropies, such as: Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, Atlanta Humane Society, The Drake House, Dream Weavers of Georgia, Foster Care Support Foundation, Furkids, Fulton County Library, Heaven’s Gait Therapeutic Riding, North Metro Miracle League, and STAR House. Although Hailey is a true animal lover and enjoys supporting those organizations, her favorite volunteer opportunity is tutoring the after school children at STAR House. Hailey makes a personal connection with every child she tutors, resulting in lasting relationships and impressions on both teacher and student. Hailey is also a dedicated environmentalist. As part of her Mitzvah projects, Hailey joined the Sierra Club to support honeybee colony collapse disorder research. She also certified her yard as a wildlife habitat through World Wildlife Fund, and continues to find ways to enhance the world around her for ecological sustainability.

Lily Danielle Frank will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on August 12, 2017. Lily is the daughter of Aaron and Amy Frank and the sister to Noah Frank. Lily’s grandparents are Joan Rosenbluth and the late Jerrell Rosenbluth of Atlanta and Herb and Cynthia Frank of Delaware.

Lily is a rising 8th grader at Crabapple Middle School where she participates in the yearbook staff. She is a gymnast at Roswell Gymnastics where she has been training for a number of years. Lily’s hobbies include art and photography.

Peyton Elle Schwartz will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on August 19, 2017 at Camp Barney Medintz in Cleveland, Georgia with her cousin.

Peyton is the daughter of Danielle Levy and Andrew Schwartz, and sister to Joely Schwartz. She is in 7th grade at Dodgen Middle School where she plays the trombone. Peyton's hobbies include playing tennis, reading, and playing with her family dog, Duke. Peyton especially enjoyed volunteering at FurKids as one of her Mitzvah projects and plans to continue her volunteer work.

Jack Anderson will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on August 26, 2017. Jack is the son of Dana and Mark Anderson and the brother to Josh.

He is in the 7th grade at the Davis Academy where he participates in the school play and the Decibelles. Jack enjoys making films, playing football, and playing video games with his friends.

Sisterhood Welcomes You! A brand new year is being planned and we already have some key events to start off the year.

We hope you will join us and get involved socially and be active on our committee.

Our opening event will be Sunday, September 17th, 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Social Hall.

Please note the date change! Sisterhood will be hosting our very first fashion show by Fox’s of Atlanta. Our very own Sisterhood members will be displaying great pieces of designer clothing to meet your fashion needs. Please join us for brunch, munch and fun at this special kick off to our Sisterhood season!

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Bonnie Walkes and Terry Carasick for organizing and leading our last book review, The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman. Journey through Kesher On Monday, August 28, 6:30-8:30, all eighth and ninth graders are welcome (even if they haven’t registered for religious school) to come and sample dinner and Kesher. During the evening, after dinner, the students will do icebreakers and mixers to begin to get to know each other as a class and individually; will investigate 20 different topics; and vote on their top four or five choices to explore through a Jewish lens during the school year.

Some of the topics up for consideration include: Jewish music, Jewish identity through films, ecology, Jews Around the World through Food; and shmirat haguf (protecting/taking care of your body).
