When the Ark is Open on Yom Kippur… Come Close Last year at this time, I wrote to you about the power of Neilah – the final service on Yom Kippur. I explained that these are the final moments before the Gates of Repentance close (which leads us to the term Neilah, meaning

Sifrei Torah are being held before us and those people are standing. When the Torah is amongst us and it is resting or someone who is holding it is sitting, then we sit, too.

As we continue with our service, while sitting or standing, the ark will remain open and you can respectfully come to share your private prayer before God. You can come yourself. You can come with a loved one or your family. Each of us can take some time to pray.

This year at this service, I am going to invite – for those who choose – anyone to ascend the bimah while the ark is open to stand before the open ark and offer their own personal, silent prayer. As the gates begin to close, some of us might need to express something that can’t be spoken at other times. Others might want the opportunity to come as close as one physically can to God’s Presence hovering over us on such a day.

Whatever one might need, this is our chance to express our deepest prayers and feelings before our most sacred space at our most sacred time.

I know some of us might be concerned about walking about or sitting while the ark is opened. Yet, the Shulcahn Aruch, the most widely accepted Code of Jewish Law, gives us the halachah (classic Jewish law) on the issue. It says that one is to stand when a Torah scroll is in motion (Yoreh Deah 282.2), not just when the ark is open. To give an illustration, we stand for Kol Nidre not because the ark is opened, but because the

Adult Learning There is something new at Temple Beth Tikvah!

Adult Education is now Adult Learning. No homework, no tests, - just opportunities for rich Jewish learning. We hope to make learning more entertaining and diverse!

Additionally, we will be offering two Melton classes at TBT and will be involved with the Jewish Book Festival. We will keep you informed about learning opportunities in our community such as Seniors For Enriched Living, a monthly senior luncheon, and a women’s interfaith discussion group.

Notes from Cantor Kassel Earlier in the summer I attended the American Conference of Cantors (ACC) convention, this year held in Minneapolis, MN. There was an over-riding theme of the conference: B’chol Kol – Every Voice Counts. One of our Keynote Speakers was Becca Hornstein who is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Council for Jews with Special Needs in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Council is a non-profit human services agency that provides assistance to children and adults who have developmental, intellectual, physical disabilities, attention and learning disabilities, sensory and mobility impairments, and emotional and behavioral disorders. The agency provides the necessary resources and supports to enable participation in religious services, schools, camps and recreational programs in the local Jewish community. Becca Hornstein’s keynote presentation was one of the finest I’ve heard and she so adeptly used humor to illustrate how we are all created in God’s image and are deserving of full and active participation in Jewish life and learning. Our own Bible is full of people whom today we would say were met with challenges such as ADHD, learning differences and physical disabilities. Hornstein herself is the mother of two adult children with disabilities who are thriving in their professions and contributing to their communities.

I am proud that at TBT we are taking a healthy look at how we can better be an inclusive community in both our Religious School and the physical facility. There is always more to be done but being aware of these needs is increasingly on the radar of Jewish institutions.

As a new year begins (in terms of the ‘school’ calendar) we look forward to pushing the doors wide open to engage you in all facets of synagogue life. If you’ve been suppressing your musical talents, please make them known to me! If you’d like to chant Torah or learn how to chant Torah – let me know! If you are a parent of young children but wish you could attend a ‘regular’ Shabbat service, then please take advantage of the “Shabbat Experience” services/programs that will be offered throughout the year. If there are barriers of which we are unaware, please bring them to our attention. Candles, Challah & Niddah: Women's Roles in Judaism throughout the Centuries Instructor: Rabbi Pamela Jay Gottfried

Beginning in the Garden of Eden and arriving at the ordination of Orthodox Women as rabbis, we will explore the ways in which women's roles in Jewish life and law have evolved by examining both traditional texts and personal narratives.

While each class will cover an independent topic, participants in the full course of study will come to appreciate the breadth and depth of Jewish law related to women.

News Flash: The High Holy Days are Right Around the Corner Summer is in full swing and yet here I am thinking about the High Holy Days. Actually, the Board, office staff and of course our clergy have been busy making preparations for the holidays for some time now. I can’t remember the last time the holidays fell so early.

Hanukkah falls ON Thanksgiving this year. Wow, so much planning, yet so little time. I don’t think the average congregant (ok, I know we are all above average) realizes how much pre-planning and work is required to ensure that the holidays flow smoothly, allowing us to enjoy the Days of Awe in our own meaningful way.

We are making progress slowly but surely.

Our 2012-2013 annual campaign that ended June 30th was very successful raising $106,000. We exceeded our monetary goal of $100,000 but we did fall quite a bit short in achieving our goal of 100% congregant participation, which we hope to do this coming year.

Soon we will kick off the 2013-2014 annual campaign.

We have already received a $25,000 matching pledge gift for the new campaign, so our first $25,000 collected

by December 15, 2013 will result in $50,000.

I am excited and enthused as we begin a new year at Temple Beth Tikvah. Having had the past few months to get my arms around all the programs and events planned for this new year, I am certain you will find activities, programs and services that will engage you and your family.

The High Holy Days begin a period of renewal for each of us as individuals, and for our congregation as a whole.

We should all use this time to reflect upon what is important to ourselves, our families, our friends, and our community. Through the continued hard work of our membership Ron Swichkow committee as well as our office staff and clergy, we have President added more new families in the last 60 days then we have in the same time frame of recent years. What is especially exciting is that our new families are coming from a wide cross section, including families with young children, middle age families and seniors. That tells me we are meeting our congregants’ needs and that, my friends, is what TBT is all about.

The House committee has also been hard at work this past year. We have replaced three large heating units, cleaned, repaired and painted the front and side of our building, repaired the school wing roof and are in the process of renovating our sound system. We are hopeful we can soon begin the large task of replacing the carpet throughout our building. Our project list seems endless as we continue to make our campus safer, more beautiful

Religious School The religious school is busy preparing for an exciting new school year. We are fortunate to have our dedicated teachers returning for the 2013-2014 school year and we are looking forward to welcoming two new teachers to the Temple Beth Tikvah teaching faculty as well. We are all working together diligently to make this upcoming school year a wonderful experience.

I am thrilled that we have received so many registration forms. If you have not mailed your registration form to the office yet, please do so as soon as possible. This is the only way we can ensure your child a place in his/her appropriate classroom and have enough materials/books on the first day of school. If you need a registration form, you can call the school office at 770-642-4168, email us at rschool@bethtikvah.com, or download it from the website www.bethtikvah.com.

The religious school office is open throughout the summer. If we can be of assistance to you, please contact us. Summer is a very busy time preparing for the upcoming school year. The office can use the valuable help of parent/student volunteers. If you are available and interested we would appreciate your help.

Early Childhood Education Center Being a parent is the most difficult, yet most rewarding job in the world. There is no handbook or degree to prepare us for the daily challenges we face. Still we face those challenges head on and do the best we can to provide, encourage, care for, prepare, and love our children. But in order to be successful in all of our parenting tasks, we also must rely on help from others. Family, friends, teachers, coaches, clergy and others, all play an important role in “raising” our children. We are often reminded of the famous saying, “It takes a village to raise a child”, and it truly does. But as parents, how much are we relying on members of our village?

So...let me see if this sounds familiar to you. We drop our little one at school, knowing that for a few hours he/she will be well taken care of and that he/she will learn something new that day. We then speed out of the parking lot to spend our valuable hours doing errands, going to doctor appointments, working, and waiting for the cable guy. Before we know it, we are sitting in carpool line, picking up our preschooler and then off to accomplish more goals in our hectic day. We ask our exhausted child, “How was your day?”, “What did you do?”, “Who did you play with?”, “Did you have fun?” These questions are answered with, “I don’t know”, “Nothing”, “Suzy bit Bobby”, and “I found a rock on the playground.” We then continue about our day leaving all of the new learning that just happened in our midst.

Our children’s learning experiences must extend beyond the walls of school. As parents, we must recognize and take advantage of all of the “teachable moments” that occur on a daily basis. The “village” teachers are done for the day, and now it is our turn. What a child learns in a Jewish Early Education Center goes beyond a typical learning experience. We encourage children to grow as Jews and to become lifelong learners. It is within our walls that children learn to express themselves as individuals as they come to learn and live a Jewish life.

The values and traditions that are taught only become a part of who they are, if those same values and traditions continue to be taught at home. Celebrating Shabbat with your child is a wonderful way to begin a meaningful tradition with your family, while also making your child feel valued as he/she takes pride in what was learned at school by reciting the Sabbath prayers.

It is the little things that make a difference in shaping our children.

Our village is a special one. One that we are proud to be a part of. We are always there to help, love and support, but in order to raise a “whole” child, all members of the village must work and cooperate together.

B’nai Mitzvah Caila Jordan Bauman will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on August 3, 2013. Caila is the daughter of Alisa and Steve, and sister to Cameron. She is the granddaughter of Kathy and Jerome Shainberg of Nashville, Tennessee and Charles and Jeanette Bauman of Atlanta, Georgia. Caila will be entering the 8 th grade at Crabapple Middle School. She enjoys dancing, singing and hanging out with her friends and family. She is excited about leading the congregation, her family, and friends in prayer as she becomes a Bat Mitzvah.

Remi Klein will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on August 3, 2013. Remi is the daughter of Catherine Klein and Andrew Klein and the sister of Adam and Chana Klein. She is the granddaughter of Evelyn Klein and Susan and Jim Wilburn. Remi enjoys playing the piano, drawing, and running. Remi is an eighth grade honors student at Northwestern Middle school. Her favorite mitzvah project was volunteering at an Alzheimer's center.

Owen Michael Steinberg will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on August 10, 2013. Owen is the son of Brian and Jennifer Steinberg, and brother to Ethan and Aubrey. He is the grandson of Jay and Lois Steinberg of Lower Gwynedd, PA and Robert and Carol Szoka of Sebring, FL. Owen is a seventh grader at Hightower Trail Middle School in East Cobb. He loves sports and plays for the Pope Jr. Basketball Team. His other favorite past times include wakeboarding, listening to music and spending time with his friends and family. His favorite Mitzvah project was helping coach special needs adults in basketball with two of his good friends. Owen is excited about becoming a Bar Mitzvah and looks forward to sharing this special day with the congregation, his family and friends.

Liam Benjamin Frank will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on August, 10, 2013. Liam is the son of Gail and Stephan, and brother to Noah. He is the grandson of Stanford and Margaret Ann Shulman of Atlanta, Georgia and Gary and Barbara Frank of La Jolla, California. Liam is a rising eighth grader at Elkins Pointe Middle School where he plays the viola for the school orchestra and participates on the math team. His hobbies include following the Braves, playing basketball, and designing video games. Liam is participating in the Remember Us Program and will be sharing his special day in memory of a child from France, Claude Benishu, who lost his life in the Holocaust.

Parker Addison Salinas will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on August 24, 2013. Parker is the daughter of Chad and Jules Salinas and sister to Sloan and Lawson. She is in the 7th grade at Elkins Pointe Middle School where she participates in the drama club, writes for the school newspaper and plays flute in the school band. Her hobbies include all forms of dance, art, music, reading, movies and, of course, her friends. She is a principal dancer with Company 23. She is thrilled to be called to Torah along side of her father, Chad.

Eli David Weiner became a Bar Mitzvah on June 22, 2013. He is a rising 7th grader at High Meadows School and plays baseball for the Sandy Plains Wildcats.

JF&CS - Tools for Aging The High Holidays are here, and many of us will be spending time with the older adults in our families. As you do, pay attention. Because we often have not seen our parents in a while—at least not to the extent of time we spend together in synagogues and at meals—some changes may be more noticeable. The holiday season is a good opportunity to observe your parents or older relatives and think about ways to help them remain independent.

Following are just a few warning signs that Mom and Dad may be in need of help: 1. Spoiled food that doesn’t get thrown away 2. Difficulty with walking, balance and mobility; unexplained bruising 3. Confusion when performing once-familiar tasks 4. Noticeable decline in grooming habits and personal care 5. Dirty house, extreme clutter and dirty laundry piling up 6. Late payment notices, bounced checks and calls from bill collectors 7. Poor diet or weight loss 8. Loss of interest in hobbies and activities 9. Changes in mood or extreme mood swings 10. Forgetting to take medications —or taking more than the prescribed dosage 11. Unexplained dents and scratches on a car

Breast Cancer Survivor Group Comes to TBT I am happy to announce Temple Beth Tikvah will be hosting our first Breast Cancer Survivor meeting on Thursday, August. 15th at 7:00 p.m. The meetings will be held once a month.

In addition, the meetings are for all interested people who have had cancer, who are going through treatment or surgeries, and /or who have been recently diagnosed, as well as for those who might have questions pertinent to breast cancer.

The meetings are for sharing experiences, meeting others and gathering information regarding diagnoses, surgeries, and genetic testing from various professionals. The meetings are sponsored by The Kehillat Chesed/Caring Committee at Temple Beth Tikvah and are open to all in the Jewish community. Our first speaker, Karen Korshak, the President of the GA Breast Cancer Coalition will present in August on The Faces of Breast Cancer. One Good Deed� is looking for both volunteers and care recipients!

This Atlanta based grassroots non-profit organization utilizes volunteers of all ages to assist and improve the quality of life for family care givers and their loved ones. Volunteers are matched with Care Recipients and commit to spending a few hours a month as a friendly visitor and perform more than One Good Deed.
