A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SHUVAL-WEINER TBT B’YACHAD- TBT Together Since the last issue of the Kol Tikvah, the world is a different place! The last time we gathered as a community was on March 8th with the celebration of Purim. Just one day later TBT was radically transformed from a brick and mortar synagogue to an on-line virtual Kehillah (sacred community). The speed by which we needed to adjust is rather incredible if you think about it. To date, we are doing everything in our power to live up to our name Beth Tikvah- House of Hope.

Beginning with Shabbat services on March 13, Cantor Kassel and I went “live” conducting Friday evening and Saturday morning services from an empty TBT Sanctuary. Stream Spot and Facebook Live brought the community into our doors virtually. Each and every service has been a unique experience, with a great deal of trial and error. Our goal has been and continues to be: to bring joy through sacred engagement, comfort to those who are in need and all while striving to keep our TBT community connected. We are compassionately distancing ourselves for the safety of all, but striving to remain connected utilizing the modalities that we have available to us.

My family and I have been concluding Shabbat with Havdallah on Facebook Live. It is wonderful to see how many of you have joined us. In the weeks to come, other members of the TBT family have offered to “host” Havdallah. What a wonderful way to share our love and the gifts of our heart with one another!

Both Cantor Kassel and I are sharing daily affirmations, teachings and songs on Facebook and Instagram to connect with the congregation and to raise spirits.

Over the past three weeks, the clergy, along with the members of the Board of Trustees, have been making calls to the entire membership of the congregation to check in. We want to see how people are fairing. Find out what needs there are and who can help whom. It is so very important that we remain connected. Every member of the BOT has a particular list of TBT folks to be their “partners” during this time of Compassionate-Distancing. If you have not received a call yet, please let us know in the Temple office, that way we can be sure that we have the proper contact information for you.

I am grateful to the people who have reached out to me to offer various forms of assistance. Kehillat Chesed is coordinating specific aspects of outreach to those who are homebound and alone. If you know of someone who may be in need, please reach out to me at rabbi@bethtikvah.com. For those who would like to make a special tzedakah contribution to assist with food resources or other COVID-related needs, please direct your tzedakah to the Kehillat Chesed/Caring Fund.

Other areas of contact involve our TBT children. The education team of Sheri Baker, Linda Siegel, Bobbee Griff and Suzanne Hurwitz along with all of the teachers have been incredible. Every program reaching Tots through HS grads shifted on a dime.

From virtual scavenger hunts, to one-on-one Hebrew tutoring, virtual story hour, and on-line youth group meetings, just to share a few examples; our TBT kids are staying enriched and connected.

While some adult programs are taking place on-line, the Cantor and I are still working on methods to bring social and educational opportunities to the adult community who may not be as computer savvy.

Finally, every TBT family now has the ability to be in communication with other TBT members through our ShulCloud portal. The membership directory is easy to access and I encourage everyone to check their personal family profile as well as reaching out to another TBT person just to say “Shalom!”. This will help to keep us all connected during this bizarre time of physical distancing.

There is still much we have to learn and every day we strive to pivot from what we were doing to what we need to do today, in this ever changing reality we find ourselves in.

As you begin to think about Passover, may you and your family and friends be blessed with wholeness, health and contentment.

NOTES FROM CANTOR KASSEL In 1985 the Colombian Nobel Prize -winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez published his novel “Love In The Time Of Cholera”.

In the past few weeks our lives have been turned upside down and we soon will be observing “Passover In The Time of COVID-19”.

The question “Why is this night different from all other nights?” will hold new, contemporary meaning for us. I would like to advocate that ‘virtual’ community is better than no community at all.

Each day I see more resources popping up on the Internet about how to hold a virtual seder. I will gladly share pdfs of parts of the Haggadah with you as well as sound files for some of the songs that are typically sung at the seder. Just email me at cantorkassel@bethtikvah.com if I can help you out. As the Greek philosopher Plato is credited for saying: Necessity is the mother of invention.

We are learning a lot about ourselves in this newfound reality of social distancing. Many are enjoying not having to dress as formally as they would to get ‘work’ done. Many are enjoying more time with family pets. Many are enjoying relief from Atlanta traffic. There is a list of positives to go along with the long, obvious and serious list of negatives. We are having to pay more attention to how we draw upon internal as well as external strength. The NOT running around so much gives us more opportunity to reflect. The heightened worry about the known and unknown can leave us feeling very vulnerable in ways we haven’t felt before.

Passover is about liberation from what has oppressed us. One of the most poignant texts of the Haggadah is “B’chol dor vador chayav adam lirot et atzmo k’ilu hu yatza mi-Mitzrayim.” To paraphrase: While the story of the Exodus happened long ago, we are obligated to personalize the experience of oppression and consequent liberation. What is oppressive to us as individuals and as a community? I truly believe that we can use this newfound homebound time...to reflect on this opportunity to personalize the journey from that which holds us back towards the liberation of becoming who we are meant to become.

PASSOVER Why is This Year different from all other years?

Passover is a time for family and friends to gather together sharing in the retelling of our sacred narrative Yitziat Mitzrayim. The highlight for many are the traditional foods and sacred remembrances, that make for L’Dor V’Dor moments. 2020/5780 will certainly go down in the history of our lifetime as a significant year for many reasons.

Compassionate Distancing practices requiring us to define gathering in a whole new way. Most people will join a virtual Seder, either with family and friends, or with “new friends” from across the Jewish world. Either way, this year will be a unique year!

More than our gathering practices being stretched, so to is access to special Passover foods. Many are finding that the needs of Passover are incredibly challenging. Rabbis from across our Jewish religious spectrum are responding with modified and even new recommendations for this year’s ritual practice. Knowing that many in our TBT family, when it comes to Passover, tend to follow more stringent rules of kashrut, we have chosen to share these guidelines from the Rabbinical Assembly of the Conservative Movement. Some basic steps to consider this year include: Matzah - One is obligated to avoid hametz throughout Passover, but the obligation to eat matzah is limited to fulfilling the rituals of the first/second night seder alone.

Therefore, communities should ensure that each home has at least enough matzah for each person to fulfill the obligation of ,‫אכילת מצה‬eating matzah, for [each] seder.

Think, basically, about one piece of matzah per person, per seder.

Karpas - the spring greens. This can be any vegetable. [In Israel, boiled potato is a common food for karpas] Maror - If horseradish is not available, people are encouraged to find other vegetables or fruits that can bring a tear to the eye if consumed raw: hot peppers, fresh ginger, mustard greens, raw lemon. In Israel, romaine lettuce is commonly used as maror.

Egg and Roasted Shankbone on Seder Plate -- A roasted beet and rice (if consuming kitniyot) may take the place of the shankbone and egg.(Pesahim 114b) Kitneyot: Due to the unprecedented disruptions in the food supply, the CJLS encourages everyone to consider putting aside the Ashkenazic custom of Kitneyot, eschewing legumes (beans, lentils, corn and rice), if only for Passover 5780 (2020).

ECEC UPDATE—SHERI BAKER & LINDA SIEGEL I sit here, wondering exactly how or where to begin. Currently, school is closed due to COVID-19. Although everyone's routine has been turned upside down, our incredible teachers have done a superior job staying connected to their students and families. Learning in our school is very organic and natural, and now that we cannot meet in person, we have to come up with ways to stay connected without being physically present.

The teachers are Facetiming the children in their classes each week. As well, we have a regular Zoom virtual circle time, and teachers are uploading videos of themselves reading books, telling jokes, and doing their best to stay connected in these uncertain times. We have linked videos or virtual tours of zoos, and POV rides at Disney World. We are creating digital learning opportunities without our physical presence. As well, each family has received a subscription to one of the leading preschool education apps to ensure children are continuing to develop and grow at their unique pace. We hope to be back at school soon with our friends.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL UPDATE—SUZANNE HURWITZ My, how things have changed since the last time I sat down to write an article for the Kol Tikvah! As news of the coronavirus and what we could do to prevent its spread became apparent, we at TBT quickly changed gears.

For example, I hope you’ve still enjoying our beautiful Shabbat services, but now from the comfort of your homes. Our Facebook page has been filled with engaging videos and ideas to keep you entertained. As far as the religious school, our teachers didn’t miss a beat. They quickly changed their in-person lessons into virtual ones, picking up new technology to remain connected with their students. The result has been amazing. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, please enjoy some images from our first Sunday of virtual learning…

In addition to our teachers, thank you to our families for making this possible. We look forward to staying connected with you, one way or another, now and always!

RHONDA POVLOT, PRESIDENT Wow, just wow. It seems our world has turned upside down. I sincerely hope you are all healthy and safe.

We are truly blessed here at Temple Beth Tikvah to have such a loving and caring community. Our clergy, Rabbi Shuval-Weiner and Cantor Nancy Kassel, have done such an amazing job transitioning to our “new normal” of online services, cyber meetings, phone calls, and Facebook check-ins. Rabbi and Cantor, thank you so very much! It helps us to feel connected and not so isolated. It is our sincerest hope you have all been contacted by someone from our Board of Trustees checking in to see if you need anything. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to someone or the office if you need anything. We are here for you.

Passover is starting next week. This year, Virtual Seders will be a part of many of our tables (and we thought adding an orange was a big deal, wow!). We will now have laptops, tablets and phones at our tables to include our loved ones. As Rabbi Richard Address said in a recent article, “Next Year in Jerusalem” will still echo in countless homes. Yet, the echo will be electronic, in many cases. Our Afikomen of normalcy will still be hidden. We are all faced with living in each moment, in each day, knowing that so much is so out of our control.”

Our healthcare workers and our first responders have become heroes. We thank our grocery store employees and delivery drivers. Neighbors are helping neighbors with errands. Little acts of kindness are popping up everywhere it seems. We all seem to be learning slowly that we are all responsible for one another. We are all really connected in this world after all.

At our Seders we will look to Elijah’s cup. We will open the door and maybe this year, more than the cat will come in. I have seen on the news that due to the “stay-at-home” orders there is less pollution. The waterway streets in Venice are clear and fish can be seen again. Maybe just maybe there is Hope. Perhaps it is about more than just “me” and maybe more of a collective “we” and a universal “us” in this together. Pesach, with its story, symbols and traditions, ultimately ends in hope. So too can this pandemic of COVID-19.

As I enter my last month as President of Temple Beth Tikvah, I am hopeful for our community. Joe Dunn will become President May 3. I am extremely grateful for Joe’s friendship and have full faith in his leadership strength and knowledge. Joe is a very thoughtful and kind person. He has a beautiful and supportive wife in Waynah. His children and grandchildren are equally supportive and great. Joe brings an exceptional amount of business and accounting experience, as well as a law degree, to the board table, but none of that compares to his calm problem-solving skills. He is stepping up as President at TBT when we need someone with his talents. I wish Joe nothing but success. I will remain on board for support and assistance.

This year we are faced with the difficult task of having our TBT Annual Meeting be virtual. This meeting will take place via Zoom on Sunday, May 3 at 10 AM. We will approve the 2020-2021 Slate of Lay Leadership, the Budget, as well as any other muchneeded synagogue business. In the next week or so, you should all receive mail and emails with instructions on how to log in and participate in easy step-by-step instructions. You do not need the Zoom app to participate. You can also participate by telephone. This will all be explained in the follow-up instructions. We are saddened by this, but know it is in the best interest of our individual congregants that we all remain healthy yet carry on the day-to-day business of TBT. I am forever grateful for your support and kindness over the last 25 years. I look forward to 25-50 plus more years together at Temple Beth Tikvah.

YOUTH GROUP No doubt, the last few weeks have been tough and they will continue to have an impact on us, even once we are able to resume our normal lives. One of the hardest hit groups, though, is our high school and college seniors whose academic careers and lives came to a screeching end in March when they found out that, not only would they not be returning to school or campus, but that all of their senior activities and celebrations were canceled. That means, no chance to stop and celebrate, reflect on their past years, or say goodbye to their friends and the places that have become their communities and meant so much to them.

But, why is this such a big deal?

“Saying goodbye allows us time to honor the importance that we have in each other’s lives. It gives us the opportunity to form words for feelings that we might be recognizing for the very first time. A good goodbye honors our past, codifies the choices we made, recognizes life experiences with others and the world around us, and provides closure, as we move on to our next chapter.” (The Importance of the Goodbye by Cherilynn Veland) So, how can we help our seniors recognize this milestone in their lives, celebrate their accomplishments, and say goodbye? I know, it’s not nearly the same, but here’s a few suggestions: Give them time to feel these emotions, to grieve this loss, because it is a real loss. They need time to mourn before they can move on.

Coordinate with friends and find a way to celebrate either virtually or sometime in the future. Maybe virtually you all get together and share your favorite memories and moments.

Have your senior write a letter to themselves, something they can read in years to come. Or have them write letters to the people who made their high school or college careers special.

Create shared online photo albums or scrapbooks to send to friends.

Whatever it is, don’t just let this time pass by, find something meaningful for your senior, something that can help them to recognize this important milestone. Being a senior and graduating is always significant, but for the class of 2020 it will be a truly unique and memorable year.

Helpless and confused, We turn to You Seeking comfort, faith and hope.

Teach us God, to turn our panic into patience, And our fear into acts of kindness and support.

Our strong must watch out for our weak, Our young must take care of our old.

Help each one of us to do our part to halt the spread of this virus Send strength and courage to the doctors and nurses In the frontlines of this battle, Fortify them with the full force of their healing powers.

Send wisdom and insight to the scientists Working day and night across the world to discover healing treatments.

Bless their efforts, God. Fill our leaders with the wisdom and the courage To choose wisely and act quickly.

Help us, God, to see that we are one world, One people Who will rise above this pandemic together.

Send us health God, Watch over us, Grace us with Your love, Bless us with Your healing light.

SISTERHOOD Shalom TBT Sisterhood!

I am sitting in my living room on that spot on the couch that now seems to have my outline indented permanently. Every day is pretty much the same as the day before. I have built a 1000 piece puzzle and immediately broke it down so I could pass it along to my future daughter-in-law who is holed up in Buckhead with my son. I have sloppily started a paint by number and have to use a magnifying glass to paint the tiny little spots and see the tiny little numbers. I have cooked so many dinners and am trying to be creative but it’s getting hard. My husband never complains. My house smells like a swimming pool.

A trip to Publix takes on a whole new meaning, and I plan that excursion for days before it’s actually going to happen.

My daughter is in New York and will not leave. Everything is scary and the unknown is terrifying. This is our new normal-FOR NOW. I am confident that things will return to the old normal. I wish I could see into the future to know when. We all do. So as we are all social distancing, please try to see forward to a time when we can congregate once more, and think about how lucky we are to be able to meet, to participate, to enjoy each other’s company, be it at a service, a celebration, a planned function, or even just a meeting.

Stay healthy, be safe, and may we come out of this experience with a new appreciation of the little things we all take for granted.

In midrash Pirke DeRabbi Elezer, Chapter 45, we are told that in the incident of the Golden Calf, the women refused to relinquish their earnings to the men who were building the idol. As a reward, God gave them an extra holy day each month, free from work.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN Hope this finds you and your families healthy and safe in the uncharted waters we are navigating. TBT and our clergy are doing yeoman’s work keeping us spiritually engaged and connected to our TBT community, and we hope and pray this runs its course sooner rather than later. Thanks to all who have generously donated to Campaign 33. We have purposely gone silent the last 2 weeks as our members focus on more important things, and we will remain silent until things return to normal. There are online and other options to support the campaign and of course, we welcome that. Meantime, stay safe and healthy and disciplined in social distancing. Thank you.

Our giving opportunities offer something for everyone. In keeping with our mission, our fundraising initiatives focus on several broad categories that support the work we do. Your gift(s) to one or more of these funds is greatly appreciated.

General Fund– This goes to where the need is greatest and allows the Temple the most flexibility in directing your contribution dollars.

Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund – Donations are used for charitable giving at the Rabbis’ discretion.

Building Fund- Donations are used to pay down the building debt.

Cantors’ Fund – Donations are used for charitable giving at the Cantor’s discretion.

Annual Giving Campaign – The Annual Fund is a critical source of income to the Kehillat Chesed Fund– These funds are used to support individuals during Temple, helping us make up the difference between revenues from member- times of need such as providing meals of consolation, and other acts of ship dues and other fees, and our actual operating costs. kindness.

Temple Beth Tikvah Endowment Fund – The endowment helps to pay down the mortgage, and when completed will help to secure our congregation’s significant program needs and ensure our future financial stability.

Tikkun Olam Fund – The purpose of this fund is to promote and support social justice and community service efforts, particularly those that encourage giving and volunteering in partnership with our synagogue.

Preschool Enrichment Fund – This fund provides for staff development workshops, parent education, enrichment specialists, and special equipment for the preschool.

Campership/Israel Fund– These monies are used to provide scholarships for children to attend summer camp, retreats, study programs or Israel experiences.

Michael Zalkin Memorial Library Fund- Donations are used to purchase books and other library improvements.

Prayer Book Fund– Used to purchase books used for the purpose of conducting a service (Siddurim, Chumashim, Shiva minyan books, etc)

Torah Fund- Donations provide for the maintenance and upkeep of our Torah scrolls and dressings.

Education Scholarship Fund- helps to provide need-based scholarship assistance to families attending Religious education classes at TBT.
