Bonnie Friedman Emily & Milt Gottschalk Rabbi Bryan Wexler

Bonnie was born and grew up in Philadelphia, and moved to Cherry Hill when she married her husband. After he passed away in 1974, she moved back to the Cherry Hill area and needed to find a synagogue for herself and her four children. Bonnie was looking for a synagogue where her children could continue their Jewish education and become part of the larger Jewish community in the area. She attended Temple Beth Sholom services and met Rabbi Lewis, and that was all it took. She joined and enrolled the kids in Hebrew School at TBS and immediately got involved. She also convinced her parents, Sam and Myra Zaroff to join as well. Bonnie and her second husband, Nathan, fell in love with the congregation but especially with Rabbi Lewis. Over the many years of membership, they celebrated many happy and joyous occasions there. Her sons, Saul and Joshua, both had their Bar-Mitzvahs there, and her oldest daughter, Jill, was married there shortly after moving to the new building in Cherry Hill. All four of Bonnie’s children; Jill, Jacki, Saul, and Joshua attended Hebrew School at Temple Beth Shalom and were confirmed there. (The proof is in the hallway outside the restrooms where all their individual class confirmation pictures now hang!) Over the years, there have been very few things at Temple Beth Sholom that Bonnie did not volunteer for and become active in. She has been a member of Sisterhood, Hazak, Membership Committee, Hesed, Social Advocacy, and Succession Planning. Her next goal? To join the Men’s Club, so she too can participate in all their activities as well! Even after her kids left home for college, Bonnie stayed extremely active. She has been engaged in many different roles at Temple Beth Sholom and feels a strong sense of responsibility and compassion for her Jewish community as a whole. Her TBS congregation has become part of her extended family and it has remained that way ever since. After losing her husband Nathan in 2010, and then her mother just weeks later, Bonnie doubled down on her efforts to stay involved and became busy with weekly Shabbat services and joining just about every activity that involved helping others and giving back to the community. She has also been involved for many years as a friendly visitor for Jewish Family and Children’s Service. To this day, she remains dedicated to helping bring Judaism and the local Jewish Community as a whole into the homes of those who may not be as able to get out as often as they’d like. Bonnie feels a sense of responsibility to her Jewish community and being Jewish. She is grateful and blessed to have found the Temple Beth Sholom community and plans on staying just as involved for many years to come.

Milt and Emily Gottschalk both grew up in New York State. They met years later in Philadelphia when another TBS member arranged for them to meet. After their marriage at TBS In 1990, Emily joined Milt as a member of TBS—their second home for over 30 years. Their children received their religious education from TBS. Together as a family, the Gottschalks have been community volunteers for decades. Today, their son Eric is a social media director working in Manhattan. Their younger son Marc is working (interviewing)…And his wife Caroline works in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Capital One. They reside in Maryland with our “grand pup” Coco. Milt has a Chemical Engineering BS and Master of Engineering degree from Cornell University, and while he was working he also obtained an MBA from the University of Houston. After graduation, Milt spent the bulk of his career at Rohm and Haas working in the areas of manufacturing, process and support, packaging, strategic planning, purchasing and new business development. After his retirement from Rohm and Haas, Milt launched a successful consulting career working with small to mid-size companies needing to refine their warehouse and distribution strategy. Milt is an avid sailor who can be found racing competitively all summer long. Milt’s involvement and contribution to the Jewish Community has continued for decades. Milt’s dedication to various organizations in leadership positions at the Jewish Federation of SNJ, the TBS Board, and Yad LaKashish demonstrate his strong commitment and love for the Jewish community. Emily is an experienced marketer with over 30 years of developing products for the consumer marketplace. She is the founder and CEO of The Garr Group, Inc, a diverse entertainment, and new product development company that sells entertainment and general merchandise to the mass, specialty, and on-line market. Past partners include AARP, Intel, Walmart, Fox, MGM, Kellogg’s, NFL, Kraft, and Major League Baseball. TGG, Inc identifies “white space” opportunities in the marketplace and defines and develops products that uniquely touch consumers’ lives. Previously, she was Marketing Director for Four Seasons Hotels and later for Zany Brainy, a children’s educational toy store that she helped launch. Since 1997, Ms. Gottschalk’s companies have produced over 150 million CD’s/DVDs for the US market and she has developed a proprietary Android tablet called “Real Pad, by AARP” working in partnership with Intel and Walmart. She has created private label brands across the home, sporting goods, and electronics market. She is a graduate of Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration and serves on the board of Anixa Biosciences, a publicly traded biotechnology company. She is co-founder of the Mildred M. Soefer Foundation offering philanthropic support to Jewish causes and sick children, Entrepreneur in Residence for Cornell University and a strategic, marketing consultant to Jewish Federation of Southern NJ and Temple Beth Sholom. The Gottschalk family enjoys spending time together enjoying summers at the beach.

Rabbi Wexler was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. He is the proud son of Ruth and Barry Wexler, brother of Andrea Wexler (Dan Saxe), and grandson of Lee Richmond. Rabbi Wexler discovered his love for Judaism at a young age and quickly decided that he wanted to become a rabbi. What took longer was ultimately finding a home in the Conservative Movement which happened during his time in college, specifically at Brandeis University where he became active in Hillel, ultimately serving as President. Rabbi Wexler graduated with a B.A. in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, Hebrew, and Philosophy. Upon graduation, Rabbi Wexler worked for two years as the Youth Director and Community Educator at Temple Aliyah in Needham, MA. At that point, certain that he had truly found a home in the Conservative Movement, Rabbi Wexler began his studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) where he studied for six years (one of which was in Israel). He was ordained in May 2017, also receiving a Masters in Jewish Education from the William Davidson School of Education.

along with many other talented educators and leaders developing the dynamic HaMakom Teen Engagement program/Kesher Hebrew High School. This cutting-edge program has quickly become the largest teen Jewish educational program in Southern New Jersey, and is recognized throughout the country for its innovative programming and curriculum. Rabbi Wexler is also blessed to plan and lead the TBS Healing Services which he introduced to the community in 2019 and have since grown in frequency, scope, and popularity, comforting many congregants and participants from around the country. Most of all, Rabbi Wexler cherishes the time he gets to spend one-on-one with congregants as he endeavors to ensure that everyone feels seen, heard, valued, and loved. In addition to his responsibilities at TBS, Rabbi Wexler currently serves as the President of the Tri-County Board of Jewish Clergy and is the Rabbinic Chair for the Goodblatt Academy.

TBS has become a tremendous blessing in Rabbi Wexler’s life, but his greatest blessing of all is his family. Rabbi Wexler and Rebecca (Becca) met at Brandeis as undergraduates. Believe it or not, Rabbi Wexler told Becca on their first date that he had plans to become a rabbi (what was he thinking?!) By some miracle, she agreed to a second date, and the rest is history as they have now been married for 13 years. They are the proud parents of seven-year-old twins, Meyer and Gavi, who are in the second grade at Kellman Brown Academy, and of Eliana (18 Upon graduating rabbinical school in 2017, Rabbi Wexler was months old) who is a student in the toddler class of TBS’ Eric blessed to find the most incredible home at Temple Beth Sho- B. Jacobs Early Childhood Education Center. Rabbi Wexler lom where he has been privileged to serve the community for is forever grateful to Becca, Meyer, Gavi, and Eliana for their unending support and love, and hopes they know that they are the past 5+ years. In addition to officiating at lifecycle events, leading Shabbat and holiday services, teaching adult education the light of his life, the center of his universe, and his greatest classes, and serving as a pastoral presence for the congregation, gift from God. Rabbi Wexler also works closely with many TBS groups and The Wexlers have found an incredible home in the South committees including the Young Members Group, the Social Action Committee, the Social Advocacy Committee, the Hesed Jersey Jewish community and especially at TBS. In fact, for them, TBS and home have become synonymous. They thank Committee, and the Sustainability Committee. Rabbi Wexler the TBS community for welcoming them with open arms and loves to teach, and he is blessed to get to teach learners of all only hope that they can give back a small portion of the love, ages, in all of TBS’ schools, and beyond, from our youngest to support, kindness, and generosity that the TBS family has our oldest learners. showered upon them. Upon his arrival at TBS, Rabbi Wexler was tasked with reinvigorating TBS’ teen program. The result was Rabbi Wexler, While a student at JTS, Rabbi Wexler was the Rabbinic Intern for two years at Park Avenue Synagogue in Manhattan, and before that, a Rabbinic Fellow at B’nai Jeshurun also in Manhattan. He spent his various summers as a chaplain at Mount Sinai Hospital, a Rosh Edah (unit head) at Ramah Berkshires, a Rabbinic Fellow at T’ruah, and as a student at Yeshivat Hadar. Rabbi Wexler was also a Wexner Graduate Fellow, a UJA- Graduate Fellow, and a Lefell-AIPAC Fellow.

Message from Rabbi Micah Peltz Dear Friends, Ivdu et Adonai b’simha - “Doing God’s Work with Joy.” This verse comes from the book of Psalms and it appears in our liturgy each morning. The psalm begins with the words Mizmor L’Todah – A Psalm of Gratitude. We are surely grateful tonight for how our honorees have brightened, enriched, and brought so much joy to our kehillah kedoshah, our sacred community, of TBS. Bonnie Friedman has brought joy to so many people at TBS for so many years. Along with her husband Nathan z’’l, their generosity has made a tremendous impact on our building, our siddurim and mahzorim, and our community. Bonnie is always ready to help whenever there is a need, and doing so brings her so much joy. Her smile has welcomed many people over the years to our services, programs, and to our gift shop. She has set an incredible example for her children, grandchildren, and all of us. Bonnie’s joy is also our joy, as we are grateful to be able to honor her tonight. Emily & Milt Gottschalk find so much joy in the work they do for our community. As leaders at TBS and in the broader community, their combined thoughtful energy has made an incredible impact. Their support and vision transformed our library and sukkah into the Rabbi Lindemann Lifelong Learning Center and the Gottschalk Family Sukkah, two of my favorite spaces in the building. They have also provided important guidance and support for how we can secure our future through building our endowment. Emily and Milt have passed on their commitment to community to their children, Eric, Marc and Caroline, and we are so grateful for all of the joy they have brought to our community. I remember first meeting Rabbi Bryan Wexler when we were interviewing candidates at JTS. At that first meeting, he stood out as exceptional, but I don’t think we realized how exceptional he truly is. Rabbi Wexler has brought so much joy to our community. His energy and enthusiasm bring joy to our students of all ages, and especially for the HaMakom and Kesher High School programs that he was so integral in reimagining. Rabbi Wexler has also brought comfort through his healing services, and built many relationships here. He is truly a blessing for our TBS Family, and an incredible partner and friend. We are so grateful that he, Becca, Gavi, Meyer, and Eliana have made TBS their home. Tonight, we will reflect and feel the joy that these wonderful leaders have brought to our community. Bonnie, Emily & Milt, and Rabbi Wexler inspire all of us to learn from their example, as we continue to help our beloved kehillah kedoshah, sacred community, of TBS grow and thrive. May they, and we, all continue to do God’s work with joy. Mazal tov! Rabbi Micah J. Peltz

Doing God’s Work With Joy

Message from the President Welcome to our 2023 Temple Beth Sholom Evening of Tribute. What a special evening as we honor four incredible members of our TBS family: Bonnie Friedman, Emily & Milt Gottschalk, and Rabbi Bryan Wexler. It is difficult to put into words how grateful the TBS family is for the love, support and leadership these extraordinary individuals give to our shul. Tonight’s honorees represent all that is good about TBS. Warmth, compassion, community leadership and the values of doing G-d’s work. Continuing to celebrate during times of conflict, in accordance with Jewish tradition, can be difficult. Yet, there is a belief that in this way we strengthen our resilience, hope, and faith in the Jewish people. Israel is in our hearts tonight and always. Temple Beth Sholom’s success would not be possible without the leadership of our clergy, senior staff, lay leaders, and of course, tonight’s honorees. We are blessed to be a part of this amazing community. Thank you for celebrating with us tonight.
