BE HAPPY, IT’S ADAR!
by R abbi M icah P eltzActually, it is not Adar yet, but it will be soon. This new Hebrew month begins on February 22. As the Talmud says, Mishenikhnas Adar Marbin b’Simha – When the month of Adar begins, our joy increases! The happiness of Adar is connected to the holiday of Purim, which we will celebrate with our Purim Extravaganza on Sunday, March 5 and our community celebration on Monday night, March 6. I look forward to experiencing the joy of Adar with you there!
Just because our tradition associates joy with Adar doesn’t mean that on February 22 we automatically become happy. One’s sense of happiness, like any emotion, can be the result of many different factors. Because of this, Adar causes us to ask the question: What does it mean to be happy?
Recently the longest study on human happiness was published. Since 1938, the Harvard Study of Adult Development has been investigating what makes people flourish. It’s the longest and most in-depth longitudinal study ever done. Here is its conclusion: What makes people happy? Good relationships.
It actually concludes that good relationships lead to both happiness and health. What are “good relationships?” These are relationships with family and friends that we take the time to nurture. It can seem like an obvious conclusion, but the truth is that we don’t always put our relationships first. Work, daily responsibilities and, yes, getting absorbed with bingewatching shows or on our phones all take time away from nurturing our relationships. But more than any of these distractions, cultivating relationships brings us meaning and joy.
This, I think, is part of the holiness we speak about when we call ourselves a kehillah kedoshah, a holy community. “Love your neighbor as yourself,” the verse that Rabbi Akiva taught was the general rule of the entire Torah, is found at the center of what scholars call the “Holiness Code” code in the book of Leviticus. Participating in a community, with people who were there with you celebrating your family’s s’mahot, when you needed comfort after a loss, when you joined in a tzedakah project to help those in need, and when you enjoyed marking the joyous holidays of the Jewish calendar, are all ways in which we nurture our relationships with one another. These moments help us nurture our relationships, which in turn give our lives more meaning, and more joy.
Purim is particularly good at helping us learn how to nurture our relationships. In addition to celebrating the holiday with our carnival and hearing Megillat Esther, we also have the mitzvot of mishloah manot (giving gifts to friends) and matanot l’evyonim (giving gifts to the poor). These mitzvot encourage us to connect with others. Giving small gifts nurtures our relationships. The giver feels good for giving, and the receiver feels seen and valued. This is the building block of community. This is the beginnings of holiness.
Well before Harvard initiated this study, our tradition understood the connection between relationships and happiness when it associated Adar with Purim. When we come together as a community, and act towards each other in meaningful and thoughtful ways, we nurture our relationships. May this bring all of us more happiness as we celebrate Purim and discover the joy of Adar together this year.
See you in Shul!

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RON SAFIER

It has been about ten years since TBS embarked on a strategic plan to address various areas such as membership, engagement, and financial sustainability. We began a strategic plan refresh in 2019 and then a pandemic put that on hold along with many other projects. So here we are in 2023, and it is time to revisit our strategic plan as the world has changed quite a bit.
We have retained a consultant to help guide us through the strategic planning process, and we are soliciting feedback from various focus groups to build on our strengths and to meet the evolving needs of our community. This strategic planning process and your input will help us endure as a sacred community and identify some new and innovative ways to engage with each other. We are addressing the following core questions:
1. What does it mean to be part of a sacred community today?
2. What kind of meaningful engagement strategies are you seeking?
3. How should we be utilizing technology to build community?
4. How should we be thinking about and planning for the longterm financial sustainability of the congregation?

5. What is the most meaningful connection point between TBS and you and your family? How do you hope that will grow and/or change over the next few years?
So, what are your thoughts to these questions? We welcome your ideas and suggestions. Feel free to send your responses to our strategic plan co-chairs, Carolyn Jacobs and Jeff Levine, at cmjacobs17@verizon.net and jefflev1048@yahoo.com.

Berakhot Beyond Motzi: Snakes, Kings, Philosphy of Prayer
l ed by R abbi l inde M ann and R abbi K atz
The Second Volume of Masekhet Berakhot contains both Halakhah and Aggadah. Both provide insight into Judaism’s philosophy of prayer. In Jewish tradition, there seems to be a blessing for everything, but is that really so? Are there prayers that should not be offered? Are there spriritual prerequisites for prayer? What makes a prayer or blessing effective? Does the Torah require prayer? Are only fixed prayers acceptable? What about spontaneous prayer? Beyond Motzi, what do we bless...and why?
