MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, RON SAFIER

SAVE THE DATE! On Tuesday, May 16 at 6:45pm we will be conducting an important congregational security training on responding to an active shooter event. Security continues to be our highest priority, and we are continually evaluating our procedures and infrastructure to provide a safe and welcoming environment for our entire TBS community. In recent years we have taken many steps to make our building more secure, implementing new policies such as the one entrance only policy, as well as installing various “target hardening” components such as the bollards and planters, additional exterior and interior cameras, new doors/locks, a new door entry/intercom system, an increase in our usage of security personnel, and other security initiatives that I would be happy to discuss with you. All of the policies and security procedures that we have been implementing have come on the recommendation of various law enforcement agencies.
Another component of keeping our TBS community as safe as possible is having a plan in place for worst case scenarios and conducting drills to practice those plans. We recently conducted Run/Hide/Fight active shooter drills with faculty, staff, and clergy, and it is time once again to practice these drills with the congregation at large. Whether you are a Shabbat “regular,” or only attend services occasionally, we highly encourage and recommend that you attend this drill on May 16 which will last approximately one hour.
The training will be held in the main sanctuary, and the drills will be conducted by the JFED Security team. This training is open to the entire congregation, and we are hoping to get as many attendees as possible, so please try and attend. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you at this important training session. In the meantime, please keep the following in mind:
• Situational awareness is key. Be vigilant, be aware of your surroundings and know where the exit doors are at all times.
• If you see something, say something. If something doesn’t look right, notify a staff member, our security personnel or call police.
• If there is an emergency, call 911.
• If you see an open door that is unattended, please close it.
• Do not open a door to allow anyone in the building who is unfamiliar to you.
If you have any questions, or would like further explanation about our security procedures, please feel free to reach out to me at (856) 751-6663 ext. 218 or via email at rons@tbsonline.org.
