SEFIRAT HAOMER: COUNTING ON ONE ANOTHER

By Rabbi Bryan Wexler, ravbryan@tbsonline.org We are currently in the midst of counting the Omer, the seven complete weeks, forty-nine days between the holidays of Passover and Shavuot. In ancient times, the Omer was a special barley offering that was brought each day between the two holidays. Today, the Omer serves more of a spiritual purpose which is highlighted by the counting of each day (Sefirat HaOmer).

Why count? Moses Maimonides, the Rambam, offers the following answer in the Guide for the Perplexed: Shavuot is the time of the giving of the Torah. In order to honor and elevate this day we count the days from the previous festival until it [arrives], like someone who is waiting for a loved one to arrive, who counts the days by the hours.

This explanation certainly resonates with me this year as Becca and I spent the last few months counting the days in anticipation and excitement for the newest arrival to our family.

We count down to important moments all of the time. We count down the seconds until the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, students count down the days until summer vacation, and more. Counting down conveys excitement.

As such, wouldn’t it make sense to count down the 49 days until Shavuot? But that, in fact is not what we do. Instead we count up. In the evening we say “today is the first day.” Then, “today is the second day.” And so on. Perhaps this is because when we count down to something, we communicate that the time in between doesn’t matter. All that is important is getting to the finish line. Counting down implies excitement but also a sense of “just get this wait over with.”

The days between Passover and Shavuot matter a great deal because we must prepare ourselves emotionally and spiritually to receive the Torah anew. We don’t just care about reaching the finish line but finishing strong. It’s not enough simply to receive the Torah; we have to prepare ourselves for it. And that is an active process.

So too I have learned is the case in pregnancy. It is natural to want to count down the days until a beloved baby arrives.

But instead, women share that they are x weeks and y days into their pregnancy. Just like we count the Omer! In the Talmud, Hillel teaches: Ma’alin BaKodesh V’Ein Moridin — in matters of holiness, we should always ascend and never descend. Our task is to ascend in holiness each and every 2

day. It may be exciting to count down but it is holy and wholesome to count up.

But allow me to offer one more explanation why we count up rather than down during these weeks between Passover and Shavuot. For this explanation I want to focus on the word itself: UP. Now let’s add two letters: ON…. UPON. Yes we count up, but the deeper question the Omer asks us to consider is what do we count on (upon)?

As we look out at our world today, it is unsettling to think that much that we have counted upon in the past: peace, health, reproductive rights, civility, and more are compromised. It is unsettling to know that there is much that we unfortunately cannot count upon today. And thus, it is all the more important that during this period of the Omer we reflect upon what we can in fact still count on.

Who and what can you count upon in your life? Perhaps as a way to mark the Omer this year, you can reach out to them and say thank you. This Omer let us also ask: who counts on us and what can we and must we do to ensure that we can always be counted upon?

Amidst plenty of uncertainty, here is what I know we can count on: Our tradition: Judaism provides us with a moral, ethical, and spiritual foundation that we can always count on.

Our TBS community: we are blessed by a community sustained by love and support which we can always count on.

Our Jewish future: as someone who works closely with our young students and teens, I am confident that the future of Judaism is in good hands.

Perhaps nothing exemplifies this better than our Confirmation Class of 5782. This year’s class is comprised of impressive young adults that despite their Confirmation Israel Trip in December being postponed due to COVID, they have remained committed, held their heads high, and are eagerly preparing to lead services on the first day of Shavuot and share their thoughts about God and Judaism with the congregation. I am SO proud of our Confirmation students, and I wish a hearty mazal tov to them and their families.

May we be inspired by our students, and by one another as we journey together during this period of the Omer, a time when we count up, and we also reflect on what we can count UPON. May we always count upon one another.

MESSAGE FROM RON SAFIER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As we near the end of the current fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30, we prepare for membership renewal for the coming year, as membership and dues at TBS are renewed on a yearly basis. So, keep an eye out for an email next week with information regarding the membership renewal process for 2022/2023 (5783), including a link that will allow you to submit your membership renewal electronically. There will also be hard copies available of the membership renewal packet for those who prefer a hard copy. Our synagogue is in strong financial shape, and we wouldn’t be where we are today, and we wouldn’t be able to offer all the programming that we do, without our congregational membership and your contributions.

We thank you for your support and for renewing your membership at TBS. We will have to implement a modest dues increase for the coming year to keep up with increased costs of goods and services needed to run our synagogue operations. The actual cost per member unit is nearly $2,500 more than our general membership dues, and we are grateful for our Plus Givers, our sponsors, and the generosity of our congregation for supporting us in our mission, and we never allow financial hardship to be a barrier for synagogue membership.

If you are able to contribute more this year, we thank you in advance for your consideration. If finances are a challenge this year and you need a special arrangement, please reach out to me in confidence and we’ll make it work.

With the membership renewal process comes preparations for the High Holy Days and school registrations for the coming year. Services this year for the High Holy Days will once again be in-person and livestreamed. Any COVID protocols applicable to those attending in-person (e.g., requirements, if any, related to vaccinations and masking) will be determined and communicated later this summer, as we get closer to the High Holy Days.

For our schools, any changes to our current COVID protocols, including vaccination requirements, will be determined, and communicated as we get closer to the beginning of the school year.
