AT TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM February and March 2022/5782

IT TAKES TWO TO MAKE THE YEAR GO RIGHT By Cantor Jen Cohen The Jewish calendar is a complicated and beautiful thing. Have you ever looked up your Hebrew birthday? One year it might be five days before your secular birthday; one year it might be four weeks after – difficult to know when to start baking yourself a Hebrew birthday cake. And we all talk every year about the High Holy Days being either “so early!” or “so late this year!” (Why we never consider them just right is a question for another time.) Unlike our solar-based secular calendar, the calendar on which we base our lives as Jews runs on the lunar cycle and contains 354 days to the Gregorian 365 – only 11 days, but over the course of years, they add up. The end of parashat Re’eh in the book of Deuteronomy dictates that our holidays must occur in the proper seasons: Pesah in spring, Shavuot in summer, and Sukkot in the fall. If left to their own devices, those 11 days would, over the course of years, cause the holidays to fall earlier and earlier, eventually switching seasons altogether! So, in the fourth century C.E., Hillel HaNasi, son of Rabbi Judah HaNasi, modified the calendar that had previously been codified by the Sanhedrin in a brilliant way: he created a leap month. But where to put it? Though we tend to think of Tishrei and Rosh Hashanah as the beginning of the year, Judaism has four New Years. Biblically, Nissan – the month of spring and Passover – is the first month of the year. Adar was then considered the final month of the year. So Hillel II did a lot of sophisticated math and determined that they would insert a second month of Adar seven times over the course of a 19-year cycle, thus allowing the holidays to fall in the correct season, if not the same secular calendar month every year.

2

But why two Adars? Why not two Kislevs – let’s double the month that contains Hanukkah! Or how about two Nissans – who wouldn’t appreciate extra time to clean our pantries for Pesah? The series of books called Celebrating the Jewish Year by Paul Steinberg dives deeply into all our Jewish holidays by season and is a great source of information (and is available in our Rabbi Steven C. Lindemann Lifelong Learning Center, of course!) In it, Steinberg writes that Adar was chosen for a practical reason – being the last month, it could be easily tacked on. And really, what more perfect time to be gifted with two Adars than 2022. Why? I think the answer may be found in a teaching from the Talmud, words we sing as Adar enters: Mishenikhnas Adar, Marbim B’simha – When the month of Adar arrives, our joy increases (Ta’anit 29a.) Our joy begins in Adar I, then the second Adar will bring us Purim, a joyful celebration of the miracle of us Jews being saved yet again. Purim comes to lift our spirits in the waning days of winter. We see the days getting longer, but the snow might still be falling, and spring might feel very far away. But we put on our most clever costumes, read the story of Esther and Mordechai in our most dramatic voices, dance and sing, and make our own happiness. Here in our third winter of the pandemic, wondering what variant might be around the corner and praying that our loved ones all stay healthy, how fortunate we are that our calendar gives us an extra month of opportunity to create joy – for our families, for those in need, for our community. On March 16th we finally get to Purim. Our Sisterhood makes it easy and fun to send mishloah manot (have you signed up yet?), we’ll give tzedakah to feed the hungry, put on our masks (the kind that don’t have to cover our noses and mouths), and read the Megillah together in community. What will you do to bring more joy into the world for these next two months of Adar?

MESSAGE FROM RON SAFIER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Let there be light! But not in the tent of meeting! With very cold temperatures and snow in the forecast, and with the number of COVID transmittals and cases trending downward in NJ and Camden County, we made the decision to return the tent. Our hope is that as the COVID numbers continue to decrease, we can slowly start to bring various programming back into the building. Recently we have been providing a grab and go snack for the weekly Shabbat Kiddush, but our goal is to bring the weekly Kiddush back indoors mid-February. Also, if you have been on or near the TBS property at night recently, you may have noticed how beautifully lit the grounds and parking lot are. That’s because we are nearly at completion of the PSE&G lighting and HVAC upgrade project that I have wrote about previously. This project will enable us to cut expenses, while becoming more environmentally friendly, by converting our existing lighting to LED lighting throughout the interior and exterior of the building, and upgrading our older HVAC units, which is scheduled to take place in mid-February. I also want to mention that our Interactive Yahrzeit Display Board is being installed in the coming days, thanks to a very generous donation by Bernie and Judy Platt. The Interactive Yahrzeit Display Board has many features, including: Automatically displays name of loved one on anniversary of Yahrzeit. Quickly and easily search the database of names on the touch screen display. Stores personal profiles, photographs, and achievements of individuals. Picture bio page allows you to upload photos, videos, and text. Strengthens knowledge and appreciation of family’s legacy and history. We will be sending more information in the coming weeks with instructions on how to submit information about your loved ones.

WHO BY FIRE WAR, ATONEMENT, AND THE RESURRECTION OF LEONARD COHEN MATTI FRIEDMAN

SINAI 19 73

Matti Friedman is an award-winning journalist and author. Born in Toronto and based in Jerusalem, he’s currently a contributor to the New York Times Op-Ed Section. A former Associated Press correspondent, Matti’s work as a reporter has taken him from Israel to Lebanon, Morocco, Moscow, the Caucasus, and Washington, DC, and his writing has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Tablet Magazine, and elsewhere. Two essays he wrote about media coverage of Israel after the 2014 Gaza war, for Tablet and The Atlantic, triggered intense discussion and have been shared on Facebook more than 130,000 times. Friedman’s last book, Spies of No Country: Secret Lives at the Birth of Israel, won the 2019 Natan Prize and the Canadian Jewish Book Award for history. In WHO BY FIRE, journalist Matti Friedman gives us a riveting account of Leonard Cohen’s weeks in the Sinai. Drawing on his previously unpublished writing and original reporting, Friedman creates a kaleidoscopic depiction of a harrowing, formative moment for both a young country at war and a singer at a crossroads.

Tuesday Night Talmud

Nazir: Vowing Abstinence for Holiness Led by Rabbis Katz and Lindemann The Nazarite vows abstinence from wine or any grape derivative, cutting his/her hair, and contact with a corpse. Does such a vow really create a higher level of holiness? What does this Tractate teach us about the nature of religion and human nature? How do the stories of Samson, Queen Helena of Adiabene, and Samuel add to our appreciation of these issues? Why does the Talmud devote an entire Tractate to a practice that ceased after the destruction of the Temple? These are just some of the questions raised by the Talmud’s teachings on one of the most esoteric practices found in the Bible. Tuesdays, February 1, 15; March 1, 15 8:15 PM – Zoom
