Children on the Edge was sparked into life by Dame Anita Roddick over 27 years ago. Not long after this, The Body Shop At Home™ began to support them in creating change on a huge scale, through a partnership that has now lasted over 20 years.

SINCE THE START, THE BODY SHOP AT HOME HAS TM

RAISED OVER £1 FOR In the last few years, the focus of our support has been on the work of Children on the Edge in Uganda. In the slum communities surrounding Jinja, children live in appalling conditions and are at risk of abuse, neglect and even child sacrifice.

Through Child Protection Teams, local people are empowered to transform these communities for their children, creating a protective environment and ensuring hope for the future.

RECENTLY, ONE OF THESE TEAMS ENSURED THE RESCUE OF A TWO-MONTH-OLD BABY, WHO HAD BEEN ABDUCTED FROM MASESE III SLUM. The baby’s mother, 17-year-old Agnes, was having a normal morning caring for her new baby when a woman arrived in her doorway acting like a friend.

She tricked Agnes into leaving the baby alone with her and disappeared with the child.

Agnes and her partner Najid were frantic and went to find the chairperson of their local Child Protection Team, who then fought for two months to bring their son

home. This involved local searches, radio campaigns and negotiating with police.

On the day Agnes was reunited with her son she said “I am very happy that I have finally found my son. The lady who stole him thought since am a young girl I would be easily fooled but I am very grateful to the CPT, because if it wasn’t for them, trust me, we wouldn’t have got this far in rescuing him.”

AFTER SUPPORTING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A THRIVING EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT CENTRE IN LOCO SLUM, UGANDA, THE BODY SHOP AT HOME™ HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE BUILDING OF A BRAND-NEW CENTRE IN NEIGHBOURING WANDAGO SLUM. A year ago, through mapping, interviews and tours, Children on the Edge helped children here to identify dangerous and safe areas within their community, and discuss the problems they face in their day to day lives.

One of the issues they spoke of was a lack of schools, so this new Centre will be a step in the right direction to creating access to child friendly, early years education in a safe space.

I joined The Body Shop At Home™ to earn some extra money to treat my 3 children. Just earning an extra £50 a month was all I wanted - I already had a part time job but most of my wages were spent on childcare and commuting. Little did I know the opportunities that would be available to me!

I am a mum of 3 and I used to work ridiculously long hours in my own shop. I was completely exhausted and stressed. I needed a new focus so when I discovered The Body Shop At Home™, I decided to give it a try, more as a fun hobby really than a new business opportunity.

Just 7 months later I became an Area Manager and was able to leave my ‘real’ job. I didn’t think this opportunity would be a viable full time option but it’s helped me pay for holidays, home improvements and treats for my children. Plus the flexibility is amazing - I never miss a school play or trip and I take my children to school every day.

But after just 2 months I had fast-tracked to Area Manager, I was quickly able to give up my shop and I haven’t looked back! I spend more time with my family and I have a rapidly growing team who make me proud every day. I have made so many new friends and have a better social life than I’ve ever known! I can honestly say that this has been the best year of my life and my family agree too!
