Looking Ahead: A Cure for PTSD
We have cherished every one of the 440 grants awarded to our 142 partners over the past 10 years. We look forward to a long future of building on those partnerships to continue learning, exploring and dealing in hope. We also believe its time to devote more of our time and resources to exploring new solutions to the old problem of PTSD. So we're ready to place even bigger bets on psycedelics as a cure for PTSD and are thinking through how, in the next 10 years, we may be able to directly assist people in their own journey to healing. Because PTSD and mental health isn't just a national issue, it's personal.
What is PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychological condition that can result from exposure to traumatic events, serious injury or a physical threat. It occurs in 10-45% of people who experience a traumatic event. Those who develop PTSD are haunted by the memories of their experience, plagued with flashbacks, hypervigilance, anxiety and social withdrawal. It can be very disruptive to their lives.

How can Psychedelic-assisted therapy help?
In order to heal, patients must teach their own bodies to feel safe, to cease being in a constant state of high alert. They must be able to talk about their trauma to understand what really happened. The challenge is that reliving trauma can be very distressing and often debilitating. That's where psychedelics can help. Psychedelic-assisted therapy allows patients to get into an optimal zone, a window of tolerance, so that they can go back to the trauma, understand what happened and gain a different perspective and a resolution.
Our Foundation is joining forces with organizations on the cutting edge of psychedelic research. We won't stop until this cure for PTSD is available, accessible and affordable, particularly for our nation's veterans and active duty service members. Join us on this learning journey!
