Memorable Moments 2021
Over the past 10 years there have been many moments that have taken our breath away, brought a tear to our eye or made our hearts swell. Here are a few we’d like to share with you.
STRENGTH & RESILIENCY
Bob & I visited Haiti not long after the 2010 earthquake. The people of Haiti captured our hearts. Resilient and strong, they were eager to build a more promising future. Inspired by their spirit, we joined forces with Hope for Haiti to help construct schools, dig wells and build sanitation blocks in rural communities. We returned to Haiti again a few years later. The success of the initial projects drove us to build a community health center and fund mobile health clinics to rural locations. Today, Hope for Haiti continues to provide access to education, healthcare, clean water and infrastructure in 24 communities across Southern Haiti.

ART HEALS
Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona came to our YAM Worldwide headquarters in 2013 to showcase their exhibit called “Pieces of Me." The exhibit was part of their Professional Artist Series program where girls living in foster care were paired with professional artists to create art. They were taught to express their feelings– sadness, anger, rejection – on a canvas. Renee and I, and the YAMWW employees who joined us, were captivated as the girls explained the meaning behind their art. Years later, our employees still talk about the impact this experience had on them.

MORE THAN A COOKIE
There’s something inspiring about watching girls hustle to reach their goals. I got to see girls flex their business and entrepreneurial muscles by perfecting their cookie selling pitch, having a clear plan for reaching their goals, and utilizing their financial skills to manage their inventory. I was blown away by these young leaders!

RETURN TO HOPE
Natural disasters have a way of robbing you of hope. I saw this firsthand as I walked the streets of Lake Charles, Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura in 2020. Houses and businesses torn apart. Personal belongings destroyed. It was rough. But I also got to see hope. Hundreds of Team Rubicon volunteers, from across the country, showing up to rebuild the lives of total strangers. That’s hope.

Looking ahead A CURE FOR PTSD
We have cherished every one of the 440 grants awarded to our 142 partners over the past 10 years. We look forward to a long future of building on those partnerships to continue learning, exploring and dealing in hope. We also believe its time to devote more of our time and resources to exploring new solutions to the old problem of PTSD. So we're ready to place even bigger bets on psycedelics as a cure for PTSD and are thinking through how, in the next 10 years, we may be able to directly assist people in their own journey to healing. Because PTSD and mental health isn't just a national issue, it's personal.
What i s PTSD? Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychological condition that can result from exposure to traumatic events, serious injury or a physical threat. It occurs in 10-45% of people who experience a traumatic event. Those who develop PTSD are haunted by the memories of their experience, plagued with flashbacks, hypervigilance, anxiety and social withdrawal. It can be very disruptive to their lives.
.
Catch up on Bob's journey with PTSD in his commemorative Marine Corps Birthday video.
How can Psychedelic-assisted therapy help? In order to heal, patients must teach their own bodies to feel safe, to cease being in a constant state of high alert. They must be able to talk about their trauma to understand what really happened. The challenge is that reliving trauma can be very distressing and often debilitating. That's where psychedelics can help. Psychedelic-assisted therapy allows patients to get into an optimal zone, a window of tolerance, so that they can go back to the trauma, understand what happened and gain a different perspective and a resolution.
Our Foundation is joining forces with organizations on the cutting edge of psychedelic research. We won't stop until this cure for PTSD is available, accessible and affordable, particularly for our nation's veterans and active duty service members. Join us on this learning journey!
