PROBLEM STATEMENT Many people experience a busy, on the go schedule, or with the recent events of COVID people are now working from home and are having a hard separating their personal lives from their work lives. Both of these ways of living are leading to stress and exhaustion. Neither are good for our mental and physical health as it can cause anxiety and burnout.

Therefore, individuals are longing for a relaxing getaway to disconnect from the world and to connect with themselves.

CONCEPT STATEMENT Seclusion from others in a nature filled environment reduces anxiety and helps rejuvenate our mind, body, and soul. The design of the bungalow retreat will provide a calm, tranquil environment that will allow individuals to relax and connect with themselves. Small, intimate spaces will provide guests with an atmosphere to decompress and reflect with themselves and their loved ones. Light, airy, earth tones will emphasize the natural elements that surrounds the retreat.

RESEARCH Nature’s Effect on the Mind, Body, and Soul Nature has positive effects on physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, and helps in emotional regulation and improves memory functions.

“Nature helps in emotional regulation and improves memory functions. A study on the cognitive benefits of nature found that subjects who took a nature walk did better on a memory test than the subjects who walked down the urban streets (Berman, Jonides, & Kaplan, 2008).”

“Nature walks benefit people suffering from depression. Studies had shown that people suffering from mild to major depressive disorders showed significant mood upliftments when exposed to nature. Not only that, but they also felt more motivated and energized to recover and get back to normalcy (Berman et al., 2012).”

“Recent investigations revealed that being outdoor reduces stress by lowering the stress hormone cortisol (Gidlow, Randall, Gillman, Smith, & Jones, 2016).”

“A study at the University of Kansas found that spending more time outdoors and less time with our electronic devices can increase our problem-solving skills and improve creative abilities (Atchley, Strayer, & Atchley, 2012).”

“Studies have related nature connections to lower BMI. Research has shown that people who practice forest bathing have optimum nervous system functions, well-balanced heart conditions, and reduced bowel disorders.”

Climate: “The weather in the Whitsunday Islands is sub tropical which makes it perfect for beach side holidays.

The Whitsunday Islands lie on the equivalent tropical latitude as Honolulu in the northern hemisphere and Mauritius in the southern hemisphere. The Whitsunday Islands have a year round warm tropical climate with an average temperature of 27.4 degrees Celsius (81 degrees Fahrenheit).”

“The maximum summer temperatures (December, January and February) are around 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) and this is also when the highest rainfall is recorded, in the form of tropical showers which are typically brief. The maximum winter temperatures (June, July and August) are around 24-25 degrees (75°F) and these winter months typically record the lowest rainfall. The high average temperatures makes the Whitsundays weather perfect for beach side holidays and suitable year round for swimming, waters sports and exploring the Great Barrier Reef.”
