The sixth annual Three Village Kids Lemonade Stand event will take place Aug. 8 from 3 to 7 p.m. at R.C. Murphy Junior High School.

This summer lemonade stand founders Maddie and Joseph Mastriano have planned a day filled with visits from Stony Brook University’s women’s soccer, men’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams; performances from Shine Dance Studios and local band SWIM; plus games, giveaways and raffles.

During the school year, all schools in the district participated in a friendly competition to raise the most money. The winners,

“Lemonheads,” will be announced Aug. 8 and awarded a trophy for display in their school’s main office.

In addition to lemonade, snacks will be for sale. Funds raised during the day will go to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Last year the lemonade stand raised more than $20,000 for the hospital, and this year the Mastrianos’ goal is $30,000.

VILLAGE Planning board ready to make decision on South Setauket rentals The Town of Brookhaven is in the final stages of deciding whether to allow a controversial retirement community to be constructed.

Commack-based Heatherwood Luxury Rentals has proposed plans to build on nearly 26 acres of its more than 70-acre golf course on the southeast corner of Arrowhead Lane and Route 347. It was put on the planning board’s decision calendar at its July 9 meeting, and now they have 62 days from July 9 to render a decision.

If approved, the company would construct Heatherwood Golf at Setauket, a 55 and over community with 200 rental housing units, 403 parking stalls and additional garages. Heatherwood also plans to redesign the golf course, reducing it from 18 holes to nine. The property falls in both the Comsewogue and Three Village school districts.

John Gobler, a 48-year homeowner in Heatherwood Village South in South Setauket, attended the July 9 meeting objecting to plans for the new development having only one entryway to exit and enter, which would dump traffic onto Arrowhead Lane. He said the intersection of Arrowhead Lane and Route 347 has been a problem for several years due to the number of cars exiting onto Arrowhead and the timing of lights at the corner, where he has witnessed only four or five cars being able to go through a green light.

He questioned a traffic engineering study

by Stonefield Engineering & Design, LLC conducted June 13 of the traffic volume count of cars exiting Arrowhead to Route 347. The company found a total of 183 cars during 7 to 9 a.m. and 141 vehicles 4 to 7 p.m. Gobler said he sat at the intersection and monitored traffic for a 20-minute period, 8:55 to 9:15 a.m. three separate days when school wasn’t in session and counted exiting cars from Arrowhead. His average was 89 for the 20-minute intervals,

Frank Filiciotto, a traffic consultant with Stonefield, said there are always spikes in traffic, which could account for Gobler’s observation. He said the company has been monitoring traffic in the area for four years.

One observation of cars entering and exiting nearby Fairfield Knolls North by the company showed a daily total of 218 cars observed during 7 to 9 a.m., 2 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.

The monitored development is 0.65 miles northeast of the proposed apartments and is also age restricted. The company prorated the numbers since Fairfield Knolls has 91 more units than what is proposed for Heatherwood. He said the amount of traffic was similar to what they originally projected and should not negatively impact the area.

"This isn't assumption,” Filiciotto said. “This isn't opinions. This is fact. We went out, and we calculated the amount of traffic Fairfield

North was generating during peak hours."

In 2014, Councilman Dan Panico (RManorville) sponsored the resolution for a zone change for the property from A Residence 5, which allows one housing unit for every 5 acres, to Planned Retirement Community, which would allow a 55 and over community. On Dec. 16, 2014, the town board approved by a 4-3 vote. Councilwomen Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station) and Connie Kepert (D-Middle Island) as well as Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) dissented.

The town board placed conditions on its zone change approval, including requiring Heatherwood owner Doug Partrick to donate 40 acres of land to the Manorville Farm Protection Area, removing a billboard at the golf course and constructing a sidewalk on the east side of Arrowhead Lane. Panico’s office confirmed the town accepted the 40 acres of property in 2015 in lieu of the Pine Barrens Credit redemption required under the Planned Retirement Community code.

Development of the golf course has

faced opposition from elected officials and local civic associations since it was first presented in 2014. Cartright remains opposed to the project as it stands, according to her legislative aide Jennifer Martin.

Herb Mones, chair of the Three Village Civic Association’s land use committee, said the civic group opposed the initial zone change for the golf course, and he said many felt it was controversial due to the town board approving it over the objections of Cartright.

“The overpacking of the site with housing, adjacent to a residential neighborhood, and built on an already highly trafficked Route 347 demonstrates poor planning,” he said.

Sal Pitti, president of the Port Jefferson Station/Terryville Civic Association, said the group still stands opposed to the development.

“The community spoke in force back when the project was proposed, and they said we don’t want it,” Pitti said. “The aspect that bothered us the most for the acceptance of the project was that a donation of land went to another council district instead of ours.”

A. We can diagnose Osteoporosis by measurement of your bone mineral density (BMD). The BMD is the amount of mineral in an area of your bone. We do that with a DXA Scan Machine. We compare your BMD to a young 20 year old normal Caucasian female and we get a T-Score. If your T-Score is -2.5 or less in your hip or lumbar spine, you have Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can also be diagnosed clinically, if you are 50 years or older, fall from a standing height and sustain a fracture.

You are entitled to a DXA Scan if you are a women 65 years or older or a man 70 years or older. Younger women and men age 50 to 70 years old who have risk factors for Osteoporosis such as a strong family history (mother or father with a history of Osteoporosis or a hip fracture or if you had a fracture from a fall), a medical condition (ex: Rheumatoid Arthritis, chronic kidney disease, diabetes) or are taking medications that causes loss of BMD (ex: steroids, aromatase inhibitors for breast cancer and some antidepressants) are also entitled to have a DXA scan. It is up to your Gynecologist, Family Practitioner, Internist, or Nurse Practitioner to question you on your risk factors for Osteoporosis and order the test.

If I have Osteoporosis, can it be treated?

A. Once the DXA results demonstrate a T-Score of -2.5 or less and a diagnosis of Osteoporosis is made, your physician should order a lab work up to rule out whether your Osteoporosis is due to your age, family history, a medical condition or to a medication you are taking.

We do that because all of the medications that we use for Osteoporosis have serious side effects. If you have a medical condition, we might treat that before prescribing a medication for Osteoporosis. If it is due to a medication you are taking, we may adjust the dosage or change the medication.

What is the treatment for Osteoporosis?

A. Osteoporosis can be treated but it can’t be cured in all cases.

It starts in childhood and can be prevented with proper diet, exercise and calcium and Vitamin D. It is very important that we all arrive at our peak bone mass in our 20’s (the maximal amount of minerals in our bone) so that when we age and start to lose bone, we will not develop Osteoporosis.

Some of the medications that we use (Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, IV Reclast, Prolia) stop the bone cells that destroy the bone.

Other medications (Forteo, Tymlos) stimulate the bone cells that build bone. All of the medications have side effects but they are rare and only should be used in patients who are at high risk for fracture.

Do I need Calcium and Vitamin D? A. All individuals should have an adequate amount of calcium and Vitamin D in their diet. Calcium is necessary for bone health. If you are 50 years or older it is recommended that you take 1200mg of calcium per day. Our diet gives us 600mg per day. To obtain the other 600mg, the best sources are dairy products. An 8 ounce glass of milk gives us 300mg of calcium, as does a yogurt or 3 ounces of cheese. You need to take two of the same or a combination of two of these daily. You can also get calcium from foods that are fortified with calcium (cereals, soy milk, and juices) or green leafy vegetables. If you don’t get enough calcium from your foods or you are lactose intolerant then you can take a calcium supplement. They are best taken with foods in divided doses.

To absorb calcium you need adequate Vitamin D. Without Vitamin D only 10-15% of calcium is absorbed. Vitamin D can be obtained from supplements and can also be made when your skin is exposed to sunlight. Sunlight converts a substance in the skin to the inactive form of Vitamin D. It then goes into your bloodstream to your liver and then to your kidney. In your kidney the inactive form becomes the active form of Vitamin D.

Seven months into the term of Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. (D-Lake Grove), several issues have become top priorities. He sat for an exclusive interview at the TBR News Media office with the editorial staff July 20 to detail the road ahead.

Staffing issues

The Sheriff’s Office is short staffed specifically due to officers retiring or leaving for higher paying jobs elsewhere, according to Toulon.

“I’m almost signing one to two retirement letters a day,” he said. “We just lost two — one going to [Metropolitan Transportation Authority] police and one going to the New York City Police Academy. I’m expecting to lose two in the near future — more going to other law enforcement [jobs].”

The department is short on 76 mandated posts that the two county corrections facilities are supposed to have. This has led to an increase in overtime for existing corrections personnel. Toulon said he sees the low starting salary for Suffolk County corrections officers as the primary driver of the staff shortage. Those in the positions are paid $30,000 per year initially, reaching about $76,000 after 12 years. Starting salaries in Nassau County or New York City corrections are about $10,000 per year more.

Toulon said 30 people will be graduating

from the county academy Aug. 8 to fill some of the vacancies.

A pay raise would have to be approved by the Suffolk County Legislature, though Toulon said he supports it.

School security

As the occurrences of school shootings seemingly increase nationally, especially after the Feb. 14 shooting in Parkland, Florida, security has become a hot topic among school districts and communities. The Sheriff’s Office is working on the issue as well. Toulon said getting everybody on the same page when it comes to securing schools is a tough but essential job, which requires coordination between school security, police departments and the Sheriff’s Office.

“When you are going into these schools you frequently realize some of these schools have armed security, some have unarmed security, and some have security that are armed because they hired retired law enforcement, and it’s not publicized,” Toulon said.

School security officers obviously do not have standards as far as uniforms across county school districts. Further confusing local law enforcement, each school might have different protocols in engaging an active shooter, whether they will actively engage the shooter with a firearm or focus on getting the children to safety.

Toulon said he and his officers have gone into schools at the request of the districts to

perform security assessments. So far 10 out of 69 school districts in Suffolk County have taken up the Sheriff’s Office on the offer.

Toulon said an ideal setup might be having standardized training for all school districts and school security officers in the county, not only so they would know what to do in a school fire, bomb or shooting scenario, but also because it would train them to interact with any local police that arrive on the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office plans to host a forum for Suffolk County school superintendents Aug. 16 at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue to talk broadly about school security and to share ideas.

Dealing with gangs and ICE

Toulon said that while county jails only hold people charged with local crimes, they do work with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency when it comes to some inmates.

“The Sheriff’s Office doesn’t profile people,” Toulon said. “If you blow a stop sign or a red light, we are going to pull you over. The people

in our custody that have [ICE] detainers are not good people. I wouldn’t want them on our streets — I wouldn’t care what their status is.”

Toulon stressed that the Sheriff’s Office does not participate on any ICE raids. He advised the immigrant community to know their Miranda rights, that they do not have to communicate to police without a lawyer, and that anyone concerned about an arrest could contact the Sheriff’s Office.

Many people in local communities are concerned about activities perpetrated by the local incarnations of the MS-13 gang. Several high-profile gang murders were prosecuted in the past few years, including the 2017 murder of two young girls in Brentwood, complicating community-law enforcement relations and heating up a polarized, politically based national discourse. Stories of abuses of power carried out by the federal agency, mostly in areas nearer to the southern border, have not been representative of the Sheriff’s Office dealings with ICE, Toulon said, adding that he would not tolerate inappropriate behavior from any uniformed officer within the facilities he oversees, be them staff under his purview or otherwise.

Toulon said comments made by President Donald Trump (R) on the matter have made his job tougher, especially when dealing with local immigrant communities.

“The tensions that I see in the immigrant community come from what they see going on in the rest of the country,” Toulon said. “The fact that our current president tweets about it and makes comments about a whole population — that is not fair. It makes my job a lot more difficult.”

Setauket native shines at Stony Brook Film Festival As film lovers packed the Staller Center at Stony Brook University last weekend for the Stony Brook Film Festival, one movie had a bit of local flavor.

“Dean Darling,” which had its world premiere at the festival July 21, was partially filmed in Smithtown and features an actress who grew up in Setauket, Allison Frasca, who plays the character Jaclyn. Alan Inkles, director of the Staller Center, said Calogero Carucci, who wrote and directed the film, created a beautiful piece where one of the strengths was the director’s choice of actors.

“All of the cast were terrific, but without a doubt, Allison’s work was the real glue to keeping the film together,” Inkles said. “As the protagonist, she enters the film and brings a powerful energy that complements the very subtle performance of Douglas Towers, the male lead.”

Frasca said “Dean Darling” centers around a 20-year-old who, after his two parents die in a car accident, searches for answers through relationships and filmmaking. She said Jaclyn is a free spirit who is a breath of fresh air in main character Dean’s life, and when he meets her, he sees the potential to find happiness in the future.

The actress said she was impressed with Carucci’s work, which is influenced by new age French cinema, and she found the film’s

visuals to be beautiful. During auditions and callbacks, she discovered filming would occur in Smithtown, and Frasca said she was thrilled to have the opportunity to film in a town she remembered from her childhood.

Her parents were in attendance for the screening, and her father Anthony said it was the first time he saw his daughter’s work on the big screen, and he and his wife Andrea were proud of her.

“It was really kind of riveting seeing her on the big screen because she’s just so charismatic,” he said.

The father said in addition to his daughter’s acting, he thought all the actors were talented and he enjoyed the storyline.

“I thought that the message of the film — the importance of family and friendship — was uplifting,” he said.

Frasca, who now lives in Manhattan where she performs in stage productions and films, is currently working in the Off-Broadway play “Wicked Frozen.” She said she was honored to be in the film festival that takes place just a few miles from where she grew up and were she visits her parents and two brothers, Andrew and Alex, frequently. It was while growing up in the village and attending The Laurel Hill School in East Setauket that she developed a love for acting and also what goes on behind the scenes.

The actress said she remembered an eighth-grade production of “West Side Story” where there was trouble with the

Frasca said every time auditions were posted for a school play, she would go straight to her computer to research the story and characters. Her love for performing continued through her years at St. Anthony’s High School in Melville, and she majored in theater at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Frasca said she has a lot of fond memo-

ries of driving around the back roads of the Three Village area exploring with her brothers and cousins, and visiting West Meadow Beach to walk down Trustees Road and fish with her father.

She said due to her love of local history, she chose Setauket Presbyterian Church to film a comedy she wrote and produced, “Which Witch is Which.” And one summer, she and her cousin Matthew Colucci visited the Three Village Historical Society to pick up maps to help them stake out every historic sign in the area.

“Every time someone comes to visit I’m like, ‘And here is the site of the Battle of Setauket,’” she said, adding she calls herself a history nerd.

Frasca said her dream role is to play Anna Strong, a member of the Culper Spy Ring who would send signals to a courier by hanging garments in a specific formation on her clothesline in Strong’s Neck.

“It’s a bravery that doesn’t get put to the test anymore, thank goodness,” she said.

Until her dream role comes around, Frasca said she will revel in the joy of being part of the Stony Brook Film Festival as she returns to reality in the city.

“It was amazing being part of the festival,” she said. “I remember walking into the Staller Center to watch Bernadette Peters or ‘The Nutcracker’ when I was young so it was surreal walking into that theater and seeing myself on that enormous screen.”

A 27-year-old man from Selden allegedly drove a 2005 Ford near the intersection of Chereb Lane and Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station July 21 at about 8 p.m. knowing his license had been suspended, according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

On April 5 at about 3:30 p.m., a 33-yearold woman from Port Jefferson Station presented a check from a used car dealer in Centereach at a payroll service facility in Centereach and received cash, allegedly knowing the check was forged, according to police. On the same date about five hours earlier, the woman allegedly also signed checks from the car dealer to three different people while in Port Jefferson Station despite a lack of authorization from the company, police said. She was arrested July 20 in Port Jeff Station and charged with second-degree possession of a forged instrument and three counts of seconddegree forgery.

Cocaine possession

While at Jefferson Shopping Plaza on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station July 17, a 47-year-old homeless man allegedly possessed cocaine, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Driving with suspended license

A 28-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station driving a 2008 Honda on Route 347 near the intersection of Broadway Avenue in Port Jefferson Station July 16 was allegedly driving despite knowing his license was suspended, as it had been previously 22 times, according to police.

He was arrested and charged with firstdegree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Disrupting an investigation

While parked at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson July 16 at about 6 a.m., a 19-year-old man from Mastic Beach and a 22-year-old man from Port Jefferson seated in a 2004 Hyundai driven by the 22-year-old allegedly shouted obscenities and antagonized police conducting an unrelated investigation, according to police. The 19-year-old allegedly repeatedly jumped out of the vehicle and reached in his pockets for unknown objects, police said. Upon trying to drive out of the parking lot, police pulled over the vehicle and found the driver to be allegedly intoxicated, police said. Both were arrested; the driver was charged with driving while intoxicated and disorderly conduct and the passenger was charged with seconddegree obstruction of governmental administration.

On July 7 at about 7 p.m., a 22-year-old woman from Stony Brook driving a 2008 Nissan allegedly crashed into and damaged the fence in front of a home on Erie Street in Holbrook and fled, according to police.

She was arrested in Centereach July 16 and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

A 20-year-old woman from Bellport allegedly stole assorted merchandise from Walmart on Nesconset Highway in East Setauket July 16 at about 9 p.m., according to police. She was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Purse snatched

A purse containing cash, car keys and credit cards was stolen from Ocean 88 restaurant on Main Street in Port Jefferson July 21 at about 4 p.m., according to police.

Constable assaulted

Near Portside Bar & Grill on East Main Street in Port Jefferson July 21 at about 1 a.m., a 23-year-old man from Levittown was approached by a Port Jefferson Village constable and asked to remove his hands from his pockets, according to police. The defendant allegedly “squared off” with the constable, punching him in the face and engaging in a fight, with both individuals falling to the ground, police said. The constable was treated for injuries at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital, police said. The defendant was arrested and charged with assault.

Clothing and sunglasses were stolen from Kohl’s on Nesconset Highway in East Setauket July 21 at about 2:30 p.m., according to police.

Taking from Target

Cleaning hardware and health and beauty products were stolen from Target on Pond Path in South Setauket July 20 at about 10 a.m., according to police.

Pool pilfered

A pump and filter from a pool in the backyard of a home on Dyke Road in Setauket were stolen at about 11 p.m. July 14, according to police. A police report was filed July 19.

TV stolen

A 49-inch television was stolen from BJ’s Wholesale on Nesconset Highway in East Setauket July 18 at about 9 p.m., according to police.

Last but not least, she had a fantastic sense of humor. Her timing was perfection and her choice of words right on. She enjoyed seeing everyone’s reactions and hearing their response.

Her zest for enjoying life was indescribable. She cherished those who loved her and returned their love a hundredfold.

When it came to this year’s annual 3-on3 basketball tournament at the Centereach Pool Complex, Brookhaven Town Councilman Kevin LaValle (R-Selden) decided to do something different. On July 21, the 2018 version of the event was transformed into the Hoops for Military Heroes.

“We always try to do something to highlight veterans and try to bring them together with other community members,” LaValle said.

Farmingville Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 400, Tordik-Diedrich-Duffield VFW Post 4927 and AMVETS Post 48 are all in the councilman’s district, and he said he thought the basketball tournament would be a good way for the veterans and young people in the area to interact.

This year’s event attracted more than 60 students in seventh to 12th grade and approximately a dozen veterans, according to LaValle.

Stephanie Turner, 49, of Rocky Point and formerly of East Setauket, died July 15.

Stephanie was born Sept. 10, 1968, to Phyllis and Dr. Daniel Turner. Her vibrant personality was exceeded by her generous heart and love of life. She embraced all she did with utmost enthusiasm.

Stephanie believed in heaven, and she would often look up to the sky and talk to her beloved father, her brother Lance and all her relatives who had previously passed away.

Her smile and her gift of speech captured everyone’s attention and heart. She didn’t know the word “can’t.” She learned to read and write, roller skate, swim and ride a two-wheel bike. She rode to Finast alone and put all her purchases in the little blue basket, tackled skiing on the mountains of Colorado, traveled the world and had her Bat Mitzvah in Temple Isaiah with Rabbi Fisher. When she read her Hebrew prayers from the bema, tears of joy streamed down all of our faces.

When Stephanie decided it was time for a little independence, she found a second home at Maryhaven in Rocky Point and loved her life there. She embraced the programs and loved her housemates and the staff members. If you were lucky enough to be on Stephanie’s A-list of people, how

The councilman said the event was successful, and he already has ideas for next year, including assigning a veteran as captain to each team.

“I would definitely love to continue this tradition,” LaValle said.

TOWN Cancer cluster discovered in Centereach, Farmingville, Selden Brad Hutton, the deputy commissioner of the New York State Office of Public Health, delivered sobering news to a standing-room-only crowd at the Hilton Garden Inn Stony Brook July 17.

At a public hearing, Hutton told concerned residents that the New York State Cancer Registry had identified three local communities with significantly elevated cancer rates for four common cancers. The affected communities include Centereach, Farmingville and Selden.

The four cancer types that were discovered to be well above the state average include lung, bladder, thyroid and leukemia. The cancer registry statistics disclosed that the rates of these cancers above the state averages were: thyroid, 43 percent; bladder, 50 percent; lung, 56 percent; and leukemia, 64 percent.

Concerned Centereach residents Cindy and Dennis Faicco had questions about how the state would handle such a discovery.

“I want to know how much they are going to reveal,” Dennis Faicco said. “I’m curious if this is just the tip of the iceberg.”

“Two of my son’s friends have cancer,” Cindy Faicco said.

“One has acute lymphoblastic leukemia and one has a sarcoma.” She also said that there were other children in the area who had developed cancers.

— Brad Hutton The cancer registry has had gold-level certification since 1998, according to Hutton.

New York State laws mandate cancer reporting, and this contributes to the accumulation of data; and with statistical analysis, it allows the state to identify areas of concern throughout the state.

Currently there are four areas throughout New York State that are being investigated for cancer clusters. Staten Island is being investigated because it has the highest incidence of cancer rates of the five New York City boroughs. East Buffalo and western Cheektowaga in Erie County are being studied for a high incidence of six forms of cancer, and Warren County has the highest incidence rate for all forms of cancer.

In addition to educating the audience about various causes and types of cancer, Hutton outlined a detailed plan for the upcoming state investigation.

“Simply living in a highlighted area does not mean a person is more likely to get cancer,” Hutton said, referencing a map of the three Long Island communities.

The timetable for the upcoming investigation included identifying study areas, releasing cancer mapping, getting input from community members and finalizing study questions. Hutton outlined a one-year timetable to complete the investigations and recommendations, and results will be shared with the community at another public hearing by the end of 2018.

A number of residents shared personal stories of cancer and expressed concern about numerous potential sources of contamination, especially drinking water. Hutton assured the audience that the Office of Public Health would be responsive to the community’s input and would explore the issue in depth. He said that the community input would be helpful in focusing the state investigation.

Contaminated drinking water, radiation from towers, nitrates, emerging chemicals and pesticides, radium, hightension wires and industrialization of the entire island were all highlighted issues identified by audience members in a question and answer session.

“We can’t be drinking radium,” one resident said. “That’s an emergency as far as I’m concerned.”

Ken from Centereach was concerned about high-tension utility wires and petroleum pipes feeding holding tanks. He said he had been diagnosed with a rare intestinal cancer and that his 32-year-old daughter developed a rare sarcoma.

“Here we sit with a zebra and a unicorn-type cancer,” he

said. “Do you look at those in your studies?”

Joseph from Babylon told of developing a rare bladder cancer and implicated overchlorination of the water supply in addition to overindustrialization.

“As far as I’m concerned this island is done,” he said. “I can’t wait to move off this island. There is something very horribly wrong here. You can stop everything you’re doing right now, and this island will be done for a hundred years.”

The Faiccos were curious why there was little mention of childhood cancers, yet they were hopeful.

“He didn’t have any answers but we’re going to come back and hope he has some in December,” Cindy Faicco said.

Baseball all-star game a family affair for fans and players It’s all about family.

Sure, there was plenty of high-powered baseball last week when I had the privilege of attending my first Major League Baseball AllStar Game at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., July 17, with my son, but, ultimately, it’s clear between and outside the lines that the players fill their energy reserves with the support of their families.

After our first trip to FanFest — a gathering of dedicated baseball aficionados — we wandered over to a nearby burger joint where a man named Frank suggested we go to the Marriott across the street because that was where all the players were staying. We wolfed down the last of our burgers and found a lobby filled with kids of all ages — including adults who enjoy sharing the excitement of the game with their own children — waiting for a glimpse of their favorite stars.

Within a half-hour of our arrival, superstars wandered in the front lobby, where they had about a 50-foot walk between a huge revolving door and a private, securityprotected hallway opposite a sign forbidding pictures or autographs.

Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, whose muscular 6-foot, 5-inch frame made him appear to be the picture of a professional athlete, carried his young daughter in one arm and luggage in another, making it impossible for autograph seekers to ask him to sign their baseballs, programs or notebooks.

Other athletes followed the same pattern, carrying their young children or holding their hands, making it impossible for fans to demand a signature or even to interrupt their family moments.

On the other side of the spotlight, many of the eager fans weren’t too far from their parents, who urged them on and wished them well.

“Who’d you get?” one fan asked her son as he raced back to her, holding a ball carefully by the seams to avoid smudging the valuable ink. “Manny Machado!” he beamed, referring to the former Orioles superstar who the Los Angeles Dodgers would soon trade five players to acquire a day later.

“Good for you,” she clapped and cheered, pleased with her son’s success.

On another trip to FanFest, I watched parents clad entirely in the ubiquitous red uniform of the Washington Nationals. A father with an open jersey flapping at his sides led his two small children, whose jerseys were buttoned up to their clavicles, across the enormous space toward the Major League Baseball store.

At the Home Run Derby July 16, the event that precedes the game in which a few sluggers essentially see how far they can hit baseballs, Washington fan favorite Bryce Harper didn’t disappoint the rabid Nationals fans, beating a determined and electrifying Kyle Schwarber of the Chicago Cubs. After his victory, Harper thanked the fans and his pitcher who, as it turned out, was his father Ron. At the game itself, we were fortunate to sit fairly near the families of the American League all-stars. Patty and Wayne Judge, parents of burgeoning Yankee-great Aaron Judge, watched their 26-year-old son’s every move, filming him during his introduction

Rays’ pitcher Blake Snell’s family filled up almost an entire row of seats, with his name and his number “4” draped across their backs.

When Detroit Tigers pitcher Joe Jiménez entered the game from the bullpen, his family stood proudly, with each of them filming the jog from the left field fence.

Cleveland shortstop Francisco Lindor electrified his family with a hit that almost

made it out of the stadium on a record-setting night for home runs. As he jogged back to the dugout to get his glove, his family stood and applauded his effort, as his broad, patented smile crossed his face.

In the top of the eighth, Lindor’s replacement at shortstop, the Mariners’ Jean Segura crushed a three-run homer, triggering a big celebration from his extended family, who high-fived each other and who received congratulations from the nearby Lindor family.

Segura was an unexpected hero, who was the last player named to join the American League team, beating out Yankee Giancarlo Stanton, among others.

Yes, we witnessed all-stars with the ability to hit balls over 400 feet. Ultimately, though, we had the chance to see families share a weekend that mirrored similar scenes around the world, albeit on a smaller scale. Watching all these families come together to celebrate their baseball achievements made me feel like I was at a high-profile Little League game. Parents, siblings and friends stand on the sidelines, supporting their sons, daughters, brothers and sisters as they revel in the opportunity of the next at-bat.

The result? The American League triumphed over the National League, 8-6, in the 10th inning of an unforgettable all-star game.

Don’t forget efforts to shore up school security It’s the end of July so it’s likely the minds of students, administrators and parents have drifted far away from the hallways of their schools, away from school board meetings and discussions about funding safety improvements. It’s understandable. But following an in-office, exclusive interview with Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. (D) July 20, county residents should sleep well knowing he has allowed himself no such break.

Hardening schools for the worst-case scenario — an intruder entering a local school with the means and intent to impose lethal, widespread harm — has become a top priority for districts across the country since the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead. In the absence of substantive action on tightening gun laws with commonsense reform coming from the increasingly feckless Washington anytime soon, local municipalities and schools have had to get creative.

This week, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) signed a bill permitting the county to pursue bond funding for a mobile application that government employees and school administrators will be able to download and use to directly contact law enforcement in the event of a shooting at a school or government building. In the aftermath of Parkland, Bellone announced an initiative that would allow districts interested in participating to grant access to school security systems to the Suffolk County Police Department, so that in the case of an emergency, law enforcement can see exactly what’s going on in the school. New York State passed its own set of bills in the spring as well, mostly geared toward allocating funds to districts interested in securing infrastructure or hiring additional security or mental health personnel.

These plans are a great start, especially, again, since we would all turn blue in the face holding our breath waiting for Congress. But Toulon raised some issues that seemed to us like they needed to be heard.

When asked if he could wave a magic wand and grant one thing to all 69 of Suffolk’s school districts to make them more secure, he identified establishing uniform practices countywide for training security — armed or otherwise — so that responders have a better feel for what they’re walking into should one of these dark days strike close to home.

Uncertainty about what to expect between police and school district security should be the last thing either should be worried about in the midst of a frantic mission to save lives.

Further, Toulon said he has made his office available to districts interested in having their security practices assessed on a voluntary basis. So far, he said just 10 of the 69 districts have taken him up on the offer. We’d like to see that number reach 100 percent by the end of this year.

In addition, the sheriff’s office plans to host a forum for Suffolk school superintendents Aug. 16 at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue to talk broadly about school security and to share ideas. The offices of the sheriff and county executive have not let this issue fade away during the summer months, and we hope schools haven’t forgotten either.

Lists, contradictions, credibility Myrna Gordon, in a letter “Proud to be on Zeldin enemies list,” and Susan Perretti, in a Your Turn column, in The Village Times Herald July 12 edition double-teamed readers with pearl-clutching, self-aggrandizing accounts of their treatment at Congressman Lee Zeldin’s Elk’s Club campaign event June 28.

Deliberately and disingenuously omitted regarding their evening was critical information, proudly discussed at length and published the very same day, but in another paper, The Smithtown News.

Offering a rather extended interview to The Smithtown News, Ms. Gordon boasted of the plot put together by she, Ms. Perretti and two other cohorts, aimed at purposely disrupting our congressman’s kickoff celebration. The foursome would gain

access to the private property, spread out, not acknowledge one another, then individually and at different intervals interrupt the speakers.

Myrna stated the shouting would begin “when we felt it was most opportune.” In the interview, she continued with specifics. “I was going to be the first one to go, John was going to be the second to go, Susan the third and Bill was going to wrap it up.” The four interlopers spent a great deal of this two-page article, in effect, boasting of their duplicity.

Yet neither lady, writing in this paper, so much as whispered a word about this scheme. Apparently they were too busy sanctimoniously lecturing others about “hate” and “peace” or assigning themselves to a fabricated “enemies list.”

Ms. Gordon did, however, and without a hint of irony, find the space in her letter to demand knowing “What reasons are [Zeldin’s] constituents being targeted?” Even absent in the letter was the recent alleged attack on a Zeldin campaign worker in Smithtown, and accompanying terroristic threats to his supporters. Myrna not only gave excellent reasons, chapter and verse, but immodestly plastered them all over a weekly newspaper, printed just a few miles from where her letter and Sue’s column appeared.

With her own words, Myrna Gordon wound up validating the steps taken by Congressman Zeldin’s security team in keeping out two other plotters and removing both she and Susan Perretti.

Best days of my life, so far Peter Bond’s July 12 response, “Letter could have been bipartisan,” to my June 28 letter was appreciated, and well taken. To clarify some of his talking points regarding my “era of good feelings,” I submit the following: The best days of my life, so far, began on Jan. 20, 1981, and came crashing down the day after Sept.

10, 2001. The Reagan/George H.W. Bush good times were still rolling well into President Bill Clinton’s second term, as the major damage of the Carter administration faded into the rear-view

mirror of history.

Clinton, Nixon and JFK, in my opinion, were as intellectually gifted as they were seriously flawed; all three were hampered by outer proclivities or inner demons (Nixon).

Clinton was on his way to lasting greatness, and my greatest complaint about him is the tepid response to the first World Trade Center attack in 1993, and nearignorance of the bin Laden gang’s planning 9/11 for several years, right under his nose.

That said, in this age of Rep. Maxine Waters, Cynthia Nixon,

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, et al., Clinton and Kennedy were right-ofcenter conservatives, and today’s GOP is about equal to the great Democrats of yore. Conservatives ... I see few of any great influence today. And to the progressives in the audience: Stop with Roe v. Wade already. I know as well as you that it will stand, as it’s a necessary evil and repealing it would be the biggest mistake since the Volstead Act established prohibition.

The humble, singular goal of a speed bump

f I could only talk, I could tell some exciting stories.

For starters, many people think of me as a nuisance. No, I’m not a politician, journalist or lawyer. And, no, I don’t write parking tickets or tell you why you should join my religion and how I’ll promise you bliss in this life or the next one.

I’m much closer to earth.

In fact, you could say that I’m closer to earth than almost everyone.

You see, I’m a speed bump.

bump, designed to force cars racing through school areas, regions filled with small children playing on and around streets, and people approaching dangerous curves to slow down.

Kids don’t start hating me, just as they don’t start hating most things. In fact, small children often enjoy the miniature carnival ride I provide when their parents roll over me during a stroll. Sometimes, parents and children make excited noises as they approach, with their voices rising and falling as they reach the top of my back and then come back down.

As children get older, they like to ride their bicycles, skateboards, hover boards and scooters over me, often at high speeds, as they hope to catch some air. I’m like a skateboarding park with training wheels for children who haven’t graduated to more advanced, and dangerous, versions of high-speed obstacle courses.

Bus drivers sometimes use me to distract a raucous collection of chil-

dren who are eager to get home. In fact, one of my speed bump friends on Main Street in Setauket described how kids at the back of the bus bounced up and down on their seats, hoping to reach my friend at exactly the right time so that the force of the bump caused them to launch into the air.

But then, as they get older, some kids find me as frustrating as their parents do. They want to go faster, because they’re late to meet friends, need to get to a job interview, or can’t be bothered looking at signs on the side of the road that introduce me. They sometimes call me a speed bump, speed hump or even a speed cushion.

They reach me at speeds that are dangerous for a car’s alignment, axle or wheels. The ones that race too quickly over me often shout something unpleasant in my general direction, especially if they hear a crunch or a crack in the car below them.

But, you see, more often than not, that means I’ve accomplished my

goal. If they remember to slow down next time, they will protect their cars and, more importantly, the people who live, walk, work and, best of all, play in the area.

They may not think of the younger versions of themselves, or about their own children, as they slow down, but I don’t care. I’m not there to protect their car or to help them get somewhere more rapidly.

If they choose another route — maybe one that involves a highway — I’ve also gotten them away from local roads. Speed bumps like me serve a purpose, whether or not people enjoy me and the stripes they sometimes put on me.

And, as you know, school will be starting in a few weeks. I know because I’ve seen some of the backto-school signs that pass slowly over me on the way to the stores.

Maybe, some day, self-driving cars will automatically slow down through areas where people are out and about. Until that day comes, I’m here for you and your children.

She wasn’t able to talk yet, but I was two years older and interpreted her coos and cries for the rest of the world. Most often what she wanted was to be loved, and I would run over and wrap my arms around her.

We were a loving family. The world was a happy, secure place; this despite the fact that the time was World War II. We lived

skip alongside. It was at those times that I sensed something was wrong.

People would smile down at me but then stare at my sister.

Then I heard the word and asked my mother about it. It was the first time I ever saw my mother flinch.

I was immediately hushed and told not to use that word again. I didn’t until I was in my teens.

The word my mother, a courageous woman of tremendous fortitude and intelligence, recoiled from was RETARDED. My sister Maxine was, and is, retarded.

My sister was not accepted among “normal” people and never would be. She was a social disgrace.

And all the while, she laughed and played. She was able to talk now and would often say, “I love you.”

Reality forced itself on my mother when she went to register my sister for public school in first grade.

The principal, a blunt, middle‐aged woman, took my mother aside and stated simply, “Maxine cannot go to a normal school. She’s retarded.

Just keep her home. Retarded children don’t live very long, anyway.”

My sister was lucky. She had a family that would always look after her. But what is to happen to those others? Retarded children become retarded adults. And then what?

What happens to them when their parents die and there is no one to pick up the burden? What happens to those who have the advantage of the latest programs and training but now need a place to live?

Only those very few retarded at the lowest end of the intelligence spectrum cannot function, at least to some minimal degree, within a home. The state has attempted to set up hostels for these retarded adults within a home like setting, assigning five or six to each house under the care of a supervisory couple. Communities, by and large, have reacted to these hostels with hostility, fearing for their property values and uncomfortable with the ever‐present social stigma.

I find that few know anything about retardation, and I suspect that this lack of contact is responsible for the hostility the retarded face. Many think retarded people

are deranged or emotionally unstable. Those are fears, not facts. Retarded people are inherently gentle and unaggressive, which makes them defenseless. The retarded are simple human beings with the same basic needs of all of us: food, clothing, shelter — and especially love.

It might seem, from my account, that it took great sacrifice to live with my sister, and in some ways, it did, particularly from my mother.

But in other ways, it taught us so much. Maxine taught us compassion for the disadvantaged. She also served, curiously, to test the mettle of all we met. Those who were reluctant to accept her proved not to be worth our company. Her life showed us, by example, what the most important values should be. Maxine did not understand affect, materialism or hypocrisy. She did not understand social embarrassment. She has the same basic concern for the dog that lives in the next apartment as she does for its owners. It is a respect for all life, and for her, life is music, and laughter and love.
