Since the pandemic shutdown, All Souls Episcopal Church in Stony Brook has been holding live, virtual Sunday morning prayer services on Zoom at 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

According to a press release from the church, these services have been attracting more people than in “normal times,� including folks that cannot climb the stairs of the church and people from other states. With the easing of restrictions on group worship, the church leadership faced a dilemma: How could the church “reopen� July 12 without disenfranchising folks that have come to rely on the live, virtual services and others that are not ready to return to group worship, especially in the small historic chapel?

All Souls decided to continue its 8 a.m. virtual service and locate its 9:30 a.m. service outdoors on the spacious lawn of their rectory at 5 Mill Pond Road.

On the first Sunday of each month, the 8 a.m. service will be at the rectory and the 9:30 a.m. service will be virtual. The virtual service will always be recorded and posted on the All Souls website, www.allsoulsstonybrook.org, so people can select the prayer service at a time that best fits their schedule. Ward Melville Holds Socially Distanced Graduation Ceremonies

Ward Melville High School held 11 separate socially distanced graduation ceremonies July 18 and July 19 to comply with New York State guidelines.

During the last few months, like many districts across the state, school administrators discussed several ideas about what to do for graduation. In a letter to Ward Melville seniors and families earlier in July, administrators announced that the school was developing a plan to host in-person commencements over the course of two days.

In June the school had hoped to hold a ceremony with all the students after Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced the state would allow 150 attendees at graduations, hoping the number

would increase. However, when the maximum capacity was not raised, Ward Melville opted for multiple ceremonies where seniors were allowed to bring two guests each and were spread out on the high school’s front lawn.

Each ceremony began with a recorded version of “Pomp and Circumstance” followed by an in-person performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by graduating senior Jordan Amato. Class of 2020 valedictorian William Sun and salutatorian Matthew Fiorella delivered commencement speeches during each of the 11 ceremonies.

Three Village Organizations Find Ways to Connect with Community Despite Pandemic

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Starting with the annual Memorial Day Parade down Main Street and Route 25A, the Three Village area is normally filled with activities all summer long. While many annual favorites were canceled this year due to the coronavirus, some event organizers are striving to stay connected with residents.

Jay Veronko, post commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars East Setauket Post 3054, said the Memorial Day Parade is usually the group’s biggest event that they host each year. This year’s parade was canceled due to COVID-19.

“I’m not sure of when the last time it was canceled for reasons other than severe weather,” he said.

Veronko said the event means more than simply memorializing former local soldiers who lost their lives in combat overseas or honoring living veterans.

“The parade also serves as a source of local pride in our way of life — the community getting together and coming out and celebrating life and the beginning of summer, as well as getting many diverse groups together to march and let the community know about them and what they stand for or do,” he said. “For the fire departments, it’s a way for the community to cheer them on for doing a great volunteer job and for the departments to display their pride and commitment to serving the community they protect.”

post for social interaction, something he said may not be good for physical and emotional well-being. Veronko said while the future may not be clear, the post doors and the members are there for each other.

“The VFW of Setauket will be there for the veterans who need help or want to gather in the comradeship of arms,” he said.

Gloria Rocchio, president of The Ward Melville Heritage Organization, said

there have been no in-person events at the Educational & Cultural Center since the mandatory shutdowns. While events currently can be held inside with 50 people or less, WMHO, like many organizations, had to furlough a few employees, and they currently would not have enough people to work on events even if they could be held as usual.

The Discovery Wetlands Cruise, which takes participants on a trip through West Meadow Creek, has been suspended for 2020, and the WMHO also decided not to hold its summer music series this year.

While it’s still a couple of months away, the organization has already canceled Walk for Beauty, which is normally held every October to raise money for breast cancer research. Rocchio said many expressed concerns about those who are battling cancer, who may be immunocompromised, attending such an event. As for the future, she said they are waiting for the updates to state guidelines.

Despite the cancellations, the WMHO president said residents have not forgotten the Stony Brook Village Center.

“We get people on the Village Green at night,” she said. “They sit there with their families usually, some might be two people, some are four people. They do social distancing, and they bring food, some even play ball at the lower part. They feel it’s a nice place to watch the sunset.”

She said residents have also noticed people taking advantage of the view more so than in previous years. To continue connecting

with the community, WMHO is also offering virtual classes from the wetlands.

“We’re trying to reinvent ourselves,” Rocchio said.

Lise Hintze, Bates House manager at Frank Melville Memorial Park, said many of their usual events, including their outdoor concerts, had to be canceled this summer, but other activities have been able to take place again. She said the size of the park allows for proper social distance for various classes such as yoga, meditation and tai chi where participants have been wearing masks.

“We can continue with our community and come together, because we have the Bates House and parks grounds that are perfect for what they need with those classes,” Hintze said.

Missing this year will also be the Jewish Summer Festival at West Meadow Beach, which Village Chabad in East Setauket hosts in August. The event also didn’t take place last year due to the grand opening of its new center in June 2020. Despite the lack of inperson events, Rabbi Motti Grossbaum said the center has been trying to maintain a sense of community and connection with virtual classes and events. He said while many have said they appreciate the virtual options, the Chabad staff is looking forward to seeing everyone in person in the future.

“There’s nothing that can replace face-toface and in-person connections,” Grossbaum said. “A community is all about interaction, sharing, schmoozing, kids playing and enjoying friendships in real life.”

Wedding Industry Continues to Wait for Additional State Guidelines

Currently, gatherings such as weddings are limited to 50 people, according to New York State press secretary Caitlin Girouard.

“We are working on additional guidance for these types of events but as we have reiterated many times one of the best ways to prevent the spread is to always wear a mask when social distancing is not possible,” Girouard said in an email.

The shutdowns over the last few months have caused huge financial losses for businesses in the wedding industry. Among them is the Miller Place Inn, which was built in 1850 and has been a wedding site for around 100 years.

Donna Regina, co-owner of the family business, said the last time a wedding was hosted at the venue was back in March, and after months of being closed due to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) executive order that shut down businesses deemed nonessential, the staff is looking forward to a small 50-person wedding that is planned for the beginning of August.

“It’s been financially devastating to take five months’ worth of weddings off the books,” she said, adding that even without being opened they still had a $1,600 electric bill.

She said once wedding venues had to close the owners knew the calendar had to be immediately cleared for March and April.

Soon after they began receiving calls from couples who had large weddings planned for May and June who wanted to postpone due to having relatives coming out of state or older family members who are more susceptible to the coronavirus. She said some events even had to be postponed a couple of times.

While many have postponed their weddings until 2021, Regina said there are still some dates available for next year. Some couples have already held small ceremonies at home and decided to hold off just the reception.

“That’s the couple that’s going to have a better time because they are going to come to have a party, because the commitment, that they already made,” she said. “Whatever they want to do, we’re behind them.”

The Miller Place Inn co-owner said planning to reopen has been difficult with no firm guidelines yet for event venues from the state.

“It’s so frustrating,” she said. “We don’t know where to turn because there is no one or no website that has factual information.”

Regina said the lack of guidelines can be frustrating as they don’t have enough

information to guide couples. However, while many may worry about dancing at weddings, she said the Miller Place Inn has a large dance floor that will allow for social distancing.

She added they are also incorporating more cleaning precautions, have installed UVC lighting and employees will be wearing face coverings and plastic gloves in addition to the cloth ones they already wear.

Photographer’s Perspective

Photographer Ron Denenberg, co-owner of Renaissance Studio Photography in Smithtown along with his wife, Liz, said the last time he remembers a large number of wedding postponements was after 9/11. The studio has been located on Main Street since 1979.

“This is the worst,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Denenberg said he believes it will be a whole different world with weddings in the near future as more couples are planning smaller, less structured parties.

“I don’t see people planning big, big weddings,” he said. “I think people are going to be afraid there will be a second wave.”

The photographer said other milestone events have also been negatively impacted by the shutdowns and COVID-19. One bar mitzvah in March with 300 guests that his photographers were scheduled to cover, with people coming from all over the world, had to be postponed until October. He said many have also taken plans for weddings and other events and modified them to smaller occasions.

Like wedding venues, there hasn’t been much income coming in for photographers the last few months.

However, the photographer is staying optimistic. He said through the years he and his wife have thought outside of the box to keep up with trends and are looking to see what people want during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We want to stay in business,” he said. “We love the business.”

One Couple’s Solution

Among the 2020 brides who are tackling the challenges of wedding planning during a pandemic is Stefanie Fisher, who grew up in East Setauket and now lives in Maryland. She and her fiancé, Bryan Costello, were set to wed this summer at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club in Maryland with about 175 people. While they decided to postpone the big reception until next year, they have planned a smaller ceremony with 26 people at Fisher’s parents’ home in East Setauket. Despite the day working out differently than expected, the bride-to-be said there are still things to look forward to with the couple’s new plan, especially since her parents always wanted her to get married at their house.

“I think it’s really special to be able to

walk down the aisle in a place where I have so many wonderful memories over the years,” Fisher said. “I was excited to have all of our family and friends come down to Maryland for the wedding, but I’m especially excited to be married in an intimate setting at a place that means a lot to me. This DIY miniwedding has given us the chance to kind of put everyone to work to make it a special day.”

Fisher said her sister’s husband will officiate while her nephews will play the wedding march on keyboard and piano. Costello’s brother, who owns the Hicksville restaurant Peppercorns, will cater and her sister’s friend will be taking photos.

“It’s a wedding that everyone gets to feel they have a part in helping put together,” she said. “My parents’ neighbor even offered to chauffeur me from Danfords in his vintage Cadillac Eldorado. This unfortunate situation has had more silver linings than I would have thought and showed me how it really does take a village, and Bryan and I are so lucky to have such amazing people in our lives that are so excited to help make this day perfect. Our story isn’t what we expected but it’s more wonderful than we ever could have imagined.”

Fisher had advice for those who may need to change their ceremony and reception plans.

“Think about how you imagine your wedding, if that’s not possible right now, then wait until it is,” she said. “We all deserve to

have the wedding we’ve dreamed about since we were little girls, but sometimes we just have to wait until the time is right. Look at your partner, is that person still your best friend? Do you still want to spend the rest of your life with them? That’s not going to change whether you have your wedding in 2020 or 2021. You are lucky to have found your person and don’t lose sight of that being the most important part.”

Exploring the History of Emma S. Clark Memorial Library

The Emma S. Clark Memorial Library was founded by Thomas G. Hodgins and opened its doors Oct. 3, 1892. As detailed in the Rules of the Library and Catalogue of Books, “Mr. Hodgkins expended about twelve thousand dollars on the grounds, buildings, fixtures and books ad set apart in securities about sixteen thousand dollars as a permanent fund, the income of which only is to be used in running the library and adding to its collection of books.”

In 1896, just four years after the library opened, it contained about 1,800 books in the categories of fiction, biography, drama, poetry, history, science, voyage and travels, periodicals, reference and miscellaneous.

In addition, the reading room contained the morning and evening papers and about twenty of the popular current periodicals.

Included in the library in 1896 were most of the classics as well as many of the most popular books of that period. There were 18 books by Charles Dickens, 15 by Louisa May Alcott and 31 by James Fenimore Cooper.

There were biographies of 100 of the greatest men and women and enough variety to delight and entertain every member of the community.

Included were Charles Darwin’s two-volume “Origin of the Species” and Joseph Harris’ “Talks on Manure.”

The periodicals included “Scribner’s,” “Century,” “Harper’s,” “Demorest’s Family Magazine” and “Frank Leslie’s Popular Monthly.” There were also 16 weekly papers including “Harper’s Bazaar,” “Country Gentleman,” “Puck,” and “Poultry Keeper.”

the “Brooklyn Times.”

In an address at the opening of the library, John Elderkin, a library trustee who was instrumental in establishing the library through his good friend Thomas Hodgkins, said in part, “In collecting the books which are already placed in this library and which form only a first installment of its contents, the object

which has been kept in view has been to present books which this community will be likely to read. Useful books of reference, the principal historians of England, France and America, the works of the best novelists and poets ...

The bulk of the books, like the bulk of every popular library, is fiction. The novel is the only popular reading, except the newspaper, and the only rival that the newspaper has in the field of literature. If for no other reason, the novel is most welcome and desirable as a diversion from the perpetual record of daily gossip, scandal, crime and politics which form the necessary and probably useful contents of the daily newspaper. The newspaper and periodical press will contribute to make the reading rooms of the library attractive, but the main use and purpose of the library are to cultivate the reading of good books. Even in this day of cheap reading matter, books are an expensive luxury in many houses ... How many would enjoy Sir Walter Scott, Thackeray, Tennyson, Charles Dickens, Washington Irving and many other less famous and significant writers, but the circumstances of whose lives have placed these works beyond their reach … These great novelists are pastmasters in teaching the arts of life, and life, after all, is the great educator; and novels interpret and reconcile us to life. They enlarge our sympathies by making us acquainted with the feelings and

struggles of a multitude of characters who are more real to us who are acquainted with them than most of the men and women that we meet in our daily walks.”

John Elderkin, who was by this time a well-known and noted author and publisher, concluded by saying, “Books were rare in this village when I was a child. There was a small public school library kept at my father’s house (the Elderkin Hotel, now the Setauket Neighborhood House).”

Siderakis Looks to Secure Vacant SD2 Seat in November Elections

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM The 2020 race for the New York State Senate 2nd District seat will pit two political newcomers against each other. Mike Siderakis, a retired state trooper from Nesconset, has been tapped by Suffolk County Democrats to run for the vacant seat previously held by former Minority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport). Republicans have chosen Mario Mattera, a St. James resident, local union official and Suffolk County Water Authority board member.

Republicans aim to keep control of a district they’ve had for the last 16 years, while Democrats see a real opportunity to retake the seat and further expand their majority in the state Senate.

Democratic candidate Mike Siderakis believes he is the right man for the job.

“We need someone that will be able to fight for the people of Senate District 2, I believe I am the right candidate,” he said. “I want to continue to serve the community and protect suburban interest [in the district].”

Siderakis said his time spent in Albany meeting elected officials as vice president and legislative director of the Police Benevolent Association of the New York State Troopers inspired him to run for office.

“I saw the job, and I thought some of these politicians didn’t have the best interests in mind for their constituents,” he said. “I knew I could do a better job than them. I care about

this community.”

Siderakis said one of his main concerns is dealing with the impact of COVID-19 on the state and on local businesses.

“We’re going to have to make some tough decisions on future state and local budgets,” the Democratic candidate said. “We’re going to figure out how we are going to raise revenues.”

Assisting local businesses and attracting jobs to the area is another priority.

“Small businesses play a big part in keeping people in the district,” Siderakis said. “They have faced hardships during this pandemic, some have been forced to close down. We have to support them.”

The Nesconset resident added that he wants to attract industries and other businesses to Long Island to make sure the district is not losing young professionals by providing better-paying jobs as well as affordable housing.

“I’ve lived in the area for the past 25 years, my daughter also lives on the Island — it’s expensive to live here,” Siderakis said. “I want to make this a great place for people to raise their families and for future generations.”

The Democratic candidate said he also wants to address rising property taxes. He hopes with the influx of new businesses and highly skilled workers they would be able to increase the tax base.

Other issues include continuing to support doctors, nurses and other essential workers.

to health care and that frontline workers have the proper equipment and medical coverage to fight coronavirus. Siderakis wants to ensure students and teachers are in a safe environment when schools reopen.

The Democratic challenger said he is someone who can work on both sides of the

aisle to get things done for the 2nd District.

“Partisanship is dividing us, there is a need for compromise,” he said. “If we listen to each other and come to a common ground we can get better results. [The district] needs someone who on day one can advocate for the people of SD2 and I feel I can do that.”

St. Charles Hospital Will Continue Using Masks After Virus Abates

BY DANIEL DUNAIEF DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM At St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson and St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, the use of face masks, regardless of the threat level from the virus that has claimed the lives of just over 2,000 people in Suffolk County and more than 144,000 in the United States, is likely to continue.

“I see [the use of] face masks moving forward,” said Cecilia Hill, director of Infection Prevention and Control at St. Charles.

Indeed, Hill and James O’Connor, president of St. Charles and St. Catherine’s hospitals, said they believe that masks were a critical part of protective equipment for staff.

Almost all of the antibody tests for staff at St. Charles came back negative, which Hill suggested “says a lot for what we were doing” to protect staff, including mask wearing and hand hygiene.

St. Charles recently restarted elective surgeries, which were on hold during the worst months of the pandemic on Long Island.

Anyone coming in for elective surgery needs a COVID-19 screening. The hospital also uses temperature screenings for staff and visitors. Medical personnel and visitors have to attest to the fact that they are feeling well and are showing no signs of the virus.

These procedures will “be in place for quite some time in the far future,” Hill said.

O’Connor said the two local hospitals didn’t meet Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) target for 90 day’s worth of personal protective equipment

for every hospital, which was his original goal in case of another viral surge.

“No one is able to get those kinds of supplies,” O’Connor said. Still, he said the hospitals would be in “far better shape, assuming there’s a surge in the fall,” because they are collecting as much PPE as they can.

The hospitals are also not using as many N95 masks as they were, in part because they are testing so many patients.

O’Connor declined to give the exact amount of PPE the hospitals had on hand.

Following health and safety guidelines during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic also helped lower the spread during the annual flu season.

A viral born respiratory illness like COVID, the flu typically threatens public health between December and the middle of May. Suffolk County typically gets “slammed with the flu until the middle of May,” said Hill.

This year, the last case was in March. While that could also be a product of people suffering through the flu without coming to a hospital during the pandemic, social distancing, face masks and sheltering in place likely reduced the spread of a disease that can also be fatal in some cases, though not nearly as much as COVID-19.

As the number of confirmed positive cases of people with COVID-19 has declined, O’Connor said the fear of going to the hospital for elective surgery is lower.

“Everybody is aware that the numbers are down on Long Island and in New York state,” he said. “My hope is that, because all of the testing, we are going to know earlier on that the

wave is coming back.”

All elective surgeries have had testing done three days before the scheduled procedures.

In cases where tests come back positive, the hospitals are postponing those procedures.

O’Connor said some of these tests have come back positive, even for people who are asymptomatic. The COVID-19 test is required for people who have fallen and fractured their hips.

“A number of positives are not because they

are having symptoms,” O’Connor said. “They aren’t complaining of a fever or other respiratory problems. These are probably mild cases.”

O’Connor said it’s unclear from the literature that a mild case doesn’t spread as much as someone with full-blown COVID with a fever.

Indeed, some medical literature suggests that asymptomatic cases may shed even more of a viral load, he said.

Hill suggested there was a drastic contrast between patients who first came in with symptoms related to the virus and the people they are seeing now.

Part of the reason the prognosis has improved is that hospitals like St. Charles and St. Catherine’s have a much better idea of how to treat patients. Some drugs have helped relieve the symptoms associated with the virus.

As for the staff at the hospitals, O’Connor said he hopes they learned from the public health challenge during the worst of the first wave.

“You hope, and I would pretty much guess, that anybody who lived through it the first time will be very careful about potentially exposing themselves,” he said. “If you talk to people, what they are most concerned about is what’s coming back.”

Ultimately, O’Connor and Hill urged people to abide by the face mask guidelines, particularly when they are close to others.

The decision not to wear a mask could have implications for the longevity of others who are following public health guidelines.

“Do the right thing,” O’Connor said.

“Protect yourself and those around you.”

Laura Jane Gombieski Price

Laura Jane Gombieski Price died in Johnson City Village May 6 at the age of 62.

Laura was a longtime resident of Stony Brook, attending North Country Elementary School, R.C. Murphy Junior High School and then graduating from Ward Melville High School in 1976. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1980.

An avid historian, Laura started her career in museum work as a curatorial assistant in the Carriage Department at the Stony Brook Carriage Museum in the mid-1980s, where she assisted in the restoration of some of the beloved carriages at the museum. Laura loved working at the Carriage Museum and her contributions to the research on the carriage collection lives on in the museum’s archives and in their object records. Laura then performed curatorial work at the Bennington Museum in Bennington, Vermont, where she coauthored the publication “Highlights from the Bennington Museum” and at the Grant Cottage in Saratoga Springs.

Laura loved to travel and settled in upstate New York. She was an expert gardener, a skilled seamstress and quilter, a lover of all kinds of music and would always seize the opportunity to dance and wear a fabulous hat.

A service celebrating Laura’s life was held July 6 at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Morrisville, Vermont, where she was laid to rest. Laura was born in Morrisville, Vermont, and always loved the James Baldwin quote, “Know from whence you came. If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.”

Considering all her travel throughout her years, it was therefore fitting that she return to Morrisville.

Laura is survived by her sister Donna DeMarco and her husband Robert of Sound Beach; her sister Kim Brandeau and her husband Mark of Setauket; her brother Ed and his wife Adria of Bangor, Maine; and her nieces and nephews Julie, Robbie, Kyle, Sarah, Spring and Summer. Laura is also survived by her husband of 30 years, Howard. Laura was predeceased by her mother Jane S. Gombieski of Stony Brook) and her father Edward Gombieski of Texas.

Beverly Sokoloff

Beverly Sokoloff, of East Setauket, died at home Sept. 18, 2019, six months after the death of her husband, Dr. Leon Sokoloff. She was born at home in the Bronx Dec. 28, 1920, to Gertrude and William Beinfeld.

Beverly graduated from Madison High School, Brooklyn, in 1937, and from Brooklyn College in 1941 majoring in music education and French.

In January 1942, Beverly married Ely Trachtenberg and joined him in Buffalo. While Ely trained with the Army Air Corps in California before serving in Europe, Beverly was a secretary at Occidental Petroleum. After the war, they had four children.

Beverly became a single parent in January 1960 when Ely died suddenly. She taught kindergarten for nine years at P.S. 112 in Queens until her 1971 marriage to Leon. In 1973, they moved to Setauket when Leon joined the faculty of SUNY-Stony Brook School of Basic Health Sciences.

Beverly was a dedicated volunteer for Hadassah, Sea-Port Chapter, editing its newsletter and organizing its Book & Author Luncheon for 40 years. She was also a devoted member of the Stony Brook University Hospital Auxiliary and received its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Beverly was predeceased by her sister, Shirley Udelson. Recently, Suffolk County Legislator and Deputy Presiding Officer Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) congratulated Reanna Mattern Fulton for earning recognition as one of the 2020 honorees for the Suffolk Legislature’s Women Veterans Appreciation Day. Deputy Presiding Officer Hahn was proud to recognize Reanna’s service to our country and our community.

“Since the founding of our nation, women have found a way to serve and fight for our freedoms — not without hurdles and roadblocks,” Hahn said. “Now in 2020 women have broken through numerous glass ceilings and serve in various combat roles and in elite units. There is obviously more work to do, but women like Reanna are role models for young girls who dream of serving by defending our great nation.”

Fulton graduated from Ward Melville High School in 1997 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1998. She served on active duty as an information systems technician until 2003.

During her time serving on active duty, she was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, with the Seabees and later, on the USS Abraham Lincoln working on classified networks. In July 2002, she was deployed to the Middle East for Operation

Southern Watch and stayed for Operation Iraqi Freedom. She returned to the United States in May 2003. After finishing college, she became a teacher at West Islip High School and joined the Navy reserves from 2006 to 2009 as a Seabee with NMCB 21.

The first woman member of Veterans of Foreign War Post 3054, today Fulton is the director of instructional and information technology in the West Islip School District and resides in Setauket with her husband Chris, an FDNY lieutenant, and two sons, Blake, 8, and Bryce, 5, both of whom are students at Minnesauke Elementary. She is working on her second year of the doctoral program in leadership and organizational change at Baylor University.

John Ruisi, originally of Westerly, Rhode Island, and a resident of Setauket, died July 12 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

He was born Feb. 7, 1930. After graduating from Columbia University in 1953, John volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army, where he was trained as a medic. He eventually wanted to pass on his love

of history and became an educator. John was a teacher and administrator at Massapequa Public Schools, for over 35 years. After retiring, John volunteered at the Museums in Stony Brook as a docent where he continued to pass on his love of history through storytelling.

Two of John’s favorite pastimes were reading and going to the beach. On any day he could be seen either looking for a book at Emma S. Clark Memorial Library or taking a swim at West Meadow Beach. Rest assured, he always had a good book with him when he hit the sand.

John is survived by his wife Myrna, daughter Dina, son Jeffrey, brother Edward and sister Renata. The family would like to thank the Veterans Day Program in Stony Brook for their care and compassion they showed John and his family over the past few years.

A service was held at Shalom Memorial Chapel in Smithtown.

SBU Medical Residents Come Into Their Own During Pandemic Attorney Advertising

After feeling helpless when some of her family were diagnosed with the virus earlier this year, Ieong knew she wanted to be a volunteer when given the opportunity.

“I definitely think volunteering was a helpful experience because a lot of the difficult conversations that I was having with my patients and their family members are something that you can’t learn in the books,” she said. “You don’t learn it in medical school, it’s something you have to learn through experience.”

Although Wertheim said “everything is a bit slower when you can only put two people in an elevator,” he added that SBU was quick to adapt and optimize their eager students. Online platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams helped meet the demands for educational conferences, especially as residents may be on rotation at other hospitals. It’s clear that these platforms are here to stay, according to him.

“Medicine in general tends to adopt things slowly unless we have to ... and we really had to,” he said.

In thinking about the possibility of a second surge in coronavirus cases, Wertheim noted, “now that we’ve been through this experience once, as hard as it was, it is going to be easier to swiftly redeploy all of those residents as well as all of the other doctors.” Regardless of the future of the coronavirus, there have been benefits for the medical residents, according to the vice dean.

“I think the fact that all of these residents from different specialties had to work together to the same end, even though it was an arduous task, gives them a sense of mission that you don’t always get when everyone’s doing their own thing,” Wertheim said. “And I think that that’s definitely a positive that comes out of all of this.”

Stony Brook University’s newest class of medical residents began their careers head first, graduating early to take on the fight with COVID-19. Renaissance School of Medicine at SBU led a virtual graduation ceremony that took place two months ahead of schedule, in early April.

In line with other medical schools such as Hofstra University in Hempstead and New York University, SBU resolved to graduate their medical students in early spring in order to readily transition them into the workforce.

This decision was “definitely a natural step,” said Dr. William Wertheim, vice dean for Graduate Medical Education at Renaissance School of Medicine at SBU. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) “took away a lot of roadblocks in helping us utilize the staff that were capable of doing this, so that was really helpful.”

Starting in April, 52 residents began volunteering at SBU Hospital and predominantly focused on emergency COVID-19 cases, rather than their specialties.

While resident education typically consists of 80-hour work weeks, the Renaissance School adopted a shift schedule that included five days off following every five days working, given the heightened emotional difficulty residents were facing.

Beginning July, Stony Brook Medicine welcomed over 300 medical residents across SBU, Stony Brook Southampton and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island hospitals. This number included the residents who had been volunteering with COVID-19 patients.

“Residents are interesting in that they both are doctors taking care of patients, and they are learners in an educational program,” Wertheim said. Aside from in-person training in personal protective equipment, the residents learned other essential information such as employee benefits and payroll over virtual modules.

“Top to bottom it’s a different place than we were in one year ago,” the vice dean said.

The continued focus on education was also felt by the new residents. Dr. Kelly Ieong, a urology resident and 2020 graduate of the medical school, said, “Going into my residency, I had the expectation that I’m just going to work, not learn much, and just help out as much as possible. But all of the teams did carve out time for our education and we had virtual meetings over Zoom, even during lunch.

I felt very safe during my entire shift, unlike my friends who worked in other hospitals.”

Graduating Toward For Lewis Get into Good Trouble Some Normalcy

School districts and their students have taken the lead when it comes to a new normal, and perhaps it’s incumbent upon us to follow their lead in our regular lives.

As the coronavirus pandemic progressed, it became apparent to high schools and colleges that the end of the year wasn’t going to be the same for graduates. While institutes of higher learning accepted the fact that an in-person commencement was not going to be possible at the end of May, many school districts held on to the hope that maybe it would happen at the end of June for their students.

But then the pandemic wouldn’t let go.

So high school administrators stepped up to the plate to create alternative events to celebrate the Class of 2020. There were car parades and virtual ceremonies, and when Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said he would allow 150 people at commencements starting June 26, expectations increased.

Many schools had hoped that if they waited until mid or late July, commencement would resemble what it did in the past with all the graduates in attendance with their family members, just socially distanced and with attendees wearing masks.

However, it wasn’t to be. The guideline for the maximum number for graduations hasn’t increased. Schools quickly made the decision to stick with in-person graduation but split the Class of 2020 into several sections and held the events over the course of multiple days, allowing graduates to bring two guests each. Many schools had sets of three seats spaced out across football fields and lawns, and when it came time for the teens to get their diplomas, they would walk the stage 6-feet apart.

Students may not have been able to celebrate the day with all of their friends, families may not have been able to interact as usual — sharing memories or flashing a smile to each other — and the energy may have been more subdued, but at these events there was at least some sense of normalcy.

School administrators, valedictorians, salutatorians and class presidents presented their speeches at each event. There were still the laughs, the tears and the pride. There were hellos and even extremely quick photo ops, before attendees were ushered off the field to disinfect the chairs before the next group arrived.

The graduation ceremonies being held across the state are just a small step toward normalcy — however, they are significant.

Just like the former high school students are taking baby steps toward their futures, the commencements show that we don’t have to live in fear in our homes if we put some thought in our moves like school districts have and proceed with caution.

As our children fearlessly move toward their futures — a new normal — let’s follow their lead. Just like theirs, our future may not look the same. We now need to reimagine social events and interactions with our family and friends, just like districts did across the state, but they have shown it can be done.

Look how considerate and thoughtful our school districts and students have been and compare that to the mass number of people who refuse to socially distance and do the simple favor of wearing masks when out on the town. We can remain disappointed that our lives have continued to be hampered by rules, but the other option is shown in the many other states that are seeing a staggering rise of cases.

We have learned a lot these past few months, and we still have more to comprehend, but we can take steps toward the future and a new normal. One day we’ll look back and realize how much we have learned and grown with safety at the forefront.

The death of Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), an American civil rights hero, leaves us all to mourn the loss of the last of the “Big Six” organizers of the civil rights movement.

Lewis, who was arrested and beaten by police repeatedly in the 1960s in his fight for justice, was known to be the “conscience of the Congress.” He never stopped fighting for justice, and his legacy is ours to carry on as citizens and patriots.

Lewis talked about the hope he felt from the protests that sprung up in the response to the death of George Floyd.

He was too ill to join the protests, but he had this to say in an interview with “CBS This Morning” in June: “It was very moving, very moving to see hundreds of thousands of people

from all over America and around the world take to the streets — to speak up, to speak out, to get into what I call ‘good trouble.’ This feels and looks so different. It is so much more massive and all inclusive. There will be no turning back.”

Americans of good conscience know that the issues that Lewis fought for his whole life are far from resolved. It is our work in our corner of the world to seek justice in all forms, and to do as he asked: To get into “good trouble.” He leaves us with an unfinished mandate, but a blueprint in how to complete it.

Part of our work will be voting out the politicians who seek to stop that progress. One of them is Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-NY1). In the 116th United States Congress, Zeldin has

cast votes that go against Lewis’ life’s work and legacy. Zeldin voted against the Voting Rights Advancement Act in 2019, which intended to restore key protections for voters. Just last month, following the death of George Floyd, Zeldin voted against the Justice in Policing Act that banned chokeholds.

One cannot mourn the death of civil rights hero Lewis and simultaneously support Zeldin, whose voting record is one that empowers bigotry and injustice. I call on all residents of New York’s 1st Congressional District who mourn the loss of Lewis to make “good trouble” at the voting booth and vote out Zeldin Nov. 3.

No Mention of Law-Abiding Peaceful Protesters Professor Arnold Wishnia is clearly entitled to express his dissatisfaction [“A Tale of Two Letters,” July 16 edition] with a letter that I wrote [“Results Should Cause Deep Concerns,” July 9], but I think it would have been helpful if he had found the time in his busy schedule to read my letter first, before attacking it with his bombastic and irrelevant rhetoric. In my letter, I was critical of the response, or lack thereof, of our Democratic politicians to the unrestrained anti-social activities of the anarchists and hooligans who are engaged in vandalism, looting and murder throughout our country.

At no time did I mention law-abiding peaceful protesters, who are entitled to express their collective opinion, as

noted in the First Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees “the right of the people peaceably to assemble,” with which we all agree. At no time did I conflate the lawful activities of the peaceful protesters with the unlawful activities of the anarchists and hooligans.

To help the good professor to understand this distinction, I would ask him to consider the issue of terrorists within the Muslim population of the world. Only a very small percentage of the Muslim population supports terrorism, and an even smaller percentage are themselves terrorists. Therefore, when we condemn and prosecute Muslim terrorists, we exclude the vast majority of the Muslim people, whom we acknowledge to be

good citizens and worthy of our respect and consideration. And so, just as we do not condemn the Muslim population as a whole for the criminal activities of a small fraction of their number, neither do we condemn the law-abiding peaceful protesters for the criminal activities of the bad actors who find a way to appear at the venues of the protests.

We do, however, expect our politicians, including Democrats, to uphold the laws they are required to enforce, instead of pandering to local pressure groups. Surely this is not too much to ask?

I support efforts to replace the existing dilapidated and nonfunctioning cable system on Suffolk County Route 97, Nicolls Road, between the SUNY Stony Brook South Drive and Shirley

Kenny Drive. This project involves approximately 3,300-feet of doublesided, W-beam galvanized guiderail on heavy posts with block outs and energyabsorbing end treatments. This project should be a priority as the old cable system is failing and a new W-beam guiderail will enhance safety on this portion of the road that is used by many in the Three Village area and the students

and employees of the state university.

This section of Nicolls Road is on a curve and an incline increasing the possibility of crossover head-on collisions.

Accordingly, I would encourage the county Legislature to enact I.R. 1358.

As Teams Return to Empty Stadiums, Fans Ponder Their Options

ere we are, July 23 and it’s time to Play Ball!

The Yankees and the defending World Series champion Washington Nationals are returning to the field. The old familiar rules are still in place, with a few COVID-19 related exceptions, including air fists and air elbows.

So, as professional athletes prepared to return this week to some of America’s D. None favorite activities, I of the above conducted a non-sciBY DANIEL DUNAIEF entific poll, reaching out to a range of people to ask a few sports questions.

Before I get to the responses, it occurs to me to make a suggestion to the many teams preparing to fill empty stadiums with cardboard

cutouts. Why not reach out to young, budding artists to get them to send cutouts that the teams could put in the seats? In a baseball game, if a cutout gets hit with a foul ball, the stadium crew could sanitize the ball, put it in a case and ship it to the lucky fan whose cutout was hit.

Anyway, here are the survey results.

For starters, Marie will “probably watch more sports. Not because I want to. But because my husband and children will be clamoring for any available TVs in the house. I hear them say that they would watch chess if it was televised,” she explained in an email.

She suspects watching the game may not be as much fun without fans in the stands.

Although she’s been told she’s a “negative Nelly,” Marie doesn’t think either the seasons or the school year will finish.

Jane, who is more of a sports fan, says she and her family are “so starved for competition and sports on TV and in person” that they’ll likely “binge watch sports” and, when they can attend, will go as much as possible.

They are college sports fans, so they’ve

discussed the possibility of football Saturdays without football. She anticipates numerous shortened seasons.

Paula, a good friend whose passion for the Yankees is as deep as her husband’s dedication to the Red Sox, expects the household to have as much sports as before, which means they will have a game on every night whenever anyone is playing. Their sports enthusiasm connects them with their college-aged son. They have been watching exhibition baseball games. They expect baseball may get through the season, particularly with large enough rosters. She isn’t optimistic about hockey, basketball or football.

A New England fan, Luke will probably watch more of the Patriots and Tampa Bay football teams, because of his interest in Tom Brady and Cam Newton. His daughters are more concerned about their own leagues than the pros. He thinks the NBA might make it 20 games and the NFL about 10.

Robert calls his Phillies’ watching a “family ritual,” and he looks forward to spending time together cheering on the team. Last year, his

family splurged for expensive seats near the infield for the first time and were looking forward to repeating that this summer. They also love watching the Olympics, which will have to wait until next year.

His family hasn’t discussed the return of sports, which may reflect a phase of “acceptance given all the suffering going on in the world.”

Still he anticipates “huddling together on the family room couch” to watch the Phillies. With strong testing programs and without fans or crowds, he anticipates that the shortened season will conclude, even if case numbers rise.

Finally, Jenn, who doesn’t watch any sports, caught a few moments of the Yankees-Mets game at Citi Field, which she continues to refer to as Shea. She observed that there is “something so viscerally communal about sports it seems so sad and empty without the community” of fans.

Some of those fans, however, will be coming together in person and at a distance, to cheer on their teams.

Needless to say, in joyfully fulfilling their father’s wish, they brought us all together with the requisite laughter and hijinks. My grandsons and their friends, like so many of the young people today, are not working at their day jobs or are working remotely. In a way, this strange new existence made such a present possible because, coupled with the internet, they had the time and resources for such a creative gift. They were able to adapt to our altered existence and flip the messages that typically would have been sent in birthday cards presented at the party to Tuesday night’s video-sharing.

It makes me realize how quickly so many of us have harnessed our new lives.

Many meetings and events are now held, in revamped fashion, on the internet. Education,

only recently thought of as unusual if taught over the internet, now looks like it has found a home there. Doctors’ visits, requiring an appointment in a professional office, are now being conducted via telemedicine. Shopping, which has been ever creeping onto the internet, has now in just a couple of months become a way of life there — and not just for a book or a patio umbrella but even for food that is routinely delivered.

Will this exclusively two dimensional existence come to an end? Sure it will, perhaps sooner, perhaps later. The virus has been the driver, and whenever humans have figured out how to overcome the contagion, COVID-19 will just be another disease in the annals of medicine. But as far as the internet goes, you can’t put the cork back into the bottle. We will work more remotely, meet more remotely, be entertained more remotely and otherwise permanently embrace convenient exchanges that can be performed digitally.

One thing is for certain, however. Nothing will ever take the place of a hug.

Other Ways to Say ‘I Love You!’

T

hree men in my life, whom I would normally be hugging a lot this third week in July, are missing. Their birthdays line up nicely for a wonderful celebratory period.

First comes my youngest grandson, then four days later my oldest son, and then two days after that, my youngest son.

This has provided my family an annual occasion to get together with multiple cakes and dinners, noise and fun activities, usually at my home.

But in this Year of Between the Pandemic, it’s not going to hapyou and me pen in yet another

The sad news is that we miss each other’s

physical presence. The good news is that we live in a digital age. It could be worse. Not only could we not hug each other, we could not even see each other over the many miles of separation. But thanks to Zoom and the other video platforms, there we are, at least in two dimension and we can talk back and forth with only a tiny lag between voice and picture.

Tuesday night my family did even more than that. When my oldest son was asked by his two boys a couple of weeks ago what he wanted for his birthday, he asked for something that they would make rather than buy. They met his request grandly. They pooled their particular talents, along with those of their friends, and created a four-minute full color animated video in which they mentioned many details of their father’s life set to original hip-hop music. It was a highly personal Happy Birthday card, sent through the ether and bathed in love.

For example, the video mentioned their father’s love of sailing — and in the same frame, of fruit. They slyly referred to his disposal of an unwanted shot of beer in the
