Water testing finds unacceptable lead levels in 3V schools Drinking fountains are being replaced with filtered water bottle filling stations

By Donna newman After 25 water outlets in buildings throughout Three Village Central School District were found to have lead levels above the EPA guidelines, school board President William Connors Jr. and Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich said the district acted quickly to resolve the problem.

“As the health and safety of our students, staff and community is paramount, the district proactively initiated a thorough testing of all potable school water sources for possible elevated levels of lead,” Pedisich said in a statement on Tuesday. “Upon receipt of the results the district immediately took action and disconnected all faucets found to have lead above and near the EPA recommended levels. In addition, the district is in the process of completing the installation of filtered water bottle filling stations district-wide and will continue to conduct periodic testing of water sources in the future.”

J.C. Broderick & Associates Inc., an environmental consulting and testing agency, performed the testing on sampled water

from sinks and water fountains districtwide. The testing included a two-step process: an initial water draw (immediately when the water flow begins) and a flush test (after allowing the water to flow through the system for the EPA-recommended 30 seconds). The tests were conducted in late May, with preliminary results received in late June, according to an email received from district spokesperson Marissa Gallo.

The majority of the questionable water sources were located in the elementary schools: eight at Arrowhead, one at Minnesauke, three at W.S. Mount, five at Nassakeag, and three at Setauket School. The others were in areas not accessible by students: three at Murphy Junior High, one at North Country Administration Building, and one at the building on Nicolls Road.

The district has now disconnected all water fountains throughout the schools and is installing filtered water bottle filling stations at each of the elementary schools.

Filtered water bottle filling stations are already in use at the high school and both junior highs.

There’s a Pokéstop at the Emma S. Clark Library!

By ReBecca anzel The latest trend sweeping the nation is a throwback from the 1990s with a modern-technology twist: an augmented reality Pokémon game played on smartphones, and residents of the Three Village area are not immune.

Hundreds of kids, teenagers and adults alike took to the streets this week to interact in this new game.

This newest offering from Pokémon evolved the franchise beyond the original cards, television show and video games.

Pokémon GO allows players to create an avatar, called a trainer, and walk around their area, catching any of the 150 original Pokémon. Players can battle one another and get free in-game items from locations chosen by the game.

Pokémon GO is getting people of all ages out of their houses and into their neighborhoods. The only way to catch Pokémon is to walk around searching for them, and similarly, the only way to get a refill of free in-game items is to go to Pokéstops.

One of those stops is the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library. Director Ted Gutmann said once he discovered this, he had to try it. “I caught a few in my office,” he said.

“So they’re here!”

The library is busy this time of year because of its summer reading program, but Gutmann said being a Pokéstop is attracting more people than usual. “The hope is, once

they get in here, they’ll stop and read a book or attend one of our programs,” he said.

Gutman added that the library had tried its hand at augmented reality a while ago, implementing the technology in its newsletter. It abandoned the effort because it was not getting enough use at the time, but now that Pokémon GO is increasing the popularity of AR, he said the library may revisit the project. “There are lots of opportunities to use the technology beyond the game,” he said.

Just two days after the game’s release, players were spending an average of 43 minutes and 23 seconds per day playing Pokémon GO, a higher rate than popular apps including Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp. According to SimilarWeb, an information technology company that tracks web analytics, Pokémon GO has so many daily active users that it is projected to soon have more users than the well-established social media platform Twitter.

But some people are concerned about the safety risks associated with Pokémon GO. Pedestrians are now wandering around towns, with their eyes turned down at their smartphones. Law enforcement agencies, institutions of higher education and public transportation systems have tweeted about the dangers of walking around consumed by a smartphone.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini echoed Bellone’s sentiments at the event. “There have also been accounts of people using the application while driving,” Sini said. “We are encouraging not just parents, but all users, to practice caution to avoid injury to self and others.”

Stony Brook University tweeted to remind students to watch where they are walking while playing Pokémon GO.

Mark Szkolnicki, a student at the university, said he is always careful when playing. “I grew up in a bad area, so the whole mugging-for-phones thing has been something that I’ve been cautious of forever,” he said. “But I worry for the youth because it’s a cool concept and it could really grow.

Those kind of obstacles really put a downer on the whole gaming community.”

Stony Brook Office for Marine Sciences secretary Christina Fink agreed. It’s important to keep in mind if players are going hunting for Pokémon at night, they should go with at least one other person.

The fight against opioid abuse took a step further this week as U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) plugged new legislation. The freshman congressman is a co-sponsor of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, which plans to spend $8.3 billion in funding to help combat widespread drug addiction, especially to heroin.

CARA passed through the House of Representatives last week with a bipartisan vote of 407 to 5.

Zeldin, who is a member of the Bipartisan Task Force to Combat the Heroin Epidemic, said he has been a proud supporter of this bill for more than a year now.

“As a co-sponsor of CARA, I have been a vocal supporter of this bill since it was first introduced at the beginning of last year,” he said in a statement. “Over the past year … I have worked closely with our local community, hosting multiple drug task force round tables here on Long Island, to bring together local elected officials, law enforcement, health professionals, community groups, parents, concerned residents and those in recovery, to discuss and develop a more localized solution to address this crisis.”

Zeldin has held heroin events in Smithtown and Brookhaven to meet with community members and keep the discussion open.

The specifics of CARA include $80 million in funding to help prevent and treat addiction on a local level through community-based education, prevention, treatment and recovery programs; $160 million for the expansion of medication-assisted treatment options; and $103 million to establish a community-based competitive grant program to address and treat the problems of heroin and opioid addiction and abuse. Additional funding will also help supply police forces and emergency medical responders with higher quantities of naloxone, known more commonly as Narcan, a medication that is proven to reverse an opioid overdose.

Another part of CARA’s funding focuses on pain management and prescription.

According to the bill, the Department of Health and Human Services is required to assemble a Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force, which will review, modify and update the best practices for pain management and prescribing pain medication, and examine and identify the need for, development and availability of medical alternatives to opioids.

The grant aspect of CARA is connected to the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968. CARA is set to amend that bill to authorize the Department of Justice to award grants to state, local and tribal governments to provide opioid abuse services, including enhancing collaboration between criminal justice and substance abuse agencies; developing, implementing and expanding programs to prevent, treat or respond to opioid abuse; training first responders to administer opioid overdose reversal drugs; and investigating unlawful opioid distribution activities.

CARA currently has 44 co-sponsors and is set to go to a vote in the United States Senate.

The North Shore is not immune to the heroin crisis. According to a New York State Opioid Poisoning, Overdose and Prevention Report from 2015, Suffolk County has the highest heroin-related overdose fatalities of any county in New York.

Zeldin said he hopes the Senate will act fast to approve the bill.

“I implore the Senate to act quickly to pass this bill, so that we can start providing the necessary resources to those in need,” he said. “While there is not just one piece of legislation that will solve this crisis, we must always continue our fight to provide our local communities with the resources necessary to help stop and prevent drug abuse through treatment, enforcement and education.”

On July 17 at about 4 p.m. a man entered Walmart at the Centereach Mall and put clothing in a duffle bag and exited without paying, according to police.

On July 17 at about 1 p.m., a 25-yearold man from Miller Place possessed cocaine on Sweetgum Lane in Miller Place, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

A 27-year-old man from Massapequa took a 1995 Nissan from a home on Birch Street in Central Islip on July 14 without permission from the vehicles owner, according to police. At about 10:30 a.m. on July 16 he was ques-

tioned by police and officers said he gave a fake name. He was arrested and charged with false personation and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

At Schafer’s bar in Port Jefferson at about 11:30 p.m. on July 15, a dispute inside the bar between two people led to one being punched in the face, police said. The victim went to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for injuries.

At about 1:30 p.m. on July 17, two men took a power washer and a trimmer from Lowe’s on Nesconset Highway in Stony Brook, police said. At the same time and place, two people stole a leaf blower and a chainsaw. Police could not say if the suspects were the same in both incidents.

Smoke up

Cigarettes were stolen from behind the counter at BP gas station on Nesconset Highway in Setauket at about 4:30 a.m. on July 16, according to police.

Stop in the name of the law

On July 13 at about 12:30 p.m., a 30-year-old woman from Lake Grove driving a 2003 Honda failed to stop at a stop sign on Jayne Boulevard in Port Jefferson Station, police said. After she was pulled over, police discovered she was driving with a suspended license.

She was arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Whip scratched

A 2013 Hyundai was scratched while parked on Sylvan Avenue in Miller Place at about 8 a.m. on July 14, police said.

Pool stuff takes a dip

A pool filter, pump, chlorinator and other items were stolen from a home on Ridgeview Place in Mount Sinai at about 8 a.m. on July 5, according to police.

No restrooms means no lifeguards at Sand Street beach

By ReBecca anzel The absence of functioning public bathroom facilities has caused a problem at a popular Stony Brook beach.

Because the health department does not permit swimming where there are no restrooms, there will be no lifeguards on duty this season, town spokesman Jack Krieger said.

A recently added sign warns beachgoers to swim at their own risk, due to the lack of lifeguards.

Stony Brook Beach is crowded in the summer with families, children and dogs, village resident Nicole Mullen said. She goes to this beach on Sand Street four to five times a week.

Now that the bathrooms are closed, though, she said some beachgoers are less than thrilled.

Mullen said she is lucky to live nearby, but for the typical folks that frequent the beach, the nearest public bathroom is in Fratelli’s Italian Eatery — about a 10-minute walk away.

The Town of Brookhaven did not open the bathrooms at Stony

Brook Beach, which is commonly referred to as Sand Street beach by residents, because findings in an engineer’s report commissioned by the town found structural and plumbing issues with the 50-yearold building, said town spokesman Kevin Molloy. The beach will remain open all summer, albeit

without lifeguards.

“I have been working with the Parks Department to address the issues with the bathroom facilities at Stony Brook Beach as it is of great importance for our community to have access to our beautiful Town beaches,” Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson

Station) said in an email. “I have, and will continue to, explore the options for reinstating lifeguards with [Brookhaven parks commissioner] Morris.”

The Town placed two portapotties outside the existing, closed bathroom structure, Cartright added. Though Mullen said

the town does not clean them.

It is unclear when the beach’s restrooms will be renovated. Molloy said the estimated cost of the work is a minimum of $400,000.

Parks Commissioner Ed Morris is just beginning the budget process for 2017.

“It feels like the town put so much money into West Meadow Beach, upgrading it, and they cut back here,” Mullen said. She added that the restrooms look the same now as they did when she worked at Stony Brook Beach in the 1980s.

In this year’s survey, 680 participants representing an estimated 2,146 hospitals nationwide participated.

The survey examines how organizations are leveraging IT to improve performance for valuebased health care in the areas of infrastructure, business and administrative management; quality and safety; and clinical integration.

According to this year’s survey, Most Wired hospitals are using “telehealth” to fill gaps in care, provide services 24/7, and

expand access to medical specialists.

These hospitals are redefining the way they provide care in their communities, using technology to build patient engagement with the individual’s lifestyle in mind, which includes electronic access to their care team.

“These Most Wired hospitals exemplify this transformation by harnessing technology, engaging patients and offering services remotely,” said Rick Pollack, president and CEO of American Hospital Association. “And, removing policy and other barriers to telehealth will allow even faster adoption of these amazing technologies.”

B’haven Animal Shelter waives adoption fees July 23 and 30 The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center will hold two special events on consecutive Saturdays, July 23 and July 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The second annual nationwide Clear the Shelters adoption event will be held July 23.

Nearly 20,000 pets found their forever homes in 2015, when some 400 animal shelters across the country partnered with NBC-owned television stations and the Telemundo station group. This is the second year the center has participated.

On July 30, the Town of Brookhaven will sponsor the Summer Lovin’ event.

At both events, the normal adoption fees of $137 for a dog and $125 for a cat will be waived, and neuter or spay, vaccinations, microchip, license, heartworm test, flea and fecal are also included at no cost.

Both events will include vendors with information and giveaways. Food and refreshments will be available.

WMHS golf team tops Suffolk & LI Ward Melville High School boys’ varsity golf team scored a hole in one this season as they were named Suffolk County and Long Island Team Champions for the second consecutive year.

In addition to this group accomplishment, Gerald Mackedon was named the Boys’ Golf Individual Suffolk County Champion and was the runner-up at the state championship by one stroke.

Brandon Cea goes to Boys Nation Brandon Cea, a rising senior at Ward Melville High School, has been selected as a senator for American Legion Boys Nation taking place in the Washington, D.C. area from July 22 to July 30.

Boys Nation is an annual American Legion program that includes civic training, leadership development and a focus on Americanism. Cea was previously elected as the mayor of his city, county executive of his county and governor of the New York Boys State, which had roughly 1,000 participants.

At Ward Melville, Cea has served as the president of student government, the 11th-grade class president, the president and vice president of the Ward Melville

Chapter of Patriot League of America and is a member of the Invictus chapter of the National Honor Society. He is a part of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Program and has served as the leading petty officer and as the current chief of the boat for the New York LPD-21 Division. He is active in his community, participating in the Three Village Historical Society, youth corps and his church youth group. Cea is active in the Boy Scouts and is an Eagle Scout and troop guide. He is also a part of his local fire department serving as the captain of the Junior Explorers. He resides in East Setauket and hopes to attend West Point to study civil engineering.

Cub Scouts clean up Bear Lane Park

The Bear Cubs of Cub Scout Pack 377 participated in a community clean-up project at the Bear Lane neighborhood park in South Setauket. In fulfillment of their Cub Scout Bear requirement, the boys picked up litter throughout the entire park and ball field. Then they planted beautiful flowers in the two flower boxes, extending

themselves above and beyond.

“These young boys enjoyed learning about taking care of our environment, then putting to use what they learned — without expecting anything in return,” said Shari Fontana, co-leader of the pack with Jason Spatz. “As a parent, I think this shows these young boys’ true character.”

Interment followed at St. James Episcopal Cemetery.

Carriage shed at Caroline Church, a historical treasure

By Beverly C. Tyler Photographers have been taking pictures of the Caroline Church Carriage Shed in all seasons for many years. Since it was completed in the spring of 1887 at a cost of $273, this simple open building has aged gracefully, becoming more beautiful as the roof took on a natural wave shape that added to its special appeal. In addition, its utilitarian construction of white oak beams, white pine boards, cedar shingles and black locust posts allows us to see the construction methods that date back beyond when the shed was constructed, to the beginnings of our community when our homes, barns and out-buildings were built using these same local materials.

The shed’s seven bays for horses and carriages were funded by Mary Smith, Thomas Hodgkins, Margaret Dickenson and Sarah Dominick, General Francis Spinola, Shepard Jones, Mrs. Frank Norton and William Edwards, local residents who wanted shelter for their horses and carriages. A painted family name board was attached to the rear wall of each stall or bay.

In November of 1892, Thomas Hodgkins, who built the Emma Clark Library for the community in memory of his niece, wrote a note to library trustee Israel Tyler, “It has just occurred to me that my horse shed at the Episcopal Church may be of some use to yourself and family, and as I shall never again have any use for it, I hereby offer it to you as a free gift. Very Truly Yours, Thomas G. Hodgkins.”

Hodgkins died in December 1892 and is buried along the entrance walk in the Caroline Church graveyard. Israel Tyler’s name is still there on shed bay number three.

Barbara Russell, a member of the Caroline Church Historical Committee wrote, “What appears to some as a building that outgrew its original use about 100 years ago is ... a rather unique parking place, the vehicles just changed. I always preferred it on rainy Sundays, as I could exit my car and open my umbrella without getting wet. In summer months, my car stayed cool in the shade. Those Victorians knew what they were doing when they planned and built a simple structure to make life a little more pleasant. The sliding windows on the west wall just gave the horses a little air and a view ... Horses like to see what is going on around them.

“What does it look like to residents who travel Main Street or Dyke Road, and pass it everyday? What does it look like to a newcomer, maybe shopping for a home in Setauket? What does it look like to a child who sees it for the first time? To know the answers, you will have to ask your friends, your new neighbors, and the seven-year-old who lives down the street. But most important: What does it look like to you?

“Is it a humble structure that reminds you of a simpler life? Life may have been simple, but it wasn’t easy. We can rush through the morning, jump into the car and drive to church in a temperaturecontrolled car. In 1887, in addition to getting ourselves ready, we would have fed, groomed and harnessed the horse to our carriage. Then we made our way to church, rain or shine, hot or cold.”

In 1991, the church and cemetery, including the carriage shed, were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In April, 2016, 450 fourth-grade students from the Three Village Central School District toured Setauket’s original settlement area including the carriage shed.

They learned about the shed and about the horses and carriages that were a part of life here for more than 300 years. They also discovered that before the carriage shed was built, a colonial one-room schoolhouse stood on the site. From 1700, until a new school was built in the center of the Setauket Village Green in 1869, all of the children from Setauket, East Setauket and Drowned Meadow (now Port Jefferson) attended school here, including all the local children who later became members of the Revolutionary War Culper Spy Ring.

Tours of Caroline Church and the churchyard, as well as tours by the Three Village Historical Society include the historic Caroline Church Carriage Shed and speak to the many centuries when horses and carriages

were essential to our lives.

Today the carriage shed needs extensive restoration. Caroline Church has hired an architect for plans to restore the shed to its original condition and has applied for grant funding to help offset the cost of restoration. “We believe the 1887 carriage shed, as the 1729 Caroline Church building, are historic parts of the Three Village community,” reported Don Muffly, senior warden at Caroline Church. “We need the community’s financial support as the cost of restoration is beyond the resources of the church alone.” If you can help, please send your tax deductible contribution to Save the Carriage Shed, C/O Caroline Church, 1 Dyke Road, Setauket, NY 11733. Artists at Reboli Festival focus on Gamecock Cottage

By Donna newman The 12th annual Joseph Reboli Wet Paint Festival paid homage to the Gamecock Cottage at the southernmost tip of Trustees Road at West Meadow Beach. Artists chose to paint at the cottage or across Stony Brook Harbor at Sand Street beach, and despite the soaring temperatures, “plein air” fans turned out in droves to watch artists create.

Gallery North director Judith Levy said six years ago, when she took the job, she “was fascinated by the Gamecock Cottage itself. All these artists would bring something that had to do with [it] – the photographers, the painters. And I thought, what’s up with this?

“Then, a while ago,” she continued, “one of the artists wanted to create a [Gamecock Cottage] souvenir T-shirt. So she and I and councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jeff Station) took a walk out to see it. … They were just starting a campaign to renovate it, so people could actually walk inside, because it was unsafe.”

Levy suggested they use the site for the annual Wet Paint Festival and said Cartright loved the idea.

Due to the extreme heat, most artists chose to paint at Sand Street beach.

“I thought everybody did really well,” Levy said. “We had about 35 artists, which is good, considering it was 192 degrees out there.”

The gallery is really growing now, and we have the Art Center, where we have a lot of painting classes and workshops. I think it’s a good opportunity for people to try things out and maybe paint next year.

By DeSiRée KeegAN Once Sarah Bucher picked up a lacrosse stick, she never wanted to put it down.

Now, the soon-to-be Ward Melville lacrosse player, who will be heading into her freshman year of high school, will be playing in the Brine National Lacrosse Classic.

“It’s a confidence-booster and I feel proud,” Sarah said of making the 22-member team. “It’s a really big honor to be selected.”

During a one-day tryout for the classic, in which the Brine National Lacrosse Academy brings top players and coaches to Richmond, Virginia, to compete and gain exposure to the next level of lacrosse, Sarah was asked to visit various stations and perform

different exercises to show her skillset.

“Each station I went to was a little nerve-racking,” she said. “They’re telling you to do certain skills that you might not be comfortable with, but it’s all part of learning and trying new stuff. It’s definitely beneficial to my game.”

Sarah currently plays for Legacy Lacrosse, a travel club team. Head coach Genevieve Stickney said she wasn’t surprised that her attack was chosen for the team.

“She has all of the abilities that they’re probably looking for — she’s a big hustler on and off the field so I think having that mentality that she comes onto the field with is something that a team like that really needs,” Stickney said.

— Sarah Bucher Stickney said she has seen a huge improvement over the past year that she has been working with the athlete.

“She’s a smart player, she’s energetic, a big motivator and she goes out there and she gets it done,” she said. “I consider her a motivator on the field. She’s also very good on defense. She’s an attacking kind of player, but we know we could put her in on defense and she could perform really well. If she stays on the same path I could see her doing really well in college.”

And that’s what she’s hoping to get out of being on this year’s Long Island team.

“The goal is that she’ll be seen by coaches where she’ll be able to start conversations on playing for them and their school, and even if we get looked at or noticed by a few of them, that’ll be a big accomplishment at this point for a freshman,” Sarah’s mother Claire said. “We hope she plays hard, she gets noticed and continues the path.”

Sarah is hoping to get more out of the tournament than just being noticed. She’s looking forward to the strong competition — to leave a more localized level, although already playing other states on her travel team — and seeing where she fares against the best of the best.

“I’m definitely excited to show my skills and talent, but I hope that the players on

my team will benefit my game, and help me learn more skills and tricks to use on my high school and travel teams,” she said.

According to Sarah, the sport has also taught her life skills she will take with her as she moves into high school, and she hopes to one day take what she’s learned to the varsity team.

“Each time I go to practice or a game I learn something new and I just want to experience fun and beneficial games,” she said. “The whole thing about being a part of a team is to be cooperative and be a team player, and that’s definitely helping me off of the field.”

Her mother is also looking forward to watching her daughter play, both on the Brine field, in Richmond, Virginia, from July 19 to July 22, and one day, the Patriots’ field.

“I’m always a little bit nervous if she’s going to do her best, but I feel so much excitement and pride in her in the choices that she makes, how hard she works and how dedicated she is,” she said of watching her daughter play. “She’s a unique kid.

She’s given up many plans with friends, parties, many of the things that teenagers want to do, in order to continue to play sports. At the end of the day, she chooses lacrosse over all of it. As a mom, she makes me continuously proud, almost to tears.”

By donna newman To celebrate the history of the West Meadow Beach peninsula and its well-known cottage, Historians Barbara Russell and Bev Tyler led a walking tour along Trustees Road on Saturday, July 16. Park Ranger Molly Hastings shared information about indigenous plants and animals. A small group started out, but it grew as more and more people gathered to listen and learn.

First stop on the tour was the Old Field farm, which has been a horse show arena since 1930.

That was the year Ward Melville offered it as a substitute venue to replace one that was no longer available in Smithtown.

Brookhaven Town Historian Barbara Russell said that the farm became famous on the North Shore horse show circuit.

From the horse show grounds, Historian Bev Tyler pointed out the Fischetti excavation site on the far side of the creek. Named for the builder whose bulldozer uncovered Indian artifacts, it became the site of an archaeological dig in the 1980s that lasted two years. Tyler said the dig produced evidence of a manufacturing area used by Native Americans 13,000 years ago to create stone implements and tools. The manufacturing site sits 800 yards from the village that was discovered

Russell provided an overview of West Meadow’s history. Despite the fact that access to the water and the peninsula was repeatedly reinforced in deeds, she said, it eventually fell into private hands.

In 1908, the Town of Brookhaven purchased the whole strip for use as a public beach. It was divided into 110 lots, and eventually cottages were erected on the lots, which were leased as summer bungalows. In the middle was a group of lots that formed a beach

association for use by Brookhaven Town residents. The cottages — except for five — were removed in 2005, after 75 years of negotiations, Russell said.

Another stop on the tour was the Dr. Erwin J. Ernst Marine Conservation Center. The structure that eventually housed the center, said Russell, was one of the “temporary” buildings at Setauket School, added to accommodate high school students as the school population grew.

It was moved to the beach to house the program which had been taught out in the open by

Ernst. Behind the center is the outlet of an aquifer that has been there for eons. The spring water is cool, even on a hot summer day.

Aunt Amy’s creek is the name of a natural curve in the lagoon’s water flow. Its shore was the site of a 1955 archaeological dig, financed by Ward Melville and conducted by Ritchie.

The dig unearthed the tools, weapons and kitchen implements of a village. All materials collected in that process may be found in the New York State Museum in Albany. When the Fischetti dig was undertaken, Melville’s wife

came from Brooklyn. The cottage has recently been raised up, and is being restored and structurally reinforced. Visitors were allowed to enter and view artifacts produced by the Fischetti dig, as well as historical photos and maps of the area.

Preserve Plum Island One of the things that instills great pride in North Shore residents is the unparalleled natural beauty of the place we call home. We are grateful to those who came before us for their discernment and diligence in protecting and preserving that — which, once developed, is lost forever.

Conservationists and environmentalists have worked to ensure that open spaces, clean water, nature preserves and pine barrens will continue to exist for future generations to enjoy.

A controversy is roiling Long Islanders and activists nationwide, over the proposed sale of Plum Island by the federal government. In 1954, the island was the secured location of an animal research facility run by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. More recently, responsibility for the island has shifted to the Department of Homeland Security.

Today, Plum Island, an important, pristine, ecological habitat, is in danger of being sold to a developer. The island has seen little human traffic in the last 70 years, which has enabled about 80 percent of the land to revert to its natural state. It is now home to some of our most imperiled species.

As the Plum Island Animal Disease Center has become outmoded, plans are afoot to create a new center in Manhattan, Kansas. To defray the cost of the new facility, the government wants to sell the 843-acre coastal island to the highest bidder.

We applaud the efforts of Congressman Lee Zeldin (RShirley) to block the proposed sale. The House of Representatives has passed two of his legislative proposals to date. Zeldin urges the Senate to act and pass the proposals as well, and we agree with his sentiments. We are hopeful that we can pursue a better direction for Plum Island than just private ownership, one that would allow for continued research, public access and permanent preservation.

to the editor: An enemy, whose mission is to seek out and slaughter unarmed innocents by any means necessary, has declared war on us. Denying this obvious truth is a form of self-deception, that by blurring the single-minded resolve needed to defeat a barbaric foe, will lead to increasingly deadly results.

While many understand and prepare to fight a metastasizing, savage, global terrorism, others retreat to some idealistic, imaginary safe space, where “seeking resolutions,” demonstrating and demanding new laws, will magically reduce this existential threat.

Hoping that holding signs claiming “War is not the answer” or expecting gun-control legislation to be respected by murderous, pledged jihadists is beyond fantasy. It ranks right next to the discredited notion that “gun free zones” will stop committed weaponized murderers.

Witness the recent carnage in basically “gun free nations”: Bangladesh, at least 28 killed in a diplomatic zone, no less; Turkey 42 slaughtered, 239 hospitalized; Belgium, 32 murdered, more than 300 injured; France, 234 killed,

some 600 wounded. Most of that butchery resulted from detonated bombs or, recently, a huge truck. Minus armed rescuers, the casualties would have been much worse.

In America, along with guns, we’ve seen pressure cookers, knives, machetes and hatchets, used in Islamicextremist inspired attacks. But the weapons that proved to be, by far, responsible for the most catastrophic losses of both lives and property were box cutters. An item easily purchased at any hardware store was used by hijackers to take control of three large passenger jets, loaded with fuel.

When those on the third plane realized their craft was destined to become a deadly missile, they were left ramming the cockpit door with a beverage cart. It was the only offensive option those courageous Americans had available to them.

Considering the real world options these jihadists give us, think about whether a utopian or reality-based approach might offer both targeted civilians, and our nation as a whole, the best chance to survive. For example, should we pursue the kind of fanciful and recently decreed unconsti-

tutional call for our congressmen to support legislation to ban “firearms with a capacity of more than five bullets?”

Apparently caught up with all their surveys and polls, a peace group couldn’t be bothered to learn that a federal judge and appeals court right here in New York have already ruled that setting even a limit of seven bullets violated the Second Amendment.

Or should we see the obvious facts as they exist, declare we’re in a war and fight it as such.

More and more historians are beginning to equate today’s Islamic extremists to Nazis of the 1930s and ’40s.

Given that comparison, it’s critical to remember that platitudes on placards didn’t stop Hitler, and certainly won’t deter ISIS jihadists.

Referring to Germany, FDR prophetically stated in 1940, “No man can tame a tiger into a kitten by stroking it. There can be no appeasement with ruthlessness. There can be no reasoning with an incendiary bomb.” That approach worked awfully well during our last World War. Jim Soviero Setauket

Pomposity and circumstance to the editor: Graduation is the culmination of a baker’s dozen years in school.

It’s cause for celebration: a prom. A lovely way to commemorate personal and collective achievement and say thanks and goodbye as young people move on with their lives.

But for most students, graduation is not a majestic or amazing accomplishment. No disease was cured. No world problem was solved. No work of art was created.

Rather, it represents having met the now-minimum and expected requirement to function in society. Nice going.

But, as someone observed some years back, proms are

reaching honeymoon proportions. The very building where the final four years took place is disguised, converted Cristolike, into a fantasy.

Grandstands, not unlike the Oscar awards’ viewing stands are assembled. The red carpet is rolled out for the graduates who wait in a long queue of grand entrance vehicles. The line can last three hours or longer. One by one the transports enter the grand tier.

There are air balloons, Sherman tanks, toboggans, catapults, drones, dirigibles (I exaggerate, but only slightly) and, of course, assorted European sports cars which help to publicly exhibit the family wealth. It’s a deluxe festival of outdoing the other kids …

you know, the modest, the less well-off, the “losers.”

The graduates strut, sashay, swagger or simply walk their way up the carpet as they’re haloed in spotlights.

A few illustrate that they know how to kiss, V-J Day style. It’s all very “Dancing with the Kardashians” at the Jersey Shore.

The parents and enablers cheer the spectacular display, as the graduates enter fantasyland for their final lesson … ostentation.

The very parents who battled against the excesses of Common Core have little inclination toward common sense.

he news is in my blood. If you don’t believe me, check the name of the person who writes the column on the same page and who started this business 40 years ago — go Mom! And yet there’s far too much blood in the news these days. It’s not enough that storms and natural disasters kill: People are murdering each other in stomach-churning numbers.

we want to know what’s going on in the world, what we need to do to stay safe and what other people are doing and thinking.

It seems to me that there are things we can do. We can give blood. Why? We might save someone’s life, we might give someone a vital supply of something we can’t grow in a field, pull from a river or manufacture in a laboratory.

Recently, I met a woman who had been donating blood to her father for two years. He was sick and he needed blood on a regular basis.

After he died, she continued to give blood. She said her father received blood from other people besides her during his illness, and she wanted to give back to a system that improved and extended his life.

Do we read about her? No, generally, we don’t, because it’s a small act of kindness and social awareness that doesn’t get politicians angry and doesn’t cause people to write messages to each other over the Internet. It’s not an opportunity to resort to name calling: It’s just a

chance to save lives.

We can also volunteer to make our communities better places.

We can be a big brother or big sister, or we can find a charitable organization that provides caring and support for families that have children with special needs. My Aunt Maxine had Down syndrome and gave so much more than she ever took.

Sure, she dominated the airwaves with her husky voice and, yes, she sometimes said and did things that made us roll our eyes, but, more often than not, she displayed the kind of unreserved love and affection that jaded and vulnerable adults find difficult to display. When Maxine laughed or did something extraordinarily funny, like sharing a malapropism, she laughed so hard that she cried. Nowadays, after she died, we find ourselves sharing tears of joy when we think of how much she contributed to our lives and to the room.

When the big things seem to be going in the wrong direction, we

the people can commit random acts of kindness. Yes, we can and should pray for each other. It certainly can’t hurt, regardless of whether we’re Christian, Jewish, Muslim or any other religion.

We can also take the kind of actions that define who we are and that show our character. We are living in a world after the Brexit vote and after the failed coup attempt in Turkey. We may not know what to make of all that, but we can decide who we want to be.

We can’t stand on a platform, the way all the former Miss America contestants of bygone days used to, and wish for “world peace,” because that seems naive. And, yet, we can hope that small acts, committed in the name of counterbalancing all the negative news, echoed and amplified across the nation, can turn the tone.

We are fortunate enough to live in a place where we can shape the world in a way we’d like it to be, one community and one random act of kindness at a time.

Great fun and games amid Culper Spy Day history

his might sound peculiar since I am in the news business, but for over the past weekend I disconnected myself from all news reports. I was unplugged, you might say. Now this is a confession from an ultra news junkie. I’m normally so addicted that if I wake up in the middle of the night, I’ll switch on the bedside radio to catch up on what has happened since I went to sleep. But the past week, with the excruciating

So I just turned off, or rather I didn’t turn anything on — not my radio, not the television, not the news apps on my cellphone. I didn’t even talk about the news with friends and neighbors.

I have a further antidote for all that has been happening in the world, and it’s even great fun to pursue. This Saturday is Culper Spy Day in Setauket, and it is the work of a number of local organizations committed to bringing history to life. The Culper spies, as you may know, were a small band of close friends who provided George Washington and the colonists with critically important information throughout the Revolutionary War at great risk to their lives. So engaging were their exploits, and so valuable to the eventual outcome of the war, that AMC has a cable TV drama, “Turn,” which has been drawing large audiences for three seasons to date. The series is what we call historical fiction, with the emphasis on fiction loosely — very loosely — based on real events. Those events belong to us because they are part of our local history and are a source of community pride.

This Saturday, July 23, you will be able to walk or bike or drive a designated route that offers views of key locations in the Culper story. There will

The actors in these episodes may be recognizable to you, and they do a fine job of conveying the gist of the story.

We have used the services of a professional film crew, who shot the local scenes over the past several months.

Community leaders introduce each film segment to set the scene. And in between episodes, if you are walking the route with your family, there are fun arcade-like games to play on your smartphone or laptop. The games, like

the scenes, are our original creations and lots of fun. I predict your children — and you — will return to them many times to improve your score. I have.

Special thanks go to the participating organizations and their members for the vision to mount such an ambitious event and the enormous amount of time and effort that went into making history come alive. These include the Three Village Historical Society, The Ward Melville Heritage Organization and The Long Island Museum.
