The next couple of months are packed with celebrations, including high school and college proms and graduations. When planning any outdoor festivities, PSEG Long Island urges customers to think carefully about how they handle Mylar balloons.

Though they can make a party more festive, Mylar balloons can also cause power outages when they get loose and come in contact with electrical equipment.

The distinctive metallic coating on Mylar balloons conducts electricity. Because of this, when a Mylar balloon comes in contact with a power line, it can cause a short circuit. This short circuit can lead to power outages, fires and possible injuries.

To reduce the risk of outages and injuries, residents should keep the following safety tips in mind: • Mylar balloons and other decorations should be kept away from overhead power lines and all utility equipment.

• Make sure balloons are secured to a weight that is heavy enough to prevent them from floating away. Keep balloons tethered and attached to the weights at all times.

Preparing for an emergency is at the top of minds in the education world these days. Parents in the Port Jefferson, Comsewogue and Three Village school districts can sleep well, as their kids’ bus company had a unique opportunity to put its preparedness to the test.

Suffolk Transportation Service was among a small group of bus companies in the United States selected by the federal Transportation Security Administration to participate in a training program meant to assess and improve coordination between school bus operators and other agencies in emergency situations. The three local districts are among 16 in Suffolk County that use STS, and about 80 percent of those participated in the training exercise, according to Ray Grimaldi, the company’s vice president of operations.

The day-long training exercise was conducted by representatives from TSA, an agency of the federal Department of Homeland Security, at STS’s training facility in Bay Shore last month. The sixhour exercise featured simulations of actual emergencies, like one in which a bus driver found an explosive device on a school bus and had to decide on courses

of action as the intensity of the simulation steadily increased. Grimaldi called the exercise powerful and comprehensive.

“It was actually awesome — it’s so realistic it’s crazy,” Grimaldi said. “It allowed us an opportunity to see how good we are, where we need to improve.”

Grimaldi said the company is still waiting on an official assessment from TSA on its preparedness, but agents conducting the exercise told him it was the best training session the agency has conducted to date. He said part of the reason STS was selected was because about eight years ago, the company volunteered to undergo a voluntary baseline Homeland Security audit, which Grimaldi said yielded the highest score attainable.

“Our top priority as a school bus operator is student safety,” STS president, John Corrado, said in a statement. “STS is pleased to be selected to spearhead this training program in Suffolk County, which helped all participants enhance their coordination with other agencies to keep students safe.”

Fred Koelbel, Port Jefferson School District’s facilities administrator, was in attendance for a portion of the exercise.

“It was very interesting, and I think an illuminating exercise,” he said. “It really gave everybody some food for thought. Suffolk Transportation Service is on the cutting edge of so many things. We always say that the students day starts when he or she gets on the bus, and they embrace that.”

Local emergency responders, including Suffolk County Police Department, along with New York School Bus Contractors Association, administrators, security and transportation personnel from the bus company’s districts, were on hand to observe and participate in the day’s events.

Grimaldi said STS expects to see the results of the exercise shortly.

BY HERB HERMAN An “insidious killer” can creep up on boaters and homeowners alike without warning, lurking in generator exhausts, on boats, wherever there are products of combustion. Carbon monoxide (CO) is the killer.

We’ve been warned a thousand times, but people continue to get sick and die from this odorless gas. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 400 Americans die from CO poisoning every year from engine and non-engine consumer products. More than 20,000 people visit the emergency room, and some 4,000 are hospitalized. Carbon monoxide gas is odorless, which often goes undetected, striking victims caught off guard or in their sleep.

When the gas builds up in enclosed spaces, individuals who breathe it can be poisoned.

This is particularly true on a boat.

Everyone should learn what they can do to protect their family from the dangers of CO: Install and maintain CO alarms inside homes and on boats to provide early warnings of CO; Install CO alarms in a central location outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of homes; Use portable generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from all doors, windows and vents.

Low to moderate CO poisoning is characterized by headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and dizziness. High-level

CO poisoning results in mental confusion, loss of muscular coordination, loss of consciousness and eventually death. Symptom severity varies depending on the level of CO and duration of exposure.

There are numerous documented cases where swimmers near the exhaust of boats have succumbed to CO poisoning. A particular tragic case occurred when 7-year-old Sophia Baechler, who was seated at the rear of her parents boat while in operation, died of CO poisoning after only a relatively short time. Minnesota is the first state to formally recognize the dangers of CO poisoning by requiring CO detectors and warning stickers on motorboats. The new CO law, Sophia’s Law, is named after her.

Be aware that CO can remain in or around boats at dangerous levels even if the engine or other nearby boat engines are no longer running. Be alert to the fatal consequences that have befallen others. This is one more thing to think about while boating.

It is recommended to test smoke and CO alarms at least monthly. And it’s not a bad idea to vacuum them occasionally to prevent dust from interfering with their sensors. See the user manual to find out how often to replace batteries and the devices themselves, based on the life expectancy of their sensors.

Gershon emerges from field of five in 1st District Dem Primary

Perry Gershon, a largely self-funded firsttime candidate for political office, who spent years as a commercial mortgage lender and a small business owner, defeated four other Democrats aiming to take down incumbent 1st District U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) June 26.

More than 20,300 1st District voters turned out to vote in the primary, which was open to only those registered as members of the party, as per New York State law.

Gershon secured 7,226 votes, beating former Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning, his closest competitor, by about 1,000 votes.

Vivian Viloria-Fisher, another former legislator, finished third with 3,314 votes. In 2016, about 12,600 registered Democrats went to the polls on primary day to choose between Anna Throne-Holst and Dave Calone.

“The voters showed that we’re tired of what’s going on in Washington,” Gershon said to a room full of supporters and volunteers at his campaign headquarters in Setauket when it became clear his lead would hold up. He thanked his family and those who worked to help him win the nomination, as well as the other four candidates, who he said ran a clean race with an eye on unifying postprimary all along.

“Our elected leaders are not responsive to what people are looking for. People want a new breed, and that’s what I stand for.”

Zeldin, who has been quiet about his potential challengers, wasted no time getting the campaign started on Twitter once Gershon became the presumed victor.

“Park Ave Perry may have bought himself the Democratic Party nomination in NY-1, but our Congressional seat is not for sale,” the incumbent wrote. “NY-1 isn’t electing a far left, Pelosi-loving, NYC Democrat who registered in our district very recently just to run for Congress.”

In an interview after his win, Gershon said he intends to make his campaign about health care, the environment and creating high-wage jobs in the 1st District.

“I’m really excited, I feel like people believed in me and I’m so happy for it,” he said.

Many of those believers were people who readily admitted they’d never gotten much involved in politics in the past.

“I’ve seen a lot of people, like at my school, very few people who cared about politics beforehand but after the March for Our Lives, after the result of the Never Again movement, and even after what’s happening at the border right now, far more young people are getting involved,” said Scott Egnor, a Ward Melville High School student who helped organize the youth-led local gun control protests in March.

He cited Gershon’s desire to ban assault-style weapons and strengthen background checks as the driving force behind his motivation to volunteer for his campaign. “Even at the office, he still wears his March for Our Lives hat, and I think that spoke to me a lot.”

Browning said in an interview from her watch party in Patchogue she’s not sure what her next move might be in politics, but vowed to support Gershon’s efforts to flip the seat in November.

“It’s about taking out Lee Zeldin, and we all need to regroup and support [Gershon],” she said.

All five candidates told TBR News Media in May they intended to support the primary winner.

High school names chess enthusiast valedictorian

of career options will await him when he finishes school. He said he would love to start a company that addresses or brings innovation from neuroscience to the public sector.

He said if his plan to own a startup doesn’t work out, he can work in finance or for companies like Google and Facebook in their computer science departments.

He said a recent program conducted by Google caught his attention.

It involved central processing units playing chess against each other and teaching themselves in isolated loops.

He said research like this relates to what he wants to do in the future: applying machine learning and pattern recognition study to neuroscience and neurogenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

In addition to his studies, — Ethan Li which included several advanced placement classes, Li started the chess club at Ward Melville, and he volunteers to teach the game to students in the district. This summer he will travel to Paris, France, for a week for the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine annual meeting. The research project he did two years ago titled “Differences in Subcortical Brain Volumes Between Expert and Novice Chess Players” was selected for the conference.

Ward Melville’s valedictorian felt like he had been checkmated, but then he heard some good news.

Ethan Li was at a chess tournament in Ohio, and he said he was feeling down after losing an important game when his friends started texting him. He discovered his 105.77 weighted average earned him the valedictorian honor for 2018.

Li moved to Stony Brook from Arizona at the beginning of ninth grade, and it was a big transition from a small private school to a large school district, but he said he’s happy his family made the move.

“I definitely felt there were more opportunities for internships, research, just in general, meeting different kinds of people who had different talents in different fields [here],” he said. “And, I felt like that was a really helpful experience to be able to reach out to them and learn somewhat from them.”

Li said he’s been inspired by his classmates through the years. A couple are former students Hugh Ferguson and Josh Farahzad, who started the nonprofit Mission: Toothbrush, which distributes oral hygiene products to those in need on Long Island. This year Li became co-president of the nonprofit.

Li will attend Princeton University this fall where he will major in operations research and financial engineering — ORFE for short. He said he became interested in ORFE while talking to friends who were first- and second-year students at the university on the same track.

When it comes to juggling his education and activities, Li said he thinks of the old Nike ad, “Just Do It.” “When you start doing one thing, it’s a domino effect upon activity,” he said. “You just want to do more and more.”

Ward Melville salutatorian ready for the future

After graduating from Ward Melville High School with a 105.2 weighted average and earning the salutatorian title, Michael Lu isn’t missing a beat when it comes to pursuing his career goals.

For part of this summer he will be in a lab at Stony Brook University researching electrical activity in the heart, which he started last year, and he said he is hoping to publish the results in the near future. The East Setauket resident is set to attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall where he will pursue a degree in biochemistry on the pre-chemistry track.

“I aspire to be a respected physicianscientist in the future, preferably focused on cardiology, so that I may combine my interest in cardiovascular research with my interest in the humanitarian aspect of medicine,” Lu said.

The salutatorian said he first developed an interest in becoming a physician talking to his father Zhongju Lu at the dinner table every night. He said his father was a doctor in China, but when he moved to the United States, he was unable to practice medicine due to different education requirements, so he dedicated himself to research. A few years ago, his father decided to become a doctor. He started his residency in his mid30s, which is later than most doctors, and his father overcoming hurdles to become a physician has inspired Lu. Lu said his interest in medicine grew while volunteering at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital where he had a chance to interact with patients and visitors at the front desk, work in different departments and watch nurses and doctors treat patients.

“Being a practicing physician interests me on two fronts,” he said. “One is that I really do want to be involved with research, and I also like the aspect of helping people.”

For a future physician-scientist, it’s only appropriate he found out the news he was salutatorian in Advanced Placement Chemistry class.

“I was so grateful when everyone in class took the time to congratulate me on the good news,” he said. “After a good five minutes,

Lu, who took several advanced placement classes at the high school, started his studies in the Three Village Central School District in second grade. Before then he attended kindergarten and first grade at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in Port Jefferson.

During his senior year, Lu was vice president of the chess team and debate club and captain of the mock trial team. He said his participation in the extracurriculars

through the years has cultivated his public speaking skills, and his time at Ward Melville has taught him the value of time management and planning. Those skills, he said, are essential in an environment where students have many opportunities to explore their interests.

“Besides providing me with a wealth of resources — excellent teachers, a variety of clubs/extracurricular activities and a strong academic support network — Ward Melville has an ingrained culture of hard work and perseverance, all of which have helped to propel me to academic success,” he said.

Ward Melville High School’s class of 2018 had a storybook ending to their days in the Three Village Central School District June 21.

This year the prom theme was Once Upon a Time. As the students entered the school, they found the building was decorated like fairy tales including Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

Students arrived at the prom in classic and luxury model cars.

Three Village Kids Lemonade Stand founder Maddie Mastriano pulled up in a horse and carriage with trumpeters playing.

Parents and friends waited on bleachers since the morning to see the students stroll down the red carpet before the big event, which was live streamed and posted to YouTube.

during the past three years in junior high school, the students were celebrated not only for their academic achievements but for the successes they reached beyond the traditional classroom. throughout both ceremonies, highlighting the vocal talents of the soon to be 10thgraders before members of the administration called the “graduates” to the dais to receive their moving up certificates and, at Gelinas, a yellow rose in honor of a former member of the grade.

Paul Vincent Groben, 90, of Stony Brook, died peacefully in his home June 20.

He was born Nov. 24, 1927, along with his twin brother Peter, to Adele Blum and William Groben of Franklin Square. Paul attended school in Centereach with his siblings and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945.

He served his country as a military police officer at Fort Lewis, Washington, also receiving his GED. Paul started his business Groben’s

Autobody in Centereach in 1948 with his twin Peter. He married Anne McGaw in 1952 in Selden at St. Margaret of Scotland Church. In later years he had four children: Paul, Michael, Anne and Jane.

He lived a full life of adventure such as motorcycle riding, circumnavigating Long Island via boat and flying Piper Cubs. He retired after selling his business in 1993.

He is survived by his sister Marjorie Zsembery, four children and five grandchildren.

He certainly touched many lives with his wit, charm, intelligence and fairness. Paul was one of the last of the greatest generation to walk the earth.

A funeral was held at St. James R.C. Church in Setauket June 25.

A “New York, New York”-themed prom under a huge white tent brought together nearly 40 former and current patients, as well as family members, doctors, staff and volunteers at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for its annual prom night June 9.

Throughout the evening, the partygoers enjoyed dancing, music, activities, photo booth and food. The night is designed to be therapeutic and to help raise spirits amid the illness. The teens don’t have to worry about having tests, procedures and treatments.

Prior to the event, professional hairstylists, makeup artists and nail technicians provided a complimentary, full salon treatment of pampering to the attendees before the big night.

SPORTS Former Yankee, St. James resident plays in Old-Timers’ Day game “Mickey Mantle, he was my idol. It was very hard to play baseball at 19 when you’re sitting next to your idol.”

These are the words of former Major League Baseball player Frank Tepedino, now 70, on his earliest experiences playing for the New York Yankees. He was able to enjoy a blast-from-the-past type of weekend at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx Sunday, June 17, with friends and family on hand to cheer him on. The St. James resident grew up playing baseball in the streets and parks of Brooklyn with many family members who were also talented ballplayers.

As early as 16 years old, Tepedino received attention from professional scouts who took notice of his exceptional skills.

During the mid-1960s, the young hitter was becoming increasingly feared for his consistency to hit well against opposing pitchers. As a teenager, Tepedino played for the Brooklyn Cadets, an amateur baseball squad that defeated other competitive teams in the city and on Long Island. Fifteen of the 20 players on the team were drafted by major league clubs. As a 17-year-old who developed a dynamic swing, he was drafted 33rd overall in the country by the Baltimore Orioles. Some of the earliest scouting information compiled on Tepedino was gathered by former Yankee manager Joe Torre’s father, Joe Sr., who reported on his considerable abilities.

Once he was signed by Baltimore, Tepedino earned a $50,000 bonus he immediately gave to his parents to move them into a new home.

The descendent of a traditional Italian family, he got his earliest professional experience in a small West Virginia town. He moved rapidly through the Orioles farm system in an age when scouting reports on opposing pitchers weren’t as abundant as today.

“You had to trust your own skills and continue to learn about the game from your coaches and older players,” Tepedino said. As it has been his custom to speak to thousands of students during his retirement, Tepedino always mentions that he had the “God-given ability to hit the ball consistently.”

Former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Fred Cambria said he believed Tepedino had “one of the best swings that you could ever see and he was a gentleman from the moment that we met some decades ago in baseball.”

As many other ballplayers experienced in that era, Tepedino had to take a stint away from the game to serve his country. During the height of the Vietnam War in the late 1960s, the Orioles’ management instructed their better players to try to enlist into the Army Reserve or the National Guard. This allowed prospects to still serve in the armed forces and to play baseball at the same time. Tepedino enlisted in the Marine Corps and while he was at Parris Island, South Carolina, his mother wrote him and sent a press clipping that he was exposed in the rule 5 draft by the Orioles and that he was traded and elevated to the majors to play for the New York Yankees.

At 19 years old, Tepedino sat next to the very players he idolized, listening to on the radio and watching at the stadium as a kid.

During a spring training game, he sprained his ankle sliding into a base and was told to have it checked out in the locker room. While Tepedino was resting, the legendary Yankee Clipper, Joe DiMaggio, inquired about his injury. He later had hitting conversations with Red Sox great Ted Williams, was given conditioning training by Olympian Jesse Owens, and met former president and general, Dwight Eisenhower.

Tepedino, who was just old enough to drive a car at the time, earned his first hit against Jim “Mudcat” Grant and homered against Catfish Hunter of the Athletics. He also had a front seat in history, watching Mantle famously hobble around the bases when he hit his 500th career home run in 1967. But the path to gain regular playing time was a difficult one with formidable teammates of Joe Pepitone, John Ellis, Ron Blomberg and the aging Mantle to compete against. According to Tepedino’s wife Lori, the annual Old-Timers’ Day game and surrounding events the Yankees have hosted for decades allowed her husband to speak with former Yankee Elston Howard’s wife,

Arlene. As a young man, Howard who was the first African-American to play on the Yankees, a league most valuable player and later a longtime coach in the organization kept a supportive eye on Tepedino to help the youthful hitter adjust to the difficulties of the major leagues. On the field and in the clubhouse, Tepedino was always known for his easy demeanor and this was seen through his close friendships with Yankee greats like Thurmon Munson, Bobby Murcer, Willie Randolph and Bobby Cox. Later in his career, he was on the same team with Atlanta Braves star Hank Aaron, and once again witnessed a historic achievement from the field when Hammerin’ Hank slugged his 715th career home run in 1974, surpassing Babe Ruth.

Tepedino retired from baseball in 1978, opening a new chapter in his life that eventually led him to be hired by the New York City Fire Patrol. To make ends meet, he was a longtime employee of Port Jeff Sports, where he screen-printed many of the jerseys worn by the local kids who played every type of sport. While working behind the counter he was known for giving a helping hand to fathers and sons in picking which bat and glove would best suit them. Armed with a big smile, Tepedino was always known to help others, especially when it came to baseball.

When America was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001, Tepedino, along with thousands of other rescue workers, rushed into the city to help those that were suffering from the earliest moments of the attack. The former Yankee worked 24-hour tours during which he opened manhole covers, searched for trapped people and aided in the painful process of cleaning up lower Manhattan.

“Tepedino on a regular basis represents the goodness of professional athletes to help with vital social, educational and veterans’ endeavors,” said Joe Cognitore, commander of VFW Post 6249 in Rocky Point. As a New

York Yankee and a rescue worker, Tepedino was asked by his former team to throw out the first pitch during the divisional playoffs against the Oakland Athletics in 2001. Some 17 years later, he was back on the field to wear the pinstripes once again to play in the Old-Timers’ Day game. It has always been observed by Tepedino’s youngest daughter, Danielle, that her dad is “always wanting to make all of the people around him smile.” His big smile could be seen across the baseball diamond as Tepedino played first base, and he wished every Yankee that ran in his direction a Happy Father’s Day. From the moments that he dominated the sandlot fields in Brooklyn to this past weekend, Tepedino has always held his head high and has been a special citizen who has aided others inside and outside of the baseball lines.

After an intensive tryout period, Ward Melville High School seniors Shannon Berry and Alex Mazzone have been named to the 2018 Under Armour All-America girls and boys lacrosse teams.

The pair will represent Ward Melville June 30 at Johns Hopkins University, where 44 of the nation’s best senior boys and girls will compete in the 13th annual Under Armour All-America North-South Game. The games will be televised live on ESPNU. Mazzone, an integral member of the Patriots’ defensive unit that helped the team secure its second straight Class A state title with a 15-2 win over West Genesee June 9, signed a letter of intent to play lacrosse for Georgetown University in the spring of next year.

Why I disapprove of Trump voters ANDREA PALDY

We need to keep 2018 graduates on LI Hundreds of Long Island students have accepted their high school diplomas this week. We’ve sent them off into the world armed with the best advice and pearls of wisdom we have to offer. In doing so, we can’t help but hope this isn’t goodbye.

The Class of 2018 students are each pursuing his or her own version of the American Dream. What defines that dream can vary greatly — whether it’s studying medicine at Stony Brook University, learning a trade or joining the military. The question we have to ask is this: When these students are envisioning their futures, how many picture himself or herself staying on Long Island?

While parents and teachers are taking pride — and deserved pats on the back — in getting this year’s seniors through their first 12 years of schooling, it doesn’t stop there. The older generation and its leadership must continue to take action to transform Long Island into an attractive and affordable place for young adults to live.

“We spend a lot of money educating our kids here,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) acknowledged in his 2018 State of the County address. “Too many of them have left for other parts of the country, where they are helping to power their regional economies. We have to stop that.”

For the first time in two decades, there is a glimmer of hope that the brain drain trend is starting to slow. The population of people between ages 20 and 34 living in Nassau and Suffolk counties has increased by 7.6 percent from 2010 to 2015 — for the first time since 1990 — according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2015 Population Estimates, as stated in a June 2017 report by the Long Island Association. LIA is a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies, programs and projects that benefit Long Island and support economic development and infrastructure investments.

However, there’s still 100,000 fewer residents in the 20 to 34 age group on Long Island than in 1990. So, there’s still a ways to go in attracting and keeping bright, young professionals on Long Island.

To this end, Suffolk County Legislature’s Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville) proposed legislation June 22 that would instruct Suffolk’s Department of Economic Development and Planning to create a pilot program to address the issues causing millennials to leave for less expensive areas. While there are few specific details available on this proposal, Gregory has pointed to other municipalities creating programs that help young adults with student debt purchase homes while still paying down their loans.

This is but one step in the right direction. As the Class of 2018 disperses, their parents’ work shifts from helping with science projects and math homework to advocating for local change that will improve the quality of life young adults can expect on Long Island. Better entry-level job opportunities that offer competitive salaries without requiring travel into the city are needed, and more affordable housing and assistance to put the down payment on a house to help start a family are also important.

Take a few days to rejoice and celebrate with the graduating Class of 2018, but there is much work to be done creating a brighter, more youthful future for Long Island.

I was somewhat bemused and slightly amused to read in almost one breath “the continuous drum beat of liberal bias” that followed the title of “Not all Trump supporters are the same” in the June 7 edition of The Village Times Herald.

Apparently, it is acceptable to Mr. Parmegiani to throw all those who disapprove of Donald Trump either as president or as a man into the bin of “liberal” but it is unacceptable to group Trump supporters into a single bin.

I can give you a very long list of well-known conservatives who highly disapprove of Donald Trump and especially of President Donald Trump.

To name but a few: George Will, Bill Kristol, Ben Witte, Peggy Noonan, David Frum, Sen. Ben Sasse and many more.

The reason I clump all Trump voters into the same bin is that they voted for a man who was known to cheat workers and honest businessmen out of their earned money; who was well known to be sexually abusive

and was clearly dishonest, having a record of lying that compares to no other known president or candidate for it.

I find anyone who would vote for such a man no matter what the excuse or justification to be just as dishonorable as the man they voted for.

So far, this president has had an administration so filled with scandal and corruption that you have to go back to before I was born — 1948 — to find any other administration to compare it with. I am never going to agree with every policy of any president, and I will speak out against those policies that I find wrong no matter who holds the office.

I spoke out against President Obama when he increased the number of deportations, and when I felt he was not doing enough for the environment, education and health care. I still admired what he did do and the honesty and professionalism of his administration. He did not have one single scandal while

in office. He was well respected and listened to across the entire world. Our standing in the world increased greatly while he was president. He took the economy he inherited, which was as close to the Great Depression as you can get, and pulled us back to high employment and a stable state of growth. While he could not get the health care he and most of us wanted, he did at least get us to the point where insurance companies could not dump you if you became ill or changed your job. That to me was the game changer.

I will continue to stand up and speak out against policies that I consider wrong or immoral, and this president is certainly keeping me busy. Perhaps, if he starts cleaning house of people like Pruitt and other swamp creatures, I can take him seriously on other issues; but so far I have seen nothing positive to say about this man.

Marvel at letters from progressives Recently I watched the latest riot, this one in Portland, Oregon. The Soros-backed anarchist group Antifa decided to attack an American prayer group downtown, but this time, for the first time, the clueless, masked baby SS mob, armed with projectiles and pepper spray took a beating. Must-see TV at its finest.

This is the Obama legacy. A legacy of racial division, antiChristian/Jewish street warfare right out of the Alinsky playbook. During the eight years of Obama’s administration, the unbridled war on our police was the most violent since the Capone/Dillinger days. Antifa, Black Lives Matter and most of the prominent violent anarchist groups in this country are controlled from Chicago, Barry’s hometown.

So as I sit here in Pleasantville, far from the madding crowd, I marvel at some of the letters appearing in this forum from

self-anointed “educated” and “progressive” types. Most entertaining are the letters from the aforementioned demographic who can’t resist calling the president “chump” or ruminating over what the president is “doing” to our country. Compared to who? A nasty unhinged commie from Vermont or a self-enriching, pathological liar named Hillary, who’s gone unindicted longer than Gotti and Capone combined. Unemployment is the lowest in 40 years, and I’m feeling good for the first time in 20 years. Anyone who votes along party lines alone, is a dimwit.

Oh, Trump said the “p” word 90 years ago? Whoopdidoo.

Show me a man who hasn’t said that word, and I’ll show you Liberace. There is now true hope. The massive damage done

by Clinton/Bush/Clinton/Obama may indeed be survivable.

Along with Reagan, Eisenhower

and JFK, Trump is on track to becoming one of the great presidents post-WWII. The most amazing thing about the 2016 election was not the defeat of Hillary; it was the fact that Trump beat 16 other professional GOPers for the nomination. War with Russia has been averted, the murderous invaders from the Spanish Empire are in deep peril, and Wall Street is off-the-charts hot. Only a communist, anarchist or brainwashed misanthrope will keep marching, marching to Shibboleth. I love President Trump, and the CNN/ NBC/Washington Compost provocateurs are withering under the weight of their own endless propaganda. Celebrating all of America on Independence Day

F

irst of all, we’re going to need a big cake. No, I know you think most cakes are big and that most people’s eyes are bigger than their stomachs, but this one is going to have to be huge.

You see, we’re about to celebrate an important birthday. Next week, it’s the 242nd birthday of the country, so we’ll need a place to put all the candles.

So, what do we get for the country that has everything?

Well, for starters, it depends on what you imagine

D. None of the above

Seriously, this is one huge country and we haven’t even discussed the last two states to join the union.

Alaska is a gem, with vistas stretching as far as the eye can see, as shimmering spawning salmon make streams and rivers glow orange, while bears nibble here and there as cars and buses pass them along the sides of the highways.

Hawaii reminded everyone this year that it’s a volcanic archipelago. It’s a magnificent and lush combination of majestic mountains, bamboo forests and striking cliffs.

So, what would this great country of ours want for its birthday?

Well, maybe it would want us, even for a day, to all get along. We are all Americans, we have all heard the stories about the forefathers who fought for this country, who defied the British, and who wanted what was best for them and, all these years later, us.

Maybe it would want us to tidy up.

After all, who doesn’t want to look

good on their birthday, right? We could clean up our yards, clean up our neighbor’s yard, remove trash from the area around the school, a place so many enthusiastic children recently abandoned for the start of the summer.

Maybe we should take a moment to think about how we are helping ourselves, or others, reach the American Dream. We all want life to be better, but maybe we can encourage others to strive for, and reach, a dream that anyone from anywhere could reach greatness. We are not like Europeans of past centuries, who limited opportunities for success by class, gender or ancestry.

The home of the free and the land of the brave is all about allowing anyone from any walk of life to reach their potential and, more importantly, to decide their potential.

America is about celebrating youth. We are a young country, filled with hope for the future, unbridled optimism and joy.

Regardless of what politicians in Washington say, we are also a country that likes to laugh, even at ourselves.

We have a great sense of humor. Need a laugh? Watch “Bridesmaids” or “Groundhog Day” — or if in the mood for something older, “Animal House.”

We pull apart and then we come together. We speak with different accents, depending on where we come from or what part of the world our ancestors originally inhabited.

When we come together, we are unstoppable, finding our best selves from the roles we play in companies, on teams, or in close-knit families that stand ready, willing and able to support each other through any challenge.

Sure, we can hang the flag, eat a hot dog, have a barbecue and sing a few American songs to celebrate our country.

But, hey, maybe we can also look for the best in each other and in ourselves as we again give hope to the notion that a rising tide of optimism, of cooperation, of compassion lifts all boats.

And by the time the movie was over, I believe there was an enriched sense of community among those in the room.

As much as we want to know where we came from, we also enjoy a sense of belonging to a community. One viewer from farther away came up to me at the end and said he wished for that pride in his city. That particularly pleased me because we as publishers of the hometown paper have always sought to strengthen those ties. Strong communities can be a powerful force for good. They also want to get the latest local news by reading the local papers, which is not so bad for us.

Making a film was a new experience.

My eldest grandson, Benji, the director of “One Life to Give,” aspires to be a professional filmmaker as his career progresses, and as we saw he has already acquired many filmmaking skills in college, where he is now a senior. He also brought to us for this venture a remarkable hardworking and talented crew of young professionals in front of and behind the camera. Thanks to our local connections, which included local historical societies and carefully preserved sites, we were able to put together an authentic venue for the

shoot. The weather was wondrously cooperative, and actors and historic re-enactors of considerable skill joined the team. Local restaurants, costume outfitters, dry cleaners, scenery designers, makeup and special effects people and SBU, among others, made in-kind contributions. Muskets and cannons were procured and brought to the filming site, often among hilarious circumstances. One rule became obvious: No day would go exactly as planned.

A number of generous local businesses helped us meet costs by agreeing to be sponsors, and for their help they received credits before and after the film. Their names will be seen near and far as a number of groups have asked to show the film.

My major contribution was offering my house for the 15 young people and their equipment throughout the shoot. I can tell you there was not a clear view of floor or rug during those 16 days. It was great fun with high excitement but on their next film, the shooting of which starts in two weeks’ time for release next year, they will definitely stay in a hotel.

unday was a magical night. After a full year of work, we offered you, our readers and viewers, the initial screening of “One Life to Give.”

Our first full-length film, the story is set at the beginning of the Revolutionary War more than 200 years ago, and is about Nathan Hale, Benjamin Tallmadge, George Washington and the events leading up to the founding of the Culper Spy Ring.

The location for this screening was the 1,000seat Staller Center off Nicholls Road within Stony Brook University, and to my amazement and delight, we filled the

This full house by itself is a most gratifying testimony to your regard and to the pulling power of our newspapers

and digital media, especially competing as we were with graduation day at the local high school.

It’s also a lot more. In these chaotic and divided times, I believe we yearn to understand our common origin as a nation and the history that we share.

History after all is glue that holds us together and, to the surprise of many students who hate social studies in school, is also the series of fascinating stories about people, personalities and events that help define who we are today. And since our film is focused on local people and events, we share a pride of place. Our area has been dubbed the “cradle of history” because of its brutal occupation by the British, the activities of the spy ring and the military skirmishes during the war. Long Island, in fact, endured the longest occupation of any part of the colonies because its farms and forests, livestock and fish made up the unwilling breadbasket for the major British garrison in New York City.

So viewers came to see the history and the authentic local scenes and events, and the familiar faces of many residents as they served as extras on screen. Also some were simply curious.
