Voters in the Village of Poquott said yes to the future while keeping the status quo.

Incumbent mayor Dee Parrish and sitting trustees William Poupis and Chris Schleider, who ran on the Future ticket in the June 19 village election, retained their seats.

Parrish defeated challenger John Richardson 240 to 204, according to village Deputy Clerk Cindy Schleider. Richardson is a board trustee who is currently serving his first term.

Trustees Poupis and Schleider received 235 and 241 votes, respectively, beating challengers Felicia Chillak, who received 199 votes, and Dianna Padilla, who garnered 204, according to the deputy clerk.

An issue of contention in the village for the last few years has been the proposal of a community dock, which all Future candidates support despite tabling a vote on the dock earlier this year due to bids coming in at more than the $150,000 originally expected.

“We have to look at everything before we decide how this is going to impact residents in the future,” Parrish said in a previous interview with TBR News Media.

Poupis and Schleider, who were appointed to their positions by the mayor in 2017, said they felt it was important to get the stamp of approval from their fellow residents.

“One of the things about being appointed you don’t necessarily feel that you have the mandate of the people behind you,” Schleider said in a prior interview with TBR News Media. “I was honored by Dee asking, but I think it’s important to have the voice of the

The day after the election Poupis said he looked forward to getting back to work with his fellow village board members.

“There’s lots of work ahead,” Poupis said. “We got a village to bring together. We got a lot of great ideas about incorporating some things into our standard once-a-month village meetings, maybe having some town hall meetings every other month, so that people in an unofficial forum can come in, speak freely, voice concerns, with those concerns voice some solutions and as a group work together to find the common goals.”

On the Facebook page Poquott Life Matters, Richardson thanked those who supported him, Chillak and Padilla.

“The plans and ideas we spoke about on your doorstep, I truly hope will become a reality in the future of our village,” Richardson wrote. “As a trustee, I will continue to be your voice on the board. I welcome all concerns big or small.”

3V community rallies for organ donations with Mets legend

For one sports legend, life has thrown him a curveball, but he’s not sitting it out on the bench.

Former baseball player Ed Kranepool, a member of the 1969 Miracle Mets, is rallying for New York state residents to bring miracles to the 10,000 state residents beside him on the organ transplant waiting list. Kranepool is in need of a kidney transplant due to diabetes-related kidney issues. He’s lived with the disease for the last 40 years.

To help him with his mission, John Tsunis, CEO and chairman of Gold Coast Bank and the owner of the Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook, organized a rally June 12 at the

Gold Coast Bank in Setauket. Community business leaders of the Three Village Chamber of Commerce, representatives from the Suffolk County Legislature and The Ward Melville Heritage Organization came together for the rally, where those in attendance vowed to sign donor registration forms.

“It’s time for us to act and enroll as organ donors,” Tsunis said. “One organ donor can save up to eight lives. One organ donor can change the course of history for a child in need or a New York Mets legend, like Ed Kranepool. So today many of us are filling out a form, a simple form, committing to do one thing. That’s to donate life.”

Tsunis said the donor registration forms can be found at all of the Gold Coast Bank branches.

“If I understand the statistic correctly, we are 50 out of 50 states to donate organs, and I don’t want to live in a state that is selfish like that,” Tsunis said. “If we have the opportunity to fill out this form and donate an organ when the time is appropriate — we could help somebody else in our lives and in our community.”

Based off the percentage of population registered, New York state is ranked 51 out of 52 registries in the country for participation, according to Aisha Tator, New York Alliance for Donation executive director.

“The awareness, that’s the whole key,” said Kranepool, who attended the rally.

“People need to be aware of the programs

The 73-year-old’s procedure will take place at Stony Brook Hospital if a match is found.

“Not everybody has to go to Manhattan,” said Kranepool — who lives in Woodbury —

East Setauket farmers market partners with hospital

As she works in conjunction with physical therapist Denise Dahlgren, the funds raised at the Three Village Market will go toward exercise equipment, including yoga mats and pedometers for participants in the Healthy Forks series.

Linda Bily, director of cancer patient advocacy and community outreach at Stony Brook Medicine, said the hospital always welcomes donations from the community. She said patients have received items including cards from Scouts and hats knitted by senior citizens. One patient who received both a hat and a card was inspired to ask her company to create bags for cancer patients that were filled with hand sanitizers, tissues, lip balm and more.

“It’s hard for someone that isn’t going through cancer treatments to understand the value of these small, comforting things that say, ‘Hey, I got your back. Someone is looking out for you,’” Bily said.

Johnson said the market almost didn’t come together this year. She decided to help manage the market and reached out to the owners of Ann Marie’s Farmstand of Port Jefferson Station. They were the first to agree to be part of the new market and other businesses quickly joined the list of vendors.

The market opened June 1, and Johnson said each week more people are stopping by.

Visitors to the farmers market on the grounds of the Three Village Historical Society every Friday afternoon will discover new things this year, including a mission to help out a good cause.

The East Setauket Farmers Market has now been named the Three Village Artisan and Farmers Market, or nicknamed Three Village Market for short. Linda Johnson, owner of Chocology Unlimited and market manager, said the new name reflects the growing participation of vendors from across the Three Village area and the artisans, musicians and other makers on hand every week. This year, the market aims to raise money with various fundraisers throughout the season for Stony Brook Cancer Center,

specifically the Healthy Forks and Move to Heal Survivorship series.

“We want to make the market more of a gathering place and at the same time give back to the communituy,” Johnson said.

The business owner said it made sense to partner with the cancer center’s program.

“It’s all about nutrition and eating healthy, and how people can eat healthy but also not spend a lot of money,” she said.

Jennifer Fitzgibbon, Stony Brook Cancer Center’s oncology nutritionist and the Healthy Forks program coordinator, said she was pleased when she heard the farmers market’s fundraisers would benefit the program.

“I am a firm believer in the addition of fresh produce and what the market features, so the fact that we’re going to be working together, I’m so excited about it,” Fitzgibbon said.

The nutritionist says she takes participants in the program to grocery stores, including Trader Joe’s, to show them how to make healthier choices while eating affordably, and she plans to take them to the Three Village Market this year.

“I love going there,” she said. “I just think it’s such a beautiful climate. You go there and everyone is so friendly, and every little spot you look at — for example, the organic herbs and the pepper hot sauce — you can really get a nutritional sense from every little piece.”

“People have been very happy, which is really nice to see,” she said. “They’re liking what they’re seeing and feeling.”

Car break-ins

Two men from Port Jefferson Station, one 23-year-old and the other 24, allegedly gained entry into a detached garage at a home on Barnum Avenue in Port Jefferson sometime between June 11 and June 12 and stole tools and a tablet from an unlocked 2016 Ford van within the garage, according to police. The pair also allegedly entered an unlocked 2004 Honda parked in a parking lot on Arden Place in Port Jefferson June 11 at about 11 p.m. and took a pocketbook containing cash, personal items and a debit card, police said. They were arrested June 12 in Port Jeff Station and both charged with two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny and third-degree burglary.

Drug bust

At about 10:30 a.m. June 15, a 27-yearold woman from Rocky Point allegedly possessed heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana while on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station, according to police. She was arrested and charged with two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.

On June 12 at about 8:30 p.m., a 52-yearold man from Lake Ronkonkoma allegedly engaged in a fight and screamed obscenities at the Port Jefferson Station Long Island Rail Road station, and also allegedly possessed prescription drugs without a prescription, according to police. The educator, who currently lives in Selden and grew up in Holbrook, said she remembers going to West Meadow Beach for the first time 10 years ago and meeting Gerle.

“I remember loving this little beach,” she said. “I was used to the South Shore because I was a Sachem girl and grew up in Holbrook. But I think I’ve grown to really love the North Shore beaches. The sand flats that West Meadow has and those beautiful sunsets because of it being situated from north to south, overlooking the west. And then having the creek and the salt marsh on the other side of Trustees Road is something so unique to West Meadow which sets it apart from all the other beaches.”

Tips and tricks when handling ticks

for the dual purpose of rejuvenating the local quail population while curbing the rising tick problem, which gets worse every year with a lack of natural predators.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the number of illnesses related to ticks, mosquitos and fleas have tripled from 2004 to 2016, with 69,313 diseases reported from ticks in New York state in that time. In 2013, the CDC estimated that nationally there were 300,000 cases of Lyme disease annually, which is carried by deer tick.

Brosdal’s daughter Erika suffered through the pains of Lyme disease when she was 13 years old. As a father, watching his daughter lay in pain on the couch was heartbreaking.

“She couldn’t breathe,” Brosdal said. “It affected her so terribly — she was an A-grade student until that happened, and then she had to read everything twice. I give her a lot of credit — she’s 44 now and has two master’s degrees and she’s a high school psychologist.”

Brosdal said the quails have an important job to do and “can do a lot of good.”

Powers said multiple schools participate in his program and will release the quails in parks all over Long Island. If any school or group is interested in raising quails, Powers can be contacted through www.yc2n.com.

According to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, over 900 calls were received from people seeking advice from its tick helpline in 2017.

If a tick is found on your body, there are ways to safely remove it: • Tweezers are the best tool and should be placed as close to the skin as possible — grabbing the tick’s head.

• Pull upward with a slow and steady motion and try to avoid breaking the tick in half. If the head snaps off, know disease transmission is not possible without the entire body.

• Disinfect the bit area with rubbing alcohol or soap and water and contact a physician. Consider placing the tick in a baggie or pill vial.

• Pay attention to your health in the weeks following.

There are also ways to reduce your exposure, like checking for ticks daily, especially under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees or between legs and on the hairline and scalp.

Remove and dry clothing on high heat as soon as possible to kill ticks. They can’t be drowned by washing. You can create a tick-safe yard by mowing frequently and keeping leaves raked. Also be sure to treat dogs and cats.

One tick can carry multiple pathogens.

Deer ticks or blacklegged ones have no white markings, are brown or black in color and are very, very small. Both nymph and adult stages can transmit diseases like Lyme and babesiosis.

Reflecting on those who made America’s independence possible

Tallmadge was promoted to the rank of major April 7, 1777. In June Tallmadge’s troop, composed entirely of dapple gray horses, left their base at Litchfield, Connecticut, and proceeded to New Jersey where Washington reviewed the detachment and complimented Tallmadge on the appearance of his horsemen.

Washington gave the troops of the 2nd Regiment little chance to rest after they came to headquarters, and Tallmadge wrote, “Since my arrival at camp I have had as large an allowance of fighting as I could, in a serious mood, wish for.”

In September and October, Tallmadge took part in the Battle of Germantown.

In November of 1777, when the American army finally went into winter quarters at Valley Forge, Tallmadge was ordered, “with a respectable detachment of dragoons,” to act as an advance corps of observation.

During these maneuvers into the nomans-land area between the American and British lines around Philadelphia, Tallmadge

again engaged in obtaining intelligence of the enemy’s movements and plans.

In January of 1778, the 2nd Regiment of Light Dragoons was ordered to Trenton, New Jersey, where the other cavalry regiments were assembling to spend the winter.

Throughout the spring, Tallmadge waited for action. In June the 2nd Regiment was assigned to take up a position in advance of the American lines near Dobbs Ferry. In July Washington returned to the Hudson Valley with most of his army. With the arrival of the French fleet under Count d’Estaing in July, the pressing need for organized military intelligence could no longer be avoided.

Officers, and especially dragoon officers, were encouraged to find intelligent correspondents who could furnish reliable information to American headquarters.

During the summer of 1778, Tallmadge was able to establish, with Washington’s approval, a chain of American spies on Long Island and in New York, the now recognized Culper Spy Ring, feeding information through Setauket, across Long Island Sound to Fairfield, Connecticut, and by mounted dragoon to Washington’s headquarters.

As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, July 4, it is fitting to reflect on the actions of some of the men and women who helped win our independence.

The Revolutionary War had a great effect on the residents of Long Island. After the Declaration of Independence was signed July 4, 1776, many Long Islanders, especially in Suffolk County, received it enthusiastically. Their enthusiasm was short-lived, however, for on Aug. 27, 1776, the British took possession of New York City, following the Battle of Long Island in Brooklyn, and with its possession of all of Long Island. The residents were to be under British control for the next seven years.

A large number of Long Island Patriots fled to Connecticut and became refugees, giving up their lands, homes and most of their possessions. Those who stayed lived under often harsh, military rule. The residents were forced to provide whatever His Majesty’s forces needed. Cattle, feed, grains, food, wagons and horses, especially cordwood for fuel was taken, and in most cases, not paid for. Long Island was virtually stripped of its mature trees during the first three to five years of the war to supply lumber and fuel for New York City.

In addition to suffering at the hands of the British, many Long Islanders were also considered fair game by their former friends and neighbors in Connecticut who would cross the Sound to harass the British, steal supplies, destroy material the British might use and take captives. The captives were often taken in exchange for the Patriots captured by the British.

Benjamin Tallmadge, Gen. George Washington’s chief of intelligence from the summer of 1778 until the end of the Revolutionary War, was born and spent his youth in Setauket, Long Island. Following four years at Yale College in New Haven and a year teaching in Wethersfield, Connecticut, Tallmadge joined the Continental Army. He took an active part in the Battle of Brooklyn and progressed rapidly in rank. As a captain in the 2nd Regiment of Continental Light Dragoons — Washington’s first fast attack force mounted on horses — Tallmadge came under Washington’s notice. By December of 1776, Washington had asked Tallmadge, in addition to his dragoon responsibilities,

Brookhaven wins $20M prize in shared services competition

Sharing is a beautiful thing. It can foster friendships and goodwill and even net a municipality a $20 million check.

Town of Brookhaven was selected June 14 as the winner of the Municipal Consolidation and Efficiency Competition, an initiative announced by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) in 2016 that challenged local governments to submit in-depth proposals for reducing the cost of living through streamlining services offered by overlapping taxing jurisdictions like villages, schools, ambulance companies, library and fire districts, towns and counties. Brookhaven was among six finalists as of summer 2017, the others being smaller upstate municipalities. Each of the nine incorporated villages within Brookhaven passed resolutions identifying the areas in which a consolidation of services makes sense and officially pledged partnership with the town in pursuing the projects last year.

Some of the projects in the town’s proposal included the consolidation of tax collection and tax assessor services; utilizing Brookhaven’s staffed maintenance workers rather than putting out bids for contracts; creating a regional salt facility to be used during snow removal; using town contracts to buy in bulk for things like asphalt replacement, which yield a better price due to Brookhaven’s size compared to the smaller villages; and creating a digital record keeping and storage system.

“We expect this grant to help us reduce costs to our taxpayers and save our taxpayers millions of dollars,” Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) said in announcing the win for the town prior to the June 14 public meeting.

“So while we’re delighted that we won, out of all of the municipalities in the state, we were selected — we’re very happy for our taxpayers.”

The supervisor estimated in July 2017 in total, the projects would result in a savings of about $66 million for taxpayers — a return of more than three times the investment made by the state. He thanked town’s Chief of Operations Matt Miner for his work in crafting the proposal and Deputy Supervisor Dan Panico (R-Manorville) for going to Albany to present the town’s plan. Romaine added that winning the grant wouldn’t have been possible if not for the work of the entire town board and other staff members from all town departments.

“We worked very hard — we all contributed,” the supervisor said.

In a 2017 interview, Romaine and Miner both stressed the importance of allowing the villages to maintain their autonomy despite the consolidation of services. The projects will emphasize ways to eliminate unnecessary redundancies in government services while allowing incorporated villages to maintain individual oversight. Romaine also dispelled possible concerns about loss of jobs. He said he expects the phase out of antiquated departments through retirements, stating no layoffs will be required to make the consolidation projects happen.

R.C. Murphy Junior High School students competed in and captured first place during the 2018 MoMathlon Tournament of Champions at the MoMath Museum in New York City, supported and sponsored by Con Edison and Brookhaven National Laboratory.

The tournament of champions consisted of the top 10 middle school teams in New York State: two from Suffolk County, two from Manhattan, two from the Bronx, two from Queens and two from Westchester County. R.C. Murphy team members, Claire

Yang, Matthew Chen, Carolyn Liu, Ashwinaa Vaithianathan and Ethan Yu, were one of the top teams that represented Suffolk County.

The tournament had four rounds: individual, team, mixed team and team relay. The Three Village Central School District students were not allowed to use a calculator, only their brains and scrap paper. They also were given an iPad on which to view the problems and submit their answers. The top three teams were awarded medals and a trophy to bring home for the school.

He was a 19-year-old bartender, she a freshman at nearby Stony Brook University.

The place was a bar called The Country Corner in Setauket.

A few years later, June 16, 1968, Paul Schlesier and Ellen Adelman got married.

The wedding took place at the Church of the Incarnation on St. Nicholas Avenue in New York City’s Washington Heights. They celebrated their reception with family and friends in the basement of her mother’s nearby apartment building.

Ellen had graduated from Stony Brook in 1967 and Paul in 1968. Paul went on to get a master’s and become a history teacher in the Smithtown Central School District. He spent most of those years teaching eighth grade at Great Hollow Middle School.

Ellen worked as a clerk at the Port Jefferson Library, as an aide in the Longwood Central School District and later in the library at Great Hollow Middle School.

The students also showcased their artistic talents during the celebration. They made more than 200 bookmarks, which they sold at the celebration for a $1 each. As a result of the generosity of the attendees, the class raised more than $300 for the Fred Rogers Center.

They had two children: Danielle in 1972 and Kevin in 1976. Danielle currently works as a realtor in the Boston, Massachusetts, area. Kevin is the director of exhibits at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. He lives in the Charlotte, North Carolina, area with his wife Eileen and their two children, 12-yearold Natalie and 7-year-old Gus. Paul and Ellen still live in the house where they raised their children in Coram.

They retired in June of 2000 and have since been traveling the world. Together they’ve enjoyed more than 50 cruises throughout the Caribbean and to Europe, South America, Australia and Asia.

The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 16. Their children and grandchildren threw a party for friends and family at The Country Corner, the bar where they met all those years ago.

John Hines, 59, of Port Jefferson, died at his home May 26 with the love of his life, Paula, by his side. He began playing golf at the age of 9 and went on to become a PGA professional.

John leaves behind his five children, John, Taylor, Kelly, Travis and Brandy, as well as three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine and Donald Hines. One of nine children, he will be lovingly remembered by his eight brothers and sisters and their spouses: Cathy Gleisberg, James and Laura Hines, Mary and Howard Hudson, Donald and Brenda Hines, Elizabeth and Danny Grund, Barbara and Edward Prince, Patricia and Don Massaro and Joseph and Tricia Hines. John is also survived and cherished by many nieces and nephews — too many to name.

John played in his first PGA tournament at the age of 23. His career as a player was cut short by illness, but John did not let that stop his passion for the game. He went on to become a teacher, a mentor and, above all, an advocate for veterans with his work with the Folds of Honor, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing scholarships to family members of fallen servicemen and women. For his enormous contributions and dedication, John was awarded the 2011 PGA Patriots Award, along with many other well-deserved honors.

Services were held at Bryant Funeral Home in East Setauket June 9.

David A. Lewis

David A. Lewis, a longtime Port Jefferson resident, died Jan. 18 at his new residence in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

David worked for Swezey Fuel before his early retirement due to kidney failure.

While living in Port Jefferson, he was very active in the fire department, serving in many leadership roles. His spirit of community service continued after his retirement, both in his church and at the local food pantry. After a successful kidney transplant, David’s quality of life improved and allowed him to give back to those with similar ailments. He loved trains, Port Jefferson Fire Department and his family and friends, as well as his German shepherd, King.

David owned and resided in the Port Jefferson landmark house, Shang-ri-la — the stone house on Belle Terre Road across from St. Charles Hospital.

He is survived by his parents, Alfred and Betty; stepmothers, Carmie and Carol; his sister Anjelica Vietti (Dominick); brother Kevin; nephew Jedidiah; niece Maria; stepbrothers, Scott and David; and stepsister Audrey.

Funeral and firematic services were held at Bryant Funeral Home of East Setauket April 9, with Rev. Gary Gudzik conducting the ceremony. Interment followed at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Port Jefferson.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) announced the launch of the Reclaim Our Water film contest for public service announcements and short films. The contest, which coincides with National Maritime Day, is open to all New York state residents of any age and is designed to raise awareness of water quality issues and the impact of nitrogen pollution.

“Public education is a critical component to ensuring that residents understand just how important our efforts are in protecting our water quality on Long Island,” Bellone said. “This contest is a terrific opportunity for anyone to develop their own creative and informative films to expose the significance on this environmental issue.”

The contest, which was first launched in 2014, is presented by the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning with the collaboration of the Suffolk County Film Commission in support of Bellone’s initiative.

The Reclaim Our Water initiative seeks to reduce nitrogen pollution from cesspools and septic systems, which contributes to beach closures, restrictions on harvesting of shellfish, harmful algae blooms and fish kills in Suffolk County waterways, through the connection of communities to sewer systems and the installation of advanced on-site wastewater treatment systems.

Filmmakers will be judged on creativity

and originality, quality, technical accuracy and content of their public service announcements or short films, that can range from 15 seconds to one-minute long.

Submissions for the contest must be posted by Monday, Aug. 20. Winners will be chosen by Friday, Aug. 31, and announced Monday, Sept. 3. Screening of the winning films will take place at the Long Island Maritime Museum at 86 West Ave., West Sayville Saturday, Sept. 15. The screening of the winning films coincides with the start of National SepticSmart Week, which is held by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from Sept. 17-21 and is designed to educate homeowners, local officials and communities on the proper care and maintenance of their septic systems.

Tesla Science Center’s new historic status will help it into the future

With close to 9,500 letters signed from all over the world in support, the Wardenclyffe property in Shoreham, home to 20thcentury inventor and scientist Nikola Tesla’s last standing laboratory, was approved for state historical status June 7.

“From all over the world people responded to us, including individuals, organizations and public officials — it’s really cool,” said Jane Alcorn, president of the board of directors of the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe.

“We’re hoping that since it was a unanimous

decision on the part of New York State that [the federal review board] will look upon all of that favorably, as well as [recognize] we had so many national and international supporters.”

The historic review board at New York State Historic Preservation Office voted unanimously to recommend the property to the state historic register. Jennifer Betsworth, a historic preservation specialist for the state preservation department, said the review board members were enthusiastic to see the application before they even received it.

“They were all excited to see this coming forward,” Betsworth said of the board member’s feelings. “It’s been one of these properties that people have known about for some time, and everyone wanted to see it [have] a positive future.”

The state review board forwarded the application to the federal historical review board under the National Park Service, whose review process should take one to two months. Betsworth said that while the federal review board often looks favorably on New York applications, there is no guarantee it will be accepted.

To prove the case for historic preservation, a historic architect consultant was hired to document the land and its legacy. The Tesla Science Center board members spent a month crafting a 92-page document that went

But other than the landmark brick building in the center of the property that once was Tesla’s main lab space, the other concrete and wood structures on the property were built after Tesla’s time.

“For us we’re still in a marathon — we still have a lot more running to do,” said Marc Alessi, the science center’s executive director.

“But it was nice to make this milestone.”

Having the property on the New York historic register allows the science center to apply for state grants that specifically require historic significance. That is important, Alessi said, because the science center is winding up its master plan this month, which includes finalizing and designing a planned Tesla

museum and science center. Though he did not wish to say which buildings he expects to house the museum, AlessI said construction should be finished and the museum open to the public by the end of next year.

“We want to get open to the public as quickly as possible” he said. “Once we open our first building to the public it will be an ongoing project to expand into other buildings on the property.”

Because of the strong public response, Alessi said the science center hopes to involve its international fan base through more crowdfunding opportunities down the road.

“We know that [the letters came from] the crowd that helped save this place,” Alessi said.

“And we want to make sure they stay engaged.”

With the game tied 3-3, Garden City’s Mike Handal’s RBI gave Nassau the lead, and a Suffolk error brought in the eventual game-winning run in the 14th annual game sponsored by Rawlings, proceeds from which will benefit the Cohen Children’s Northwell Health Physician Partners Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics center in New Hyde Park.

Doran proved that when he cleanly fielded a ball rocketed in the dirt, and passed it to short stop Kyle Johnson who turned a double play with bases loaded to retire the side and keep Suffolk up 1-0 in the second.

Johnson, who will continue his baseball career with Stony Brook University, said he’s been in awe of all the effort and commitment that goes into putting together the event for senior elites.

“This game’s awesome — Blue Chip; Jim Clark, who put this together years ago — it shows how [talented] Long Island is,” the soon-to-be Newfield grad said. “You’ve seen the guys this year that got drafted and a lot of those guys played in this game, so it’s an honor to be out here.”

Suffolk made it a two-run lead in the top of the third when West Islip outfielder Jake Guercio crossed home plate for the second time. And Suffolk’s hitting didn’t stop there.

Johnson stole second just ahead of a tag with Brentwood’s Justin Aviles in the batter’s box, but Aviles’ grounder toward third was thrown home in time to get Doran for the second out. Grillo smacked the ball

deep to right next to load the bases, but Suffolk couldn’t capitalize on the chance.

Plainview JFK’s Ryan Saltzman hit a sacrifice fly to put Nassau on the board in the bottom of the inning, and Plainedge’s Jason Bottari did the same to make it a new game.

With no outs in the fourth, Newfield pitcher Bobby Vath hit into a double play, but Sayville’s Jake Russo raced home from third in time to help Suffolk retake the lead. The team looked to build on its lead in the top of the fifth when Mount Sinai third baseman George Rainer took four consecutive pitches at the plate to draw a walk, but two straight strikeouts ended the inning.

“It’s a great feeling to be playing with the best players on Long Island — I really enjoyed it,” said Rainer, who signed a

letter of intent to play at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. “It was a great day to end my varsity baseball career. I had a lot of fun and I can’t wait to see what college has in store.”

Harborfields pitcher Gavin Buda, the only athlete chosen to play in both Blue Chip Prospects games — the Grand Slam Challenge and Empire Challenge football game — took over the mound in the bottom of the fifth and retired the side in order.

Up to that point Westhampton running back Dylan Laube has been the center of all things Long Island offense June 15, powering his way to three touchdowns — accumulating 151 all-purpose yards. He was voted most outstanding player of the game.

He opened Long Island’s scoring by running off left tackle on the opening play of the second quarter and punching into the end zone to help tie the game 7-all.

Miller Place’s Tyler Ammirato, Long Island’s defensive captain, called signals on the field in an attempt to contain an explosive NYC offensive attack. His plan ended up in a Long Island defensive stop to take over on downs, and Laube was back to work on offense. Farmingdale’s Briant DeFelice made the extra-point kick following Laube’s second touchdown to put Long Island out front 14-7 with three minutes left in the third.

“It’s an awesome experience — you read the paper every week and you see all these guys’ names and to finally meet them and get to play with them,” Ammirato said. “I thought, ‘Our defensive stand right

here will be the turning point of this game — we’ve got to get a stop right here,’ but our offense is [also very] talented, they’ll punch it in.”

After NYC retied the game, Harborfields wide receiver Gavin Buda ran a sideline route and grabbed a 39-yard pass from Northport quarterback Ryan Walsh to put Long Island in excellent field position.

Buda, the only athlete in history to be chosen for both the Empire Challenge and last week’s Blue Chip Prospects Grand Slam Challenge baseball game said it was a fitting way to conclude his high school career.

“It’s sad, but this is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played in my life,” Buda said. “To meet all of these great superstars that I’ve played against and I’ve seen on the field, and to be friends with them now and to be their teammates, is just [an] amazing experience that I’m going to remember for the rest of my life.”

Laube finished what Buda started for a 21-14 advantage to end the scoring for the third. A rare NYC miscue helped Westhampton’s Nolan Quinlan pick off a pass and nearly return it for a touchdown before being forced out of bounds with 32 seconds left in the fourth. NYC’s defense made a stop that forced Long Island to try for a 36-yard field goal attempt, which was blocked.

With just over eight minutes left NYC made it a new game 21-all, but Long Island let time tick off the clock on a long drive to three consecutive first downs before Oceanside wide receiver Derek Cruz’s old-school flea-flicker jump ball. Cruz faked continuing his run and tossed the ball back

to quarterback Tommy Heuer, who waited for Massapequa wide receiver Owen Glascoe to break free.

Heuer hit Glascoe in the end zone for a 34-yard touchdown pass and DeFelice added his fourth extra-point kick for a 28-21 lead with 41 seconds left, which ended up being the game-winning point.

Ward Melville linebacker Zach Hobbes, who was instrumental in the Patriots’ rout of West Genesee in the state lacrosse final the weekend prior, was euphoric taking part in his final football game.

“I can’t think of a better way to end my senior year,” Hobbes said. “Winning a state championship and then to play in front of 9,000 people for the last game of my varsity football career, and to get a win like that, it’s an unbelievable experience.”

With five seconds left, NYC quarterback Mike Nicosia threw the Hail Mary to the left corner of the end zone, where he found Titus Leo. “That was a crazy experience — that’s just how I expected the game to go,” Buda said. “I knew both teams would put up a fight and right when we scored that last touchdown I knew you could not count them out. We had to make a defensive stop, but they drove down — they’re a great team. Our defense came up with a humongous stop and that sealed the deal.”

Letters to the editor

In light of current national events, a gnawing question surfaces — what happened to American values?

Even the staunchest defenders of President Donald Trump (R) have to concede what’s currently going on at the borders of the United States is deeply troubling — the separation of parents from their children.

The thought of just one child being separated from his or her family, crying for even a second, should be enough to deter any American with a conscience from supporting the president’s current policy. And yes, it is he and his administration’s to own, no matter what they want us to believe.

The president has falsely claimed the immoral and inhumane policy of separating children from their parents who cross the border illegally was “a Democrat’s law.” It is not a law. Now it turns out, he is signing an executive order ending this loathsome policy.

According to PolitiFact — a fact-checking site owned by the nonprofit Poynter Institute for Media Studies — the zero-tolerance policy that the Trump administration introduced in April, and one our president now admitted he has the power to change, has led to the massive uptick in children of all ages stuck in federal facilities without their parents.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Chief of Staff John Kelly have publicly intimated the aim of the new policy is to deter people from seeking asylum in the U.S. Even so, that hasn’t happened. Illegal immigrants are so desperate to flee their countries, they are walking into this crisis as the lesser of two terrible evils.

On June 15, federal officials announced that 1,995 children have been separated from 1,940 adults at the border between April 19 and May 31. Parents were referred for prosecution.

Facts matter regarding the details of the new policy, especially as the White House and cabinet members like Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen cry “fake news.” It would be accurate to say the Trump administration has not explicitly crafted a policy calling for the separation of families entering the U.S. illegally. However, zero tolerance has created the problem, because illegally crossing the border was previously handled as a civil offense. This allowed families to be detained together, but now, as the felonies are turning into criminal charges, parents are being taken into police custody while children are frequently sent to a Walmart-turned-detention center in Texas, which grows more crowded by the day, and other places around the country.

This is all indisputable fact. We as Americans have a responsibility to acknowledge this, politicians and officials.

We encourage anyone as troubled by this as we are to reach out to your houses of worship to see if they’re taking steps to aide those being affected. Who are looking after the safety and welfare of these children? Donate your time or money to one of the more than 10 rapid response networks aiding Long Island immigrants, or organizations like RAICES, a Texas-based nonprofit that provides legal defense for individuals in immigration court.

This is not our America, and this is not your America. This is not anyone’s America. We cannot remain silent. When government fails, it is up to us to stand up for one of America’s intrinsic values — freedom and the entitlement to basic human rights.

Have morals, and get your facts straight

Robyn Weinstein’s sixth-grade class at Nassakeag Elementary School is asking community members to be mindful when using straws.

This really is the last straw We are asking for your help with plastic straws.

It has come to our attention that the use of straws is affecting our oceans and polluting them.

Our sixth-grade class at Nassakeag Elementary School wrote to local food establishments asking them to reduce or stop using plastic straws.

According to Scholastic magazine, Americans use half-a-billion plastic straws each day. These have been found in the stomachs of deceased birds and dolphins and even in a

sea turtle’s nose.

On May 23, New York City Councilman Rafael Espinal proposed a ban on single-use plastic straws. Other cities that have already banned or limited the use of plastic straws in their restaurants include Seattle, Malibu, Fort Myers and Miami Beach. If they can do it, we certainly can, too.

The following local establishments to whom we wrote have responded positively to not using plastic straws: Green Turtle sports

bar, Primal Roots Organic Café, The Jazz Loft and Pentimento. The Good Steer in Lake Grove wrote back to us and agreed to use our logo with a new “straws by request only” policy. There are many other alternatives to plastic straws, such as bamboo, glass, paper or metal.

Why use one at all?

We hope you consider our request to help make the Earth a better place.

A list of Obama’s accomplishments In response to those people who disliked, and still dislike, President Obama and foolishly, endlessly and publicly accuse him of accomplishing next to nothing of value or importance during his two terms in office, let me list just some of the major, excellent accomplishments of his time in office.

Here we go: • Obama rescued us from the Great Recession, cutting unemployment from 10 percent to less than 5 percent.

• He initiated the Affordable Care Act, providing health insurance to more than 20 million previously uninsured citizens.

• He ended the absurd Iraq war.

• He terminated the existence of the vile, dangerous madman, Osama bin Laden.

• He got the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 passed during

the period of recession.

• He hugely helped our automobile industry in many ways.

• He helped place our nation en route to energy independence by 2020.

• He signed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, thus permitting millions to live in the U.S. legally, escape deportation and obtain work permits.

• He lowered the veterans’ homeless rate by 50 percent.

• He got rid of the Bush era’s ugly torture acts.

• He limited lobbyists’ access to the White House.

• He established the White House Office of Urban Affairs.

• He began improving relations with Cuba.

• He ended media blackouts of war casualties.

• He raised funds for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

• He helped pass the Credit

Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009.

• He raised standards for the fuel efficiency of cars.

• He greatly improved public school nutrition.

• He helped regulate the financial status of the nation.

• He helped fight pay discrimination aimed at women.

• He nominated the first Hispanic to the Supreme Court.

• He expanded embryonic stem cell research.

• He repealed the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy of the military.

• He phased out numerous, outdated war weapons.

• He increased funds for science and research labs.

• He helped, via legislation, physically paralyzed U.S. citizens.

• He won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Sifting through the memories

M

y family has become archeologists in our own home. After 12 years of collecting artwork from the kids’ classes in school, saving report cards and filing away binders from earlier grades, we are sifting through all that material, jettisoning or recycling what we don’t need.

Some of the finds are so remarkable that they stop us in our sorting tracks. My high school daughter isn’t much of a morning person.

of material, we found a note from her nursery school teacher. She described a charming little girl who often takes a while to get going each morning. That description is so apt today that we realized how much of people’s patterns and personalities form early in life.

Then, sorting further, we found papers from her spectacular first-grade teacher. A young woman with a soft voice and a determined style, her teacher brought out the best in our daughter, even early in the morning.

Our daughter kept a diary in that class, in which she shared stories about the family’s weekend activities.

Clearly, her brother was jealous of that writing, as we also found a diary from him in which he thanks her for creating a similar book for him to record his experiences. He shared his thoughts from the weekend, and the rest of the family readily wrote back to him.

His sister also kept handwritten notes from her first-grade teacher. The letters are all clear and distinct, and offer a positive and supportive tone.

Her teacher wrote to her, without talking down to her. What a wonderful role model. This teacher, through form and content, offered a ray of sunshine to our daughter even then, which was probably why we kept the papers.

These notes today take on a different meaning for us, as the teacher succumbed to cancer at a young age just a few years after our daughter had the privilege of being in her class. Our daughter was recently in a high school English class in which her first-grade teacher’s husband served as a part-time instructor. She shared some of these notes with him. He was delighted to take them home to his daughter, who was a toddler when her mother died. His daughter has particularly appreciated seeing her mother’s handwriting and feeling an indirect connection to the encouraging words she offered.

We have also sorted through dozens — OK, hundreds — of pictures that have transported us to earlier memories.

standing on the warning track at the old Yankee Stadium, bunched up in a winter coat on a December day.

We also found numerous pictures of our son on baseball fields of his own, surrounded by younger versions of teammates who have stuck with him through the years, as well as of friends who have gone their separate ways — or have pursued other sports.

Amid all the trophies from sports teams, we discovered certificates indicating that one or both of our children had been successful lunch helpers.

We have unearthed old VHS tapes of movies we watched numerous times as a family, including a few Disney classics and a surprisingly amusing Barbie version of “The Princess and the Pauper.”

In addition to sending us down memory lane, sorting through all the accumulated clutter has made the house seem so much larger, giving us room to add modern memories and memorabilia to our collection.
