EDUCATION Gelinas principal steps up to Ward Melville High School

Some junior high school graduates will see a familiar face among staff members at Ward Melville High School in September.

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School Principal William Bernhard will take on the role of high school principal when Alan Baum moves to the school district’s administrative office to start his new position as executive director of secondary curriculum and human resources in August.

Bernhard has been principal at Gelinas for four years and has worked for the Three Village Central School District for 21 years. Before becoming principal of the junior high school, Bernhard said he was a math teacher and mathematics chairman in Ward Melville. He also has lectured at Stony Brook University’s mathematics and applied math departments for more than two decades. His work at SBU earned him the State University of New York’s Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching for the academic year 2016–17.

The Stony Brook resident said he was excited when he heard he was going to be the new principal at Ward Melville.

“This is a truly wonderful community where the primary emphasis is on our kids,” Bernhard said. “I look forward to working with the school’s outstanding faculty.”

In his new role as high school principal, Bernhard said he hopes “to continue to strengthen the academic program of this historic institution.” To help him with these goals, Baum offered some advice.

“Ward Melville is a great institution filled with incredible students and amazing staff,” he said. “Be sure to include them in your decision-making process and never lose sight of your objective: To help provide a well-rounded, enriched educational experience for all students. Stay open-minded, be fair and, above all, enjoy this professional opportunity to grow.”

The Three Village school district is currently searching for a replacement for Bernhard. In his new role, the principal said he looks forward to seeing Gelinas students in the near future.

“I will be waiting for you at our wonderful high school to take on exciting new endeavors,” he said. “Keep the spirit of Gelinas alive by practicing kindness and wisdom.”

Tips for safe boating from the USCG Auxiliary

Boating Courses •U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary: Local flotillas offer a variety of safety classes, including basic/introductory boating courses and safety courses, navigation, sailing and personal watercraft safety, among others. The Port Jefferson Flotilla offers a range of boating safety courses.

•U.S. Power Squadron: Offers a wide range of boating courses.

•American Boat Operators’ Course: Offers online boating safety courses with online certification tests for a number of states.

Insurance companies recognize that a defensive driving course will make for better automobile drivers. So why not a defensive boating course for the New York State boating community? Perhaps marine insurance companies will give boaters a break in the same way that they discount premiums for drivers who take defensive automobile driving courses. The states of Florida and Kentucky already have such courses, which give the same benefits as defensive driving courses.

We all know that pleasure boating can be great fun, as well as dangerous. In many ways, boating is comparable to driving.

Both boats and cars require that the driver pay keen attention and have a strong sense of “situational awareness.” In both cases, we should be cognizant of our surroundings, and to other cars or other boats.

In fact, it can be argued that pedestrians for cars are analogous to paddle boaters for powerboat drivers. In boating as in driving there are “rules of the road,” the breaking of which can lead to vehicle damage and in the worst cases loss of life. We have airbags and personal floatation devices.

There are very high frequency radios for boats and cars have horns. Driving under the influence clearly applies to both driving cars and piloting boats: The practice is dangerous and the penalties can be severe.

It is becoming more common to read about high-speed boats crashing into other boats or breakwaters, where a driver is “boating under the influence.” Texting while driving is particularly dangerous, whether in a car going 30 mph or in a speed boat flying through the water at 30 mph.

But the analogy fails when we compare road maps to nautical charts. While road maps restrict us to clearly narrow paths of driving, charts for boats allow “freedom of expression” on the part of the boat driver.

On the other hand, there are limits for boaters as well, being greeted with signs indicating “no wake,” and on charts indicating

Defensive boaters generally adhere to “rules of the road” and International Maritime Organization’s COLREGs, or Conventions on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, established in 1972. These rules are very real regulations promulgated by the United States Coast Guard, which must be observed by both pleasure boaters and professional captains. These rules refer to collision avoidance regulations, which are considered to have legal basis just as automobile traffic laws determine right and wrong in courts of law. To obtain a captain’s license you must know these regula-

tions by heart; they are the traffic laws on the water, whether on a river, lake or at sea.

Boating accidents occur too commonly, making one wonder why licensing is not required of boaters. More recently, in fact, minimum operational documentation is required for boaters, whether using a stand-up paddle or piloting a 60-foot yacht. Courses do exist, and most states demand some knowledge of the nautical rules. A variety of organizations offer certified courses. For example, the USCG Auxiliary Port Jefferson Flotilla offers a range of study programs, including America’s Boating Course and Suddenly in Command, aimed at a passenger should the vessel operator become disabled.

•BoaterExam.com: Offers online boating safety courses with online certification tests for a number of states.

•Boatsafe: Offers an online Basic Boating Certification Course approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, and a Coastal Navigation Course.

•PWC Safety School: Offers online courses and certification for PWC operators in several states •State Courses: Many states offer boating safety courses. The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators’ online Directory provides contact information for state boating agencies.

New York State regulations to remember this boating season Effective May 1, 2014: All indviduals born on or after May 1, 1996, are now required to successfully complete an approved course in boater education in order to operate a motorboat. Approved courses include those offered by NYS Parks, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or the U.S. Power Squadron. Individuals less than 10 years of age may not take this course of instruction. Certain allowances to this law have been made for visitors to New York, persons renting a boat from a livery and persons purchasing a new boat for the first time.

Life jacket law for children under 12: Any youth under the age of 12 on boats 65 feet or less in length must wear securely fastened U.S. Coast Guard approved personal floatation device of appropriate size. It does not apply if the youth is in a

fully enclosed cabin.

Cold weather boaters — Personal floatation device laws: Anyone underway in a boat less than 21 feet in length anytime between Nov. 1 and May 1 must wear a securely fastened life jacket. This includes paddle boats and motorboats.

Personal watercraft operators must: •Wear a U.S. Coast Guard PFD. •Carry a U.S. Coast Guard approved visual distress signal.

•Carry a sound signaling device capable of a 2-second blast, audible at least 1/2 mile.

•Engine cutoff: if so equipped must be functional and attached to the rider.

Personal watercraft operators may not: •Operate a PWC under the age of 14.

•Operate in excess of 5 mph within 100 feet

of shore, a dock, float or anchored boat.

•Operate within 500 feet of a marked swim area.

•Operate between sunset and sunrise.

•Operate in a reckless manner and carrying more passengers than is recommend by the manufacturer.

Mandatory education requirements for PWC operators: New York requires that anyone operating a PWC complete an approved course in boating safety or otherwise be accompanied, on board, by someone 18 years of age or older who is the holder of an approved boating safety certificate. Certificates are required to be carried at all times when operating the personal watercraft.

Water skiing: On the navigable waters of NYS, any vessel towing a water skier,

parasail or other similar device must have on board, in addition to the operator, an observer who is specifically charged with watching out for the person towed. The observer must be at least 10 years of age.

Waterskiing and similar towed activities are limited to the hours between sunrise and sunset, provided that visibility is not reduced. Anyone towed by a vessel must wear a securely fastened U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD. This includes those on water skis, inner tubes, parasails, inflatable devices, to name a few. The preferred PFD for these activities is the type III specialpurpose device as it is impact rated, form fitting and generally affords better visibility for the skier. Remember the skier is considered a passenger and is to be counted against the maximum passengers allowed. Exceeding that number can be considered reckless operation.

A 48-year-old woman from Port Jefferson Station allegedly requested that another woman shoot and kill another witness in an ongoing criminal investigation March 24, according to police. She was arrested May 28 in Port Jefferson Station and charged with second-degree criminal solicitation.

At a home on Dayton Avenue in Port Jefferson Station May 27 at about 4 p.m., a 37-year-old undomiciled man allegedly entered the fenced-in storage yard and slept in a 1998 Nissan, according to police. He was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal trespassing.

Leaving the scene

Near the intersection of Route 25A and Ridgeway Avenue in East Setauket, a 50-year-old woman from East Setauket driving a 2016 Ford at about 6:30 p.m.

May 25 collided with a 2014 Honda, causing property damage, and allegedly fled the scene without exchanging contact information, according to police. She was arrested May 27 in Port Jefferson and charged with leaving the scene of a collision with property damage.

Driving with suspended license

A 39-year-old man from Mount Sinai was driving a 2004 Mazda on North County Road in Port Jefferson May 24 at about 8 p.m. near the intersection of Edgewood Avenue allegedly with a suspended license, according to police. He was arrested and charged with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, as his license had previously been suspended 26 times, police said.

Home Depot theft

At Home Depot on Middle Country Road in Selden, a 20-year-old man from Shirley allegedly placed several light sensors in a bucket and exited the store without paying at about 8 p.m. May 21, according to police. He was arrested May 28 in Selden and charged with petit larceny.

Power tools taken

On May 27 at about 5:30 p.m., a 44-yearold man from Coram allegedly stole assorted power tools from Home Depot on Middle Country Road in Selden, according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Clipped from a car

More than 100 makeup items, cash, a driver’s license and a debit card were stolen from within an unlocked 2015 Mazda parked on Crystal Brook Hollow Road in Terryville May 28 at about 11:30 a.m., according to police.

A 41-year-old man from Selden was allegedly driving a 2017 Nissan on Boyle Road in Selden May 26 at about 9:30 p.m. with a suspended license, according to police. He was arrested and charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

At about 1 p.m. May 24, a 19-year-old man from Coram allegedly possessed more than a half ounce of cocaine, digital scales and paraphernalia for packaging the drugs at a home on Homestead Drive in Coram, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of a narcotic drug, and criminal possession of drug paraphernalia.

Steal and sell

On April 28 at about 8 p.m., a 21-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, both from Medford, allegedly stole an iPhone 8 while selling other items at EZ Cash Pawn & Jewelry on Brentwood Road in Brentwood, then later sold it at GameStop in Selden, according to police. They were arrested May 24, and each charged with petit larceny.

Mailbox mischief

The mailbox of a home on Pine Hill Road in Port Jefferson was damaged using a firecracker at about 1:30 a.m. May 28, according to police.

Shirt stolen

A 23-year-old man from Centereach allegedly stole a T-shirt from Kohl’s on Nesconset Highway in East Setauket May 28 at about 2:30 p.m., according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Car break-in

A window on a 2016 Honda was broken and sunglasses were stolen from within while it was parked on Main Street in Port Jefferson at about 3:30 a.m. May 27, according to police.

Unknown purchases

Credit cards were stolen and later used from a home on West Broadway in Port Jefferson May 21, according to police. The issue was discovered, and a report was filed May 27.

In his annual State of the County address, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) touted recent initiatives while also keeping an eye on both the near and distant future. The executive spoke for more than an hour from the auditorium stage at Newfield High School in Selden in front of a crowd of county, town and village lawmakers, students and others.

“I can tell you that the state of Suffolk County — this amazing place that we all call home — is strong,” Bellone said. “I remain committed to making Suffolk County a model for effective and efficient government, a government that is as good as the people it is there to represent. We can build a stronger economic future, we can protect our water quality, we can transform this government, and we can do big things in Suffolk County and on Long Island if we do them together.”

Though he admitted the state of the county government, “remains a work in progress,” Bellone called on both political parties to look past the issues that divide them and remember the things that unite Americans. He honored the four Suffolk County native airmen of the 106th Rescue Wing, based out of Westhampton, who died as a result of a helicopter crash while carrying out a mission in Iraq in March,

“These are the individuals that make our country great,” Bellone said.

The executive spent a large chunk of his speech on public safety and the work of the Suffolk County Police Department, specifically a decreasing rate of opioid related overdoses and violent crime, and reported that last year 222 arrests were made in connection with the violent gang MS-13.

While discussing public safety, Bellone detailed the recently implemented SHARE initiative. The program — Shar-

ing to Help Access Remote Entry — allows participating school districts to connect closed circuit security camera systems directly to SCPD, who can access surveillance footage in real time in the event of active shooter situations on school campuses.

He gave a nod to the students locally and across the country organizing marches and walkouts to protest for stricter gun control laws in the wake of more high-casualty school shooting incidents around the U.S. “It has been inspiring to see young people speak out on issues, organize rallies, run for school boards and demand more of their elected officials,” he said.

“Your voices will be heard.”

The county executive made numerous references to the state of government and politics in Washington D.C., specifically in making a pledge that he and his colleagues “will not rest” until the State and Local Tax deduction, which was repealed as part of the federal tax overhaul bill passed in 2017, were restored. The elimination of the deduction stands to cost residents in high-property tax areas — like Suffolk County — thousands of dollars more than previous years.

Bellone stressed the importance of economic development through downtown revitalization projects — like upper Port Jefferson’s Uptown Funk plan — and streamlining public transportation around these hubs as a means to foster an environment in which young people can afford to live in Suffolk County going forward through the creation of quality jobs.

“We spend a lot of money educating our kids here,” the county executive said. “Too many of them have left for other parts of the country, where they are helping to power their regional economies. We have to stop that.”

Bellone called water quality a critical issue for all Suffolk County residents. The county has made funding available for septic system improvements for homeowners, which would help reduce the amount of nitrogen polluting Long Island’s waterways. He also recently implemented a recycling program for six county school districts.

LI State Veterans Home remembers fallen heroes GREGORY GUMA

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) gave the Memorial Day keynote address to veterans and residents of the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook May 25.

The event at the veterans home included a color guard, firing detail, taps memorial, wreath-laying ceremony and “tolling of the bells” memorial service.

After the event, Fred Sganga, executive director of the Long Island State Veterans Home, remarked on the importance of honoring veterans both past and present.

“As we remember those service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country this Memorial Day, we must renew our pledge to always support our current and former service members,” he said. “For the past twenty-six years, the Long Island State Veterans Home has had the honor and privilege to have cared for over 10,000 brave men and women who risked their lives to protect our freedoms.

We are humbled to have served ‘America’s Heroes’ in their greatest time of need.”

Residents continue to protest proposed cellphone tower Residents who live near an open space on the border of Old Field and Setauket have noticed something new popping up, and it’s not flowers.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, signs appeared in front of houses in the vicinity of Kaltenborn Commons, a small park located at the intersection of Old Field Road and Quaker Path, protesting a cellphone tower proposed for the location by the Village of Old Field.

The signs read: “Save Kaltenborn Commons, say no to cell tower and equipment corral.”

Charles Catania, who lives across from the commons, said he wasn’t sure who put the signs up, but he didn’t mind that there was one in front of his house.

“I think they should be all around,” he said. “I’m in favor of seeing the signs because I don’t think most people are really aware — even to this date — I don’t think most people are aware of what’s going on.”

Old Field and Setauket residents who live near the commons attended multiple Old Field village meetings this year to express their concerns over the installation of a cellphone tower in the open space. Many have cited concerns about the aesthetics of the tower, a potential decrease in real estate values and possible negative health effects.

Catania said he and his wife, Kathleen,

attended the meetings in order to understand why the village trustees would want to install a tower at the location that he said many children play in and residents bring their miniature horses to. While the couple had planned to add an extension to their home, he said the plans are on hold until they find out if a tower will be erected or not.

“It’s a blight on this park,” Catania said.

“I just can’t imagine that as a gateway to Old Field or anywhere, that they would want this kind of a structure on this park.”

Former board member John Von Lintig, who lives directly across from the park, presented a petition to the trustees Feb. 13 signed by 100 residents who were against the installation of the cell tower.

“The opposition of the cellphone tower, or pole as you call it, is primarily based on aesthetic reasons, which tie very closely to the impact on real estate immediately in the vicinity of the tower,” Von Lintig said at the February meeting.

After the appearance of the signs, Von Lintig said in an email that he found that opposition to the tower has grown stronger.

While a vote to approve signing a lease with telecommunications tower site developer Elite Towers LP was tabled in February until new trustees were voted in, no vote has been taken since Bruce Feller and Tom Pirro were sworn in this April. Mayor Michael Levine said the vote could possibly take place at the June

Tanya Negron, founder of Elite Towers, said at a Jan. 9 meeting that the proposed tower would have a 50-by-50-foot footprint.

A stealth concealment pole, the slim structure will have cellphone carrier antennae inside, and the only antennae that would be outside are for emergency agencies, such as the fire department, if requested. Negron said no trees will be removed, and the pole will be centralized within the property and

set back from the road 132 feet on the west, 130 feet on the east and 160 feet to the south.

Catania said he hopes trustees will sit in the park to understand its beauty before voting.

“Think of what Old Field stands for,” he said. “Think about what you’re always defending in Old Field with regard to it being such a beautiful village and maintaining that character of a village. And think of the families that are surrounding the park and how this cell tower can impact everyone in Old Field.”

SWR schools introduce anonymous reporting app Shoreham-Wading River school district is asking students and staff to become the eyes and ears of the school with the introduction of the anonymous Report It app as part of the district’s increasing focus on school security.

“Last fall we started to look at different ways that students could report any safety or security issues they may have where they weren’t comfortable reporting in a regular venue,” Superintendent Gerard Poole said. “This was an anonymous way to let us know if there was something they know or to give us some advance notice of something that may be emerging.”

The Report It app allows students, teachers, staff or community members who access the website or download the app to anonymously report on any activity they think is suspicious to the school, whether its security or drugs related or even involving social media and cyberbullying.

Alan Meinster, the assistant superinten-

dent for curriculum, instruction and assessment said at a recent board of education meeting each of the four district principals and administration will rceive the tips and are responsible for checking up on any reports. The information in the report will then be monitored by the district main office.

“There are protocols they have to do involving investigating any information that is received — all the principals will always follow the standard protocol, and part of that protocol is consulting with district administration,” Meinster said at the meeting.

The reports are monitored during regular school hours.

The app has been active in the district for approximately a month, but Poole said the district has yet to see any reports that have required action. Though Poole admitted that since reporting is anonymous there is potential for false reports, he believes students and staff understand the purpose and gravity of what this app means for the school.

Poole said that the school is not liable if they do not take action on any specific report.

The app is part of the district’s See It, Say It, Report It campaign to get students and staff active in being mindful of school safety. The app joins other security features that the district has implemented this year such as a visitor management system in all district buildings that scans licenses and prints out a tag with a person’s destination and photo. The district has also hired two more security guards for large gatherings as well as arrival and dismissal during the school day.

The district is planning to implement more security features over the summer.

Poole said the goal is for students to come back next year to new security vestibules and a student ID swipe-in system at the high school and Albert G. Prodell Middle School. The security features will be built with funds from the ongoing bond project.

Anthony Lavalle, executive director of Sayville-based Report It Inc., said that the app was designed for use in today’s technological age.

“If you are going to encourage a student to come forward, which is not an

easy thing to do, you have to provide mechanisms that are conducive to the culture,” Lavalle said. “Even today if you think about it — a school shooting in Texas, school shooting in Florida — the concept is that students potentially know about these types of things, but they do not communicate them because of fear of some sort of retribution or retaliation.”

After the Feb. 14 Parkland, Florida, shooting, Lavalle said he’s seen a lot more interest from local schools in Report It as a means of enhancing security. A number of school districts on Long Island, including Half Hollow Hills, Plainedge, Lynbrook, Port Washington and Malverne have also signed on to using the app.

The application is web-based, but there is also an option for users to download it to their phone. Each school building’s web page has a link that sends it to that specific building’s Report It page.

If logging into the app from the website, users will have to input five digits for reporting for Shoreham-Wading River schools. The code starts with “SWR,” with the last two letters being the school the user is sending it to, which are “HS” for the high school, “MS” for Prodell Middle School, “MA” for Miller Avenue Elementary and “WR” for Wading River Elementary School.

School officials urge that if the report is an emergency, to immediately call 911 or contact emergency services.

Stellar year

The Stony Brook School held its 96th commencement exercises May 26. The program consisted of speeches by valedictorian Christina Manzo, of Manorville, and co-salutatorians Miranda Harrigan, of Ronkonkoma, and Joo Hee (Joy) Lee, of Seoul, Korea. All three young women were inducted into the Cum Laude Chapter at The Stony Brook School for their outstanding scholarship and citizenship. The Cum Laude Chapter at SBS is in its 89th year of existence, and 13 seniors were inducted this year.

The SBS Class of 2018 included 67 graduates who represent five states within the United States, as well as numerous countries including Canada, China, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Nigeria, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United

Kingdom. Ramez Shehadi, an international business consultant and member of the SBS class of 1990, delivered the commencement address. Kimberly Thornbury, vice president of strategic planning at The King’s College and current SBS parent, delivered the baccalaureate sermon on May 25.

Christina Manzo

Valedictorian Manzo has attended The Stony Brook School since seventh grade. In addition to her leadership role as class president, she has been a member of the chamber singers and concert choir, contributing editor of the yearbook and lettered member of the girls varsity

tennis team. She participated at SBS as a mentor/tutor, and outside of school volunteered at a refugee camp in Thailand. In the fall, Manzo will attend Columbia University in New York City.

Miranda Harrigan

Co-salutatorian Harrigan has attended The Stony Brook School since seventh grade.

She has served as the academic prefect, on the honor council and was a member of the mock trial team. She has led the girls cross country team and the girls track team as captain. Off campus, Harrington contributed as a teen advisory board member at Connetquot

Public Library. She will attend Hamilton College in the fall.

Joo Hee (Joy) Lee

Co-salutatorian Lee has attended The Stony Brook School since eighth grade. She was co-president of the science club and a member of the robotics team in addition to playing the oboe in the school orchestra. Lee presented her project on cancer treatment at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in New York City and also volunteered internationally at Nepal Medical Project. She will attend Johns Hopkins University in the fall.

Ward Melville High School senior and member of the school’s InSTAR science research program Kathleen Esfahany has been nominated by the Long Island Science Congress to attend the NY State Science Congress at the University of Buffalo in June.

Esfahany was selected for this honor based on her research work on the “Organization of neural population code in mouse visual system.” She has dedicated much of her research to this field and was recently featured in a video created by the Allen Institute, a global leader in neuroscience research. She will be heading to Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall, where she plans to continue to study the field of science.

Each year, the Council of Administrators and Supervisors recognizes a number of highly skilled school administrators from Nassau and Suffolk counties with an administrator of the year award. CAS represents more than 1,400 administrators in 77 school districts across Long Island.

Marilyn Simonson Berg, of Setauket, died May 26 at the age of 85.

Born and raised in Medina, North Dakota, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Dakota and worked for a time at General Mills in Minneapolis, Minnesota, before marrying Darrel E. Berg and retiring to raise her two sons Mitchell G. Berg of Houston, Texas, and James E. Berg of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

After the children were out of the nest, she worked for a bit in real estate and traveled the world. At home, she was a longtime member of The Old Field Club where she played tennis and a lot of bridge, but

most of all, she enjoyed spending summer times at the cabana beach with friends and her loving family. She also maintained close relationships with many of her Delta Gamma sisters from UND. She was a beautiful woman with a lovely coloratura voice, warm smile, quick wit and a grand sense of humor. She will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of her company and companionship.

She is survived by her sons Mitch and Jamie; grandchildren Shannon, Tanner, Carson, Julieann, Michael and Justin; and Dave P. Sipperly, her partner for the last 17 years of her life.

A memorial service was held at Bryant Funeral Home in East Setauket at 11 a.m.

Three Village residents honor fallen soldiers

BY RITA J. EGAN Hundreds lined the streets of East Setauket to catch the annual Memorial Day Parade sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars East Setauket Post 3054 May 28.

After an opening ceremony at the Old Village Green, participants marched along Main Street and Route 25A. Marchers included members of local VFW posts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the Setauket, Stony Brook and Port Jefferson fire departments.

Ward Melville High School and R.C. Murphy Junior High School bands played, and elected officials including U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley), state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket), county Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) and Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (DPort Jefferson Station) joined the holiday remembrance.

At the conclusion of the parade a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the East Setauket memorial park on 25A.

Combating bias-based bullying TBR NEWS MEDIA

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) admitted in his 2018 State of the County address last week that our county, our home, remains a constant work in progress. We couldn’t agree more. There needs to be action taken to push for more concrete progress now, instead of just talking about the potential Suffolk has.

Many of the quality-of-life issues addressed by Bellone are no surprise to Long Islanders. The high cost of living and economic stress it creates, need for affordable housing, improvements to public transportation to reduce traffic, and tackling our county’s narcotic drug abuse and gang violence are daily issues we struggle with. And these aren’t new problems.

Bellone first recognized that “young people have been leaving our region at record rates for 20 years in search of opportunity and in search of a place to live other than their parents basements” in his 2012 State of the County address. Enrollment in most of the county’s school districts is dwindling as families are moving off Long Island to pursue their version of the American Dream.

The true question is how much progress has been made toward meeting housing demands, creating opportunities for better-paying jobs, improving the Long Island Rail Road and other public transportation while addressing crime in the last six years?

A Connect Long Island master plan to construct new transitoriented housing centers was presented by Bellone in 2015. While we’ve seen ground broken on Port Jefferson’s Uptown Funk project, key plans like the Ronkonkoma hub, Huntington Station’s revitalization, Heartland Town Square in Brentwood off Commack Road and other promised projects are either just getting underway or largely still lofty ideals sketched on paper.

Residents have spoken out against many of these planned housing developments in rallies at town halls and roadway intersections.

Location is key, and we are tired of seeing open green space slated for development when there’s plenty of vacant storefronts and zombie houses in residential areas.

Let’s not forget the affordable aspect. Recently opened housing projects in Huntington Station are quoting a rent of more than $2,300 a month for a one-bedroom apartment, when the median income for Suffolk workers is about $41,000 a year, according to the U.S. Census 2012-2016 American Community Survey. That’s not far off from apartment costs in parts of New York City, which don’t require a commute.

Electrification of the LIRR’s eastern tracks – including the Huntington to Port Jefferson stretch – has been talked about by the county since 2015. As of this April, town leaders including Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R), Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R) and Town of Huntington Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) are still writing letters to state and county officials begging for a feasibility study to be started. As for the promise of a rapid transit bus system, a reliable system has still not materialized while many of the line stops have been closed.

High-paying jobs that offer opportunity for future growth, reasonably priced housing and solutions to roadway gridlock need to be put into place to make Suffolk County’s future bright, as Bellone first promised when taking office.

We are willing to commend what appears to be progress in reducing narcotic drug abuse and gang violence, as early crime stats for 2018 are trending in the right direction. But we must remain vigilant.

In September 2010, the Dignity for All Students Act was signed into state law to combat bias-based bullying, discrimination and harassment in public schools and to ensure the right of every public school student to learn in a safe, welcoming and caring environment.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES, the Suffolk County Inter-Faith AntiBias Task Force and the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association joined together and have been working in collaboration to ensure the guidelines and goals established by DASA are being effectively implemented in public schools throughout Suffolk County.

One of their joint initiatives was to facilitate a forum, which coincided with the fifth anniversary of the introduction of DASA, where county school districts’ Dignity Act coordinators and district DASA coordinators could share their best practices in the areas of disseminating information to staff, students and parents; the training of staff and students; prevention and response to events; and response to violations.

Through an open dialogue, forum attendees shared and received valuable insight into effective practices, and the tools to enhance

their own processes.

While there is much good work going on in schools across the county in compliance with DASA, there is always more that can be done and shared. As an outgrowth of this successful forum, a DASA resource guide, which is a compilation of best practices utilized in county public schools for the past five years, was created. This comprehensive resource guide, which is being shared with all county school districts, will serve as an informative and valuable tool to support and enhance the work being done to implement DASA and protect the rights of all children

attending public schools.

The guide is a collaboration between the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission, the Suffolk County Inter-Faith Anti-Bias Task Force, Eastern Suffolk BOCES and the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association.

How do we even begin a conversation Last year I wrote a quick letter to this paper stating my observation of various bumper stickers on Hillary and Trump supporters’ vehicles. All of Hillary’s had a similar grouping theme as did Trump’s.

Throughout this year of extreme turmoil, I have now noticed the theme of stickers on vehicles who support the current administration have become even more offensive. At last writing, one of the most offensive stickers on a Trump supporter’s car was “my kid banged your kid’s honor teacher.”

I took a picture May 17 of a pickup truck completely adorned with bumper stickers including a large sticker in support of Trump.

Here is the rundown: “You can give peace a chance but I’ll cover you if it doesn’t work out” (with a picture of an assault rifle); “F**K off” written in a map of America; “Deplorable;” “Black

rifles matter;” “Infidel” (with an assault rifle representing the “I”); “So if guns kill people, cars drive drunk and spoons make people fat;” “We don’t need gun control, we need idiot control;” “The Founding Fathers would be shooting right now;” “Silly Americans, laws are for poor people;” “Kennedy put a man on the moon, Obama put a man in the ladies room;” “We the People have spoken.” The last is the most frightening of them all.

Some questions: How is one, on the opposing side of this person, even to begin having a political conversation with him?

Why is this person so full of hatred for so many people? How did we, as a country, come to have a president who represents this hatred? How can people be so comfortable, even proud, plastering their vehicles with such derogatory and disgusting rhetoric?

now proudly calling himself a deplorable. Good. We can agree on that. He is calling people with my mindset about gun control “idiots.” What if he drives by or confronts a family in a parking lot that has lost a loved one in a shooting incident. Would he call them “idiots” to their face?

How does he explain the “F-off” one to children? Why are the abhorrent and repulsive bumper stickers only on Trump’s side?

So, for people who are still supporting this president, this truck is what you represent to those of us who are trying desperately to keep this country from falling into the abyss.

And yes, I find this blatant show of racist, misogynistic, threatening, uneducated myopic view of humanity, absolutely deplorable.

Dropping the emotional masks for a weekend

rom the time we’re teenagers, we’re taught to control our emotions. As we get older, people tell us not to make emotional decisions.

We see our emotions, particularly the ones in the moment, as being at odds with the rational decision-making side of our thought processes.

We roll our eyes and shake our heads when a teenager makes decisions or declarations that seem driven more by the hormones surging through their growing bodies than by the intellect we hope they’ve

And yet, every so often, we and our teenagers take those raw emotions out for a few hours or even days.

This past weekend, my wife and

I did our periodic Texas two-step, where she brought our son to his baseball game in one state and I drove hundreds of miles to our daughter’s volleyball tournament in another.

The journey involves considerable effort, finding food that doesn’t upset allergies or sensitive stomachs at a time when indigestion or a poorly timed pit stop could derail the day.

The games themselves are filled with a wide range of emotions, as a player’s confidence and ability can rise and fall quickly from one point to the next, with slumping shoulders quickly replaced by ecstatic high fives.

In the stands and outside the lines, the emotional echoes continue to reverberate.

One girl sat next to her father, sobbing uncontrollably with her ankle high on the chair in front of her. Her father put his arm around her shoulders and spoke quiet, encouraging words into her ear. Her coach came over, in front of a stand filled with strangers, and said the girl would be able to play the next day as

soon as the swelling in her ankle went down — the coach didn’t want to risk further injury. The girl nodded that she heard her coach, but couldn’t stop the torrent of tears.

Not far from her, a mother seethed as her daughter missed a shot. The mother was angry, defensive and, eventually, apologetic to the parents of the other players for her daughter’s performance. Other parents assured her that it was fine and that everyone could see her daughter was trying her best.

Another parent hooted and hollered, clapping long after the point ended, as her daughter rose above her diminutive frame to hit the ball around a group of much taller girls.

Many of the emotional moments included unbridled joy, as a group of girls continued to embrace each other after winning a tough match, replaying point after point and laughing about the time the ball hit them in the head or they collided with a teammate on the floor.

What will they remember next

week, next month or in 20 years? Will it be satisfying when they find a picture of a younger version of themselves, beaming from ear to ear with girls they may not have seen for many years?

Even if they do think about one particular point or a strategic decision that paid off in a game against talented competition, they will also remember where and how they expressed those raw, dramatic emotions.

While feelings can get in the way of whatever grand plan we’re executing in our head, holding us back from taking a risk or preventing us from showing how much we care, they can and do enhance the way we experience our lives. Despite all the work driving behind slow-moving vehicles which take wide right turns and encourage you to call a number to let someone know how they’re driving, the effort — even when the event doesn’t turn out as well as we might hope — is well worth the opportunity to drop the mask and indulge those emotions.

Dumbing down America as graduation approaches

ccording to what I recently read, over half of the high schools in the United States are doing away with recognition of the highest achieving students. They are no longer naming valedictorians and salutatorians at graduation. I find that shocking.

No, I was neither valedictorian nor salutatorian at my high school graduation, so that is not the cause of my disappointment at this latest piece of participation trophy news.

No one is hurt if there is no “best.” Everyone feels good about

Shouldn’t they be regarded as role models? They will often go on to be the leaders of our country at the end of the day.

Class ranking is also being abandoned.

This is just another example of dumbing down America. In our vast and rich continent, our most valuable resources are the education and knowledge, along with the drive and motivation of our population. When we declare that all men (insert “persons”) are created equal, we mean we have equal rights to excel and should be given every opportunity and encouragement to do so.

I did graduate from a highly competitive high school. I had to pass a test to get in, and I had to pass innumerable tests over the years to stay in. We all moaned about how competitive the school was. Our final grades were posted on the main hallway walls at the end of each semester, along with our rank in our class. “So terrible,” we said, “so unhealthy.” But you know what? I

worked harder, studied longer, learned more, because I wanted to see my name higher up on those lists.

Englishman Roger Bannister didn’t break the 4-minute mile alone in 1954 at an Oxford University track. He did it because there were two other runners in the race, Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher, who challenged him for the lead. The competition spurred Bannister to give his best and then some. And when he did break the long-standing barrier, the magic 4-minute figure, he thanked his pacemakers, Chataway and Brasher.

Some disagree that winning a prize or trophy of some sort is what we should be encouraging. They say instead we should inspire an internal desire for learning and self-betterment.

But if both work together, an external reward system and an internal drive, we have the best combination for success. Take away the external and the fizz goes out of the drink.

We can teach students how to make competition work for them, rather than tell students that competition is bad.

Competitors make worthy colleagues.

Sometimes they make best friends.

Part of what we supposedly teach in schools is preparation for what we call “the real world.” Now everything about our world is competitive: What school we get into, which college we attend, what job we will be able to beat out the competition for, which of us will get promoted, get pay raises, even who we will marry. Heck, will the hometown team win the ballgame tonight?

Now some people refuse to play the competitive game, and that’s all right too. They get jobs that pay them enough to get by, they don’t aspire to the conspicuous consumption of much of our society, and they live solid lives with perhaps relatively less stress. Not everyone wants to be a record-breaking athlete. Just getting by is enough.

They have the right to the pursuit of happiness according to their own wishes. But sooner or later they have to compete for something — or someone. It is the way of the world, and it is a skill that can be learned without damaging our students. The consolation to not being the best is that everyone is special in some way, not that everyone is equal because they all showed up.

Dylan Pallonetti’s nine goals send Patriots to Class A county final

BY BILL LANDON A strong dose of Dylan Pallonetti is just what the doctor ordered.

With his No. 1-seed Ward Melville boys lacrosse team down 2-0 in the first quarter, the junior scored three straight for a lead his Patriots would not let go of, and capped off the game with another three to seal the deal in a 14-8 Class A semifinal win over No. 5 Connetquot May 24.

Pallonetti ended with a game-high nine goals and one assist on the evening at Islip High School.

“We came out a little slow, but we started moving the ball well in the second half when we figured out their zone,” Pallonetti said.

“And we scored some goals.”

He said his team will take the momentum built in this game and transfer it on to the next.

Ward Melville faces No. 3 Half Hollow Hills East at Islip High School in the Class A title game May 30, but results were not available by press time.

“We’ll have a couple days of practice,” Pallonetti said. “We’ll practice hard, go hard and just keep going.”

Ward Melville head coach Jay Negus said the team didn’t change its game plan when facing the Thunderbirds and would treat Wednesday’s game the same way.

“We were a little impatient at first, but we came back to our game plan,” Negus said, noting playmakers on the field, especially on the

defensive end, that made some of Pallonetti’s goals possible. “Ethan Larson, Frank Ciniglio, Alex Mazzone and Collin Krieg played well and Patty O’Neill made some unbelievable takeaways that sparked some transition goals.”

Seniors Matt Grillo (two goal, two assists), Zach Hobbes (two goals) and Lucas Flynn (one goal) also found the back of cage for Ward Melville. Senior Ryan Pallonetti, Dylan’s older brother, added an assist.

Ward Melville (17-1 overall, 13-1 Division I) will look to avenge its only loss of the season.

The Patriots fell to Hills East, 7-6, even after scoring three straight goals with 55 seconds left to close what was a 7-3 gap. Ward Melville is vying for its third straight county crown.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us against Hills East,” Negus said. “So we’re going to dig in the next couple of days and be prepared.”
