EDUCATION 3V to vote on $209.8M budget, trustees run unopposed foreign languages at the high school, a new position that oversees it and English as a New Language is being created districtwide for kindergarten through 12th grade.

Similarly, the retirement of the assistant director of health and physical education, who oversaw high school programs, will result in a coordinating chair of physical education and health for elementary grades and one for all secondary grades. The district will not replace the administrator retiring from the child nutrition program, Pedisich said.

In other changes, Ward Melville High School principal, Alan Baum, will move to the North Country administrative building to become executive director of Secondary Curriculum and Human Resources. William Bernhard, principal at P.J. Gelinas Junior High, will become the high school principal.

A main point is that the district will stay within the 1.97 percent cap on the tax levy increase without the need to cut programs, Jeff Carlson, the district’s superintendent for business services, told those gathered for the Wednesday meeting.

Highlights of the $209.8 million budget include measures to increase student safety and well-being and to support elementary science and music programs.

Cheryl Pedisich, district superintendent, said the district will hire an additional guidance counselor at Ward Melville High School, as well as a psychologist to administer tests throughout the district to “free up” school psychologists to offer more counseling and guidance. She said security is multifaceted.

“It’s not just infrastructure and security staff,” she said. “It’s also clinical staff.”

Three Village will receive $34.4 million — an increase of $833,579 — in aid from the state, Carlson said. It does not include building aid, which is tied to capital projects that vary from year to year.

The administrators said that declining enrollment at the elementary level, secondary student course preferences, retirements and administrative restructuring, all serve to ease the path for program enhancements.

A decrease of 120 to 130 elementaryage students could mean a reduction of two full-time equivalent positions in the early grades. Pedisich said that would enable the district to add three teaching assistants to two from existing staffing as it prepares for the

2020 implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. Lower student numbers also mean that the district can offer third-grade orchestra in the fall.

At the secondary level, changes in course enrollment could lead to a decrease of two to three FTEs, said Pedisich. As a result, the upcoming budget will be able to support an assistant athletic trainer to provide coverage for junior varsity games and seventh- and eighth-grade contact sports, as well as the addition of one full-time equivalent clerical staff member. Each junior high will have its own assistant to support the media specialists with the rollout of the one-

to-one device program that equips sevenththrough ninth-graders with Chromebooks, the superintendent said.

Additional positions include one FTE for maintenance and shifting the transition coordinator, who assists special needs students in their move to the next stage after high school, from a contract position to one that is in-house.

Administrative retirements offer the district an opportunity to save funds by combining positions, while also being more “effective in terms of the delivery of curriculum,” Pedisich said.

Besides the budget, residents will also vote for school board trustees. School board president William Connors and trustee Deanna Bavlnka are running unopposed to hold their seats.

Connors, the father of three Ward Melville High School graduates, is running for his third term since being elected in 2012. He previously served on the board from 1994-2006 and said during a recent interview that his time on the board has taught him that the community will support a “reasonable” budget, sometimes at “great financial sacrifice.”

“We have excellent programs and services, and the community has supported us in those efforts,” said Connors, who retired from his position as associate vice president of academic affairs and college dean of faculty at Suffolk Community College in 2011.

Both Cassidy and Fezza said most people go into police work to help others, and it doesn’t get better than saving someone’s life.

“It’s definitely rewarding when you’re able to locate a subject and prevent them from actually killing themselves,” Cassidy said.

Once the victim was rescued, he was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation.

Incidents and arrests May 1–7 Unlicensed driver

A 42-year-old man from Centereach was driving a 2001 Ford on Tree Road in Centereach May 6 at about 4 p.m. when during a traffic stop, police discovered he was allegedly knowingly driving with a suspended license, according to police.

He was arrested and charged with thirddegree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Broken headlight

At a home on Hawthorne Road in Rocky Point May 6, a 70-year-old man from Rocky Point allegedly broke a headlight on a 2014 Dodge, according to police. He was arrested and charged with criminal mischief.

Crime crackdown

On May 3, a 41-year-old man from Selden was arrested in connection with several alleged crimes, according to police. At about 9 p.m.

April 29, he allegedly kicked in a garage window at Pep Boys on Middle Country Road in Lake Grove and stole equipment from within, according to police. On April 16 he allegedly broke into a work trailer on New Moriches Road in Lake Grove and stole tools, police said. He allegedly stole assorted property from a home on Waverly Avenue in Holtsville March 30, according to police. On April 5, police said he allegedly presented a check as payment knowing it was forged at TD Bank on Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson.

He also allegedly presented a forged check at Frank & Ross Payroll Services in Centereach April 6, police said. Police said he allegedly stole two jackhammers, a Honda engine, a WiFi transmitter and a digital thermometer from a home on Grant Street in Port Jefferson Station April 24. At the time of his arrest, police said he was also allegedly in possession of testosterone and prescription pills without a prescription. He was arrested in Selden and charged with second- and third-degree burglary, fourth-degree grand larceny, two counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument, three counts of petit larceny and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Phone missing

A customer at Portside Bar & Grill on Main Street in Port Jefferson left a cellphone behind at about 3 a.m. May 4, and when they returned to retrieve it, it was gone, according to police.

Fraudulent car purchase

A 44-year-old man from the Bronx allegedly purchased a 2016 Toyota from Huntington Toyota on East Jericho Turnpike Nov. 17, 2017, using someone else’s name, address, social security number and other identifying information necessary to obtain a loan and complete the purchase, according to police. He was arrested May 7 at the 6th Precinct in Selden and charged with second-degree grand larceny, first-degree identity theft, second-degree forgery and third-degree possession of personal identification.

Yard theft

On May 7 at about 11:30 a.m., a thatcher was stolen from the yard of a home on Clinton Avenue in Terryville, according to police.

Taking from Target

At about 10:30 p.m. May 6, an electric razor was stolen from Target on Pond Path in South Setauket, according to police.

At the same time and location, assorted food items and a men’s watch were also reported stolen as a separate incident, police said.

Mirror damage

The driver’s side mirror of a 2017 Toyota parked on the road in front of a home on Woodhull Avenue in Port Jefferson Station was damaged at about 3 a.m. May 4, according to police.

Motorcycle damaged

A 2004 Honda motorcycle parked in the driveway of a home on William Street in Port Jefferson Station was damaged at about 6 p.m. May 1, according to police.

Car stolen

On May 6 at about 9:30 p.m., a 2009 Toyota was stolen from the driveway of a home on Mount Sinai-Coram Road in Coram, according to police.

Tools taken

Landscaping equipment was stolen from within an open garage at a home on Richmond Boulevard in Centereach May 4 at about 5 p.m., according to police.

The next step, he said, is adding more vocational courses to address the needs of students whose next stop may not be college.

Connors said he takes his board president role seriously.

“I try to present a public voice of the board,” he said. “I try to represent the board of education and what we stand for and advocate for the district.”

Fellow trustee and Ward Melville graduate Bavlnka also is proud of the district’s free prekindergarten program offered at Nassakeag Elementary School.

Director of human resources at P.W. Grosser Consulting, Bavlnka listed among the district’s recent accomplish-

ments the elementary STEM program, establishment of writing and math centers at the secondary schools and the one-to-one device program currently in its first year at the district’s junior highs.

Bavlnka was elected for the first time in 2011 and, like Connors, notes the challenge of sustaining quality programs while remaining fiscally responsible.

Local authors and booklovers had the chance to chat face to face.

On May 6, the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library hosted a reception and book signing where nearly 100 attendees had the chance to meet with local authors. The event kicked off with mingling in the Periodical Reading Room and an hour of music provided by Ward Melville High School students Emily Yang, Lawrence Lan, Dara Berman and Preeti Kota. It was followed by chatting and refreshments with the authors in the Vincent R. O’Leary Community Room.

In attendance were 28 authors including Gina Ardito, Roger Armbruster, Cynthia Blair/Cynthia Baxter, David Bouchier, Malcolm Bowman, Carmen Bugan, Susan Davis, Paul Jay Edelson, Yassin El-Ayouty, Annika Eriksson, Gus Franza/August Franza, John Edward Gill, Susan Pierce Grossman, Jaclyn Gutleber, David Hicks, June Capossela Kempf, Christine Murdock, Philip F. TOWN Frankie’s Freezer provides pops to soothe cancer patients

For the young cancer patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, one of the worst side effects from chemotherapy, beyond the pain and the nausea, is mouth sores.

The best way to soothe the pain, according o 12-year-old cancer survivor Delaney Unger, is with ice pops.

“When I had mouth sores, I had to tell my dad right away, because I knew they would get worse if I didn’t treat them right,” Delaney said. “Sometimes using other stuff would make [the pain] worse, so I would usually eat ice pops.”

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital announced Thursday it would be taking part in the nonprofit American Childhood Cancer Organization’s Take a Pop, Share a Smile campaign that donates a lifetime supply of freezer pops to hospitals for its cancer patients. The hospital will receive a total of 2,000 ice pops to start, and the ACCO will keep the freezer consistently stocked every year.

To hold the new bounty of ice pops is a new freezer named Frankie’s Freezer, which was dedicated in memory of Francis “Frankie” Antonawich, a 25-year-old who died in February from Hodgkin lymphoma before he could realize his dream of becoming a pediatric oncology nurse.

“I think he would have been thrilled about this, because he really loved kids,” Antonawich’s mother and assistant director of nursing at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Lynn Antonawich, said. “He not only felt that he could help a child, but also the parents of those children who would feel helpless.”

His father, Frank Antonawich, told an audience of Girl Scouts and families at a press conference May 3, trying to hold back tears, that the disease never stopped his son.

“Frank was a very active young man — it never stopped him going to work, going to the gym — he even continued to volunteer as a wrestling coach at his alma mater, St. John the Baptist Parish,” he said.

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital pediatric nurse specialist Lisa Rendina, who had worked with the family before and during Frankie Antonawich’s treatment, decided she wanted to get involved and contacted the ACCO, which donated the freezer too.

“As a mother, my heart broke for Lynn, and I wanted to do something to honor Frankie,” she said. “We just wanted to

Rendina is the leader of Girl Scout Troop 105. Her troop, along with other members from Girl Scouts Service Unit 45 from Centereach, attended the unveiling. Scouts wrote inspirational phrases all over the freezer like “No one fights alone” and “The one who falls and gets up is so much stronger than the one who never fell.”

The event also honored three cancer survivors from Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, including Delaney, 12-year-old Erin Ersoy and 10-year-old Aubri Krauss, all of whom are Girl Scouts from Centereach.

The parents of the three girls agreed that ice pops were one of the simplest ways to deal with the mouth sores, while also aiding in hydration and nutrition.

“I remember what happened with my daughter and mouth sores, it was terrible,”

said Delaney’s father Berk Unger of his daughter who finished her final treatment last August. “Ice pops were the only thing that helped.”

Lynn Antonawich said her son was in such severe pain following a stem cell transplant that he couldn’t eat.

“They were thinking of tube feeding him,” she said. “And he was a 24-year-old man. I couldn’t imagine what the pain must be like for a kid.”

Those who work in the children’s hospital said one of the most important things young patients need is to feel like their lived are as normal as possible.

“Anything helps,” Lynn Antonawich said.

“From donations of gifts, such as iPads and game systems, they are able to take part in a more normal life like they would at home.”

The Village Times Herald is asking teachers in the Three Village Central School District to submit creative work from their students.

The June 7 edition of the paper will include a pull-out section called Pens & Pencils featuring selections of art, prose and poetry provided by the elementary, junior high schools and high school in the Three Village school district.

In the past, we have relied on the English and art departments of the schools to select and forward those art and writing projects they feel are worthy of inclusion.

We try to include — space permitting — as many representative samples as possible from grades K through 12.

Please understand that we have always received more submissions than would fit in the available space, so please make no promises to any students that their work will be included in the supplement. We will do our best to publish the remaining submissions in the Arts & Lifestyles section of the TBR newspapers throughout the summer.

The Jazz Loft set to offer sensory-friendly program

For some, a musical performance can become a nuisance or even a nightmare with loud noises and bright lights.

It’s a problem the board of The Jazz Loft in Stony Brook village understand.

Tom Manuel, president and founder of the venue, said since its opening two years ago, the board has wanted to do something to serve the community. Manuel said the board will achieve that goal May 19 when The Jazz Loft presents a sensory-friendly performance geared toward those with autism and special needs. He said the production will kick off future sensory-friendly workshops and more performances.

The venue will be able to achieve its goal due to a $5,000 donation from The Ann Schermerhorn Foundation, a nonprofit established after the death of its namesake.

When CNTs are produced, they have differing structures, which is referred to as chirality. The different chiralities absorb different wavelengths of light. The multiwalled CNTs used would have chiralities specifically tuned to absorb the different wavelengths of sunlight resulting in a highly efficient solar cell.

Blankets of kindness

Nassakeag Elementary School’s student council used their creativity and compassion to create 20 blankets for the Stony Brook Children’s Hospital this winter.

During several council meetings, members worked on making the blankets from fleece. They cut and knotted the ends to create fringe, and a few members sewed the edge. Many worked in small groups and created more than one blanket per group.

Jefferson’s Ferry Life Plan Community’s wellness nurse Joanne Lehmann has been promoted to health and wellness program manager, a new position at Jefferson’s Ferry. Her promotion is reflective of her outstanding work coupled with the Life Plan community’s strong commitment to the health services and programs that support optimal wellness for its residents.

“Part of Jefferson’s Ferry’s mission is to provide its residents with an exceptionally high quality of care and services,” said Robert Caulfield, Jefferson’s Ferry president and CEO. “The extraordinary level of care that Joanne consistently delivers and her devotion to furthering the health and well-being of our residents has helped us to expand our programs. Joanne’s new role expands her oversight of existing programs and charges her with the implementation of new programs and services.”

Lehmann’s nursing experience with a resident population spans more than 25 years. Before joining Jefferson’s Ferry in 2014, she was a wellness nurse at Sunrise Assisted Living but her work with the Ursuline sisters in Blue Point and the Cenacle sisters in Ronkonkoma was where she found her calling.

“They were my grandmothers who didn’t have grandchildren,” she said. “It was a wonderful job and gave me special insight into my nursing practice that I continue to use

at Jefferson’s Ferry. As a wellness nurse, I provide many aspects of wellness, assisting residents during physician visits and providing consulting services regarding residents’ health. My role is not a treatment nurse as much as a professional who helps in day to day life getting residents the help, resources and the services they need.”

In her new position, Lehmann will be creating programs for Jefferson’s Ferry’s Independent Living residents to help them maintain a level of wellness in their lives so that they can enjoy their independence and live life to the fullest for as long as they can.

Bruno Jr.; loving grandmother of Audrey, Nadine and Daniel Robert Ehrhardt III; and dear sister of the late Ann Liconte, the late Billy Buckley and the late Thomas Buckley.

She is survived by her loving dog Brownie and many other family members and friends.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Smithtown. Entombment followed at Washington Memorial Park in Miller Place.

“The eye is like a camera,” was the ophthalmologist’s favorite expression.

Aaron Wigdor, an eye doctor with a practice in Stony Brook who lived in Port Jefferson since the 1960s, died in April at 82. He was among those who led the charge for Port Jefferson Village to purchase Harbor Hills Country Club from the late 1960s through the ’70s, an asset the municipality still owns today, and was the first men’s tennis singles champion at the club. He is survived by his son Douglas; daughter Caren Skutch; daughter-in-law Catherine; son-in-law, William; and four grandchildren, Jacob, Simon, Julia and Carly.

Wigdor was born and raised in Bayonne, New Jersey. He attended Princeton University as an undergraduate and went on to medical school at New York University. He served in the United States Army Medical Corps in Texas at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

He was also President Lyndon Johnson’s oncall ophthalmologist for a time.

In 1968, he and his late wife Ellen moved from Texas to Port Jefferson, where the couple remained until relocating to Florida in 2016, reluctantly, according to his son.

“He really did love Port Jefferson,” his son said.

Both of his parents played a part in organizing the senior prom at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, which was a long-standing tradition in Port Jeff, for parents of the senior class to help pick a secret theme unveiled only on prom night and organize the overthe-top event.

Wigdor had many close friends in Port Jefferson, and as a young man enjoyed spending time out in front of Darling’s Stationery, where many from the community would gather in what probably would re-

semble a social media chat group today.

“You would never know he was a gossip,” his daughter said. “After my mother passed away, he got very sad. As a couple, they had a lot of friends in Port Jefferson. They were always going out. They were really pillars in the community.”

Skutch described her father’s sense of humor and intellect as “acerbic,” a trait she said she loved. She said he enjoyed reading the dictionary as a hobby, and it was a favorite response of his to instruct his kids to “go read the dictionary” when they complained of being bored.

“He was just an all-around good dad,” she said, adding that as a grandfather Wigdor taught her kids how to swim and play ball.

Wigdor’s son said he hoped people who knew him would remember how caring and dedicated he was as a doctor at his practice on Nesconset Highway, which he established in 1969.

“In this day and age when people go to see their doctor and are rushed in and out, I know that my father and his practice spent time with patients in caring for them and I believe his patients really respected that,” he said.

Longtime Port Jeff residents Anita and Arthur Spencer, who knew the Wigdors, traveled to Puerto Rico and Atlantic City among other destinations regularly together.

Anita Spencer called Wigdor a very sociable guy who had many friends and talked to many people during his days in Port Jeff.

“He was very friendly,” she said. Anita Spencer said the two couples avidly followed the Kentucky Derby and the other triple-crown horse races, though Wigdor was also a huge fan of the New York Knicks. “He had loads of friends. He was very concerned about what was going on in the village, being part of the village.”

Veterans home introduces virtual reality treatment

On May 2, the residents and patients at Long Island State Veterans Home on the campus of Stony Brook University put on stubby virtual reality goggles and headphones. After just a few seconds, they were transported to another place entirely.

Vietnam veteran Al Anderson moved his head from side to side, up and down. He was no longer on Long Island but in Mozambique, Africa. To the left was a baby hippo and to the right grass plains of golden brown. One of the home’s recreational therapists spun Anderson around in his wheelchair, and then the VR changed, and he was suddenly in a suburban backyard where hummingbirds were feeding from a trough hanging above his head.

“It puts you right there, and if I had this available to me when I started to have some problems with [post-traumatic stress disorder], it would put me out of where I am to another place,” Anderson said. “If I woke up in the middle of the night, and I had this available to me, I could put it on and probably fall right back asleep without having a problem.”

Residents and patients of the veterans home were able to try one of the new 10 MyndVR devices now part of the home’s recreational therapy tools. MyndVR is a company based out of Dallas, Texas, that tries to provide VR technology to the elderly in retirement communities and home health care services. Directors at the home hope this will become a part of regular therapy.

“It’s not just a video game, it’s actually very therapeutic,” said Michelle Cheslak, the director of therapeutic recreation. “It stimulates their cognitive ability to recall a memory. Maybe it unlocks a memory of Paris, maybe a honeymoon that they’re now reliving. Think about it. They’re probably not going to be able to go to Paris ever again; now they can travel wherever they

want, right from their seat.”

The VR headset allows those who wear it to experience full sensual awareness as the headset tracks head movement and changes audio direction based on where the person is facing.

Jonathan Spier, deputy executive director of the veterans home, said it is the first in the country to use VR for therapy.

“My goal is to really try to use this with my veterans who suffer from depression, anxiety and PTSD,” Spier said. “Some [residents] are just too physically disabled to go out into the community, so this is some technology to let that veteran go anywhere in the world.”

The money for the VR headsets was provided through a grant from the nonprofit Bowlers to Veterans Link, an organization made up of bowlers and bowling alley owners who raise money for veteran causes.

“For the people who do the work, and try and heal the veterans, [local veteran centers] are the most appreciative of the value from that,” said John Laspina, the chair of the BVL board of directors and president of Maple Family Centers.

Some of the different VR experiences include NASCAR racing, a tour through Paris, taking off in a fighter jet and swimming with dolphins among several others. Though the devices are not physically intensive, Spier said people with epilepsy or other seizure disorders will not be able to use the devices.

“It’s like I’m there, either taking off and landing,” said Vietnam veteran and adult day health care patient James Saladino about the fighter jet experience.

Veteran Ronald Kelson served in England from 1954 to 1956. He never got to visit Paris, but with virtual reality, he was able to get a small tour.

“I saw all of London, but I didn’t get to see all of Europe,” Kelson said. “You feel like you’re part of it.”

Executive Director Fred Sganga said he wants technology like this to help remove the stigma that nursing homes are depressing, monotonous places.

“We’re thrilled to be cutting edge,” Sgan-

ga said. “A nursing home should not be a boring place. I have an obligation to provide my residents with an outstanding quality of life. We like to say our residents have better social lives than we do.”

George Washington was driven north from Manhattan Island in 1776, he was already working on creating a spy network that would provide intelligence on British activities in New York City and on Long Island. Deprived of heavily fortified positions to defend, and with depleted numbers of men and supplies, Washington found it necessary to enable his army to become a moving target, to strike his enemy when and where least expected, and to base his decisions on information gathered from reliable undercover sources. One of the first to operate as a spy on Long lsland was Major John Clark.

As 1776 came to an end and enlistments expired, Tallmadge was offered a captain’s rank in the 2nd Continental Light Dragoon Regiment commanded

by Col. Elisha Sheldon. The new captain accepted his appointment with a feeling of pride, for these commands were subject to Washington’s approval.

By February of 1777, Washington’s first strategic spy network was in place with civilian intelligence expert Nathaniel Sackett conducting covert operations.

In addition to his duties as a Dragoon officer, Washington had Tallmadge working with Sackett. Tallmadge, from his position near Fairfield, Connecticut, began receiving intelligence from Major John Clark and Selah Strong on Long Island. The

Clark and Strong stopped spying for Washington on Long Island about September or October 1777 when their work was discovered by Loyalist Lt. Col Richard Hewlett. So, by the time Tallmadge was ready to take over as Washington’s intelligence chief in 1778, he already had a part of the Culper Spy route established with Brewster feeding him information he was gathering from his friends, relatives and other contacts on Long Island. All that needed to be added was a connection from Manhattan to Setauket.

The sophomore solidified first-place finishes in the high jump and 110-meter hurdles, nabbing personal bests with each victory in the boys track and field team’s 7444 home loss to undefeated league leader Patchogue-Medford May 7.

Needing to clear 5 feet, 4 inches for the top spot, Chen said he drew energy from his competition to pull out his 5-6 leap.

The day of firsts continued when senior Danny Ryan crossed the 400 hurdles finish line in 59 seconds, which according to head coach Ryan DeLuca is two seconds shy of the school record. Junior Ryan Abbatiello came in first in the triple jump with a leap of 39-9.5, a personal best by almost a foot, DeLuca said. Although sidelined for the meet, middle distance runner Eric Zulkofske also pulled out a personal best at the St. Anthony’s Invitational over the weekend. He tweaked his quad in the last 70 meters of the 1,600 to finish third, but his 4:16.24 finish bested his previous record by two seconds.

The senior made it to the state championship during the indoor season and qualified for the states in cross country in the fall.

“He tweaked his quad muscle while he was making a move to run down the leader,” DeLuca said. “I believe he would’ve [clocked] a 4:13, but it was visible in the video that he pulled up because of the injury.”

Taking his place in the 1,600 against Pat-Med (6-0), sophomore Ethan Winter’s 4:58 and junior James Moore’s 5:02 were both personal records.

Freshmen Minseob Kim and Jonah Komosinski both notched personal records in the 800 meters, with 2:14 and 2:15 times, respectively. Classmate Anthony Petrillo came in under five minutes in the mile. His 4:57.6 is a new personal best.

“He’s a young guy who’s been running some great races,” DeLuca said. “That’s a big step forward for him.”

Letters to the editor

With Mother’s Day coming up this Sunday, our editorial staff wanted to take a moment to reflect and give thanks for the powerful mothers and grandmothers who have shaped our lives.

America’s bees appear to be dying at an alarming rate, impacted by toxic pesticides often unleashed by multinational chemical giants. We can’t afford to lose bees — not when one out of every three bites of food we take depends on pollinators like them. That is why we need to restrict the use of dozens of beekilling pesticide products.

A shocking 33 percent of the nation’s honeybee colonies collapsed over the past year.

Scientific studies say that the world’s most widely used class of insecticides, called neonics, is a key factor in the devastating loss of bee colonies.

Chronic exposure to neonics can kill bees directly. It could also be making it harder for bee colonies to breed, fight off disease and survive winter.

The government has reported that the number of managed honeybee colonies in America has plummeted from 4 million in

Desirée Keegan: I don’t know where to begin, and it’s hard to find the words to say, but “Thank You” are very small ones for the sacrifices my mother has made every single day.

Her kind support throughout the years, sharing in my triumphs and tears, has never gone unnoticed.

I love the way she stops to listen, even if she doesn’t have the time. Or how she loves to make me laugh with her old jokes or terrible singing, especially when she knows I’m down. Watching a single mother be so selfless is envious, and even if I could be just a piece of what she is, I’d consider myself a success.

Alex Petroski: When I was about 22 I irresponsibly made a huge mistake that cost me a job on my previous career path. The mistake was a result of laziness and immaturity, and I also knew I was comfortable at my retail job, making enough money to feed myself and do things with friends. When I told my mom about the mistake, it was in the context of being comfortable with staying at my retail job anyway, so no big deal. She didn’t take it nearly as lightly as I did. She challenged me to do something that would make her and my dad proud, and that conversation has been the guiding principle of my work life ever since. I can’t speak for her as far as if I’ve succeeded or not yet, but it will never be for a lack of effort. Thanks for knowing when to push me, Mom. Sara-Megan Walsh: It’s said that distance makes the heart grow fonder. This is the second Mother’s Day since my mom moved south to Florida. While I’m not great at making regular phone calls, I miss being able to drop by the house on a Friday night to say hello and ask for your advice while hopefully snagging a free slice of pizza. You provide encouragement when I’m running ragged and gently push me to keep going. I love the homemade sweaters, but they aren’t a substitute for your hugs.

Kyle Barr: Dear Mom, the way I know you love me is because you always worry.

You worry about what I’m going to eat when I get home. You worry about if I’m getting enough sleep, if I take the time to be with friends, if my friends are treating me right, about what I want to do with my life. You worry if I am home too much, you worry if I’m gone too much. You worry about my student loans. You worry about my bank account.

Worry runs like grains of sugar around your mouth and down your cheeks. It’s real, solid, sweet. I see it sparkling in your eyes when you look at me. Distilled, worry becomes pure empathy.

At the beginning you gave me life and made it a part of yours. To worry is to make another person more important than yourself. You made me and in doing so made me a part of you.

I couldn’t properly explain how much I love you. Perhaps you can see it when I worry.

I am the person I am today thanks to not only my mother but my grandmother, my Aunt Eileen, friends’ mothers and so many who took me under their wings. So on Mother’s Day I say thank you not only to my mom but to all the women who made a difference in my life.

SNAP important to children’s health As a pediatrician, I feel compelled to speak out against the proposed cuts to SNAP in the farm bill, H.R.2, which is currently up for a vote in the House.

SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

It is the most effective domestic U.S. hunger safety net program and nearly half of its recipients are children. Over one million children in New York state receive benefits from SNAP. Cuts to SNAP will adversely affect children in the nearly 22,000 households with children that participate in the program right

here on Long Island.

SNAP delivers critical support to vulnerable families to ensure that they can put food on the table. Children who live in households that are food insecure are likely to be sick more often, recover from illness more slowly and be hospitalized more frequently. Lack of adequate healthy food can impair a child’s ability to perform well in school and can lead to higher levels of behavioral and emotional problems from preschool to adolescence.

SNAP is reauthorized under

the farm bill, legislation that renews federal agriculture, trade and nutrition programs.

At present, SNAP benefits are not enough to provide funding with the resources to obtain an adequate healthy diet, and they should not be cut further.

No child should have to struggle with hunger and food insecurity in our country. SNAP serves as a critical support for the health and well-being of children, and its funding should not be cut in the farm bill.

Red Sox, Yankees fans feel October excitement in May

I

t’s only May and, despite the warm weather, it feels a bit like October around here, at least, if you talk to fans of the Yankees and Red Sox. The two best teams in baseball, as of earlier this week, were preparing o go head-to-head in a three-game series that seemed to have more on the line than a typical series between the heated rivals at this point in spring.

The Red Sox had that incredibly hot start, winning 17 of their first 19 games, tearing up the league anyone who

By Daniel Dunaief and dared to try to compete with them. The Yankees, meanwhile, started slowly, sputtering to a .500 record.

And then the Yankees seemed to have gotten as hot as the weather, scoring runs in the clutch, pitching with confidence and bringing in rookies like Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar, who play more like seasoned veterans.

On a recent evening, my wife and I made a quick stop to the grocery store. As we were walking out, a friend saw me in my Yankees sweatshirt. The friend asked if the team pulled out a win, even though they were losing 4-0 in the eighth inning.

As my wife waited patiently, I recounted nearly every at bat that led to another improbable Yankees comeback. A man who worked at the supermarket came over to listen, put up his hand to high-five me and said he had a feeling they might come back.

While the team measures the success of the season by the ability to win the World Series, the fans, particularly during a season with so much early promise, can bask in the excitement of individual games or series.

The first season, as the incredibly long 162 games from March through October is called, can include numerous highlights that allow fans to appreciate the journey, as well as the destination.

Nothing is a given in a game or a season. We attend or watch any game knowing that the walk-off home run the rookie hit could just as easily have been an inning ending double play.

Ultimately, the most important part of the season is the recognition that it is a game. You can see that when the players mob each other at the plate or smile through their interviews with the sideline reporters after a tight contest.

Year after year, all these teams with all their fans hope the season ends with a victory parade. They want to be able to say, “I was there.”

Ultimately, in life, that’s what we’re hoping for. Moments to cheer for friends and family, to celebrate victories and to enjoy these contests.

Indeed, the winners often look back on the moments when nothing came easily, when their team, their family or their opportunity seemed to be so elusive. These are occasions when nothing that seems to go right turns into those where everything goes according to plan. They don’t happen because you’ve got the right fortune cookie, put on the right socks or asked for some deity to help your team beat another team full of equally worthy opponents, whose fans utter the same prayers.

They happen because of the hard work and dedication. They also often happen because people are taking great pride in doing their jobs and being a part of a team.

Right now, it feels like these two blood rivals are well-matched, facing off in a May series that can bring the energy of October. And, hey, if you’re looking to connect with someone, put on a Yankees or Red Sox sweatshirt and head to the supermarket.

And since my office was only some five minutes from the house and three minutes from their school, I felt I could get to them quickly if they needed me. I was able to look in on them in the course of each day. In fact, I had more trouble convincing my mother than my children that it was acceptable to work both inside and outside the home. I just could never understand how all three unfailingly picked friends who lived on the farthest ends of the school district and had to be driven back and forth. That and the constant car pooling for games and music lessons made me grateful that I had learned to drive — not a typical skill among my urban classmates when I was growing up.

I weathered their teenage years as best I could, sometimes marveling that only my children could make me scream (and my mother). At the same time, my husband and I vicariously enjoyed the children’s various successes: academic, musical and athletic. They were

blossoming into young adults and we were regularly irritated by them and immensely proud of them.

As the children reached their later teenage years, the family dynamic shifted. My husband was terminally ill, and the children were forced to deal with death. My mother and my father had both passed on by then, and the boys had been deeply touched by their loss, but the death of a parent at a far younger age than expected for either their father or themselves struck me as a cruel trick. Somehow we had not lived up to our part of the parenting contract.

I guess that was when my children started to become my friends. It probably would have happened around that age anyway, but we became allies in the face of adversity. And then life’s wonderful joys unfurled. ... They graduated, got jobs, found their loved ones and eventually made me a grandmother.

That’s a club one can’t apply to oneself, but having arrived there, I can endlessly sing its praises.

Bottom line: How ultimately satisfying it is for me to be a mom.

The urge to hold and to love a baby, my baby, was a conscious one. I also had professional ambitions, so in those days, before women expected to be able to do it all, there was a bit of a conflict in my head. Curiously, while I don’t remember telling anyone about my maternal urges, I did mention it on my first date to the man I eventually married. He told me that he too

When I did have my first child, I was quietly terrified. I was the caboose child in my parents’ families, meaning that my parents were older, and everyone in my generation was already born before I came on the scene. There were no babies for me

to practice on, I had never given a baby a bottle nor changed a diaper, and I was afraid I was inadvertently going to do some terrible harm to a helpless infant. It wasn’t until the baby’s one-month checkup, when the pediatrician exalted about how his development — size and weight — were “off the charts,” that I began to relax and believe the baby would survive my ignorance.

After that the parenting urge was so fulfilling that we did it twice more in record time. Judging from my friends’ tales of their children, we had it easy with three boys. They were exceedingly energetic but never moody, didn’t hold a grudge for more than three minutes, weren’t particular about what clothes they wore and could be entertained with a generous supply of miniature trucks on rainy, “indoor” days or any ball game on “outside” days. Baseball on our dead end street was their favorite, and I became a pretty good pitcher, if I do say so myself.

They didn’t much like it when I started the first newspaper and was away from the house a great deal.
