VILLAGE West Meadow Beach temporarily closed for dredging

Since Dec. 4, the Town of Brookhaven beach and Trustees Road in Stony Brook have been closed to the public. The town’s parks department made the decision to accommodate an ongoing Suffolk County dredging project.

“It was the determination of the law and parks departments to close the beach due to safety and liability issues,” town Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station) said. “Resident safety is paramount to the town.”

While the dredging project is in effect, multiple trucks and dredging equipment will be accessing the beach, which could potentially cause dangerous situations for visitors if the beach remained open.

Dredging is nothing new for Long Island waterways, according to Larry Swanson, interim dean and associate dean of the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and director of the Waste Reduction and Management Institute at Stony Brook University. ally done in the winter to protect marine organisms, which aren’t as active during the season as they are in warmer months.

He said the currents are typically strong

where the county is dredging, which most likely will produce clean sand and gravel.

Swanson said Long Beach in Smithtown, which is located slightly west of the Stony Brook beach and regularly needs dredging material, is progressing to the east/northeast about 1 yard per year.

“What that does as it progresses, it tends to cause the currents to eat into West Meadow Beach,” he said. “So when that happens, sometimes there’s a cut that forms in West Meadow Beach.”

The dean said it is ideal to fill up the cut so it doesn’t keep eroding, as there’s a possibility in 20 years that it could break into West Meadow creek.

“The preservation of beaches as we know them is somewhat depending upon this source of dredge material,” Swanson said.

The dean said dredging is done for other reasons, too.

“The channel coming into Stony Brook Harbor fills up to the point where the low water depth is no more than 1 or 2 feet, and most boats that enter Stony Brook Harbor have a draft in excess of 1 or 2 feet and so they hit bottom,” Swanson said. “People don’t want to damage their boats.”

West Meadow Beach is expected to reopen on or about Jan. 1, according to a statement from Brookhaven Town.

Tande said Nganang has been in isolation in the offices of the judicial police in Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé. A representative of the U.S. Embassy visited Nganang Dec. 11.

Robert Harvey, a distinguished professor at SBU, said it was a relief when the contempt charge was dropped, and he remains hopeful. The embassy representative contacted him with a message from Nganang.

He wanted his former students to know that he hasn’t forgotten about their letters of recommendation. Harvey said Nganang was on a leave of absence this semester to attend to family business in Zimbabwe.

“He’s a popular teacher,” Harvey said.

“He’s impassioned; he’s effective.”

On his SBU profile page, the professor wrote that his intellectual work covers scholarly activities, writing and essayistic interventions.

Three Village residents were treated to a local holiday favorite Dec. 10 as the Three Village Holiday Electric Light Parade traveled down the streets of East Setauket.

The parade kicked off at 5 p.m. with a variety of vehicles and floats adorned with lights that added a festive feel to the chilly night.

Presented by the Three Village Kiwanis Club, the event featured floats from students from the Three Village Central School District and the participation of Scout troops and various businesses and organizations from the area, including Shine Dance Studios and North Shore Jewish Center.

Long Island Companies, also marched and fired their muskets. The grand marshals this year were the Culper Spies, with Three Village Historical Society historian, Beverly C. Tyler, portraying Abraham Woodhull.

Cheerleaders, pep squad members, athletes and Stony Brook University mascot Wolfie also participated.

After the parade, families gathered at the Kiwanis park next to Se-Port Deli on Main Street for a tree-lighting ceremony and the chance to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, who arrived in a train replica decorated with colorful lights.

Teen library contest returns For the fourth consecutive year, the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library is showcasing the writing and artistic talents of teenagers in the community.

The Helen Stein Shack Picture Book Contest calls for teens in grades seven through 12 who live in the Three Village Central School District to create a children’s picture book. Winning authors will receive a monetary prize; have their book bound and added to the library’s collection; and be recognized at an awards ceremony April 23.

The contest is divided into two grade categories, grades seven through nine and grades 10 through 12, with one first-prize winner and one second-prize winner selected from each group. Each entry can be the work of a single author/illustrator or can be a collaborative effort of one author and a one artist/illustrator. A maximum of one entry will be accepted per author. Library employees, trustees, and their immediate family members are not eligible to enter.

Each of the first-prize award recipients will receive a $400 scholarship and each of the second-prize award recipients will receive a $100 scholarship. In the event that a winning entry is a collaboration between an author and artist/illustrator, the prize will be shared.

Those interested may obtain an official entry form in the library’s lobby or online at www. emmaclark.org/picturebookaward. Included with the form are the contest procedures and guidelines. Completed picture book, along with a completed official entry form can be submitted to the children’s cepartment anytime between Jan. 3 through 31.

A 42-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station possessed a metal knuckle knife while at a location on Wenmore Lane in Port Jefferson Station Dec. 11 and made threatening statements to another person, according to police. He was arrested and charged with first-degree menacing and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

At a home on Route 46 in Shirley Dec. 10 at about 8:30 a.m., a 33-year-old man from Centereach stole cash, according to police. He was arrested in Centereach and charged with petit larceny.

No parking

At about 9:30 p.m. Oct. 31, a 20-year-old man from Sound Beach removed signs with posts dug into the ground outside of the Harbormaster building on West Broadway in Port Jefferson indicating parking spots were for visitors of that building only and threw them into Port Jefferson Harbor, according to police. He was arrested Dec. 11 and charged with third-degree tampering.

Punched in PJ Station

A 29-year-old man from Miller Place punched another man in the face while at a location on Oakland Avenue in Port Jefferson Station Dec. 11 at about 9:30 p.m., according to police. He was arrested and charged with third-degree assault.

Busted with drugs

While seated in a 2012 Jeep near the intersection of Anne Drive and Majestic Road in Selden Dec. 9 at about 12 p.m., a 42-year-old woman from Selden possessed cocaine, according to police. She was arrested and charged with seventhdegree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Swerving motorist

At about 3:30 a.m. Dec. 9, a 19-yearold woman from Holtsville was driving west on Middle Country Road in Selden when she failed to maintain her lane and crossed over the double yellow line median, according to police. She was pulled over and police discovered she was driving the car under the influence of a drug, police said. She was arrested and charged with first-degree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

A 20-year-old man from Setauket intentionally drove a 2003 Dodge on the grass of the Islip Career Center on Locust Avenue in Oakdale Dec. 6 at about 9 a.m., according to police. He was arrested in Setauket Dec. 7 and charged with criminal mischief.

Popped for possession

At about 8 a.m. Dec. 6, a 44-year-old man from Centereach was seated in a parked vehicle on Old Town Road in Setauket with an illegal drug in his possession, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Pilfered plate

The front license plate of a car parked in the driveway of a home on Clinton Street in Port Jefferson Station was stolen Dec. 10 at about 9 a.m., according to police.

Wet bandit strikes again

At about midnight Nov. 27, someone entered the basement of a home on Hawkins Avenue in Setauket, disconnected a flue pipe and removed a patch from the pipe, according to police. A police report was filed Dec. 11.

Breaking down

Someone kicked and damaged the front door of a home on William Street in Port Jefferson Station at about 9:30 a.m. Dec. 10, according to police.

At about 7 p.m. Dec. 9, someone stole GPS devices from Walmart on Nesconset Highway in Setauket, according to police.

Money moves

Someone stole money from a 2013 Honda parked outside of The Meadow Club on Route 112 in Terryville Dec. 9 at about 11 p.m., according to police.

Watch where you’re going

At about midnight Dec. 8, a 23-year-old man from Coram confronted someone in the driveway of a home on Cliff Road in Belle Terre while in the driver’s seat of a vehicle.

After a verbal altercation, he recklessly sped away from the property, and ran over the victim’s foot, according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree reckless endangerment. The victim was taken to the hospital for an evaluation, police said.

Gym thief

Someone stole car keys from a jacket in an unlocked locker at Powerhouse Gym on Route 25A in Miller Place Dec. 8 at about 2:30 p.m. and removed a wallet containing credit cards and cash from a 2016 Toyota parked in the parking lot, according to police.

Infinite possibilities

A gym bag containing clothes and cash was stolen from an unlocked 2018 Infiniti parked in the driveway of a home on Longhorn Lane in Setauket Dec. 7 at about 3:30 a.m., according to police.

Vigil remembers victims of gun crimes

Three Village residents will be taking part in a nationwide vigil today, Dec. 14, at Setauket Presbyterian Church.

The event, organized by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, marks five years since the Sandy Hook tragedy, where one lone shooter killed 20 children and six adults.

Volunteers and members from Moms Demand Action, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, Building Bridges in Brookhaven, Setauket Presbyterian Church and local residents concerned about gun violence are participating. The vigil honors the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and the 500,000 victims and survivors of gun violence since December 2012.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures to protect people from gun violence while also respecting the Second Amendment. Moms Demand Action campaigns

for new and stronger solutions to the lax gun laws and loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our children and families.

During the event stories of gun violence survivors are shared, the lives lost are remembered and a candlelight vigil calls attendees to remember the victims and honor them with action.

This event is part of a nationwide tribute in partnership with the Newtown Foundation, Newtown Action Alliance, Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Everytown Survivor Network, Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Organizing for Action, States United to Prevent Gun Violence, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and Women’s March.

Sini announces transition team for DA’s office In an exclusive interview, the district attorney-elect sheds light on his support staff and goals for his first term

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewsmedia.com Restoring public trust in a powerful position, rebuilding a low-morale office and launching aggressive initiatives to move the criminal justice system forward is a lot to put on one person’s plate. But for Tim Sini (D), Suffolk County’s current police commissioner and district attorney-elect set to take office Jan. 1, it’s an all too familiar task and one he said he’s more than ready to tackle.

Sini is replacing Suffolk County DA Tom Spota (D), who officially resigned Nov. 17 following an indictment for federal obstruction of justice charges. Spota pleaded not guilty to being involved in the cover-up of a civil rights violation by former Suffolk Police Commissioner James Burke, whose position Sini assumed in 2016.

“I came into the police department and did an assessment of the office, interviewed people and turned over all the rocks,” Sini said during a discussion at John L. Barry Police Headquarters in Yaphank Nov. 28.

“It’s an eerily similar situation now.”

The 37-year-old Babylon native, who began his career as an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York as a federal prosecutor, said his first step between now and January is to conduct a “top to bottom” evaluation of the DA’s office. This will include extensive interviews with every employee, gauging who to keep, who to remove and what the office’s strengths and weaknesses are; investigations into finances and documents; and taking a look at training and accountability protocols, he said.

“My overall objectives for the job are clear and simple,” Sini said. “Reform the office, ensure we have the right people in the right spots for the right reasons, adopt best practices, and get the office focused on fighting crime, eradicating violent street gangs and aggressively addressing the opioid problem. From now until January, I’ll be putting in long days and nights, as will the members of my team, so we can hit the ground running on the first.”

He said he also hopes to set up a Conviction Integrity Bureau and gang unit within

Another stated goal from the DA-elect is to form strong bonds with outside groups from civics to substance abuse organizations to the attorney general’s office. Sini added that he hopes to increase diversity in the office.

“We’re going to be doing a lot of outreach to communities of color, working with professional organizations like the Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association,” he said.

In order to help ready his administration, Sini assembled a 13-member transition team that was announced last week.

The team is a bipartisan group of lawyers, community leaders, government and communications representatives, and criminal justice experts with years of experience in

fighting corruption, pushing transparency and serving the public, Sini said.

“What’s consistent throughout the team is people with integrity who have a real desire to affect positive change in the district attorney’s office and the criminal justice system in general, which is in the best interest of the county,” he said.

Co-chairing the team are David Kelley, a former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and Sini’s campaign chairman, and Justin Meyers, the Suffolk County assistant police commissioner and head of the police department’s office of strategic communications.

Other members of the team include Leslie Anderson, a former Suffolk County assistant DA and chief of that office’s Gang Investigations and Prosecutions Unit; John Barry, Suffolk’s first deputy police commissioner, whom Sini pointed to as a top criminal investigator who has mostly worked on narcotics and political corruption cases; former assistant DA and Bureau Chief William Ferris, who serves as a special prosecutor in the DA’s office and intended to run in the Republican primary for DA but backed out and later endorsed Sini; Connie Corso, a former budget director for the county; Howard Master, a former deputy chief of the Criminal Division and attorney in the Public Integrity Unit at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York; and Evelyn Rodriguez, a victim advocate and community leader.

“We have immense talent on this team and folks that really understand criminal justice, understand the district attorneyelect’s vision and goals, and understand how to do the things we need to do,” Meyers

said. “I think we have all the tools to get the job done and make sure there’s a seamless transition of power to put [Sini] in a position to start moving mountains on day one.”

Kelley agreed, adding that Sini’s selections for the team cover a wide range of issues, all of which he said he views as crucial to the mission of the DA’s office.

“Everything from budget to former prosecutors to people familiar with the operations of the office so that we cannot only assess who should stay and who should go, which programs should be enhanced, which should be eliminated,” Kelley said. “Tim’s vision for the office is to really get his arms around the current state of affairs, principally to restore integrity and transparency to the office. We really need to get under the tent and see exactly what’s going on.”

Sini made it clear that regaining public trust will be a major focus in his first year.

When asked what he intends to do about the nearly $2.7 million in bonuses Spota has awarded prosecutors since 2012, he said he and his transition team have already requested that the DA’s office cease paying them. He said the acting DA’s office, led by Emily Constant, has complied with that request.

“I’m not saying I’m not going to fight for proper pay for my employees, but I’m going to do it in a transparent and appropriate way,” Sini said. “Public trust between the people and any law enforcement agency is critical.

It’s incredibly important that we restore that trust, and while it’s not entirely certain to me when we’ll be at a place where I’ll be satisfied, I can tell you … starting now, moving forward, every single day, my team and I are going to be working to restore that trust.”

Obituaries Remembering publisher, editor, writer John Kominicki

Kominicki took the stage at a Melville event center and accepted the top honor a Long Island journalist can receive: the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Press Club of Long Island. Ten years earlier, Kominicki — many of us called him just that — had arrived as the new publisher and editor of the venerable Long Island Business News. Just one decade later he’d be gone, felled by cancer.

That night was prime Kominicki — adlibbing uproariously, tossing hair back from eyes, jousting with power brokers and musing about the future of journalism.

Gently chiding his audience not to confuse technological advances with journalistic achievement, he evoked the spirit of Edward R. Murrow.

The latest computers, devices and means of electronic transmission — even the emergence of the internet — did not, he said, necessarily improve journalism.

“Readers, viewers and listeners expect — demand, actually — stuff that’s fast, stuff that’s splashy and stuff that’s free,” Kominicki said. “It will never end. The future is about change, however it plays out.”

“Our craft doesn’t change,” he asserted. “It is assuredly about excellence in reporting and writing and storytelling. It’s about how we inform and amaze and entertain. It’s always been about that.”

He paused, then: “Ultimately the change is no change at all.”

Flashing the slightest of smiles, he added, “Good luck with the change.”

The performance was vintage Kominicki — insightful and irreverent, articulate yet casual, a blend of media studies and rock ’n’ roll attitude.

Now revered as a local journalistic icon, Kominicki had a background that was anything but conventional. Growing up in Keane, New Hampshire, he registered at Boston College as a theater major, and then dropped out and joined the U.S. Army. He served active duty not in a battlefield but as an editor of military community publications — a distinction he noted with his usual irony-laced good humor. He married a military newsroom co-worker, Marie. Next came a Hemingway-like stint as a foreign correspondent for Stars and Stripes military newspaper, where he covered among other events the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 1992 he, Marie and their young daughter Anya repatriated.

Kominicki was hired as editor of a Fort Worth, Texas weekly. In 1995 Dolan Media Company hired him to helm their

Oklahoma City business daily. Three years later he was transferred to Long Island.

He bought a home in Stony Brook and became a Long Islander.

My introduction to Kominicki came in the spring of 1998 when he asked me to write a weekly front-page column for LIBN, as the paper is known.

“I’m going to turn this newspaper around,” he said. “Can you help me?”

It wasn’t an easy task. LIBN had fended off change for decades, deferring to advertisers and long-term subscribers and letting coverage languish. Kominicki immediately ended the favoritism to advertisers.

He insisted reporters cover events and do interviews where possible in person. He demanded smart, lively writing. He edited out bias but encouraged writers to develop their own points of view.

Kominicki stayed on at LIBN until September 2013. He became a media entrepreneur, founding a website and business platform dedicated to fostering economic development. He did some occasional writing and fixed up the French farmhouse he and Marie had bought during his Stars and Stripes days as their retirement home. He was inducted into the Press Club of Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame in 2014.

We stayed in touch, sharing occasional early-morning cups of coffee at Starbucks. My wife Cindy and I cherish the memory of hosting them last summer over our backyard grill.

In April the Queens Courier newspaper chain bought the Long Island Press online publication. The publisher Victoria Schneps-Yunis had heard about Kominicki and hired him to restore the Press as a monthly — almost exactly 20 years after his LIBN turnaround began.

I was delighted and proud when Kominicki recruited me again to write a pair of columns.

From his farmhouse in France, he edited my first four pieces then fell ill.

Kominicki showed a generation of Long Island journalists what it takes to practice genuine journalism. He demonstrated how to ask tough but fair questions, how to deflect editorial intrusions and how to deter editorial bias.

Perhaps most importantly, he preserved the role of humor and decency in local journalism.

Our prayers go to Marie and Anya. John, you will long be remembered and are already sorely missed. If heaven has a newspaper, you’re editing it. May you rest in peace.

Kominicki died Dec. 5 at the age of 62.

A memorial is being planned for after the holidays.

TBR News Media says goodbye to a former employee

by MeliSSa MorriS Diane Orton died peacefully at her home in Hood River, Oregon, Nov. 22 surrounded by family. She was born in 1932 in Rahway, New Jersey to parents Gladys Fellows and Dr. Alexander Breslow. Her older brother, Ronald Breslow, a professor of chemistry at Columbia University, predeceased her by one month.

After graduating from Rahway High School, Diane Joy matriculated first to Bradford Junior College and then to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she received a bachelor of arts degree in English. She married William Dickson Cunningham II, also of Rahway, in 1955 and settled in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, where they raised two children. As a lifelong advocate for children, Diane began a career teaching, both in New Jersey and in Italy, while her husband was stationed there. They divorced in 1963.

Diane loved to sing and joined the Summit Chorale where she met her husband of 52 years, Mark DeForest Orton Jr., a choral conductor. They moved to Long Island where she had three more children. Diane taught at a school for the autistic, and also used her literary skills working for local newspapers, with an extensive tenure at The Village Times

in Setauket. She was an excellent writer and proofreader, helping steer the paper to a successful weekly production for many years. In 1979, she was awarded The Village Times’ Woman of the Year for her community contributions to the arts. She sang faithfully in the Setauket Presbyterian Church Choir for nearly 40 years, where her husband was musical director.

Diane was known for her warmth, humor and brilliant literary mind. She played Scrabble daily, wore out her library card and was an undefeated champion on a 1960s television game show called “Word for Word” that required contestants to build words from the letters of other words.

She also loved animals and had a weakness for any stray in need of a good meal. She went to the ocean whenever she could, and loved to travel with family.

Three years ago, Diane and Mark moved to Hood River so they could be nearer to more family. Their home is surrounded by orchards and set between the snowcapped peaks of Mount Hood and Mount Adams.

It was here that she graced a short battle with ovarian cancer.

Her devotion as a mother and champion of children’s rights defined Diane’s life.

Patriots propelled by Dorf to close win

BY BILL LANDON Centereach epéeist Abir Das worried Ward Melville’s boys fencing squad. The junior had taken to the strip twice Dec. 12, outscoring his previous opponents 5-2 and 5-3. With Ward Melville ahead 13-11, and a must-win match on the line, the fencer stepped up to face eighth-grader Will Lehr, who was 1-1 on the day. As he retied the match 4-4 and his visiting team’s crowd kept chanting, Das just kept counting.

“I tried to stay calm out on the strip,” he said. “I have a habit of counting numbers in my head to stay calm, get in the zone and set up my game. When [it’s loud] and everyone’s watching you, you need to learn to move out and up on your opponent. It’s like a chess game, so I tried to out-strategize him.”

Das rose to the challenge, edging his adversary 5-4 with his parry hit, but the Patriots dropped the hammer and swept the last two bouts to secure a 15-12 win to stay perfect on the season.

Ward Melville senior Jared Dorf fell in his first two bouts in epée, but came through when it mattered most — winning his final match 5-2 for the all-important 14th victory.

“Jared is our captain — he’s been on the team for a while — and I wasn’t sure if he could execute our plan to disengage [his opponent’s] parry and to be aggressive enough

to hit the target,” Ward Melville head coach Jeff Salmon said. “We were screaming to find that moment and attack, [but at the same time] avoiding that parry, but the kids were having trouble just landing their points.”

Perfect on the night for the Patriots was sophomore sabreist Leo Takemaru, who swept his three matches 5-0, 5-2, 5-0. Junior epéeist Ben Rogak won both of his bouts, 5-1 and 5-2. His second win was the final bout of the evening, against Centereach senior James Moore.

“I was very nervous — we’ve had a very strong team in the past, but a lot of the other teams have up-and-coming fencers that we have to be careful of,” Rogak said. “I have confidence that we will be the strongest team throughout the season, but we have to grind it out, buckle down, and we need more support from the bench.”

Moore finished 2-for-3, winning his first two matches 5-2 before falling to Rogak.

“I was energized, motivated,” Moore said. “I was recovering quickly and recovering forward, and I felt good. I came in here and I knew we were going to have a respectable meet.”

Foilist Frank DiCanio III swept all three of his bouts for Centereach, besting his opponents 5-0, 5-4 and 5-0.

First-year head coach Christina Piraino said she couldn’t be happier with her team’s performance against the powerhouse Patriots.

“The highlight was in foil — DiCanio won all three and Jarod Chang, he’s been working really hard in practice, and their hard work paid off today,” said Piraino, a Centereach

Even still, Salmon said he’s most worried about Middle Country’s other fencing team: Newfield.

“I think they’re the second best team in the county, and it’s no secret they trained in the off-season,” the coach said of Newfield.“They

have key players that have trained all year long, and they’re ready.”

Dorf said the boisterous Centereach crowd had an impact on his team’s performance, and they’ll learn from it for the meets ahead.

“It’s not an exciting moment when you lose any bout, but any good fencer is an amazing person to watch and we could feel their pride in that moment,” he said, pointing to Das’ win. “But when you face a good opponent, it shows us that we’re not the best all-around, and that we have room for improvement.”

Correcting record, finding common ground

Equal internet access for all is at risk if the FCC votes to kill net neutrality Dec. 14.

Net neutrality is worth fighting for The right to full and equal internet access for all United States citizens might seem like a given, but that could change this week.

The United States Federal Communications Commission, the government’s independent agency created to regulate communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable, is expected to vote Dec. 14 to end a set of regulations established in 2015, which prevents internet service providers from treating data unfairly. The protections are referred to as net neutrality.

Without these regulations in place, providers could create tiered internet access subscriptions requiring customers to pay higher prices for faster connections; slow down or block data streams from certain websites or mobile applications; and even censor content. FCC data suggests large portions of the United States have limited choices when it comes to choosing an internet service provider. The lack of competition and rollback of net neutrality regulations could result in providers holding users hostage for the content they currently consume, charging higher prices for the ability to have access to high-speed connectivity.

The matter is further complicated because internet service providers, in most cases, are companies with vast media empires that also produce their own content. For example, Comcast provides internet access to its customers, but also owns NBC, so a conflict of interest could be created if Comcast had the ability to slow down the data streams of its competitors’ websites, like CBS, for its subscribers.

The FCC is overseen by Congress, which obviously further complicates any situation based on the political gridlock currently hanging over every decision passing through the body, big or small.

It is expected that a legal battle may ensue following the vote this week, and it is incumbent upon all Americans to speak out to local representatives in Congress to make sure their constituents are in favor of maintaining fair and equal internet access for all. Access to information for everyone is incredibly important for a healthy democracy. While this might not seem like the most important issue in front of Congress these days, it should not fly under the radar, and deserves Americans’ attention.

There may be a reason the only letter Professor Arnold Wishnia left out of his recommended side-by-side readings list in the Nov. 23 The Village Times Herald letter “Comparing letters side by side” was his Aug. 24 “Zeldin’s letter reinforces Zeldin’s lies” submission.

Perhaps it’s because folks would be reminded he’d contradicted the Charlottesville police chief’s declaration “the crowd became increasingly violent with mutually engaged combatants,” by claiming the “evidence seems to be a photograph originally from a Greek demonstration in 2009, gone viral in the right-wing blogosphere.” Using hindsight it’s clear why Arnold would prefer to either spin away or scrub his wholly discredited assertion.

My specific Nov. 9 reference to that comment was not to cite it as a “source,” but rather to use it as an example of why readers should, “approach some of Arnold’s suppositions with appropriate skepticism.” My actual

source for making that point was Chief Thomas’ irrefutable summary of the Charlottesville riot.

And I most certainly did not use “right-wing blogs” (Sept.

14) while researching a history of the 1930s German Communist Party and related rise of antifa. Mainstream outlets offered plenty of solid material, including pictures of Antifaschistische flags. The images clearly showed they are “remarkably and likely deliberately similar” to those being waved by today’s thugs.

It’s instructive to note the latter-mentioned letter was very carefully and appropriately vetted for factual sourcing by The Village Times Herald staff. Far from sharing info from sketchy blogs, as Mr. Wishnia claimed, I forwarded, upon request and for their review, only credible reporters and news organizations to make my points on the Charlottesville tragedy. Given the many concrete details I’d offered, their diligence was more

than welcomed.

Here’s one example. I provided a link to a story reported by Sheryl Stolberg from The New York Times. As a real-time eyewitness she acknowledged, “I saw club-wielding “antifa” beating white nationalists being led out of the park.” That submission was closed by my praising Nancy Pelosi and left-leaning publications for acknowledging “the growing threats posed by radical left-wing groups.”

Continuing in that spirit, I’d like to point out, through all our back and forth, if you look closely, you’ll find that even Arnold Wishnia and I have swerved into some common ground. We’ve both agreed the KKK had a “long sordid alliance with the Democrat Party.” And, to different degrees, Arnold and I accept there has been violence coming from the “left.” ’Tis the season.

A clause not to be taken lightly In the Nov. 30 The Village Times Herald letter, “Fact-check Trump’s statements,” Professor Bob Arrigon took me to task for questioning the sincerity of President Barack Obama, when Mr. Obama took the oath of office and promised to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” In support of his criticism, the good professor went on to claim that Mr. Obama had been a professor of constitutional law — he was actually a nontenured parttime “senior lecturer” — and therefore knew the Constitution inside and out. But let us not nitpick over his actual title, and let us assume that he was in fact intimately familiar with the provisions of our great Constitution, which is the foundation for the laws of our land, at the time he was sworn in.

As a certified constitutional scholar, President Obama must have been familiar with the provisions of Article II, Section 3, which requires that the president “shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed.”

This is known as the “Take Care” clause of the Constitution, and it is not meant to be taken lightly.

It means that the president is required to enforce all of the laws, and not just those laws that he likes. But when President Obama took his oath of office, he knew full well that there were many laws that he planned to disregard, or not enforce, and he was therefore not telling the truth. Furthermore, he supported legislation, such as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, that Congress did not pass, and thus was not enacted into law.

This, however, failed to deter the former president, and he proceeded with its implementation, in flagrant denial of the specific intent of the Congress.

Thus, at his own discretion, he decided to ignore certain actual laws of which he did not approve, and to invent and impose “laws” that Congress had specifically rejected. Either this was his interpretation of preserving, protecting and defending the Constitution, or he was neglecting to tell the truth when he took the oath of office.

In addition to DACA and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans, other examples of unconstitutional acts on the part of President Obama included

the Chrysler bailout, in which labor unions were illegally given preference over secured creditors; recess appointments, made during a time when the Senate was not in recess; the oppressive Clean Air Act, which far exceeded the legal authority of the EPA; numerous provisions of Obamacare, including exemptions for favored political allies; illegal harassment of conservative groups by the IRS; agreement to U.S. participation in the Paris accord without the advice and consent of the Senate; and many other actions too numerous to mention.

Fortunately, when President Trump took his oath of office, he meant what he swore, and the constitutional transgressions of his predecessor are being systematically dismantled, often by executive orders that negate those issued by President Obama. In a refreshing departure from the policies of the previous administration, it should be noted that all of President Trump’s initiatives, including those in fulfillment of his campaign promises, are being undertaken in a fully lawful manner.

A well-known businessman, who spent considerable time on TV after he had made his money, was elected president — in case you’ve been living in a hole somewhere for the last year or so — despite not having any experience whatsoever as a politician.

Then, recently, the New York Yankees, who expect a championship every year and aren’t fond of learning curves, went out and hired someone

into the living rooms of those who paused to watch the program that featured him.

And now, like Trump, Boone must do some quick on-the-job training, becoming a modern-day manager.

Now, I don’t expect Boone to attack other players, managers or umpires on Twitter, the way the president has done when he unloads written salvos against anyone who dares to defy or annoy him.

What I’m wondering, though, is how did these men get their jobs?

Since when is experience doing a high profile job no longer necessary? What made Trump and Boone the choice of the Electoral College and the best candidate to make the Yankees greater again, respectively?

These Yankees, after all, were surprisingly great this year, falling one game short of the fall classic.

One word may answer that question: television. Somehow we have gone from the comical notion, years ago that “I’m not a doctor, I play one on TV,” to the reality of “I know better

because I seem that way on TV.” Long ago, in 1960, when Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy were running for president, TV helped sway voters, particularly those who watched an important debate. So, I suppose, it seems like a logical extension to imagine that TV helped fast track the careers of people who spent time sharing their thoughts, tag lines and observations with us through that same medium.

Sports and reality TV have commonalities. A sport is the ultimate live, unscripted event, where people offer off-the-cuff thoughts and analyses on fluid action. Each game and each moment can bring the unexpected — a triple play, an inside-the-park home run or a hidden-ball trick — that requires an instant reaction.

Similarly, albeit in a different way, the reality TV that brought Trump to the top of the political heap gave him a chance to respond to changing situations, offering a cutting analysis of the potential, or lack thereof, for people on his show.

While viewers watch these familiar faces and hear their voices, people can become convinced of the wisdom and abilities of these TV stars who become spokespersons and champions for their own brands.

So, does Trump offer any insight into Boone? The new Yankees manager may find that second-guessing other people is much easier than making decisions himself and working as a part, or a leader, of a team.

Trump has bristled at all the second-guessers. While he’s familiar with the media scrutiny, Boone, too, may find it irritating that so many other New Yorkers are absolutely sure they know better when it comes to in-game decisions that affect the outcome of a Yankees contest.

Perhaps what Boone and Trump teach us is that selling your ideas or yourself on TV has become a replacement for experience. TV experience has become a training ground for those selling their ideas to the huddled masses yearning for a chance to cheer.

children and grandchildren scattered over three continents, it may not be possible to be together for the celebrations. Perhaps worst of all are those in unsatisfying relationships who are perceived to be coupled but are in reality painfully lonely.

Loneliness, health studies have shown, can cause increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, depression, accelerated cognitive decline and even trigger suicide. And in this world of electronic devices operating on the internet, even a phone call with the sound of a warm voice is now often replaced by a tidy and sanitized email or text message.

How are we to respond to such feelings of loneliness?

First is to be aware that those around us may not be so caught up in the spirit of the season. For those who have plenty, whether in worldly goods or in simple joy, this is the time for sharing. Sometimes it is not so obvious when others are hurting. If a neighbor is a shut-in, it is easy to guess that the person would like a visit, even a short one, or an errand run on their behalf. These

are immediate solutions. But social isolation and loneliness are not necessarily the same. That neighbor may have few social connections but enjoy an existence rich with books, music or hobbies. On the other hand, loneliness is a subjective condition in which a person feels isolated, even if surrounded by people most of the time. That person is just as needy, or more so, for human interaction but that need may be harder to discern.

Research at the University of California, San Francisco, reveals that “most lonely people are married, live with others and are not clinically depressed,” according to a recent article by Jane Brody in The New York Times.

Some more obvious remedies for those who are lonely or socially isolated to help themselves might be volunteering at a hospital or assisted living center, a soup kitchen or a nursery school. Giving to others in need brings its own rewards. Joining a group with shared interests — anything from quilting to trivial pursuit — can help. A book club or a class is a way to keep the mind engaged while perhaps finding others with

whom to socialize. And the fail-safe solution for those who desire interaction with others is to get a dog. It is not possible to take a dog for its walk three times a day, day after day, and not get into conversation with someone along the way unless the walk is in the woods.

But back to how we can help others who cannot help themselves. It seems to me that one of the greatest compliments one human can give to another is the willingness to listen. This may sound easier than it really is. Many people practice mindfulness, being in the moment, meditation and so forth for their own enrichment. In order to listen to another person, to really hear them, one has to practice that skill too, until it becomes almost an art.

We who live in our small villages, where people have more opportunity to connect with neighbors in the supermarket or at concerts or school baseball games, we are lucky enough, if we are so interested, to be available to listen to each other.

We can learn when we listen. And for the lonely, genuinely being heard is a balm.
