EPA ignores environmental impacts on LI Sound

By Donna newman donna@tbrnewspapers.com New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced Dec. 6 he will make good on his promise to sue the Environmental Protection Agency.

“As I have said time and again, New York is deeply concerned with the EPA’s efforts to designate a permanent dumping site in the eastern part of the Long Island Sound,” Cuomo said in a statement. “Continuing to use this precious economic and ecological resource as a dumping ground is unacceptable and — on behalf of current and future generations of New Yorkers — we intend to fight this decision using any and all legal means.”

Environmentalists and lawmakers are pleased with Cuomo’s stance. “[The] EPA’s expansion of dumping in the LI Sound is a reckless plan that will damage this estuary,” Citizens Campaign for the Environment Executive Director Adrienne Esposito said. “[It] is an ecological gem that should not to be used as a dump site … an extension of our backyards; a beloved waterway … We are immensely grateful for Governor Cuomo’s continued commitment to protect and restore our waters:

he is a true water warrior.”

State lawmakers joined forces Aug. 4 at Sunken Meadow State Park to issue a bipartisan ultimatum to both the federal government and the EPA regarding the dumping of dredged sludge in the LI Sound. Cuomo warned President Barack Obama (D) and the EPA that the plan to create a new disposal site poses a “major” threat to the ecologically vital habitat and blocks progress to end open-water dumping in Long Island waters.

In 2005, the EPA struck an accord with the governors of New York and Connecticut to reduce or limit the disposal of dredged material in the sound by examining alternative placement practices, according to State Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket).

However, the EPA has not honored this agreement, and in August, moved forward with approving an additional long-term dumpsite at the eastern end of LI Sound, 2.3 nautical miles northwest of Fisher’s Island.

A spokesperson for EPA Region 1 offered the agency’s position.

“Our recent decision to establish the Eastern Long Island Sound Dredged Material Disposal Site is based on sound science, reflects extensive public input, and balances

the need for dredging to maintain safe navigation, while also protecting the beauty and vitality of Long Island Sound,” the spokesperson, who asked not to be named, said in an email. “In our designation for the ELDS, EPA incorporated site protections and use restrictions that are similar to what were established for the Central and Western … Sites earlier in 2016.”

Environmentalists and state officials have since called upon Cuomo to follow through on his threat to sue. A letter from Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward Romaine (R) and signed by all town council members cited the deficiencies in the Dredged Material Management Plan drafted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and urged the governor to pursue his plan.

“We strongly urge you to do all in your power, including litigation, to force the federal government to live up to its promise ten years ago to reduce or eliminate the dumping of dredge spoil into the waters of the Long Island Sound,” Romaine said.

Hearing the governor’s decision, Englebright was encouraged.

“Thank you to Governor Cuomo for taking a stand against the EPA decision,” he said. “If New

Setauket Harbor Task Force spokesman George Hoffman said, “It’s good news to hear that our governor is standing as a strong partner with the environmental community in opposing the EPA’s expansion of dredge dumping in the LI Sound.

“Still, it is a sad day when NYS State has to sue the EPA to get them to rethink this archaic and environmental damaging method of disposing of dredge spoils. It may be cheaper today, but it will cost us dearly in the health of the LI Sound tomorrow.”

L. Ross-Harrington Foundation holds fundraiser at Bliss

By DougLAS M. HARRington Shortly before Thanksgiving friends, family and former Three Village school district colleagues gathered at Bliss Restaurant in Setauket for a cocktail party fundraiser in support of the Linda Ross-Harrington Foundation.

It was formed in 2014 by her children, Jack and Sterling Harrington and daughter-in-law Sarah, in memory of Three Village ESL (English as a second language) teacher Linda Ross-Harrington. She lost her battle with cancer in 1996 at the age of 40.

Ross-Harrington helped craft the original ESL program in the Three Village school district and taught all grades from elementary through high school during her 13-year tenure, traveling daily throughout the district from school to school.

emptions in the town. Ryan said the town is still trying to determine the legislation’s financial effects for each school district that opts in.

In a letter sent to the town’s school districts, Ryan stated that districts must pass a resolution on or before March 1 in order for the exemption to affect the December 2014 tax bill. Among the school districts considering opting in are Kings Park and Middle Country — Rocky Point already opted in — after discussing the legislation at recent board of education meetings.

Kings Park Superintendent Susan Agruso said if the district grants the exemption, an average homeowner with an assessed value of $6,000 could see a tax increase of about $82. According to the Smithtown Town tax assessor’s office, Agruso said, there are 601 residences with veterans in Kings Park.

While both the Kings Park and Middle Country school boards decided to hold future public hearings on the matter, the Rocky Point Board of Education did

not, but voted to opt in at a school board meeting on Jan. 13.

According to Jennifer Kuefner, of the district’s public relations firm, Syntax, the district’s legal council said the school board meeting served as a public hearing since the item was on the agenda and residents had the chance to comment.

In an email, Kuefner said, “While the district is awaiting final statistics from the Town of Brookhaven, it cannot think of a more worthy group to receive this exemption — an exemption which they are already receiving from other taxing jurisdictions.”

Englebright said while he understands that school districts may be hesitant to cut back on much-needed taxes in hard economic times, the law shows a “meaningful appreciation” for veterans’ sacrifices. “It is a worthwhile and worthy initiative,” he said. “Not one that should be dismissed … just because we are in difficult times.”

At about 5 a.m. Nov. 30, a 37-year-old man was found sleeping in a vacant building on Perry Street in Port Jefferson without permission, according to police.

When questioned, he gave police a fake name and also possessed prescription medication without a valid prescription, police said. He also attempted to flee on foot during the arrest. He was charged with third-degree criminal trespassing, false personation, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. A 34-year-old woman from Coram was also sleeping in a vacant building on Perry Street on the same date at about the same time, police said. She was arrested and charged with thirddegree criminal trespassing. At about 6 a.m., a 56-year-old man from Central Islip was found sleeping in a vacant building on Perry Street without permission, police said. He was also arrested and charged with third-degree criminal trespassing. Police would not confirm if any of the three charged were in the same building.

Tyler Holiday shopping at the local stores that help give our historic communities a sense of place just makes good sense. The upcoming Christmas and winter holiday are also good times to purchase a few of the wonderful gifts and books about the local area and to pay a relaxing visit to a few local not-for-profit shops that deserve our special support.

For one, consider the Three Village Historical Society Gift Shop, 93 North Country Road, Setauket.

The society’s gift shop was expanded to complement the exhibit “SPIES! How a Group of Long Island Patriots Helped George Washington Win the Revolution.”

There you will find gifts including many books, booklets and pamphlets on local history.

A local favorite is “General Washington’s Commando: Benjamin Tallmadge in the Revolutionary War” by Richard F. Welch. I already knew a lot about Tallmadge but I couldn’t put Welch’s book down. It’s well-researched, well-organized and interesting.

Other books of note include “Washington’s Spies: The Story of America’s First Spy Ring” by Alexander Rose. Rose is the consultant for the AMC series “TURN,” which is a dramatization of the Setauketbased Culper Spy Ring.

“Upon Secrecy” by Selene Castrovilla, is an engaging book that will delight both children and adults. Castrovilla’s writing brings the Revolutionary War to life as it carries us into the actions of the Long Island-based Culper spy operation. This story will keep you on the edge of your seat as the spy letters move from Manhattan to Setauket and across Long Island Sound to Washington’s headquarters.

“Revolutionary Friends: General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette”

by Selene Castrovilla is a delightfully illustrated book that brings into focus the relationship between Washington and Lafayette.

Lafayette’s own words, inset throughout the book, are a real delight and add to an understanding of the marquis’s relationship to both Washington and America. At the back of the book are time lines, for both Lafayette and Washington, plus a list of recommended places to visit connected with Lafayette and Washington, as well as details on Lafayette’s legacy in America. Everyone of every age should read this moving account of an American treasure.

Gallery North, 90 North Country Road, Setauket, is located diagonally across the street from the historical society. It is very easy to park at one and walk across the street to the other. The entire gallery is a gift shop with many wonderful paintings and gift pieces by local artists for sale. The

current exhibit is Deck the Halls: Local artists and artisans have created beautiful paintings, drawings, handmade jewelry, pottery, glass, decorations, bags, cards and much more.

The Reboli Center, 64 Main Street, Stony Brook, located in the former bank building just opposite Stony Brook Village, opened to the public on Friday, Nov. 25.

On display is a sizable collection of wonderful paintings by Joe Reboli.

The gift shop in the Reboli Center includes artwork by Doug Reina, Jim Molloy and Pam Brown as well as David Ebner furniture and unique items from a variety of artists. Stop in and see all this gift shop has to offer. The St. James General Store, 516 Moriches Road, St. James, is an “old-fashioned” general store. Not technically a notfor-profit, it is run for the benefit of Suffolk residents through the Suffolk County Parks Department as a part of Historical Services.

There are two floors of 19th- and 20thcentury goods and lots of homemade goodies. They have an extensive collection of old-style candies, many dating back to the 19th century. Be sure to also try one of their delicious molasses pops.

On the second floor are books on Long Island covering many local communities, as well as lots of wonderful children’s books. This is now one good, close independent bookstore.

The back room has an extensive collection of ornaments, some of which are reproductions of antique decorations.

Back on the first floor there is a large selection of toys, dolls and games for children that also harken back to the 19th century.

The St. James General Store is open every day 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 631-854-3740.

There are lots of unusual gifts at these three gift shops. You will almost certainly find something to suit every taste.

There are many other wonderful local shops in the Stony Brook Village Shopping Center, in Setauket, and in the Village of Port Jefferson. (A special one in Port Jefferson is Secret Garden Tea Room on Main Street. Have a cup of tea, maybe a scone and jam or a delicious lunch and look over their selection of gifts.)

Finding a special or unusual gift is not only a good idea, it supports our local businesses as it brings us closer together as a community. And — you never know whom you might run into shopping locally.

High accolades for Gelinas Science Chair Gary Vorwald P.J. Gelinas Junior High School science teacher and department chairperson Gary Vorwald has been named a 2016 STANYS Fellow by the Science Teachers Association of New York State.

STANYS Fellows are recognized as outstanding classroom teachers and leaders of science students who have notably contributed to science education at both the local and state levels. The distinction is bestowed on individuals who have distinguished themselves through effective teaching and active participation in professional scientific organizations and service to STANYS. Their leadership and scholarly endeavors to science education are considered noteworthy and inspirational to their

peers, as this is the highest honor bestowed upon a science teacher by his or her New York State colleagues.

Vorwald has taught in the district since 1998 and has been an educator for 30 years. During his time in Three Village, he has taught nearly every science course offered at P.J. Gelinas and is also the school’s lead coach of its award-winning Science Olympiad team.

He most recently led Gelinas’ Science Olympiad team to earn a 10th place ranking during the 2016 National Science Olympiad competition.

In addition to these accolades, Vorwald was previously named a New York State Master Teacher.

Patricia Ann (Ewald) Schuchman, 85, passed away Nov. 23 in Setauket.

Pat possessed a vibrant intellect, a strong faith and a warm heart. She graduated from Bushwick High School and attended St. John’s University on a full scholarship.

In 1959 she met the love of her life, Joseph Schuchman.

They married in 1961, and eventually settled in Setauket.

After raising their children, Pat returned to work, first at Hanson Publishing, then at The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook where she served as the director of public affairs when she retired in 1998.

Patricia is survived by her devoted husband, Joseph. She was a loving mother to her children, Elizabeth and Michael Gialanella, Margaret and Christopher Still, Joseph and Patricia, Anne and James Berrettini, John and Christine Rit-

ter and Peter and Amy; beloved sister of Frederick and Beryl, Thomas and Karen and Madeleine and Sandy; devoted aunt to many nieces and nephews; and doting grandma to 16 grandchildren.

Pat was a longtime parishioner of St. James R.C. Church in Setauket, where she taught religious education for 30 years and served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was also an active volunteer for Cub Scouts, League of Women Voters, and Meals on Wheels. A voracious reader, she was often found with a book in her hands, and instilled a love of reading and learning in her children. The world is a better place because of her wit, humor and love.

Her family requests donations in her name to either the Lewy Body Dementia Association or Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson.

Lessons of Pearl Harbor

By RicH AcRitelli “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with terrible resolve.”

Japanese Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku, the architect of the attacks on Pearl Harbor 75 years ago, supposedly uttered these words as he assessed the immediate aftermath of Dec. 7, 1941. Up until Japan attacked, most Americans still subscribed to the popular sentiment of remaining out of the conflict, inspired by the words of Charles Lindbergh — “America first.” The America First Committee openly resented any notion that the United States should prepare for war. Even the first peacetime draft conducted in 1940 that expanded the military forces received stiff anti-war congressional opposition. While German tanks easily invaded France and later pushed through the Soviet Union, officers like Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar N. Bradley and George S. Patton still saw the cavalry play a major role within the mobility of the Army. All of this changed when Japanese fighter planes swarmed into Hawaii and attacked the air, naval and Army bases that manned the “jewel” of our forces in the Pacific Ocean.

When word of the attack spread to Washington, D.C., Secretary of State Cordell Hull was in the midst of negotiating with his Japanese counterpart. After a couple of choice words for the diplomat, the nation was rapidly placed on track for war. Within seconds, Americans were on lines blocks long to enter the service. President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the nation with his “Day of Infamy” speech that was adopted as a rallying cry by American citizens to defeat the Axis powers. Unlike the political gridlock seen today, Roosevelt’s words were accepted without reservation, and supporters and opponents of the president’s New Deal listened to the beloved leader. The “sleeping giant” of productivity, strength and endurance was awakened to defeat a global enemy. Prominent baseball players like Yogi Berra, Bob Feller, Ted Williams, Hank Greenberg and Yankee Manager Ralph Houk hung up their uniforms during the prime of their careers to support the war effort. By the end of 1942, the size of the U.S. armed forces had doubled from the previous year. The enthusiasm could be traced to a commitment to avenge Pearl Harbor and defeat Hitler and the Nazis.

Americans today do not realize how close the Allies came to losing the war.

Although the U.S. government was fully committed to fighting and helping its allies, America had a steep learning curve in teaching its young men the ways of modern warfare. The Japanese crippled America’s naval forces and Hitler looked unstoppable in Europe, but Roosevelt promised armed forces would be fighting the enemy in the Pacific and in North Africa before the close of 1942. Americans were drafted so quickly into the military that there were not enough uniforms, weapons, tanks or trucks for them to utilize for their training. Longtime Wading River resident Michael O’Shea, who passed away in 2009, was a navigator in a B-17 Flying Fortress and experienced the earliest aspects of the war efforts.

The New York City kid watched Yankee games and attended Stuyvesant High School. Like other young men, O’Shea was horrified by the attack on Pearl Harbor and wanted to forgo his senior year to enter the military. His parents were adamant that he finish high school before enlisting. As a young recruit into the Army Air Force, O’Shea for a brief time was stationed in Atlantic City, N.J. He was not issued a uniform, did not have many knowledgeable instructors, and the lack of heat in the military housing made people sick.

The local resident flew 24 combat missions and had the rare experience of being shot down twice over Europe. He was later imprisoned in Stalag Luft III, the same camp depicted in the film “The Great Escape.”

In the spring of 1945, Patton’s Third Army liberated O’Shea. He was present to see the noted armored general speak to all of the freed Americans. O’Shea was a good friend to Rocky Point High School, where he was a proud representative of the “Greatest Generation” and spoke about his crusade against totalitarian powers.

It was 75 years ago that America was propelled into a war it did not choose, but the people worked together and completely sacrificed for the safety and security of a thankful nation. Citizens like O’Shea, without hesitation, risked their lives for the wellbeing of the country. On this Pearl Harbor anniversary, may we never forget those men and women who were lost and wounded in the defense of this nation and continue to do so today at home and abroad.

By Bill landon Returning senior Kenny Cracchiola’s said with a mix of first-year varsity wrestlers added to his Ward Melville wrestling team, coupled All-County and league champions at its core, his confidence in his Patriots has never been higher.

“This is my fourth year on varsity and honestly, this is the best overall team we’ve had, and I think with this year’s team we can knock off [some] of the top teams in the county,” said the four-year started, who is closing in on 100 varsity wins, despite the team losing two county champions to graduation last year. “We lost to Brentwood the last couple of years, but if we could take down Brentwood, that would send a message.”

Cracchiola will be joined by classmate Sean Fitzsimons, who is in his second year

at the varsity level and is a returning league finalist and an All-County competitor.

Fitzsimons said the feel and mentality in the practice room has changed this year.

“I feel that we all have something to prove this year — I think some of the other teams are brushing us off and we’ll be looking to knock off a few big names this year,” Fitzsimons said.

The Patriots finished last season 3-3 and are looking to make a splash in League I under first-year head coach Garrett Schnettler.

“There are three teams that are ranked in the county who are ahead of us in our league — Brentwood, Sachem East and Patchogue-Medford — so those are three teams we’d like to go after,” Schnettler said. “We were beaten by those three last year pretty convincingly, but this year we have a really deep team at every weight

The Three Village Garden Club holds its annual greenery sale at the Neighborhood House on the same weekend as the Three Village Historical Society’s Candlelight House Tour.

This year, the historic homes were all within walking distance of the sale, which added to the festive feel.

Karin Ryon, vice president of the garden club and coordinator of the greenery sale, said it is the club’s big fundraiser of the year.

“It’s fabulous,” she said. “Everyone did a wonderful job. We have quite a bit of talent

going on — even aside from the greenery.”

Handmade ornaments were also for sale.

Other items included 80 tabletop arrangements, 52 wreaths, “kissing” balls, crafts and the very popular small tabletop trees.

Garden club members June Sehlmeyer, of Mount Sinai, and Joan Roehrig, of East Setauket, greeted shoppers on the morning of Nov. 4 wearing Dickensian garb. The two said they would be heading to Port Jefferson to portray characters at the annual Dickens Festival later in the day.

Holiday Festival in Stony Brook Village draws a crowd A magical event kicks off ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ An authentic Stony Brook Village tradition gets handed down from generation to generation as people gather to officially welcome the Christmas season.

Stony Brook Village supplied a day of festivities and fun Dec. 4, culminating in a community tree lighting, where Santa and his helpers flip the switch.

Residents who, as children, were awed by the experience, now bring their own children and grandchildren. The Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Facilities Supervisor Mike Colucci believes the good weather brought hundreds to the event.

“This is my 21st holiday festival for the Ward Melville Heritage Organization,” Colucci said, “and I’ve never seen so many people on the green for a tree lighting.”

It was a perfect night for carollers — and other things. A display of electric trains enthralled young and old alike. Under the direction of WMHO Education Director Deborah Boudreau and colleague Bill Manley, the Youth Corps presented a theatrical performance based on an Edward Lapham short story titled “Forgotten Christmas, 1814.” It’s a tale of Stony Brook ne’er-do-well Captain Mark Waterbury, who saves the day — in all three performances.

Individuals and groups decorated the promenade of holiday trees that runs throughout the village — with creators vying for a $150 Stony Brook Village gift certificate as they raise funds for local families in need.

Pearl Harbor: A turning point for America There are moments in American history that change the course of our democracy, and our lives. Several have come out of a clear blue morning sky.

Dec. 7, 1941 in Hawaii began with just such a morning..

But it was not just “a date that will live in infamy,” in the words of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (D), which he used to begin a speech to Congress and the American people the day after the surprise bombing on the naval base at Pearl Harbor. It was also a day that marked a major transition for the United States of America.

“I think December 7, 1941, is perhaps the most important day in American history,” Paul Sparrow, director of the FDR Library in Hyde Park said in an interview aired on CBS Sunday Morning television last weekend. “It is the transition day when we shifted from being an isolationist nation to being a global superpower.”

Roosevelt initially did his best to keep the country out of World War II. The Great Depression had taken a toll on the American people, and the memory of the destruction and lives lost in World War I still lingered.

When faced with the destruction of an entire fleet of aircraft carriers docked in Pearl Harbor — and the fighter planes that they were meant to deploy — Roosevelt knew he had to make a swift and decisive response to an attack he called “unprovoked and dastardly.”

Roosevelt’s rallying cry was met with an immediate response from a unified and committed nation. America retooled, fought and took on a leadership role in the world it has maintained ever since.

Seventy-five years later, we might be experiencing another total policy realignment. Will the new administration, with its Americafirst doctrine, lead us back to pre-Pearl Harbor isolationism? One of the most important parts of American tradition since 1941 is our willingness to lend a hand to other countries and support them.

Though it remains to be seen what values our new commander in chief will maintain, we must not forget our history.

Everything in my power within the law I follow your letters to the editor faithfully and must say I was shocked by the vitriolic, vicious, distorted letter of Ronald Stelzer (“Reverend: America has spoken, and enough is enough,” Dec. 1), a “man of the cloth.”

When he eloquently described a person whose “corruption, mendacity and bloodstained hands … fraught with

fraud and fomenting divisiveness, chaos and revolution,” I thought that he was describing our president-elect.

I would add to this list, racism, misogyny, superficiality, dangerous impulsiveness and outright ignorance.

I shudder to think that such a person will have the nuclear codes at his disposal.

I fear for this country and will do everything within my power within the law to oppose any policies of the next administration that will endanger the people of this country and our much fought for democracy.

A different view of the Black Lives Matter rally I would like to comment on the article titled “Black Lives Matter rally on LI demands unity, action” published Nov. 17.

I observed the “rally” for myself that day and found that it was far from “unifying.” The first chant the group engaged in was “No justice, no peace, we don’t need no Suffolk Police.” Considering I was observing the Suffolk Police acting in a professional manner ensuring the marchers’ safety while they exercised their right to protest, I was somewhat surprised. This chant seemed out-of-place and entirely inappropriate. I also observed a woman holding a sign that read “white silence kills” and couldn’t help but wonder if this person has any idea who is responsible for the recent gang violence in Brentwood or shootings in Wyandanch. Rest assured it has not been attributed to “white silence.”

I continued to watch as the police stopped traffic so the marchers could safely navigate the busy Saturday morning traffic and thought to myself, “I wonder how many of these marchers realize that Black Lives Matter is an anti-police group, based on inaccurate information and outright lies” (the since disproven story of Michael Brown being shot with his hands up).

While some may be quick to defend Black Lives Matter, I find their own words speak volumes.

The Village Times Herald quotes a member of their group named Marcus Brown stating, “Black Lives Matter does not concede the police and the black community as having mutual interest. We believe that our interest is fundamentally antagonistic to the police in this country whose social function is to maintain racial order at the expense of black people.”

Really? I don’t think statements like that are constructive and do not seem like the type of attitude that seeks “unity” at all.

Another quote in the article was from marcher Mark Jacket of a group called Building Bridges.

Does Mr. Jacket think a group that states they are “fundamentally antagonistic to the police in this country’” is the kind of group that is looking to “build bridges”?

Based on everything I observed that day and read in the Village Times Herald, I think the answer is a resounding no.

I suggest that those who choose to participate in support of Black Lives Matter think about what it means to truly be inclusive and unifying before they engage in this type of divisive march. Our community deserves better.

opinion The day our kids bend down to look us in the eye

T

he first time we hold them, they fit into the corner of our arms with room to spare. Their impossibly small pink toes fit neatly in our eyelids as we kiss their wiggling feet.

We lower their grocery-sack-sized bodies gently into their cribs.

During the day we bring food to their toothless mouths, and their bodies process the food as they take what they need and leave the rest for us to clean and remove.

Suddenly they are coasting,

we rush to the floor near them and congratulate them. Before long we’re bending down, gently holding tiny hands engulfed in our oven-mitt-sized palms.

From their first walking steps, they progress to trotting. It’s a wonderful yet terrible transition, as their developing minds can’t process dangers at the same rate that their feet propel them.

We keep up or race ahead, making sure they don’t step off a curb until all movement on the street has stopped.

They no longer want to sit in the car seat. They arch backs that are shorter than our arms, making it impossible to buckle them in. We distract them enough to close the clasps, run to the front seat and bring the car to a high enough speed that they sleep.

We take them roller skating, skiing or ice skating. We start them early so they’ll become naturals. Brilliant idea, except that they need us to put our hands under their armpits to keep them upright. After a time far too short

for our kids’ liking, our backs scream to stop. We can’t bend down or our spines will go on strike. At that point, these small people want hot chocolate or the chance to try skiing, snowboarding or rollerblading on their own.

We stand on a field, tossing a ball lightly near their gloves. They throw the ball back in our general direction, discouraged that they haven’t discovered the magic of a catch. We get down on one knee, look them in the eye, pull up their small chins and smile, hoping we can teach the mechanics of throwing before they become too upset to keep trying.

We protect their heads from colliding with the tops of tables, reach for glasses from the cabinet, and help them into the seats at restaurants where their feet dangle far from the floor.

Pretty soon, they want to ride a bike. We promise to hold on but our backs, yet again, have other ideas.

They shout at us for letting go or,

maybe, they decide they want to do it on their own because they saw Timmy down the street on his bike.

Their faces, arms and legs get longer, they pick up speed everywhere they go and, before long, their heads are above the level of the kitchen table.

They reach down to pet the neighbors’ big dog, and they sit in restaurant chairs with enormous feet that rest on the floor and which we wouldn’t dare put anywhere near our eyelids.

We no longer have to bend our necks to kiss the tops of their heads.

In fact, with their braces gleaming in the sun, they stare or glare from under the long hair of adolescence directly into our eyes. Pretty soon we hope, as we go to sleep each night, they will be taller than we are.

Wonderful as that moment is, maybe — just for an instant — we remember that the head perched atop this growing body is the same one that fit so snugly into our arms all those years ago.

No humbug at Port Jeff’s Dickens festival, just cheer and comfort

his is a big THANK YOU to the Village of Port Jefferson and all those who worked hard to transform the village into the Charles Dickens Festival. For the 21st year in a row, the seaside village came to life in the time of Dickens, with decorations, lights, greenery and especially costumed characters roaming the streets and welcoming visitors. This year, a second THANK YOU for naming us, Times Beacon Record News Media, the honoree for the event.

Dunaief weekend was a thrill, for us and for the thousands of people who chatted with the characters, shopped in the many varied stores, ate in the wide selection of restaurants, rode in the horse-drawn carriage, enjoyed the festival of trees and took in the harbor views. How do I know? I asked the festivalgoers, because I was there every day from Thursday to Sunday,

and they told me how they decided to come into the village. Some came from Connecticut, enthusiastic about the magical event because they had visited before and knew of the many fun activities. It also helped that Port Jefferson ferry general manager, Fred Hall, offered a two-for-one price special during the weekend. The 10:30 a.m. boat on Saturday morning had 300 walk-ons alone, and they came without cars so no parking problems, and they had money in their pockets to spend for a good time. And people came from towns to the east and west, responding to the publicity and reputation surrounding the annual fantasy on the Long Island Sound.

Everyone might take the festival for granted after all these years, but I know how it came about because I was also there at the beginning. It was the brainchild of Jeanne Garant, the mayor at the time and mother of the present mayor, Margot Garant. Jeanne, a woman of vision, wanted the many organizations and groups to come together and work as a whole on a project to strengthen the sense of community and to celebrate the village. And she figured it wouldn’t hurt if the project helped the local businesses. So the first weekend in December was designated

as the ideal time to capture some of the holiday shopping, and the theme was to be the Dickens stories and characters, who would come alive during those couple of days. And so it happened.

This was no small project to get the organizers’ arms around. Among those invited to offer their talents and to hold special events was the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council, which would become the managing body alongside Port Jefferson Village, the historical society, the school district, the churches, various cultural paeans like Theatre Three (“A Christmas Carol”) and Harbor Ballet Theatre (“The Nutcracker”), the chamber of commerce and the civics, the constables, the ferry company, music groups, the harbormaster, the individual businesses and the residents just for starters. Events were designed for all age groups.

Eventually the Currier & Ives-like ice skating rink — another Jeanne Garant idea — joined the enchanting picture.

And a special THANK YOU to nationally famed and charming confection artist, Pat Darling, for once again creating the whimsical Santa’s Workshop in the historic Drowned Meadow Cottage on West Broadway.

and this past weekend Mrs. Cratchit’s Colorful Christmas Crafts was one such in the Village Center, along with an expanded Festival of Trees that each sponsor creatively decorated.

Port Jefferson Village was rich with events running through Saturday and Sunday. Indeed, it required more than two full pages in our Official Festival Guide just to list them in their many different locations hosted by the various community groups. So the original vision of a unified village has once again been realized. And the businesses were delighted with the results. “Never had an empty table all weekend,” one restaurateur said. “Shoppers buying all afternoon,” a jewelry store owner said.

Dickensian pleasure will go on throughout December this year, with the decorations and specials. And I would like to end on a personal note.

I have watched countless parades in my lifetime as a child, a mother and a grandmother, but until this weekend, I had never been on a parade float. As the honoree of the Dickens weekend, I got to ride atop the ferry float and to wave at the thousands of people and shower them with (artificial) snow as they waved back, calling out greetings.

What fun! We are deeply honored to have been appreciated in this way.
