Three Village Girl Scouts Raise Funds with Handmade Wreaths

Three local Girl Scouts have turned their Silver Award project into a continuous act of giving.

Caroline Woo, Mia Cottone and Abbi Sasson, all from Troop 551, decided for their Silver Award project that they would build birdhouses for the patients at Stony Brook Cancer Center.

Because the project was involved, and would take some time, the girls decided while their project was in the works they would lift patients’ spirits with handmade wreaths.

The group learned the craft from Carmen Tornos, a professor with the Renaissance School of Medicine, and the completed decorations were hung in the common patient areas. After a few months, the hospital held a raffle for the wreaths to help raise money for the center.

The three said they enjoyed designing the wreaths so much that they decided to continue making them to raise money for the nonprofit Room4Love based in East Setauket, which provides bedroom makeovers for children with cancer.

The girls, who are all ninth-graders at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School, said the Silver Award project, where each Scout must create something that can have a lasting impact, requires Scouts to put in 50 hours of service.

In addition to the birdhouses and wreaths, the girls put together goody bags for the patients and handed out birdseed for them to go outside, feed the birds and get some fresh air. The three said they chose the cancer center to help older patients, who are sometimes overlooked.

“We really learned that just little things can make a lasting impact on people’s lives,” Abbi said.

The other girls agreed.

“Even the small things that you don’t think matter to anyone, they do matter to a lot of people,” Caroline said.

The Girls Scouts said their parents have been a big help in providing materials for the wreaths, which they have been making all year round for every season. When it comes to Room4Love, the girls have been making the decorations for the nonprofit to raffle off, or they create them for family and friends who in turn donate to the organization. Mia was already familiar with Room4Love, which was started by her cousins, Maggie and Bella Diehl, eight years ago.

“It’s a good organization, and it helps a lot of kids,” Mia said.

Girl Scout Leader Sonya Cottone, Mia’s mother, said that she and co-leader Anne Hansen-Crowley are proud of the girls, who are willing to help out as much as they can.

“It makes us really proud, and we feel lucky to have a great group of kids,” she said.

Lucy Diehl, from Room4Love, said her daughters Maggie and Bella, despite being away at college, are still actively running the nonprofit, and she said all of them are humbled and grateful for all the support those in the Three Village area have given.

She added she’s not surprised that young people like the Girl Scouts are helping out.

“We live in a really good community that is always looking to give and looking to help, and certainly these kids, by making these wreaths, are doing just that,” Diehl said.

Eydie Woo, Caroline’s mother, said she credits the Girl Scouts for laying down good values for her daughter and friends. She said while the girls didn’t work directly with the patients, they did tour the hospital and saw the pediatric side, as well as the adult side, which had an impact on them.

“They’ve realized how fortunate they are, and that they’re able to do things like that and give back because there are kids who are really sick and they want to help them,” she said.

As for a large project such as the Silver Award, the girls had some advice to share.

“Even if it seems like getting started

is hard, once you get in, you see just how rewarding and how almost eye-opening it is to realize the impact of what you can have on the

world,” Abbi said.

Behnke Runs Unopposed for Stony Brook Fire Commissioner

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM A longtime Three Village resident is running unopposed Dec. 10 for his fourth fiveyear term as Stony Brook fire commissioner.

Ernest Behnke, 62, has been serving as a fire commissioner in Stony Brook for 15 years and began volunteering with the department in 1999. The 33-year resident of Stony Brook, who has lived in the Three Village area since 1966, said he originally wanted to volunteer sooner but didn’t have the time. However, when he began to work closer to home in Smithtown as its Highway Department’s general foreman, he finally was able to volunteer. In addition to his job and fire district duties, Behnke and his wife, Lisa, have seven children, with the two youngest attending Ward Melville High School.

“Like most volunteers, I joined to help serve the community as I had seen firsthand the caring and dedication of strangers helping strangers,” he said in an email, adding he also joined shortly after his father’s passing.

of with his fellow commissioners over the last few years, a board he said has a good working relationship.

“We had entered into the real world of the new volunteer service — 24/7 paid EMT ambulance crews,” he said. “A decision that was not an easy one, but we must serve the public with the best means possible. We are

still evolving the program to assure that we can provide coverage and also keep the costs reasonable.”

He said the board tries “to balance between members and the taxpaying public.” The past year, in addition to hiring EMTs and advanced life support providers, the district has commissioned two new pumpers, updated its communications system, purchased a new chief’s car, upgraded its sprinkler system and renovated its meeting room at Station 2.

“We fell within the 2 percent tax cap, and we were able to return to the taxpayers a reduction of $100,000 out of our operating budget resulting in a zero increase,” he said.

The commissioner said the district is unique in that Stony Brook University and other institutions such as churches and schools, which together make up 50 percent of the assessed valuation that is off the tax rolls, fall within its perimeters.

“That leaves a burden to the residents, that we receive no compensation from the state,” he said. “A large area that we have to protect.

When it comes to the role of commissioner, Behnke said the district is not only using tax money to pay the bills, but also to “provide

the community with the best firefighting and rescue equipment.”

He added that commissioners are involved with making policies and hiring personnel, including the chief of the department. They also ensure funds for the Length of Service Award Program, also known as LOSAP, a pensionlike program for volunteers, are available without being a burden to taxpayers.

One of the things Behnke said he is proud of during his 15 years as commissioner is being involved in implementing the Explorer program in Stony Brook.

“I was able to change the district’s by-laws by lowering the age that you can join at 17 after they complete the program,” he said.

“We have had great success as many have joined and are a great asset to the department.”

Registered voters who live in the Stony Brook Fire District can vote Dec. 10 from 2 to 6 p.m. for fire commissioner for a fiveyear term that will begin Jan. 1. Those in the district who live north of the railroad right of way can vote at the firehouse located at 147 Main St. Those south of the railroad right of way can vote at the firehouse located at 1402 Stony Brook Road.

Church Hosts Annual Christmas Concert Stony Brook’s All Souls Episcopal Church will present its annual Christmas concert Dec.7 from 6 to 8 p.m. Recording artist Peter Griggs will present Christmas Around the World, a selection of traditional holiday music from Spain, France, Italy, Scandinavia, Portugal, America and the United Kingdom on guitar, laud, voice and a virtual ensemble of accordion, flute and percussion.

The free concert will begin promptly at 6 p.m. and refreshments will be served during intermission. The church collects food each week to help feed the hungry at the St. Cuthbert’s food pantry.

Attendees can donate a can of food if they want to help feed the hungry in the community.

For the sixth year, Emma S. Clark Memorial Library continues the annual Helen Stein Shack Picture Book Contest for junior high and high school students in Three Village Central School District.

The library is calling for teens who live in the school district to create an original children’s picture book using their own artwork and text.

The entries will be judged and winning authors will receive a monetary prize and have their work bound, made into a hardcover book and added to the library’s shelves. Additional copies of the winning books will also be available for purchase by family and friends.

Winners and their families will be invited to an awards ceremony in the spring. In the past, these awards ceremonies have been attended by library trustees, teachers and top school district administrators as well as representatives and elected officials from New York State, Suffolk County and the Town of Brookhaven, all on hand to honor the winners.

The contest is divided into two grade categories, grades 7-9 and grades 10-12, with one first-prize winner and one second-prize winner selected from each group. Each entry can be the work of a single author/illustrator or can be a joint effort between an author and an illustrator (in the event that a winning entry is a collaboration, the prize will be shared). Each of the first-prize award recipients will receive $400, and each of the second-prize award recipients will receive $100. All entrants

will receive a certificate of participation.

Teens may obtain an official entry form in person in the library’s lobby or online at www. emmaclark.org/picturebookaward.

Included with the form are the contest procedures and guidelines. They should bring their completed picture book, along with a completed official entry form, to the Children’s Department anytime between Jan. 2 and 31, 2020.

Last year’s grand prize winners were Nicole Xiao (grades 7-9 category) and Juliet Weschke (grades 10-12 category). The public may view previous year’s winning entries at www. emmaclark.org/picturebookaward.

This award is given in memory of Helen Stein Shack by her family. As a teacher, Shack was committed to the education of children, and she especially loved literature written for them.

She was a frequent visitor to Emma Clark library where, even in retirement, she kept current with the latest children’s books. The library is grateful to her children who have established a substantial endowment with the library to cover the ongoing cost of the prizes.

A maximum of one entry will be accepted per author. Entries may be a collaboration of no more than one author and one artist/illustrator. Emma Clark employees and trustees and their immediate family members are not eligible to enter.

Suffolk County police 6th Squad detectives are investigating a three-vehicle crash that seriously injured a woman in Stony Brook Nov. 20.

Mariana Debbe was driving a 2003 Honda Civic westbound on Route 347 when she attempted to make a left-hand turn onto southbound Nicolls Road at approximately 1:30 p.m. The Honda was struck by a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer being driven northbound on Nicolls Road by Deanna Lee Hermida. The Honda then struck a 2015 Toyota being driven

by Jose Salas that was heading eastbound on Route 347 and making a left turn to head

northbound on Nicolls Road.

Debbe, 26, of Miller Place, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Hermida, 23, of Ridge, was transported to the same hospital with minor injuries. Salas, 63, of Brentwood, was not injured.

All three vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the 6th Squad at 631-854-8652.

Police said a woman stole a vacuum, cosmetics and electronics from Target, located at 255 Pond Path, Nov.14. The merchandise was valued at approximately $800.

Celebrating Community

Members, friends and supporters of the Three Village Community Trust gathered for an all-star evening at the Old Field Club Nov. 13 for the trust’s 15th annual celebration. The guest speaker was Alan Inkles, director of the Staller Center for the Arts and founder and director of the Stony Brook Film Festival.

Inkles entertained the gathering with tales of the many trials and challenges in the early days of his career. An hour of fine jazz

was played by the Three Village Vanguard Quartet, featuring Tom Manuel, The Jazz Loft founder and president, and bassist Dean Johnson, guitarist Steve Salerno and Carl Safina, ecologist and author, on drums. Other highlights of the evening included a buffet provided by the Old Field Club, wine, ticket auction drawings for works by local artists and artisans and the raffle of an original watercolor, “Homage to Tillie,” by local artist

Eleanor Tyndall Meier.

The culmination of the affair was the drawing for “the big prize,” two tickets in a prime location to the Broadway musical “Hamilton” and a limousine ride to and from the theater. The prize winners were Barbara and Michael Russell, longtime supporters of the trust.

“We were thrilled to see so many friends and supporters at the event,” said Alice

D’Amico, chair of the celebration committee.

“This is our major fundraiser of the year, and it is critical to help support our preservation projects, especially this year when we are working on the restoration of both the Hawkins Homestead and the Smith-de Zafra House, as well as an update on the Patriots Hollow State Forest and the stewardship agreement negotiations with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.”

Young Environmentalists

Students from P. J. Gelinas Junior High School explored the tidal wetlands of Flax Pond and the surrounding shoreline during a field trip offered in the science research course.

Tidal wetlands are important ecosystems that serve to buffer the impact of storms on the coastline and help to filter harmful pollutants.

During the trip in Ken Weiner’s science research II course, students used a peat auger to core through the salt marsh to discover various layers. This enabled them to determine the rate of wetland growth that has occupied the area

for the past 2,000 years.

As part of their research, the students discovered firsthand how the different types of wetland vegetation is linked to elevation above sea level as well as other environmental changes that have occurred to this area. Some students operated a seine, allowing the class to identify different aquatic species and trends in the population. This trip is part of a series in which students in the science research courses at Three Village will increase their understanding of the local environment through hands-on activities.

Making the Pledge

Symbolizing their commitment to stay drug and alcohol free, secondary school students throughout the Three Village Central School District marked this year’s Red Ribbon Week through several initiatives.

Organized by district student assistance counselor Alison Herrschaft, the event aimed to bring awareness to the dangers of such negative behaviors and the importance of committing to a healthy lifestyle.

During Red Ribbon Week, tables were set up in the cafeterias at Ward Melville High School and R. C. Murphy and P. J. Gelinas junior high schools.

Students visited the displays to sign paper red ribbons and commit to leading a drug- and alcoholfree life. At Ward Melville, the members of the school’s SADD club helped to lead the initiative and shared facts and statistics to punctuate the importance of the topic. Each individual who signed received a red ribbon to wear.

Three Village Fundraiser Planned to Help Puerto Rico

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Many parts of Puerto Rico are still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Maria more than two years after the storm, and North Shore residents are lending a helping hand.

A salsa-dancing fundraiser will be held at The Bates House in East Setauket Dec. 8 to raise funds for The Ocean Foundation. The nonprofit works to support, strengthen and promote organizations dedicated to reversing the destruction of ocean environments.

“We’re helping to restore their natural barrier which has been devastated,” said Liz Kotseas, one of the event’s hosts and organizers.

Jason Donofrio, external relations officer of The Ocean Foundation, said the organization focuses on nature-based solutions, and all the proceeds from the event will go toward its sea grass growth program, which will help plant sea grass and restore mangrove forests in Jobos Bay, a federally protected estuary in Puerto Rico.

“They are sort of the island’s first line of defense,” he said.

Former Stony Brook University student Danny Rodriguez, who will also be hosting the event in part Dec. 8, inspired the idea when he organized a fundraiser at Stony Brook University’s Student Activities Center to raise money for Hurricane Maria victims in Puerto

Rico back in Nov. 2017. The initial fundraiser, like the Dec. 8 one, included salsa-dancing lessons and music.

Rodriguez, who lives in Mount Sinai and teaches Spanish at Longwood High School, said in 2017 that he wanted to travel to Puerto Rico, but his studies made it difficult to travel there.

“That’s what my heart really wanted to do,” he said.

With experience with fundraisers in the breakdancing world, and a dancer himself, he approached Aurelie Vialette, an associate professor and director of graduate studies at SBU, who helped him organize the 2017 SBU event. He said the only date available was right before Thanksgiving when many students were already leaving to go home for the holiday, but despite the bad timing, about three dozen attended and around $300 was raised.

“Everything came together on very short notice and all worked out pretty well,” he said.

Kotseas, a Setauket resident and a member of SBU’s Department of Linguistics, said she heard about the 2017 event through a flyer at the university and decided to bring her niece, Alexa Siragusa. The cause is personal for Kotseas as she has family in San Juan and Caguas, Puerto Rico. She said there are still many residents who haven’t fully recovered, including some who still have tarps on their roofs.

about holding one at a bigger venue in the future.

“I had the Three Villages in my mind,” Kotseas said. “I felt like we could gather a great group of people to support Puerto Rico.”

Rodriguez said he was glad Kotseas recommended the Three Village area after his dance students from On the Edge Performance Center in Port Jefferson, where he teaches, performed this summer at the Three Village Kids Lemonade Stand event, which raises money for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

Rodriguez said he was impressed with the

students’ success.

“I feel like this has the same type of potential to bring that same community together,” he said.

Donofrio said this was the first time someone has raised money for the foundation with a salsa dance fundraiser, adding that oftentimes people forget that Puerto Rico is part of the U.S. “This is not some war-torn country or some developing nation far across the world, this is U.S. territory,” he said. “So, I think how we respond to a community that is part of the U.S., that is in our own backyard, says a lot about us as Americans and what’s it like to live in the U.S.” Rodriquez credits Kotseas and Tammy Colletti, who will also host the fundraiser, for doing most of the work. Kotseas added that the Copiague-based Promise of Hope Foundation, which Colletti is co-founder of, made the event possible by sponsoring it. She said so far Pentimento Restaurant, Waverly Liquors and Olde Towne Gardens have provided food, cheer and services, respectively.

“The support from local businesses has been wonderful and really shows the generous spirit of our community,” Kotseas said.

Tickets for the salsa fundraiser are $75 each.

Local Boy Scouts from Troop 377 held a drive to help those in need. They donated the better part of a recent weekend to collect food and supplies to help fellow Three Village

students and their families and ultimately collected over 730 pounds of food which were donated to the R.C. Murphy Junior High School food pantry.

Jackie, Dominique, Joseph and Niko. Philip is also survived by his loving girlfriend, Christine Moffett, and her daughters. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Mary Irwin.

Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, Nov. 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Gerard Majella R.C. Church, Port Jefferson Station. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram.

Family Feasts Without Responding to a Rebuttal the Feuds

The pending impeachment proceedings of the 45th president of the United States means dinner table conversations this holiday season could get extra heated and dicey. So, it may be in everyone’s best interest to avoid breaching the topic, which risks exposing the passionate political leanings of loved ones.

So, what’s a family to do?

As the saying goes, you can’t pick your relatives. But you certainly can choose and encourage activities that bring people together rather than widen the divide. As you and your loved ones gather, equip yourself with a solid plan that keeps the peace.

Keep in mind, talking about the weather, once a light, safeharbor topic, could backfire. Discussing California wildfires, for example, could spark a fruitless debate over the scientific theories behind climate change. Knowing this tendency, if you see news footage of the flooding in St. Mark’s Square in Venice, Italy, you might want to quickly change the channel.

The first step in any successful endeavor is to set a realistic goal: Coming away from the weekend festivities without anyone suffering black eyes or bruised egos. The best option may in fact be: Eat in silence like monks. Other options, though, do exist.

One idea is to play a game. Try coming up with a new name for the country, one that drops the word “United” in the United States of America. To keep it democratic, go around the table allowing each person to suggest their own clever alternative.

Before or after dinner, you can also play the fast-paced word game Bananagrams, only conduct politics-themed rounds.

The entertaining activity allows for self-expression and could likely become a fair-minded approach to spending quality time together while eliminating tensions in the air. If it doesn’t? Hold a regulation wrestling match on the living room floor and keep score. Takedowns, reversals, near falls and escapes all count.

If tensions rise? Flip the bird. As in turkey. (Thanksgiving is the one day of the year that you can get away with this one.)

Music soothes the savage beast. So, stream it in. Or better yet, make your own. Form a drum circle using common household objects as percussion instruments. The ancient practice of striking rhythm together is known to alleviate isolation and alienation. But be sure to hide the good china from the tribe.

Building crafts can also be a fun and rewarding activity for family members. Martha Stewart built a dynasty, once she acknowledged this fundamental fact. Try building sock gnomes together. The blind, deaf and mute miniature humanoids can actually become an unexpected and perhaps even necessary source of inspiration for the crowd.

Instead of discussing politics, you might also try identifying the moral virtues of each of the world’s many different major religions.

On second thought, don’t do this.

You can also give thanks with everyone recounting their blessings out loud in turn. It may in fact be the wisest strategy and there’s likely plenty of material to go around.

Professor Arnold Wishnia had a letter in the Nov. 14 edition of The Village Times Herald [“Trump’s alternative universe”], in response to a previous letter from me, [“What Trump supporters believe in,” Oct. 17], in which I had outlined several of the many reasons why voters who supported President Donald Trump [R] in 2016 were likely to vote to reelect him in 2020.

The professor’s rebuttal included a number of disparaging remarks about the president, asserting that he “clearly despises the Constitution,” likes to see the children of immigrants “kidnapped and scattered God knows where,” and other similar claims conforming to the list of Democratic talking points.

Following his devastating attacks on the president, the good professor then turned his guns toward a statement from my Oct. 17 letter, which was as follows: “They recognize the great strides we have made in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, while at the same time

achieving energy independence, largely as a result of advances in the technology of fracking.” Although he did not actually express substantive disagreement with any part of this, Wishnia took the opportunity to falsely accuse me of being “a man who has, in this newspaper, first denied that warming and climate change were occurring, then that CO2 was accumulating, then falsely denying that industries were the major contributors to the undeniable, huge increase since about 1970.”

Nothing could be further from the truth, because I never said any of those things.

Whether he has difficulty understanding the contents of my letters, or whether he is deliberately misrepresenting them, I cannot say. It is true that I have expressed skepticism with regard to unproven claims of imminent disaster as a direct result of carbon dioxide emissions, as well as the wisdom of wrecking our economy by wasting trillions of dollars to produce a negligible result. However, I have never disputed the

fact that atmospheric carbon dioxide has increased from approximately 200 parts per million at the start of the Industrial Revolution to 325 ppm in 1970, and to 410 ppm in the present day. Nor have I disputed that most of this increase is attributable to industrial activity.

What I have questioned is the magnitude of the causal relationship between carbon dioxide and global warming, which has certainly not been definitively established. In my opinion, increased levels of carbon dioxide are likely to cause small, but manageable, increases in temperature, and it would be prudent to reduce these levels by using methodologies that are reasonable, cost effective and not prohibitively disruptive.

These methodologies include nuclear power, fracking, solar power and wind turbines. They do not include making false allegations about those who are trying to help.

Another Take on Words That Matter

L

ast year at this time, I wrote a column celebrating words. I feel compelled to share another homage this year. This may start a new annual tradition. I hope you enjoy.

Words dart away, just out of reach, like a fish in the ocean, a butterfly in a meadow or a Frisbee lifted overhead by a sudden breeze.

Words emanate from nearby, startling us while we lay in bed, coaxing D. None us to search the house, the closet, of the above the garage for the

Words give strength to our arguments, power to our convictions, and a method to share our

hopes, desperation, dreams, fears, needs, wants and cravings.

Individually and collectively, words enable us to invite others to share experiences.

Words form the backbone of a democracy always challenged by new words, concepts, people and ideas.

When we hold an infant, listen to the sound from the air leaving the lungs of a whale surfacing nearby or gaze from the top of a volcano at the rising sun over the horizon, we hope the words we choose to describe what we see, feel and experience bring us back to these magic moments.

Words grow into unmanageable bundles as jargon triggers a metamorphosis that confounds and clutters their meaning, turning them into a sesquipedalian mess — that is the practice of using long-winded, obscure words.

Words tell tales, show emotions and reach out across time from generations long since past, urging us to pay attention and learn lessons from those who came before.

We select rhyming words that sing like

chirping birds.

Words make us laugh, offering a salve to suffering and transportation out of intransigence.

When we can’t understand something, we name it, giving a word to the unknown that allows us to refer to something in the cosmos, in our minds or buried under our fingernails. Ancient Romans used words to construct fantastic stories about the stars, the heavens and the gods, who exhibited a wide range of emotions that seemed remarkably human.

We remember the words from our favorite movies: “May the force be with you” (“Star Wars”) and “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship” (“Casablanca”). And from our favorite presidents, such as John F. Kennedy’s “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country” (1961) or Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” (1933).

We carry with us the words that mean the most from our own lives. We don’t need to check them at the airport when we are in group 9, stuff them in an overstuffed backpack when we go to school

or keep them from getting waterlogged when the evapotranspiration cycle decides to dump rain, sleet, hail or snow upon us. We remember the person so critical to our existence that he or she “ruined us for all other” men or women.

The words that elevate, inspire and encourage us to do and be our best allow us to stand straighter and taller, enabling us to wear a cryptic smile that those who know us best perceive immediately.

Words give us hope, help us believe in ourselves and allow us to feel connected to someone halfway across the world.

We pause from uttering words during moments of silence, as we pay respect with the unspoken words in our minds.

We are surrounded by paper thin walls of meaningless, angry, spiteful, hateful words. We can combat those messages with words that reflect the best of us and our country. Words fill the toolbox with the parts to build the world as we choose.

As you ponder words that matter at this time of year, I’d like to wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving.

Lots of Tradition and No Disappointment at Our Thanksgiving Table

T

hanksgiving 2019. Always a favorite holiday for me. What could be bad about an eating holiday? Even better, it’s a chance to see my children and grandchildren, because everyone comes to grandma’s house for Thanksgiving.

For this I have to give great thanks not only to my children, coming in from various parts of the country, but especially to my children-inlaw. As one of my daughters-in-law Between said not too long ago, “Thanksgiving you and me belongs to the

plans on coming here to Long Island for the holiday, as do my other two daughters-in-law. For that I am hugely grateful.

Of course, for that monopoly I have had to give up other holidays to the other sides of the family, and I have done so cheerfully. We have worked out this arrangement amicably and made it into a rich tradition. What happens at my dining room table on Turkey Day is not just the consumption of the usual Thanksgiving fare but also in turn the sharing of experiences to be thankful for over the past year.

In this way, I get to catch up on what my offspring and their offspring have been up to, and they hear what is important to each of them. Lest it should become too ritualistic and burdensome, I suggested one year that we could skip it, but they wanted to tell their stories. And I certainly wanted to listen.

So how will this year be different from the others?

I eagerly await the individual particulars but, from my perspective, one difference is consideration of the food. There was a time

when I just presented the turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes, greens and a salad, and that was dinner — to be followed by ample portions of pumpkin pie. I probably don’t have to tell you that those innocent days are gone forever.

My first clue that the Thanksgiving universe was changing came when my young children took me aside before the holiday one year and begged me to be understanding of what they were about to confess: They didn’t care for turkey.

Wow! That was a shock to me because I prided myself on cooking the perfect turkey each year — roasted to a golden brown, yet not dried out even in the white meat. the next day for lunch. Comes Thanksgiving Thursday, the table is set, there is a fire in the fireplace, the fare is served, and at the end of the meal the chickens are barely touched but the only part of the turkey left is the carcass. “Is there any more turkey?” someone asks.

I learned. Now when they tell me that they don’t want to eat a lot of animal protein nor dairy because of lactose intolerance — an inherited gene from my dad — nor carbs, and that I should load up with veggies and salad and certainly barely any pie because they wish to eschew lots of sugary sweets in favor of fruit, I readily agree. There will be a cornucopia of spinach and Brussels sprouts, bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower and bottomless salad and fruit bowls. Those veggies can be delicious steamed or roasted with some nuts and spices.

And … there will also be mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, turkey, stuffing and — need I say it? — ample amounts of pumpkin and apple pies.

We shall see what is left over this time.
