A look at West Meadow Beach — 12 years post-cottages Time for a second look at the reclaimed nature preserve?

By Donna newman donna@tbrnewspapers.com It’s been 20 years since New York State Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) authored legislation to create a nature preserve at West Meadow Beach, with a guarantee that it would not be a drain on the ongoing Brookhaven Town budget.

Englebright described a grueling and divisive battle that continued for the eight years between passage of the legislation and the eventual reclamation of the beach.

“I wanted to write state law that established, as specifically as I could at the time, the land uses going forward,” he said, adding that West Meadow Beach is now the most valuable asset Brookhaven Town owns.

Brookhaven officials agreed to take responsibility for the preserve, via a “home rule message,” to keep it a town property.

“Home rule message” is a New York State Assembly policy that, if a proposed bill will affect a municipality, before the speaker authorizes it to come out of committee, that municipality must signal its approval, Englebright said. Brookhaven Town, under then Supervisor Felix Grucci, did just that.

The legislation — A 11008-A in the Assembly and S 7829 sponsored by former

New York State Senator James Lack (R) in the Senate — included a provision for a segregated account to contain rent money paid into it by the cottage-owners who continued to occupy them during the summers between 1996 and 2004.

In 1996, nearly 100 cottages were on West Meadow Beach. The legislation required all cottage owners to pay an annual rent to the West Meadow Beach Capital Restoration Fund overseen by both the Stony Brook Community Fund and Brookhaven Town.

In 2004, that fund was used to remove the cottages to make way for the preserve, as well as restoration of the beach.

The Gamecock Cottage at the end of Trustees Road, one cottage to serve as a local museum, and two cottages for security/ park protection purposes were the only buildings not removed.

Meanwhile, the Stony Brook Community Fund became The Ward Melville Heritage Organization. It has since declined to handle the responsibilities spelled out in the legislation.

According to the Brookhaven Town Department of Finance, these endowment funds are kept in a bank account separate from other Brookhaven Town funds. The current balance in this account is $1.45 million, which generates approximately

Jack Krieger, public information officer of Brookhaven, confirmed in an email that Brookhaven has been compliant with this law since it was created.

Englebright said he feels it might be time to revisit the management of West

Meadow Beach.

“It may be time for a public/private partnership vision to be pursued,” he said.

“A not-for-profit operating the Nature Center in conjunction with the town [would be preferable].”

He pointed out that the practice works extremely well for organizations like the Bronx Zoo and the American Museum of Natural History.

Helen Stein Shack Picture Book Contest, year 3 $400 scholarships awarded to Grand Prize winners Emma Clark Library announces the 3rd annual Helen Stein Shack Picture Book Contest to showcase young writing and artistic talent in the community.

Teens in grades 7 to 12 in the Three Village school district are invited to create a children’s picture book. Winning authors receive a monetary prize, have their book bound and added to the library’s collection, and will be recognized at next year’s April 27 awards ceremony.

The contest is divided into two grade categories, 7 to 9 and 10 to 12, with a first and a second prize winner from each group. Each entry can be the work of a single author/illustrator or can be a collaborative effort of an author and an illustrator.

First prize winners receive $400 scholarships; second prize winners get $100 scholarships. (In the event that a winning entry is a collaboration, the prize will be shared.)

Awards are presented in memory of Helen Stein Shack by her family. A teacher, Shack was committed to the education of children. She especially loved the books written for them. A frequent library visitor, even in retirement she kept up with the latest children’s literature.

Police said he was driving with a suspended license. He was arrested and charged with thirddegree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

On Nov. 19 at about 11:30 p.m., a 21-yearold woman from Coram had marijuana while in a Brookhaven Town parking lot, according to police. She was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

A 24-year-old man from Bellport was driving a 2006 BMW that had been previously reported stolen on Middle Country Road in Centereach at about 3:30 a.m. Nov. 19 when he was pulled over for a traffic violation, according to police. He and a 23-year-old man from Mastic Beach, who was in the passenger seat, were arrested and each charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

At about 4 a.m. Nov. 20, a 34-year-old man from Selden was driving a 2002 Saturn on Middle Country Road in Selden and made a right turn onto Route 112 without signaling, police said. He then failed to maintain his lane, so police pulled him over. Police discovered he was driving under the influence of alcohol and possessed cocaine. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

On Nov.19 at about 10:30 p.m., a 37-yearold man from Port Jefferson Station was at the 6th Precinct after he was arrested for outstanding warrants with heroin in his possession. He was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

A 38-year-old man from Farmingville stole gold jewelry valued at more than $1,000 belonging to someone else from a home on Willis Avenue in Port Jefferson, then sold it for cash Nov. 18, according to police. He was arrested and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny.

Near the intersection of Monticello Drive and Randall Road in Shoreham at about 12:30 p.m. Nov. 19, a 45-year-old man from Sound Beach possessed crack cocaine, according to police. Police also determined he was at the location to obtain more of the drug. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and loitering with intent to use a controlled substance.

Pilfered ride

A wallet containing cash, gift cards, a license and credit cards was stolen from a purse within a 2006 Mercedes while it was parked outside of a home on Woodstork Drive in Mount Sinai at about 6 p.m.

Yard work

A leaf blower and chainsaw were stolen from a home on Poplar Court in Miller Place at about 3 p.m. Nov. 18, police said.

Store stick-up

Someone entered a stationary store in a shopping center near the intersection of Route 112 and Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station at about 6 p.m. Nov. 19, showed a handgun and demanded cash, according to police. Cash was taken but no injuries were reported, police said.

For his Eagle Scout project, Brandon renovated the Nature Walk for the Long Island Veterans Home in Stony Brook.

Comerford recently joined Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community as vice president of health services and administrator for The Vincent Bove Health Center. Comerford was the administrator at Water’s Edge, a 120-bed skilled nursing facility in Port Jefferson that offers long-term care, short-term rehab and subacute care.

Comerford holds a master’s degree and an advanced certificate in health care policy and management from Stony Brook University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in professional and liberal studies at Dowling College. He resides in Stony Brook with his wife and three children.

OBITUARIES Margaret MacKrell

Margaret (Peggy) MacKrell, 85, of Hampton Bays, and a former longtime Three Village resident, died suddenly on Nov. 3.

She was the adored wife of Dr. Thaddeus MacKrell for 57 years; loving mother to Margaret Gaglione Collins (David), Thaddeus (Anne Vanker), John (Katie) and Neil (Martha); and cherished grandmother to 12 grandchildren, Ryan, Brenna, Marie, Joseph, Lily, Molly, Thad, Grace, Flynn, Liza, Jack and

Nolan. Peggy was the daughter of the late John and Helen Kneafsey and sister of the late Sister Ellen Marie Kneafsey, Monsignor Neil Kneafsey and Jack Kneafsey.

She was a native of Brooklyn and a graduate of Bishop McDonald High School and St. John’s University Teachers College.

A lifelong educator, Peggy taught at Summit Lane Elementary School in Levittown school district and William S. Mount Elementary School in Three Village school district. Forever faithful, Peggy was active in her parishes, most recently Church of St. Rosalie in Hampton Bays.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of Setauket. Services were held at St. James R.C. Church and interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

William Walcott

William Walcott, 85, of Stony Brook, died Nov. 6. He was born April 19, 1931, in New York City, the son of William and Evelyn Walcott Sr. William was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in the Korean War and was a retired real estate broker.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Elaine, daughters Lori (Nick) and Donna (Michael) and many other family members and friends.

Hanson said he was not the only elected official to provide financial and moral support.

Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (DSetauket) “also believed in us from the very beginning,” Hanson said. “For the Educational and Cultural Center exhibit that we had across the street in 2012, [Hahn] said, ‘I’ll get you the money.’” And there has been money every year since.

The ECC exhibit was a test, Hanson explained, to see if there was enough interest to continue their efforts. With a turnout of 200 people at the art talk, they felt they had a public mandate to proceed.

After saying, “When we wrote out the invitations …,” Hanson paused to contain her emotions. “You are all friends of ours and we thank you, because it really is a miracle,” she concluded.

As renovations began on the 1911 historic building, Hanson, Intini and Lois Reboli met with construction manager Neal Lennstrom, of St. James, at the site to discuss project details. The architectural plans called for the addition of a back entrance and a handicapaccessible bathroom to meet the codes for a public building — as well as new ceilings, flooring and lighting. Lennstrom said he planned to repurpose the bank fixtures, reconfiguring the teller boxes, for example, to become the gift shop.

Reboli described her delight at learning that the bank building was on the market.

She said it was hard for her to imagine a more appropriate site.

“I didn’t want to just put a painting up on a wall someplace,” she said. “Joe used to do his banking in this building.

The house next to the All Souls Church was his mother’s house. The house that’s very close to the road was where his Aunt Anna lived. She worked in this bank. It’s just so perfect.”

“We’re extremely proud of the boys and how far they’ve come this year,” Ward Melville head coach Chris Boltrek said.

“Over the last three seasons, we have improved upon the prior year’s record and, for the seniors, Friday was the culmination of their dedication and effort. Hopefully, going forward, our trip to the county championship will encourage student-athletes throughout the district to play football and strengthen the program.”

Ward Melville’s first break of the game came on a fumble recovery when William Floyd was driving into the red zone. The Patriots offense went to work on their own 18-yard line, and senior quarterback Wesley Manning hit classmate Andrew McKenna, a wide receiver, over the middle on a 22-yard pass to move the chains to the middle of the field.

Amid the drive, Ward Melville was forced to punt the ball away.

On their next possession, the Patriots also fumbled the ball, but the difference was that the Colonials made the Ward Melville pay for its mistake by finding the end zone four plays later for an early 7-0 lead.

The ensuing kickoff gave Ward Melville good field position following William Floyd drawing three consecutive penalties for an out of bounds kick, delay of game and offsides. Backed up on its own 25-yard line, William Floyd finally got the kick away and the Patriots’ return brought them to the Colonials’ 38-yard line with eight minutes remaining until halftime.

Ward Melville seized the opportunity and Manning found senior wide receiver Eddie Munoz over the middle, to move the chains to the 29-yard line. Manning spread the wealth and dropped the next pass to senior wide receiver Dominic Pryor on the left side for the 35-yard touchdown reception, and with senior kicker Joe LaRosa’s extra-point kick, the team tied the game 7-7.

With just over three minutes left in the half, William Floyd went up 14-7 with a 10yard touchdown run from James Taitt, but Ward Melville had an answer. The Patriots went deep into the playbook, and Manning hit Pryor on a screen pass who, although running into a wall, flicked the ball to senior wide receiver John Corpac, who raced down the left sideline for the touchdown. LaRosa’s kick made it a new game at 14-14.

Ward Melville had an opportunity to take a lead into the break, but failed to find the end zone on four consecutive plays from William Floyd’s 5-yard line.

Manning threw an interception to open the second half, and Taitt moved the ball to Ward Melville’s 1-yard line on the next play. Nick Silva finished the drive to put William Floyd out front, 21-14, to open the final quarter.

“Obviously we are very upset we didn’t reach our goal of winning the LIC, but I’m very proud to be able to say I helped lead the team to the county championship [final], which we haven’t been to in 29 years,” Manning said. “It’s been a great season and we all made memories and have a bond that will last a lifetime.”

The Patriots struggled with the Colonials’ defensive line, and with 6:54 left to play, Silva tacked on his third touchdown run of the game, to extend the advantage, 28-14.

On the ensuing kickoff, Ward Melville’s junior running back Nick Messina made a statement, when he returned the ball 74 yards and into the end zone, to pull the Patriots back within one touchdown with 6:32 remaining.

The Patriots’ final push brought them to the Colonials’ red zone with just over a minute left on the clock, but after four chances Ward Melville just couldn’t break through.

“This is a group of kids that are fighters — they don’t quit no matter what was going on,” Boltrek said. “They fought through adversity at all points of the season. They were never out of any game and that’s just the attitude they have. At one point we were 2-4, and for them to show the fortitude and character to believe in one another and believe in the process and keep fighting all the way to the county championship speaks volumes about them as young men. We’re going to miss our seniors, and I hope their Herculean effort has inspired the underclassmen to work even

harder for next season — off-season workouts begin after Thanksgiving.”

Ward Melville’s ascent to the finals may have seemed unlikely, needing to win the final two games of the season to make a postseason appearance, and shutting out Connetquot and dethroning previously undefeated No. 1 Lindenhurst. But in his third year leading the team, Boltrek was able to continue the turnaround for the program.

“I have good athletes and I have good coaches, so I give them a lot of credit,” Boltrek said. “And the kids have bought into the idea that Ward Melville could be a football school.”

Many reasons to give thanks As we approach Thanksgiving our editorial staff want to reflect on what reasons, small and big, we have to be thankful for this year.

I’m thankful for my immigrant father, who came from Colombia and chose to make a life in the United States, thus giving me a life here. I’m thankful for my mother who married that Colombian “nutjob” and raised me right because she’s one hell of a woman.

And most importantly I’m thankful for my Xbox, which is one of the most beautiful inventions ever made and I will never live without one again and I love it.

The challenge of coming together under the leadership of a new president that many people did not vote for has begun. Religion may provide some insights on how to heal the wounds of the election.

Several years ago, I traveled to Israel during what Christians call Holy Week, the days leading up to Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. As we stood together before the Western Wall in Jerusalem, my friend Ilan proudly said, “It all started here.”

I kept hearing Ilan’s words as I visited Masada, Nazareth, the Synagogue at Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan River, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Via Dolorosa, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Dome of the Rock, where many believe Abraham was to sacrifice Isaac, Solomon and Herod built their temples, and the Prophet

Mohammed began his passage to heaven.

At the funeral of murdered journalist Daniel Pearl (beheaded by the Taliban), an imam spoke of the shared values of the three Abrahamic faiths. “If to be a Jew means to say with all one’s heart, mind and soul, hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One, not only today I am a Jew, I have always been one.

“If to be a Christian means to love the Lord God our Lord with all my heart, mind and soul, and to love for my fellow human beings what I love for myself, then I am not only a Christian, but I have always been one.

“And I am here to inform you, with the full authority of the Quaranic texts and the practices of the Prophet Mohammad, to say May Allah’s Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you, is no different.”

Every four years it seems

politics is elevated to religion, and the two sides do their best to get out the faithful, convert the unbelievers (e.g., targeting millennials; blacks; Hispanics; white, non-college-educated males; suburban, college-educated women; etc.) and demonize their opponents.

President-elect Trump was very clear in his brief victory speech: “Now it is time for America to bind the wounds of division … I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be President for all Americans.”

Perhaps he can learn a lesson from the imam at Daniel Pearl’s funeral and begin the healing by drawing upon the shared values that Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Greens and Independents share to guide his decisions.

A suggestion for Congressman Lee Zeldin U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin called for unity after his victory in “the most polarizing election in our nation’s history” and stated that “the pursuit of common ground must be the highest priority.”

If that is true, I hope Mr. Zeldin can use his connections to President-elect Donald Trump and convince him to begin his presidency by addressing issues that have bipartisan support first.

For example, Trump voters want to “drain the swamp” in Washington, and Hillary Clinton voters want to get the money out of politics because “corporations are not people.” There’s lots of potential for agreement around this problem.

Mr. Zeldin expressed a desire to work with “absolutely anyone to better our community, state and nation.”

There is no issue that has more bipartisan support than this one. I hope Mr. Zeldin will use this window of opportunity to take the lead on this most important issue. That would show the kind of leadership that could be supported by all of his constituents.

To those who voted for Donald Trump Let me start by saying that I did not vote for Mr. Trump but I very much hope that he will be an excellent president.

I hope that most Americans did not vote for him because of his racist and sexist language and actions, but rather in spite of them.

Nonetheless, I feel compelled to share recent stories of hatred committed by and on fellow Americans that can only be attributed to Mr. Trump’s rise to power.

• Lehigh Valley, PA: high school students yelling gay slurs and Nwords in the halls, calling black students cotton pickers using “Heil Hitler” salutes.

• Santa Monica, CA: Gay man beaten and sent to hospital.

• Brooklyn: Man passes a woman Muslim wearing scarf, says “Your time is up sweetie.”

• Plano East High School, TX: group of boys rip off a girl’s hijab.

• Shasta High School Redding, CA: White students hand out “deportation letters” to Latino students.

• Wellsville: Baseball dugout spray painted “Make America White Again” with swastika.

These are but a small sample of the hateful actions reported in the first 24 hours after Trump was announced president-elect. I worry that this is only the beginning.

I hope that many of you who supported Mr. Trump are as nauseated by these actions as I am, and I hope you will join me in fighting this hatred. We must display and acknowledge the inherent worth and dignity of every human being, regardless of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, disability, etc. We must heed the golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. We should celebrate the diversity among us. May kindness prevail over hatred.

’m going to blend the holidays, and make a naughty and a nice list of those things for which I’m thankful.

I’ll start with the nice.

I’m thankful for inspirational teachers. Every day, some teachers devote so much time and energy to their work that they ignite a passion for learning, a curiosity or a determination in their students that has the potential to pay dividends for decades. An inspired student reflects and emanates an educational light that,

I’m thankful for the police who

patrol our streets and who protect and serve us. They can and do tackle everything from delivering a baby on the Long Island Expressway to racing toward reports of someone with a weapon.

I’m also thankful for the firefighters, who rescue people trapped in burning buildings and who suffer through cold wind, rain and snow while doing their job.

I’m thankful for all the soldiers who, regardless of which president is in office, accept their responsibility and protect America’s interests wherever they serve.

I’m thankful for the scientists who dedicate themselves, tirelessly, to the pursuit of basic knowledge about everything from quarks and neutrinos, to the researchers who are on a mission to cure cancer, to understand autism, or to defeat fungi or viruses that threaten the quality and quantity of our lives.

I’m thankful for the sanitation workers who appear during the wee hours

of the morning, clear out our garbage and move on to the next house.

I’m thankful for the First Amendment. I’m grateful that our Founding Fathers decided we have the right not to remain silent. Our constitution guarantees us the kind of free speech that allows us to express our views, even if those opinions are contrary to those of our government or our neighbors.

OK, here’s the nasty list.

I’m thankful for the Internet, which prevents anyone from being wrong about anything, ever. Well, information on the Internet may also be inaccurate, but who cares? If it’s there and we repeat it, at least we’re echoing something someone else wrote, even if that person is an 8-year-old who is just learning to type and is posting something that looks like it could be right.

I’m thankful for all those people who honk at me when I don’t hit the accelerator the moment the light turns green. They remind me I should be efficient for all of our sakes and that I could be doing something much more

important, like looking up stuff on the Internet rather than sitting at a light.

I’m thankful I can roll my eyes in my head. How else could I deal with those events around me that I find insufferable, from listening to our political leaders rip into each other to engaging in arguments with people who know better and can show me all the information they use to back up their arguments on the Internet.

I’m thankful for the rain and the cold and the snow. OK, so this is in between a naughty and nice one, because I believe varied weather presents something for everyone. Sure, people don’t tend to like it when the temperature falls too far, but I enjoy the cold.

Besides, the winter provides a contrast to seasonable weather.

Finally, I’m thankful for prognosticators of all types, including the recent ones who seemed so sure of themselves about the results of the election.

They are a reminder that sure things don’t exist in any arena, even those with a preponderance of pontificators.

Differing opinions across the Thanksgiving table

hanksgiving is arriving at the right time. With so much to be thankful for, it should be hard to remember one’s passions about the outcome of the recent presidential election. Yet there is talk about families who are calling off their Thanksgiving reunions around grandma’s richly laden table because they don’t want to talk politics with relatives who were on the “other” side.

People have a right to think differently, even if they are related.

There is, after all, no accounting for the distribution of genes, and anyway that’s not important in the scheme of things. What is important is the love family members feel for

each other and the security that they have each other’s backs. If that is not the relationship one has with one’s family, I guess differing political opinions are a good enough reason to break off what was a meaningless business of just going through the kinship motions to begin with.

Even though the present situation is not nearly as dire, I am reminded of the Civil War or the War Between the States, which pitted brother against brother on the battlefield.

That was a tragedy of deepest proportions. Right now, we are merely dealing with the outcome of an election whose consequences are perhaps feared or cheered but have not been actualized. If matters do get worse in our nation, we are going to need each other all the more to manage. And if they get better, then we can all cheer together.

Let’s wait and see — and break bread together, treasuring the love that binds us rather than the rhetoric that divides us.

As we go forward, we should remain vigilant about what is happening in our country and speak truth to those in power. The end of the

election, at long last, is but the beginning of the next chapter. We have the right, as Americans, to speak our minds and expect those who represent us to hear us. Indeed, we have the obligation to remain active in our society, letting our lawmakers know how we feel even as we set an example of staying informed and engaged for our children and grandchildren.

What we should take great care to do, however, is work to separate fact from fiction. Communication in today’s world is infinitely more complicated than when our founding patriots read newspapers to learn what was happening. And even then, they had to be sure whose words they were reading and whether the writers could be trusted. By comparison today, there are so many different vehicles claiming to give the “facts.”

Newspapers, radio and TV networks have been joined by cable, the Internet and dangerously, social media, where anyone can say anything without the benefit of fact-checking and their words can be transmitted to literally millions of people.

This is how jihadists woo recruits.

This is also how politicians’ supporters win voters. So how can one tell if what one is reading is fact? The answer is obvious but hard. We must use that same Internet to check out what we have read on social media, not just assume that what we are told is correct because it comes from a good friend or loved one. Facts must be corroborated by multiple news sources, not just by opinions.

Indeed, the more dramatic an assertion, the more likely it will be published in many places, not just on Facebook or Twitter.

Also, we need to talk with more than each other, by which I mean those with similar views. We need to talk to people on the “other” side of issues and ideology. At the least, we may learn how they come to the conclusions they do. And maybe we can hear something we might agree with, creating a bridge and not a wall. Some of those we talk with might even be our relatives. But that brings me back to grandma’s dining room table: Wait until everyone has finished and enjoyed dinner first before discussions commence.
