DEC acquires land parcel in Old Field New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced a $2 million acquisition of an undeveloped land parcel on Flax Pond in the village of Old Field, Nov. 3. This acquisition will result in greater protection of the Long Island Sound and was paid for with funds from the state’s Environmental Protection Fund.

The six-acre wooded parcel on Shore Road has 300 feet of frontage along the southeasterly shore of Flax Pond, opposite the pond’s outlet to the Long Island Sound.

Its protection is cited in the 2016 Open Space Conservation Plan, released by Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) last year, as a priority acquisition for protection of the Long Island Sound Watershed.

DEC worked with the New York-based Open Space Institute to finalize the land acquisition. OSI purchased the property from a private seller in January 2016, and conveyed it to DEC this year after clearing the title and removing structures and debris, restoring the property to a natural condition.

The newly acquired acreage will be added to the state’s adjacent Flax Pond State Tidal Wetland, acquired by the state in 1966 under the joint jurisdiction of DEC and the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

The 146-acre facility includes the majority of 128.2 acres of Flax Pond and wetlands and 18 acres of adjacent upland and includes Childs Mansion and Flax Pond Marine Lab. DEC manages the acreage for habitat pro-

tection and nature enjoyment by the public while the university manages primarily for research and education.

The Shore Road parcel was at one time slated for development with two large residences. Its preservation will protect coastal water quality by preventing new residential runoff and leachate from entering the pond and sound. Environmental benefits of the acquisition are enhanced by the site restoration undertaken by OSI during its period of ownership, including abatement and demolition of the asbestos-containing residence, and removal and remediation of two underground oil tanks and on-site septic system.

Diverting new home development away from vulnerable coastal areas is part of Cuomo’s strategy to bolster New York’s ability to withstand future coastal storms and their impacts. DEC has no immediate plans for the newly acquired land but any future use will be limited to low-impact passive recreation.

New York State Assemblyman and Environmental Conservation Committee Chair Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) said the acquisition was an example of the state’s commitment to environmental protection.

“Added to the significant assemblage of state ownership in the Flax Pond State Tidal Wetland, this parcel will enhance efforts to protect the coastal salt marsh and uplands for water quality, wildlife habitats, scientific research and education, and nature enjoyment,” Englebright said.

village Gyrodyne: Residents traffic concerns are valid

Gyrodyne made a formal presentation of its future plans for the nearly 75-acre property Nov. 15 to the Smithtown Planning Board and a standing-room only crowd. The developer has proposed to subdivide the Flowerfield land in order to build a 220-unit assisted living facility, a 130,000-square foot medical office building and a 150-room hotel with a restaurant, conference space and day spa/fitness center.

“We are not looking to maximize yield here,” Richard Smith, director of Gyrodyne and a St. James resident, said. “We are looking to strike the right balance between economic development, which I think we all know the St. James community desperately needs, and to preserve and enhance the environment we all love.”

Nearly 100 residents and Brookhaven elected officials packed the meeting to make clear their opposition to the project’s traffic impact on Route 25A, Mills Pond Road and Stony Brook Road.

“Town of Brookhaven is opposed to any traffic created as a result of this proposed subdivision emptying out onto town roads and, specifically, Stony Brook Road,” said Brenda

Prusinowski, deputy commissioner of planning and environment for Brookhaven Town, reading a statement for Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (R). “This road is overcrowded now, particularly because of usage from the university, and does not need additional traffic from a project outside our town.”

Jennifer Martin, aide for Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie Cartwright (D-Port Jefferson Station), echoed the supervisor’s sentiment and made clear the town is “staunchly opposed to any additional traffic” on Route 25A as well.

Mills Pond Road homeowner Laurie Kassay said she opposed the project despite promises from Gyrodyne it will create an estimated 900 new jobs and generate

“The area cannot handle any more traffic,” Kassay said. “If there’s 900 jobs, that’s 900 more vehicles on the road on a daily basis.”

The developer hired Woodbury-based Cameron Engineering & Associates who performed a traffic study focusing on 16 intersections off Mills Pond Road, Moriches Road, Route 25A and Stony Brook Road surrounding the property. The results were submitted to the Town of Smithtown and New York State Department of Transportation in October 2017, but have yet to be reviewed.

“The concern of the traffic impact is completely understood,” said Kevin McAndrew of Cameron Engineering. “The traffic impact study has confirmed why the concern is valid.

A number of the 16 intersections studied today have poor or failing conditions.”

If Gyrodyne’s plans go forward, McAndrew said the firm has proposed traffic improvements be made at six intersections. The intersection of Route 25A and Mills Pond Road should have traffic signals installed, according to the traffic study, which also suggested NYS DOT design a roundabout at the intersection of Route 25A and Stony Brook Road in addition to traffic mitigation measures at four additional intersections on Stony Brook Road.

State Assemblyman Steve Englebright (DSetauket) was outraged at the suggestion of a roundabout being installed on the historic Route 25A corridor in front of the William Sidney Mount House, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. He urged the planning board to reject Gyrodyne’s plans, stating that in his opinion as a scientist, it’s not environmentally sustainable and instead encouraged Smithtown town officials to work with Brookhaven in future development of the region.

“Our communities have a long history of cooperation,” Englebright said. “I hope we don’t have to set up canons on the border.

Conrad Chayes Sr., chairman of the Smithtown Planning Board, concluded the board would hold off on a decision until an environmental impact study is completed by the town, which he said may take up to a year.

Town Brookhaven car show raises charitable donations

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com Classic car owners cruised into the parking lot at Brookhaven Town Hall Nov. 12 to show off not only their collection of vintage hot rods, trucks and wacky automobiles but their hearts, too.

At the town’s annual Charity Car and Motorcycle Show — a partnership between the Brookhaven Youth Bureau and different classic car, truck and motorcycle clubs throughout Long Island — more than 300 vehicles of all shapes, makes and models were on display for residents in an effort to gather nonperishable food and unwrapped toy donations for families in need.

This year’s event collected 1,500 pounds of food, including canned soups and boxes of rice. The items were transported by the town’s INTERFACE program to the Brookhaven food bank, in support of its Thanksgiving Food Drive, and will go directly to residents that need it most. By the end of the day, residents also filled 25 big bags with toys for children.

“This really helps allow people to have a very merry Christmas and a happy holiday,” said Sound Beach resident Dan Ryan, a member of the Long Island Chapter of the American Truck Historical Society, one of the event’s main groups that has helped collect donations since it first began about 12 years ago. “It’s just one day out of the year but it makes a big difference in people’s lives, especially kids. The crowds here are really caring people. They come out and give what they can.”

Maxine Kleedorfer, the event’s chairperson and a member of East End Olds Club, said of the day: “This is still so amazing to me. It’s Long Islanders giving to Long Islanders.”

Street Rod Association, as well as independent car owners, who showcased everything from old Chevy coupes to Lincoln Continentals to a 1981 Checker Taxi Cab. Residents perusing the variety of wheels in the parking lot were treated to live music from local bands, free hot dogs and beverages, 50/50 raffle prizes and even a special visit from Santa Claus, who rolled up in an antique LaFrance Brockway Torpedo fire truck to meet with the kids and ask what they wanted for Christmas.

Adam Navarro, a vintage car collector from Centereach, said while he was happy to see so much generosity in the air that day, it didn’t surprise him all that much.

“One of the biggest things about car culture is that those involved are always giving back to the community,” Navarro said.

“So you come out here, look at some great cars, sip hot chocolate, meet some friends and at the same time help out the community. You can’t get better than that.”

Special delivery

A 29-year-old man from Centereach working as a delivery man for Boccone Pizzeria & Ristorante on Middle Country Road in Selden took cash belonging to the business at the end of his shift Oct. 17, according to police. He was arrested Nov. 15 in Centereach and charged with petit larceny.

Upon his arrest, police also discovered he possessed heroin, police said. He was also charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Foul pole

On Nov. 18 at about 1 p.m., a 28-year-old man from Centereach driving a 2016 Kia on Mooney Pond Road in Selden crashed into a utility pole, according to police.

Police determined he was driving while under the influence of a drug, police said.

He was arrested and charged with firstdegree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

At about 1 a.m. Nov. 17, a 22-year-old man from Stony Brook driving a 2006 BMW south on Nicolls Road in Stony Brook failed to move over for two stopped emergency vehicles with their lights and sirens engaged, according to police. The driver was pulled over and police determined he was driving while under the influence of a drug, police said. He was arrested and charged with first-degree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

A 41-year-old undomiciled man entered Speedway gas station on Nesconset Highway in Stony Brook Nov. 18 at about 9 a.m., displayed a handgun and forcibly stole money, according to police. He was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery.

Golf clubs were stolen from a home on Bayview Avenue in Setauket Nov. 14 at about 9 p.m., according to police.

At Ruvo East restaurant on Wynn Lane in Port Jefferson, someone entered and stole two empty beer kegs at about 11 p.m. Nov. 17, according to police.

At about 6 p.m. Nov. 17, the windshield and three windows of a 2005 Peterbilt utility truck were broken while it was parked on Highland Avenue in Mount Sinai, according to police.

During a pickup basketball game on the grounds of Ward Melville High School at about 4 p.m. Nov. 18, a verbal altercation resulted in a fist fight between two men, with one being transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries, according to police.

The rear driver’s side door was damaged and windows were broken on a 2000 Lexus parked on Clymer Street in Terryville Oct. 22 at about 7 p.m., according to police. A report was filed Nov. 18.

Late night break-in

Someone broke the glass front door at Bottle Blowout Wine & Liquor on Nesconset Highway in Setauket Nov. 17 at about midnight, entered the store and stole several bottles of liquor, according to police.

Pharmacy pilfering

A 41-year-old undomiciled man took medicine, beer and eyeglasses from CVS on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station Nov. 16 at about 11 a.m., according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Dodge drives off

A 2013 Dodge parked on Granada Circle in Mount Sinai was stolen Nov. 3 at about 10:30 p.m., according to police. It was reported stolen Nov. 18.

More than three years ago, Thomas Cerna created Youthire America to provide more opportunities for young people between 16 and 26 years old to earn cash while gaining work experience. The entrepreneur set up the website www. youthire.org where Sea Cliff, Glen Head, Glenwood Landing and Glen Cove students could connect with homeowners and business owners. Now the nonprofit organization is extending the same opportunities to Stony Brook University students and residents in the surrounding areas.

“It’s a really great way to connect kids with adults in the neighborhood, and they’re making money doing odd jobs,” Cerna said.

Although a mobile app doesn’t yet exist, the website serves as a hub offering work opportunities in four separate categories — internships, volunteer projects, traditional employment and odd jobs.

Cerna said he got the idea to partner with the university when he noticed a homeowner from Setauket posted a request. He reached out to the poster and discovered they were informed about the site by Joanna Durso, senior career counselor with the university’s career center, who lives near Cerna and was familiar with Youthire.

Durso said the site makes it easier for the career center to help residents who need help, especially since the school is unable to promote jobs that need to be done inside private homes on its website.

“In addition to offering SBU students another source of job listings, Youthire is helpful for us when we hear from local residents who want to hire students for household work, baby-sitting, and so on,” Durso said.

Students set up profiles on the site and are notified by email when jobs within five miles are posted. If a student is interested in a task, the homeowner receives an email and can check the student’s profile page, which includes a photograph, narrative and past work history, before contacting them.

Everyone using the site goes through a background check and screening for misdemeanors and felonies.

Cerna said he decided to start the nonprofit after remembering the odd jobs he worked while growing up in Mamaroneck. His high school had a career services center where students could sign up for odd jobs.

The founder said he believes working at a young age creates personal responsibility and a good work ethic, and in a society where drug use has skyrocketed, he said he feels it can keep kids out of trouble.

“It’s something that could steer a kid in the right direction for a kid going in the wrong direction,” Cerna said.

Kevin McDonagh, of Glen Head, said he used Youthire to clean out his shed. He said with his own children in college, he needed help with the big job and remembered making signs for Cerna at the sign shop where he works.

“It was a really satisfying experience,” McDonagh said.

“They came in, they did the job. Not only did the job, but they were proactive in the work. I didn’t have to direct them every step of the way.”

One of the students who worked on his shed was Brian Danoski. The senior at Stony Brook University, who is studying to be an entrepreneur, said he discovered the site on his own a few years ago.

“It’s building my experience and desire for learning new things,” Danoski said.

The college student said he likes that the site easily connects him with those who need help and allows flexibility, especially with the demands of his class schedule.

He said the site is also perfect for high schoolers. “[Cerna’s] really passionate about it,” Danoski said. “That’s why it’s going to succeed because he wants the youth to get out there and do more and learn about the world.”

Albany group, residents take the county to court over fees

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com An upstate New York legal group that helps residents stand up against improper actions by their government recently set its sights on Suffolk County, whose hike in illegal fees in the past two years is the focus of a class-action lawsuit.

On Oct. 24, the Government Justice Center, an Albanybased nonprofit that offers pro bono representation to New York residents seeking to “fight city hall,” filed a lawsuit in state Supreme Court on behalf of five Suffolk County residents against the county, saying its abundance of assessment

fees are “unauthorized taxes.”

The plaintiffs — homeowners living in Melville, Kings Park, Commack, Calverton and Shirley — face increasingly expensive fees for filing real estate documents, namely tax map verifications, which raked in $66 million this year, that far surpass the county’s operating budget of $1.2 million to perform the transactions through its Real Property Tax Service Agency, the suit alleges.

Between 2015 and 2017, mortgage recording fees and tax map verification fees imposed by the county jumped from $60 to $200 per land parcel, with an additional $300 slapped on for every mortgage recording instrument used. The revenue

from the fees contributes to the county’s general fund.

According to the complaint, the county passed legislation to enforce these “backdoor taxes” on a certain subset of residents — homeowners in this case — to bear the county’s burden as it was “unwilling to rein in its spending or face the political consequences of raising taxes to pay for general fund expenses.”

But, under state law, local fees charged are not allowed to exceed the cost of service or be used to offset the revenue of general government functions.

The homeowners are now calling on the county to stop imposing the illegal fees or at least reduce them to more closely match the $1.2 million service cost, and to refund them a portion of the real estate document fees. The county is currently being subpoenaed by the nonprofit Government Justice Center.

“It’s important that the residents get the opportunity to have their voices heard,” said Cameron MacDonald, the executive director of the GJC. “The county is not supposed to be raising revenue through unauthorized taxes in the form of excessive fees. They need to either pass a tax that affects everyone or cut its spending.”

Mike Armstrong, the director of field operations for Reclaim New York Initiative, a nonpartisan group with representation on the GJC’s board, has been active in gaining public support of the lawsuit.

Ahead of the Suffolk County Legislature’s budget vote for 2018, which passed Nov. 8, MacDonald said he and his group called on legislators, to no avail, to eliminate a total $102 million in fees that generate revenue above the cost of the departments that collect them.

“The only thing they addressed in the budget meeting was to project more revenue from those illegal fees,” Armstrong said later. “They need to get in front of this, correct their mistakes and lead.”

He compared the county’s gradual increase of fees on taxpayers to “the difference between getting small cuts on your arm to having it chopped off entirely.”

“The county talks a lot of talk about wanting to keep people here while they’re pushing them out the door with fees and taxes,” Armstrong said. “I feel bad for young couples who want to buy a house who are now paying that mortgage fee. I feel bad for senior citizens who are finalizing everything and closing out their mortgages and then are faced with an exorbitant fee. It’s an issue that’s really impacting people in a dramatic way.”

Armstrong said while a tax increase is never popular among residents, it’s at least honest compared to fees.

During a vote last December to adopt the 2017 county budget, Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville) defended the fee increases, saying residents will not leave Suffolk County because of a few additional hundreds of dollars.

“I don’t think anyone is going to move to Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Arizona or anywhere else because of $300,” Gregory said regarding the verification fee. “I think it’s going to cost more to relocate than the increase in this fee.”

Among the few voices of opposition to the fees on the Legislature is Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga), who, during the meeting to adopt the 2017 county budget, called it “death by a thousand knives.” He later warned, in an interview, of an inevitable deficit in the county’s budget in the aftermath of the lawsuits.

“The mismanagement of Suffolk County is heading us down the path of bankruptcy,” Trotta said. “They’re going to lose the lawsuits and they’re going to have to refund the fees and stop spending money. There’s going to be a huge hole in the budget no matter what.”

Jason Elan, a spokesman for County Executive Steve Bellone (D), addressed the lawsuit in an emailed statement.

“This is a politically motivated lawsuit filed by Albany insiders who lack any understanding on how government costs are apportioned, yet have no problem saddling taxpayers with the cost of fighting this completely frivolous complaint,” Elan’s statement read.

A Patriots salute

The North Country Patriots held a Veterans Day luncheon Nov. 11 to honor the members of the group who served in the military.

A special honoree was World War II veteran Dominic Ercolano, who after just

turning 18 in 1943 enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He served until 1946 and left as a master sergeant.

Ercolano is one of the founders of the North Country Patriots who gather every Saturday morning on the corner of Route 25A and Bennetts Road in East Setauket.

The Smithtown Children’s Foundation honored Myra Naseem, co-owner of Elegant Eating, at its Community Table Grand Tasting event at Flowerfield Celebrations in St. James. Naseem and Neil Schumer founded the Smithtown business 30 years ago. When the business first opened, the caterers worked out of a storefront in Stony Brook on Route 347.

Naseem was recognized for her more than 50 years of teaching local residents how to cook and her catering at the Nov. 14 event. Before she entered into the world of catering, Naseem was a home economics

Richard E. Volz, 86, of Setauket, died Oct. 28 at his home with his family by his side.

Richard is survived by his loving wife Theresa of 58 years; daughter Maureen; sons Richard and Bill (Jo Ann); five grandchildren Edward (Brianna), Steven (Kelly), Rachel, Alyssa and Billy Jr.; three great-grandchildren Tyler, Olivia and Jackson; sister Marilyn (Alfred); sister-in-law Jean; and nieces, nephews and extended family.

Richard was the eldest son of Emil and Mary Volz and was preceded in

death by his brother Gerard. Richard was a loving father, husband, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Richard loved his family and travel.

A devout Catholic, he attended Mass regularly and was always an example of his faith. He served in the New York National Guard from 1948 through 1957 and worked as a senior staff engineer for New York Telephone Company. He also enjoyed reading, movies and history.

Richard was always there to help family and friends whenever they needed him.

Changes in transportation led to life changes

By BEvERLy C. TyLER The changes in transportation that began in the early 1800s were dramatic and far-reaching. They made it possible to lower costs of food and fuel, expand settlements, open western New York and the Midwest

and provide employment for thousands of immigrants. Before steam power, transportation on land was limited to walking, riding horses and going by horse and wagon.

ganic modes of transportation: wind, current, animals and feet.

By the 1850s and 1860s schooners, barks and full-rigged ships were setting speed records on the China trade route and around Cape Horn to the California coast. Sloops and schooners brought goods to and from Long Island, carried cordwood into New York City and eventually carried coal from Jersey City and Newark to communities on Long Island.

Because it was so difficult and time consuming to sail upstream, great American rivers such as the Hudson in New York and the Connecticut River remained underutilized. It was realized that the steam engine applied to a boat would allow for on-demand propulsion for the first time in human history. In the first decade of the 1800s, New York State offered a prize, the exclusive commercial route up the Hudson River, for the first steamboat to travel the route at an average of 4 mph.

Robert Fulton, an artist in Paris and a self-styled engineer, with financing by Robert R. Livingston, realized that a large paddlewheel, attached to the side of the vessel, rather than a screw propeller at the stern, was the answer to go upstream. In August 1807, Fulton’s North River Steamboat achieved 5 mph from Manhattan to Albany, and he received the prize.

DeWitt Clinton, mayor of New York and former U.S. senator, was elected governor in 1816. He began construction of the Erie Canal from Lake Erie to the Hudson River with state and private funding on July 4, 1817.

The canal opened in sections and every section became proof of the canal’s value as a propeller of commerce. Completed in 1825, the canal quickly exceeded all expectations.

Goods from Cleveland got to Manhattan within days. Chicago was easily accessible from New York. The Erie Canal was the first large commercial canal in America.

By 1862, the canal had a depth of 7 feet and could handle boats carrying 240 tons. In 1882, the canal was made free. It had earned $42 million above the original cost and the expenses of enlargement,

maintenance and operation. The success of the Erie Canal set off canal mania in other states: the Ohio and Erie Canal from Cleveland to the Ohio River 350 miles south and the Miami and Erie Canal from Toledo to Cincinnati. By 1830, the population in the Northwest (now the Midwest) doubled to 1.6 million and by 1840 doubled again to 3.3 million. Canals had opened what is now known as the Midwest. By 1850, the two major American ports were New York and New Orleans.

Now areas near the Great Lakes — from the Allegheny River to Pittsburgh and the Monongahela to the Ohio to the Mississippi, to the Gulf of Mexico — were commercially more connected to the American south than to the Atlantic coast with its population in the millions. The Wabash and Erie Canal was a shipping canal that linked the Great Lakes to the Ohio River via an artificial waterway. The canal provided traders with access from the Great Lakes all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Over 460 miles long, it was the longest canal ever built in North America. Due to canal mania in the north, the railroads were slow in starting, lacking investment and behind the British in the manufacture of iron. By 1837, there were only 1,500 miles of track in America. Track construction accelerated right after the panic of 1837. By 1840, Cornelius Vanderbilt had bought and sold enough steamships and steamship routes to amass a fortune. Running through Long Island Sound, Vanderbilt had the fastest boats from Manhattan to Providence to Boston. Canals and steamboats made longdistance transportation viable, but canals were a temporary solution. The railroads would soon become the vehicle that united America with steam power.

Fondue: A Swiss tradition

Then there is a dessert fondue featuring chocolate, cream and liqueurs heated until melted, then used to coat pieces of cake or fruit.

When selecting wines to pair with fondue, choose fairly neutral dry white wines with good acidity, while avoiding oaky ones. My recommended white wines include a Swiss Fendant (Chasselas grape) or Neuchâtel; French Chablis or Muscadet; Grüner Veltliner, sauvignon blanc or dry Riesling. Choose red wines with little tannin and oak in favor of wines like Beaujolais, grenache, grignolino, and pinot noir.

The following fondue recipe is a modification of the original I enjoyed while in Switzerland. Although the recipe calls for the traditional Emmental or Gruyère cheese, you can also try Appenzeller, Beaufort or Comté and any combination of these cheeses.

As the weather turns colder and days become shorter, thoughts of sitting around a roaring fire come to mind. Although freshly roasted chestnuts and large mugs of mulled wine or even hot chocolate satisfy, I enjoy dipping some crusty bread into a pot of melted cheese. Not just any cheese, but one that is flavored with kirsch (cherry brandy), garlic, white wine and seasonings. I’m talking fondue, a true Swiss tradition.

Place the pot over medium heat and stir with a wooden spoon.

If the cheese forms into a thick mass, continue to stir and it will be reabsorbed. As the mixture continues to bubble, adjust flavor with salt and pepper, then add the bicarbonate of soda, which will make the fondue lighter.

Now the fondue is ready to enjoy.

Take cubes of crusty French or Italian bread; fasten onto foot-long, threepronged, metal fondue forks and dip into the fondue for a moment or so before popping it into your mouth.

Now enjoy a glass of some good Swiss wine!

GIVING BACK A group of needle crafters from the Smithtown Senior Citizens Department recently undertook a new project. Historically, they have made blankets, hats and sweater sets for donation to area hospitals and nursing homes.

At the suggestion of a local medical center, they banded together to make beautiful Twiddle Muffs, knitted or crocheted muffs accessorized with buttons, ribbons, zippers and the like. Many hospital and nursing facilities have found that with dementia and Alzheimer’s sufferers, Twiddle Muffs help ease agitation and calm the persons’ moods as they keep their hands and minds occupied.

Donations were made to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center and Mills Pond Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with more to be distributed to other local nursing facilities.

The folks at the Three Village Historical Society are busy getting ready for a holiday favorite, their annual Candlelight House Tour scheduled for Dec. 1 and 2. This year the theme will be Visions of East Setauket: Then & Now, and the tours will include five homes on Shore Road in East Setauket and Poquott as well as a stop at the St. James R.C. Church Parish Center. The event provides the opportunity for participants to explore historic homes and properties and enjoy stunning holiday décor.

Steve Healy, president of the historical society, said this will be the 39th year the society is hosting the event, and he looks forward to it every year. “We get a great response, the houses are all different, and it’s a very festive occasion,” he said.

This year’s tour is the sixth one organized by co-chairs Patty Cain, historical society vice president, and Patty Yantz, a former president. Yantz said when it came to this year’s theme the pair were inspired by the book published by the organization, “Then & Now: The Three Villages,” which includes photos of various locations in the area as they looked in the past and how they appear now.

“We always like to highlight our archives and what we’re about,” Yantz said.

“We like to take historic areas and look at how it’s developed.”

The tour has been filled with historic homes since its beginnings when decorator Eva Glaser and Mary Lou Mills came up with a way to raise funds for the Setauket Neighborhood House, which was in disrepair at the time. The structure, located at 95 Main Street, was the original home of the Three Village Historical Society’s headquarters.

The major fundraiser for the society, both Cain and Yantz said over the years more and more homeowners have offered their houses to be put on display. While decorators work on each home, many homeowners contribute input when it comes to the decorating.

Cain said she is always looking for homes to include, and when residents offer up their houses for the event, she takes

The co-chairs and decorators work for months to prepare for the weekend, and Cain said they always worry if they did enough and if there are an adequate number of volunteers. However, every year the first night proves all the hard work was worth it.

“When it’s 6 o’clock Friday night, and the candles are lit in the houses, and the first guests come in, to me that’s the best part,” Cain said.

For many who participate in the tour, it’s an event that kicks off the holiday season; something Yantz agrees with. “I’m always amazed at how beautifully decorated the homes are,” she said. “That to me is why I just can’t wait to see them. For me personally, it just sets off the whole holiday feeling and brings back childhood memories. It’s inspiring to me,” she said.

Cain said they try to mix older and newer homes on the tour; however, the newer ones must be on historic properties to be included.

Theatre Three’s ‘A Christmas Carol’

A must see Long Island holiday tradition

T

heatre Three delivers perhaps one of my most favorite holiday traditions: a classic retelling of Charles Dickens’ most beloved work, “A Christmas Carol,” right in the heart of downtown Port Jefferson. This stage adaptation is so beautifully conceived and has been so well refined over the years that it’d appear Dickens’ 174-year-old novel jumps quite literally from the pages onto the stage in a fashion that can be best described as magical.

This particular production, which is celebrating its 34th year, is nothing short of miraculous, not just for its stunning set design, incredible wardrobe and perfectly planned lighting and sound ... but also for the fact that somehow each and every year the show (while familiar) feels brand new.

Jeffrey Sanzel, the show’s director and the actor behind the famous literary curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge, shuffles the cast, set and various elements of the show, refining it and bringing new life to it each and every season.

In the long and impressive shelf life of “A Christmas Carol” there has never, in my opinion, been a better Scrooge than Jeffrey Sanzel. No actor has ever lived and breathed that character for so long and with such passion as Sanzel. Watching his character’s transformation unfold on stage is pure delight.

This year’s show beams with talent. One can’t help but admire the incredible skill of the show’s youngest cast members who perform alongside their adult counterparts as equals both in professionalism and talent. Not for a moment does any actor’s performance take you out of this whimsical Dickensian world Sanzel creates.

Steve Wangner shines as Bob Cratchit, bringing to life all the warmth and love of Scrooge’s least favorite employee. Wangner had big shoes to fill, replacing Douglas Quattrock who has long held the role.

No doubt Quattrock should be proud of his successor who masterfully carried Tiny Tim (portrayed jointly by Ryan Becker and Cameron Turner) upon his shoulders. His family dynamic especially with his wife (Suzie Dunn) and children is wonderfully endearing.

My personal favorite of the ensemble cast is Mr. Fezziwig portrayed by the cheerful George Liberman.

Though I’ve got the bias of loving his character, this actor’s presence puts an instant smile on your face and reminds you of the wholesome fun of Christmas time. His partner in crime, Mrs. Fezziwig, is portrayed by the wonderful Ginger Dalton who also excels as Mrs. Dilber ... the cockney maid of Scrooge whose comedic ability is unparalleled in the twoact show.

Megan Bush brings to life Belle, the first and only love of Scrooge and daughter of Fezziwig. Though her character’s time on stage is brief, she so perfectly captures the innocence of a first love and shows us a side of Scrooge we often forget.

By BarBara Beltrami Once Thanksgiving is over and the turkey is just a carcass in a soup pot, and the fixings are just unidentifiable messes in plastic containers, there is still a whole month and beyond in which to take advantage of fresh cranberries, those little ruby-red gems that are in seasonal abundance. Rich in vitamin C, cranberries are not just a life-support system for a sauce.

They make a fabulous pie, a delicious chutney and a moist and dense tea loaf — all perfect for holiday entertaining. And …. the tea loaf is an excellent gift from your kitchen as well.

No time to cook now? Buy them anyway and freeze them for the next occasion when you need something special. (They can be frozen for up to a year.) When you scavenge around and find them in the frosty recesses of your freezer right behind the turkey soup that was rejected in favor of a pizza, you’ll be happy to have stashed such a treasure.

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour a 9- × 5- × 3-inch loaf pan. Sift together the dry ingredients, then add the egg, juice, oil and liqueur. Stir to combine. Add cranberries, nuts, zest and extracts; mix thoroughly but do not overmix. Spread batter evenly in prepared loaf pan.

Bake 50 minutes to one hour, until cake tester inserted in middle comes out clean.

Cool 15 to 20 minutes; remove from pan when ready to serve. Serve with hot tea, coffee or chocolate with butter, orange sorbet, butter pecan or vanilla ice cream.

Eagle Realty Holding recently announced a new addition to the Stony Brook Village Center. Sweet Mama’s, also located in Northport, opened this week in the former Latitude 121 Restaurant location. A dental expansion

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore (R-Ronkonkoma) recently attended a ribbon cutting ceremony to welcome Dental365 to the community at its new Centereach location.

The dental group has locations throughout the New York Metropolitan area including Ronkonkoma and West Islip.

The event included a tour of the modern dental facility.

Afterward, an official ribbon cutting took place, followed by a small reception. Muratore presented a Certificate of Recognition to commemorate the occasion.

Giving thanks for your health

Eating well can set the table for a year of well-being Many of us give thanks for our health on Thanksgiving. Well, let’s follow through with this theme. While eating healthy may be furthest from our minds during the holidays, it is so important.

Instead of making Thanksgiving a holiday of regret, eating foods that cause weight gain, fatigue and that increase your risk for chronic diseases, you can reverse this trend while maintaining the traditional theme of what it means to enjoy a festive meal.

What can we do to turn Thanksgiving into a bonanza of good health? Phytochemicals (plant nutrients) called carotenoids have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity and are found mostly in fruits and vegetables. Carotenoids make up a family of more than 600 different substances, such as beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene and betacryptoxanthin (1).

Foods that contain these substances are orange, yellow and red vegetables and fruits and dark green leafy vegetables. Examples include sweet potato, acorn squash, summer squash, spaghetti squash, green beans, carrots, cooked pumpkin, spinach, kale, papayas, tangerines, tomatoes and Brussels sprouts.

Let’s look at the evidence.

Breast cancer effect

We know that breast cancer risk is high among women, especially on Long Island.

An American woman has an average risk of 12.4 percent for getting breast cancer (2). Therefore, we need to do everything within reason to reduce risk.

In a meta-analysis (a group of eight prospective or forward-looking studies), results show that women who were in the second to fifth quintile blood levels of carotenoids, such as alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and lutein and zeaxanthin, had significantly reduced risk of developing breast cancer (3).

Thus, there was an inverse relationship between carotenoid levels and breast cancer risk. Even modest amounts of carotenoids can have a resounding effect in potentially preventing breast cancer.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: Lou Gehrig’s disease

ALS is a disabling and feared disease.

Unfortunately, there are no effective treatments for reversing this disease. Therefore, we need to work double time in trying to prevent its occurrence.

In a meta-analysis of five prestigious observational studies, including The Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, results showed

This study involved over 1 million people with more than 1,000 who developed ALS. Those who were in the highest carotenoid level quintile had a 25 percent reduction in risk, compared to those in the lowest quintile. This difference was even greater for those who had high carotenoid levels and did not smoke, a 35 percent reduction.

According to the authors, the beneficial effects may be due to antioxidant activity and more efficient function of the power source of the cell: the mitochondria. This is a good way to prevent a horrible disease while improving your overall health.

Positive effects of healthy eating

Despite the knowledge that healthy eating has long-term positive effects, there are several obstacles to healthy eating. Two critical factors are presentation and perception.

Presentation is glorious for traditional dishes, like turkey, gravy and stuffing with lots of butter and creamy sauces. However, vegetables are usually prepared in either an unappetizing way — steamed to the point of no return, so they cannot compete with the main course — or smothered in cheese, negating their benefits, but clearing our consciences.

Many consider Thanksgiving a time to indulge and not think about the repercussions. Plant-based foods like whole grains, leafy greens and fruits are relegated to side dishes or afterthoughts. Why is it so important to change our mindsets? Believe it or not, there are significant short-term consequences of gorging ourselves.

Not surprisingly, people tend to gain weight from Thanksgiving to New Year.

This is when most gain the predominant amount of weight for the entire year.

However, people do not lose the weight they gain during this time (5). If you can fend off weight gain during the holidays, just think of the possibilities for the rest of the year.

Also, if you are obese and sedentary, you may already have heart disease. Overeating at a single meal increases your risk of heart attack over the near term, according to the American Heart Association (6). However, with a little Thanksgiving planning, you can reap significant benefits. What strategies should you employ for the best outcomes?

•Make healthy, plant-based dishes part of the main course. I am not suggesting that you forgo signature dishes, but add to tradition by making mouthwatering vegetable-based dishes for the holiday.

•Improve the presentation of vegetable dishes. Most people don’t like grilled chicken without any seasoning. Why should vegetables be different? In my family, we make sauces for vegetables, like a peanut sauce using mostly rice vinegar and infusing a teaspoon of toasted sesame oil. Good resources for appealing dishes can be found at www.

• Replace refined grains. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed that replacing wheat or refined grains with whole wheat and whole grains significantly reduced central fat, or fat around the belly (7). Not only did participants lose subcutaneous fat found just below the skin but also visceral adipose tissue, the fat that lines organs and causes chronic diseases such as cancer. For even better results, consider substituting finely chopped cauliflower for rice or other starches.

• Create a healthy environment. Instead of putting out creamy dips, processed crackers and candies as snacks prior to the meal, put out whole grain brown rice crackers, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes and healthy dips like hummus and salsa. Help people choose wisely.

• Offer healthy dessert options. Options might include dairy-free pumpkin pudding and fruit salad.

The goal should be to increase your nutrient-dense choices and decrease your emptycalorie foods. You don’t have to be perfect, but improvements during this time period have a tremendous impact — they set the tone for the new year and put you on a path to success. Why not turn this holiday into an opportunity to de-stress, rest and reverse or prevent chronic disease by consuming plenty of carotenoid-containing foods.

By Daniel Dunaief Relatively speaking, it’s a longdistance trip. A new neuron cell is manufactured in one part of a mouse brain and travels as far as 8 millimeters across the brain to the olfactory bulb, which is inside the nose.

The internal signals that trigger the movement of these neurons for this journey have been largely unknown. Recently, Linda Van Aelst, a professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and researchers in her lab published an article in the Journal of Cell Biology that highlights the role of an important protein called Dock7.

These cells, which provide neurological replenishment, go through a process in which the front of the cell pulls its way along, while a cellular motor pushes from the back, driving the cell forward.

“It’s a complex process,” said Van Aelst. “The extension of the leading process has to be tightly coordinated with the following of the cell body and the nucleus.”

Van Aelst and her postdoctoral researchers including Shinichi Nakamuta and Yu-Ting Yang showed that if the motions aren’t “tightly coordinates,” there is a block or delay in migration.

Her team used a molecular process called RNA interference, in which an RNA molecule blocked the expression of Dock7.

When they silenced Dock7, they observed that migration was impaired. Restoring the normal level of the protein brought back the migratory function.

People without this protein, or with an imbalance in this key signaling molecule, exhibit a range of problems, including epilepsy. Some people with socalled copy number variation, in which there are too many or too few genetic signals for the protein, have schizophrenia.

Van Aelst explained that it isn’t clear why there are only two main regions in the postnatal adult brain where new neuronal cells are generated.

They also play a role in social and mating behaviors.

Their exposure means these cells are often damaged and need to be replenished with cells that can collect similar information and suggest life-saving behaviors.

Newborn adult neurons contribute to olfactory and hippocampus-dependent learning and memory. Increased levels of neurogenesis in the hippocampus correlate with improved performance in hippocampus-dependent learning and memory tasks.

Impaired adult neurogenesis has been linked with neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, epilepsy, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s diseases, as well as major depression.

The difficulty in getting the cells to the right place is something that could factor into future efforts involving gene therapy. Not only would the brain need to create cells that could replace those that have lost function or died, but they would also have to make the trip to the right place and integrate into the local circuitry.

While numerous cells travel along the path, they, like trucks on a superhighway, don’t all disembark at the same place or carry the same information.

Ongoing research is working to address the subpopulations of interneurons.

Among the homes decorated for this year’s tour will be one on the land known as Tinker Bluff, which is named after the first homeowner Henry Champlin Tinker, who built a summer home overlooking Port Jefferson Harbor in the late 19th century. Another home’s west end is its original mid-1800s structure, while one house sits on a land parcel where its dock attracted Joseph Elberson, proprietor of the once local rubber factory, to buy the property to use it for a transportation line.

“There’s a lot of history here,” Cain said. “The land is history, so you may have new homes on historic land that was once a huge farm or huge shipbuilding company. It’s historic in that respect, and we’re able to bring that history to people that might not know about it.”

Visitors to St. James R.C. Church Parish Center on Route 25A will discover the church’s presepio, a tableau of life in Bethlehem at the time of Christ’s birth.

A unique Italian art form, the scene goes beyond the traditional nativity and fills an entire room.

The Dec. 1 tour includes wine and hors d’oeuvres at each home from 6 to 9 p.m. and ends with a buffet and wine reception at the parish center catered by Express Catering — a branch of Setauket’s Bagel Express — from 9 to 11 p.m. Saturday includes two options of an early breakfast at the Old Field Club in East Setauket and tour or tour only. The Saturday tour ends at 4 p.m. Tickets for Friday night and the breakfast and tour are sold out, but plenty were available for the Saturday tour at press time.

Women’s hoops starts season at 3-0 for first time in Div I era Shania Johnson scored a season-high 23 points as Stony Brook women’s basketball held on in a tight contest to top Fairleigh Dickinson University, 56-51, Nov. 19 in nonconference play at the Rothman Center. With the victory, Stony Brook improves to 3-0 to begin a season for the first time in the Division I era.

“FDU is a very well coached team,” Stony Brook head coach Caroline McCombs said.

“They execute offensively and really keep you off balance on the defensive end. I was proud of our team today, in a close ball game, to find a way to win on the road.”

Stony Brook shot 18-for-47 on the afternoon, hitting five 3-pointers.

Johnson had six rebounds and four assists in a team-most 38 minutes played. The junior transfer shot 8-for-15 from the field, nailing all five of the program’s 3-pointers in the victory. The reigning America East Player of the Week has scored double-digit point totals in each of her first three games at Stony Brook.

Jerell Matthews chipped in nine points of her own, including a pair of key foul shots with 24 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Cheyenne Clark added seven points and a team-best nine rebounds, while India Pagan and Giolibeth Perez each scored four points.

At halftime, Johnson led the Seawolves with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Stony Brook returned home Nov. 22 to host Farmingdale State University at Island Federal Credit Union Arena but results were not available by press time.

Hail Mary pass as time expires wins it for Stony Brook football Wide receiver Harrison Jackson pulled down a 35-yard Hail Mary pass from Joe Carbone as time expired Nov. 18 to cap the Stony Brook football team’s 20-19 comeback win over University of Maine at the Alfond Sports Stadium to close out the regular season.

“For Joe [Carbone] to trust in me, to throw the ball to me, I’m blessed,” Jackson said.

“Everyone played a crucial part in this win.”

The Seawolves (9-2, 7-1 Colonial Athletic Association) trailed 19-7 entering the fourth quarter, but Carbone’s two touchdown passes against the Black Bears (4-6, 3-5 CAA) sealed the deal, with the final drive of the game lasting just four plays for 73 yards in 31 seconds.

Stony Brook’s win secured a second-place finish in the CAA football standings behind league champion James Madison University.

“Maine played really terrific defensively,” Stony Brook head coach Chuck Priore said.

“They had us off balance.”

The host team cracked the scoreboard first with a 40-yard touchdown pass with 7:03 left in the opening quarter. A two-point conversion attempt failed. The Black Bears expanded their lead on a rush from three yards out by Josh Mack with 1:44 left in the first, but the twopoint conversion also failed on the second try.

“Their running back [Josh Mack] is legit,” Priore said. “But we kept him pretty bottled up for most of the game and shut them out in the second half.”

Stony Brook got on the board when running back Donald Liotine rushed for 10 yards with 3:08 left in the second quarter. Nick Courtney’s point-after kick attempt was good.

Maine reclaimed a two score lead two plays later with a 59-yard catch and run. The point after was good.

The Seawolves moved closer with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Carbone to wide receiver Donavin Washington in the right corner of the end zone. The drive was six plays for 80 yards and highlighted by a 65-yard catch and run by Jackson.

Linebacker Noah McGinty collected 13 tackles, while defensive backs Chris Cooper and Tyrice Beverette added 12 and 11 stops, respectively.

“Games are won as complete games,” Priore said. “You always tell the kids to play to the last tick of the clock and literally that happened today. It is a lesson to learn.”

Stony Brook will host Lehigh University in the opening round of the NCAA Division I tournament at LaValle Stadium Nov. 25 at 2 p.m.

Volleyball sweeps Binghamton for first AE championship title The Stony Brook volleyball team claimed its first America East championship as it knocked off second-seeded Binghamton University with a 3-0 victory at University Gym, 25-20, 25-18, 25-19. The Nov. 18 sweep was the second of the postseason for the Seawolves, who have punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament with the title victory. Kiani Kerstetter, LeAnne Sakowicz and McKyla Brooks were all named to the All-Championship team, while Brooks earned Most Outstanding Player honors.

“I could not be more proud of this group,” Stony Brook head coach Kristin Belzung said.

“They were locked in from the start defensively — both blocking and digging — and I thought that gave us a ton of confidence. On top of that, this group didn’t let anything get to them all weekend. They took care of each other and played for something bigger than themselves.”

Stony Brook jumped out to a 9-4 lead in

the opening set, forcing Binghamton to use an early timeout. The Seawolves continued to push until Binghamton was able to put together a 5-0 run to get back within one. Stony Brook scored four of the final five points in the first set, three coming on kills by Brooks.

The Seawolves put together a 7-1 rally in the second set to create some distance early on.

The Bearcats used their final timeout as Stony Brook took a 16-9 lead. Brooks sealed the win with a block at the net for the two-set lead.

It was more of the same in the third set as Stony Brook again used an early rally to control the momentum.

The Seawolves also swept top-seed University at Albany in the semifinals and had not topped either team during the regular season.

The selection show for the NCAA volleyball tournament will be held Nov. 26 at 9 p.m. The show will air on ESPNU.

Jedis and Siths called a truce for the event which celebrated 40 years of the classic film series with a visit from the Endor Light Saber Guild, Star Wars characters and vendors.

Engeman Theater’s ‘Frosty’ is a magical holiday treat

By Rita J. Egan That jolly, happy soul has returned to Northport. The family musical “Frosty” opened Nov. 18 at the John W. Engeman Theater and families filled the theater eager for the annual holiday treat.

Directed by Richard T. Dolce, the production is a delightful twist on the story “Frosty the Snowman.” On the Northport stage, the snowman comes to life with the help of a scarf that is magical due to love instead of a magician’s hat and quickly becomes best friends with a little girl named Jenny.

When Jenny’s mother, who is also the mayor of Chillsville, is tricked into signing a contract with the evil Ethel Pierpot to build a machine to get rid of all the snow in Chillsville, Jenny must find a way to keep Frosty from melting.

Kevin Burns as the narrator opens the show, and it’s clear from the beginning that the audience will be part of the story. Burns easily interacts with the children and gets them involved. He also draws the most laughs as he goes from being bundled up for winter to wearing less and less each time he makes an appearance on stage to demonstrate how warm Chillsville is getting.

Kate Keating as Jenny is endearing as the sweet young girl who has no friends but possesses a warm heart. With touching vocals during “No Friends,” the audience connects with her at once.

her, which was apparent as they chatted with the actress during the autograph session after the show.

Matthew Rafanelli delivers Frosty perfectly with a sweet, friendly speaking and singing voice. He and Keating sound great together when they sing “One Friend Is Better Than No Friends.”

Ashley Brooke rounds out the cast beautifully, playing a loving, nurturing mother and mayor who realizes Chillsville is perfect the way it is no matter what Ethel Pierpot says.

The musical ends on the right note with the whole cast singing the Frosty theme song after doing an excellent job on the ensemble number “Thanks for You.” Young audience members were delighted with the many opportunities when the actors encouraged them to participate.

An especially cute part of the production is when the narrator asks the children in the audience for ideas to solve Frosty and Jenny’s dilemma at the end of the first act.

After intermission, those ideas are shared with the characters. “Frosty” also provides a few fun opportunities for the actors to come into the audience, and the show contains many magical moments.

This time of year is perfect to create special memories, and the Engeman’s production of “Frosty” is guaranteed to add magic to any family’s holiday season. While the story is geared toward younger audiences, older siblings, parents and grandparents will find plenty to enjoy in the show, too.

Theatergoers can meet Frosty and friends in the lobby for photos and autographs after the show. An autograph page is located towards the back of the program.

When Sydney Boals touched the wall during the state championship preliminary round of the 200-yard medley relay a second behind the swimmer next to her, she knew she had some stiff competition.

“I knew I had to have that fast turn, have a good breakout and sprint all the way to finish,” the freshman said. “I knew I had to go hard, so when I was swimming I just kept my head down, thought about trying my best and sprinted.”

As her Ward Melville swimming teammate Kaitlyn Ehlers capped off the race at Ithaca College Nov. 18, the quartet looked up at the scoreboard to see a 1 minute, 47.98 second finish, good for third place.

“I was super happy, and I thought everyone else was too,” said Sydney, who swam the breaststroke as the third leg. “We didn’t have our best time, unfortunately, but it was still a really good race and we made our coaches proud.”

Senior Victoria Bogdanski and sophomore Riley Gavigan were also members of the state championship-placing relay. Ward Melville head coach Chris Gordon said he was excited to see his young team put up the numbers it did.

“Not everyone gets to have this experience,” he said before talking about Bogdanski in particular. “She was thrilled, and being a senior the moment really hit her. There were tears of happiness and sadness knowing her 10-year swimming journey was coming to an end. She’s a great person, a great kid. She works really hard. You get what you put into it, and she put in the effort.”

The four girls hadn’t swum as a unit until the county competition, where the relay team placed first in 1:47.86. The Patriots were the No. 5 seed heading into the state preliminary round, and exited the first heat in the No. 4 spot before placing third in the finals.

“I was watching, shouting, getting excited with each turn, seeing if they hit the wall well, come off the wall hard — I just hoped they’d come out of the water happy with their time,” Gordon said as he was watching his relay in the finals. “They didn’t know each other’s cadence, their pace and it’s a pretty good job on their part getting together and getting in sync for such big meets.”

Boals finished with a personal best time of 1:55.19 in the 200 freestyle, good for 12th and just shy of breaking a school record. Gavigan placed 10th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.41.

“They swim all these — Chris Gordon events on Friday and come back on Saturday to swim them all again and it’s tiring,” Gordon said. “Their bodies can only give so many ‘A’-type efforts in a row in such a short period of time, and I thought their positive mindsets were great even after they finished.”

Riley finished the day in high spirits, saying her time wasn’t going to get her down.

This holiday season I’m thankful for the water I drink, the air I breathe and the love in my heart. I’m grateful for the nine wonderful years I got to spend with my beautiful brown-eyed corgi Lucy, which warms me more than any fireplace ever could; my best friend and partner-in-crime Joey who has helped me learn and grow; and for my strong, independent mother who is my model, my teacher and guiding light.

This Thanksgiving I’m grateful for the basic necessities of life such as a roof over my head, clothes on my back, food and clean water to nourish me and, most important of all, the good health enjoyed by me and my loved ones. I know it sounds like a cliché but after surviving the recession after my former company moved to New Jersey, and the passing of two uncles and two aunts over the last few years, I realize more and more how important just being here and the basics in life are. All the rest is just gravy.

Efforts of the Trump administration to deport many hardworking, fine Latinos are highly offensive. It is important to note that certain ethnic groups, such as the people we call Latinos, came to this hemisphere long before other Europeans, except for some brave Scandinavian explorers who explored the Northeast coast. Just look at the names of towns and villages and states, etc., especially in the West. So many names are Spanish: California, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, San Antonio, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Sacramento, San Diego and on and on.

The huge Spanish or Latino influence in this country came into existence many decades before other Europeans began to arrive. The Spanish were the first Europeans to inhabit the Western Hemisphere— led by an Italian, Columbus. America was named after another Italian, Amerigo Vespucci, I proudly say, since I am of Italian descent.

With a few exceptions, people

from Spain inhabited almost all the countries south of us, from Mexico to Chile. Spanish is the leading language there.

The Spanish even founded the first permanent city in North America: St. Augustine, in Florida (and “Florida” is a Spanish word) and inhabited areas of our far west and southwest long before other Europeans arrived and decades before the United States was established. Thus, the Spanish are in no sense strangers or newcomers to this land.

It is outrageous for the Trump administration to mistreat Spanish immigrants so shabbily — by tightening or introducing unfriendly and quasi-prejudicial rules or by building hateful walls. The Spanish have made a huge mark on our country and an even greater one on the countries south of us. Of course, let’s not forget that our Native Americans, whom we should greatly respect but who have been terribly treated, had already been in North and South America

for millennia before Europeans.

That is another story.

The Trump administration’s attitude towards Latinos is a sickening, moral crime. I suggest that Mr. Trump go revisit the Statue of Liberty, an immense and outstandingly thoughtful gift from France, and read Emma Lazarus’ words: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” That is America’s primary reason for existence. Let people come here to establish better lives for themselves.

Every American is either from another country or is the descendant of people from another country. Let’s remember what our Declaration of Independence correctly says — that we are all equals. No ethnic or racial or religious group is superior to any other.

Study America’s history, Mr. Trump, and stop your disgraceful, embarrassing, thoughtless, anti-American actions.

Comparing letters side by side Mr. Jim Soviero is impervious to argument. He clearly doesn’t listen to what he himself writes, let alone what others write. His letters in The Village Times Herald, “Of leftist violence, Democrat-KKK connection,” Nov. 9, and “Ignoring left wing violence and haters,” Sept. 14, and my own letter “President Trump’s shameful apologia,” Oct. 12, really need to be read side by side. I don’t have space to keep repeating what was said.

On Oct. 12 I said Soviero had supported President Trump’s shameful defense of the Nazi, KKK and other white supremacists’ murderous riot in Charlottesville (good people and violence on both sides) in his Sept.

14 letter with the right’s usual “whataboutism”. Soviero in his Nov. 9 letter wrote it wasn’t a defense of Trump because the president’s name was never mentioned. Soviero himself raised the supposed similarity of the minuscule group antifa’s logo to a German Communist logo from 1932 as proof that the murderous Nazi-KKK side and the peaceful-until-attacked anti-Nazi counter-protesters

were equally violent. I had noted that his source, right-wing blogs, also circulated a 2009 photo of a Greek with the antifa logo photoshopped onto his back attacking a policeman as “proof” of current antifa violence. Soviero perverts this comment into my denial of any left-wing violence.

Soviero also mentioned the KKK’s “long sordid alliance with the Democrat (sic) Party.” I agreed with him. It is something we lefties have long observed, and I quoted Rachel Maddow’s detailed and accurate indictment of President Wilson and the 1920s Democrats that Soviero contemptuously dismisses as “pretty correct,” although “a known Trump hater.” Of course.

Maddow also noted that Fred Trump, Donald’s father, was a KKK supporter, arrested in 1927.

Soviero claims that it defies logic that a Republican president would abandon free blacks and anti-slavery whites to the pro-slavery Democrats and the KKK in the South, but that is exactly what Rutherford B. Hayes undeniably did in 1876 — to flip enough southern disputed electoral votes to squeak in, he

agreed to remove U.S. troops from the ex-Confederate states when in office. I wrote “The KKK unleashed a reign of terror that swept the ex-slaveholders into power, and southern AfricanAmericans lost almost all rights, not regained until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.” Soviero amazingly rephrases this sentence and then says I never said it.

Let’s be clear. The Radical Republicans (Thaddeus Stevens, Charles Sumner, et al.) tried to defend ex-slaves against ex-slaveholder governments that enacted the infamous “black codes” in 1865 and 1866, against the veto obstructions of ex-slaveholder President Andrew Johnson, and took veto-proof control of Congress in 1866.

Ulysses S. Grant, elected in 1868, proactively supported the movement for Reconstruction that democratized (little “d”) the South from 1866 to 1876, with the execution of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments. The Republican Party betrayed that movement in 1876.

ere we are, Thanksgiving Day, and I’d like to share some things I’m not thankful for. I recognize, of course, all that I do have to be thankful for, but in this moment and in this year it seems fitting to make a not-so-thankful list.

Nicknames: They’ve become ubiquitous. I never liked the nicknames Joe Girardi had for all the Yankees, usually adding a “y” at the end of their last names.

Why? Is Gardner too hard to say?

Does he think anyone is a “dynamo,” “real winner” or “miracle”? No, I suspect he doesn’t because that might mean that their superpowers would be comparable or, gasp, stronger than his.

Pundits: Everyone on TV, in the comment section of news articles and on the internet seem to know better than everyone else. Some of these pundits seem to be playing a game of mad libs where they change the names, dates and details about their punditry, but their perspectives and their “shame, shame, shame, he’s a bad Democrat/ Republican” outrage get old incredibly quickly. If you have no new thoughts, then don’t pretend to offer something new.

I’d enjoy it if a newscaster said, “And now we’re going to turn to someone that hates Republicans who, no

Fake news: It’s a convenient label for those who don’t like what they hear. It’s a way to undermine the messenger. I know there are news organizations who play fast and loose with the facts. There are also members of the media who have made a point of blending editorial and news, decrying the lack of moral — or even logical — leadership in Washington. Still, many reporters are eager to find facts and to give people a chance to make decisions for themselves. Ultimately, many journalists are serving society by shining lights in dark corners and by sharing information that informs the public. Without the news, people would need to rely on official sources to tell them their version of the truth.

That doesn’t sound very democratic.

taste so good and why can’t I stop at just one or six pieces? Can’t they add string beans or cauliflower to the pie to make it slightly less palatable?

Misspellings and myselfisms: I know that seems incredibly elitist and English-language snobby of me, but I bristle at emails urging me to do something before it’s too late. I would like to reply that it’s “to” late to correct their emails. As for the “myself” problem, I have heard someone say several times in the last few weeks, “If you have a problem, you should talk to Ted or myself.” Really? My problem is that if you took Ted out of that sentence, you’d be suggesting people talk to myself.

Teenage odors: Yes, I know the teenagers are growing, their hormones are surging and they are some of the most active people on Earth.

Still, get a group of them in a room, in a car or in any confined space and you might long for the innocent days of diapers and spit-up.
