A Chapin concert for Children’s Hunger Awareness

BY NICOLE GEDDES Long Island Cares — The Harry Chapin Food Bank hosted a free concert Nov. 3 at Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University featuring Tom Chapin and Friends to raise awareness for children’s hunger and food insecurity on Long Island.

Students through fourth-grade from Riverhead, Hauppauge, East Islip, Eastern Suffolk BOCES and Brookhaven school districts attended the concert.

“They were very excited to help the community on Long Island and participate in a concert with great songs from Tom Chapin,” said third-grade teacher Pam Trapanotto of Bretton Woods Elementary School in the Hauppauge school district.

AsparaGus, a character from Long Island Cares, and Wolfie, Stony Brook University’s mascot, greeted children as they arrived. In support of the 70,000 children in need on Long Island, students brought in nonperishable food items.

The Staller Center Main Stage Theatre was filled with 700 students, teachers, chaperones and other attendees, who sang along with Tom Chapin as he began the concert with a song about catching the bus on time. Students were invited to sing and clap along to the music.

Robert and Mary Lanza, from Middlesex, New Jersey, brought their sons, 4-yearold Robinson and 2-year-old Alexander, to see the performance.

“I was searching for kids performances and came across Long Island Cares — The Harry Chapin Food Bank concert,” Robert Lanza said. “I called and spoke with Claire Fratello from Long Island Cares and she sent us tickets.”

The students were completely engrossed as they learned how to make music using their voices, hands, laps and feet and how to sing a song in sign language. Many knew the names of the instruments that were being played, from the bass guitar to the concertina.

While music and the arts are important to Tom Chapin, a three-time Grammy Award winner, the issue of hunger is even more important to him.

His brother, the late Harry Chapin, was a famous songwriter and recording artist but he was also known for his passion to combat world hunger, and often donated proceeds from concerts to various organizations to aid in the fight. He co-founded World Hunger Year and established hunger hotlines in New York City and Long Island Cares Food Bank.

“Once upon a time on Long Island people farmed their own foods,” said Tom Chapin.

A hunger-free Long Island is the mission of Long Island Cares — The Harry Chapin Food Bank. The goals of the organization include educating the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island, improving food security for families and sponsoring programs that help

families achieve self-sufficiency.

Island Federal Credit Union sponsored the event, with its CEO and president, Bret Sears; Paule Pachter, Long Island Cares CEO and president; Alan Inkles, director of Staller Center for the Arts; and Paul Newland, the Staller’s outreach director, all working with staff to help make the event possible.

A total of 750 pounds of food was collected at the concert, the equivalent of 625 meals, according to Robin Amato, communications director of Long Island Cares.

Bellone: Close loopholes to protect against sex offenders Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) was joined recently by Parents for Megan’s Law and advocates to call upon New York State lawmakers to protect the county’s Community Protection Act — the nation’s toughest sex offender registration and verification law.

The county executive called on the state to codify the Community Protection Act and to close current loopholes that currently exist within New York State law.

“I have always been committed to ensuring that our residents are protected against sex offenders who have committed crimes against our most vulnerable, our children,” Bellone said in a statement. “Sexual violence knows no boundaries, and could affect all of us regardless of age and gender. That is why I am asking our lawmakers to take a stand and to codify these laws that will continue to enforce the strict monitoring, enforcement and verifications standards that we adopted in Suffolk County.”

Bellone and advocates are calling on New York State lawmakers to: • Mandate that all Level 3 sex offenders and offenders who have committed an act against a minor must not reside within 1,000 feet of a school facility.

• Authorize counties or their designees to verify the residency and job sites of registered sex offenders.

• Authorize local municipalities to require homeless sex offenders who seek housing through the county to call the Suffolk County Police Department each night to confirm their domicile for the evening.

• Require an affirmative obligation of

all sex offenders to cooperate and confirm information required as part of their sex offender designation.

Suffolk County’s Community Protection Act was adopted in 2013 and became the nation’s first public-private partnership ensuring that the region’s children and residents were protected. In addition to becoming the nation’s leading sex offender enforcement and management program, it provided ancillary resources to ensure and verify that registered sex offenders were in compliance with all elements of state and county laws.

In working with Parents for Megan’s Law, the county developed a national model to ensure sex offender registration compliance and to prevent registered sex offenders from re-offending.

Since the Community Protection Act’s inception, nearly 300 Facebook pages — more than 200 of them Suffolk County registrants — have been removed by Facebook after leads were provided by CPA staff.

Some 98 percent of Level 2 registrants and more than 94 percent of Level 3 registrants are in compliance with photograph requirements. Parents for Megan’s Law’s sex offender management team has transmitted more than 3,000 leads to law enforcement personnel that has led to updates to the sex offender registry, open investigations or arrests for failure to register.

Since the act was put into place, Parents for Megan’s Law has conducted more than 10,000 in-person home verification visits for Level 1, 2 and 3 registrants.

Incidents and arrests, Oct. 31 — Nov. 5 Weed at Walmart

A 22-year-old man and an 18-year-old man, both from Centereach, were seated in a 2007 Mercury in the parking lot of Walmart at the Centereach mall at about 1:30 p.m. Nov. 2 when an officer nearby smelled marijuana coming from the car, according to police. They were both arrested, and the 22-year-old was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana. The 18-year-old was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

At about 1:30 a.m. Nov. 1, a 24-year-old man from Hempstead was driving a 2015 Nissan on Nicolls Road near Middle Country Road in Centereach when he was pulled over for a traffic stop, police said. During the stop, the driver lied about his name, according to police. He was also driving without a license and possessed marijuana.

He was arrested and charged with false personation, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of marijuana.

At Target on Pond Path in South Setauket at about 4:30 p.m. Nov. 2, a 23-year-old woman from Holbrook stole more than $1,000 of electronic devices, according to police. She was arrested and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny. After her arrest, police discovered she also stole more than $1,000 of electronic devices from Target on Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore about an hour earlier. She was charged with another count of fourth-degree grand larceny for that incident.

In spite of his busy work life, he kept in touch with his family, writing letters to his children when he couldn’t be with them. Today, John Tyler is the earliest former president with living grandchildren, Lyon Gardiner Tyler, born in 1924, and Harrison Ruffin Tyler, born in 1928.

Gelinas Junior High School piano player Amy Liu has been selected as one of 12 students from New York State to perform at the 11th annual NYSSMA Piano Showcase in Rochester during the 2016 NYSSMA Winter Conference. This is the second year she was chosen for showcase at this event.

To receive this high honor, Amy earned a perfect 100 on her NYSSMA Level 6 solo, a positive adjudicator recommendation and

well-received video application. At the conference she will be performing Danzas Argentinas, Movement 3.

Amy is a dedicated musician who began her piano study at the age of 5 and was accepted to Manhattan School of Music precollege as a piano major in May. In addition to piano, she also performs in the Gelinas wind ensemble on both flute and piccolo.

The pair was selected for this honor based on performance at the grade 9 to 12 tryout.

Matt represented the school on the senior team and Alex represented on the underclassman team.

According to Ward Melville coach Alex Piccirillo, the “two young men represented the Three Village community with class, sportsmanship and hard work.” Piccirillo was also selected by his peers as the Suffolk County All-Stars coach.

Barbara Fletcher, 82, of St. James, formerly a longtime Setauket resident, died Oct. 12. She was born Sept.

26, 1934, in Wo o d s i d e , the daughter of Leo and Mary O’Reilly.

Barbara, aka “Bo,” was a homemaker and wonderful mother. She worked for Section XI Athletics for a number of years and volunteered at Our Daily Bread at St. James R.C. Church in Setauket, Mather Hospital Thrift Shop and Three Village Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed golf, tennis, reading and spending time with family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, David (Sandee), Daniel (Nancy), Christopher (Margaret), Laurie (Karen) and Mary (Vincent); 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her brother Leo; and many other family members and friends. Her husband John preceded her in death.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of Setauket. Services were held at St. James R.C. Church in Setauket and interment followed at the church cemetery.

George James Becker II

George James Becker II, 59, of South Setauket, died Oct. 2. He was born May 16, 1957, in Queens, the son of George and Muriel Becker.

Jamie was a printer for Thermofisher.

He was also a volunteer firefighter for Setauket Fire Department from 1995 to 2006.

He had a great sense of humor and loved the Yankees, music, yard work and spending time with his family.

Janakiram R. Naidu

The soul of Janakiram Ramaswamy Naidu, John to his siblings, Jan to his family and friends, began its journey to the beyond on Friday, Oct. 14.

A brilliant scientist, a dutiful son, a loving husband, a caring brother, a doting uncle, a generous mentor and a wonderful human being, Jan was a gentleman till the end. Those who knew him remember his warm smile.

As an ecologist, he dedicated his life to the protection of the environment through his work at Brookhaven National Laboratory. As a boss, he was firm but patient, setting standards of excellence that one was inspired to reach. There are many who owe him for the push in the right direction he gave their work and consequently their lives.

To his siblings and extended family, he was the ideal they looked up to. His was the success story, the first in their family to make it from India to the USA and live the American dream. To his wife Veena, he was one who stood by her in sickness and in health. To the many friends he made over the years, he was their anchor in times of distress, the one to go to when things were down. The lives he touched

were that much richer.

Emil Dag Eilertsen

Emil Dag Eilertsen, 63, of Setauket, passed on Oct. 9. He was born in Rockville Centre, on Sept. 29, 1953.

Emil graduated from Smithtown High School East and was a Vietnam-era U.S. Marine. He worked as a truck driver for several years and continued his career for the United States Post Office upon retirement. He was an avid sailor on the waters of the Setauket and Port Jefferson harbors and Long Island Sound.

He was a caregiver and devoted son to his mother and spent his remaining years at The Long-Island State Veterans Homes Adult Day Health Care program.

Emil is survived by his mother, Eva Margreth Eilertsen, and his sister, Kim Kari Eilertsen. His father Emil Roy Eilertsen preceded him in death.

The Eilertsen family wishes to thank all those who have supported our family over the years to give Emil the best quality of life and love and support of us at this time.

Journalists’ work will be cut out for them going forward One thing that cannot be forgotten in the aftermath of one of the most remarkable and shocking nights in American history is how we were failed by our fourth estate. Polls and projections, save a few here and there, for months gave Donald Trump little to no chance of securing the presidency Nov. 8.

This is not because of a slant or bias in polling data but in a complete lack of awareness for a ground swell of sentiment that was made very clear once actual numbers started pouring in on election night, rendering the theoretical data we’d seen for months obsolete. Donald Trump’s shocking victory was not a product of media bias but of a total media ignorance for what can now be classified as a majority of the country’s feelings when it came time to pull a lever or fill in a circle.

This is not to say the media should have given credence to the percentage of voters who cast their ballots Tuesday with less than the purest of intentions, but instead to the political pundits like Corey Lewan-

dowski and Sean Hannity who for weeks used their platforms to warn of a silent vote lurking, waiting to finally make their voices heard when the time was right.

What it should do is light a fire under the people now tasked with covering an administration and constituency that believes in opening up libel laws — making frequent lawsuits against journalists far more likely — and has repeatedly accused the media of trying to rig our most sacred freedom as Americans in favor of the other candidate.

Our work as journalists will never be more difficult, less appreciated or more important than it will be in the next four years. We need to fundamentally change the way the job is perceived and defined by the millions of voters who selected Trump, no matter how difficult that task may be, or how wrong we may believe they are. Unfortunately, perception is reality. I shudder to think that perhaps a chunk of voters decided to stay home Tuesday because polling numbers suggested the race was over weeks ago.

A large part of our job as journalists is covering the town, village and school board meetings that tend to have a more immediate impact on everyday life than federal politics. They are woefully vacant in most cases and admittedly covered in lackluster fashion. That falls at the feet of the media and the public. The lesson that should be gleaned across the board from this election cycle is that apathy and ignorance are not acceptable excuses.

And for those who believe there was a media conspiracy against your candidate, who simultaneously fight tooth and nail for the sanctity of the Second Amendment, don’t forget about the importance of the First Amendment. It’s what allowed pockets of Trump supporters in corners of the nation to spew their passions free of persecution, and that’s the way it should be. Today I woke up with a stronger determination than ever to be an ally. An ally to the LGBTQ community, to the Black Lives Matter community, to the Muslim community, the Hispanic community and every other community that woke up this morning feeling scared of the future.

I had gay friends and relatives reach out to me last night as the results were becoming clearer, wondering if they’ll still be able to get married, to adopt children, to feel equal. They need to know they still have support behind them.

As much as those fears made me want to cry and shut down, the feeling of making sure they knew I was on their side and ready to fight for them was stronger.

But then came the embarrassment.

It is unacceptable to me that it took Donald Trump becoming president to feel this strongly about being the loudest ally

I can for these communities. It took this dark of a cloud for me to see the light and promise to support like I never have before.

Voting against him clearly was not enough. Crying out and insulting the people who did vote for him isn’t either.

America has been called the great experiment. My God, does that feel accurate today more than ever. We need to keep this experiment moving in the right direction with inclusiveness. This is our country; we do not stop calling ourselves American because we disagree with our new leader.

That’s when we lose.

Those, like me, who feel despair after last night’s results can still win. Not can — we must. It has never been more crucial to stand up for those who have felt oppressed during this election cycle. If we don’t lend our voice to those who feel

voiceless, then we are truly going backwards in this country.

Every American has the right to choose their presidential candidate. Almost every point of view is understandable from a certain angle, once you put yourself in someone else’s shoes.

Now put yourself in the shoes of the communities today who are terrified of a Trump administration. They are just as American as those who voted for him.

They voted differently, but they accept the results and the new leader of this country.

And the rest of the country damn well better do the same for them, as an American.

With liberty and justice for all — not just pretty words, but a founding principle.

Embarrassed for our country. I feel like one half of the population doesn’t care much about the second half, and I just hope it plays out and works out better than we expect.

Why is this even a question why it matters who someone loves or what gender they identify with. It is repulsive to me, and I’m honestly having a hard time finding hope right now. The only thing I can say as a positive outlook is that this is just setting up for a bigger comeback.

He’s probably going to be a one-term president, and this just gives us a chance to come back and unite. I think there’s going to be a lot of people who are going to be really bothered by this, and they’re going to come back and it’s going to swing, like it always does. I was raised with the real ideals of feminism that it’s equal rights regardless of their religion, color of skin, gender, and I think that it’s ridiculous that it’s going to be 2017 and we’re still debating these kinds of things. It’s disgusting.

Patriots fall to Smithtown East in Class AA semis

By Bill landon The Smithtown East girls’ volleyball team is peaking at the right time.

The team took care of business in the Class AA semifinals Nov. 7, avenging a semifinal loss to Ward Melville last season. The No. 2 Bulls came away victorious at home in straight sets this time around against the No. 3 Patriots, 25-20, 25-12 and 25-23, to advance to the finals. The team will take on No. 1 Connetquot at Suffolk County Community College’s Brentwood campus Nov. 10 at 8 p.m.

“I thought we were pretty consistent with our serving, and I just knew we could get it together,” said Smithtown East junior outside hitter Morgan Catalonatto. “Now we’ll just continue do what we’ve been doing all season long.”

After a 5-5 tie in the opening set, the Bulls put together a string of service points. Couple that with crowd-gasping defense, and the team jumped out to a 24-19 advantage.

Serving break point was junior setter Brooke Berroyer, who led her team to victory with 28 assists.

Ward Melville lost to the Bulls Oct. 18 in five sets, but the semifinal matchup was different.

The Bulls were everywhere on the court — high above the net, flat on the floor — and dig after dig, Smithtown East savored its advantage. Senior outside hitter and co-captain Haley Anderson went on a service tare and rattled off seven unanswered points to put her team out front 12-5 in the second set.

A threat in any row, Anderson also tallied 14 kills and 14 digs in the contest.

“As a team we needed to keep our composure, focus on each point, one point at a time, and not harp on the little mistakes,” Ander-

Berroyer, from the service line, led the Bulls to the tying point, and on the next serve, helped her team to a 24-23 advantage. Serving again for the go-ahead score, the Bulls made it 24-23. Berroyer, like she’d done in each of the

three sets, scored the final point for her team.

“We have a shot to win the county [championship] against probably the best team in the state — Connetquot,” Alamia said.

“We’re going to go there, give our best shot and I think we’ll be all right.”

son said. “Steph Berdon really stepped it up — who is our middle — and Brooke Berroyer, she played well and that helped us out.”

Ward Melville began making mental errors — sending a service out of bounds and dropping two balls, which prompted Ward Melville head coach Charlie Fernandes to call timeout.

“We’ve been chasing ourselves in terms of unforced errors all season long, but in the past two playoff games, they really cut down [on these],” Fernandes said. “I think tonight we were a little nervous and a little jumpy.”

Seizing the opportunity, the Bulls surged ahead 20-11 before an unforced error. Ward Melville wouldn’t score again though, and Smithtown East tallied the final five points to put the set away.

Smithtown East head coach George Alamia said he was surprised following the first two sets, knowing what Ward Melville has been able to accomplish on the court.

“I knew that the third set was going to be the toughest game — that’s an unbelievable program over there,” he said. “We followed their lead when I first started this program in 2005. It’s like the Patriots in the NFL, [but in volleyball], it’s the Ward Melville Patriots you follow. [You follow] a winning team, one that’s won a lot of championships, and I have tremendous respect for Charlie Fernandes.”

Momentum began to shift midway through the third set when the Patriots, who trailed from the opening volley, clawed their way back to draw within a point, 13-12. The team wasn’t going to go down without a fight.

Ward Melville’s senior outside hitter Lara Atalay dished up a service kill to tie the game at 13-13, and scored again to give Ward Melville its first lead in the set. Both teams traded points to knot the score at 18-18. Again, it was back and forth as the Bulls scored the next three points, only to have the Patriots answer with three of their own to retie the game at 2121. After a service error, Ward Melville scored next to retie the game at 22-22 and followed it

An immigrant’s reaction to the presidential results

Coming together Well, that was a wild ride.

But now it’s over.

As the sun rises on a new day in America and the dust settles, President-elect Donald J. Trump can bask in the knowledge that, in an election that was not rigged, he won.

We are reminded of “The Candidate” — the character Bill McKay, played by Robert Redford in the 1972 film of the same name — who wonders aloud after his extraordinary and unexpected win: “What do we do now?”

President-elect Trump was chosen by a majority of Americans in a Brexit-type upset, but he will serve as the president of all Americans. He is now tasked with healing the wounds and bringing the country together.

He promised to call upon the best people to advise him and we hope he will do that. Some of the best people may be found on the other side of the aisle. We hope his strikingly unconventional victory will yield a unique governing style that will unify a disparate Congress and enable the business of government to proceed without impediment.

We hope he will ascend to the presidency demonstrating the demeanor the job requires now that he no longer has to prove that he is an outsider and a rebel, and that he will make decisions in a measured and thoughtful way.

And we’d love to see a flamboyant demonstration of his out-ofthe-box thinking that will serve as a unifying symbol to all Americans. Perhaps the nomination of a noted constitutional scholar to the Supreme Court? Barack Obama will be available when he exits the Oval Office.

In the meantime, the most important job for the legacy of President Obama still lies ahead. He is now tasked with convincing the 55 percent of Americans who make up his current approval rating that, for better or worse, we must come together. As he has done consistently for eight years, we expect he will lead by example and with grace.

Reflecting on last night’s election results made me realize that despite living in this country for over four decades, I don’t feel at home. When my family moved here from Colombia looking for a better future we endured many hardships, but I believe by most accounts we have been successful. However, being an immigrant, I am still puzzled over how I feel about belonging to a place that I can call home, while haven’t really felt very patriotic while here, or even at home in my youth when I lived in the country where I was born.

I am not doubtful about my commitment to my family and to my profession, which entails doing what I can to make the

country a better place through education, but I don’t understand what those folks who apparently voted for change want.

Was the choice they made the only sensible one?

I take pride in the exercise of my right as a citizen to vote and in encouraging my children to exercise their civic right and duty to vote, as we did last night.

However, I have this nagging sensation that being a successful immigrant and not feeling animosity toward those who are better off, while at the same time trying to sympathize with those who are less fortunate, makes me an oddity. I feel a dilemma between giving up what makes one culturally and ethnically

unique and assimilating perspectives needed to become part of the mainstream culture of the country one has chosen to live in.

Yet those traditional values from my country of birth must be kept to retain an identity when one doesn’t feel at home.

I guess the best perspective is to continue to regard myself as a work in progress, despite the uncertainty in how to react when trying to make sense of the behavior of people, which I believe, is based more on their feelings than on reason.

A congressman calls for unity This year’s election cycle has been one of the most dramatic and polarizing in our nation’s history. To move our country forward from here, unity amongst the American people will be the most critical necessity. Ideological differences will always exist, but the pursuit of common ground must be the highest priority.

Other differences that separate us, especially with race, must also be overcome to heal our nation and bring us all closer together.

One example of where we can better unify is with regards to divisions based on race. Tensions are strong right now. I stand shoulder to shoulder with our men and women in blue, but quite frankly, we all should, without exception. This will require not only better communication

and leadership, but also accountability as necessary on all sides of this issue. Every day, men and women first responders kiss their loved ones goodbye as they leave their homes to protect their local community and put their lives on the line to keep us safe. We must get back to the point where tensions from misdeeds don’t overshadow and overwhelm the passionate, loyal desire to always be expressing appreciation and gratitude.

We can better unify with regards to divisions formed by political ideology. Differences are acceptable. Debate is healthy.

A vigorous pursuit of common ground wherever possible, though, must be the norm. My first term in Congress gave me a deeper appreciation of just how

diverse our country is from some of the bluest, most liberal-leaning districts in America, to some of the reddest, most conservativeleaning districts in the United States. Different geographic locations prioritize different substantive issues over others, and that diversity should be embraced and respected.

Whether serving in the Army, State Senate or Congress, I have always been willing to work with absolutely anyone to better our community, state and nation.

There are so many challenges ahead, and in order to pursue a better course for America, we must all move forward united.

Thank you for preserving over 300 street trees Last week residents in the M-section of Stony Brook were delighted to receive a letter from Town of Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro (R) concerning the proposed street repaving plan. This letter explained that the Town has decided to repair the existing curbing in place and leave our valuable, mature street trees in their current locations.

I want to thank Superintendent Losquadro for taking the time to re-evaluate the paving project and to find a reasonable alternative that meets the goal for safe and well-paved streets, while preserv-

ing our environment and community character. I want to thank the Highway Department staff for their help and professionalism during this process. My neighbors and I look forward to enjoying newly paved streets in the spring.

Many others at the Town of Brookhaven have also been a great help. Supervisor Romaine (R), Town Attorney Annette Eaderesto, Councilwoman Cartright, Town Board members and Open Space Program Coordinator John Turner all deserve the thanks and appreciation of the Stony Brook community.

ful that so many members of the Stony Brook community were able to come together toward the simple yet important goal of preserving our beautiful street trees. Help, persistence, and support were provided by young families new to the area, “original owners” of M-section homes, college students, environmental organizations, civic associations, local politicians, members of the press and many other generous individuals. he other day, my teenage son had a choice. No, he can’t vote and no, he wasn’t ordering a sandwich at a diner with an 18-page menu. He was with some friends who decided they wanted to get a better view of the street and, presumably, their peers who were walking below during a warm fall day.

They headed for the roof of a building, where a Private Property No Trespassing sign awaited them. They ignored the sign.

That can come from a dedicated teacher, who takes time out from a demanding schedule to teach a broader life lesson about the difficulty of making the “right” choice. It can come from a coach, a principal, a neighbor, a parent, a grandparent or

Snatches of thoughts run through the mind, and they present themselves in no particular order. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by a thin margin. She and all those who believe were, on the one hand, affirmed. So we might conclude that she was defeated by the rules of the game. Now this is another reversal of what was predicted. There was talk that if Trump won the popular vote but lost the presidency, that his followers would take to the streets and there would be a revolution or at least some violence. Instead Trump lost the popular vote, said he “loves this country,” and Hillary is left as the popular choice but the Electoral College’s loser. So be it. That’s the way the rules are set and both parties played by them. What’s the point?

The point is that vote represents the decision of the American people.

Is Hillary going to advocate revolution? It is a bit early, but I sincerely

anyone who goes out of his or her way to make sure that our children don’t lose theirs.

I understand that this moment isn’t the biggest challenge my son will face.

Undoubtedly, someone will come up with an idea, a suggestion or a dare he feels pressure to do.

These small moments, however, lead to the bigger ones. It is the slippery slope argument. If doing something that might be a little wrong doesn’t cause problems or have any consequence, maybe doing something larger that might not be exactly right is also just fine because no one noticed or he didn’t get caught. Or, the argument that frustrates me the most, someone else did something worse, so this isn’t such a poor decision.

We all have those difficult moments, when someone whose company we enjoy encourages us to do something that might not be in our best short- or long-term interests and when, for whatever reason, that friend insists we participate to demonstrate

our friendship. This is the moment when peer pressure threatens to silence the little voice in our heads that says, “This is probably a bad idea.”

We hear so many times about people who either don’t have that little voice or who have so effectively silenced it that the rules of our country don’t apply. They live with a freedom that they find exhilarating, until they get caught.

We are painfully aware of the destruction people who tumbled down that slippery slope create for themselves and society, through difficult and self-destructive habits.

There are so many other children who, thanks to the effort of the village of supporters around them who point to a true north, develop both selfcontrol and self-confidence that allow them to say, “I’m not going to do that.”

Through any age, one of the hardest words for us to say, when those around us encourage us to join them in treading on someone else’s property or rights, is “No!”

doubt it. I also truly doubted it had the outcome of the race been reversed. That’s the marvel of our democratic system. The winner wins, while the loser and the loser’s followers accept the results and fall into line behind the winner — with congratulations and prayers, if not a happy heart. There is a peaceful transition of power. That’s the other cardinal rule of our system.

Did Hillary lose because men hate to see women in positions of power? Certainly there are men who swore they would never vote for a woman leader. But that is a regressive and silly oath, as history in the past 100 years has already shown. There have been and will be strong women leaders around the world, and they have been and will be encouraged by the majority of men and women around them. Just look at how many men have been the champions of women, starting with President Barack Obama. Talent, intelligence and leadership are not gender specific.

So what, then, is the message from this election 2016? There are probably many messages. Some people,

who voted for what they saw as change, are angry that they have lost their good jobs in industries that are fading in importance with little or no recourse to another. Some resent what they view as unseemly differences in pay between those at the top and those at the bottom of the pay scale. Some are upset that the cost of “Obamacare” health coverage will be rising significantly in the next year.

Then there are all sorts of ‘isms” that still plague us: racism, sexism, agism, bigotries of all kinds. For sure, those angry people are most upset because they perceive that the leaders of our society do not hear them. Trump promised to hear them and to help them — all of them. We wish him strength, even as we know government cannot fix everything. This was a vote for change, even if only from Democratic to Republican leadership.

It’s the morning after and here we are, willingly or not, back together behind one president. May God bless America, the politicians beg. But God, the bible tells us, helps those who help themselves. May we work together to make our lives, and thus our nation, a still better place to live.
