A pitch to put Stony Brook on Chinese itineraries

By Donna newman donna@tbrnewspapers.com Stony Brook was on display as a destination on a global scale this past weekend.

A group of travel product developers — those who design tours for the luxury market in mainland China — visited the Village Oct. 22 as part of a “familiarization (or fam) tour” of Long Island.

“We don’t have time to showcase the entire island, so we choose some places that are special,” Joan LaRosa, director of sales for the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau said of the visit. Evidently Stony Brook is one of those.

The tours encourage designers to add Long Island stops to their itineraries. She said five “fam” tours are going on right now, hosted by United Airlines, which provided the plane tickets.

A second entity participating in this travel sales pitch is the New York State Division of Tourism via its I Love NY campaign.

Anna Klapper, a manager for global trade development for Washington, D.C.based Brand USA, is one of the guides accompanying the group on their journey.

“They flew into New York Oct. 19 and have been visiting places on Long Island,” she said. “Tomorrow morning we’ll ferry to Connecticut and make stops in New Haven, Mystic [Seaport] and Mohegan Sun.” Klapper pointed out that she and colleague Philip Joseph have noticed that their guests are constantly online posting

Brand USA is an organization that markets the United States as a destination to travel product developers worldwide. Its goal is to increase international tourist visits, thereby fueling the nation’s economy and enhancing its image abroad, as stated on the organization’s website.

The website further states it is “the nation’s first public-private partnership to spearhead a globally coordinated marketing effort to promote the United States as a premier travel destination and communicate U.S. entry policies. Its operations are supported by a combination of contribu-

tions from destinations, travel brands, and private-sector organizations, plus matching funds collected by the U.S. government from international visitors who visit the United States under the Visa Waiver Program.”

The visitors from China are also accompanied by Tina Yao, Brand USA’s Shanghai office director.

Gloria Rocchio, president of the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, made the arrangements for the visitors and was on hand to greet them.

“The LI Convention and Visitors Bureau picked Stony Brook for this visit,” she said.

When asked if she knew why, she speculated, “perhaps because we have a 21st

century, world-class university and a picturesque, historic village on the water?”

Rocchio invited Yu-wan Wang, associate dean of international admissions at Stony Brook University, to meet the group, talk about the university and answer any questions they had about it. She also served as an interpreter, and when she asked William Wang of Shanghai to tell what he liked best about Stony Brook, she translated: “I love the fresh air and to be so close to the ocean.”

Following a sampling of lavender and espresso cheese and craft beers, the party of 16 made their way across the street to The Jazz Loft for a musical evening.

Classical music in a beautiful setting — Saturdays at Six

Joni Mitchell once said, “I see music as fluid architecture.” The All Souls Episcopal Church in Stony Brook Village gives people an opportunity to revel in both at once.

The Saturdays at Six program offers classical music in concert the third Saturday of each month at 6 p.m.

On a recent Saturday the musicians were members of the Three Village Chamber Players, a group of Stony Brook graduate students who have been performing there over the past year.

“Our mission is to enrich our community through artistic excellence, providing musical performances of the highest caliber free to the public,” reads the statement on the group’s Facebook page.

For its part, the church shares the Players’ mission of serving the community.

“The church’s doors are open every day so people can enter for prayer or reflection,” said Welcoming Chairman Daniel Kerr, while introducing the concert.

Further, the church displays an active commitment to the arts with its Saturday programs that offer music, meditation and poetry on a regular basis, he said.

This program included Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19 in C major — nicknamed “Dissonance” — and, after an intermission, Ravel’s String Quartet in F major. Perform-

ers included the group’s director Natalie Kress, Anna Tsukervanik, Philip Carter (violins) and Alison Rowe (cello).

As an added treat, one of Kress’ violin students, five-year-old Leah Caravello, played a short piece.

The next Saturdays at Six concert will take place Nov. 19, when the members of the Anima Brass Quintet will perform.

Although the concert is free and open to all, a nonperishable food item donation is requested, and a “performer’s appreciation donation basket” is available, should people wish to contribute.

A Port Jefferson man was one of two arrested in Setauket and charged with forging credit cards.

Chidubem Adi, 19, of Port Jefferson was in the passenger seat of a car with Olisa Uzoegwu, 20, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, at about 3 a.m. traveling on Old Town Road in Setauket when the pair went through a red light at the intersection of Sheep Pasture Road Oct. 21, according to Suffolk County Police.

Police pulled the car over and during the

stop discovered marijuana on a back seat, four forged credit cards and a credit card encoder. The license plate on the vehicle was also determined to be fake.

The Identification Theft Unit and 6th Squad detectives investigated and ultimately charged Adi with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, unauthorized possession of marijuana and false personation. Uzoegwu was charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument, criminal possession of a forgery device, false personation and driving without a license.

Attorney information for Adi was not immediately available.

The Suffolk County Police were first called to Carvel on Route 25A in East Setauket at 9:46 p.m., Oct. 18. According to the police report, a man entered the store, pointed a handgun and demanded cash.

The cashier gave the cash and the man left.

The police investigation is continuing.

A Carvel employee working at the store on Tuesday, who preferred to remain anonymous, said both Carvel and Dunkin’ Donuts stores are being targeted and that another location had been robbed the previous night.

Police confirmed that a Carvel store located on Middle Country Road in Selden was robbed at 5:54 p.m., Oct. 24.

According to the police report a man entered, pointed a handgun at the clerk, and the clerk handed him cash. Police said the suspect was wearing a hooded jacket and fled on foot, southbound on Blue Point Road.

The owner of the store could not be reached for comment.

In an email, Melissa Smith, PR and communications manager at Focus Brands, the parent company of Carvel, said, “We are aware of the two robberies that took place in franchised Carvel locations [on Long Island] and have been in contact with the owners

of these franchised locations. Our franchise owners are fully cooperating with authorities in the investigation.”

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the 6th Squad at 631-854-8600 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220TIPS (8477). All calls will be kept confidential, and there is a $5,000 reward for useful tips.

It was a first time event, White said, adding that they wanted to do something

different for the folks in the area — kind of a fellowship/fundraiser combination.

Multiple generations were involved. White pointed out the cupcakes her granddaughters had baked as part of the refreshments to be offered.

Barbara and Tom Lyon came from Mount Sinai to support the event because of their long friendship with the church’s pastor, Reverend Gregory Leonard.

Lyon and Leonard are among the founders of a one-year-old organization called Building Bridges in Brookhaven, which gets its name from a line in a sermon delivered by Leonard about “building bridges rather than walls.”

High honors for student musicians In recognition of their outstanding musical talents, 14 Ward Melville High School students have been selected to perform in this year’s New York State School Music Association All-State Music Conference, and 40 have been chosen to perform in the New York State Council of Administrators for Music Education All-County Music Festival.

Selection into these festivals is based on the students’ NYSSMA scores from the previous spring as well as teacher recommendations.

The All-County Festival will end in a musical showcase on Nov. 18 at Northport High School. The All-State concerts will take place in Rochester Dec. 3 and 4.

Murphy students study aquatic life R.C. Murphy Junior High School Earth SMART classes learned firsthand about the aquatic inhabitants living in a local waterway during a recent field trip.

During the trip, the 60 students boarded the Celtic Quest charter boat out of Port

Jefferson. During the day, they enjoyed a brief fishing experience before dredging the harbor to study the benthic organisms.

At the conclusion of the trip, the students tallied all the fish caught and completed a lab based on data gathered during the trip.

Gelinas Junior High School students perform “Addict.”

Gelinas students tackle teen issues With a true black box theater feeling, P.J. Gelinas Junior High School students transformed the school’s auditorium into a stage for open conversations as they performed this year’s annual adolescent issue play “Addict.”

The production was an emotionally charged play that depicted the lives of a group of teenagers dealing with alcohol and

substance abuse.

It told the tale from each lead character’s perspective and brought the audience on a roller coaster ride as the actors faced their vices.

The show was performed by a small cast of ninth-grade students, working under the direction of Gelinas teacher Robert DePersio.

history close at hand A look at local Long Island farming in more recent times by beverly C. Tyler This is part four of the series. In 1968, the last major crop of Long Island potatoes grown in the Three Village area was harvested on the McGunnigle farm in South Stony Brook.

In 1985, the Borella farm on Old Town Road in Setauket, the last major farm in the Three Village area, was sold for development.

The Suffolk County Farmland Preservation Program has provided one of the bright spots in the battle to maintain farmland on Long Island. In 2002, the remaining 60 acres of the Thompson/Rowland/Detmer farm was placed under the Farmland Preservation Program. It will remain as farmland forever.

In 1950, in Suffolk County there were 123,346 acres of land in farms. Of this, only 3,318 were planted with corn. By 2000 there were only 34,600 acres still in farmland and only 1,300 acres planted with corn, a total of less than 4 percent of the available farmland.

Thanks to the Farmland Preservation Program, the number of acres in farms has remained fairly steady or decreased only slightly. In 2002, there were 651 farms in Suffolk County. However, 71 percent of the farm sales were from nursery and greenhouses, 12 percent vegetables, 7 percent poultry and eggs, 5 percent fruits and nuts and 4 percent aquaculture. All other products, including corn and hay, accounted for just 1 percent in farm sales.

People on Long Island, like the vast majority of regions in the United States, consume very little that is grown locally. I enjoy having breakfast at various local cafes, diners, restaurants and “hole-in-the-wall” places all over Long Island. Over the past two years I have asked them where they get their perishable food. The most common response is that it is delivered by truck from locations in upstate New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

When we lose our farms we will also lose our local farm stands, and with it our delicious and fresh-picked local corn, our sweet and tender Long Island strawberries, our melt-in-your-mouth Long Island peaches, our juicy and tasty Long Island tomatoes, as well as so many, many farm-to-table fresh Long Island vegetables. What we will be left with are the tasteless, hard, perfectly shaped and colored fruits and vegetables that can be readily shipped across the country.

We need to start, as individuals, insisting that we be able to buy and be served locally grown produce. We need to support our local farm stands. We need to insist that our supermarkets buy locally grown produce. We need to stand up and be counted, not only for good taste, good health and to preserve our local farm economy but to encourage the lowering of our carbon footprint. It takes fuel to transport crops regionally and across the country, fuel that could be put to better use, fuel that could be conserved, fuel that could

When the Erie Canal was opened in 1825, it immediately lowered the cost of transporting grain from Ohio and eventually from the Midwest grain belt to New York City and eastward to Europe.

Soon after, the railroads took over the efficient transportation of products manufactured all over America to markets in every state. When roads and vehicles improved, trucks took over the transportation of pro-

duce, at a time when fuel costs were low. As a result, regions began to grow more specific crops rather than general crops to feed themselves.

In Iowa today, more than 90 percent of the food consumed in the state is imported.

Councilwoman wants to grow NYS crop of organ donors by rebeCCA Anzel Registered organ donors are hard to come by in New York state compared to the rest of the United States, and for one elected official in Brookhaven, that’s not going to cut it.

Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point) did not hesitate when her friend Tom D’Antonio said he needed a kidney. She decided right then, at the Huntington Lighthouse Music Festival in Huntington Harbor in September 2015, that she would share her spare.

She underwent comprehensive medical testing to determine if she would be a viable donor — a blood test, chest X-ray, electrocardiogram, CT scan, MRI, psychological evaluation and cancer screening, to name a few.

“It’s the ultimate physical you’re ever going to have, and by the blood test alone several people were disqualified,” Bonner said.

The surgery was April 26, a Tuesday, at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Bonnor was home that Friday and missed only eight days of work.

“Jane didn’t just save my life, she saved my family’s life,” D’Antonio said. “Donating an organ doesn’t just affect the person getting the

organ — although certainly it affects them the most — it affects everyone’s life.”

Bonner said she takes every opportunity to share her story to bring awareness about the importance of being an organ donor.

“I want to be a living example to show that it can be done because it’s life changing for the recipient and only a little inconvenient for the donor,” she said.

There is a large need for organs in New York. More than 9,700 peo-

ple are on the organ waiting list, and someone dies every 18 hours waiting, according to LiveOnNY, a federally designated organ procurement organization.

New York ranks last among the 50 states in percent of residents registered as organ donors, despite surveys showing 92 percent of New Yorkers support organ donation.

Only 27 percent of New Yorkers are enrolled in the state registry, versus the average of 50 percent registered across the rest of the country.

Stony Brook Medicine and Stony Brook University hosted an Organ Donor Enrollment Day Oct. 6, including Bonner, in a statewide effort to boost the number of registered donors.

“Our residents need to be reminded about the importance of organ donation,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) said in a statement.

Dawn Francisquini, transplant senior specialist for the hospital, said volunteers enrolled 571 people.

“New York has a very large population, so it’s going to take a lot to get us up to where the other states are,” she said. “But we’re making progress.”

There are two ways to become an organ donor. One is to be a living donor, like Bonner. A potential

— Dawn Francisquini donor does not have to know someone in need of an organ to donate a kidney, lobe of liver, lung or part of a lung, part of the pancreas or part of an intestine.

“Living donation is so important because not only are you giving an organ to someone, saved that life, but you’ve also made room on the list,” Francisquini said. “So you’ve saved two lives by donating one organ.”

The most common way is by registering when filling out a driver’s license registration or renewal form to be considered as a candidate upon death. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, though, only about three in 1,000 deceased people are suitable for organ donations.

Doctors determine whether organs like kidneys, livers, bones, skin and intestines are medically viable for a waiting recipient and they typically go to patients in the same state as the donor.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed legislation Aug. 18 allowing 16- and

17-year-olds to register as organ donors. If they die before turning 18, parents or guardians are able to reverse the decision.

“By authorizing 16- and 17-yearolds to make the selfless decision to become an organ donor, we take another significant step to grow the state’s Donate Life registry and create opportunities to save lives,” Cuomo said in a statement.

Francisquini said she thinks this new law will make a big difference.

Previously, because those under-18 were not allowed to express their wishes when filling out a driver’s license form, many would not register as donors until years later when renewing their license.

Since her surgery, Bonner has shared her story in speeches, panel discussions and on social media using the hashtag #ShareTheSpare.

“I really feel like this is much better than anything I could accomplish in my professional career,” she said. “I’ve been able to accomplish really amazing things, but this is a step above that.”

Patriots tennis team falls in county finals

By Bill landon The conditions at William Floyd High School were less than ideal as the No. 1 and No. 2 girls’ tennis teams battled through wind and cold during the Section XI championship Oct. 25. Ward Melville had a more difficult time overcoming the conditions, and fell to the top-seeded team that avenged a finale loss last season, 6-1.

The Patriots lost to the Cougars 4-3 on Sept.

15 — the team’s only loss during the regular season, which was a nonleague match. Ward Melville head coach Erick Sussin said the difference this time around was that Commack was at full strength.

“The first time we met them, they didn’t have their No. 1 singles player, so they beat us 4-3 and that wasn’t even their best team,” Sussin said. “We knew that today would be a lot harder. We had to win four out of seven points, so I knew we had to win second and third doubles, and most likely third and fourth singles.”

Commack’s first and second singles are the rock of the Cougars’ lineup.

agreed with her teammates that the conditions made it harder for her to perform up to her expectations.

“The wind and how cold it was it made it hard to get through,” she said. “I think I did the best I could. I was pleased with my serve and my forehand, because normally that lets me down, but I think I brought that today.”

Ward Melville sophomore Denise Lai fell 6-3, 6-1 in first singles to seal the victory for Commack (15-1).

“She’s an unbelievable talent,” Sussin said of the sophomore despite her loss. “She has an excellent tennis IQ, all-around game and powerful topspin shots as well as perfect slices. She can crush the ball from the baseline or win on a soft drop shot with ease. Lai knows how to exploit her opponent’s weaknesses and is our quiet leader that all the girls look up to.”

Junior Keren Collins was the only player to win for Ward Melville. She topped her Commack opponent 6-3, 6-2 in fourth singles.

Ward Melville finished the season 16-2 overall, and went undefeated in League V.

“I was pleased with everybody’s performance today,” Sussin said. “When you reach this level, everyone’s playing well and conditions were unfavorable for everybody. Commack played some good tennis. They are by far the best team in the county and when you play like they did today, they deserved it.”

“She has extremely consistent groundstrokes,” Sussin said of Eggleston. “She has a gritty determination to win on the court.”

Despite her loss, Shulder, a co-captain and All-League player who Sussin said has consistent, powerful groundstrokes, left it all on the court.

“I played to the best of my ability,” she said. “Even though I lost today — and I won against them last time — I was playing a girl of a higher spot. The wind definitely affects your play, because you try to get the ball to do one thing, and it does another.”

Sussin said he was pleased with his team’s performance and added he was proud of the level they achieved, despite the conditions being less than ideal.

“All the girls had to hit through the wind, the serves were tough and lobs were a little hard to deal with,” he said. “The doubles strategy was to try to win the points at the net and not worry about ground strokes, to end the point early because the wind’s going to take it.”

In first doubles, Ward Melville senior Morgan Voulo and sophomore Anna Ma, who the coach said has a tremendous forehand and killer overhands, lost to Commack’s Emma Matz, the younger cousin of New York Mets pitcher Steven Matz, and Julia Kinalis, 6-2, 6-2.

Ward Melville junior Julia Hu and sophomore Dara Berman lost 6-4, 6-1 over Commack’s Emma Mangels and Andrianna Kaimis in second doubles, and Ward Melville seniors Shannon Sartain and Julia Hoffmann fell 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 at third doubles to Commack’s Christine Kong and Victoria Pensiero.

“It was the best that I’ve played, and it was hard once I knew that the team had lost,” Sartain said. “But I kept playing and I played hard all the way through.”

Sartain, an All-Division player, is the leader and heart and soul of the Patriots’ team, according to her head coach.

Smearing Throne-Holst with false statements

Giving the gift of life Recently, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed legislation that will allow 16 and 17-year-olds to register as organ donors. Nearly 10,000 names currently reside on the state’s waiting list, hoping to get the good news that a life-saving organ has become available.

Unfortunately, many may have to wait longer than they’d like, or can, because New York is last among the 50 states in percentage terms of residents registered as organ donors. Our editorial staff is in favor of the new legislation, though scenarios where a 16-yearold will be a suitable candidate for donation could be few and far between. Expanding the pool of potential donors makes sense, but will this be enough?

Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point) donated a kidney to a friend in need earlier this year, and we hope she inspires others to #ShareTheSpare.

Bonner has said on several occasions how fulfilling the experience has been for her, on top of the obvious benefit of helping someone else.

A member of our editorial staff came across a video this week of remarks made by Rabbi Maurice Salth at Central Synagogue in New York City Oct. 12, in which he told a story of a 23-year-old man who was killed in a car crash. The crash left the man brain dead, and his family decided it was best to allow his organs to be donated. His heart, both lungs, liver and each kidney were given to people on the waiting list. Five lives were saved by those organs, though five others were potentially saved if you consider that five new names moved to the top of the waiting lists.

The need for registered organ donors upon death in New York is obvious, though as Bonner has said, participation from more living donors would make a difference for so many people. You don’t have to know someone desperate for a new organ to step up and save a life.

Mr. James Saccardi (Letters, Oct. 20) endorsing Lee Zeldin for re-election, smears Anna Throne-Holst with knowingly false statements on gun control and violence in the U.S. Western Europe, Canada and Australia have strict, nationwide, gun purchase and registration laws, with the U.K. the strictest. The U.S. leads these nations in gun homicides by ten to one (3.4 per 100,000 inhabitants to about 0.30; the U.K., 0.06), and gun possession by three to one.

As Mr. Saccardi well knows, strict statewide gun control laws are hamstrung by the NRA’s tooth-and-nail campaign against any restrictions, including background checks at gun shows and internet sales. Two thirds of New York and New Jersey’s recovered illegal guns can be traced to the south — Virginia, Georgia, Florida; Chicago

imports from Indiana; California from Arizona, Texas and Nevada.

(See “How Gun Traffickers Get Around State Gun Laws,” Gregor Aisch and Josh Keller, The New York Times, Nov. 13, 2015). Even so, the ex-Confederate states outkill the Northeast by about two to one.

Anna Throne-Holst is for sensible gun control that will not deprive any law-abiding citizen of the right to own a reasonable weapon. Lee Zeldin and the NRA push an extreme interpretation of the Second Amendment that was not accepted until the Roberts-Scalia 5-4 Supreme Court decision of 2008, which expressly repealed a 1939 ruling that had upheld 200 years of jurisprudence, by holding that “militia” was irrelevant.

Zeldin, et al, like to quote half of the second amendment, “ … the right of the people to keep

and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” But, although they claim to be “originalists,” they never mention the first half of the only amendment that has a leading qualifying clause: “A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State ...” At the time, the U.S. had an army of 800 men and relied heavily on state militias; George Washington advocated that militiamen be trained to a national standard, and suggested Congress finance a navy. There was no doubt that “security” referred to foreign enemies; it is an NRA myth that the amendment was meant to assure an armed defense against the U.S. government itself, but this myth lets assault rifles circulate into the hands of psychopaths.

An ominous path towards neo-fascism Historian Robert Paxton, author of “The Anatomy of Fascism,” defined that ideology as “a mass nationalist movement intended to restore a country that’s been [allegedly] damaged and in decline, by expansion, by violent attacks on enemies, internal as well as external … the replacement of democracy by an authoritarian dictatorship … while making no secret of having no [substantive] program.”

It is irrefutable that Donald Trump’s campaign and rhetoric threatens the emergence of a dangerous brand of neo-fascism.

In embracing the racist Birther movement, Trump sought to convince his followers that America has become a nightmarish dystopia caused by an increasingly multiracial, multicultural society. Trump has vilified enormous swaths of American society: immigrants, Latinos, Muslims, blacks, AsianAmericans, gays, the disabled, and women; blaming them for his assessment of the United States as “a hellhole … going down fast.” More recently, he has blown the veiled anti-Semitic dog whistle by pointing to a conspiracy of banks, the media,

corporations, and global-special interests seeking the destruction of the nation.

Moreover, Trump is frighteningly dismissive of our core democratic institutions,; a practice met with enthusiasm by his followers. Trump pledges, when elected, to incarcerate his opponent, and his followers chant, “Lock her up.” He attacks the “crooked media” fueling crowd anger necessitating police escorts for members of the media. Trump calls our election system “rigged” and warns of a stolen election, and his supporters pledge to monitor minority polling precincts, patrol and threaten “revolution” if their candidate loses. Douglas Brinkley, a Rice University historian, bemoaned “this threat of delegitimizing the federal government [by] Trump saying our entire government is corrupt and the whole system is rigged.”

Notwithstanding Trump’s animosity towards policy details (“I am a person who does not necessarily believe in plans … I don’t think the voters care about specifics”), his simplistic policies have confirmed his expressed admiration for autocrat Vladimir

Putin (“He is doing a great job. … He is very much a leader. …

I think I’d get along very well with Vladimir Putin.” Indeed, both embrace war crimes (torture, killing of families of suspected terrorists, and indiscriminate carpet bombing) as well as mass roundups, forced deportations, and walling-off the country; and both seek to exploit fear, fuel unbridled rage and create a cult of personality.

On the night he accepted the GOP nomination, Trump told America that it was beset by “poverty and violence at home” and “war and destruction abroad.” And, rather than asking the American people to put their trust in one another or God, he presented himself as the sole hope for redemption by stating “I am your voice … I alone can fix it. I will restore law and order.” Perhaps Trump should have read Ronald Reagan’s 1980 acceptance speech: ‘My view of government places trust not in one person … but in those values that transcend persons and parties.”

he current World Series baseball matchup features two teams that haven’t won a championship in decades. The Cleveland Indians’ last title came in 1948, while the Chicago Cubs, in case anyone hasn’t heard, previously claimed baseball’s top prize in 1908.

Let’s take a look at the way things were the last time each of these teams won the World Series.

In 1948, the Indians’ Leroy “Satchel” Paige made his debut on July 9, becoming the first African-American pitcher in the American League.

considerably lower, before inflation kicked in. The price for a grandstand ticket at Braves Field, Boston, for the clinching sixth game when the Indians beat the local Braves, 4-2, was $6. The Braves moved later to Milwaukee and then Atlanta.

The cost of a gallon of gas to drive to Braves Field, which is now Nickerson Field on the campus of Boston University, was about 16 cents.

Also in the world of sports, the Olympics returned to the world stage after the 1940 and 1944 games were canceled during World War II. Remarkably, London — the target of repeated bombings during the war, which had ended only three years earlier — hosted the 1948 Olympics.

In other international events, Israel was created, with David Ben-Gurion serving as the first prime minister. In Berlin, after the Soviet Union blocked all ground traffic into West Berlin, the airlift started on June 26, 1948, and didn’t end until Sept. 30, 1949, providing enough supplies to enable West Berlin to remain under the control

of the British, French and American governments.

Back on the home front, President Harry Truman dedicated New York International Airport, commonly known as Idlewild Airport and, now, JFK. He hailed the new airport as “the front door” of the United Nations, which was under construction in Manhattan and would be completed in 1952.

Truman, who had become president after FDR died, ran for election against Republican Thomas Dewey.

The day after the election, the Chicago Daily Tribune ran a banner headline that read, “Dewey defeats Truman.”

A beaming Truman held up the paper after he won the election.

Back in 1908, the last year the Cubs won the World Series, the Olympics were held in London for the first time.

The games were originally scheduled for Rome, but a Mount Vesuvius eruption in 1906 made a new venue necessary.

A dazzling introduction to electronic music

T

his past weekend, I spent some delightful time with my grandson and was introduced to electronic music. He plays and composes this type of music, so I wanted to know more about it, and I was dazzled.

In a corner of his bedroom, with relatively few, modestsized electronic instruments, he can construct and deconstruct and reconstruct sounds as they graphically appear on a screen in front of him.

I’ll try to explain how this was made possible. Advances in technology, from the development of tape recorders last century to the laptop computer of today played a part. According to some research I did on the Internet, the earliest electronic devices for performing music were developed at the end of the 19th century. Italian Futurists explored sounds not precisely considered musical. Then in the 1920s and ’30s, electronic instruments were introduced and used to play the first compositions.

The big breakthrough came with magnetic audiotape, sort of analogous to the development of film for movies. Audiotape enabled musicians to tape sounds and then modify them, by changing speed or splicing out mistakes and inserting better parts of takes. It was a boon to recording commercial music, be it classical or popular.

Germany was first on this scene, actually during World War II, and that work was brought to the United States at the end of the war. Musique

Computers were now available, and they could be made to compose music according to predetermined mathematical algorithms. In 1957, the RCA Mark II Sound Synthesizer became the first that could be programmed by its user, making possible the fusion of electronic and folk music, for example.

Its user now had the ability to pinpoint and control elements of sound precisely.

By the 1970s, the synthesizer helped make electronic music a significant influence on popular music.

Electronic drums and drum machines entered disco and new wave music.

Toward the end of the last century, the Musical Instrument Digital Interface or MIDI enabled everything from experimental art music to popular electronic dance music. Pop electronic music became connected to mainstream culture.

Synthesized music can be created entirely from electronically produced signals. My grandson is, in fact, marching along the same path as Paul Hindemith and the Beatles. Only today he has more technology to help him than they did.

Will all this eventually replace large orchestras? He says, “Yes.”
