Town collecting donations ahead of Thanksgiving The Brookhaven Youth Bureau INTERFACE program’s annual Thanksgiving food drive is back, running through Nov. 15, giving assistance to the town’s less fortunate residents during the holiday season.

“There are many families that struggle every day to put food on the table,” Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) said. “Our Thanksgiving food drive not only helps those families, but it also reminds us about the true meaning of the holiday season. I ask everyone to give thanks for what they have and please open your hearts to those in need.”

Last year’s drive provided Thanksgiving meals to more than 820 families townwide.

Drop off points this year include: •Brookhaven Town Hall: 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville.

•Henrietta Acampora Recreation Center: 39 Montauk Highway in Blue Point.

•Brookhaven Town Highway Department: 1140 Old Town Road in Coram.

•Rose Caracappa Senior Center: 739 Route 25A in Mount Sinai.

Suggested food items are all nonperishables, including canned soups, canned cranberry sauce, turkey gravy, stuffing mix, instant potatoes, canned sweet or white potatoes, rice, canned vegetables, jarred sauce, macaroni, canned fruit, pudding, Jello, cookie mix, cake mix, icing and juice.

Due to refrigeration requirements, the town cannot accept frozen turkeys, but residents can instead donate $10 gift cards from local supermarkets to help assist families in purchasing turkeys.

Hours of operation for the food drive are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, contact Josie Lunde at the Youth Bureau at 631-451-8011.

“The model of what he did with his own personal resources to enhance our community is a heroic profile,” Englebright said. “He did it quietly without fanfare but in my mind he is a civic hero of the first order. He lived what he preached and was absolutely genuine.”

Three Village Historical Society historian Beverly C. Tyler and de Zafra met in 1974 when the Three Village Bicentennial Committee formed. Tyler said de Zafra was responsible for the greening of 25A by having 222 trees planted along the road from the Stony Brook train station to East Setauket, and he was instrumental in convincing local shopping centers to use unified signs.

In The Village Times Dec. 30, 1976, de Zafra was named Man of the Year for his greening efforts. The professor said during his commute to SBU he became frustrated with what he felt was the destruction of Route 25A. While he was part of the civic association, the organization had other priorities at the time, so he saw the forming of the bicentennial committee as an opportunity to beautify the road. Through letter writing and fundraising, de Zafra raised more than $13,000 for the planting.

“You only get a chance to do something like this once every 100 years,” he said during the 1976 interview. “I’m glad I grabbed hold of mine when it came my way.”

The success of the project and many others of de Zafra’s didn’t surprise Tyler.

“Bob was very well organized and relentless,” Tyler said. “He just took on a project

Born Feb. 15, 1932, and raised in Westchester County and New Milford, Connecticut, he was the son of Carlos Sr. and Ellen (Knox) de Zafra.

Bob de Zafra, who earned his B.S. from Princeton and his doctoral degree from the University of Maryland, was a research scientist in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University where he worked on a number of important projects including detection of trace gases in the atmosphere, and ground-based observations and measurements of the South Pole ozone layer.

His colleagues at the university noted that his contributions were so vital and revealing that a mountainous feature in Antarctica was named DeZafra Ridge in 2002, and a German punk rock band — DeZafra Ridge of Leipzig, Germany — has adopted the name. The professor emeritus retired in 1999 after 38 years in the physics department.

He was “intensely civic minded” as expressed by his SBU colleagues as well as his friends and co-workers in the Three Village Bicentennial Committee, Three Village Civic Association, Affiliated Brookhaven Civic Organizations, Three Village Historical Society and Three Village Community Trust. He was a past president of both the historical society and the civic association, and was one of the founding members of the community trust. De Zafra was noted for being relentless in his insistence of common sense and reasoned logic in discussions of environmental issues such as the successful preservation of the Forsythe Meadow nature preserve in Stony Brook. He put his heart and soul into these efforts.

His work with the community trust, as a founder and trustee, exemplified his vision of carefully planned future growth underpinned by protected open spaces and historic preservation.

He could strike fear in those with dubious development schemes, but was just as likely to support smart growth initiatives. De Zafra also gave this community his best thinking and didn’t shy away from the heavy lifting. He and his wife Julia have been fixtures in the Three Village cultural mainstream, supporters of diverse charitable causes and caring friends.

He enjoyed reading, gardening and historic restoration including his own houses.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Julia; brother-in-law Christopher Phillips; nieces Carolyn Wingard, Dorothea de Zafra Atwell, Glenna de Zafra and Elizabeth de Zafra; nephew Raymond de Zafra; great-niece Cindy Wingard; great-nephews Aaron Anthony de Zafra and Charles Roderick de Zafra.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home in East Setauket.

A 48-year-old woman from Port Jefferson Station entered a home in an apartment complex on Piedmont Drive in Port Jefferson Station at about 1:30 p.m. Oct. 10 without permission from the owner, then threatened to hit the occupant of the home with a baseball bat raised over her head, according to police. She was arrested and charged with second-degree menacing and second-degree criminal trespassing.

Checking in

At a home on Crystal Brook Hollow Road in Port Jefferson, a 38-year-old man, who lived in the home, entered the bedroom of a woman who lived at the home and stole her checkbook at about 4 p.m. Oct. 2, according to police. He was arrested Oct. 15 and charged with second-degree burglary.

On Third Avenue in Rocky Point Oct. 11, a 38-year-old man from Rocky Point was driving a 2001 Dodge when he was pulled over for a traffic stop, according to police.

During the stop it was discovered he was driving with a suspended license, police said. He was arrested and charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

A 34-year-old undomiciled man twice unlawfully entered Bridal Suite of Centereach retail store on Middle Country Road in Centereach Oct. 15 and rummaged through desks looking for money, according to police. He was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary.

Drunk hit-and-run

At about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 14, a 59-yearold man from Selden was driving a 2007 Toyota on Imperial Drive in Selden when he hit a parked, unoccupied 2015 Jeep, and fled the scene without stopping, according to police. His vehicle was identified by police and he was pulled over minutes later on Boyle Road in Selden, police said.

During the traffic stop police discovered he was driving the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, police said. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with property damage.

Robert Mandell, who was Ninia’s troop leader for the majority of the time he has been in Boy Scouts, said he remembers the teenager coming to him telling him how he earned badges for various activities such as glass blowing and concrete mixing. The former troop leader he said he would question him at length about what he did to earn the badge.

“I quizzed them like the FBI,” Mandell said.

He said he wasn’t surprised when Ninia earned every badge, saying he is a smart, hardworking teenager.

“This young man is driven,” the former troop leader said.

While the experiences earning the badges have provided great memories for Ninia, he said what he has enjoyed most during his Scouting years has been “providing leadership to a group of scouts and helping them with their own ability to rank up.”

Despite a busy schedule with school, the cross-country team and DECA, Ninia said it’s important to make time for Scouting.

New trial program pairs inmates with shelter dogs

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com In a new program at Yaphank Correctional Facility, Suffolk County inmates and homeless dogs are helping each other get a second chance.

Six men in orange jumpsuits lined up on the grounds of the jail Oct. 4, each with a shelter dog at his side, and took turns walking their four-legged companions around in a large circle, demonstrating the dog’s new socialization skills along the way. With a quick command, the dogs either sat, stayed or laid down. One of the dogs, named Bain, an 11-month-old rottweiler, even showed off how he can help someone get back on their feet — literally.

The demonstration was all part of a presentation of Handcuffs to Heeling, a pilot program that teaches low-risk, nonviolent offenders to train abandoned dogs — rottweilers, pit bulls and German shepherds plucked from the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter.

The aim of the program, which started in mid-September, is to socialize the dogs well enough so they can be put up for adoption.

But it’s also doing plenty of good for their trainers too. The inmates train the dogs three nights a week for two hours each session.

“We’re rehabilitating humans through animals,” said Michael Gould, the president and founder of Hounds Town Charities, who pitched the idea of the dog training program

to Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco in the spring. “When I see inmates, I see humans. When I see these big, powerful dogs, I see animals that shouldn’t be in a shelter.”

Gould, a former commanding officer of the Nassau County Police K-9 unit, admitted these breeds of dogs are difficult to adopt out because they carry reputations of being dangerous. But they are caring, loving and now well-trained, thanks to the inmates, Gould added.

“These are among the best dogs you can come across,” he said. With a quick snap of his fingers, the dog at Gould’s side stopped and sat at attention. “Everything is low key.

There’s no crazy energy. It’s all about structure and love. Firm hand. Kind heart.”

Suffolk County undersheriff Steven Kuehhas said he believes the program will reduce recidivism among the inmates, all of whom are serving a local sentence.

“This program gives the inmates the opportunity to learn responsibility,” Kuehhas said. He also added the program may help the inmates’ chances of employment, in an animal shelter or as a dog handler, after they leave. He called the program a winwin situation.

Jackie Bondanza, a Hounds Town representative and one of the program’s coordinators, said she’s noticed significant changes among the inmates and dogs since the program started.

“It’s been a very inspiring transformation,”

she said. “When the inmates first came, they were all composed and didn’t want to be here.

They’ve since really opened up and I think it’s helped build their confidence. Same with the dogs. These dogs would be sitting in cages in a shelter a majority of the day otherwise. This is incredible for them.”

The inmates turned dog trainers were chosen by the sheriff’s department under the criteria of being nonviolent offenders and being physically capable of handling their canine.

One of the inmates — Joseph Dima, 36, from Bohemia — said he was thinking of his own dog back home when he signed up for the program.

“To help these dogs find a home and owners that will handle them well — that was a big thing for me,” Dima said, referring to the pit bull he was assigned to, Carl, as a loving mush. “He’s such a great dog. People get the wrong misconceptions about pit bulls. He just wants affection. All the dogs do.”

When the dogs weren’t demonstrating their new skills, they were perched next to their trainers, being petted and rubbed. During the course of the program, the dogs live at Hounds Town Charities, which is housed in Ronkonkoma. Plans are in place to continue Handcuffs to Heeling after the expiration of the current six-week program as those behind it seek corporate sponsors and residents interested in adopting the dogs.

de zafra Continued from page A5 and was a bear about it. He just kept at it no matter what the problem was until he got a successful conclusion. He was very good at talking to people and getting them to see his point of view without overwhelming them.”

Herb Mones, a former president of the Three Village Civic Association, met de Zafra 25 years ago through the organization and praised his friend for working with builders and local elected officials to curb development and maintain the historical and architectural integrity of the area.

Mones said right up until de Zafra passed, he attended any event that was for the benefit of Three Village residents. Mones said his friend felt a responsibility to make the area a better place to live in.

“The thing that always impressed me is that Bob had a tremendous amount of energy and interest in preserving, protecting and enhancing the community in every way possible,” Mones said.

Current Three Village Civic Association President Jonathan Kornreich, who considers de Zafra a friend and mentor, echoed Mones’ sentiments.

“I can’t think of three people together who could fill his shoes, so great was the depth of his energy, passion and knowledge,” Kornreich said.

Local author John Broven also met de Zafra through the civic association and said the former president’s accomplishments were admirable as he fought random development rigorously, unknown to most residents.

“If Bob had been born in England, like his wife Julia, he would assuredly have been granted a knighthood for being such a dedicated community gatekeeper, let alone his incredible scientific achievements,” Broven said.

Cynthia Barnes, co-founder of the Three Village Community Trust with de Zafra, said he knew a great deal of municipality and zoning code laws and was a skillful researcher. His contributions were vitally important to the trust’s mission of preserving local properties, which included moving the Rubber Factory Houses to the trust’s

Bruce House headquarters.

“He was able to grasp the whole picture yet delve into the details to see where the trouble lay, and point to the areas of weakness to try to strengthen them,” Barnes said.

“He certainly brought us a long way toward [preserving],” Barnes said. “Because I think everything we saved, with the help of our elected officials as well, he was definitely a motivating force.”

Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station) said de Zafra worked with her and her team on various issues and initiatives over the last few years. Most recently he was part of the Citizens Advisory Committee for Route 25A. “Bob’s untimely passing is just before the acceptance of the 25A community visioning document later this month,” Cartright said.

“Bob cared so deeply for community land use issues and for this project, and we would like to find a way to honor and recognize Bob’s massive body of work and contributions during the process and in the future.”

The person On top of his accomplishments, those who knew him praised de Zafra as a modest man.

“He wouldn’t want to be called ‘doctor,’ he wanted to be called Bob,” Mones said.

“He never referenced his degree, his status within his field, his experiences that he had. He never used that as criteria in determining what he had to say or what he was doing. It was always based upon on the merits of the case.”

Englebright said de Zafra will be remembered by many as a man of action.

“He was the leading voice for protecting the essence of this place,” the assemblyman said. “It wasn’t just his voice, it was his action as well.”

County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket), who worked closely with de Zafra while she was president of the civic association, summed up how his family and friends were feeling the day of his funeral Oct. 17.

“The loss of Bob de Zafra leaves a hole in our collective heart,” she said. “He played a vital role in so many organizations as a watchdog for our community. Meticulous, passionate, diligent, generous, persistent and charming in his own way — he will be missed.”

In her current role with LLS, her goal is to raise $100,000 for Light the Night. She is hopeful that cures for cancer are close.

In addition to being chair of LLS, Gottesman is active with numerous organizations including the Long Island Center for Business & Professional Women, Women Presidents’ Organization and the New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce. She also has three children and four grandchildren.

He enjoyed music — Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Fats Waller, music of the ’40s and classical music. He had an extensive library of books and loved to cook, often asking others: “What are you having for dinner tonight?” He was an ad-

mirer of all the U.S. presidents, especially Abraham Lincoln; and Humphrey Bogart and Charles Lindbergh.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years Joanne; his children MaryAnne Simmons (Stephen) and Henry F. Elsesser (Claudine); grandchildren Christopher (Breanne), Bryan (Laura), Austin, Mark and Yuri; great-grandchildren Mason and twins Ira and Arthur; sisters-in-law Dayle Elsesser and Gloria Willets; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Oct. 11 at St. James Catholic Church in Setauket. The interment followed at the parish cemetery.

Lina Gottesman has been named the first woman corporate walk chair of the Long Island chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Light the Night to be held Oct. 21 at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Gottesman is the president of two Smithtown-based companies, RN Nurses Evolve and Altus Metal, Marble and Wood.

She is a 32-year Stony Brook resident along with her husband and Altus business partner, Bob. Gottesman has worked in health care for decades. First as a 14-year-old nurse’s aide and through the years as an RN serving as a critical care nurse, and now with her company that sources RNs and nurse practitioners.

“For years I’ve cared for patients with lifethreatening illnesses, gave them healing and support,” Gottesman, who has had many

Harry F. Elsesser Jr. of Stony Brook, NY died Oct. 7, at the age of 92.

Harry lived a long, full and celebrated life.

He loved people, and he loved his family, friends, students and pets. He was dedicated to lifelong learning, had many interests and traveled extensively.

Born in New York City, he was the beloved son of Henry and Emilie Korth Elsesser. He had an older sister, Elaine Meslin, and a younger brother, Charles Elsesser (both deceased). Harry grew

up in Massapequa and Manhasset. After graduation from Manhasset High School, he attended Colby College in Maine. He received his bachelor of business administration degree from Hofstra University in 1956 and his master’s degree from Adelphi University in 1985.

In 1953, Harry and Margaret Agnes McIntyre (Jerry) were married. They had two children, Henry and MaryAnne. Jerry died in 1975. While attending college and raising a young family, Harry pursued a 13-year career in advertising and merchandising.

In 1963, he changed career paths and, for the next 29 years, taught fourth- and fifthgrades at the Daniel Street Elementary School in Lindenhurst.

Harry was involved in many community organizations throughout his adult life including the Three Village and Lindenhurst historical societies, the Three Village Men’s Garden

Liucci twins lead Patriots to senior night shutout

By Desirée Keegan Desiree@tbrnewspapers.com Ward Melville’s soccer team has an advantage most teams don’t: the connection between twin sisters Kerri and Nicole Liucci.

On their senior night, in a 3-0 win over William Floyd Oct. 16, the two scored a goal apiece, and assisted on each other’s tallies to help the Patriots (10-3-2, 9-2-2 League I) power through.

“We have twin telepathy,” Kerri Liucci said. “We work hard together.”

Nicole Liucci was first to find the back of the net after her twin received a pass from the corner, and moved the ball front and center in the box. With a mid-air knock-in, the Liucci sisters made it an early 1-0 advantage.

“We have a really strong bond and we know where each other is at all times,” Nicole Liucci said. “I kept saying to myself, ‘I need to get the ball in the net.’ My sister passed it to me and I kicked it right in.”

More than 25 minutes passed before the Patriots propelled the ball into the net a second time. On a strike from 30 yards out, midfielder Arianna Barbieri found the far left corner, which was a surprise even to her.

“I decided to just wing it,” she said. “Watching it sail over and into the net felt really good.

We were pushing the ball as hard as we could trying to score early and shut them down.”

Ward Melville’s defense held down the Colonials in the second half, despite losing returning All-County defender Kayla Winicki to a torn ACL in the first game of the season against Northport. Liv Halvorsen has stepped up to fill her place on the back line, knocking away chances and battling for crucial possession, which she’ll need to continue if Ward Melville wants to win a League I title.

“We had some girls step in and take over and they’ve been great and adjusted well,” Ward Melville head coach John Diehl said.

“We’re gelling now and coming together in different ways.”

chance at a goal seconds earlier, when she pushed the ball past a fallen William Floyd goalkeeper, but a defender batted it away.

She said she was overjoyed to finally get on the stat sheet.

“I really wanted to score on senior night,” she said. “I tried, put all my effort behind the ball and it went in, and it felt amazing because I was working hard the whole game to get a goal. It was rewarding.”

The three seniors that scored on Ward Melville’s senior night are the three longest tenured members of the team.

“The girls get so excited for this day,” Diehl said of his 14 upperclassmen. “Their energy is high, their spirits are high and they ended up doing well. They’ve endured a lot and they’re a nice group of seniors. I love seeing them happy — it makes me smile.”

After what could potentially have been the last home game for Ward Melville this season, the Patriots soaked it in as the bench cleared in celebration of a successful shutout.

Ward Melville travels to Brentwood for the final game of the regular season Oct. 18. If the Patriots come away with a win, they’ll also grab a piece of the League I title for the first time in years.

“Brentwood is always a strong team,” Diehl said. “It’s always tough against Brentwood at their house, too, because they play on grass and we’re not used to that surface, but heading into this last week I like where we are.”

Instead of tearing down zombie homes, Brookhaven Town is now looking to repurpose them.

Supervisor Ed Romaine (R), alongside Long Island Builders Institute Chief Executive Officer Mitchell Pally, announced Oct. 3 the town is seeking to use fines paid by banks responsible for the housing crisis to pay for rehabilitation of abandoned homes in the town. In a collaborative effort, local builders and not-for-profit housing agencies will convert the blighted structures into homes for veterans and first-time homebuyers. The purpose of the press conference, held at a Port Jefferson Station home left vacant after Hurricane Sandy, was to call for funds from New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D) to go toward the initiative.

“Many of the houses on our vacant and abandoned list are in good shape and with some renovation, could be made habitable again,” Romaine said. “This proposal would generate construction jobs and allow families the opportunity to make firsttime home ownership a reality. It also will improve the quality of life in the neighborhood and increase property values for all the homes in the area.”

Since 2015, the town has been aggressive in addressing zombie homes through a demolition program. Some homes are in danger of collapse, with rehabilitation not an option. Romaine has now identified many vacant and abandoned houses that are good candidates for rehabilitation, adding he wishes the town could have gotten to some of the homes that were torn down prior to them being in such detrimental shape.

“We’re not only interested in tearing down houses,” Romaine said. “We’ve torn down close to 150 houses in this town that are zombie houses that have become so bad with mold, with the fact that they weren’t winterized and the pipes burst, with holes in the roof, with fires set, with squatters living in it, drug-use taking place around it — we’ve had no other choice but to demolish because it’s an unsafe structure. But we know if we had gotten to that house two-, or three-, or four-, or five years earlier we could have saved that house. We could have prevented the neighbors from living with something that looks terrible, and we could have gone in there and fixed up this house.”

The supervisor recently sent a letter to Schneiderman requesting Brookhaven Town work with his office to develop a grant program through a partnership with Long Island Builders Institute and a housing not-for-profit to “stabilize our communities by purchasing and rehabilitating zombie homes, making them eligible for sale as affordable housing,” he wrote in the letter. The program would allow for homes to be purchased directly from the not-for-profit entity, thus reducing the amount of time required to purchase the home from a lending institution.

“The maintenance of our local communities and the ability to provide affordable single-family housing opportunities is of vital importance to both our local governments as well as to the local building community, all of whose employees live and work on Long Island,” Pally said. “It is essential that we find a way in which to rehabilitate our local housing and allow for its sale to our local families.”

He added that the Long Island Builders Institute strongly supports this initiative and hopes the town can get the funds. “[We want] to rehabilitate and sell such homes to deserving families,” he said.

Sal Ferro, Alure Home Improvements president and representative of the Long Island Builders Institute, said he’s looking forward to his company partnering with the town to renovate the homes.

“I think this is a great opportunity and it shows that the partnerships of our elected officials working with our local associations — like Long Island Housing Partnership and Long Island Builders Institute — and local businesses, when we come together, when we join forces we can truly make change.”

Create a true mixed-party town board In the Oct. 5 Village Times Herald article [“Romaine eyes another term in Brookhaven”], Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine asserts incorrectly that the Brookhaven town board is a “mixed-party” board. On the contrary, the town board consists of four Republicans, one Conservative and one Democrat. The Conservative member caucuses with the four Republican members.

Romaine, as the Republican supervisor, also casts a vote.

Girls will soon be able to join the Cub Scouts and, in the future, have the chance to earn Eagle Scout status.

Scouting opportunities The Boy Scouts of America board of directors announced the organization will allow girls to join its Cub Scouts program beginning in 2018 and will create a Scouting program that will begin in 2019 for older girls, which will allow them to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

While the Cub Scouts will have gender-specific dens, we feel the move is a step in the right direction to providing more diverse opportunities for young women to learn about the world and develop life skills. The goal should be to give everyone choices, and for those options to be equal for boys and girls. Some girls may like hiking, camping or woodworking — more physically challenging than activities offered by the Girl Scouts. We would also implore Boy Scouts to want to educate themselves and strive for badges available to their female counterparts.

Becoming an Eagle Scout, which only one in 20 Boy Scouts attains, according to the Boy Scouts of America, is something every Scout should strive for. While we know a Gold Award was symbolically added to give girls something higher to attain, it’s nice to see the balance being done on this front to give the same weight to both achievements. In order to become an Eagle Scout, a child must earn 21 badges — 16 being in specific categories, so there’s a lot more that girls can learn when the badges are made available to them.

While we’re not pushing for girls to join the Boy Scouts, we think that there’s something that can be learned from making the choices and badges on both sides made available to all. There’s a benefit to learning how to tend to a garden and help animals, and there’s also good that comes from learning about architecture and astronomy.

Financial resources also play a part in leveling the playing field for both sexes. According to a 2013 Nonprofit Quarterly report, the net assets per member in the Girl Scouts are $54.54 compared to $333.61 per member in the Boy Scouts. More resources provide more opportunities for young people, and if both boys and girls can enjoy more activities due to this, our vote goes toward equaling this out.

We’re for gender-inclusive options. A couple of years ago, our Men and Women of the Year edition was changed to People of the Year. Currently, our editorial staff is keeping our eye on a situation in Commack where a male student at the high school is hoping to join the girls varsity gymnastic team. In New York state, there have been no boys gymnastics teams in schools since the early 2000s. The currently all-girl team would be his only option to compete in his chosen sport. While he has tried three times to become part of the team, Section XI has denied his request, claiming he holds a competitive edge over the girls.

We hope more can follow the Boy Scouts of America’s lead so that the power to choose remains in the hands of those interested in bettering themselves.

Conservative votes to one Democratic vote — it is disingenuous to call this a mixed board.

We have the opportunity this Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 7, to turn the Brookhaven town board into a true bipartisan board that can work together to get things done for the people of Brookhaven.

Valerie Cartright, councilwoman from District 1, the only Democrat on the present board, is running for re-election. There are five other Democrats running for town council in each of

the other five council districts.

In addition, other Democratic candidates include Jack Harrington running for town supervisor against Romaine, Anthony Portesy running for highway superintendent and Cindy Morris running for town clerk. By electing Democrats to the town, we will have a true mixed-party board, not one dominated by Republicans. Make your voice heard; vote on Nov. 7.

Perhaps the most dangerous president Donald Trump is perhaps the most dangerous president America has ever had. Tragically, far too many fellow Americans appear not to recognize the maniacal selfcenteredness of this appalling man.

As an example of his horrible egotism and his uncaring attitude toward humanity, let us be fully aware of how he wishes to dissolve or greatly diminish the power of regulations aimed at industry.

The purpose of those regulations is to control and lessen the clearly proven, daily pollution of the atmosphere, water and earth of America and the simultaneous gradual pollution of the whole planet. He prefers to let life on Earth to be threatened so that business profits will increase.

The vast majority of scientists everywhere are well aware of the immense threat of the destruction of the planet. Are we nonscientists going to argue with the thousands of researchers and theorists who have uncovered the causes of the moribund condition of our Earth?

Are we going to deny what science

has shown to be true? Don’t we want to prevent life from moving toward extinction and work hard to ensure that our children and grandchildren will survive?

Are we going to allow the constant stream of ignorant antagonism that Trump bellows forth almost daily against the undeniable truth of the theory of climate change? He is a completely self-centered, money-mad maniac who cares nothing about what is happening to Earth as a result of industrial polluters. His primary interest is aimed almost solely at increasing profits.

Those who blindly and ignorantly defend him have failed to analyze his words and deeds carefully. He has contradicted himself repeatedly since he began to run for office. Besides ignoring the fact of climate change, he has also insulted a wide variety of Americans because of their race, disabilities, gender, religion, class, political beliefs, etc. He is a disgrace, an enormous embarrassment. Most Americans dislike him and millions

of people in other nations regard him as crazed and foolish. Some dangerous nations — Russia, for example — are assisted (intentionally?) by his speech and behavior in moving closer to their goal of destroying America.

Thus, impeachment time for Trump has arrived. Let Congress finally go forward with it now before America collapses. Let him be impeached. Let him be tried. Let us hope that he is found guilty and is removed from the White House.

If I could get close to the face of the Statue of Liberty — which rises majestically just 50 miles west of us here in the Three Villages — I believe I would see tears welling in her eyes. Near her is engraved the moving poem of Emma Lazarus; its final line is, “I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” Alas, that “golden door” may become a door of black lead because of Donald Trump’s corrosive deeds and acid speech. Trump’s critics lack respect for our nation With respect to the “Watch your language President Trump” in your Letters to the Editor page, appearing in the Oct. 5 issue, I have the following points and questions to raise to Mr. Zappulla: Did you express equivalent concern as a bad example set for our younger people when U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D) went on prime time television and referred to President Trump and most of his cabinet as “a bunch of scumbags?” She is, or was, looked up to by many young people of color.

Did you express equivalent concern as a bad example set for our younger people when comedian Kathy Griffin displayed

a decapitated head of President Trump? She is, or was, a celebrity looked up to by younger people, and older.

Did you express equivalent concern as a bad example for our younger people when Madonna, on Inauguration Day, shouted how she regretted not being able to blow up the White House?

You know she is widely admired among younger people.

Do you feel and express equivalent concern that millionaire, spoiled NFL football players dishonor our country, its citizens, soldiers who fought and died for you, me and, yes, the NFL millionaires who kneel during the playing of the

national anthem? Now you know. sir, how worshipped these football players are by our younger people — far beyond any president.

I don’t recall any time in our history when professional athletes publicly disdained our great nation, our veterans and the office of the president of the United States.

Mr. Zappulla, your political leanings are very clear. I really don’t believe you are at all concerned about the impact of President Trump’s use of foul language on our younger people. You are simply amplifying his statement to support your left leaning politics.

OpiniOn From Machiavelli to half marathons, relationships are limitless

’m going to start with a headline relationship that would make Niccolò Machiavelli proud and work my way toward life on Main Street.

You remember Machiavelli? That’s the author who wrote “The Prince,” which was first published way back in 1532, about how to manipulate people to survive and use any means available.

Wait, please don’t go. There won’t be a test and that’s the last date I’ll put in this column.

Promise.

No, no, they said earlier this week, that wasn’t so. They are buddies and they agree on everything. Well, almost everything. According to sources, the senior senator also wants two scoops of ice cream when he visits the White House, but the commander in chief has no intention of changing his ice cream policies, even for his BFN. Anyway, what brought these two older white men together? Did they talk about what it’s like to be misunderstood? Were they eager to find a friend in Washington, D.C., and did neither of them want to get a dog, as the expression goes?

No, they came together because they need to. It’s so much easier, they decided, to agree and to work together than to disagree. That sounds reasonable, but what would Machiavelli think? I suspect he’d be thrilled. After all, it’s about surviving, learning to fight another day and moving the chess pieces of life around on the board.

Fortunately, and I won’t put the date in here because I don’t want to break

my promise, chess was invented before “The Prince” was published. If you want to find it, you can look it up on the internet, which is the source of all information and misinformation in the universe. So, Machiavelli would have known about chess and the need to sacrifice the short-term humiliation of needing anyone and the mutually assured long-term gain of having allies in Washington.

OK, so let’s step away from the seat of our democracy and go out into the real world. Why do the rest of us need relationships and what can they do for us?

Are we like ants and bees, who need each other for specialized jobs?

Yes and no. Certainly, I would have a hard time building my own house.

I feel as if I have an incompetence allergy to the words “some assembly required.” I am also visual-arts deficient.

People offer all kinds of false modesty, saying things like, “I used to ski a little” or “I used to do a bit of singing,” when they almost made the Olympic team and were a few auditions short

of starring next to Julie Andrews on Broadway. I, however, am not being modest. If I were responsible for building walls and decorating them, we’d be living in caves and would be staring at uninspiring chalk drawings of woolly mammoths.

So, yes, our individual deficiencies suggest we do need each other. But, maybe, we benefit not just what we get from others.

One of my good friends is in a new relationship. He has always been in decent physical shape. He’s not much of a reader and has shied away from even the shortest of reading assignments.

Anyway, he’s dating a woman who is a regular runner and an avid reader. Lo and behold, he recently beamed after completing a half marathon and is happily building his own personal library.

Maybe the best and longest lasting relationships are those that push us to find the best in ourselves. It’s not exactly Machiavelli 101 and it doesn’t require a press conference, but maybe the right relationships are those that help us develop in unexpected ways.

The unknown prince and the world of imperfect children

he recently aired story of Queen Elizabeth II’s uncle forcefully reminded me of my mother. I was probably thinking of my mother, since it would have been her birthday this past Monday. She was born in 1906, one year after Prince John.

It was not at all unusual at that time and through much of the ensuing 20th century for families to hide their imperfect children. Often those were separated from their families and sent to institutions, where they died, perhaps from inattention or wanton neglect. Another such prominent family with a less-than-perfect child was that of Arthur Miller, the acclaimed writer of morality plays. He and his third wife had a mentally retarded son who was separated from his parents and sister, given over to the care of an older, childless couple and barely acknowledged, an apparent embarrassment to his cerebral father.

Into this world my younger sister, Maxine, was born in 1942. The courageous outing of their disabled sister by the Kennedys in the 1960s was also a transformative moment in this change from hiding away children with handicaps to helping them develop as humans entitled to their lives.

Fully supported in her decision by my father, my mother fiercely insisted that my sister had every right to be loved and brought up alongside her other two children. She then devoted the rest of her life to caring for and teaching Maxine to the extent possible.

There were no public schools to help the mentally challenged at the time any more than there were facilities to aid those with physical disabilities.

But my mother, with infinite patience, taught my “profoundly retarded” (that was her diagnosis) sister to read and do simple arithmetic on perhaps a secondgrade level. In addition, Maxine was accepted into a private school for those with disabilities run by the Catholic

My sister was a delightful member of our family with a wickedly good sense of humor and a heart full of kindness and love. She enriched all our lives and lived until 2008, something of a record for those with Down syndrome.

Maxine was unlucky to be born with a severe disability and in the first half of the 20th century. But she was incredibly lucky to have my father and mother as her parents. My mother completely ignored the stares of passersby on the streets and on the buses of New York who had never before seen a person with Down syndrome.

She valiantly withstood the ire of her sisters, who emotionally urged her to “put Maxine away,” the euphemistic phrase for institutionalizing, because she would ruin the good marriage prospects of the next generation if she were seen. And she integrated Maxine into her daily life to the edification of the neighborhood, whose residents came to greatly respect my parents and enjoy Maxine.
