Common Core 2.0: State Education Department proposes changes

By AndreA PAldy After six years of controversy surrounding the adoption and implementation of Common Core and standardized tests associated with it, the New York State Education Department released a new draft of learning standards Sept. 21.

The proposed changes come as the department attempts to respond to ongoing criticism, while maintaining its stated goal of rigor and higher standards for students. The result could mean significant change to both English language arts (ELA) and math learning standards and a greater emphasis on communication with parents, students and educators.

Kevin Scanlon, assistant superintendent for educational services for Three Village said it’s too early to tell whether any of the changes will be fully implemented.

“So far it just seems to be cosmetic pieces,” Scanlon said at the meeting. “However, we need to delve a little further into it to see what potential impact it may have.”

He also said Three Village is providing feedback on the possible changes and will continue to work with the SED. In a press release announcing the proposed adjustments, the state’s education department said its aim is to ensure that the new standards and their implementation are age-appropriate, particularly in primary grades. The new guidelines also propose additional teacher resources, guidance and

“These changes reflect what I have heard from parents, teachers and administrators over the past year in my travels across the state,” Education Commissioner Mary Ellen Elia said in a prepared statement.

The draft committees, made up of more than 130 teachers, administrators, parents and college educators, volunteered from all regions of the state. They represent the “Big Five” districts — New York City, Buf-

falo, Rochester, Syracuse and Yonkers — as well as urban, suburban and rural districts throughout the state, Elia said. These committees are suggesting that glossaries be used to explain the value and expectations of the education department’s learning standards to all stakeholders.

The ELA draft includes a preface and introduction describing the learning standard’s role within a curriculum. The committee, which worked with a child develop-

ment expert, proposes more emphasis on the importance of play-based learning in the primary grades. The ELA draft revisions also seek to streamline literary and nonfiction texts across grades, while reorganizing writing standards.

According to the draft document, math standards will be revised to clarify expectations “without limiting instructional flexibility.” Math committees also recommended clarifications to “better understand the goals of the learning standards, Elia said. The revisions seek to “define the progression of skills,” so that there is continuity and a connection from grade to grade.

Other changes include creating a balance between skill comprehension, application and performance.

The recommendations of committee members — described by Elia as “dedicated” — are built, in part, on those of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) Common Core Task Force Report published in December, a public survey and feedback from discussions the commissioner had with parents and educators across the state.

The committees also worked with special education and English language teachers to address criticisms that the standards are not suitable for students in those areas.

Brookhaven town supervisor ed romaine wants to maintain the town’s AAA credit rating, and the 2017 tentative operating budget reflects that.

One area that saw an increase in funds for 2017 was snow removal, which now stands at just under $6 million.

“If we do have a year of little snow, we hope to be able to move some of that budget over to highway maintenance [budget] lines to increase the spending there if we don’t need the snow budget,” Wright said.

The town was able save money by eliminating 13 full-time positions, which were left vacant primarily by retirements and resignations during the course of the year, according to Wright.

The town board will hold a public hearing and vote to approve the tentative 2017 budget Nov. 10 at 5 p.m.

Fire Prevention Open House In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, Setauket Fire District will host its annual Fire Prevention Open House Friday, Oct. 14, from 7 to 10 p.m.

The event will be held at the Setauket Fire Department Hook and Ladder Company 1, located at 394 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook.

A 51-year-old man from Huntington was driving a 1996 Jeep on Canal Road near the intersection of Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station Oct. 4 when he was pulled over, police said. He was found to be driving with as suspended license. He was arrested and charged with seconddegree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

At Holiday Inn Express Hotel on Nesconset Highway in Centereach Oct. 3, a 34-yearold man from Centereach stole a wallet with cash and credit cards, according to police. He was arrested Oct. 6 and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny.

Mailbox mutilated

He was also driving while intoxicated, according to police. He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and driving while intoxicated.

At about 2 p.m. Oct. 2, someone stole a Visa credit card from a home on Sunset Avenue in Selden and made a purchase with it, according to police.

A key suspect

At Lowe’s Home Improvement in Stony Brook Oct. 9 at about 11:45 a.m., someone took two keyless door locks from a shelf, exited without paying and returned to the store to return the items for a gift card, according to police.

Lucky charms

Two tires were punctured on a 2006 Nissan parked outside of a home on Charm City Drive in Port Jefferson Station at about 12:30 a.m. Oct. 9, according to police.

Shopping spree stopped

A 28-year-old woman from Patchogue knowingly used a stolen credit card three times on Sept. 11 at three different locations, according to police. She also attempted to steal a 2010 Infiniti from a parking lot on North Ocean Avenue in Holtsville on the same day, police said.

She was arrested Oct. 6 in Selden and charged with third-degree grand larceny and three counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Don’t play with food

The window screens of a home on Perigee Drive in Stony Brook were damaged when eggs were thrown at the home at about 9:45 p.m. Oct. 9, police said.

Tire cutter

The rear tires of a 2003 Jeep were slashed while the car was in the parking lot of Brewology295 bar and restaurant on Main Street in Port Jefferson at about 12:20 a.m. Oct. 8, according to police.

Makings of a bad day

A wallet was left on the counter at Starbucks on Route 25A in Miller Place at about 9 a.m. Oct. 8, and was gone when the owner returned to find it, police said.

Motorcycle mischief

A motorcycle was stolen from the side yard of a home on Nesconset Highway in Mount Sinai at about 2 p.m. Oct. 8, according to police.

While at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital on North Country Road in Port Jefferson Oct. 7, a patient’s debit card and medication were stolen, police said.

Long Island’s last magic shop won’t disappear anytime soon

By Dave Paone Port Jefferson Station is able to make a claim no other place on Long Island can: It’s home to the last brick-and-mortar magic store in all of Nassau and Suffolk County.

Ronjo Magic & Costumes on Route 112 is the last of its breed, yet doesn’t look as if it’ll be performing a disappearing act any time soon.

The 2,000 square-foot store is stocked with magic trick pieces, novelty items, costumes and a room for performances. The costume articles include wigs, masks and an extensive line of hats that hang from the ceiling. The novelty section is small, but contains the usual gags, like exploding cigarettes, hand buzzers, itching powder and the obligatory rubber chickens.

Last month, Hope Galasso, of Bellport, discovered Ronjo through a Google search and brought her 15-year-old nephew Zack Galasso to the store to purchase a Chinese coin trick for $7.

While Halloween is the bread-and-butter season for costume sales, it’s not the

only time they’re in demand. Last year, 19-year-old Suffolk County Community College student Christine Day came into the store with her brother and a friend.

The trio was preparing to attend Comic Con, a convention for comics, graphic novels, animé, video games, toys and movies, in New York City. Her brother was dressing as Jack Skellington from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, and her friend was dressing as Beetlejuice. The three of them needed makeup.

Owner Ron Diamond provided them with just what they needed. “We looked great,” Day said.

She also said Diamond was “really helpful” and “inviting,” so when he offered her a part-time job at the store, she took it.

Currently she handles data entry, shipment of online orders, and works the counter for costumes and makeup.

Diamond’s lifelong interest in magic began in 1966 when his mother bought him a magic kit called Box-o-Magic for $3 at Billy Blake’s department store in Setauket. Then 8 years old, Diamond said the box con-

tained just a handful of tricks, but enough to get him started.

Diamond continued to learn tricks, but with no magic store nearby, he resorted to learning new illusions from library books, and by age 12, even started to handcraft his own tricks with the help of a classmate.

Diamond got the itch to perform.

So at 13, he recruited a girl named Joanne from down the block to play the part of his onstage assistant. He wanted to give Joanne top billing, and name the act Joron, but his sister, Deborah, said he should call it Ronjo, so he did.

Ronjo’s first public performances were free for local charities in Suffolk. Since the two performers were only in eighth grade, his mother had to drive them to wherever they were performing.

Eventually, the charity work led to paying gigs. Their first was at a birthday party for a 6-year-old, where they made $6. Diamond kept $4, and paid Joanne $2.

A year later, Diamond became more polished and added new tricks to the act, and with it, the price of a show jumped to $35. The clients from the first job called to book him again, but when he told them the new rate, they hung up.

At 15, he thought he could make additional money by giving lessons and selling magic tricks in a retail setting. He talked one of the merchants at the Old Town Village indoor flea market in Setauket into letting him rent space in his booth, where he set up a 2 feet by 4 feet showcase with 12 tricks for sale.

The retail locations kept changing, and with each move, got bigger. Diamond added more showcases with more tricks for sale, and eventually landed his own 13 feet by 100 feet store at the Arcade Shopping Center in Port Jefferson Station at 16 years old. He stayed there for 14 years.

As the years went on, Diamond became a professional magician, but Joanne was no longer in the act, because her father wanted her to get a “real job.” By 1982, he had a crew working for him, including, at times, a driver, a stagehand and other performers including a sword swallower, belly dancer and disc jockey.

On occasion, customers in his store would ask for wigs, makeup and costumes.

Since he never says no to a customer, he’d get whatever items they were looking for.

In 1991, Diamond hired Pete Albertson, who was one of his students, to manage the store. He’s been there for 25 years.

Diamond purchased his current location in 2000. When Magic Shop in Hicksville closed three years ago, Ronjo became the last surviving magic store on Long Island.

The storefront acquired a little slice of cyberspace and joined the internet in 2003.

The website saw tremendous growth over a five-year period, which peaked in 2008, almost to the point where physical store was no longer needed. But all that changed when more and more retailers began selling online, and cyber sales dropped considerably.

Now, there are “more websites than customers,” he said.

On the magic side, Ronjo’s customers range from the loyal to the new. Mike Maimone of Port Jefferson Station has been purchasing tricks from Ronjo since he was 12. He’s now 48. He owns nearly 350 decks of cards — each for a different illusion — plus 250 other items for tricks. More than half of them were purchased at Ronjo.

The uncertainty of operating a shop that sells exclusively what amount to nonessential items looms over Diamond and his business, but for now, Long Island’s only magic store is still here.

“Everything here is a luxury,” he said.

When Magic Shop in Hicksville closed three years ago, Ronjo Magic & Costumes in Port Jefferson Station became the last magic shop on Long Island.

Three Village students opt out of State tests, opt In for Regents

By AndreA PAldy Three Village school board members received mostly good news last week as they learned that student performance remains steady, district students continue to excel on Regents exams and the graduation rate holds at 99 percent.

Enrollment in Three Village schools, however, continues to decline and the opt-out rate for the contentious state standardized tests continues to be high.

That was the gist of the report given by Kevin Scanlon, assistant superintendent of educational services, at the Sept. 28 board of education meeting.

Scanlon reviewed state assessment and Regents scores, as well as graduation statistics from the 2015-16 school year.

He told board members that the district’s current enrollment is 6,271, down 3 percent from this time last year.

The incoming kindergarten class numbers 339 students, compared to the junior class, which has 644 students and is the district’s largest.

Despite having fewer students, the district has nine additional teachers, enabling administrators to add electives and decrease study halls at the secondary level and reduce class sizes in all grades, especially in the elementary schools, Scanlon said.

When it came to the controversial state standardized tests administered to students in grades 3 through 8, the opt-out rate soared last spring, Scanlon reported. He said that the scores for English Language Arts and math only reflect about a third of the eligible student body and are not particularly useful to the district. Teachers’ assessments, as well as the district’s own screenings, have been more effective, he said.

Scanlon added that 66 percent of eligible Three Village students opted out of the ELA last spring. This is up from 58 percent the previous year. Math opt-outs also increased from 57 percent in the previous year to 70 percent in 2016.

These numbers are higher than the 21 percent state average reported by the State Education Department.

The district’s proficiency rates surpassed the average rates for Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as for New York State, Scanlon said. Proficiency rates went up statewide by 6.6 points to 37.9 percent for ELA and one point to 39.1 percent for math.

For Three Village, the ELA proficiency in grades three through eight ranged from 57 percent to 78 percent, while math proficiency — excluding eighth grade math — ranged from 62 percent to 87 percent.

Eighth grade math scores showed only 21 percent proficiency because only a small portion of eighth graders were tested, Scanlon said. A number of the district’s eighth graders take Algebra, and therefore take the Algebra Regents exam instead of the state math assessment, he explained.

The rate of passing for the Common Core Algebra Regents exam was 96 percent, with 75 percent of the students achieving mastery — a score of 85 percent or higher.

When compared to scores in nearby districts — Commack, Half Hollow Hills, Harborfields, Hauppauge, Northport, Port Jefferson and Smithtown — Three Village ranked either first or second in proficiency for the ELA, and it ranked first or second in math for grades 3 through 6. It ranked fourth for grade 7 and fifth for grade 8.

District students continued to excel on Regents exams.

Students who took the first-ever Common Core ELA Re-

gents exam passed at a rate of 97 percent, with 90 percent also achieving mastery. The rates of passage for social studies and most sciences were in the 90s, with high rates of mastery. Physics had an 89 percent rate of passage.

Most math Regents pass rates were in the high 80s, except for Common Core Algebra II, which was 77 percent.

Three Village students also performed well on the SATs, scoring above the state average in both the math and the critical reading sections.

Continuing the trend from the year before, the class of 2016 had a 99 percent graduation rate and 95 percent college acceptance rate. Last year’s graduating class boasted the highest number of Advanced Placement scholars since the district started tracking in 1999, Scanlon reported.

Seventy-six percent of 2016 graduates went on to fouryear colleges, and 20 percent went to two-year colleges.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, farming was mainly a local occupation. Almost every family in a community had a farm to supply them with food for themselves and their farm animals.

Road transportation by horse and wagon on colonial roads and by sloop and schooner on Long Island waters was slow and subject to weather changes.

All that began to change in 1825 with the completion of the Erie Canal. Overnight, the cost of freight transportation from Lake Erie to New York City went from $100 a ton to $10 a ton. This farming revolution meant that farm products could now be grown where they produced the greatest yield.

The Erie Canal, which cut in half the time it took for freight to move from the mid-west to the east, was slow in comparison with rail transportation. With the coming of the railroad in the second half of the 19th century, the rapid movement of passengers took a giant leap forward. But steam power was in its infancy and it took almost another half century for railroads to have enough power to move freight in

competition with the large number of canals built after the success of the Erie Canal.

As more and more rail lines were constructed on Long Island, across New York State and the American frontier, Long Island farming continued to change. Farmers, especially near the rail lines, increasingly turned to dairy cattle to supply New York City with milk and dairy products. By the 20th century, Long Island continued to provide large quantities of farm products, but farming became more specialized.

Market crops, such as potatoes, cauliflower and strawberries, were grown widely.

The 1920 census noted one worker in four in the U.S. was a farmer. Corn was the most important crop. The six leading crops in New York were hay and forage, potatoes, fruits and nuts, corn, oats and wheat. New York led the country in the production of apples, maple syrup and potatoes. It was second in production of buckwheat, grapes, hay and forage, maple sugar, pears, raspberries and loganberries. New York was also one of the top three states in the production of certain market crops, including green

beans, beets, Brussel sprouts, cabbages, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, lettuce, onions, green peas, radishes, rhubarb, squashes, sweet corn and turnips. New York was second in the U.S. in the value of dairy products, third in honey, fifth in horses, 10th in eggs, 20th in wool and 23rd in swine.

Locally, in 1926, Bruno J. Beck moved to East Setauket from Riverhead. He purchased a large area of farmland and began farming one major crop: potatoes. He was the first. In 1929, Eugene Geihweiler purchased a 165-acre farm in Stony Brook and planted a variety of crops. In 1935, Stanley and Jennie Detmer moved to Setauket and began large-scale farming. Like the Becks they were successful and were able to purchase the 120-acre farm that was a part of Samuel Thompson’s, and then Woodhull Satterly Rowland’s farm from the early 18th to the early 20th century. Detmer purchased the farm in 1942 and the homestead in 1944.

In 1936, Charles Botto purchased 150 acres of woods and farmland in Stony Brook and cleared the land. General crops were grown at first, but soon Botto grew only potatoes and cucumbers. In 1946,

With Long Island’s change from wheat and other grains to market crops, the grist mill became less important to local farmers and to the communities around the mill. From the 1660s to the 1820s, the mill was the center of village commerce and the only industry in many communities. The miller, like the general store owner, would collect debts only when the farmer sold his crops. The miller also func-

tioned as a bank, making loans to farmers until harvest time. In 1935, the Setauket Grist Mill shut down and the property around the mill was purchased by Ward Melville to build a park. In 1947, the Stony Brook Grist Mill ceased operation. The last miller, Frank Schaefer, had been milling custom, stone-ground flour.

Behavior bolstering grant received W. S. Mount Elementary School was a winner in the Safe Fleet 2016 United Against Bullying Grant Program.

The school was honored for its PBIS (positive behavior intervention supports) Program, called Mount SCORES. Within the program’s matrix, the school works to promote the expectation that students will be self-controlled, caring, openminded, respectful, encouraging and safe.

The monies received through the grant will be used to purchase reinforcers as well as partially fund a school mascot to assist with rein-

honorable mention in the “2-D Mixed Media” category.

The project calls for students to create art based on a global issue within the infinitely interlinking shape of a hexagon — a metaphor for interconnectedness — according to the organization’s website.

This year’s theme was “We Do: Acting Interdependently.”

OBITUARIES Chuck Glaser

Chuck Glaser, 75, a longtime Setauket resident, died Sept. 14.

Chuck was known for his happy, positive attitude.

His love of people and history was evident in his ability as a conversationalist and teacher. A longtime advocate of the Three Village Historical Society, he served as vice president and fixture in the local spirit tours.

He had a 32-year career as a pilot for TWA, flying internationally, serving as an instructor pilot on numerous aircraft and as chair of the Professional Standards Committee of the Airline Pilots Association.

Prior to TWA he was a decorated Vietnam War veteran, awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and 43 Air Medals.

He completed over 900 medevac and resupply air missions in Vietnam. After his retirement, he was a substitute teacher for Three Village school district and commo-

dore of the Classic Yacht Association, USA fleet.

He served as beach chairman of The Old Field Club and was a member of Stony Brook Yacht Club. As part of the Caroline Church congregation for more than 30 years, he was a Sunday school teacher and vestry member.

He is survived by his mother Isabel; loving wife Eva; daughters Allison and Leslie; grandson Beau and sister Roxanne. The family requests all donations be made to the Carriage Shed Restoration at the Caroline Church.

Barbara Lombardi

Barbara Lombardi, 79, of East Setauket, died Sept. 10. She was born April 16, 1937, in New York, the daughter of Lewis and Eleanor Woodrum.

Barbara was a retired administrator for

Stony Brook University Hospital who volunteered and baked for St. Gerard Majella Church. She enjoyed crocheting, traveling, cooking and gardening.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Diane (Arthur) and Joan (John); sons, Joseph (Carol) and Thomas (Kimberly); seven grandchildren; sister Christine; brother Ernest; and many other family members and friends.

Her husband, Joseph, preceded her in death.

Judith Koehn

Judith Koehn, 73, of Park Ridge, Illinois, formerly of Stony Brook, died Oct. 3. She was born March 16, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of John and Grace Hanratty.

Judith was a longtime science teacher in Three Village school district at both

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School and Ward Melville High School. Her daughter Rachel Pothast, son-in-law Matt Pothast and grandsons Nicholas and Ryan survive her.

Her parents and her brother Bill preceded her in death.

Pieter Arjen Keuskamp, M.D., 72, of East Setauket, died Sept. 1. He was born Feb. 6, 1944, in Holland, the son of Diedrik and Annamarie Keuskamp.

Dr. Keuskamp was a neurosurgeon at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown.

It provides emotional and financial assistance to individuals living with sarcoidosis and work in conjunction to help find a cure.

The Rare Disease Day Forum is an effort by this organization to create greater awareness about diseases like sarcoidosis.

Government resources for opioid addiction at a glance

State legislation

In the 2016 legislative session, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed a comprehensive package of bills, aimed at increasing access to treatment, expanding community prevention strategies and limiting the overprescription of opioids in the state.

Some of the most important parts of the bills are highlighted below: • Legislation now ensures insurers must cover “necessary” inpatient services for substance use disorder treatments for as long as an individual needs them. Review from the company can only begin 14 days after treatment to ensure each patient has two weeks of uninterrupted and covered care.

• Insurers are prohibited from requiring prior approval for emergency supplies of these medications.

• Insurers must use objective stateapproved criteria to determine the level of care for individuals suffering from substance abuse.

• Insurers must cover the costs of Narcan to families with individuals suffering from substance abuse.

• Families now offered 72 hours of emergency treatment, instead of 48 hours, for family members so they can be stabilized and connected to longer-term addiction

treatment options while also balancing individual rights of the incapacitated individuals.

• Requires hospitals to provide follow-up service options to individuals upon hospital discharge to connect patients with nearby treatment options to provide continuous medical care.

• Reducing opioid prescription limits from 30 days to seven days, with exceptions of chronic pain and other conditions.

• Health care professionals must complete three hours of education every three years on addiction, pain management and palliative care.

State budget

The 2016-17 state government has allotted funding to help curb the growing substance abuse problem. A breakdown of the budget below: • Nearly $200 million through the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services will be used to combat the heroin and opioid epidemic,

an 82 percent increase in state spending since 2011.

• This investment includes $66 million for residential treatment beds, including counseling and support services for roughly 8,000 individuals.

• $38 million to fund medication-assisted treatment programs that serve about 12,000 clients in residential or outpatient settings.

• $25 million in funding for state-operated addiction treatment centers.

• $24 million for outpatient services that provide group and individual counseling.

• $8 million for crisis/detox programs to manage and treat withdrawal from heroin and opioids.

NYS Heroin and Opioid Task Force Comprised of health care providers, policy advocates, educators, parents and New Yorkers in recovery, the task force will build on the state’s previous efforts and use its expertise and first-hand experience to develop a comprehensive action

plan to combat the state’s opioid epidemic.

The task force will focus immediately on expanding awareness of heroin and opioid addiction; enhance statewide prevention efforts; increase access to treatment; improve support for those in recovery; and concentrate on law enforcement recommendations to reduce the supply of opioids. Members plan to hold public sessions across the state.

Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, 2016

• Signed into law by President Barack Obama (D) in July.

• $8.3 billion in addiction funding.

• $160 million for the expansion of medication-assisted treatment options, including grants that will be awarded to state, local and tribal governments to provide opioid abuse services.

• $80 million in funding to help prevent and treat addiction on a local level through community-based education, prevention, treatment and recovery programs.

• $103 million to establish a communitybased competitive grant program to address and treat the problems of heroin and opioid addiction and abuse.

• Grants will help fund programs that could expand treatment alternatives to incarcerations — with consent of attorneys and participants — for individuals who meet the program’s criteria.

BY marisa vitali Life happens in the in-between spaces, from here to there. Recovery happens in the in-between spaces, when no one is looking and no one is around. How do we choose to live? How do we choose to be in those quiet moments with self? Have I filled my void, my spirit with happiness?

Or do I look outside myself for a drink, a drug, food, sex, shopping, cigarettes; to make myself not feel; to fill the void, the gaping black hole of low self-esteem and low self-worth?

I’ve learned that in recovery I have a choice. I’m no longer a slave to my next bag of dope and I can choose to see the glass half empty or half full.

Myself, I want it all, but when I logically prioritize, longevity and quality of life are on the top of the list. Every minute I spend obliter-

ated is one less finite minute I have to feel life.

I do my best on a daily basis to choose happiness; to live happy, joyous and free.

Recovery allows me to be in a place of rediscovery. To relearn the wisdom I was born with and somehow let slip between the fingers of my mind.

Just to be living is truly a gift and one not to be squandered on those people, places and things that cause us pain. Life is a gift to be celebrated and shared with those we love and who bring us even more joy than we may already be feeling.

Having this opportunity to live in recovery, I so know it didn’t have to be this way.

I always say: My life is nothing what I thought it would be and yet nothing I ever could have imagined it to be.

I don’t know the source of life, but I do know the humility I feel when confronted by nature and the magical way everything is prepared for every situation it could possibly encounter. That delusion in and of itself eliminates anxiety and I’m in deep.

I have come to the realization that living life to the fullest is not about my achievements — it is about my breath.

This moment, right here and now. Feeling everything there is to feel and experience in this one breath of in and out. This is what is intended. To soak in every drop of this thing called life.

We all intellectually know about breath and present moments so I will spare you the details in favor of encouraging you to do what you truly desire before it’s too late.

Or keep collecting excuses that will serve you well in your final moments.

Because all we really have is today.

There is no need to mar this experience with drugs and alcohol in order to escape this moment, this breath.

Not to make you nauseous with platitudes, but I do feel an urge to recap the classics. Living at the highest-level means feeling good about your life. There’s give and take without malice or greed, there is healthy socialization with challenging, stimulating people of integrity. There is reverence way before relevance, so if you turned down that road, I suggest you make a U-turn in the first driveway.

That’s what we’re all here for: to live the good, the bad and the ugly. To feel, to grow, to better ourselves and to help one another. We are here to serve, regardless of our elitist aspirations, so share your talents and energy freely. Our influence is exponential and will outlive us for eternity.

If one falls, we all fall, and so it’s a treasure and an opportunity to uplift one another in times of need with love, compassion and authenticity.

We all fall eventually. I fall at the door of a true friend. One of the most vivifying

experiences is the exchange of love, and that I’m not afraid to express anymore.

This life, this recovery is a journey; it’s all in the same, with twists and turns, mountains and mole hills.

No matter what I choose not to use. I am evolving into whatever my imagination is capable of, without ego and defects of character that keep me small, dictating how it all should play out.

We are so much more powerful than we could possibly acknowledge. Tap into that source. Your source of creation, whatever that may be for you. The answers you seek are deep within.

There but for the grace of God go I. Live free, as the only thing constant is change.

So change! Do something different. I dare you. If nothing changes, nothing changes.

Simple yet true. The clock is ticking. Seize the day and all that carpe diem s---.

But seriously, take a look around – this is all of your creation. You did this, you made this happen, you made these choices.

Will you run and hide like you’ve always done, or will you stand tall in the eye of the storm and dance in the rain?

We all have choices. I know what I choose. Do you? I dare you to live.

BY TraceY farrell In 2002, my 16-year-old son Kevin had surgery on his shoulder for a football injury. He was prescribed 60 Vicodin pills with no other instructions but to take one or two of them every four to six hours for pain.

I didn’t know they weren’t like antibiotics, and you weren’t supposed to take all 60. He was still in pain, so they gave him 60 more.

Well, guess who is now addicted to them? He was buying them during lunch.

This is the high school quarterback. His girlfriend is the cheerleading captain. He is beautiful, loving, fun and funny. His friends love him. His teachers and coaches love him. He has not an enemy in the world. He graduates. He works. He is a great kid.

Kevin chose to smoke pot instead of taking the pills soon after high school, but at some point he went back to the pills — especially since I was on him all of the time to stop smoking. He had multiple concussions over his high school football career. After his last one, I saw a change in his personality. He was easily angered, depressed, anxious — all things he was not before.

I didn’t know at the time that marijuana and opioids help make all of those symptoms so much better. The drugs make them disappear. I didn’t know that the only enemy he did have was the one within himself.

When Kevin went back to the pills, he began snorting them this time. And a lot of them. Once I saw a powder residue on his glass desk and, only knowing what I saw on TV, I put it on my tongue to see if it would numb it. Nope, not cocaine.

I knew deep down something was going on. He didn’t shower as often or take care of his teeth. Changes in his habits were starting to happen.

These Oxycodone pills are expensive, and make you painfully sick when you don’t have them. An addict becomes so desperate that they will beg, borrow and steal to get them — literally. Eventually when you have exhausted stealing your family’s available cash, you steal their jewelry, sports memorabilia and anything else of value you can sneak out of the house. You write bad checks from your mom’s bank account. Eventually you realize there’s an alternative available and you turn to heroin. It’s cheap, and readily available. You just have to put money in your mailbox and drugs appear moments later.

That point happened some time in 2011. I assume he started snorting it before he shot it.

Nine years in and I am still clueless, uneducated, unaware to so much of it. Kevin never, ever looked high in front of me. I was missing spoons, which are used to melt the heroin down to a soluble form, but I still thought

Tracey Budd and her son Kevin Norris in 2010 maybe they were thrown out by mistake? Yes, he had been to rehab, but I didn’t know that it didn’t fix you. I didn’t know that me giving him no option but to enter rehab wouldn’t work. I didn’t know that he had to want to be in recovery.

I learned how to be manipulated. I enabled everything. I believed every lie he told me and would hand over money in fear he would be killed for the money he owed.

Eventually, he must leave the house. Kevin would live in his car, on which I was now making the payments and insuring. It’s winter and I cannot fathom the thought of him in a car at Christmas, so I get him an apartment.

I sent his stepfather over many times to see if he was alive when I couldn’t get in touch with him. I even called 911 on him when I thought he was suicidal, which resulted in a short hospital hold. I started to understand that he does not want this for himself, but doesn’t know how to stop. He fears withdrawal, and I hear his pain and cries when he begs me for money because he is so sick. He is eventually hospitalized for a blood infection. I realize I can no longer keep him in that apartment.

I clean the place out.

He didn’t need much food. The only thing in the fridge was water. I find all the things he has used as a tourniquet. There is an amazing amount of plastic garbage bag drawstrings removed from bags, Q-tips everywhere with the cotton taken off which are used as filters.

So many water bottle caps. So many syringes.

I didn’t want my son to die, but I’m realizing I’m making it more comfortable for him.

Through most of his addiction he was highly functioning, always holding down a job. This was no longer the case.

He gets out of the hospital and is back to his car. I’m giving him $20 a day. He gets food stamps and Medicaid from the Department of Social Services. I find he sells what’s on his food stamp card. I pump gas in his car, but I do not hand over more cash. There were times I threw money in his car so angrily at him when he asked.

I struggled between loving him and hating him.

He began living in a hotel with his dealer and got arrested for possession of a syringe.

He’s assigned a public defender, but of course Mom pays the fees and it’s knocked down.

But a few days prior, he made the choice on his own — which is key — to seek help.

He made the calls on his own, instead of me doing all of the legwork, to enter South Oaks Hospital in Amityville. His third try at rehab.

But now, he wants it.

I went to a family meeting about 10 days in.

There he is. My son, my real son. Thank you, thank you and thank you.

He was enrolled in a 28-day program. He went to Mainstream House in Riverhead, a sober house. We do family things together again. We shop, we go to lunch, dinner. He wanted to be around us again. I haven’t had this in years. We laugh, we cry.

He got kicked out of sober living for having Ambien, a prescription drug, because he had a hard time sleeping. I let him back home. Kevin has a new job, a new girlfriend. He seems happy.

I didn’t go to the classes I should have. I didn’t learn that someone new to recovery does not want their past thrown at them. One day at a time is their mantra. Yesterday is the past. He’s going to his meetings on a regular basis, but now that he is working, that starts to not be as often. Anything that goes missing I automatically accuse him. He wants a new phone because his is old and cracked. I bought him a new one and he “lost” it. I still tell him that if he didn’t sell it he would have it. He tells me he is working an honest program and that he has told me everything — including that he did not sell the phone. I apologize and tell him I am proud of him.

Kevin is working for a company which does party rentals.

One Sunday, in September 2012, he came home looking tired. He was thrilled that they gave him a $100 tip. They even gave him the leftover cake, which we of course ate together.

We spoke of the cotton candy on his sneakers, because he worked the cotton candy machine.

He thought it was fun.

The next day, his sister found him dead in bed. It was an accidental overdose.

They say money is a trigger.

I will never know what led him back. I know now I didn’t cause it. I couldn’t control it and I couldn’t cure it. I prepared myself that this day could come, but I thought he was in the clear. Our very last conversation was about cotton candy, one of the things I craved most when I was pregnant with him.

I still have the cotton-candy-covered shoe laces. I miss him every day. I still struggle with not doing the things I now know I should have done, and I try to teach people every day to not make the same mistakes I did. Learn from me please. Let me tell you anything and everything that may help you or your loved one.

It helps me to help you.

I just went to a celebration meeting of one of his best friends celebrating one year of sobriety on Sunday, and he said, “I think he may have died so I can live.”

Ward Melville fencer earns international acclaim

By Desirée Keegan desiree@tbrnewspapers.com Ward Melville fencer Danny Solomon had to overcome a familiar foe to reach new heights — New Jersey’s Mitchell Saron.

The two faced off on the strip six times prior to the Konin Cadet World Cup in Poland Sept. 25, but Solomon’s record against his opponent was 0-6.

“For the past five or six tournaments we ran into each other — it’s been a major roadblock for me whenever I come up to him,” the saberist said. “I always cracked under pressure, but this time I knew if I stayed calm, that he’d crack this time.”

Solomon was riding a high that day prior to facing off with is archrival. He tied for first with another American from Colorado at the end of the qualifying round the day before, and cruised past Russian and Polish opponents 15-3, 15-9, 15-8 and 15-3 in the four direct elimination rounds prior to the bout against Saron.

“No one could really touch me,” Solomon said.

He beat Saron 15-13, and finished the day with one final bout, which he won for gold, earning him a No. 1 international ranking in cadet.

“I was ecstatic,” Solomon said of getting past Saron. “I’ve been going to international tournaments for the past three years now and each year I’ve been improving and seeing the older kids doing well. This year, with me being the oldest kid in the category, I wanted to make my mark, and I’ve been training hard for a long time now. It’s good to reap the benefits of my hard work with my victory.”

Solomon has been training with Jeff Salmon of Mission Fencing Center in Rocky Point for five years. Salmon is also his high school fencing coach.

“Danny is an extremely good competitor,” Salmon said. “He takes coaching and direction well. He’s eager to be the best he could be.”

Salmon has worked with plenty of highranking fencers, but said he’s never had a gold individual at the world cup level.

“He was extremely focused the whole tournament — from beginning to end,” the coach said of his pupil. “He had his goal in mind and he was doing everything he could to put himself in the best particular place possible, without exception.”

The tournament featured 167 fencers from 16 different countries. Although Solomon has been fencing since sixth grade, he is always seeking to improve. He said intense training went into preparing for the world cup bouts. Salmon said he and his student added several new techniques, and he was happy to see his fencer’s hard work come to fruition.

“You could see the pride,” Salmon said.

“He couldn’t wipe the smile off his face, and he deserved it.”

Solomon is still ranked No. 1 in America, “He’s really helped me grow, not just as an athlete, but as a person,” he said. and is third internationally. Donald Trump has received a lot of backlash for private comments he made in 2005 regarding his boastful treatment of women.

The right to be offended As an editorial staff, we have an opinion. …

The first half of that sentence isn’t necessary in order to reveal what we think. And that is the exact problem we have had with this past weekend’s news cycle.

Political leader after political leader came out this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday to condemn Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s leaked comments, bragging about being able to commit sexual assault against women.

One of the common themes from legislators who pulled their endorsements was “As a father of daughters” or “As a brother with sisters — or a mother,” they were offended.

Two problems here: You don’t need to be a “someone” in order to be offended, you can simply be offended. And why is it that women are repeatedly being referred to as a sister, a daughter or a mother?

A presidential candidate talked about how he can sexually assault women because he is a star. A woman doesn’t need to be anything to be offended, threatened or violated by that sentiment.

A man is also not disqualified from finding Trump’s comments reprehensible simply because he is a man.

Women don’t need to give birth or have a brother before they can be victimized by Trump’s words. Men don’t need to be married to condemn sexual assault. It should not matter your role, your background or your stature — no one should need to back up or justify why they are against sexual assault. They just should be.

I was horrified to learn that Wildlife Services, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is given millions of dollars of taxpayer money to conduct programs that decimate populations of wildlife — more than $3.2 million last year.

I cannot help but compare this to the senseless slaughter of mute swans in New York State as proposed by our Department of Environmental Conservation.

Wildlife Services shoot and poison species of animals in response to vicious and prejudiced views of people who view these animals as “predators.”

And it’s not just the gray wolf, which was virtually eradicated from 48 states by the mid 20th century — but prairie dogs (20,777), red-winged blackbirds (708,487), European starlings

(1,290,815), double-crested cormorants (16,652), and mourning doves (16,907).

Even when the agency’s own studies debunk the views of earlier ones, they still use the misinformation to continue the killings.

Mute swans have been targeted for being an invasive species, even though they’ve been here for a more than a hundred years. There is scant scientific proof that they offer any threat to man or beast.

It is worth noting that many species brought here from Europe are fully acclimated and even welcome — honeybees, for example.

Here in New York State, Gov. Cuomo has the ability to stop the slaughter of our mute swans.

After the DEC proposal to eradicate this species was met by al-

most universal horror, the state assembly and senate proposed a moratorium until further scientific studies could be done.

Bills passed overwhelmingly in a bipartisan effort.

The DEC responded by limiting the killings to 1,400 of our 2,200 swans (yes, that’s how many we’re talking about), crippling the rest so they cannot fly, and shaking their eggs so they cannot reproduce.

Is this what we want done to our beloved swans at the Frank Melville Park? At the Stony Brook Mill Pond?

Gov. Cuomo has already had two opportunities to sign this bill and has not done so. What are you waiting for, governor?

Can you explain your Trump vote to your kids?

Pretty sure — both sides can agree that Trump’s son isn’t the only 10-year-old computer wiz.

Presuming — we are also in agreement that nobody is shocked any more as to what our children have access to on the internet.

Whether you have or have not discussed politics with your children, even leaving out “ the gory parts,” they have found all they need to see and hear online about the candidates.

Which leads me to wonder … what are the reasons parents are giving their children as to why they are voting for Trump?

Take away all the political mumbo-jumbo that children, and some teens, may not comprehend, and you are left with the news that children are really interested in: the shock and awe, the yelling, the threatening, the making fun of, the what-is-hegoing-to do next? The promise of

a dramatic change. The macho, Rambo rhetoric.

Children see and hear him, weekly, calling women pigs and rating them on a scale of 1 to 10; calling minorities rapists and terrorists; demeaning other minorities by stating that they live in “hell holes” and keep “shooting each other.” They hear Trump putting the almighty fear into Trump believers — and then your children witness the believers at their rallies, spewing their nonsense.

So I am wondering a few things. When your daughter’s boyfriend calls her a pig or claims she’s not a 10 because her breasts aren’t big enough — does your parental vote for Trump say that’s acceptable behavior? Your daughter may think it does. She knows you heard Trump say it, and you support him.

When your son gets hit with a lawsuit due to not paying his fair share of taxes or for sexual miscon-

duct — does your parental vote for Trump make that “part of business?” Your son may think it does.

He knows Trump got away with both, and you support Trump.

When your child bullies a person of a different religion they aren’t comfortable with, or with disabilities — does your parental Trump vote make that okay too?

They will think so; they saw your candidate do it and say it. Again, with your support.

When your daughter’s boss states that she will never make as much money as your son, does your parental Trump vote tell her to just live with it? She may think so, because Trump thinks so, and you support him.

One more question: Is this really the “dramatic change” you want for your children?

here can we turn when the dialogue from, or about, our presidents seems to fall short?

Fortunately, we can look to the imperfect presidents of the past, whose ideas and inspiration have, for years, proved much more than “just words,” and whose notions about who — and what — we can or should be has helped provide a compass for the country.

James Garfield might be a good place to start: “We can not overestimate the fervent love of

Garfield also proferred, “If wrinkles

must be written on our brow, let them not be written on our heart. The spirit should never grow old.”

Thomas Jefferson suggested a way to deal with growing personal frustration: “When angry, count 10, before you speak; if very angry, a hundred.”

How about a few words from Rutherford B. Hayes who said, “He serves his party best who serves the country best.”

Martin Van Buren advised, “It’s easier to do a job right, than to explain why you didn’t.”

How about a quote from Honest Abe? “My dream,” Lincoln said, “is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last, best hope on Earth.”

Or this one: “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”

Here’s another Lincoln quote: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.”

Turning to the other side of the Civil War conflict that threatened to tear the nation apart, Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general, said, “I tremble for my country when I hear of confidence expressed in me. I know too well my weakness, that our only hope is in God.” John Quincy Adams’ inspirational suggestion was, “Try and fail, but don’t fail to try.”

Chester A. Arthur said, “Men may die, but the fabrics of our free institutions remain unshaken.”

Harry S. Truman indicated, “No government is perfect. One of the chief virtues of a democracy, however, is that its defects are always visible and under democratic processes can be pointed out and corrected.”

Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking … is freedom.”

Describing a country whose ancestors came from so many other nations, Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “Remember, remember always, that all of us,

and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.”

FDR’s cousin Theodore Roosevelt said, “Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” Teddy also suggested, “Courtesy is as much a mark of a gentleman as courage.”

John F. Kennedy, who saw his fair share of crises during a presidency cut short, said, “The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word ‘crisis.’

One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger — but recognize the opportunity.”

John Tyler offered these amusing and humbling words: “Here lies the body of my good horse, The General.

For 20 years he bore me around the circuit of my practice, and in all that time he never made a blunder. Would that his master could say the same.”

William Howard Taft pointedly said, “Politics, when I am in it, makes me sick.”

An Eisenhower quote might be a fitting way to end: “America is best described by one word, freedom.”

Britain’s Baroness Jay brings warning of threat to democracy

baroness and former leader of the British House of Lords, Margaret Jay, came to Stony Brook University to speak to us about “The new populism in America and Britain: What has happened to our politics?”

The talk, which was open to the public and well attended, drew parallels between Trumpism and the Brexit movement in Britain and served as one way to understand our preBy Leah S. Dunaief election frenzy.

Populism, as a political ideology, views virtuous citizens as mistreated by small circles of elites to be overthrown.

In Britain, where jobs are drying up and wages have been stagnant for those 31-59 years of age for decades, migrants have been pouring into the country — some 330,000 in the last year, looking for jobs and a good life.

Between you and me

Citizens are angry. The landscape has changed and a common cry is, “I don’t recognize the town I grew up in,” as a result of the changes. As a member of the European Union, Britain had open borders for laborers throughout the 28-member countries even as British workers could in turn move anywhere within the EU from Britain.

Baroness Jay of Paddington, daughter of former Prime Minister James Callaghan, told us that there are four times as many Brits collecting unemployment insurance in Germany as there are Germans collecting unemployment in Britain. Nonetheless, the “elites” and the politicians are seen by the British middle class as being unresponsive and only self-serving, and there is a deep sense of insecurity in the country. In such an environment, the message, “Support Brexit to take back control,” resonates and sounds not dissimilar to “Make America great again.” These slogans would seem to pit the common people against the top 1 percent.

Leaders of populist movements have certain characteristics in common, as the baroness pointed out.

They tend to be blunt to the point

of crude. The media loves them for their irresistible sound bites and the attention they draw from the public, and offers them a platform. Interestingly in this comparison of Britain and the United States, those who would speak “for the people” are not actually “of the people.” They feel none of the economic insecurities but seek to identify with the millions of citizens.

That is certainly the case with “billionaire” Trump and also the leaders of the Brexit campaign, who are from the upper classes.

Populism is spreading in Europe.

Will it spread here? That is the question Margaret Jay poses for us.

For the United Kingdom, there are other serious issues. Will the four parts of the country stay together?

Scotland and Northern Ireland resoundingly voted to stay in the EU, while Wales and England voted to leave. Also there is what the baroness described as an “unpleasant divide” between foreign workers, who are increasingly viewed as taking away jobs, benefits and even lifestyle, and the citizens. The Brexit vote seems to have given legitimacy to the antagonisms. Then there are the matters of

making separate trade agreements with 27 other countries, and the pound sterling exchange rate.

Meanwhile what has Brexit done to the rest of the EU? Other countries, with similar movements, are stirring.

There is even the thought that the Brexit vote may have caused matters to improve elsewhere, as politicians heed the message sent by the voters.

The solution, proposed by Baroness Jay, lies in rebuilding the center. We must not become fortresses of isolation, she warns, either in trade or of xenophobia. Pluralism and diversity are the way of the future, and in the U.S. these ideas are baked into our democracy. To rebuild the center involves a role for education. Tellingly some 75 percent of the more educated in Britain voted to stay in the EU, while about the same number, 75 percent of the less educated, voted to leave. The latter are those for whom the present system is not working. And while this picture of current politics, is specific to Britain at the moment, the dark and unpleasant nature of this past Sunday’s presidential debate here would urge us to pay further attention to the people whose needs are not being met.
