The Three Village area’s approval was overwhelming.

The residents of the school district voted in favor of the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library’s $5,235,398 budget for 2018, with 503 “yes” votes to 75 “no.”

With the budget $36,037 more than 2017, the tax levy will increase by 0.69 percent.

“Thank you to the Three Village community for your overwhelming support of Emma S. Clark Memorial Library,” president of the library board of trustees Linda Josephs said. “The library board and staff will continue to strive to provide the highest quality library services at the lowest possible cost to taxpayers.”

Ted Gutmann, library director, said future projects include renovation of the lower level public restrooms, and the possibility of a small café that would serve coffee and light snacks. The proposed refreshment area would include seating.

He said the library staff also looks forward to the continuation of classes and one-on-one help with technology. Among other services Emma Clark provides are volunteer opportunities for teens, resources for parents, and programs for infants, toddlers and school-aged children, including a summer reading program that brings in thousands of kids each year. Every other week a bus is available for senior residents who cannot drive, providing them with transportation to the library to socialize and participate in programs. The library’s Homebound Service delivers books and other materials to those who are unable to visit the library.

Setauket church members help hurricane victims

By Rita J. Egan rita@tbrnewspapers.com Members of a Setauket church are doing their part to help strangers more than 1,500 miles away.

After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico Sept. 20 and left the majority of the more than 3.4 million residents without electricity and no easy access to food and supplies, Linda Obernauer, a church elder of Setauket Presbyterian Church, said she knew something had to be done.

Obernauer, chair of the church’s Peace and Justice Committee, began working

with the Central Islip-based Teatro Yerbabruja to collect donations for the victims.

The theater company is a grassroots organization that strives to inspire social changes through community, art and education.

The church elder said at first friends brought donations to her home before she set up a drop-off location at Setauket Presbyterian Church. The church is collecting ready-to-eat foods, instant coffee, baby wipes, adhesive bandages and powdered milk. Obernauer said the organization has plenty of diapers and bottled water.

She said the church is deeply involved in community outreach, especially in Port Jefferson Station with their furniture bank Open Door Exchange, and recently she has met many people whose families have been affected by the hurricane and the recent earthquake in Mexico. Obernauer said she feels collections such as this one are what the congregation’s faith calls them to do.

“This is all interconnected on how we honor our neighbors when they are in need,” she said.

Obernauer said she has already transported a pickup truck filled with donations to the Central Islip organization and plans on driving another truckload this week.

She said she isn’t surprised by the congregation’s generosity, as they are always quick to donate.

“I think it’s a really good community effort,” she said. “When people reach out, they are getting heard and people are helping.”

Teatro Yerbabruja’s director Margarita Espada said the nonprofit will send donations via private freight. She said the theater is currently collaborating with Suffolk County Community College and working with a few organizations in Puerto Rico that are trying to get supplies to small towns, which have been difficult to reach due to debris in the roads. Another obstacle during the first week was the Jones Act, which President Donald Trump (R) temporarily lifted Sept. 28. The act requires all goods shipped between U.S. ports to be

shipped by U.S. vessels and for them to be primarily operated by Americans.

Espada said she has worked on outreach projects with Obernauer in the past, and she’s grateful for her and the church members’ help.

“I think it’s great because they are showing support for Puerto Rico,” she said.

Obernauer said items can be dropped off at the church office until Oct. 10 between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Setauket Presbyterian Church is located at 5 Caroline Ave., Setauket.

Acompora, the lead sponsor from the Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation, has been instrumental in National AED legislation, education and SCA prevention.

Mother inspires others to be politically active

By Rita J. Egan rita@tbrnewspapers.com The 2016 presidential election campaign motivated a South Setauket mother of two young children to become more politically active and teach others how to do the same.

Shoshana Hershkowitz, a registered Democrat who considers herself a Progressive, has become a familiar face at local political rallies while balancing motherhood and teaching. In January she founded the Facebook group Suffolk Progressives — a page with nearly 1,000 followers — in order to engage others in political conversations and educate them on how to become more active in government. The page includes discussions and videos viewable to those interested in learning what they can do to become more civically engaged, even if they’re busy.

Hershkowitz, a lecturer at Stony Brook University and conductor of the Stony Brook Chorale, said she credits her Israeli parents for her passion. She said her family was able to discuss politics, even with those who disagreed with them, without the discussions leading to arguments.

“I grew up at the dinner table talking about [politics] so that is something I always felt comfortable with and something we’re supposed to do,” she said.

Before her children were born, she volunteered for Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign, and knocked on doors, including in Pennsylvania, encouraging others to vote for him. After she gave birth to her oldest child, she said she didn’t have as much time to be as entrenched in politics as she would have liked. With the little time she had, she campaigned for local candidates

and occasionally wrote a political blog, called Jew Kids on the Block.

“This election kind of re-galvanized me, I think which is true of so many people, and then it just kind of took off from there,” Hershkowitz said. “It started as a coping mechanism for me, and then it just sort of turned into what I thought would be an interesting opportunity to teach other people how to engage in political activism in a way that fits their lifestyle.”

She said when she was first trying to figure out how to make her voice heard, she started making calls to local members of congress including U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley). Zeldin has referred to the people who stake out his Patchogue office as “liberal obstructionists” in the past.

“I can make a difference at home in my pajamas,” she said.

Hershkowitz said she is also a big believer in writing letters to newspapers, something she had been — Cindy Morris doing before President Donald Trump (R) ran for office. She even helped to conduct a workshop about writing letters at U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi’s (D-Glen Cove) office.

“Now I realize that it’s a really important vehicle,” she said. “It changes the narrative in your community in a way that I think social media doesn’t. You can certainly talk to people you agree or disagree with on social media, but I still think that the newspaper has an outreach that social media does not at this point.”

She said she began taking her children to rallies during the last year, which has enabled her to become even more active on the local political scene. Her children have

joined her at the January Women’s March on Washington in Port Jefferson Station, the March for Science at Stony Brook University and protests in front of Zeldin’s office.

Hershkowitz said she makes sure a rally will be a peaceful and safe one before bringing her children. She said she didn’t take them to a vigil in Port Jefferson the day after the Charlottesville protests, because she said she didn’t have the words to explain to them what happened in Virginia. She said she also limits their exposure to broadcast news.

“They see me call congress, they see me do all these things, and I will explain why I’m doing it, but I try to make sure their consumption of media is really limited in this time,” she said. “It’s hard to contextualize that for such young kids.”

Hershkowitz said the Suffolk Progressives Facebook page began as like-minded friends sharing thoughts on various topics. Among those friends is Stefanie Werner, who she met last year at a child’s birthday party.

“As someone who is also a strong supporter of progressivism and democratic values, it was amazing to form an instant kinship with a person who held the same beliefs and desires for change,” Werner said. “Shoshana is a powerhouse of energy and exuberance, resolving to revolutionize our political process and those who represent us.”

Cindy Morris, the Democratic candidate for Brookhaven Town Clerk, met Hershkowitz at a Democratic committee event for activists. Morris said Hershkowitz has made the grassroots efforts available to people with all levels of experience with her work that goes beyond marches and rallies. One example is Hershkowitz posting a video on Facebook explaining how to call local legislators and strategies once they’re on the phone.

“She has made politics less intimidating and more inspiring, galvanizing and easier to participate in than ever before,” Morris said.

Hershkowitz also has met many local

lawmakers in her travels, including Port Jefferson Village Mayor Margot Garant.

The mayor described Hershkowitz as a spitfire “who is finding her voice during a time when others are afraid to speak up.”

Garant said the activist is persistent, yet never demeaning, when she speaks with others, even if their opinions differ.

“She’s exemplary on how we all need to be with one another, “ Garant said.

Hershkowitz said her mission is to continue encouraging others to speak up.

“I hope that people realize that this isn’t someone else’s work, this is all of our work, and it can be just a couple of phone calls every day and making that a ritual like brushing your teeth is enough,” she said.

“Don’t wait for someone else to do that work right now.”

Police Blotter

Incidents and arrests Sept. 27–Oct. 1 Battling with police

A 50-year-old man from Port Jefferson was drinking alcohol from an open container while near the intersection of Main Street and Wynn Lane in Port Jefferson at about 4 p.m. Sept. 27 when he was approached by a village constable, according to police. When approached by the constable, the man grabbed her arm, swung her around and punched her, police said.

Two other bystanders attempted to subdue the accused man, who swung his elbows repeatedly, causing a laceration to the lower lip of one of the bystanders and hitting the shoulder and neck of the other, police said. Once he was arrested, police said he was screaming obscenities at the officers. He was arrested and charged with four counts of second-degree harassment, disorderly conduct and obstruction of governmental administration.

Little by little

At a home on North Ridge Road in Old Field between March 15 and Sept. 20, a 38-year-old woman from East Setauket stole jewelry, silverware and other personal items, according to police. She was arrested Sept. 28 in Selden and charged with third-degree grand larceny.

Snail mail

Someone stole a mailbox and post from in front of a home on Dogwood Road in Port Jefferson at about 12:30 p.m. Oct. 1, according to police.

Shattered glass

At about 3 a.m. Sept. 28, a 29-year-old woman from Wading River shattered the front and rear windshields of a 2000 Saturn parked outside of a home on Highview Drive in Selden, according to police. She was arrested and charged with criminal mischief.

Return scheme

A 34-year-old woman from Nesconset found a cash register receipt for five boxes of baby formula in the parking lot of Walmart on Nesconset Highway in Setauket at about 11:30 a.m. Sept. 28, entered the store, took five boxes of the same item off the shelf, placed them in a shopping cart and proceeded to customer service to return the items for cash, according to police. She was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Green beach

At about 1:30 a.m. Sept. 27, a 24-year-old woman from Stony Brook was seated in a parked 2007 Jeep with a “strong odor of marijuana” while at Cedar Town Beach on Harbor Beach Road in Mount Sinai, according to police. She was given a field appearance ticket.

LIRR property stolen

A North Face backpack containing Long Island Rail Road access keys, security keys and train ignition keys was stolen from a Nissan parked outside of a home on Dorothy Street in Port Jefferson Station at about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 1, according to police.

Pharmacy theft

Medicine was stolen from CVS Pharmacy on Route 25A in Setauket at about 12:30 p.m. Sept. 30, according to police.

Rite Aid robbery

At about 1 p.m. Sept. 30, a 31-year-old man from Coram entered Rite Aid on Old Town Road in Selden and demanded cash from an employee and displayed a gun, according to police. The man fled the scene without any money, police said. He was arrested Sept. 30 at about 9 p.m. in Selden and charged with first-degree robbery and two counts of second-degree robbery.

Brookhaven Town plans to spend $294.1 million in the 2018 fiscal year, about a $12 million increase compared to 2017’s budget, though the town won’t need much help from the public to do so.

Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) presented his tentative operating budget for 2018 to the public during a meeting Sept. 28. Romaine referred to the plan as a “taxpayers’ budget.”

“My job is to bring in the most cost effective budget, and that’s what we think we’ve done here,” Romaine said, thanking the town’s finance department commissioner Tamara Wright and chief of operations Matt Miner for their work in presenting a balanced budget. He also lauded the town’s AAA bond rating as a valuable asset in putting together a spending plan.

“We have a structurally balanced budget for the last few years and we have wound up each of the last few years with a surplus, which kind of distinguishes us in terms of our fiscal soundness,” Romaine said.

The increase, when compared to the 2017 fiscal year, can be attributed in large part to the disbanding of the formerly incorporated Mastic Beach Village, which means some services provided to residents of the village will again become Brookhaven’s responsibility. In addition, health insurance costs for town employees are expected to increase by 10 percent in 2018, and contractually mandated raises will go up by about $1.7 million. The town’s debt requirements will be about 5 percent higher in 2018. Despite the increases, if passed, the spending plan would maintain all services provided to residents during 2017, though no new programs would be funded, according to Romaine. Less than $2 million in reserve funds were needed to balance the budget, compared to about $3.5 million in 2017.

A typical Brookhaven Town resident living outside of an incorporated village should expect to see an increase of about $11 in their town property taxes in 2018 from the town’s general funds, excluding special districts such as sewer and high-

Ward Melville brings robots to the classroom

In attendance at the most recent Three Village school board meeting was a student-built robot and some of the Ward Melville High School students who built it.

What began as an extracurricular offering in 2005, has evolved into a yearlong, honors robotics course at the high school.

The Ward Melville Iron Patriots — robotics students and teachers Steve Rogers, John Williams and Mark Suesser — presented their work to the school board after the course’s inaugural year.

Rogers said students in the robotics class built two robots. The first is a generic one built from a kit and programmed to

complete various tasks. The second robot is one that students design and build from scratch to solve a specific problem.

Last spring the Iron Patriots took part in the FIRST Robotics Competition at Hofstra University, where they competed against 55 other teams from Long Island and around the world. With a 13th place overall finish, the Ward Melville team brought home the highest rookie seed award for having the highest ranking of a first-year team. The district’s young engineers are no strangers to competition; the club team won the regional Botball championships in 2014 and 2015.

The Botball robot competition requires that the robots pick up ping pong balls, transport them and then hit a target. For the FIRST Robotics Competition, which Rogers calls “a football game on steroids,” larger robots have to complete even more specialized tasks. Designed and built from scratch in six weeks, these 150-pound robot contestants must pick up gears and place them on propellers, among other challenges.

In addition to the work of building and programming the robots, members of the team also work on fundraising and build websites to get the word out about their project. They also take part in community outreach visits to elementary schools to introduce students to robotics and to local organizations such as the Disabled American Veterans.

Noor Kamal, a student with an interest in math and computer science, said she went into the class not having much building experience.

“Those six weeks every single day after school designing the robot from scratch and building it exposed me to all these different things I want to do in the future,” she said.

Rogers said with the expanded role that robots will have in the future, “Our work force now has to retool to train to be able to run the robots and program the robots.”

Romaine eyes another term in Brookhaven

On the side, he took a job at Dowling College teaching managerial economics for seven years, then moved over to teaching history courses at Suffolk County Community College for another seven before landing at Stony Brook University teaching administrative law at the graduate level in 2005 — the same year he was elected again as county legislator of the 1st Legislative District.

When he was eventually approached by Jesse Garcia, chairman of the Brookhaven Town Republican Committee, to throw his hat into the ring for supervisor, Romaine hesitated. He said he loved his job as legislator too much.

“I didn’t want to do it,” Romaine recalled.

But it was the memory of his late son, former Brookhaven Councilman Keith Romaine, who died in 2009 from pneumonia-related conditions at age 36, that finally convinced him to pursue the position. “I knew if he had lived, he would have been supervisor. Unfortunately, while it’s usually sons that follow fathers, I did it in reverse.”

He said such personal lows in his life have helped inform how he approaches the position.

“The bottom line is, it’s a very short life,” he said. “I didn’t get into politics to call people names. I got into politics to get something done. This job has a lot of frustrations and I’ll be happy when I leave it, but I’m doing my time here because I still have a sense of purpose.”

Garcia said he’s glad Romaine accepted the job when he did.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. Of the thousands of students who auditioned, 25 Ward Melville High School studentmusicians have been selected to perform at this year’s New York State School Music Association All-State Music Conference. Several of the students were selected to more than one ensemble group and with 25 honorees, Ward Melville has the largest number of students selected for this honor in all of Suffolk County.

Selection into these festivals is based on the students’ NYSSMA scores from the previous spring, as well as teacher recommendations.

Geoffrey Brian Watson of Setauket died Sept.

28 just four days before his 56th birthday. He was the much-loved son of Walter and Norma Watson.

He was preceded in death by his wife Julia Weksel Watson.

Geoff graduated from Ward Melville High School and SUNY New Paltz and had begun a career in business before resigning to care for his wife in the last 18 months of her tooshort life. That experience led him to a career as a caregiver, and he worked for many years at Maryhaven Center of Hope and later as a certified nursing assistant.

He had a life-long interest in sports and excelled in baseball, skiing and golf. Geoff loved football and was an avid Giants fan — if you

were anywhere in his house during a game, you always knew how the Giants were doing.

Geoff is survived by his sister Joanna Watson, his parents, in-laws, aunts, uncle, cousins and their spouses.

A memorial gathering will be held Monday, Oct. 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Bates House in Frank Melville Memorial Park, Setauket.

Anna Maria Bonanno

Anna Maria Bonanno, 90, died Aug. 12.

The Stony Brook resident was born in Italy and was a caseworker with the Department of Social Services in Bay Shore.

She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas; devoted mother of Diane; cherished grandmother of Antonio; and daughter of the late Vincenzo and Vincenza.

Services were held at Moloney’s Port Jefferson Station Funeral Home with a funeral Mass at Infant Jesus R.C. Church. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Stony Brook 5K race has soul

On Oct. 1 more than 150 runners and walkers took to the streets of Stony Brook to participate in the Soles for All Souls 5K Race/2K Walk. Organized by All Souls Episcopal Church in Stony Brook, the morning included live entertainment by local band Down Port, pre-race stretches led by Inspired of Port Jefferson, raffles and a ceremony where awards were presented by age group.

Brendan Roller of Melville was the first to cross the finishing line in 18 minutes, 46 seconds, and East Setauket’s Leana Wiebelt was the first female to complete the race in a time of 20:39. East Setauket resident John Barker, the only participant in the 80 and older category, finished the race in 48:20.

SportS Patriots get payback snapping PJ boys golf streak

By Bill landon Two years ago, Port Jefferson’s boys golf team handed Ward Melville a loss that broke a 88-match win streak. The Patriots returned that favor at Port Jefferson Country Club Oct. 3, winning the round by a single stroke to snap the Royals’ undefeated streak this season.

Port Jefferson junior Shane DeVincenzo, a two-time All-County and All-State golfer, came in at one over par in the first wave. Although it wasn’t his best round, shooting a 34, he was pleased with his result.

“My personal best on this course for nine holes is a 32,” DeVincenzo said. “I think it takes confidence more than anything — you go into these matches saying you’re going to win and [that] helps you believe it. If you go into it thinking you might not win, it’s going to be a lot closer.”

The match was a lot closer than it was the first time the two teams met, and that didn’t surprise Port Jefferson head coach Chuck Ruoff.

“It was a competitive match — it came down to three strokes, and Shane shot an incredible round that carried us,” Ruoff said of the Suffolk County runner-up from last season. “He’s unbelievable. For the remaining matches, if we go out and play the way we’re capable of, I think we’ll end up with the result we want.”

The Patriots may be a young team, with just one senior on the roster, but Ward Melville’s underclassmen were right behind the rest of the pack, like sophomore Palmer Van Tuyl, who shot a 41.

“I hit a bunch of good shots, but Shane DeVincenzo is a tremendous golfer,” Van Tuyl said. “He started off with a few medium-length par putts, so I was down early.

And toward the middle of the round I had a couple of ups and downs for par.”

ball contact. He shot 40, edging his opponent by two strokes, but has done better than his plus four performance on his home course.

“My best is a 34, so today I was pretty good around the greens and scrambling, but my ball striking wasn’t the best,” he said. “Normally around the greens is one of the strongest parts of my game, but I need to work on consistency with my iron play.”

Ward Melville head coach Bob Spira said the narrow win was especially gratifying for him after losing to the Royals earlier in the season.

“We practice chipping and putting — the short game is really important,” Spira said of his team’s many workouts at St. George’s Golf and Country Club, the Patriots’ home course. “The kids golf a lot themselves [outside of the team], and that creates a lot of depth, [despite how] very young we are.”

Ward Melville junior Alexander Korkuc had his short game working for him, but after shooting a 44 left a few strokes out on the green. He looks to improve with four games left in the regular season.

“I thought my chipping and pitching was very good today, but I left a couple of putts short,” he said. “I just misread a couple of putts. As a team we just have to practice harder, work on our drills better and stay positive.”

Ruoff attributes a large part of his team’s success — the Royals went on a 6-0 run to start the season — to the association with Port Jefferson Country Club.

“They love being around the course; the facility provides a lot for them,” Ruoff said.

“They’re able to practice and play, get instruction basically whenever they want, so it’s a very strong relationship.”

With the win, Ward Melville improves to 5-1, but Ruoff said despite the blemish, he sees big things happening for his Royals this season.

“They just want to compete,” he said. “I set them in the right direction, and they’re taking care of the rest.”

Ward Melville’s girls volleyball team invaded William Floyd Oct. 2 and pulled away with a fast and easy 3-0 sweep, 25-4, 25-11, 25-8. It was the Patriots’ fifth sweep of the season. Ward Melville is now 5-2 in League I. Nick Messina had 23 carries for 305 yards and four touchdowns to lead Ward Melville’s football team to a 35-19 win over Commack Sept. 29.

Messina had touchdown runs of 7, 15, 45 and 75 yards, and also had an interception. Quarterback Peyton Capizzi completed seven passes for 73 yards and had a 15-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Liam Davenport. Stephen Torrico had two sacks for the Patriots, which are now 3-2 in League I.

Patriots prove they’re still a threat, the team to beat

Seniors Kerri Thornton and Kate Mulham each scored a goal and tallied one assist to lead the field hockey team to a 3-2 win over Eastport-South Manor Oct. 3.

Mulham said the team’s strategy was no different against the Sharks than it would be for any other opponent. The Patriots got ready as they would for any game.

“We prepared for this game just as we have for every other game,” she said. “We don’t take any competitor lightly and expect a high level of hockey from each and every team in our division. But remaining undefeated is such an amazing feeling — it validates all of the hard work that we have put into this season.”

Ward Melville maintained a 2-1 edge at halftime, with Thornton scoring after a Sharks goal, and junior Elizabeth Wang adding the second goal off a Mulham assist.

“I am super excited to have been a part of this game and victory,” Mulham said.

“My teammates are so talented and make playing well easy.”

Junior Meghan Lorenzen made seven saves to maintain the advantage until time ran out, and the two teams traded goals in the second half.

Ward Melville has not lost a game since Sept. 19, 2015, but Mulham said it doesn’t add any extra pressure.

Educating those in ivory bubbles

Political harmony in dark times This just in: Republicans and Democrats are having a hard time getting along. Having a thorough understanding of that fact, a story that emerged from a Suffolk County Legislature meeting Oct. 3 caught our attention.

According to a spokeswoman from her office, Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket), the 5th district representative who we have covered since she took office in 2011, became ill during the meeting and was taken to the hospital. As of Oct. 4, the spokeswoman said she was feeling much better, and the trip to the hospital was taken “out of an abundance of caution.” Two days before, Hahn ran in the Soles for All Souls 5K Race and completed the run in 26 minutes, 17 seconds.

In any event, we wish her a speedy recovery and hope all is well going forward, and we are not alone in that sentiment.

Each year prior to local elections, TBR News Media hosts political candidates for debates to allow them ample time to lay out their platforms and constructively discuss important local issues. Democrats and Republicans sit down and discuss the most important aspects of everyday life for our neighbors. At the end of the discussion, our editorial board reaches a consensus on which candidate we would like to endorse. The issue comes out the Thursday before Election Day each year. This year will be no different.

Hahn and her opponent, Republican Edward Flood, are currently scheduled to make an appearance this Friday, Oct. 6. On the morning of Oct. 4, Flood called our main office, having also heard of what took place at the Legislature meeting, and offered to reschedule the debate should Hahn need more time to recover.

We have not decided whom we will endorse in this race — Hahn is an exemplary advocate for our community who has served as the majority leader in the Legislature and has headed up several committees — but we would like to take this opportunity to commend Flood for reaching across party lines to put a fellow human’s wellbeing above politics.

To our local politicians, keep up the good, bipartisan work, and continue to remain above the divisive political fray.

In response to the letter titled “Cantwell is not indicative of Stony Brook” in the Sept.

21 edition of The Village Times Herald I feel it necessary to again educate those members of the community who choose to live in their ivory bubble, ignoring the current state of affairs in our country.

Articles and letters written in response to the Charlottesville tragedy were meant to bring attention to the fact that history is repeating once again. Racial bias exists everywhere, in everyday circumstances, on everyday streets in every community.

Crosses may not be burning on front lawns and lynchings may not be commonplace, but these people are still in plain view,

George Altemose is extremely defensive towards the very possibility that bigotry could exist in the Three Village area.

He parlays his own experiences with his African-American neighbor and the African-American couple who purchased his home into an ignorant belief that we all just get along and no one ever has a negative thought about someone of a different race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, etc. An open dialogue about the subject is a healthy way of acknowledging it and knowing how to handle it.

A head in the sand mentality is indicative of how racially fueled situations begin and end in violence and irreparable damages to those who chose to believe none of it happened in their backyards.

Watch your language President Trump Publicly excoriating on television certain NFL players who visually expressed strong dissatisfaction with the discriminatory nature of our society, Donald Trump shockingly called them “sons of b…..s.” I do not recall any other president who used such language publicly. What sort of example is Trump making for the younger people of our nation? What effect can the use of such vulgarity have on them, who are instructed by their parents, other family members, teachers, clergy, neighbors, etc., not to express themselves with vulgar language?

Does Trump not understand that since he is president (alas!), many people — especially schoolchildren — will automatically regard him as a role model and may repeat the words and actions that he rashly employs? If a schoolteacher were to use words like “sons of

b…..s” publicly, demands would surely and understandably be made for his or her removal from the classroom.

I do not recall hearing any president in my lifetime, from Franklin Delano Roosevelt onward, publicly employing such vulgar terminology. At another level, Trump’s verbal missiles aimed at Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s appalling leader, again demonstrates Trump’s lack of understanding of the possible consequences of the use of undiplomatic speech. While almost all of us are justifiably angered and deeply concerned by the repellent behavior of Kim Jong-un, surely we recognize that Donald Trump should not antagonize him publicly or privately with crude or mocking remarks.

Doing so can only increase Kim Jong-un’s maniacal belligerence.

People occupying various official positions everywhere in

our country and elsewhere must watch their words, a necessary requirement for those whose positions automatically make them models for imitation, especially the young. President Obama, incidentally, struck me as an outstanding example of controlled speech, despite his having been frequently and publicly goaded by public figures with vile words.

I would like to emphatically say to Donald Trump, our rather thoughtless and frighteningly impetuous president, that when addressing the leaders of antagonistic nations, he must remind himself to heed the famed and sound advice of President Theodore Roosevelt: “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”

And when he speaks about our fellow American citizens, he must learn to do so with respect and with courtesy.

An open letter to the NFL Dear Commissioner Goodell: As one of many football fans who is extremely upset by political acts disrespecting our flag and national anthem, I seriously ask you to consider putting a stop to this behavior.

If players have the right to political demonstrations on the field, then fans have the right to protest against them. Do you really want NFL games to turn into

political events or possible riots?

You say you want unity, but how can there be unity on the field when millionaire players attack the symbols of American unity?

I realize that you want to placate the NFL Players Association, but without fans there will be no income, salaries or players.

Please stand up for the symbols over which millions of Americans have fought and died.

Just because an act of disrespect is legal does not make it proper or moral. You fine players for disrespectful or improper celebrations — what can be more improper than these ill-thought and divisive acts by so-called professionals?

Please, please. We want football not politics.

If it weren’t for you, we might be living with even more unimaginable tragedies.

For reasons most of us, fortunately, can only imagine at a distance, people are tormented by destructive urges.

When these moments arise, hopefully, a psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor or someone in a position to recognize the signs can step in and offer support, while redirecting that person toward a

to school, we clap at the end of their concerts and we feed them their meals before sending them to bed for the night.

When I was in junior high school, I read books such as “Lord of the Flies” and “The Crucible,” which my teacher Mrs. Wickle suggested were an important way to look at the “dark side” of the heart.

At the time, I found the subjects depressing and unnecessary. Why, I thought, did I have to read about such violence or mass hysteria.

In the modern world, we are in the crosshairs of everything from overseas terrorists to storms and earthquakes and, yes, to people without an apparent ideology whose final act before they take their own lives is to commit mass murder.

We look at the faces of the victims and feel the loss of those we never met.

They look like our friends and neighbors, and we know their smiles, once filled with potential, will never again light up a room.

At the same time, hundreds of people lined up for hours to do what they could — give blood — to help save those in immediate need.

Clearly, a few people in our midst have headed toward the dark side of their hearts and minds, allowing the demons that plague their lives to release the unthinkable and unimaginable.

Maybe, in addition to the discussion about gun control, we ought to appreciate the legion of mental health professionals who dedicate themselves to helping those battling against destructive urges, whose thoughts wander into the wilderness of despair.

The toll their work often takes on some of these mental health helpers is enormous, as other people’s nightmares leap from the minds of their patients into their own subconscious. The flow of information travels both ways, putting psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers at risk.

These mental health workers often talk to others in their field to help them get through the difficulties of their jobs.

They listen, they encourage, they become involved and, ultimately, they can and so often do set people on better courses in their lives, helping them feel better and live better.

By the time you read this, perhaps we’ll have an idea of what triggered the madness from this latest gunman, and maybe it will have less to do with offthe-rails thinking than with an ideology that encourages mass violence.

If it wasn’t lone-wolf insanity, but, rather, someone following instructions, we ought to find the ones who encouraged these senseless and brutal murders.

Either way, we ought to dedicate more resources to battling with the burden of a broken brain. If, somehow, a mental health professional can redirect someone who might otherwise commit incomprehensible violence, that person not only has saved a life but may have turned a would-be murderer into another conscientious citizen lining up for hours to give blood instead of planning to spill it.

Music can soothe the soul in troubled times

n the last few weeks we have been subjected to a constant bombardment of tragic news. The horrific mass killings in Las Vegas is just the latest. We have lived through reports of the sequential hurricanes that have killed, maimed and destroyed lives and property in Texas, Florida, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. We have agonized for the men, women and children caught in the Mexican earthquakes.

We ran away from news of the carnage the other night and took refuge in art. The glorious embrace of Giacomo Puccini and his soaring arias of “La Bohème,” at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, welcomed us.

Puccini, you may well know, is considered one of the two most famous Italian opera composers of the 19th century, the other being Giuseppe Verdi. What I didn’t know is that he was the offspring of a musical dynasty in Lucca that included his father and the fathers preceding them as far back as his great-great-grandfather. All of these ancestors studied music at Bologna, wrote music for the church and, aided by their genes and family connections, were distinguished in their time.

Puccini’s first opera, “Le Villi,” premiering in 1884, when he was 26, was well enough received, and his subsequent “Manon Lescaut” was a triumph.

His personal life, however, was as riveting as his librettos. He eloped with his married, former piano student at the risk of being shunned. They did eventually marry, after another husband killed her womanizing husband. By

coincidence, Puccini’s opera premiered the same week as Verdi’s last opera, “Falstaff,” and talk began of Puccini being the natural heir to Verdi. At least that was what George Bernard Shaw is reported to have said.

Puccini’s next three operas are among the most popular and most often produced: “La Bohème,” “Tosca” and “Madama Butterfly.”

When “La Bohème” premiered in Turin in 1896, Arturo Toscanini conducted it, and it was immediately popular. The story is of four young artists, all starving and freezing as they work in a garret in Paris and experience the pleasures and pains of young love. The opera is at turns joyful with the energy of youth and tragic with the premature death from tuberculosis of Mimi, the seamstress, and Rodolfo’s love. As a young man in Milan, Puccini lived the life he wrote about, once sharing a single herring with three others, as portrayed in the opera.

Puccini almost died in a car accident before finishing “Madama Butterfly” but then went on to complete what is now one of the most loved operas in the world. “Tosca” followed; then

“La Fanciulla del West,” a plot set in America; “La Rondine;” and a threeact opera, including “Gianni Schicchi,” which contains my favorite aria, “O mio babbino caro.” “Turandot” was his final opera, finished after his death by his associates from his sketches, and offering the memorable, “Nessun dorma.”

Publicity about his personal life continued when his wife accused their maid of having an affair with Puccini, who was known to wander off the reservation. The maid then committed suicide, and an autopsy revealed that she had died a virgin. Puccini’s wife was accused of slander, found guilty and sentenced to five months in jail; but a payment by Puccini spared her that experience.

Ultimately 11 of Puccini’s operas are among the 200 most performed operas in the world, and the abovementioned three are in the top 10. Only Verdi and Mozart have had more operas performed. By his death in 1924, Puccini had earned $4 million from his works.

I hope this excursion in art has helped you, as it did me, to escape at least briefly from the omnipresent bad news.
