Poquott trustees resign

A few months after the June 2017 trustees election, the Village of Poquott board is experiencing changes once again.

Village clerk Joseph Newfield read a resignation letter from trustee Michael Schaefer at the Sept. 14 village board meeting.

Schaefer cited needing to attend to family issues in the letter. Mayor Dee Parrish has not yet appointed a trustee to replace Schaefer.

The resignation comes two months after John Mastauskas resigned, also due to personal reasons. Parrish appointed Christopher Schleider to replace Mastauskas, and he will complete the former trustee’s term, which ends in 2018. Mastauskas won his seat in 2016 after running as a write-in candidate.

On June 20, Poquott residents voted out Harold Berry, who received 170 votes, while newcomer John Richardson received 195.

Incumbent Jeff Koppelson was voted back in with 180 votes, and despite candidate Debbie Stevens challenging the results and filing a lawsuit, he retained his seat after she revoked her complaint.

Before she dropped the dispute, the Suffolk County Board of Elections recanvassed ballots June 29. Stevens, who earned 178 votes, said if the opportunity arose to become trustee, she would be willing to accept the position.

In interviews in June, both Richardson and Stevens said they felt the village has been polarized in recent years, and the mayor and board of trustees were not hearing residents’ concerns.

Koppelson said resignations are not unusual when it comes to a volunteer position such as trustee.

“As people decide to run or be appointed, we’re trying to make them understand this is a job, and it’s a volunteer job, so you have to be able to put in the time and energy,” Koppelson said.

Village School board honors teacher, eliminates book project

By AndreA PAldy The Three Village Central School District board kicked off its first meeting of the school year with a celebration of one of the district’s teachers receiving a national award.

Teacher of the year Fifth-grade teacher Kate Hunter’s achievement was the highlight of the evening.

“I feel like it’s déjà vu all over again,” Minnesauke principal Brian Biscari said.

Over the past year, the principal and the board have congratulated Hunter for her accolades as New York State Council for the Social Studies Outstanding Elementary Social Studies Classroom Teacher Award. She had received a similar award earlier from the Long Island Council for the Social Studies.

This time, Hunter received a standing ovation for being named National Council for the Social Studies Elementary Level Social Studies Teacher of the Year, which recognizes “exceptional classroom social studies teachers.”

Hunter, who has taught fifth grade for 10 years, began her career in the district at Minnesauke in 2003. This November, she will attend the national NCSS conference in San Francisco, where she will receive her award and present some of her work.

The meeting’s agenda also included a presentation from the director of elementary curriculum and a policy update about home schoolers. Additionally, the school board heard concerns about a summer reading assignment.

Summer reading Toni Williams-Mulgrave expressed dismay about the summer reading assignment, “Leaving Fletchville,” for R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s eighth-graders. A Ward Melville graduate and educator herself, Williams-Mulgrave, who is African-American, has a niece who read the assignment.

She told the school board that she was disturbed by the stereotyping and racial slurs in the book.

“Someone has to speak up, and we have to start the communication so that our society can grow — so that the stuff that’s going on across the world doesn’t happen here,” she said.

The family had met with district officials during the summer, and the reading assignment was canceled before the start of the school year.

The book, about siblings who’ve moved to a place where they are “the only black people in town,” was nominated for the 2010 Red Maple Award for seventh- and eighth-grade Canadian literature.

In a prepared statement, board president William Connors said that the district’s decision “to eliminate this year’s summer reading project was based on the interest of our students and primarily the connection one aspect of the book had to national events transpiring this summer — events that occurred well after the book was chosen.”

District superintendent Cheryl Pedisich also addressed the matter. In her statement, she said that the district’s program review committee will review independent summer reading assignments this year and make “any recommended changes” they believe will further benefit students.

Elementary curriculum Director of elementary curriculum Nathalie Lilavois unveiled the first part of a program that she said would help boost the district’s goal of guiding students towards becoming “skilled problem solvers, perceptive thinkers, quality producers, lifelong learners and self-directed learners.”

Lilavois’ first focus is elementary math.

She explained that she prepared a document that lays out the district’s elementary-level math curriculum and articulates how it aligns to the math learning standards. Lilavois made the material available to teachers on an expansive, interactive website that makes it easier for them to use in the classroom.

The site is organized by grade and then by topic. It has core-aligned resources, including GoMath — the district’s math program — and other websites that provide supplemental information and approaches to each focus area. The online project also enables teachers to suggest their own resources and ideas.

Lilavois will continue to build the site for all elementary subject levels and is developing the English language arts program this year.

In other business, the district updated several policies as required by statute.

It also amended a policy to allow homeschooled students in the district to participate in noncredit and nonathletic extracurricular activities such as clubs.

Lawmakers sign agreement to protect Setauket Harbor

By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com Cooperation between members of government, especially from differing political parties, is a scarce natural resource these days, but don’t tell that to leaders from Brookhaven Town, Suffolk County and New York State. Setauket Harbor and the surrounding area is set to be the beneficiary of that cooperation, as leaders from each of the three municipalities formed an agreement Sept. 23 aiming to protect the historic and natural resources of the harbor.

“The parties are committed to conserving, improving, protecting and interpreting Setauket Harbor’s historic and natural resources and environment through preservation of historic sties, wildlife areas and viewsheds to enable appropriate uses of harbor resources,” the agreement read in part. It also stated that preventing, abating and controlling water — also land and air pollution — will be a part of enhancing the health and safety of the people who live within or visit the Setauket Harbor watershed.

The agreement is a memorandum of understanding, meaning it is not law, but rather a set of guiding principles or a moral commitment to follow in the years ahead.

The co-signers of the document, town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) and Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station); county Legislator Kara Hahn (DSetauket); state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket); and representatives from the state Department of Environmental Conservation and Setauket Harbor Task Force left the agreement open-ended in the hopes that other branches of government and organizations will follow suit. The task force, a three-year-old community organization dedicated to improving water quality and the marine habitat in the harbor, spearheaded the agreement after finding local levels of government share a common interest in protecting and improving the harbor, though they were working concurrently rather than coordinately in some ways.

The memorandum was signed on a town dock off Shore Road in Setauket as part of the third Setauket Harbor Day, an annual event established by the task force in 2015.

“Providing greater funding for a host of projects, land acquisition, more protective zoning, denying shoreline hardening permits — these type actions, individually and collectively will define the resolve as put forth in the [memorandum of understanding],” he said in an email.

Englebright implored members of the public and community groups to not only get on board, but to take the additional step of holding elected officials to the terms of the agreement, including those who come after the incumbent lawmakers.

A 39-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station living on Wenmore Lane rented out a room in the house, despite not having permission to do so from the owner, according to police. While driving a 2016 Toyota in the parking lot of Walmart on Middle Country Road in Middle Island, a 58-year-old man from Flushing hit a 2012 Mazda and fled the scene without exchanging contact information at about 10 a.m. Sept. 24, according to police. He was arrested in Selden and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

Miles for Mattresses is the second walk he has organized to raise money for charity. In May 2016, Rogers traveled 50 miles on foot from his childhood neighborhood of Chelsea, Brooklyn, to Stony Brook to raise funds for the American Cancer Society in honor of his best friend who died of lung cancer.

Speers said church members and others were supportive of his last walk and she knows his current one will be a success, too.

“The Setauket Presbyterian Church is very giving especially when it’s for

when it’s over, it’s a let down,” Rogers said. “I feel good that I did it, but now what do I do? This is what I’ve been working for a certain amount of time.”

Calone said Setauket Presbyterian congregants are in awe of Rogers.

“It’s just so inspiring,” Calone said. “Kenny is just this wonderfully positive and energetic and selfless and generous person who just thinks about really concrete ways that he can help people, and he’s done that his whole life.”

a mission or to help people,” Speers said. “They’ll open up their pockets for that. So, the church gave a lot, and lots of his friends and just people in his world, his former co-workers, people like that really gave a lot, and he felt good doing it.”

The pastor said she was unable to join Rogers in Maryland due to recent hip surgery, so she is looking forward to joining him and others at the end of his trip, even if she needs a golf cart to do so.

“It should be a lot of fun,” Speers said. ”It would be like a victory lap.”

Rogers said while he’s looking forward to seeing everyone at the end of his walk, the end of such a mission leaves him with mixed feelings.

Trotta says red-light camera stats are being manipulated

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta (RFort Salonga) is calling for an investigation into the county’s annual Red Light Safety Program report, which he said has purposefully, and illegally, eliminated data on car acPage A26 cidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists.

Trotta stood with fellow legislators and colleagues Sept. 21 at the intersection of Route 25A and Miller Place Road in Miller Place to address his ongoing concerns with a lack of available statistics surrounding accidents, injuries and deaths due to the county’s red-light camera program, highlighting a conversation he had last month with a traffic engineer of Nelson & Pope, the company that prepares the annual reports.

According to Trotta, the traffic engineer advised him that the company was instructed not to include the pedestrian- and bicycle-involved accidents at red-light camera locations in reports in order to paint a better picture of the program. The reports are submitted to the state and made available to the public. The most recent report was released earlier this year and highlighted statistics for 2016. While pedestrian- and bicycle-involved accidents have been reported in a scattered few reports since the program began in 2010, the data has

not been included in the last two years’ reports.

Trotta said the data exclusion is a violation of the state’s motor vehicle and traffic law, which states the mandatory annual report must include the number, type and severity of all accidents reported at these intersections with traffic control devices.

He also said it is not clear who is behind the data exclusion — the county or the company behind the red-light camera program. Trotta urged the state attorney general to get involved and hold the guilty party accountable.

“How can anybody adequately look at the positive or negative features of a program when they’re not getting all the data?” Trotta said during the press conference. The legislator has long been opposed to the program, which he said he believes is the cause of an uptick in accidents throughout the area and is merely a ticket and revenue-generating scam by the county. “There are multiple reasons why this program should be shut down immediately and I’m aghast by the fact that we’re doing nothing and we are lying to the public by not including the pedestrians and the bicyclists. When I found out about this, I couldn’t believe it.”

Trotta was joined by legislators Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset) and Tom Muratore (R-Selden), as well as county Legislature candidate Gary Pollakusky (R), at the busy intersection where two teenagers have died after being struck by cars, which features red-light cameras.

“We lost a child here on a bicycle and a child here as a pedestrian,” Trotta said, referring to 14-year-old Nico Signore who died earlier this year, and 16-year-old John Luke, who died in 2015. “But I guess that doesn’t mean anything to anybody because they’re not even including [those accidents] in the report. I absolutely think there’s coercion with the county and this company to keep the money stream coming in. This entire program is just a calamity of errors.”

Pollakusky said he supports the suspen-

sion of the red-light camera program due to its negative impact on public safety.

“The red-light camera program is a money grab by [County Executive Steve Bellone (D)] and the Democrats in the Legislature and has been sold to the public as a public safety program — it is anything but safe,” Pollakusky said, stressing that accidents have increased after the red-light cameras were installed.

He also took issue with his opponent, Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai), who initially voted against the program but has since come to agree with its mission of changing poor traffic. “[She] is famous for saying, ‘If it saves one child’s life,’ it’s worth it [but] this program that you and your cohorts support, Mrs. Anker, has hurt innocent drivers, pedestrians and children alike,” Pollakusky said.

Personal injury lawyer David Raimondo, based in Lake Grove, represents the Luke family and pointed to an omission of data, including fatalities of pedestrians in auto accidents, in a presentation before the county Legislature in 2014 that led to the red-light camera program’s renewal.

“It’s up for renewal in 2019 and if we don’t have the proper data before the Legislature, it will continue to be renewed and we cannot let that happen,” Raimondo said. “It’s very important this program come to an end, it be suspended and that the suffering of the taxpayers of Suffolk County — both financially and physically — end.”

Stanley touches on SBU history, diversity, deficit during annual address

By RiTA J. egAn rita@tbrnewspapers.com During his annual address, Stony Brook University’s president celebrated the past and looked forward to the future.

President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr., delivered his State of the University Address to the Stony Brook campus community Sept. 27.

He said the first graduating class of 1961 consisted of approximately 40 students. In 2017, the university granted 7,313 degrees and certificates, including master’s and doctoral degrees that did not exist the first year.

The number of buildings has also changed on campus from a few to 136 structures.

Stanley said the students attending the university come from more diverse backgrounds compared to bygone decades. Diversity he said is something Stony Brook is committed to.

“We hope to reflect the diversity of the state we live in as well as the country we live in,” he said.

Stanley said while the number of international students has increased since 1957, this is the first year the amount of freshmen from other countries has decreased.

He said he has received feedback that a number of international students are hesitant to study in the United States due to

changes in immigration policies. The president is a supporter of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals plan instituted by former President Barack Obama (D). He said students protected by DACA at the university come from tough economic backgrounds yet succeed academically and epitomize the American Dream. He said SBU is committed to working with legislators to create a pathway for the students.

“Stony Brook University I hope has communicated to the campus and the world our support for these students,” he said.

Stanley said the university is trying to change the way it recruits in order to create more diversity within the crop of faculty members, as well.

Another development at Stony Brook through the years has been the change in athletic success. The president said most teams originally operated as club sports, then developed into Division 3 and eventually Division 1 teams.

Stanley touched on the addition of Southampton Hospital as part of the Stony Brook University medicine family, which occurred this past summer.

“It’s really going to improve service at both hospitals,” he said.

The president said with a $1.7 billion budget, Stony Brook University Hospital serves 400,000 patients and offers a Level

I trauma center, while the newly dubbed Stony Brook Southampton Hospital serves 100,000 with a $175 million budget.

He said the university is currently working on the Medicine and Research Translation Building and construction is scheduled to be completed in spring of 2018. The eight-level 240,000-square-foot building and 225,000-square-foot new Bed Tower will create opportunities for scientists and physicians to work side by side in the hopes of advancing cancer research and imaging diagnostics.

Stanley also addressed the university’s $24 million deficit, and he said he knows SBU can overcome it. The president said the biggest issue was the failure of the state as the university has not been included in state allocations in recent years “I absolutely support faculty and staff getting raises, they are completely appropriate,” he said.

Despite the deficit, hundreds of faculty members and students have been welcomed to Stony Brook University while the number of administration positions has decreased. The president said administrators are “working harder than they ever been before to help the university.”

filled. The goal, he said, is to have the least amount of impact on students.

The president said The Campaign for Stony Brook to raise funds for scholarships and research is $559.2 million toward a $600 million goal. It strives to reach the goal by June 30, 2018.

Church explores history of growth, change by beverly C. Tyler A new exhibit, “The 1800s, Growth and Change: The Church, The Community, The Country,” will be open to the public Oct. 7 through 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the history center of Caroline Church of Brookhaven, located at 1 Dyke Road, Setauket.

The exhibit details how Caroline Church recovered and prospered following the decades after the Revolutionary War. It also features the 1887 Caroline Church carriage shed which is one of the structures listed along with the church on the National Register of Historic Places in America and is currently being restored to its original state.

The exhibit section on the community illustrates, on various panels, how the Three Village area moved from an agricultural base to an industrial community with shipbuilding, a piano factory, a rubber factory and other industries. Featured photographs in the exhibit include two 4-foot long overlapping images of the Setauket area photographed on site in 1878 by George Bradford Brainerd (1845-1887). The photos, taken when there were few trees to hide the view, show the entire area from the Setauket Mill Pond to Route 25A. A series of questions then asks the viewer to identify various structures. Barbara Russell, Brookhaven Town historian and a member of the Caroline Church Historical Commission said, “We thought it would be more interesting to give a background on the photos, and then let the viewer find things, rather than point everything out.”

The section on the country features women’s work in both home and community, some of the local effects of the Civil War, the expansion of the public school system and other events that defined community life in the 19th century.

Charter company will offer week-long trips from Danfords

By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com A new business venture slated to open in Port Jefferson Village in spring 2018 will chart a course all the way to New England.

Lime Charters, a New York-based charter company, and Aeroyacht, a yacht dealer specializing in luxury sailing catamarans, have partnered with Danfords Hotel, Marina & Spa to establish a Port Jeff location where charter boats can be rented by interested patrons to be sailed through the Long Island Sound to the New England region for weeklong trips. Sailors would have the option of setting off on their own, or the company can recommend a captain to bring on board the small vessels to handle the navigation.

According to Lime Charters’ website, most captains charge between $150 and $250 per day. Depending on the season and the size of the boat, prices range from around $4,000 to $5,000 for the seven-day use of a catamaran, which is large enough to take up to 10 people. The company requires proof of sailing experience for those declining to bring along a captain, and pre-charter checks allow the company to assess sailors and ensure they are comfortable with the boat. Though the company advertises the boats can be used to sail to Rhode Island, Connecticut, Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod, among others, charterers are permitted to take the vessel essentially wherever they would like.

Village Mayor Margot Garant said this is the first such business ever available in Port Jeff.

Bill Beasley, the founder of Lime Charters, said in an email at a recent international boat show he received a flood of interest in an offering like this in New York.

“Up until now, folks had to go further

north or south to charter a catamaran sailboat,” he said.

Beasley shed some light on why Port Jeff is an “ideal location” to set up a launching area for Lime Charters. “It’s half way between New York City and the Hamptons — just an easy car or train ride out to us … Port Jefferson is a perfect sailing harbor town with

its shops, diverse restaurants and, of course Danfords. It is a perfect partner considering their central waterfront location and opportunity for charter guests to stay at either before or after their charter. We hope to attract clients who like to be pampered and Danfords certainly supports that level of service.”

Christina Whitehurst, director of sales and marketing at the hotel, said Danfords is equally excited by the natural hospitality experience partnership.

“We’ve been doing a lot of upgrades to the marina and the area, and this is proof the word has gotten around,” she said in a phone interview. “It’s just going to expose another audience to Danfords.”

Garant expressed excitement over the possibilities the charter trips could present to residents and visitors in Port Jeff for those who want to add a one-night stay before or after their charter experience.

“I love it, I think it’s fantastic,” she said of the service and its base in the village she oversees. “I think it’s an excellent way to have more activities on our waterways.”

Garant also called Danfords a perfect anchor point.

Currently, Lime Charters has a fleet of three boats, though Beasley said their plan is to add more. Each vessel has a cooking area, and they offer the option of having groceries delivered to the boat.

Lime Charters is currently taking reservations for the 2018 boating season.

Charter company will offer week-long trips from Danfords

Lime Charters, a New York-based charter company, and Aeroyacht, a yacht dealer specializing in luxury sailing catamarans, have partnered with Danfords Hotel, Marina & Spa to establish a Port Jeff location where charter boats can be rented by interested patrons to be sailed through the Long Island Sound to the New England region for weeklong trips. Sailors would have the option of setting off on their own, or the company can recommend a captain to bring on board the small vessels to handle the navigation.

According to Lime Charters’ website, most captains charge between $150 and $250 per day. Depending on the season and the size of the boat, prices range from around $4,000 to $5,000 for the seven-day use of a catamaran, which is large enough to take up to 10 people. The company requires proof of sailing experience for those declining to bring along a captain, and pre-charter checks allow the company to assess sailors and ensure they are comfortable with the boat. Though the company advertises the boats can be used to sail to Rhode Island, Connecticut, Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod, among others, charterers are permitted to take the vessel essen153787 tially wherever they would like.

“We’ve been doing a lot of upgrades to the marina and the area, and this is proof the word has gotten around,” she said in a phone interview. “It’s just going to expose another audience to Danfords.”

Branching out

Gold Coast Bank has appointed Anne Feliciano, a resident of Port Jefferson Station, as manager of the bank’s Setauket branch. Feliciano joins Long Island and Brooklyn-based Gold Coast following more than a decade serving as a branch manager for People’s United Bank. She was previously a relationship banker for Washington Mutual.

Feliciano will be working in tandem with the current Setauket branch manager, Olga Belleau, through the end of the year when Belleau plans to retire.

The Setauket resident worked with oncology dietitian Jennifer Fitzgibbon to find herbs

that can help with patients’ recovery process and help to remedy some of the many side effects their treatment.

The Gold Award represents the highest achievement Girl Scouts can reach. Since 1916 girls have successfully answered the call “Go Gold,” an act that indelibly marks them as accomplished members of their communities and the world.

Teen angel

Ward Melville High School senior Madeline Mastriano was selected as the only student recipient of the Junior Angel Award during this September’s second annual Angel Awards. The award is given to recognize women for their charity work.

Mastriano was honored for her efforts in co-chairing the Three Village Kids Lemonade Stand she created five years ago with her brother Joseph, a freshman at R. C. Murphy Junior High School. The students rallied their peers from throughout the district and members of the community to raise $20,000 at the lemonade stand this summer. To date, the teen siblings have helped raise more than $36,000 for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

The creative design, which Nassiri conceived with the help of art teacher Cortney Weisman, was done as part of a challenge set up by the North Shore Montessori School as part of their efforts to modernize their look.

The challenge not only enabled Nassiri to showcase her imagination, but also gain valuable insight into the client-graphic designer relationship and invaluable experience in the field.

The winning design is featured throughout the school’s website and new spirit wear.

By Bill landon Ward Melville head coach Erick Sussin doesn’t hesitate to mix up his tennis lineup. In fact, it’s been a recipe for success this season. The Sept. 25 matchup at BayportBlue Point proved no different, as the Patriots blanked their opponent 7-0 to remain undefeated atop the League V leaderboard.

“We lack the depth we had a year ago, and we’ve changed up our No. 3 and No. 4 singles several times this year,” the head coach said. “But we have strong four points [in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and singles], and all you need is four points to win.

That has allowed us to win all of these matches.”

Jade Eggelston’s No. 1 singles match was a breeze, sweeping 6-1, 6-0. The sophomore is typically a

No. 2 singles starter, but her head coach said she’s one of the most consistent players, even with the pressure of the team being 8-0.

“You want to keep it up — you don’t want to let your school down,” Eggelston said. “I had to keep my rhythm and maintain consistency, but I thought my serve was pretty dependable today.”

Usually the No. 1 singles starter, junior Denise Lai won her first doubles match with classmate Anna Ma, 6-0, 6-1.

“Starting in first doubles was a little different for me today,” Lai said. “[But] I look at it as just another match and try to play my best.”

Sussin said Ma hits with incredible pace on her ground strokes and has a tough serve to break, which makes her a force to be reckoned with. She said she just continues to take each match one set at a time.

“It adds pressure because you’re expected to win, but it also makes you play better,” Ma said, adding that she thought her forehand and serve helped her win the match.

“We’ll have to be more consistent and keep our heads in the game — stay mentally strong.”

Senior Keren Collins, normally at first doubles, partnered with Isabella Anderes at second doubles and shut out their challengers 6-0, 6-0.

Collins, a returning All-County player since 2015, agreed with her teammates that being undefeated helps her focus and gives her more of a desire to give it her all.

“It makes you play better,” she said. “It gives you confidence that we can do this. We’ve done it before, so we can do it again.”

Dara Berman won her third singles matchup 6-2, 6-3 and Preeti Kota blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in fourth singles, while Samantha Sloan and Natalia Ferretti’s results were much closer, edging their opponents 7-5, 6-4. Ferretti secured her first win in her first varsity start.

Ward Melville was back in action on their home court against Sachem Sept. 27., bult results from the matchup were not available by press time.

Sanders’ Medicare bill a positive step

Risk and reward Suffolk County residents deserve full disclosure of the total number of fatal accidents occurring at intersections with red-light cameras.

Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) was joined by legislators Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset) and Tom Muratore (R-Selden) in calling for an investigation into the county’s most recently released Red Light Safety Program report. Trotta claimed the county’s report fails to include any accidents involving pedestrians or bicyclists in its statistics in order to paint a better picture of the program, a fact that was confirmed by the traffic engineer Nelson & Pope.

Since the program’s start in July 2010, the county has installed more than 216 red-light cameras aimed at “enhancing the safety of motorists,” according to the Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violation Agency on the Suffolk County website. These automated cameras resulted in more than 415,000 traffic citations being issued to drivers in 2016, generating nearly $31 million in revenue for the county. With a current budget deficit, these funds undoubtedly go a long way toward filling the shortfall.

The real question is whether the ever-increasing number of red-light cameras and resulting tickets has increased the safety of our local roadways. Trotta pointed to a recent study that shows an increasing number of accidents at 46 of 100 intersections with cameras installed — and at 32 of those locations there has been a more than 100 percent increase.

We wonder what these statistics would look like if adjusted to include those omitted accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists. Under New York State law, a driver is required to contact police and file an accident report for all cases where a person is either killed or injured within 10 days.

The data needed to fully evaluate the Red Light Safety Program is available and can be obtained from the state. But elected officials are not making the information public for us to read and make an informed opinion as to whether the red-light cameras are having the intended effect — increasing the safety of our local roads.

New York is one of 24 states across the country that allows red-light camera use to enforce speed and traffic laws, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association, a nonprofit that represents states and agencies aiming to address behavioral highway issues to decrease the number of accident-related deaths.

As Suffolk County’s red-light program comes up for renewal in 2019, and motions have been made to temporarily suspend it, taxpayers deserve to have all the facts presented. We have the right to know if it’s working before paying another fine or whether lives are being put at unnecessary risk for profit.

I am delighted to see a nice amount of Democratic senators co-sponsoring Sen. Bernie Sanders’ bill calling for a Medicare plan for all Americans.

It is a policy that is long overdue in the United States, as most developed countries in the world provide some version of universal health care, and report better overall outcomes in care and spending than our country does. While I recognize that this is a politically heavy lift in a Republican-held Congress and White House, I believe that it is a statement of progressive values and morals. This bill stands in stark contrast to the numerous Republican plans that have been proposed, all of which take health care away

from millions of Americans.

The latest version of Trumpcare, the Graham-Cassidy-Heller bill, is yet another Republican proposal that the majority is trying to push through, without the procedures of committee hearings and a CBO score. They are attempting to do this before Sept. 30, so they can push this through the reconciliation process, which does not require 60 votes.

It is a fiscally and morally irresponsible move, as health care is about one-sixth of our nation’s GDP, and this bill would affect the health care of 32 million Americans. It would also redistribute money to states, who could then choose to waive health benefits,

or deny coverage because of preexisting conditions.

It is only when we as a society accept that health care is a basic human right, that every family deserves to see a doctor when they are sick, regardless of income, that we will at last join the rest of the civilized world in providing for our citizens. I am proud to stand with Sen. Sanders of Vermont and the co-sponsors of this bill, including New York’s Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, calling on a Medicare for all plan in the United States. I believe that these senators stand on the right side of history, and on the side of our citizens.

I am honored to be the Women’s Equality Party nominee for the position of Brookhaven Town Clerk. I am also humbled to realize I am the candidate selected by the Women’s Equality Party for the 2017 election, which happens to be the centennial anniversary of the women’s right to vote in New York State. a staunch advocate for women’s rights for more than 30 years, and currently sit as the president of the National Women’s Political Caucus, a nonprofit, bipartisan group that seeks to elect progressive women. It is inspiring to see all the fresh faces getting involved and reinvigorating for those of us who have been leading the charge. The results of this primary are evidence of how important each individual vote is, with 18 total votes cast. I look forward to continuing to advocate for women’s equality and I am hopeful that I will continue to be given the

honor to efficiently and effectively serve the residents of the Town of Brookhaven as town clerk.

Sometimes it takes a village or two, or three What began as a passion for local history for me and the want to share it with the world, turned into Culper Spy Day in 2015 as a way for organizations to spotlight their part of The Revolutionary War and the Culper Spy Ring’s activities in Setauket and beyond.

It has now grown to include most of the Washington Spy Trail and welcomes close to 700 guests over a one-day period.

This year we had attendees traveling from as far away as Canada, California, Michigan, Florida and the entire New England area.

We look forward with great anticipation for the coming years in making this a weekend event with additional organizations from Manhattan to Montauk to join in the festivities with their part of this vital era of American history.

he next generation is afraid.

Can you blame them? They know about 9/11, as they should.

When they’re not sending pictures of themselves and the food they’re eating to their group of best friends through social media, they read headlines and see pictures of people, just like them, who are living their lives one day and then becoming statistics the next.

This particular generation says it would pick security over freedom.

Not all of them do, of course,

That is a reflection of just how much the world has changed since I grew up.

In my youth, I was aware of the Cold War. A nuclear war, although a possibil-

ity in the bilateral world that pitted the United States against the Soviet Union, seemed unlikely. After all, the biggest deterrent was the likelihood of mutually assured destruction. As Matthew Broderick experienced in the movie “War Games,” no one wins or, to quote the eerie computer from the movie, “the only winning move is not to play.”

In times of stress, Americans have historically pulled away from the ideals of freedom and democracy.

During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus, which ensures that someone can challenge an unlawful detention or imprisonment. During World War II, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt established internment camps, where he held more than 100,000 people of Japanese decent, worried that they might be colluding with a government that had just attacked us.

At the start of the Cold War, Sen. Joseph McCarthy played into our worst fears, leading the House Un-American Activities Committee to question the

beliefs and loyalties of its citizens. In the meantime, he ruined the lives of thousands of people and turned Americans against each other.

Many of these pursuits were designed to ease the minds of citizens about our friends and neighbors, some of whom might be working with an enemy and strike against us.

So, today, what are we willing to give up? And, perhaps more importantly, to whom are we surrendering these freedoms?

I recently watched a television reporter who was interviewing citizens in North Korea. He was asking them how they felt about their leader, Kim Jung-un, and the way he was rattling the saber against the United States and the rest of the world.

Not surprisingly, the North Koreans, or the translator with them, expressed unreserved support for the man who trades threats seemingly on a daily basis with President Donald Trump.

Those interviewed were confident they were in good hands.

I doubt they felt comfortable expressing any other view. What

consequences would they suffer if they publicly questioned their leader’s judgment? Their leader doesn’t seem receptive to opposing viewpoints.

On our shores, we can question our own leaders openly and frequently. We can gather in groups and protest.

Trump can bristle at the way the leftleaning press covers him, just as President Barack Obama shared his displeasure over the coverage from Fox News during his presidency, but presidents can’t shut down these organizations.

Early in our country’s history, our Founding Fathers, who had just emerged victorious in a costly battle with King George III of Great Britain and Ireland, didn’t want the leaders of the new nation to have unchecked power. The pioneering statesmen wanted to guarantee Americans protections from any government, domestic or international.

Every freedom we give up moves us further down a slippery slope.

For those of us who grew up before the fight against terrorism, freedom remains at the heart of the country we are protecting.

The horrors of the Vietnam War and a question of trust

atching the 10-part Ken Burns and Lynn Novick PBS TV series, “The Vietnam War,” brought us back to the terrible ’60s.

That decade began calmly enough; my husband had volunteered to be a physician in the service in 1963, through a little known program called the Berry Plan.

I was thrilled at the prospect that we would get to travel.

Four years later, the United States was immersed in a brutal war in a place called Vietnam, on the other side world.

Between you and me

My husband would put their faces back together and try to save their eyes. The war was only 24 hours away from us, and we lived always on edge. We were further aware of the dangers and horror of the war the pilots in particular faced, because we were housed in the middle of their section on the base.

Some served two and three tours, leaving their wives and children behind frantic with worry.

We returned home to New York City for a visit and were puzzled by the disconnect between the military and civilians. What was a desperate existence on the one hand was a seemingly unaffected population on the other. Democratic President Lyndon Johnson had promised the nation a life with guns and butter, and indeed that was what we saw. When we tried to tell friends what was going on, they seemed surprised, even annoyed by the fuss we were making. Stunned, we returned to base.

Which was the real world?

Then the domino effect theory, should Vietnam fall, began to be questioned. The gap between words and actions of government officials started

to emerge. We were the innocents, believing that our president would never lie to us. We became, thanks to Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, caught up in a quantified body count to measure our successes. We wondered why it mattered how many of the enemy was killed if even one American died. Why were we there? The antiwar movement took hold, led by college students across America, labeled as communist-inspired and fiercely resisted by the Johnson administration.

Mourning and anti-war protests were tearing the country apart.

My husband and I left the military in 1969, years sooner than the fighting men left Vietnam.

And some five years ago, I returned to Vietnam on a tour to see the country and try to make sense of what had happened there. I was overwhelmed.

The weather was insufferably humid and hot, and I thought of the heavy backpacks the fighters had to carry as they moved through the jungle. The Vietnamese in the south, where our tour started, refer to the war as the American War in their museums and in conversation. Of course they do, I real-

ized. They were unfailingly kind to us, welcoming us and, I suppose, our hard currency. In the north, near Hanoi, the older citizens were coldly polite. Most of the population was born after the war but, for the most part, those young people never knew their fathers. They were killed. And the country? The country was beautiful, with its mountains, rice paddies and deltas, scenic and peaceful.

We had known nothing of the history of Vietnam before the nation entered the war. The Vietnamese people had struggled against Chinese occupation for more than 1,000 years, followed by the French. The Vietnamese weren’t ideological communists; they just wanted their homeland to be free. And the Chinese entered the war not to spread communism but to keep us from their borders.

We learned finally but it cost us more than 58,000 American lives, untold wounded and an unimaginable amount of money. Have we learned enough to apply the lessons to Afghanistan and Iraq and to North Korea? We have learned never again to regard our leaders with trust.
